The Pursuit of Genetic Engineering Essay
The Pursuit of Genetic Engineering
Imagine a world where diabetes is effectively treated, where cancer has a cure, and where food is
altered for higher quality and increased production. This fantasy world is on the brink of becoming a
reality due to advances in genetic engineering and cloning. These medical innovations have the
potential to revolutionize our lives in numerous ways. However, the fear of controversy and the fear of
the new could hinder and possibly halt any progress that we are capable of making. There are concerns
that society should carefully consider. It is important, though, to thoroughly research and examine a
topic in order to understand why there should be no fear caused by cloning and genetic engineering ...

Basically, there are two ways to genetically engineer an organism. The genetic material in the
organism is altered, for example, by cutting some out. In other cases, genetic material is taken from
one organism and put into another after being genetically altered (Walker 1). Cloning, on the other
hand, is when an exact copy of something, for example, a cell, is made (Thro 107). Something in the
human body, like a cell, is extracted and then tricked into reproduction, and if the process is
successful, then an exact copy of the extracted cell is made (Fischer 57).
The processes for genetic engineering and cloning are similar but most certainly not the same. To
understand the processes it is necessary to understand the basics of genetics and how the human body
works. To put it simply, cells make up all organisms of life. Cells have many functions: they extract
chemicals from the environment to feed themselves, get rid of their waste, self replicate, and grow.
These complex functions are what make cells so unique. All cells are the same size, so the number of
cells that are present determines the size of the organism, not the size of the cells (Walker 4). A human
s cells are termed multi cellular because many different cells are needed to make up the human body.
Algae, on the other hand, are unicellular because there is only one type of cell needed to make up the
organism (Walker 5 6). Cells are comprised of genes.

Loneliness In Preludes
TS Eliot s poems, Preludes and The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock , present the idea of isolation as a
direct result of their character s struggles that they have experienced in their lives. In Preludes , the
author creates many unpleasant images to reveal that everybody, rich or poor, can be afflicted by
loneliness. The poor, who are only able to [curl] the papers from from [their] hair], have to suffer
every day and find ways just to get by in their lives, revealing the horrendous effects of poverty in
people s lives and the difficulty of battling it alone. On the other hand, the working class also
experience loneliness but in a different context. The muddy feet that press to early coffee stands are
the feet of the working

The Great Depression Of The Twentieth Century
The Twentieth Century is a time period that is fundamentally characterized as a century of revolutions,
advancements and tragedies. Women rights and race equality lead by Dr. Martin Luther Kind Jr. were
among the many revolutions that fought for human equality. Technological advancements such as the
first airplane, the first car, the introduction of motion pictures, Internet and cell phones advanced
communication methods and helped the labour force through reproductive methods. Along side the
marvels that emerged out of the twentieth Century, horror and fear presented change too. The great
depression, World War I, World War II, the Holocaust, the collapse of the Stock Market and Nazi take
over and their establishment of concentration camps negatively impacted the outcome of the twentieth
century and changing urban form. Among the horror that erected in this time period, the communist
movement is often forgotten. The change in political platforms, inspired by the Theory of
Communism by Karl Marx was theoretically perfect. However when ____ (number of countries that
used communism) adopted communism, its universal failure resulted in the misunderstanding and
contempt of human nature . Communism was well designed for military strength and intimidation ,
which explained the violence and fear that emerged out of this movement.

Lockheed Martin Executive Summary
In order to stay informed of changes in their industry Lockheed Martin studies all external factors that
may affect its company s long term strategic growth and development. Continual changes in the
economic, political, industry competition and legal / ecological environments pose complex
challenges to Lockheed Martin s business strategies. Economic Environment The Lockheed Martin
Corporation is the world s largest defense contractor with recorded revenue over 45 billion in 2013. It
saw an operating profit of 4.5 billion largely from US government contracts. Those contracts were
made to both the Defense department and non DOD agencies like NASA. Sales to foreign
governments (including foreign military sales funded by the US government) amounted to 17 % of net
sales, while 1% of the net sales were made to commercial and other customers. The company depends
heavily the on the US government (weakness) for its source of revenue. In 2013, approximately 82%
of the company s net sales were made to the US Government. Existing US government contracts are

Vasco Da Gama Summary
The author of this traveler account is Vasco da Gama himself. He was born about 1460 in Portugal and
was a famous navigator for the King of Portugal. Da Gama starts off his journal by describing his
voyage to the Bay of St. Helena in 1497, also describing himself as the Captain Major in third person.
Da Gama had anchored in the bay for eight days to clean their ships and took captive on of the natives,
feeding him and dressing him well, he was returned to land and that helped da Gama gain entry with
the other natives to their land. He describes the inhabitants as ...tawny colored. Their food is confined
to the flesh of seals, whales and gazelles, and the roots of herbs. They are dressed in skins, and wear
sheaths over their virile members. They are armed with poles of olive wood to which a horn, browned
in the fire, is attached. Their numerous dogs resemble those of Portugal, and bark like them. Da Gama
notices the similarity of dogs in St. Helena to those of his home country of Portugal, which I don t
think he expected to see. Vasco goes on to explain how he showed them merchandise that he brought
from Portugal and all the natives were amazed by it. The following night, da Gama is at supper and
then says that he hears shouting and sees one of his crew being chased by the natives across the beach
and quickly they depart from this bay, due to some miscommunication where the natives started to
attack them.
Many things interested da Gama and had led him to navigate all the

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R....
The first habit listed by Stephen R. Covey, is to be proactive. He breaks down the word to create a
simple reference, response able means understanding that you are accountable for your life. Your
behaviors are determined by you. Viktor Frankl was placed into a Jewish concentration camp during
WWII; he endured great misfortune during this period of his life. To cope with the experience he
envisioned himself simply watching the catastrophic torture he would endure in an out of body type of
experience. He discovered, between stimulus and response, man was free to choose, by this he meant
he could escape the torture by realizing that he was in control of his own behaviors, not in his physical
state but his mental state. By having control of himself he did not fall prey to reactive tendencies. The
referenced statement would be considered false; Covey believes that people are responsible for their
own actions and behaviors. To rebound the blame is merely what he refers to as a reactive person that
uses their physical environment to dismiss their own irresponsible behaviors. In doing this the person
essentially becomes part of the problem, instead of the solution. This statement would also fall into the
circle of concern as it refers to the actions of how others are impacting your life. This area is how
reactive individuals may choose to let people affect their life. Leadership and management as
explained by Covey are quite different. The meaning of leadership is the

Why the Gossip Girl Series Has Been Banned
Books have been challenged and banned ever since books have begun to be published. There are many

sex. Many books have been challenged and banned throughout history. One series has had every

she would be able to go to boarding school (von Ziegesar, 148). She wanted to go to boarding school
because the girl she idolizes, Serena van der Woodsen, went to boarding school once (von Ziegesar,

such as: sex, drugs, backstabbing, and offensive language. In one part of the book, an entire email,

who was writing poems about sex (von Ziegesar, 79 ). The characters Jenny and Nate were also

A Separate Peace Act 1 Scene 1 Analysis
The scene I have chosen is a bit more than midway through the book, page 180 exactly. I chose this
excerpt because I believe it is a true display of thematic ideas of manipulation and politics, with a
small touch on the theme of religion. This passage is all about Rasputin s political power through ties
to the royal family and his skill in manipulation. In this passage, Rasputin is attempting to instate a
friend, Alexander Protopopov, the Duma s vice president, as minister of interior. Of course he need to
get the tsar Nicholas II to approve this, so Rasputin started with asking the empress
Backtracking a bit, because preceding this excerpt, there were large amounts of political leapfrogging
in 1916, lots of events tied to the theme of politics. Ministers of different departments were fired, re
assigned, or hired for no reason, which left the minister of interior position open for Rasputin to secure
for Protopopov. Now Protopopov was a respectable nobleman, charming statesman, and veteran,

Only three months past and Nicholas had Protopopov made the new minister of interior. Once again,
Rasputin had his way. God bless your new choice of Protopopov, Alexandra exclaimed. Our Friend
says you have done a very wise act in naming him . This quote is obviously tied to the themes of
religion, politics AND manipulation. Rasputin manipulates Alexandra into believing what he does, and
into telling Nicholas II that by listening to her (thus Rasputin) choice in political figures, the tsar was
approved by God, an idea that Nicholas II could draw the conclusion that as long as he listens to his
wife(a.k.a. Gregory Rasputin) he will always be right by the Church. It s ironic that the author uses
rather sophisticated language due to that Rasputin, though he appears to be a flamboyant monk with
too much love for alcohol, is an intelligent, deceiving

Analysis of Consolation in Hades Bosom Poem
To begin with, this essay must summarize the poem s story written by the poet. At the very beginning,
the first stanza presents someone who has disappeared from this world. The second stanza tells us
about a woman who has lost something or someone really important, and how this affects her
emotional state. Later on, the poem goes deeper in the woman s feelings of desolation. In stanza five,
the poem explains the journey taken by the woman, in order to find the body of her loss, ending up
with the encounter to a witch. The next stanza clarifies that she has found Hades world and not a
witch, it describes the meeting and introduces the next stanza. Then, it is exposed what Hades told her,
stating that her son (only at this stanza, this is clearly stated) is death somewhere they both know.
Finally, the last stanza presents the resolution of the story, when the woman finds the dead body of her
son and also what she has been aiming for during the journey: relief.
Afterwards, this essay must analyze the poem in terms of form. 8 stanzas, all quatrains, except stanza
two and eight, which are quintets, compose it. Probably this distinction on extent is parallel to the
relevance of those stanzas within the composition. As we can notice in stanza number 2, the old
woman realizes her recent loss and it is the first emotion shown in the poem. On the other hand, the
last stanza is more clearly shown why it uses 5 lines instead of 4, and it also has relation with the
significance in the

Keyword Search Quieries
Ranking the query result is a key requirement for keyword search in order to rank and make appear
the most relevant results first. XML keyword search queries are different from HTML keyword search
queries in the way query results are ranked. Normally, documents are ranked by HTML search engines
(such as Google) based (partly) on their hyperlinked structure (Brin and Page, 1998; Kleinberg, 1999).
XML keyword search queries can return nested elements. Hence, ranking has to be computed at the
granularity of XML elements, as opposed to entire XML documents. Since the semantics of
containment links (relating parent and child elements) is very different from that of hyperlinks,
computation of rankings at the granularity of elements is complicated. As a result, ranking techniques
which are used for computation solely based on hyperlinks (Brin and Page, 1998; Kleinberg, 1999)
cannot directly be applied for nested XML elements. Some of the works on result rankings for XML
keyword query results include XRANK (Guo et al., 2003), XSEarch (Cohen et al., 2003), EASE (Li et
al., 2008) and XReal (Bao et al., 2010a).
The rest of the chapter is organized as follows. The related works based on tree data model and
digraph data model are reviewed in Section 2.2 and 2.3 respectively. Subsequently, the works done on
the result ranking are reviewed in Section 2.4. Also, other related works in XML keyword search are

The reforms pertaining to the monetary policies and the macroeconomic policies over the last few

Little Rock Nine Research Papers
The Little Rock Nine During the late 1950 s a group of nine African Americans enrolled into Little
Rock Central High School. They were persecuted immensly due to the color of their skin. This led to
many violent riots and changed the way America thought about segregation. Everyday they would be
beaten and ridiculed, because they wanted to learn in an all white school. It was shown that Caucasian
schools had better supplies and a better curriculum than the African American schools. Many violent
riots occured during this time period due to what was occuring with desegregation. Although many
residents in the Little Rock area were not okay with the desegregation, the nine high school students
overcame all odds and took a stand. What you may not know is that before this whole thing happened,
In 1954 the Supreme Court declared segregation uncontitutionalin the the Brown v. Board of
Education case. After this the court reitterated its ruling calling calling on school districts throghout
the United States to desegrigate their schools. Hesitantly some schools began to try to resist

Rules In Anthem By Ayn Rand
Beyond Anthem s Society s Rules, Controls, and Boundaries
In the critically acclaimed novel, Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, the main character, Equality 7 2521,
faces countless difficulties throughout the course of the book. In this dystopian society created by Ayn
Rand, there are numerous rules, controls, and boundaries that are set by leaders of Equality s
community to keep the peace in the city. These alleged rules are Equality s main conflict in the novel,
due to his vast curiosity. Each of these rules have a reason for existence and have a purpose in
Equality s society. At the end of the book, the society Equality dreams of building with Liberty would
not include these rules for several reasons. Some reasons include that Equality doesn t want We to

The fortune of my spirit is not to be blown into coins of brass and flung to the winds as alms for the
poor of the spirit. I guard my treasures: my thought, my will, my freedom. And the greatest of these is

Love never ends. In Anthem, Equality made love endure on. He created love in a society that had no

Option By Hanna Bloch Arguments Of Failtion
Hanna Blochs article Failure is an Option elucidates that failures are only failures if you can t analyze,
reassess, and learn from them. Bloch s first argument is that success meant to come after, so we must
fail in order to learn to appreciate success while still being alert that failure is imminent. Bloch quotes
Pete Athans, an experienced explorer who reached the world s highest peak seven times. He says,
Failure gives you a chance to refine your approach. You re taking risks more and more intelligently
(2). His own failures made him more aware of his own mistakes and allowed him to rethink his future
outcomes. Athens mishaps enabled him to anticipate possible obstacles and increased his likelihood of
success. Bloch goes on to talk about how society has changed its views on failure, her reasoning is,
Negative results can eventually give rise to positive outcomes (3). ... Show more content on

Bloch elaborates by quoting Nancy Koehn, a school professor who based a class study on a century
old failed exploration of Ernest Shackelton to teach her students about leadership. She says, It s a huge
failure from the perspective of exploration...But it s inspiring partly because it s a failure. We re in an
age of corporate malfeasance and companies being called to account and saying. It s not my fault. But
he said, By God, I m going to clean it up. He owned responsibility for the mess (4). Shackeltons
negative result ultimately lead him to success because if he wouldn t have taken responsibility for him
and his men then they would have perished, but because he refused to quit he successfully brought 27
of his men home safely. Hanna Bloch ends her article Failure is an Option by highlighting the key
themes of exploration which, according to her are,

The Importance Of Women s Rights And The Fight For Equality
Amelia Earhart once said, Women, like men, should try to do the impossible. And when they fail, their
failure should be a challenge to others (Earhart, n.d.). To me this statement means whether we are
women or men we shall forever challenge ourselves because when we fail, it should give us the
motivation to strive to accomplish more. For generations women have tried to be equal to men. From
generations before us, women were housewives and only housewives. They took care of their
children, men, and chores. However, there are now women in our military, there are some women are
business owners, chief executives, and much more. However, there is still more changes that need to
be made where women and men can be considered equal in all countries.
Women s rights and the fight for equality has come a long way in the United States. Decades before us
the Women s suffrage came into play (History, 2010). It was a way for women to stand up and protest
for their rights as a human because no matter If you re a man or a woman everyone should have equal
equality. However, it took awhile for the women to be heard, but when they did, they passed the law
for women to have the right to vote in 1920. Which is known as the 19th Amendment (History, 2010).
Considering the law that was being passed, over eight million women across the United States voted
for the very first time. Ever since then, women s right had continued to grow. Especially during World
War II, women s employment increased

In today s global economy, investors must rely on information provided by the various companies

Though the situation of fraud appears to be black and white, what is there to be said about the auditors
who do not detect the fraud committed by their clients? Where they incompetent in their audit of the
financial statements, or were they somehow involved in the fraudulent activities? A case that
demonstrates the consequences to auditors when fraud is found to have been perpetrated by a client is
that of Ernst Young and the lumber company, Sino Forest. Sino Forest is a Canadian Chinese timber
company that was listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange; before the fraud allegations, it was the most
valuable forestry company on the TSX. (The Canadian Press, CBC, 2012) However, it was accused of
fraudulently overstating its timber assets, supposedly located in China. Through its investigation, the
Ontario Securities Commission found that
Sino held undisclosed control over the network of third parties through which it conducted purchase
and sale transactions. In turn, these deals were backed by fraudulent contracts that were not drafted
until the quarter after they allegedly took place and revenue from them was recognized. (Koven, 2012)
In other words, Sino Forest did not inform the auditors, or the public, that they had control over their
third party suppliers and customers.

Marriage and Gender Roles Within Married Life
Marriage and Gender Roles Within Married Life
Marriage is one of the most sacred and intimate rituals or celebrations that exist in all religions. It is
often seen as an important and a defining step in your life. Traditionally, marriage is a ritual and
ceremony that celebrates the official joining of two people by law. This definition of marriage varies
from culture to culture since marriage can be viewed differently for them. The two religions of
Hinduism and Buddhism both allow marriages, but have many similarities and differences between
them in their wedding ceremonies, in the roles of husband and wife, and in their beliefs on divorce.
Wedding ceremonies are often seen as a big deal and is a cherished moment in the couple s
relationship. Many rituals and symbols are present in a wedding ceremony and are often unique to the
couple s religion or culture. In Hinduism, wedding ceremonies are a big deal and has many
components to create a very beautiful, and sacred ceremony. The ceremony often lasts for hours, days
and weeks since there are a number of ceremonies held prior to the wedding day. Some of the
ceremonies include the Misri (ring ceremony), the Mendhi Party, Raas Garba and the Ghari Puja.
Hindu weddings traditionally take place outside, in nature, under a canopy called the mandap. An
important symbol in the ceremony is to light a sacred fire which is placed under the mandap. The
sacred fire is lit to call Agni, the fire God, to bear witness to the wedding

My Experience Of My Birthdays
Do you ever have an experience that destroys something that you had cherished for so long? There
have been lots of times in my life that I have been confronted with situations that changed the way I
viewed myself and others, there is one distinct time that I remember abruptly changing my viewpoint,
and finally learning some very important messages. On the particular day, my birthday, I had one of
the most confusing, irritating, frustrating, eye opening days of my life. A day I will remember for as
long as I live. Birthdays were an event that I had been associated with excitement and anticipation in
the years prior to my 7th birthday, after that, they were ruined forever.
On this special day, I woke up to breakfast in bed, a family tradition. My mom had asked me earlier
that week what I wanted for my birthday breakfast and I had responded with the same breakfast that
everyone in my family asks for, cinnamon rolls. Skip ahead to the next morning, having just woken
up, being presented with a plate of pancakes... What? I was confused. I thought, There must be some
mistake. I looked around hoping to see another plate with warm gooey rolls of dough smothered in
sugar placed on it. To my dismay, there was not.

The Negative Effects Of Climate Change
Climate Change There s one issue that will define the contours of this century more dramatically than
any other, and that is the urgent threat of a changing climate. (Barack Obama). Climate change has
been a popular topic of discussion for years now, due to its crucial threat to our environment. The
world will forever be altered if climate change isn t taken into serious consideration and not in a good
way. Climate change is happening now and immediate action should be taken to stop it. The damage
to our earth cannot always be undone. Climate change has had many negative effects from damaging
coral reefs or the increase of wildfires, but most importantly rising sea levels. Rising sea levels are
caused by the melting of ice correspondingly with the rising temperature in the atmosphere. When the
ocean water rises land begins to vanish, Putting risk not only on the land, but on the people living
there. In the article Global Warming Impacts written by a group called Union of Concerned Scientist
writes Global warming is now accelerating the rate of sea level rise, increasing flooding risks to low
lying communities... . The people that this will affect are low lying communities such as the Marshall
Islands. The Marshall Islands are located near the equator in the pacific ocean and close to being sea
level. Since the temperature has warmed up steadily, some parts of this dilapidated island are being
engulfed by the ocean. Furthermore, this has caused concern in the

Reasons Why College Athletes Should Be Paid
I believe that college athletes should be paid for many reasons. One reason why they should get paid is
because they put themselves on the line. They also put on an incredible show for the people so that
means more money. The third explanation why these athletes should be paid is because they would
help begin a sense of financial awareness. Another statement of why they should get paid is because
this is the main way that colleges get money. The last and final explanation on why these athletes
should get paid is because they work harder than regular students. All these reasons are why they
should get paid. First of all, many of the athletes put themselves on the line and they put an incredible
show for the people so that means more money. A college athlete may get a scholarship to go to a
college to be able to play sports, but what would happen if they get hurt or cuty from a team. They
might lose their dream of becoming something big in life or they might not accomplish a dream they
wanted to be successful in. These athlete s career can end any second and they do it for the people.
According to Marc Edelman he states that Not only do they miss class, but they are absent for
nationally televised games that make a lot of money and receive millions of viewers . These means
that these athletes are missing their school time to make an entertaining event for millions of viewers.
These athletes are the main cause of why these people want to got to a certain

Kawaii Research Paper
Many Westerners perceive Japan as weird. While many aspects of its culture differ considerably from
that of the United States and Europe, it is this difference that while weird to some is fascinating and
even tantalizing to others. One of the most apparent of the cultural phenomena unique to Japan is the
idea of kawaii. Kawaii is a difficult term to translate into English, but the term celebrates sweet,
adorable, innocent, pure, simple, genuine, gentle, vulnerable, weak, and inexperienced social behavior
and physical appearances (Kinsella 220). The idea of kawaii appeared in the mid 1960s through the
1970s and initially started with Japanese school girls. Around that time, as indicated by advertisements
and articles from magazines, the desire for a youthful look evolved into a desire to emulate a cute,
child like look. Since then, the term kawaii deals mostly with the ... Show more content on

In investigating the history of kawaii, this theme of rebellion surfaces with the ideas of rejecting
traditionally Japanese culture in favor of more of a European or Western culture which was perceived
to be more fun. This in a large part includes the idea of cute handwriting that Japanese schoolgirls
would practice in the 1960s and 70s where the format read like Western writing left to right and
included English words and exclamation points. This was an experimentation by the youth in being
able to speak more freely and through this they expressed themselves more easily with a style of
writing that they felt more connected to as a result of their manipulations (Kinsella 224). The adults
and older generations did not share the same positive reaction to this cute handwriting as they felt it
was blatantly rebellious against Japanese traditions and cultural values they upheld

Jackie Robinson Hero
The world of baseball is a different place because of one brave man who fought for equality. Jack
Roosevelt Robinson is known as a hero to many people because of his bravery and courage to fight for
what s right. Because of his courage to fight for equal rights, the challenges he faced, and his legacy
and lasting impact on the world of baseball, Jackie Robinson is a very heroic figure.
Equal rights for baseball was a fight that Jackie fought. Accepting Rickey s offer to play with the
Royals at first, then the Dodgers, he was accepting the challenge to fight for equal rights. Branch

Many awards were given to him for his accomplishments. For example, he was the first to be awarded
rookie of the year for all of baseball, not just the National League. Therefore, the rookie of the year
award was named after Jackie in 1987. (Maddux Zito 482) This evidence suggests that what he did to
the world of baseball made a big enough impact to have an award named after him. Next, many
people were inspired by Jackie. His popularity grew with everyone. About half of the Major League
players were black by the 1970 s. Also, songs were written because of him, a comic book was made,
and a movie was created called Jackie Robinson. (Graf 3) This logically implies that Jackie became a
heroic figure and inspired everyone. Last of all, Robinson impacted so many people that he has his
own day celebrated by many. 42 is the number he wore. Today it has been retired so nobody else in the
Major Leagues can wear it except on Jackie Robinson Day. The man who helped change the course of
the game and more importunity, our country. was what Jackie was known as. (Graf 3,4) This example
demonstrates how he made a major impact on everyone off and on the baseball field. Because of

Also, my department should set and track goals to help minimize computational errors daily. In order
to help prevent adjustments from being duplicated, I would recommend that a database be created in
Microsoft Access in order to keep track of all adjustments that have been made. I also believe that
adjustments to customers IRA and CAP accounts can be processed in a timelier manner. There are
currently service level agreements to complete all requests within 1 2 business days. However, due to
a lack of policy enforcement and motivation, different operations areas firm wide are not following
these SLAs and many requests are not completed within 2 days. In order to reduce processing time, I
would recommend that managers set deadlines each day for requests to be completed. Any requests
received before that time must be completed the same day, if possible, and any requests received after
the cutoff time must be completed ASAP during the next business day. Managers can hold meetings
with their team members weekly in order to stress the importance of making timely adjustments to
clients accounts and ensure operations are still running smoothly. Reducing errors and mistakes is
important because it shows our internal customers that we care about them and their business

An Admirable Example Of The Modern State System
In the 16th and 17th centuries, many countries were on the verge of reformation. Many political,
economical, and religious changes were taking place. The age of the new Modern State, the idea that a
country and its inhabitants can be controlled successfully by one ruler, was on the rise. Before the
1600s, it was not rare for people to not associate themselves with an actual state; they simply were
ruled by a local lord or aristocrat. They did not have a sense of belonging or patriotism, and seldom
had concern for affairs outside their villages. As a country became a modern state, it brought people
together, formed new government policies, redefined and enforced the authority of the king, improved
the country itself with regards to new buildings, spreading of religion, and new opportunities. The
Modern State system sought to expand its power over material goods and territory, and sought full and
unwavering obedience to authority (Modern Rise Lecture 6). An admirable example of the use of the
Modern State system was the country of France. Alan James, author of The Origins of French
Absolutism, 1598 1661, argues that the French rulers had built up the power of this state by traditional
means. War, control over religious practices, and occasional use of violence only when necessary were
the ways he says they built the Modern French State up out of its old feudal ashes. The 17th century
was known as the Golden Age of French History (James 273). It population numbers

In the poem To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time , Herrick presents life as something that is
beautiful and should be taken advantage of. Herrick utilizes the imagery of nature to propose the
meaning of life and instructions to make it the best. Carpe Diem is an expression where one seizes the

Vincent Millay spring is conveyed as the opposite, death and a meaningless life. The natural imagery
that Millay applies to the poem is very dark and tense. On the surface the smell of the earth is good
(line 8), it is apparent that there is no death (line 9) in spring, but the truth is under ground are the
brains of men [,] eaten by maggots [,] life in itself is nothing (line 11 14). The image that is created in
this poem fluctuates as first we are presents with a lie, that spring is beautiful in its entirety. However,
Millay reveals the truth of spring by talking about its weaknesses. Although natural is related to
beauty, in this poem Millay utilizes the natural essence of the underground earth and maggots to create
a very horrific and intense profile of spring. In addition the plot twist surprises the reader not only
through the words but also by the sudden change in the visualization. This surprise quickly makes the
reader visualize spring as death, the underground and maggots , instead of the smell of the earth and
absence of death Millay appropriately utilize the imagery of nature to promote the theme of how
spring signifies death and a pointless life. Furthermore this signifies that image and existence of death
overwhelms the beauty that life

Women Are Not Born But Made
Women are not born but made. Nowadays we celebrate women s day but there are many situations we
had come through to this position and space Punjabi women occupy nowadays, and comparing it to
the times 60 years ago. The age of my grandmother. When the country had just got independence.
When the women are participating in nationalist movements were being pushed into the domestic
household works.
There have been innumerable debates about gender in (Banerjee 2012) Punjab over last 60 years.
Most of them were about women s positions in society, their education, health, economic status,
gender equality. What we can conclude from these discussions is that how women have always held a
certain contradictory position in our developing country in past years. In recent years women held a
very less respectful position . they were not treated as human. On other hand, Punjab has an increased
percentage of literacy among women . now women are allowed to enter into professional fields now.
However, in the 1950s my grandmother tells women were just made to do household chores. They
were not allowed to get higher education or even go out without the permission of parents. They were
supposed to be at home . while on the other hand the practices of female foeticide, poor health
conditions and lack of education persisting still continue. Even the supportive ideology of the home
being women s real domain and marriage being her ultimate destiny has not changed much in last 60
years.

The Fate of Women in The Birthmark Essay
The Fate of Women in The Birthmark
Wilson Sullivan in Nathaniel Hawthorne in New England Men of Letters states that Nathaniel
Hawthorne s tale, The Birthmark, depicts the efforts of a deranged scientist to obtain total perfection
in his wife by removal of a facial blemish. In this story the scientist operates on the superficial level of
the physical world, while the woman, the truly heroic woman, functions on the level of the heart and
soul, the more significant level. She it is who in her virtue provides for the reader an example to live

The wife s virtue leads her onward and upward; the husband s lack thereof and inability to appreciate
virtue in his Georgiana leads him downward and downward.
Even after Aylmer has persuaded a beautiful woman to become his wife, he is not capable of loving
her properly, unselfishly, because he had devoted himself, however, too unreservedly to scientific
studies ever to be weaned from them by any second passion. The narrator seeks to justify this error or
lack in Aylmer by explaining that it was not unusual for the love of science to rival the love of woman
in its depth and absorbing energy. Already at the outset of the tale, the reader perceives that Georgiana
is going to be shortchanged in this marriage. She is exposed to the problem initially when her husband
asks whether it never occurred to you that the mark upon your cheek might be removed? Aylmer is in
quest of physical perfection in his wife; unfortunately he discounts her inner, spiritual value so clearly

widely debated since the Consumer Leasing Act of 1976 amended TILA to include the provisions at

The Indian Lotus ( Nelumbo Nucifera ) Via The Floating...
Internal Investigation: Exploration Juan Garcia 11/17/15 Period 2 Problem/Question What is the effect
of varying pH solutions on the rate of photosynthesis on the Indian Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) via The
Floating Leaf Disc Assay? Background The Indian Lotus is an aquatic plant that is quite popular
among cultures as being sacred. It is often used to portray beauty as it grows from the mud unstained
and pure. It is also used today in many Asian foods. As such the growth of the Indian Lotus is one that
is very important to many cultures and societies. Knowledge of the optimum pH in which the Indian
Lotus grows can be significant due to how the pH of the environment the Indian Lotus grows in can
vary based upon pollution and other factors. Therefore in the event of high pollution, or any situation
that changes the pH of the environment botanists may be able to predict or decipher the effect of that
change on the growth of the plants in the area, specifically the Indian Lotus. The experiment can also
conclude the extent that pH affects Indian Lotus growth. It may conclude that varying pH has a slight
effect on Indian Lotus growth or even the ability to stop it from undergoing photosynthesis completely
and kill the organism. The experiment is important in general to find how pH can affect Indian Lotus
growth which can in turn affect other aspects such as the diet of locals or lead to even a decrease in
Indian Lotus which is culturally significant to cultures and religions.

Simon s Involuntary Trip to Paradise
Simon breathed deeply as he stood up from his kneeling position. He loved the relaxing feeling the
church gave him. He didn t tend to let people know how his religion affected him; his friends would
probably call him a sissy if he told them. They didn t understand how greatly this place affected him.
Not even he could explain it. Still, the glow of the alter candles at night, the cross that rested at the
front of the establishment, the stained glass windows that altered the morning light seemed to make
him long for the church every day. Simon, it s time to close up and leave, Simon s father told him.
Simon almost didn t want to leave. He could tell something bad was going to happen. He didn t know
how he knew; he just felt an uncomfortable twist in his stomach after he left the church every morning
and night. Yes father. Simon blew out the candles. Once they were extinguished he felt the pain. It was
worse this time; almost as bad as his epileptic episodes. They weren t on the same level, but they still
made him ignore everything around him. Simon s father called his name and snapped him out of his
pain driven daze. He rushed toward his father who was standing at the exit of the church. His father

of minutes spent on the commute to school each day for a ten day period. The commute is generally
between 20 and 30 minutes, though traffic problems, particularly accidents, can greatly increase the
time for the commute. Minutes Per Day Spent on Commuting EMBED Excel.Sheet.12 Part II Using
the data you have collected in above, please do the following: Calculate the mean, median, and mode.
The mean is the number many people refer to as the arithmetic average. It is the sum of the results
divided by the total number of data points collected. The mean is:
(23+23+27+22+19+30+32+23+24+47)/10 = 27 The median is the number in the middle of a
distribution, once that distribution has been placed in ascending or descending order. In ascending
order, the results are: 19, 22, 23, 23, 23, 24, 27, 30, 32, 47. Because 10 is an even number, the median
is the mean of the two middle numbers. The two middle numbers are 23 and 24. Therefore, the median
is 23.5. The mode is the number occurring most frequently in the distribution. The results are: 19, 22,
23, 23, 23, 24, 27, 30, 32, 47. Therefore, the mode is 23. Are these numbers higher or lower than you
would have expected? The numbers are what I expected. Which of these measures of central tendency

had some horrifying effects on both the political and economic scenarios of the entire northern Africa.
This revolution can be deemed a failure on multiple streams of thought ranging from economic to
political. To structurally analyze the extent of this man made failure lets logically sort out the key
events of the uprising. It all commemorated with a jury of self obsessed egotistic individuals who

Until here the riots were relatively peaceful. When riots started in Bahrain Saudi Arabia saw it their

surrounding countries but also on their governments. This only aggravated with the bombing of

It is important, though, to thoroughly research and examine a topic in order to understand why there should be no fear caused by cloning and genetic engineering ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Basically, there are two ways to genetically engineer an organism. The genetic material in the organism is altered, for example, by cutting some out. In other cases, genetic material is taken from one organism and put into another after being genetically altered (Walker 1). Cloning, on the other hand, is when an exact copy of something, for example, a cell, is made (Thro 107). Something in the human body, like a cell, is extracted and then tricked into reproduction, and if the process is successful, then an exact copy of the extracted cell is made (Fischer 57). The processes for genetic engineering and cloning are similar but most certainly not the same. To understand the processes it is necessary to understand the basics of genetics and how the human body works. To put it simply, cells make up all organisms of life. Cells have many functions: they extract chemicals from the environment to feed themselves, get rid of their waste, self replicate, and grow. These complex functions are what make cells so unique. All cells are the same size, so the number of cells that are present determines the size of the organism, not the size of the cells (Walker 4). A human s cells are termed multi cellular because many different cells are needed to make up the human body. Algae, on the other hand, are unicellular because there is only one type of cell needed to make up the organism (Walker 5 6). Cells are comprised of genes. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Da Gama starts off his journal by describing his voyage to the Bay of St. Helena in 1497, also describing himself as the Captain Major in third person. Da Gama had anchored in the bay for eight days to clean their ships and took captive on of the natives, feeding him and dressing him well, he was returned to land and that helped da Gama gain entry with the other natives to their land. He describes the inhabitants as ...tawny colored. Their food is confined to the flesh of seals, whales and gazelles, and the roots of herbs. They are dressed in skins, and wear sheaths over their virile members. They are armed with poles of olive wood to which a horn, browned in the fire, is attached. Their numerous dogs resemble those of Portugal, and bark like them. Da Gama notices the similarity of dogs in St. Helena to those of his home country of Portugal, which I don t think he expected to see. Vasco goes on to explain how he showed them merchandise that he brought from Portugal and all the natives were amazed by it. The following night, da Gama is at supper and then says that he hears shouting and sees one of his crew being chased by the natives across the beach and quickly they depart from this bay, due to some miscommunication where the natives started to attack them. • 7. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R.... The first habit listed by Stephen R. Covey, is to be proactive. He breaks down the word to create a simple reference, response able means understanding that you are accountable for your life. Your behaviors are determined by you. Viktor Frankl was placed into a Jewish concentration camp during WWII; he endured great misfortune during this period of his life. To cope with the experience he envisioned himself simply watching the catastrophic torture he would endure in an out of body type of experience. He discovered, between stimulus and response, man was free to choose, by this he meant he could escape the torture by realizing that he was in control of his own behaviors, not in his physical state but his mental state. By having control of himself he did not fall prey to reactive tendencies. The referenced statement would be considered false; Covey believes that people are responsible for their own actions and behaviors. To rebound the blame is merely what he refers to as a reactive person that uses their physical environment to dismiss their own irresponsible behaviors. In doing this the person essentially becomes part of the problem, instead of the solution. This statement would also fall into the circle of concern as it refers to the actions of how others are impacting your life. This area is how reactive individuals may choose to let people affect their life. Leadership and management as explained by Covey are quite different. The meaning of leadership is the ... I chose this excerpt because I believe it is a true display of thematic ideas of manipulation and politics, with a small touch on the theme of religion. This passage is all about Rasputin s political power through ties to the royal family and his skill in manipulation. • 10. Analysis of Consolation in Hades Bosom Poem To begin with, this essay must summarize the poem s story written by the poet. At the very beginning, the first stanza presents someone who has disappeared from this world. The second stanza tells us about a woman who has lost something or someone really important, and how this affects her emotional state. Later on, the poem goes deeper in the woman s feelings of desolation. In stanza five, the poem explains the journey taken by the woman, in order to find the body of her loss, ending up with the encounter to a witch. The next stanza clarifies that she has found Hades world and not a witch, it describes the meeting and introduces the next stanza. Then, it is exposed what Hades told her, stating that her son (only at this stanza, this is clearly stated) is death somewhere they both know. Finally, the last stanza presents the resolution of the story, when the woman finds the dead body of her son and also what she has been aiming for during the journey: relief. Afterwards, this essay must analyze the poem in terms of form. 8 stanzas, all quatrains, except stanza two and eight, which are quintets, compose it. Probably this distinction on extent is parallel to the relevance of those stanzas within the composition. As we can notice in stanza number 2, the old woman realizes her recent loss and it is the first emotion shown in the poem. On the other hand, the last stanza is more clearly shown why it uses 5 lines instead of 4, and it also has relation with the significance in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Keyword Search Quieries Ranking the query result is a key requirement for keyword search in order to rank and make appear the most relevant results first. XML keyword search queries are different from HTML keyword search queries in the way query results are ranked. Normally, documents are ranked by HTML search engines (such as Google) based (partly) on their hyperlinked structure (Brin and Page, 1998; Kleinberg, 1999). XML keyword search queries can return nested elements. Hence, ranking has to be computed at the granularity of XML elements, as opposed to entire XML documents. Since the semantics of containment links (relating parent and child elements) is very different from that of hyperlinks, computation of rankings at the granularity of elements is complicated. As a result, ranking techniques which are used for computation solely based on hyperlinks (Brin and Page, 1998; Kleinberg, 1999) cannot directly be applied for nested XML elements. Some of the works on result rankings for XML keyword query results include XRANK (Guo et al., 2003), XSEarch (Cohen et al., 2003), EASE (Li et al., 2008) and XReal (Bao et al., 2010a). You re taking risks more and more intelligently (2). His own failures made him more aware of his own mistakes and allowed him to rethink his future outcomes. And when they fail, their failure should be a challenge to others (Earhart, n.d.). To me this statement means whether we are women or men we shall forever challenge ourselves because when we fail, it should give us the motivation to strive to accomplish more. For generations women have tried to be equal to men. From generations before us, women were housewives and only housewives. They took care of their children, men, and chores. However, there are now women in our military, there are some women are business owners, chief executives, and much more. However, there is still more changes that need to be made where women and men can be considered equal in all countries. Women s rights and the fight for equality has come a long way in the United States. Decades before us the Women s suffrage came into play (History, 2010). It was a way for women to stand up and protest for their rights as a human because no matter If you re a man or a woman everyone should have equal equality. However, it took awhile for the women to be heard, but when they did, they passed the law for women to have the right to vote in 1920. Which is known as the 19th Amendment (History, 2010). • 24. Reasons Why College Athletes Should Be Paid I believe that college athletes should be paid for many reasons. One reason why they should get paid is because they put themselves on the line. They also put on an incredible show for the people so that means more money. The third explanation why these athletes should be paid is because they would help begin a sense of financial awareness. Another statement of why they should get paid is because this is the main way that colleges get money. The last and final explanation on why these athletes should get paid is because they work harder than regular students. All these reasons are why they should get paid. First of all, many of the athletes put themselves on the line and they put an incredible show for the people so that means more money. A college athlete may get a scholarship to go to a college to be able to play sports, but what would happen if they get hurt or cuty from a team. They might lose their dream of becoming something big in life or they might not accomplish a dream they wanted to be successful in. These athlete s career can end any second and they do it for the people. According to Marc Edelman he states that Not only do they miss class, but they are absent for nationally televised games that make a lot of money and receive millions of viewers . While many aspects of its culture differ considerably from that of the United States and Europe, it is this difference that while weird to some is fascinating and even tantalizing to others. One of the most apparent of the cultural phenomena unique to Japan is the idea of kawaii. Kawaii is a difficult term to translate into English, but the term celebrates sweet, adorable, innocent, pure, simple, genuine, gentle, vulnerable, weak, and inexperienced social behavior and physical appearances (Kinsella 220). The idea of kawaii appeared in the mid 1960s through the 1970s and initially started with Japanese school girls. Around that time, as indicated by advertisements and articles from magazines, the desire for a youthful look evolved into a desire to emulate a cute, child like look. This was an experimentation by the youth in being able to speak more freely and through this they expressed themselves more easily with a style of writing that they felt more connected to as a result of their manipulations (Kinsella 224). The adults and older generations did not share the same positive reaction to this cute handwriting as they felt it was blatantly rebellious against Japanese traditions and cultural values they upheld ... • 28. An Admirable Example Of The Modern State System In the 16th and 17th centuries, many countries were on the verge of reformation. Many political, economical, and religious changes were taking place. The age of the new Modern State, the idea that a country and its inhabitants can be controlled successfully by one ruler, was on the rise. Before the 1600s, it was not rare for people to not associate themselves with an actual state; they simply were ruled by a local lord or aristocrat. They did not have a sense of belonging or patriotism, and seldom had concern for affairs outside their villages. As a country became a modern state, it brought people together, formed new government policies, redefined and enforced the authority of the king, improved the country itself with regards to new buildings, spreading of religion, and new opportunities. The Modern State system sought to expand its power over material goods and territory, and sought full and unwavering obedience to authority (Modern Rise Lecture 6). An admirable example of the use of the Modern State system was the country of France. Alan James, author of The Origins of French Absolutism, 1598 1661, argues that the French rulers had built up the power of this state by traditional means. War, control over religious practices, and occasional use of violence only when necessary were the ways he says they built the Modern French State up out of its old feudal ashes. The 17th century was known as the Golden Age of French History (James 273). It population numbers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Internal Investigation: Exploration Juan Garcia 11/17/15 Period 2 Problem/Question What is the effect of varying pH solutions on the rate of photosynthesis on the Indian Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) via The Floating Leaf Disc Assay? Background The Indian Lotus is an aquatic plant that is quite popular among cultures as being sacred. It is often used to portray beauty as it grows from the mud unstained and pure. It is also used today in many Asian foods. As such the growth of the Indian Lotus is one that is very important to many cultures and societies. Knowledge of the optimum pH in which the Indian Lotus grows can be significant due to how the pH of the environment the Indian Lotus grows in can vary based upon pollution and other factors. Therefore in the event of high pollution, or any situation that changes the pH of the environment botanists may be able to predict or decipher the effect of that change on the growth of the plants in the area, specifically the Indian Lotus. The experiment can also conclude the extent that pH affects Indian Lotus growth. It may conclude that varying pH has a slight effect on Indian Lotus growth or even the ability to stop it from undergoing photosynthesis completely and kill the organism. The experiment is important in general to find how pH can affect Indian Lotus growth which can in turn affect other aspects such as the diet of locals or lead to even a decrease in Indian Lotus which is culturally significant to cultures and religions. ... The mean is the number many people refer to as the arithmetic average. It is the sum of the results divided by the total number of data points collected. The mean is: (23+23+27+22+19+30+32+23+24+47)/10 = 27 The median is the number in the middle of a distribution, once that distribution has been placed in ascending or descending order. In ascending order, the results are: 19, 22, 23, 23, 23, 24, 27, 30, 32, 47. Because 10 is an even number, the median is the mean of the two middle numbers. The two middle numbers are 23 and 24.
