3.
4. His name is Spatule-tail Hummingbird.
He is also known by the name
Marvelous Hummingbird or Admirable
Hummingbird.
Due to its unique characteristics, it is
considered the most beautiful and rare
hummingbird in the world by many
experts.
WHAT IS HIS NAME?
5. WHO FIRST SAW HIM?
The Spatule-tail Hummingbird was
discovered by bird collector Andrew
Matthews in 1853. After that, it
remained almost unknown until 1960,
when Augusto Rushi acquired a
specimen for his aviary in Brazil, where
the first photograph of the animal was
taken.
6. WHAT DOES THE SPATULA-
TAIL HUMMINGBIRD LOOK
LIKE?
THE MALES
The most distinguishing feature is its striking tail. It has
four feathers: two are smaller and are straight and
immobile in the center, while the other two are longer
and have a wide tip that opens in the form of blue-
violet spatulas. In addition, this bird has an exuberant
plumage of bright colors between blue, green and
copper, with a beautiful violet crest. They can reach 10
to 15 centimeters in length and weigh between 40 and
70 grams.
7. The female lacks the two longer tail
feathers and the particular violet crest; it is
not as brightly colored as the male; and it is
9 to 10 centimeters long.
Likewise, the species itself is much sought
after by tourists, who seek to appreciate
the peculiar way in which it "floats" in the
air.

8. CURIOUS
FACT
The marvelous hummingbird is the
smallest animal in the world with a
backbone.
It has the largest brain, relative to
its body, of all bird species. And its
heart beats about 1,200 times per
minute.
9. WHERE DOES HE LIVE?
He lives in the north of the Peruvian
Amazon. It is an endemic bird of the
Utcubamba river basin. He lives between
2000 and 2900 meters above sea level. He
is usually seen in the district of Florida, near
the town of San Lucas de Pomacochas.

10. DID YOU KNOW
WHAT...?
The Spatule-tail Hummingbird was declared
Cultural Heritage of the Amazon Region on
May 6, 2005, with the approval of
Ordinance No. 96 by the Regional
Government of Peru. In order to protect its
species and propose the sustainable
development of the natural resources of the
region.
11. HOW DOES THIS
SPECIES WOO ITS
PARTNER?
The male initiates courtship by moving his two
tail feathers in an attempt to attract the female.
He then performs his peculiar dance, jumping
back and forth in the air on a branch, while
emitting a light snapping sound.
Before the seductive dance, the female falls
completely under his charms or, sometimes,
simply leaves.
12. The chicks are born
without feathers and
with closed eyes. After
2 or 3 days, they
appear covered by gray
feathers. And once they
reach the month of life
they are ready to fly.
EGGS AND
HATCHLINGS
Hummingbirds build their nest in low
shrubs, where the female lays her eggs.
Once hatched, the female comes and
goes, up to 140 times a day, in search of
food for her chicks.
As her young grow, the mother enlarges
the nest to give them more protection.
Finally, their chicks leave the nest when
they are completely independent.
These small birds lay
two very large eggs in
relation to their size.
They have an
incubation period of 15
to 21 days.
13. They feed mainly on the nectar of
flowers and plants. The fine shape of
their bill and their long tongue are
very useful for this task.
Likewise, they usually eat some
insects and small spiders that hidden
among the flowers.
WHAT DO THEY FEED ON?
14. WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT
TO THE ECOSYSTEM?
Many plants in the Amazon forest
appreciate the existence of
hummingbirds of this species as they act
as efficient pollinators when they visit
the flowers and collect their nectar.
Thus, the disappearance of this species
would have fatal consequences for the
flora of the areas they inhabit and would
increase deforestation, since the trees
would have no one to spread their seeds.
15. WHY IS IT IN DANGER
OF EXTINCTION?
Forest destruction and predation, which restricts
areas where the wonderful hummingbird can inhabit
Clandestine hunting, especially of males, who due to
their striking appearance are targeted by hunters
looking to sell the tail of the bird to fashion designers
and bird collectors.
Rituals, there are people who have the belief that
the heart of these beautiful birds is aphrodisiac, so it
is used in rituals and even as food.
The main causes of the worrying situation of this species
are:
16. HOW CAN WE CONTRIBUTE TO THE
PROTECTION OF YOUR SPECIES?
Today there are different associations such as American Bird
Conservancy and ECOAN that have initiated conservation programs
to protect the spatuletail hummingbird, such as Huembo Lodge, a
favorite place for the observation of this majestic bird.
However, the responsibility to preserve this and many other species
is not only of the organizations mentioned. It is also our
responsibility, we must be aware of the wonderful and important
diversity of species that inhabit our country, both flora and fauna,
and likewise, we must raise awareness of the people around us.
17. THANK YOU FOR COMING
TO THE END OF THIS
PRESENTATION.
GOODBYE.
