On Friday September 22nd, I traveled downtown to King Street to attend the evening show of
North by Northwest, directed by Simon Phillips, at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. As I
approached the theatre, it stood out amongst the busyness of Toronto streets due to a large,
vibrant red poster that immediately caught the eye allowing for no mistake to be made about
where the show was located. The roof above twinkled with hundreds of light bulbs, making any
audience member feel the sense of glamour as they entered the building. The box office, although
dimly light, had a friendly and respectful atmosphere with two kind ladies happy to help each

A variety of classic sound effects replicated the projection on screen in order to specify even
further the actions being performed such as using the telephone, riding in an elevator, arriving at a
train stop, and driving in a car. The sound effects created a connection to a more traditional sense of
theatre amongst the new technological addition of projectors. With the busyness of the opening
scene, a spotlight was used to appear on each actor as they spoke. This made it clear to the
audience where they should be looking and it lessened the overwhelming feeling of multiple
people being on stage at once. After the opening, the actors took off their own set pieces making
for a quick and smooth transition into the next scene. The cage surrounding the stage was
diversely used as walls, doors, and even an elevator. A separate cage piece was often lowered from
above to divide the stage in half from left to right when the whole stage did not need to be used. I

being used as the back seat of a taxi or the front seat of a car as other cast members pushed it around

Delano Manongs
Manongs, is a common word I hear when I was in the Philippines, which means elderly. This is
what I call the jeepney drivers, strangers in the streets or even the security guard in my school.
But here in America, they were the forgotten heroes whom I look up to. They were named as

What is Corruption?
Corruption can mean so many things and can be interpreted in countless ways but in the most
simplistic way of explaining what it is, it is the misuse of judgment, the struggle between what is
right and what is wrong. No one really knows what led to corruption, but some say it was
religious reasons that led to this malfeasance, meaning the devil, while others believe different.
People in today s society tend to relate this topic to politics because it is most commonly occurs
within that faction of society. Corruption is a reoccurring theme throughout The Crucible, it shows
through the political, McCarthyism, religious and personal reasons of the Colonial Era. The
Crucible takes place in the early England colonies in Salem, Massachusetts during what we know
as the witch trials. It is based on a group of girls involved in witch like activities, who begin to
accuse others of committing witchcraft just so that they do not get into trouble. One girl controls
the group, Abigail Williams, and she plots against Elizabeth Proctorwho is married to John Proctor,
who Abigail had an affair with. Due to these childish and dramatic acts of Abigail and the girls,
half the townspeople were taken to trial and found guilty of witchery and worshipping the devil and
were sentenced to hang. Not till the end did the townspeople realize their mistake about the
accusations, which turned out to be false.

Early Britain was an era of take overs and violence , overall it was a time of darkness , but despite
the darkness this Anglo Saxon era was a time filled with a new culture and government . Anglo
Saxons came to Britain sometime during AD 425 450 and lasted until 1066 . When the Romans left
Britain , new settlement began . With the new population in Britain , there was a need for housing
too , the Anglo Saxon architecture however , did not start until the mid fifth century . Anglo Saxon
architecture is a different style than modern architecture .
The Anglo Saxon era was not as advanced as we are today , meaning they had to make do with
the resources they had . The resources the had were any natural resources around them or materials
that were man made . The Anglo Saxon homes were not built to last , but to provide shelter . Since
the housing was meant to last . Wattle and Daubhas been used to create a filler for the wooden
frames . It used materials that could be found easily which made it affordable to builders . The

Summary Of Battle Hymn Of The Tiger Mother
In Patrick Goldstein s response to Amy Chua s book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, he makes
the argument that while earning a degree or graduating summa cum laude is critical to success
for some people. Many of today s wealthiest, most innovative people either dropped out or did not
go to college. Rather, they learned through informal experience, working their way from the
absolute bottom, up to becoming universally respected millionaires and billionaires. Goldstein
analyzes Chua s definition of the word success; to be top of the class, to go to an Ivy League school,
and to get a great paying job. He compares success to show biz and Hollywood, a town built by
mostly uneducated millionaires. He challenges Chua to see a different perspective on the means of

Queen Hatshepsut of the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt was one of the first known female
pharaohs. Born in 1507 BC, Hatshepsut was the longest reigning female pharaoh, who was in
power from almost twenty two years. Queen Hatshepsut is often considered to be one of the most
successful pharaohs in the history of ancient Egypt.
Daughter to Egyptian king, Thutmose I, and his principal wife, Ahmose, Hatshepsut was destined to
be the queen one day. King Thutmose I also had another child with one of his lesser wives,
Thutmose II. After her father s death, twelve year old Hatshepsut was married off to her half
brother, Thutmose II. Marrying within your family was common during that time period because
they wanted to keep the royal bloodline pure.
King Thutmose II s reigned over the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt for fifteen years, and Hatshepsut
took the traditional role as queen and principal wife. During Thutmose II and Hatshepsut s
marriage, Hatshepsut bore a daughter, Neferure, but no sons. However, Thutmose II had a male
heir, Thutmose III, with one of his lesser wives.
At the time of Thutmose II s death, Thutmose III was still an infant, unable to ascend the throne
unaided. Hatshepsut initially served as Thutmose III s regent, until, for reasons unknown,
Hatshepsut assumed the role of pharaoh. While Hatshepsut never officially gained possession of the
crown because Thutmose III was never uncrowned, it was clear that Hatshepsut was the primary

he found her with a child that was not his own. Chillingworth is also a man of science, which
means more than likely, he is not a man of God. In fact, he loses his soul to Satan and basically

There are many different types of disorders. I am personally interested in personality disorders
and eating disorders. Now that might sound weird, but what I mean is I find it interesting and

effect do different solutions (maple syrup, mouth wash, and saltwater) have on cell size? Before we
started this lab we had to have our background information which was osmosis is when water
moves from a high concentration to a low concentration through a membrane. We also had to
know that hypotonic is when water is moving into the cell and the cell swells/expands.
Hypertonic is when water is moving out of the cell and the cell is shrinking. Isotonic is when an

Botany began near the Neolithic Period but wasn t scientifically studied until the 1700 s. During the
Neolithic Period they had the knowledge of farming and soon began growing their own crops.
Fruits and vegetables have been an important part of social development since the beginning of
time. In Ancient Greece and Rome philosophers urged more learning in sciences, they began
learning more about plants. The philosopher Theophrastus was known as The Father of Botany
because of two seminal works that were used for the next 1500 years and survive today (Mason).
For the next 1500 years, there would be little development and most botanical studies were limited

One day, unexpectedly the astrologer encounters with a stranger, with whom he had picked up a
quarrel and stabbed him, thinking that he had murdered. On seeing, his victim alive the astrologer
felt happy and relieved and immediately accepts, for the challenge offered by the stranger. The
stranger could not identify the astrologer because he was disguised as a real astrologer. When the
astrologer gave accurate and precise predictions about the stranger s past, the stranger was
astonished, for which the astrologer replies that he knew, as he knew many other things, but he

uses expresses the beauty of irony throughout his famous novel, The Kite Runner. There are
many instances throughout the novel in which events seem to be leaning one way and then
suddenly change, unfortunately for the worse. These examples include experiences with Baba,
Amir and Hassan. Hosseini s use of irony really hooks the reader, leaving an unpredictable series
of events for Amir and Hassan. The first example of irony that is found in the Kite Runner was

Baba would always tell Amir how lying was a sin yet Amir eventually finds out that Baba had
lied to him about Hassan being his brother. Baba said, There is only one sin. And that is theft...
When you tell a lie, you steal someone s right to the truth. (pg.237) By him lying, he completely
went against what he said was right. Baba had not only lied to Amir, but to Hassan and others as
well. Baba had been doing something he knew was wrong, but he had still chosen to go against
his own beliefs and do it anyway. The theme addressed here is simply betrayal. Baba is
consistently hypocritical throughout the novel. For example, Baba is immensely ashamed of
11 year old Amir for crying when he saw a man murdered in the street, but later in the novel
when Ali and Hassan leave for good, Baba is full of tears. This reveals the bias and corrupt
personality Baba possesses. Baba is not a great father and only shows his affection for Amir
when great successes occur such as the kite competition victory. Baba betrays many characters
in the novel, however he does most of an injustice to Amir, his son. Baba never informing him of
his sibling relationship with Hassan appears as stupidity and selfishness. Baba does not wish to
provide joy for his sons at the cost of revealing that he had slept with Ali s wife and produced
Hassan. Baba is really just a coward. The lying demonstrated by Baba contributes to the main
idea of forgiveness. Baba does a poor job as a father for the most part of his life and on his deathbed

The glycemic load (GL) of food is a number that estimates how much the food will raise a person
s blood glucose level after eating it. One unit of glycemic load approximates the effect of
consuming one gram of glucose. Glycemic load accounts for how much carbohydrate is in the
food and how much each gram of carbohydrate in the food raises blood glucose levels. Glycemic
load is based on the glycemic index (GI), and is calculated by multiplying the grams of available
carbohydrate in the food times the food s GI and then dividing by 100.
Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person s thoughts,
behavior, feelings and sense of well being. People with depressed mood can feel sad, anxious,
empty, hopeless, helpless, worthless, guilty, irritable, ashamed or restless. They may lose interest
in activities that were once pleasurable, experience loss of appetite or overeating, have problems
concentrating, remembering details or making decisions, and may contemplate, attempt or
commit suicide. Insomnia, excessive sleeping, fatigue, aches, pains, digestive problems or
reduced energy may also be present. Depressed mood is a feature of some psychiatric syndromes
such as major depressive disorder, but it may also be a normal reaction to life events such as grief,

My Writing That I Did Not Know Before
Over the course of this class I have learned many things about writing that I did not know before,
because I never had any great instruction before i came to college. In Grade school and high
school, when I got back a graded paper there would just be words crossed out, or punctuation
corrections. There would never be any explanation as to why I need to correct this, or why this
is wrong. I would go over the corrections and wonder how this is wrong and why does a comma
go there but why doesn t a comma go here. When reading the corrections and notes you made on
each of my papers this year, I more easily understood why something was wrong. I might not have
made the same corrections in the next paper, but each paper I got back I understood what was
wrong, and what I needed to do to correct it. I think I understood more about writingwith each
paper that I wrote this year. I might not have shown it with each paper because I seem to always
make the same errors. I always get mixed up when using singular and plural nouns, using the
same adjective throughout the paper, and not being descriptive. I knew after you made the
corrections why something is wrong, but I never seemed to make the corrections myself, because
I have a habit of making those same mistakes, and because it sounds like it is right to me because
