know, and probably don't love them. But how do people who are living outside of the United States
or who are new to life in the United States view them? Jennifer Price has just the answer. In her

and organization to reveal her view of the American Population as superficial, materialistic, and
trivial.
Price begins her essay by explaining the flamingo's rapid appearance in United States culture and
the connotations behind the bird while using diction and cultural allusions to characterize United
States culture as trivial, superficial and materialistic. Price uses a low level of diction in paragraph
one through words like "pizzaz" and playful". Her informal diction demonstrates her view that
United States culture holds trivial things, like flamingo's, with too much importance. Price continues
on to describe the superficial value of the bird. The plastic flamingo is "inscribed...emphatically"
across United States lawns, its owners hoping to attach themselves to ideas of wealth. Those who
place flamingo's in their lawn are looking to benefit from the wealthy face value of the bird, they do

implicitly her idea and point of view on the topic on the United States culture. The idea is that the
U.S.A's culture is very overbearing, this is shown by her view on how Americans are so worried
with their image that is seen by society. Price uses many writing techniques to express her view on
United States culture, by the usage of diction, tone, and symbolism Price is able to convey her
analysis on the greed and the corruption occurring in the American culture.
Just examining the title the reader already understands that the author is going to be using an ironic
and sarcastic tone in her writing; "The Plastic Pink Flamingo : A Natural History." The flamingo is
plastic while "natural" may implied that is naturally made, while a plastic flamingo is actually man
made. The reader gets another taste of her sarcastic tone with the first two sentences of the essay;
"first, it was a flamingo". As if the italics weren't enough to notice her sarcastic tone on making such
an obvious comment, as if a pink flamingo could be anything but a flamingo. It is quite evident that

United States culture. As expected from the contrary words "plastic" and "natural" in just the title of
her essay, this passage is driven by irony. With that said, Price uses a satirical tone to criticize the
ignorance of American culture. Price begins her essay with a metaphor. She uses verbs related to the
flamingo such as "splashed" and "flocking," to explain how Americans "had made the bird

multi–tracking and tape looping, as well as mixing in1973. The engineer, Alan Parsons, use many
unusual techniques to help create the sound that we know and love. Which landed the album on the
charts for 750 weeks. Dark side of the moon was first lead engineering job Alan had with Pink
Floyd and only took a year to record.
To record this album an EMI console, a 16–track tape machine, a Fairchild limiters, and an EMT

The first song I will talk about is " Speak to Me" in the opening of the song there is a heartbeat this
was done with a heavy gated bass drum. Alan used Kepex noise gates, which were new technology
at the time. The band also thought it was a nice idea to have some speech throughout the record. So
they recorded people answering questions off a stack note cards. Then Alan placed the voices in

The next song I will talk about "Time". When recording this song many unique techniques were
used for the time. Alan suggested to the band the idea of using real clocks. He made stereo
recordings in an antique clock shop. Using a portable tape machine he record each clock one at a
time. Then he put them together on the multitrack tape by back–timeing the quarter inch originals

I think the clocks are a very important component to the song. It was surprising to me to find out
that it was Alan's suggestion. This just goes to show that the band trusted his creativity and

It is a pretty classic high school fight with teachers running out of their classrooms to intervene. I
don't think this scene does have a big modeling effect because unfortunately the kind of violence
nowadays has escalated to a whole different dimension. Long gone are the days where two kids
fought it out one–on–one with only their hands as weapons. Gangs, knives, bats, guns, or some other
kind of weapon play center stage in most of the altercations today. There is a level of underlying
aggression in this movie, almost like a pressure–cooker slowly building until someone blows. Steff
as the "bad guy" is aggressive in nature, verbally harassing anyone he deems below him or in
Andie's case, anyone who has the gall to say no to him. He is really setting the stage for Duckie's
(good guy) moment of aggression, when exasperated and fed up with the entire situation, he

In the past year, PRG received an average of $55,000, therefore we plan to match this amount in our
current proposal. Since PRG has recently developed their mission to provide direct services to a new
target group (women with reproductive cancers other than breast cancer), the need for services is
exponentially high. We believe this goal is feasible, considering that Pink Ribbon Girls has had a
95% success rate with grants.
Beneficiaries
Women from the "Simply Fight" and "No Age No Stage" programs at UC health who are battling
gynecological cancer will benefit from this project. According to previous PRG grant proposals,
$15,000 will serve 75–85 based on a family of four. The "Simply Fight" recipients receive three
meals per week for their entire family for two months, in addition to other services such as four
house cleanings and twenty rides to treatment. The "No Age No Stage" recipients receive a $3,000
stipend. These recipients will put the stipend towards the services they feel are the most important.

Summary Of The Pink Panther
Jeff Koons's Pink Panther is a piece of art that portrays an entertained, bare–breasted lady, attired in
a green dress. Her head tilts backward in a posture appearing as if she is talking to people around
her. She is modeled after the former Hollywood star, Jayne Mansfield. Additionally, the Pink
Panther, a famous cartoon character, calmly rests on the left shoulder of Mansfield while wearing a
hapless expression. Both figures were mass–market and pop culture knickknacks when the sculpture
was created. The work itself marked a crucial period of transformation in Koons's work and style.
His creations became brighter, bigger, and more startlingly cheerful. Koons surprised the public by
his brief realism and his resoluteness to depict the contemporary social and cultural situation. His
work could be understood as complex perspective on the present time. The image of the couple is
gratifyingly sophomoric. It depicts the lust for an object, which is accompanied by ingenuous
sentimentality. In general, the sculpture pinpoints everything Koons regards erroneous in the modern
American popular culture. Furthermore, the artwork portrays the way how people conduct
themselves in their daily activities and presents their common values and attitude to life. For

"Money" by Pink Floyd is a song written by Roger Waters and released in May of 1973 (Genius).
The primary focus of the song beyond the obvious (money) is the subtle commentary the singer
makes on the American capitalist system. At the time of its release, the post World War II Soviet
Union's economy was booming, and massive periods stagflation in America began to force citizens
to question the validity of the regulated brand of capitalism made popular in the decades following
Roosevelt's New Deal (Nielsen). The song appears at first glance and is accepted by most to be a
sardonic condemnation of the wealthiest members of society. However, a closer analysis reveals that
Waters' original intent was for the song to be taken literally; "Money" is undoudbetdly a praise of
capitalism. The broad message of the song and the nuanced linguistic choices contained therein
serve to simultaneously affirm a capitalist system and glorify wealth. Before beginning and for the
sake of clarity, vocalist David Gilmour will be the presumed speaker of the song and any references
to its content will attributed to him. Most important in analyzing the passage is the overall meaning
intended by the speaker, Gilmour, and the structure of the song is paramount in determining it. In the

be a shift here from the main political focus we saw before to a more general message about the
adversities that people in America face. The anger present dissipates quickly as the guitar slows the
mood again closing the song in the same melancholy tone it began with.

A Brief Look at Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd, an English psychedelic–rock band founded in 1965, was originally made up of
construction students Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright. They originally
started performing in London's underground scene in the late 60s, and under Syd Barrett's creative
leadership they released two charting singles and a successful debut album.
In December 1967, the group added David Gilmour as the band's fifth member following the mental
breakdown of Syd Barrett during their support of Jimi Hendrix during a tour of England. Eventually,
Syd Barrett was moved to a nonperforming role, only writing songs and nothing else. This stopped
when a mixture of Syd's unpredictable behavior at the time and idiosyncratic sense of humor
occurred and created a song that, initially, seeming like an ordinary Barrett tune. However, as the
others attempted to join in and learn the song, Barrett changed the melodies and structure, making it
impossible for the others to learn. The song was, fittingly enough, named "Have You Got It Yet?"
Barrett eventually totally left the band, leaving only 3 of the original members. After this, the band
released 8 other studio albums, and grew immensely popular thanks to Roger Waters' ideas.

In the book, Pink and Say, it starts off by talking about a boy who was shot in action when a black
man came and helped him escape some confederate soldiers. The boy didn't have much strength at
the time and only remembered being covered in limbs and mug to hide. All of a sudden he woke up
at the black man's house. This is when we found out that the boy's name was Sheldon, Say for short,
and the black man's name was Pinkus, Pink for short. Pink's mother doctored them both back to

1. Pretty in Pink and Some Kind of Wonderful are two films both written by John Hughes and
directed by Howard Deutch. They depict themes similar to that of The Breakfast Club. Central
themes such as class and popularity along with secondary themes of angst, love, self–discovery,
fitting in, and the need to connect with others are prevalent throughout both of these films. Pretty in
Pink is a prime example for the depiction of class and popularity. Its strong main characters, Andie
and Blane, contrast in both of these categories and they develop into deeper story lines as the movie
progresses. Class is a strong theme throughout the entire film and is presented in unforgettable
scenes. Everyone is nervous walking into their first big high school house party, but the look on
Andies face as her and Blane walk through the door is unforgettable. Clearly someone of a different

amongst the upper–class teens. No one can forget the iconic line, "Nice pearls. This isn't a dinner

The experience of breast cancer today is different of any other illness. 'Pink culture' and has shaped
the nature of breast cancer activism along with the experience of breast cancer for the rising number
of women diagnosed with the disease and can be seen in a variety of ways. First, looking at how
corporations have effectively drained and deflected meaningful activism through the 'pink–washing'
and commodification of breast cancer shows how easy it is to overlook the real issues with nice
packaging and presentation. Building on this culture, there are reinforced gendered expectations
regarding how women are expected to deal with the illness; disallowing expressions of suffering that
would typically be associated with a life–threatening disease. Finally, the way breast cancer activism
and the experience of the disease have been framed has created a detrimental survivor discourse,
which has done little to actually empower women with breast cancer. These phenomena, as seen in

Jennifer Price, in her essay "The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History," highlights the American
culture's ridiculous obsession with displaying wealth through her use of diction, tone, and
simile/metaphor. She depicts American culture as nonsensical, and thus ridiculous, because of its
disposal of normal standards or logic in order to fulfill its materialistic desires which is shown
through the popularity of the pink plastic flamingo in the 1950s.
Price's word choice emphasizes her feelings toward American culture. For example, Price's
nonchalant use of the phrase, "But no matter," (line 15) after describing how Americans had hunted

Thus, the only way American culture would integrate such a bird would be if it had a "claim to
boldness" (line 30) that gave it value, and it does. The flamingo is "synonymous with wealth and
pizzazz" (line 8) in American eyes, and Americans will adopt even the atypical flamingo to gain
affluence.
Price's use of similes/metaphors reveal her views on American culture. For instance, at the end of
her essay, Price compares the plastic flamingo to a real flamingo. However, instead of describing the
real flamingo as wading across a sea of water, she describes it as "wading across an inland sea of
grass." (line 61) This shows Americans clouding up the image of a real flamingo in order to suit
their own interests. Instead of having flamingos in water like they are meant to be, they make fake
flamingos to display on lawns in order to exhibit "leisure and extravagance." (line 19) Another
example would be when Price describes many flamingo based buildings such as motels, restaurants,
and lounges that sprang up all across the country in the 1950s. (line 26) She compares these
flamingo based buildings to "semiotic sprouts" (line 28) that just shout out "flamingo" in order to
take advantage of the flamingo trend. These buildings using the "namesake Flamingo" (line 27)
adopted this new trend and threw out the old in order to "stand out" (line 25) and draw in "riches."
