Unfreedoms
Cry, the Beloved County is packed with unfreedoms and exploitation. Throughout my paper I will
discuss how these are evident when the novel is evaluated using what was in some of the readings that
we read this semester, then I will discuss the global implications of Apartheid. The readings that I will
be using are Development as Freedom by Amartya Sen, Three Economic Paradigms by Susan Feiner,
and The Structure of Dependence by Theotonio Dos Santos. Finally, I will analyze the global
implications of the system of Apartheid. (need 70 more words) Amartya Sen s book, Development as
Freedom, gives us a window to evaluate Cry, The Beloved Country through. In Sen s book, he outlines
five unfreedoms: Political freedom, economic facilities, social ... Show more content on

In this article she wrote about three different ways to view a given situation. Her three economic
paradigms are conservative/ free market, liberal/ imperfectionist, and radical/ exploitation. Free
market economics states that individuals are free, independent, rational choosers who are motivated by
self interest. They believe in a free market and that the government should have no control over it, and
that this will lead to competitive markets and economic growth. Liberals also use a market system;
however, they believe that government intervention is necessary. They think that some people don t
have the resources at their disposal to achieve upward mobility. Liberals believe that they it is
necessary for governments to provide an education to all people so that they have a chance to improve
their living conditions. Gertrude s son is an example of the government not successfully
accomplishing this. In the slums, children are not given the education that they need in order to
succeed later in life. This is one example of how the government in South Africa is not doing what an
imperfectionist would recommend they do. The last of the three economic paradigms is the radical
perspective. Radicals have very firm theories of how workers are exploited by their employers. They
explain minority have low income and status because they have a history of being exploited. They

Cardozo Case Summary
A recently graduated accountant accepted a company wanting to go public as its first client. That
company was Cardozo and Co, Inc., incorporated in Massachusetts, but headquartered in Miami, FL.
The IPO was successful, and the public company decided to remain with the accountant. After the
IPO, the accountant provided tax advice on matters, such as sheltering money to the Cayman Islands,
and helped to prepare the financial statements for the proxy statement during a merger to another
company that would significantly increase its worth. The auditor s opinion on the financial statements
prepared had been released to the public, and even used by a Prosser Bank to provide a loan to

v. Touche, the court used the primary benefit test, which became known as Ultramares. Ultramares
requires privity, the accountant has a fiduciary duty only to whom they performed work for or an
entity very close to privity. Ultramares requires four aspects for a nonclient; the accountant must be
aware of the name, purpose, extent, and that the client is aware of the nonclient s use. If Ultramares
was used by Prosser Bank and the shareholders, it would fail on several requirements, but primarily
due to the fact that privity is not present, and the parties existence was unknown to the accountant. In
the case of Tricontinental Industries, Ltd. v. PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, Tricontinental relied on the
Anicom, Inc. s financial statements audited by PWC, but PWC did not note in its opinion the
discrepancies it discovered during the audit, and Tricontinental entered into an Asset Purchase
Agreement. Anicom eventually restated its financials and became bankrupt. Tricontinenal blames
PWC for negligence. The judge ruled in favor of PWC. Even though this case has different facts than
the Cardozo and Co, Inc. situation, under Ultramares, the accountant intended his work to be used by
his client. The Restatement (Second) of Torts, specifically with regard to the foreseen users and
foreseen class of users test expanded the liability of accountants to foreseen users and users within a

Southern Colonies Similarities
Comparison Essay U.S History G Block Valentina Stephens 29/9/17 North vs. South Colonies The
Northern and Southern colonies share many similarities when it comes to government leadership,
immigration, the treatment of women and the use of slavery. However there are also several
differences that influence the social structure of the respective territories. The Southern colonies were
considered Virginia, Maryland, Georgia North and South Carolina. Which had a very warm climate
which was excellent for farming. While the Northern states were Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode
Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey. The political and social movements of the
South were controlled and lead majoritively by the farmers that grew the cash crops and had the most
money. While the North had a more structured government system, much more influenced by England
that followed set laws and agreements in comparison to the South. Ben Franklin heavily influenced
the people of the North by preaching about the Enlightenment. Which was a movement that originated
in Europe which spoke of obtaining truths through experimentation and scientific reasoning. Since the
Puritans were big supporters of public education, making sure everyone would be able to read the
bible, these new ideas were spread through books and pamphlets. In comparison to the South which
did not catch on to these Enlightenment ideas as fast as the North did because they did not care much
for education.

Manatees, The Gentle Giant Is Going Extinct Essays
The West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus) is a marine mammal that lives in the coastal waters
and around the offshore reefs of Belize. Manatees have large gray bodies covered with algae or
barnacles. They are herbivores that consume marine vegetation such as sea grass and surface regularly
to breathe. They reside in sea grass beds and in mangroves that provide them with shelter. The West
Indian Manatee is listed as vulnerable under the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and may
eventually be listed as endangered. They are at a huge risk of decline due to coastal development and
other changes to the environment (Auil). Manatees are facing countless risks and deaths as the human
population increases in varying locations. According to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Belize, mangroves estimate up to 3.4% of the land area, about 296 square miles (CITE). Mangroves
serve important ecological service such as erosion control, filter, and clean, while also providing
shelter to many marine organisms like lemon sharks, invertebrates, shrimp, and manatees. There is a
lot of biodiversity in mangroves and due to the clearance for urban and rural development, many of
these organisms are losing their homes (Patterson). Belize s coastal areas are usually sea grass beds.
Sea grass destruction strip away habitats from numerous lobster, conch, fish, turtles, and manatees
(CITE). Sea grass is the manatee s main food source and destruction of these beds limits their grazing
and range. Watercraft traffic in these shallow areas is also another reason of harming the sea grass
beds.
Watercrafts are a huge threat for manatees by of degradation of sea grass beds. Watercrafts are also
dangerous in the sense that their propellers strike the manatees which is one of the causes of their
deaths. Many manatee accidents have been reported due to watercraft collision in Belize, and in the
state of Florida. In 2003, the Florida Fish Wildlife Conservation Commission showed a report that a
total of 305 manatees were killed due to watercrafts. This also depends on the speed of the watercraft
that is travelling. If it is travelling at a higher speed, it can damage the manatee tremendously or even
kill it. Scientists in Florida s Marine Mammal

Analysis Of The Poem Twenty One Love Poems By Adrienne...
Adrienne Rich was a highly acclaimed twentieth century poet who railed against war and the
injustices in the world, and also used imagery that spoke tenderly of love feelings that she sensed were
both highly individual for her, but also universal. Twenty One Love Poems were written between 1974
1976 to her lover of the time, and they track the course of the relationship through the sweet beginning
stages, the development of mature love, and all the way through to its dissolution due to her partner s
seeming inability to come out and admit to her homosexuality at a time in society when relationships
between women were not endorsed or supported. The language in these poems is very rich and weaves
both ugly city imagery and elegant metaphors and similes together, with the apparent intention of
making the reader search inside to see if the images and ideas conveyed by the language can be
applied to the reader s own experience of living too. While these poems are highly individualistic and
at times very personal, this impressive and moving body of poetic accomplishment also reflects
themes to which all human beings can relate. In an interview with Kate Waldman in The Paris Review,
Rich herself states that:
As long as I can remember I have cared about the timbre, the phrasing of a poetic line. Ever since
Snapshots, I ve worked close to the pull and release of voices... The voices may be individual, but they
re searching for a shared moral reality. This

Affirmative Action And Its Effect On Society Essay
In Martin Luther King s I Have a Dream Speech, he states I look to a day when people will not be
judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character , this appeals to the emotions
that judging based on a person s race is wrong. For this reason affirmative action in higher education
admission should alter for it creates a perpetual racial preference in admission.
Affirmative action is controversial due its issue of whether the generation of today should pay for the
past injustices done to certain ethnicities. It questions the constitutionality of its existence and whether
it perpetuates racial discrimination. Although affirmative action greatly promotes diversity and
exposes diverse perspectives in an educational field, it s time to realize its modern predicaments and
visualize how to better progress terms of admission for the future of the diversified generations of
America. Thus it is vital to address the reasons why prolonging affirmative action hinders the creation
for better opportunities to those at a disadvantaged.
The dilemma of affirmative action is defining equal opportunities, especially to ethnicities who
historically felt injustice. The famous U.S landmark case Regents of the University of California v.
Bakke (1978), where Allan Bakke, a white man, was twice rejected to University of California
Medical School at Davis, ruled that racial quotas violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th
Amendment , however race can serve a part as one

Make The Right Choices In The Giver
The Giver Theme Essay Jonas lives in a world of Sameness. In his community, life has been changed
to be a place without color, choice, feelings, love, or inequality a perfect world to all. No one ever
complains: this is how the community runs, and has been running for as long as citizens can
remember. At age 12, Jonas is assigned his life work as the Receiver of Memory and joins a
mysterious old man named the Giver. The Giver uses his knowledge help the community make the
right choices in times of crisis. He shares his memories about when life had the things that make life
amazing the color, the love, the feelings, the passion. Jonas is amazed and decides his world
desperately is in need of change. The problem is, he doesn t know how to fix his choreographed world

choice. The privilege to make decisions was taken away to protect people from wrong choices. There,
they believe it s definitely not safe to let people choose things for themselves. They are scared that
people won t learn from their mistakes. This fact is so significant in our world. We all make mistakes,
but we all need to learn from them to grow. If you happen to make the wrong choice and suffer the
consequences, you most likely won t make the same mistake again. For instance, if you ride your bike
over a jump that s too large for you, you could fall off and get injured, which no one wants. Then next

How I Went from Aching Loneliness to Blissful Solitude
It was an aching solitude. I sat in silence, ensnared within my chaotic mind while everyone s elated
voices stretched across the classroom like a contagious disease but my immunity was too study to
catch a speck of it. I was never a big fan of change, especially ones that strike you without any
warning. The transition from elementary to junior high wasn t the challenging part for me, it was the
fact that I felt alone. It never occurred to me that everything was temporary, even friendships. Initially,
going into seventh grade was absolutely petrifying, nearly all my friends was in a different T.A., while
in the other hand, I was placed in a class filled with unfamiliar faces. Everyone appeared to be
recognizable to each other, I felt as if I was an outcast, just a girl at the back of the classroom. At that
time, the most bothersome traits about me was that I was shy, reticent, and anxious. I swore there must
have been something wrong with me, how hard could it be to approach another student and simply
talk or just plainly introduce myself. Although, I attempted to be as optimistic as I possibly could, I
would still be able to be with my friends at lunch, afterschool, or parties. Another part of me that was
incommodious was that I clung onto my friends, they truthfully were extremely supportive and
entertaining people to be around, I cherished each and every one of the our memories together but
sadly, we gradually drifted apart. Instantaneously, even on the first

The Art Of The Human Body In Art
For centuries, artists treated the human body with reverence. The Greeks idealized the human body in
sculpture. Michelangelo idealized the human body in painting, as did the Neoclassical and Romantic
artists. While the Realists may have been the first to resist idealization of their subject material, it
wasn t until the Expressionists in the late 19th century that artists began to deliberately distort the
human body for a psychoanalytical purpose. Painters such as Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele
developed new painting styles to explore a greater truth not accessible through mere representation.
For example, Klimt further developed Gustave Moreau s Symbolist style, frequently recalling Greek
and Roman myths in his works, such as the Furies in Jurisprudence. Schiele used distortion of the
outer body to express a tormented inner state, such as in Seated Male Nude (self portrait).
Oskar Kokoschka s self portrait cover design for Der Sturm magazine continues the development of
Expressionism in two key ways. First, the figure s resemblance to Jesus Christ exhibits a continuation
of resorting to symbolic structures to convey a greater theme. Second, Kokoschka s decision to paint
himself reflects a trend of Expressionist artists at the time focusing on themselves as subjects for art.
Both of these techniques combine to express Kokoschka s self identification as an Expressionist
martyr.
The Expressionists were heavily influenced by the Symbolist s emphasis on non representative art to

The Alpine Mountains, The Alpine Mountains And The North...
Europe is the second smallest continent and though it is small it contains forty countries, it s heavily
populated just under six hundred million people. Its countries have had and still have a major impact
on world affairs, whether it s fashion industry, famous for their cuisines, and their advances in
technology, and the way some of these European countries enjoy high level of development despite
major physiographical challenges. Europe is rich for their resources like the cultivable soils which is
great for their farming and wild animals that can be domesticated to do help with labors. They are also
known for their rich fishing waters and they also contain deposits of oil and natural gas.
When it comes to climate in Europe they have it all from their warm Mediterranean Sea weather to icy
cold weather that comes from the Alps to moist woodlands. Europe is also known to be at the heart of
the land hemisphere that it is easy for them to have contact with other countries and are surrounded by

Freedom Of Religious Freedom
Freedom of religion When we say freedom of religion what is that exactly means? The First
Amendment describe the right of religion like this, everyone in the United States can practice to any
religion or not practice a religion. (Your Right to Religious Freedom) In the united states, there is no
an official religion and the government do not give any support for any religion institution because of
the government want to encourage and promoting religion in any ways. In addition to that, nobody can
penalize any citizen because of their religious beliefs. It s always best to keep the government out of
religion to protect religion liberty. The three United States founders were different religious
backgrounds. As most of us know the public schools are run by the government and they obey the
First Amendment. When any public education institution teach about the impacts of religion in
literature, history and philosophy they can t indorse religious beliefs or practices as part of the
catalogue. In the United States no one can prayer, theological reading and loudspeaker spiritual breach
in any public area that runs by government because they promote religion and this is protected by the
First Amendment, but when we say this we it s not including individuals. Individual have the right to
practice their religion, pray when and where ever they want to, as long as they don t interrupt other
people or activities for example, by forcing others to pray with them or practice their religion.

Painting Comparison Essay
In both art and science, the uses of color tend to play a role in how temperature is perceived. For art
blues can be perceived as cooler colors, while reds are perceived as warmer colors. But, while in
science the color order is in reverse, reds are perceived as cooler colors, while blues are perceived as
warmer colors. In this paper two different paintings will be discussed to see just how distinct colors
are used to perceive temperature.
The first painting that will be discussed is The Houses of Parliament from Westminster
Bridge by artist Andre Derain. Andre Derain was an artist that was a part of the Fauvism artistic
movement. Fauvism artist emphasized intense colors over the representational and realistic values
retained by artist of impressionism. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The subject matter of romantic painters included landscapes, religion, revolution, and
Woodburn 2 peaceful beauty. On the night of October 16, 1934, fire consumed the House of
Parliament in
London, and Turner decide to capture this event in his own view, and use the painting to represent
man s helplessness when confronted with the destructive powers of nature. In Turner s painting of The
Burning Houses of Lords and Commons, Turner shows just how important the right colors can be to
give a painting a certain feeling. The yellow and orange colors that are used draw the focus to the
center of the painting and this is Parliament on fire. The dark and dreary shades of the blues, and grays
give the painting a sad and depressed feeling. Which is good because it helps to represent the message
that Turner was trying to convey that man is helpless when confronted with the destruction of nature.
From both of these paintings we can see how color can be used to represent different temperatures. In
Andre Derain s painting The Houses of Parliament from Westminster Bridge, the different temperature
of colors is used to give the feeling of brightness, warmth, and life.
While in Joseph Mallord William Turner s painting The Burning Houses of Lords and

Sister Act Symbolism
The film, Sister Act, is a humorous story about a woman, Delores Van Cartier, who goes into hiding
from her shady lover at a Catholic convent. Sister Act has many Christian references, specifically
Roman Catholicism that convey popular stereotypes. These comedic stereotypes, whether intended or
not, add to the perception of Roman Catholicism and how the religion is further portrayed in the
media. When lounge singer, Delores Van Cartier, began a love affair with a married casino owner,
Vince LaRocca, she did not know what she got herself into until she finds Vince has killed another
man. Delores is part of a women s singing trio, hired by her love interest. She arranges and
choreographs all of their performances, illustrating her passion for music. When she realizes that her
lover has no desire to leave his wife, Delores decides enough is enough, and wishes to return her final
gift from Vince, as well as resign from her occupation. When she angrily walks in on him, she catches
him shooting a man, realizing his mob efforts. She panics and runs to the police station as Vince s men
try to chase after her, failing miserably, and turns Vince in. The detectives, who have been long
watching Vince, place her undercover at a Catholic convent to guard her life until they can set a court
date to arrest Vince. This is the start of Delores captivating adventure in the Catholic Church. When
Delores arrives at the convent, she is appalled that she must go undercover as a nun. She grew up in a
Catholic school, and had horrendous experiences with the nun teacher and, therefore, was not looking

Essay On War Of 1812 Justifiable
The War of 1812: Justifiable for the United States The war of 1812 could either be viewed as a
justifiable war or pointless to the American and English people. The United States declared war on the
British on June 18, 1812, for many reasons. To some, the causes of the war were not grave enough for
a real war to erupt. However, there are three main motives that clearly made it valid to declare war.
The British s actions of impressment, efforts to restrict the United State s trade, and the conquest for
land in Canada and Florida were major contributors of the war of 1812 being considered justified for
America. Before the war started, the British navy had a huge lack of sailors due to circumstances of
low pay or low skill level ( The Mariners Museum: Birth of the United States Navy. ). Obviously, the
British were not a fan of their scarcity of men. Britain decided to start impressing naval officers,
meaning that they would force any British sailor they could find to serve for the the royal navy (
Lambert, Andrew). British seamen started to abandon the British ships they worked on to work for
American merchants who would pay them more. This led the Royal Navy to the impressment of
American soldiers as well. An estimated figure of about 6,000 America men were pressed and forced

Authority Figures In The Film, Coach Carter
The film, Coach Carter directed by Thomas Carter, is based on the true story of a basketball coach in
Richmond, California. The basketball coach, Ken Carter, appeared on the news in 1999 when he
suspended his players from their basketball games because they cared more about basketball than their
grades. Through proper leadership, the players learned that it takes more than basketball to escape the
harsh reality of the inner city. They found that the right authority figures, proper ethics and academic
responsibilities will help them to defy the statistics of what happens to young men without proper
leadership. Majority of the players lacked leadership roles in the home. As stated in the movie, the
system is designed for these young men to fail. Coach Carter realized that there was a need for
discipline and he stepped up to the challenge. The system is designed for the players to fail because
there are authority figures who does not expect much from them. The school board and even their ...

proper sportsmanship. When Carter first took the coaching position, he taught the guys about
addressing themselves and others as sir which is a form of respect. One of the most important scene
was Coach Carter addressing the usage of the term nigga that the players commonly used.
Nigger/Nigga is a derogatory term used to insult our ancestors. If a white man used it, you d be ready
to fight. Your using it, teaches him to use it. These words are significant because nowadays, there are
people who uses the term as a trend but the underlying fact is that they are only showing that they lack
respect for themselves. The players were incapable of settling conflicts without resorting to violence.
This was demonstrated when there would be a trivial arguments and fights over simple things as

Advantages Of Voluntourism
Reading Between the Lines Voluntourism Topic tourism: Should Voluntourism trips be discouraged? It
is not uncommon to see on Facebook selfies taken by youths with village children some half naked
some fully naked. Teaching English in Schools, building a basketball court, painting beautiful murals
on the walls of new schools and distributing food and healthcare packs to the villages are some
activities that are commonly included in the itinerary of such Voluntourism trips. In the recent years,
there are a growing number of youths who take a gap year to volunteer overseas. Voluntourism can be
defined as a form of tourism in which travelers participate in voluntary work to help communities or
the environment in the places they are visiting (dictionary.com). In the context of Singapore, such trips
are normally termed as Overseas Service Learning Trips (OSLP). They are usually organized by
schools to bring students abroad to broaden the students world view (Poh, 2014) and serve the
community there. I have chosen three articles on the effects on Voluntourism. In this essay, I will be
taking a closer look at the arguments presented and critic and improve on the current system of

Natural Resources and Energy in the Rainforests
Natural Resources and Energy in the Rainforests
The beauty, majesty, and timelessness of a primary rainforest is indescribable. It is impossible to
capture on film, to describe in words, or to explain to those who have never had the awe inspiring
experience of standing in the heart of a primary rainforest. Rainforests have evolved over millions of
years to turn into the incredibly complex environments they are today. Rainforests represent a store of
living and breathing renewable natural resources that for eons, by virtue of their richness in both
animal and plant species, have contributed a wealth of resources for the survival and well being of
humankind. These resources have included basic food supplies, clothing, shelter, fuel, spices, ... Show

A single rainforest reserve in Peru is home to more species of birds than are found in the entire United
States.
One single tree in Peru was found to harbor forty three different species of ants a total that
approximates the entire number of ant species in the British Isles.
The number of species of fish in the Amazon exceeds the number found in the entire Atlantic Ocean.
The biodiversity of the tropical rainforest is so immense that less than 1 percent of its millions of
species have been studied by scientists for their active constituents and their possible uses. When an
acre of tropical rainforest is lost, the impact on the number of plant and animal species lost and their
possible uses is staggering. Scientists estimate that we are losing more than 137 species of plants and
animals every single day because of rainforest deforestation. Surprisingly, scientists have a better
understanding of how many stars there are in the galaxy than they have of how many species there are
on Earth. Estimates vary from 2 million to 100 million species, with a best estimate of somewhere
near 10 million; only 1.4 million of these species have actually been named. Today, rainforests occupy
only 2 percent of the entire Earth s surface and 6 percent of the world s land surface, yet these
remaining lush rainforests support over half of our planet s wild plants and trees and one half of the
world s wildlife. Hundreds and thousands of these rainforest species are being

The Success of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia in October 1917
The Bolshevik seizure of power or coup de tat of October 25th, 1917 was a culmination of both
internal and external failure to satisfy the needs of an oppressed Russian society. In contrast to the
spontaneous revolts earlier in 1917, the Bolshevik revolution was a carefully planned plot carried out
by professional revolutionaries. [1] The victory of the Marxist Lenin s Bolsheviks was due to the
failure of the Provisional Government in response to land policies; their failure to gain support from
the masses; the lack of real authority of the Provisional Government and the military failure of the
army. Secondly, the failure of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Bolshevik revolution came to prominence because of the Provisional Government s inability to
gain support from the Russian population. The government enjoyed little confidence amongst the
masses; and many of its members were largely unknown to the new Russia that had burst upon the
political scene. [3] Kerensky himself comments on the problematic circumstances his government
experienced, the old (governmental machine) had disappeared; the new was not yet established. The
support of the peasantry was critical in establishing popular rule, as historian Richard Abraham
comments, the largest social class in Russia was still the peasantry. Their reaction to the coming social
conflict would be crucial not least because peasant lads in grey coats were armed. While Prince Lvov
and his cronies did inherit everything the old regime had deserted in chaos and acknowledged the
solution of the problem requires, if not years, at least several months. The Provisional Government
failed to identify growing areas of concern within the Russian empire, proving fatal to the common
perception of the government. Industrial chaos, ineffective

Racial Disparities in Policing
Racial profiling, stereotyping, and different styles of policing has led to the disproportionate targeting
of minorities by law enforcement agencies. Warren et al. (2006) notes that law enforcement often use
two forms of racial profiling. One is defined by Warren et al. (2006) as out of place profiling. This
particular form of racial profiling targets an individual if they do not match the general make up of a
certain community. Another method of racial profiling Warren et al. (2006) explains is drug
interdiction profiles, which encourage officers to target drug traffickers using their racial background
to make traffic stops and search their vehicles for contraband. Furthermore, Terrill and Reisig (2003)

Women s Rights Is The Fight For Equality
Women s rights is the fight for the idea that women should have equal rights with men. Over history,
this has taken the form of gaining property rights, the women s suffrage, or the right of women to
vote, reproductive rights, and the right to work for for equal pay. Women were conditioned to be
treated like second class citizens solely because of their gender until a crucial movement in American
history during the late nineteenth century that would inspire a long fight for equality for generations to
come. The American women s movement was a tedious yet extraordinarily important movement that
challenged the social norms of a patriarchal society for their own recognition. Overall, this paper will

Declaration of Independence, which calls for equivalent treatment of women and men under the law

The main organizer of the Seneca Falls Convention was Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who is deemed as
one of the most important people that made an important change in women s rights. Stanton drafted
the Declaration of Sentiments, Grievances, and Resolutions, that related to the Declaration of

Among the 13 resolutions set forth in Stanton s Declaration was the goal of achieving the sacred right

with gloomy, wet, poor weather. Their food wasn t any better, bad stringy elk with bitter indigenous

Themes Of Edgar Allan Poe
Another of Poe s strong emotions was anger, leading him to seek revenge. Seasonal changes just as

Edgar Allan Poe s life experiences had a adult impact on the topics and themes of his writing. One of
the most common themes in Edgar Allen Poe s poems and clerestory relating to death are The Black
Cat, The Masque of the Red Death, Cast of Amontillado, Annabel Lee and The Raven . Prophet!
aforesaid I, thing of evil prophet still, if bird or devil! This in my opinion relates to how he did not

The screening Pornland, produced by Gail Dines, focuses on the pornography industry and how the
visuality of gender and sexuality influences gender construction and the power level between males

highlights how sexualised images from pornographic films are slowly becoming a part of popular
culture, especially music videos, television shows and films. For example, the music video of the song

pornography into normalised culture. The production of pornography is

The battles for Okinawa, Wake and Guam all were ample testament to the Japanese willingness to die
in the face of overwhelming odds. The kamikaze was a
perfect example of the Japanese battle attitude. Japanese pilots would strap themselves into planes
loaded with explosives and fly them into American ships. By the war amp;#8217;s conclusion the
Japanese kamikaze attacks had sunk 3 aircraft carriers, damaged 285 craft and sunk a total of 34. The
Japanese also did well in increasing support for the war effort. amp;#8220;Both scientist and
publicists were in fact powerful instruments inflaming popular hatred against the democratic countries
and in regimenting the people into blindly supporting the war of aggrandizement (Ferrell 16). ; This
resolve would only have been strengthened had American and Russian forces tried to invade Japan.
This almost suicidal type of fighting would have resulted in a tremendous amount of casualties for
both sides. American casualties alone were projected at 500,000. The amount of deaths caused by an
invasion would easily dwarfed those of the atomic bombings (Purcell 82).

Symbolism In The Bloody Chamber
Angela Carter s The Bloody Chamber depicts a woman as the heroic figure who represents
persistence, vigor, and passion as she continually encourages and inevitably saves her daughter from
the grips of death. Carter s attempt to effectively portray a woman as an animal like hero is done so by
the mother as seen progressively throughout the story. At the same age as her daughter now, the
heroine already accomplished so much and created an identity illustrating her beastliness, power,
womanhood, and strength. In The Bloody Chamber , Carter s nameless heroine is in fact the mother
due to her fierce and ferocious attitude as she is explored throughout the story from her daughters
admiring descriptions and her own fearless actions.
The girl is eager to marry the marquis so she can transform into a woman and develop a strong
identity as her mother has. The girl admiringly notices that her mother is eagle featured, indomitable,
which illustrates a fierce and tough exterior that correlates to her personality (Carter 2). Boasting that
her mother outfaced a junkful of Chinese pirates, nursed a village through a visitation of the plague,
shot a man eating tiger with her own hand, as this depicts the girl s mother as a strong independent
character who stands tall in the face of adversity (Carter 2). Her beastliness is evident as we are now
aware that the mother has killed a tiger with her very own hands and she would not mind doing it
again. After the father died, the mother was distraught but prevailed through her misery able to grow
into an even stronger woman and mother for her daughter. As the girl reflects on such a difficult
period in their lives we are able to see how much her mother s growth also affected her as she states,
my mother... had gladly, scandalously, defiantly, beggared herself for love... grown magnificently
eccentric in hardship which illustrates her mother did not allow her grief to control her or inhibit her
abilities to be a mom (Carter 2). Being a single parent helped her flourish as a mother and as a person.
The mother is already portrayed as a strong female figure before this information is introduced but
after the audience gains this knowledge about her, it is clear that the mother is

Along with the irregularities in meter, neither poem has a regular line length or rhyming pattern.
Dickinson s poem contains alternating tetrameters and trimeters, with the exception of the first line,
which contains 7 syllables. The poem contains some irregular rhyme; heard in line 5 rhymes with bird
in line 7, and Sea in line 10 rhymes with Me in line 12. Whitman s poem contains even more irregular
line lengths. The first 4 lines of each stanza vary from 12 to 15 syllables, but the last 4 lines of each
stanza vary from 5 to 8 syllables. Unlike in Dickinson s poem, the rhyming scheme carries throughout
the whole poem, although the AABBCDED rhyme pattern contains a few cases of near rhyme.
Dickinson and Whitman also use similar poetic devices in Hope is a Thing with Feathers and O

Does The Otl Mathematics Instruction For Conceptual...
Does the OTL Mathematics Instruction for Conceptual Understanding Matter?
Some studies have shown that preservice teachers and in service elementary teachers have knowledge
gaps in their mathematics content and pedagogical content knowledge (e.g., Ball, 1990; Ma, 1999).
The knowledge that teachers have for teaching influence their instruction and the lack of such can
limit how they teach mathematics for understanding (Borko Putnam, 1996). For this reason, teacher
preparation programs and professional development forums should emphasize and provide the
opportunities for learning to teach mathematics for conceptual understanding. Not only do such
opportunities build on preservice teachers mathematics content knowledge, but they also introduce
them to the new ways of teaching mathematics that they may not have experienced in their earlier
mathematics learning.
The findings from this study suggest that frequent experiences in learning mathematics for conceptual
understanding through particular strategies is related to an increase in PSTs knowledge about teaching
mathematics. In particular, more opportunities that allow PSTs to learn to show why a procedure
works was significantly related to the average PSTs increase in content knowledge between the
teacher preparation programs in the United States. Similarly, within the Polish generalist, United
States specialist, and Russian teacher preparation programs the relationships between the OTL to show

Nonetheless, the two companies had very different images in the oil industry. Mobil was seen as
having a combative feistiness, whereas Exxon had a relentlessly efficient stuffiness. 5 Because of the
size of the companies, the merger was scrutinized by antitrust regulators and, in order to complete the
merger, both companies had to get rid of certain operations, including almost 2,500 service stations in
the United States and Europe. By the mere fact that a growing population of environmentally

three basic types of brake actuation circuitry, and will point out some common problems to be avoided

The designer needs to know the minimum, nominal, and maximum volume of fluid required. Different
types of actuation operate in different ranges of volumetric displacements.
1
Input Pedal Force Input pedal force is generally expressed as a maximum force allowed to generate
the desired maximum brake line pressure. Again, there are governing agencies that make
recommendations to assist in identifying this value. BRAKE ACTUATION CIRCUITS The system
designer can accomplish brake actuation in different ways. The use of a direct means of actuation,
such as hydraulic pressure to apply the brakes is but one method of brake actuation. Another type of
actuation is reverse modulation or negative braking as it is referred to in the European community.
Reverse modulation uses hydraulic pressure to release a spring apply brake. Maximum torque is
produced when hydraulic pressure is absent either intentionally or due to system failure. The subject
of reverse modulation requires further detailed explanation beyond the scope fo this paper. Also
beyond the scope of this paper are pneumatic and vacuum boosted hydraulic circuits as it is felt that
the trend is clearly away from them toward full hydraulic circuits. This paper will discuss three broad
categories of hydraulic pressure actuation circuits, these are:
cylinder bore closing off the compensating port, see Figure 1 (E). This completely seals the hydraulic

The Right Of Bear Arms
Gun Control The Right to Bear Arms was the second amendment put into place when creating the
nation. It gives the people of our country the right to keep and own a gun. Today, just over two
hundred years later, one of the biggest debates in society is on gun control and how the people should
be handling their weapons. The gun control in the country is something that should be taken more
seriously as lives and well beings are at stake. Former president Bill Clinton commented on gun
control, saying When we got organized as a country, [and] wrote a fairly radical Constitution, with a
radical Bill of Rights, giving radical amounts of freedom to Americans, it was assumed that Americans
who had that freedom would use it responsibly .... When personal freedom is being abused, you have
to move to limit it. We ve misused this right to bear arms and have been forced to take many
precautions regarding the bill. Gun control, or, the lack thereof, has struck a fear in many that has
spread quickly throughout the nation. Our culture has ingrained the second amendment into itself,
using it as a pass to do almost whatever. In light of the stereotyped, yet nonetheless accurate,
obsession of firearms that the American people proudly uphold, restricting the use of guns proves to
be a much more difficult feat than one would have you believe. America s pervasive gun culture stems
in part from its colonial history, revolutionary roots, frontier expansion, and the Second Amendment .

The Importance Of Nursing Leadership
Nursing guidance is a complex but essential part of the nursing workforce. Guidance can come in the
form of management and in the form of leadership. The two terms are often used interchangeably, but
do not always mean the same thing. The nurse manager is often someone who has authority from the
facility to be in management. The nursing leader may not have authority over other nurses, but may be
a strong guide in the workplace for other nurses and nursing staff. Nursing as a profession is ever
changing and increasingly challenging. Nurse managers are tasked with an enormous variety of

dynamics is an essential part of how each nurse functions. Nurses, being mentally and physically
stressed, need to have support and guidance from a nurse leader to feel confident about performance.
The impact of nursing leaders can be a positive and guiding force for the younger or more

to become a leader for future nurses. Future nurses and the future of the nursing practice can
positively benefit from having a revolving new nurse nurse leader cycle. With a profession as dynamic
as nursing, the involvement of positive leaders and role models is essential for the practice to grow

Flatworms Essay
The Effects of Ethanol and Caffeine on the Nervous System of Flatworms The significance of the
study is to show how different drugs, or chemicals could the central nervous system of the flatworms.
It examines the effects of depressants and stimulants in the presence of light on the central nervous
system. Flatworms are known as one of the simplest worm groups. They can be free living or
parasitic. They can be found under rocks, springs, and streams. Flatworms are very small and thin to
be seen. They exhibit a bilateral symmetry. Flatworms have one of the simplest nervous system among
other species with two nerves that are running down the body on either side of the flatworm. Its
nervous system contains two simple brains known as ganglia, ... Show more content on

The eyespots of the flatworms are very simple structures, which is hard to form images because the
hollows lack the needed structures for focusing not like human eye structure. The pigment that reacts
to the light, it contains a protein called opsin. Its function to change a wavelength of radiation into
something else so the nerve can respond to. Its only function to distinguish between light and dark.
The eyespots are located at the head end, which are known as primitive eyes. Flatworms tend to move
away from the negative stimulus. The flatworm will go to the direction that the eye is less stimulated
while detecting light. It will move toward darkness to avoid light to protect themselves from the
predators. Flatworm is a model used to examine regeneration and stem cells biology to know the
functions of stem cells in all animals. Regeneration can be affected by certain chemicals, shock and
temperature. Two of the common drugs, or chemicals are caffeine and ethanol. Stimulants in general
are drugs that increase energy, attention, heart rate, breathing rate, and suppress appetite. The most
common stimulants are caffeine, nicotine, Adderall, cocaine, and Ritalin. Caffeine

Css And Cascading Style Sheet
CSS or Cascading Style Sheet is a language used to format a document written in a markup language
such as HTML. It is used primarily to format elements such as colour, font, layout, and positioning.
CSS can be used in three different ways. External, embedded and inline. Each of which I will expand
on later. CSS was initially released in December 1996 and has evolved through 4 levels, CSS 1, 2, 2.1
and 3. CSS gives web designers the ability to create rules and apply these rules to multiple different
elements within a website. In the case of External CSS, this way of formatting being completely
separate from the design means any change required by the client can be altered on the style sheet and
will effect every instance within the site where the CSS is being used. I will expand more on the three
types of CSS later in this presentation. CSS use can lead to faster page downloads [1] Most web
browsers will load rules from the CSS once and then cache the data to use when each page is loaded.
This means using CSS in websites can lead to lighter page loads [1], meaning as the browser is simply
pulling information from the cache, the web pages will load much faster then without. This will
therefore result in lower requirements from the server side. Since the majority of CSS is completely
separate to the content of the website, making small, spread changes or troubleshooting any design
problems becomes simple. It allows the designer to control every visual aspect of the

Severe PPH (blood loss 1000 ml) was not detected in the both groups. The results of this study is
consistent with at least three other studies, which showed no benefit of ECC for the prevention of
PPH. First, Backes et al. [25] who studied the effect of early versus delayed umbilical cord clamping
in infants with congenital heart disease . They reported that no significant differences were observed
between the two groups in relation to the amount of blood loss during the third and fourth stage of
labour. Second, Chidre and Chirumamilla [26] who had conducted a randomized controlled trial about
the impact of early versus delayed umbilical cord clamping on post partum blood loss . They
concluded that post partum blood loss in early and delayed cord clamping groups was nearly similar.
Third, Andersson et al. [27] who had studied the effects of delayed compared with early umbilical
cord clamping on maternal PPH and cord blood gas sampling . They stated that, the differences
between the DCC and ECC groups with regard to PPH were small and non significant. The results of
the present study are also supported by three systematic reviews and meta analysis studies which are
Dauda and Muhammad; McDonald et al ; McDonald, and Middleton. [28,29,30] all of them have
showed no significant differences between delayed and immediate umbilical cord clamping techniques
in the incidence and severity of PPH and

How Does Genji Define Love in The Tale of Genji by...
In the epic novel written by Murasaki Shikibu during the Heian period of the Japan, the leading
character Hikaru Genji was described a nearly flawless person. The wisdom, the perfect looking, the
personal background as a prince every piece of his characteristic was the presentation of attractive, or
shining , as what Murasaki Shikibu illustrated by his name. With the qualities that make Genji shines ,
as what was expected, Genji had a huge amount of romantic affairs involved true love that neither men
practicing monogamy nor polygamy would ever expect to approach. However a query exists: what is
love in Genji s dictionary?
In order to understand Genji s love, it is critical for us to look back upon his very beginning of love
and life, as it originates with Lady Fujitsubo during his childhood and puberty phases. Lady Fujitsubo
accompanies Genji within the process of his psychological and physical development as the role of
mother and sister; with her perfect talent and appearance plus the natural Oedipus complex, Genji
developed a deep adoration toward her. As the very first women Genji had ever loved, Lady Fujitsubo
was the one of eternity . The relationship between them had never approached to a completion, which
left Genji with regret and void throughout the rest of his life; ever since that, his life long goal of love
was to love someone that is Lady Fujitsubo. Every woman he loved afterward had one or more parts
of Lady Fujitsubo involved; the most obvious

What Is The Use Of Pathos In Columbine And In Cold Blood
The literary nonfiction pieces Columbine, written by Dave Cullen, and In Cold Blood, written by
Truman Capote, uniquely develop the stories of their killers through the use of rhetorical devices and
careful presentation of information. Cullen frequently employs informal diction and teenage slang to
connect the reader to the mindsets of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Additionally, Columbine features
manipulation of syntax to emphasize significant information while presenting it in a simple and
understated manner. On the other hand, Capote creates pathos while depicting Perry Smith s passive
and sentimental nature to make the reader feel sympathetic. Also, In Cold Blood utilizes imagery to
make the reader view Dick Hickock as dangerous and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Early on, Capote makes Smith seem a more sympathetic character, Yes, and he had told Dick was
true... Sierra Madre? (Capote, 17). Capote makes Perry seem almost childlike as he describes Perry s
naive plan to search for gold in the Sierra Madre, which causes the reader to wrongly assume Smith is
innocent, or at least more so than Hickock. While describing the murder of the Clutter family, Perry
states, And I thought... So I went back upstairs, (277). Truman Capote deliberately includes Perry s
feeling that It was like [he] wasn t a part of it. More as though [he] was reading a story, to show the
level of dissociation Perry experiences. Even after Smith is found guilty of murder, the reader still
feels some sympathy for Perry as Capote hints that Perry cannot be held accountable for his own
actions. Just before he is hanged, Smith remarks, It would be meaningless to apologize for what I did.
Even inappropriate. But I do. I apologize, (392 393). Capote includes Perry s last words, which carry
significant emotional weight, to evoke a final sympathetic reaction in the reader. Through Perry Smith,
Capote creates pathos to demonstrate the harsh nature of capital punishment and cause the reader to
wonder if it is the right

Mending the Transatlantic Rift Essay
Mending the Transatlantic Rift
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 ushered in an era of dramatic change for foreign policy
and the international system. Most obviously, the United States sense of invulnerability eroded as an
acute awareness to the perils of terrorism gripped the American public. In American foreign policy, the
dominant paradigms evolved. Whereas the Cold War notion of the centrality of powerful nation states
had helped order the Bush administration s outlook before the attacks, the new paradigms explicitly
accounted for the importance of non state actors and rogue regimes as the salient elements of
American foreign policy. In emphasizing rogue states, President George W. Bush focused on regime

Established as a Cold War era counterweight to Soviet power, NATO is characterized by its
commitment to democratic values and practices that, along with its unique, integrated military
structure, sustains it even at times when its members short term strategic calculations diverge.
(Hunter) In theory, then, the bonds between the United States and Europe should be close and
enduring. Indeed, the interests of the two entities have largely converged throughout NATO s half
century history despite occasional differences.
A rift has emerged in this alliance in the aftermath of the attacks of September11, 2002 that analysts
characterize as unprecedented in its scope, intensity, and, at times, pettiness. (Asmus) Immediately
after the attacks, Europe coalesced in support for the United States as sympathy for Americans
dominated public opinion. The goodwill evaporated quickly, however, when it became clear that the
United States planned to use the altered geopolitical landscape as one of the justifications for a
preemptive war to displace Saddam Hussein s dictatorial

Attenuated Vaccine
Smallpox is considered as an acute contagious disease that is induced by the variola virus. It used to
be one of the world s most disastrous diseases known to mankind. The last known natural case was in
Somalia in 1977. It was declared eradicated in 1980 following a global immunization campaign led by
the World Health Organization. Several vaccination campaigns, surveillance and preventive measures
were held out, targeting the infected areas and affected communities. These approaches were
employed to combat the disease. The eradication strategy relied on routine and mass vaccination. The
eradication of smallpox is the extinction of virus by the synchronization of vaccination, rendering the
disease nonexistent and control excess. The obliteration ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Presently, vaccines have an outstanding safety record and most vaccine scares are just false alarms or
myths. In that respect are several benefits when it comes to vaccination, which includes helping in
eradication, elimination and prevention of diseases, it helps in reducing mortality and morbidity rates
and other complications. Vaccines can help in increasing the life expectancy rates by protecting
against diseases. In developing countries vaccination programs are believed to be the cornerstones of
primary health care services. There are also certain limitation or risks to having vaccinations and its
side effects varies in different individuals. For instance, few people may endure from a mild reaction
to a certain vaccine and definitely it is short lived. It is far better to be safe than sorry. The hazards of
having serious infections or diseases that can be fatal is way greater than taking a chance of
experiencing a serious consequence. Using a vaccine is much cheaper compared to treating a serious
illness. The most severe allergic reaction following an administration of a vaccine is called an
anaphylactic reaction. The person may experience difficulty in breathing and sometime may collapse.
This is extremely rare and the vaccination staff is trained to deal with such events. These reactions are
completely reversible if treated promptly. The benefits of vaccination are

  • 2. Unfreedoms Cry, the Beloved County is packed with unfreedoms and exploitation. Throughout my paper I will discuss how these are evident when the novel is evaluated using what was in some of the readings that we read this semester, then I will discuss the global implications of Apartheid. The readings that I will be using are Development as Freedom by Amartya Sen, Three Economic Paradigms by Susan Feiner, and The Structure of Dependence by Theotonio Dos Santos. Finally, I will analyze the global implications of the system of Apartheid. In this article she wrote about three different ways to view a given situation. Her three economic paradigms are conservative/ free market, liberal/ imperfectionist, and radical/ exploitation. Free market economics states that individuals are free, independent, rational choosers who are motivated by self interest. They believe in a free market and that the government should have no control over it, and that this will lead to competitive markets and economic growth. Liberals also use a market system; however, they believe that government intervention is necessary. They think that some people don t have the resources at their disposal to achieve upward mobility. Liberals believe that they it is necessary for governments to provide an education to all people so that they have a chance to improve their living conditions. Gertrude s son is an example of the government not successfully accomplishing this. In the slums, children are not given the education that they need in order to succeed later in life. This is one example of how the government in South Africa is not doing what an imperfectionist would recommend they do. The last of the three economic paradigms is the radical perspective. Radicals have very firm theories of how workers are exploited by their employers. They explain minority have low income and status because they have a history of being exploited. They believe ... That company was Cardozo and Co, Inc., incorporated in Massachusetts, but headquartered in Miami, FL. The IPO was successful, and the public company decided to remain with the accountant. After the IPO, the accountant provided tax advice on matters, such as sheltering money to the Cayman Islands, and helped to prepare the financial statements for the proxy statement during a merger to another company that would significantly increase its worth. The auditor s opinion on the financial statements prepared had been released to the public, and even used by a Prosser Bank to provide a loan to Cardozo and Co, Inc. Ultramares requires privity, the accountant has a fiduciary duty only to whom they performed work for or an entity very close to privity. If Ultramares was used by Prosser Bank and the shareholders, it would fail on several requirements, but primarily due to the fact that privity is not present, and the parties existence was unknown to the accountant. In the case of Tricontinental Industries, Ltd. v. PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, Tricontinental relied on the Anicom, Inc. s financial statements audited by PWC, but PWC did not note in its opinion the discrepancies it discovered during the audit, and Tricontinental entered into an Asset Purchase Agreement. Anicom eventually restated its financials and became bankrupt. Tricontinenal blames PWC for negligence. The judge ruled in favor of PWC. Even though this case has different facts than the Cardozo and Co, Inc. situation, under Ultramares, the accountant intended his work to be used by his client. Southern Colonies Similarities Comparison Essay U.S History G Block Valentina Stephens 29/9/17 North vs. South Colonies The Northern and Southern colonies share many similarities when it comes to government leadership, immigration, the treatment of women and the use of slavery. However there are also several differences that influence the social structure of the respective territories. The Southern colonies were considered Virginia, Maryland, Georgia North and South Carolina. Which had a very warm climate which was excellent for farming. While the Northern states were Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey. The political and social movements of the South were controlled and lead majoritively by the farmers that grew the cash crops and had the most money. While the North had a more structured government system, much more influenced by England that followed set laws and agreements in comparison to the South. Ben Franklin heavily influenced the people of the North by preaching about the Enlightenment. Which was a movement that originated in Europe which spoke of obtaining truths through experimentation and scientific reasoning. Since the Puritans were big supporters of public education, making sure everyone would be able to read the bible, these new ideas were spread through books and pamphlets. In comparison to the South which did not catch on to these Enlightenment ideas as fast as the North did because they did not care much for education. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Manatees, The Gentle Giant Is Going Extinct Essays The West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus) is a marine mammal that lives in the coastal waters and around the offshore reefs of Belize. Manatees have large gray bodies covered with algae or barnacles. They are herbivores that consume marine vegetation such as sea grass and surface regularly to breathe. They reside in sea grass beds and in mangroves that provide them with shelter. The West Indian Manatee is listed as vulnerable under the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and may eventually be listed as endangered. They are at a huge risk of decline due to coastal development and other changes to the environment (Auil). In Belize, mangroves estimate up to 3.4% of the land area, about 296 square miles (CITE). Mangroves serve important ecological service such as erosion control, filter, and clean, while also providing shelter to many marine organisms like lemon sharks, invertebrates, shrimp, and manatees. There is a lot of biodiversity in mangroves and due to the clearance for urban and rural development, many of these organisms are losing their homes (Patterson). Belize s coastal areas are usually sea grass beds. Sea grass destruction strip away habitats from numerous lobster, conch, fish, turtles, and manatees (CITE). Sea grass is the manatee s main food source and destruction of these beds limits their grazing and range. Watercraft traffic in these shallow areas is also another reason of harming the sea grass beds. Watercrafts are a huge threat for manatees by of degradation of sea grass beds. Watercrafts are also dangerous in the sense that their propellers strike the manatees which is one of the causes of their deaths. Many manatee accidents have been reported due to watercraft collision in Belize, and in the state of Florida. In 2003, the Florida Fish Wildlife Conservation Commission showed a report that a total of 305 manatees were killed due to watercrafts. This also depends on the speed of the watercraft that is travelling. If it is travelling at a higher speed, it can damage the manatee tremendously or even kill it. • 7. Analysis Of The Poem Twenty One Love Poems By Adrienne... Adrienne Rich was a highly acclaimed twentieth century poet who railed against war and the injustices in the world, and also used imagery that spoke tenderly of love feelings that she sensed were both highly individual for her, but also universal. Twenty One Love Poems were written between 1974 1976 to her lover of the time, and they track the course of the relationship through the sweet beginning stages, the development of mature love, and all the way through to its dissolution due to her partner s seeming inability to come out and admit to her homosexuality at a time in society when relationships between women were not endorsed or supported. The language in these poems is very rich and weaves both ugly city imagery and elegant metaphors and similes together, with the apparent intention of making the reader search inside to see if the images and ideas conveyed by the language can be applied to the reader s own experience of living too. While these poems are highly individualistic and at times very personal, this impressive and moving body of poetic accomplishment also reflects themes to which all human beings can relate. In an interview with Kate Waldman in The Paris Review, Rich herself states that: As long as I can remember I have cared about the timbre, the phrasing of a poetic line. Ever since Snapshots, I ve worked close to the pull and release of voices... The voices may be individual, but they re searching for a shared moral reality. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Affirmative Action And Its Effect On Society Essay In Martin Luther King s I Have a Dream Speech, he states I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character , this appeals to the emotions that judging based on a person s race is wrong. For this reason affirmative action in higher education admission should alter for it creates a perpetual racial preference in admission. Affirmative action is controversial due its issue of whether the generation of today should pay for the past injustices done to certain ethnicities. It questions the constitutionality of its existence and whether it perpetuates racial discrimination. Although affirmative action greatly promotes diversity and exposes diverse perspectives in an educational field, it s time to realize its modern predicaments and visualize how to better progress terms of admission for the future of the diversified generations of America. Thus it is vital to address the reasons why prolonging affirmative action hinders the creation for better opportunities to those at a disadvantaged. The dilemma of affirmative action is defining equal opportunities, especially to ethnicities who historically felt injustice. The famous U.S landmark case Regents of the University of California v. Bakke (1978), where Allan Bakke, a white man, was twice rejected to University of California Medical School at Davis, ruled that racial quotas violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment , however race can serve a part as one ... I sat in silence, ensnared within my chaotic mind while everyone s elated voices stretched across the classroom like a contagious disease but my immunity was too study to catch a speck of it. I was never a big fan of change, especially ones that strike you without any warning. The transition from elementary to junior high wasn t the challenging part for me, it was the fact that I felt alone. It never occurred to me that everything was temporary, even friendships. Initially, going into seventh grade was absolutely petrifying, nearly all my friends was in a different T.A., while in the other hand, I was placed in a class filled with unfamiliar faces. Everyone appeared to be recognizable to each other, I felt as if I was an outcast, just a girl at the back of the classroom. At that time, the most bothersome traits about me was that I was shy, reticent, and anxious. I swore there must have been something wrong with me, how hard could it be to approach another student and simply talk or just plainly introduce myself. Although, I attempted to be as optimistic as I possibly could, I would still be able to be with my friends at lunch, afterschool, or parties. Another part of me that was incommodious was that I clung onto my friends, they truthfully were extremely supportive and entertaining people to be around, I cherished each and every one of the our memories together but sadly, we gradually drifted apart. • 13. The Art Of The Human Body In Art For centuries, artists treated the human body with reverence. The Greeks idealized the human body in sculpture. Michelangelo idealized the human body in painting, as did the Neoclassical and Romantic artists. While the Realists may have been the first to resist idealization of their subject material, it wasn t until the Expressionists in the late 19th century that artists began to deliberately distort the human body for a psychoanalytical purpose. Painters such as Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele developed new painting styles to explore a greater truth not accessible through mere representation. For example, Klimt further developed Gustave Moreau s Symbolist style, frequently recalling Greek and Roman myths in his works, such as the Furies in Jurisprudence. Schiele used distortion of the outer body to express a tormented inner state, such as in Seated Male Nude (self portrait). Oskar Kokoschka s self portrait cover design for Der Sturm magazine continues the development of Expressionism in two key ways. First, the figure s resemblance to Jesus Christ exhibits a continuation of resorting to symbolic structures to convey a greater theme. Second, Kokoschka s decision to paint himself reflects a trend of Expressionist artists at the time focusing on themselves as subjects for art. Both of these techniques combine to express Kokoschka s self identification as an Expressionist martyr. The Expressionists were heavily influenced by the Symbolist s emphasis on non representative art to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

On the night of October 16, 1934, fire consumed the House of Parliament in London, and Turner decide to capture this event in his own view, and use the painting to represent man s helplessness when confronted with the destructive powers of nature. In Turner s painting of The Burning Houses of Lords and Commons, Turner shows just how important the right colors can be to give a painting a certain feeling. The yellow and orange colors that are used draw the focus to the center of the painting and this is Parliament on fire. The dark and dreary shades of the blues, and grays give the painting a sad and depressed feeling. Which is good because it helps to represent the message that Turner was trying to convey that man is helpless when confronted with the destruction of nature. From both of these paintings we can see how color can be used to represent different temperatures. • 18. Sister Act Symbolism The film, Sister Act, is a humorous story about a woman, Delores Van Cartier, who goes into hiding from her shady lover at a Catholic convent. Sister Act has many Christian references, specifically Roman Catholicism that convey popular stereotypes. These comedic stereotypes, whether intended or not, add to the perception of Roman Catholicism and how the religion is further portrayed in the media. When lounge singer, Delores Van Cartier, began a love affair with a married casino owner, Vince LaRocca, she did not know what she got herself into until she finds Vince has killed another man. Delores is part of a women s singing trio, hired by her love interest. She arranges and choreographs all of their performances, illustrating her passion for music. When she realizes that her lover has no desire to leave his wife, Delores decides enough is enough, and wishes to return her final gift from Vince, as well as resign from her occupation. When she angrily walks in on him, she catches him shooting a man, realizing his mob efforts. She panics and runs to the police station as Vince s men try to chase after her, failing miserably, and turns Vince in. The detectives, who have been long watching Vince, place her undercover at a Catholic convent to guard her life until they can set a court date to arrest Vince. This is the start of Delores captivating adventure in the Catholic Church. When Delores arrives at the convent, she is appalled that she must go undercover as a nun. She grew up in a Catholic school, and had horrendous experiences with the nun teacher and, therefore, was not looking forward to her temporary life. She begins her nunnery being vastly disobedient and flamboyant, too much for the strict Mother Superior. Eventually Delores is forced to join the struggling choir as a disciplinary measure, and ends up finding her place among the nuns. Delores, renamed Sister Mary Clarence, dedicates her time at the convent to improving the choir far beyond expectations. The convent and mass service improve tremendously, filling up the pews with large congregations. Sister Mary becomes exceedingly popular in the eyes of the nuns and surrounding community. Essay On War Of 1812 Justifiable The War of 1812: Justifiable for the United States The war of 1812 could either be viewed as a justifiable war or pointless to the American and English people. The United States declared war on the British on June 18, 1812, for many reasons. To some, the causes of the war were not grave enough for a real war to erupt. However, there are three main motives that clearly made it valid to declare war. The British s actions of impressment, efforts to restrict the United State s trade, and the conquest for land in Canada and Florida were major contributors of the war of 1812 being considered justified for America. Before the war started, the British navy had a huge lack of sailors due to circumstances of low pay or low skill level ( The Mariners Museum: Birth of the United States Navy. ). Obviously, the British were not a fan of their scarcity of men. Britain decided to start impressing naval officers, meaning that they would force any British sailor they could find to serve for the the royal navy ( Lambert, Andrew). British seamen started to abandon the British ships they worked on to work for American merchants who would pay them more. This led the Royal Navy to the impressment of American soldiers as well. Symbolism In The Bloody Chamber Angela Carter s The Bloody Chamber depicts a woman as the heroic figure who represents persistence, vigor, and passion as she continually encourages and inevitably saves her daughter from the grips of death. Carter s attempt to effectively portray a woman as an animal like hero is done so by the mother as seen progressively throughout the story. At the same age as her daughter now, the heroine already accomplished so much and created an identity illustrating her beastliness, power, womanhood, and strength. The girl is eager to marry the marquis so she can transform into a woman and develop a strong identity as her mother has. The girl admiringly notices that her mother is eagle featured, indomitable, which illustrates a fierce and tough exterior that correlates to her personality (Carter 2). Boasting that her mother outfaced a junkful of Chinese pirates, nursed a village through a visitation of the plague, shot a man eating tiger with her own hand, as this depicts the girl s mother as a strong independent character who stands tall in the face of adversity (Carter 2). Her beastliness is evident as we are now aware that the mother has killed a tiger with her very own hands and she would not mind doing it again. After the father died, the mother was distraught but prevailed through her misery able to grow into an even stronger woman and mother for her daughter. As the girl reflects on such a difficult period in their lives we are able to see how much her mother s growth also affected her as she states, my mother... had gladly, scandalously, defiantly, beggared herself for love... grown magnificently eccentric in hardship which illustrates her mother did not allow her grief to control her or inhibit her abilities to be a mom (Carter 2). Some studies have shown that preservice teachers and in service elementary teachers have knowledge gaps in their mathematics content and pedagogical content knowledge (e.g., Ball, 1990; Ma, 1999). The knowledge that teachers have for teaching influence their instruction and the lack of such can limit how they teach mathematics for understanding (Borko Putnam, 1996). For this reason, teacher preparation programs and professional development forums should emphasize and provide the opportunities for learning to teach mathematics for conceptual understanding. Not only do such opportunities build on preservice teachers mathematics content knowledge, but they also introduce them to the new ways of teaching mathematics that they may not have experienced in their earlier mathematics learning. The findings from this study suggest that frequent experiences in learning mathematics for conceptual understanding through particular strategies is related to an increase in PSTs knowledge about teaching mathematics. In particular, more opportunities that allow PSTs to learn to show why a procedure works was significantly related to the average PSTs increase in content knowledge between the teacher preparation programs in the United States. He wrote, His strength or weakness, then, turns on his personal capacity to influence the conduct of men who make up the government. His influence becomes the mark of his leadership... Presidential ...means nothing but the president. Power means his influence. The president s ability to lead people means that people give him/her power. Neustadt recognizes how, in form, all presidents are leaders, nowadays, explaining how many other people or entities seek guidance and leadership, and that the president, as the Great Initiator is the most suited person to deliver it. • 41. The Right Of Bear Arms Gun Control The Right to Bear Arms was the second amendment put into place when creating the nation. It gives the people of our country the right to keep and own a gun. Today, just over two hundred years later, one of the biggest debates in society is on gun control and how the people should be handling their weapons. The gun control in the country is something that should be taken more seriously as lives and well beings are at stake. Former president Bill Clinton commented on gun control, saying When we got organized as a country, [and] wrote a fairly radical Constitution, with a radical Bill of Rights, giving radical amounts of freedom to Americans, it was assumed that Americans who had that freedom would use it responsibly .... When personal freedom is being abused, you have to move to limit it. We ve misused this right to bear arms and have been forced to take many precautions regarding the bill. Gun control, or, the lack thereof, has struck a fear in many that has spread quickly throughout the nation. Our culture has ingrained the second amendment into itself, using it as a pass to do almost whatever. In light of the stereotyped, yet nonetheless accurate, obsession of firearms that the American people proudly uphold, restricting the use of guns proves to be a much more difficult feat than one would have you believe. America s pervasive gun culture stems in part from its colonial history, revolutionary roots, frontier expansion, and the Second Amendment . ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Importance Of Nursing Leadership Nursing guidance is a complex but essential part of the nursing workforce. Guidance can come in the form of management and in the form of leadership. The two terms are often used interchangeably, but do not always mean the same thing. The nurse manager is often someone who has authority from the facility to be in management. The nursing leader may not have authority over other nurses, but may be a strong guide in the workplace for other nurses and nursing staff. Nursing as a profession is ever changing and increasingly challenging. Nurse leaders are the background to the nursing care. Effective nurse leaders can promote a positive workforce and a healthy work place for other nurses. Workplace dynamics is an essential part of how each nurse functions. Nurses, being mentally and physically stressed, need to have support and guidance from a nurse leader to feel confident about performance. The impact of nursing leaders can be a positive and guiding force for the younger or more inexperienced nurse. Having strong relationships with solid leaders can instill values in the beginning stages of a newer nurses career. Gaining insight and core concepts from a more experienced leader can make a world of difference in the way a new nurse performs, provides patient care, and sets future goals for themselves. A newer nurse with a positive role model and nurse leader can model themselves to become a leader for future nurses. Future nurses and the future of the nursing practice can positively benefit from having a revolving new nurse nurse leader cycle. • 44. Css And Cascading Style Sheet CSS or Cascading Style Sheet is a language used to format a document written in a markup language such as HTML. It is used primarily to format elements such as colour, font, layout, and positioning. CSS can be used in three different ways. External, embedded and inline. Each of which I will expand on later. CSS was initially released in December 1996 and has evolved through 4 levels, CSS 1, 2, 2.1 and 3. CSS gives web designers the ability to create rules and apply these rules to multiple different elements within a website. In the case of External CSS, this way of formatting being completely separate from the design means any change required by the client can be altered on the style sheet and will effect every instance within the site where the CSS is being used. I will expand more on the three types of CSS later in this presentation. CSS use can lead to faster page downloads [1] Most web browsers will load rules from the CSS once and then cache the data to use when each page is loaded. This means using CSS in websites can lead to lighter page loads [1], meaning as the browser is simply pulling information from the cache, the web pages will load much faster then without. This will therefore result in lower requirements from the server side. Since the majority of CSS is completely separate to the content of the website, making small, spread changes or troubleshooting any design problems becomes simple. It allows the designer to control every visual aspect of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Lady Fujitsubo accompanies Genji within the process of his psychological and physical development as the role of mother and sister; with her perfect talent and appearance plus the natural Oedipus complex, Genji developed a deep adoration toward her. As the very first women Genji had ever loved, Lady Fujitsubo was the one of eternity . • 47. What Is The Use Of Pathos In Columbine And In Cold Blood The literary nonfiction pieces Columbine, written by Dave Cullen, and In Cold Blood, written by Truman Capote, uniquely develop the stories of their killers through the use of rhetorical devices and careful presentation of information. Cullen frequently employs informal diction and teenage slang to connect the reader to the mindsets of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Additionally, Columbine features manipulation of syntax to emphasize significant information while presenting it in a simple and understated manner. On the other hand, Capote creates pathos while depicting Perry Smith s passive and sentimental nature to make the reader feel sympathetic. In American foreign policy, the dominant paradigms evolved. Whereas the Cold War notion of the centrality of powerful nation states had helped order the Bush administration s outlook before the attacks, the new paradigms explicitly accounted for the importance of non state actors and rogue regimes as the salient elements of American foreign policy.
