FINANCIAL RISK MANAGEMENT
Management of Financial Institutions and The Banking Crisis
Risk is uncertainty. The more risk one takes, the more he or she stands to lose or gain. One cannot
expect high returns without taking substantial risks.
The outcomes are thrown open to uncertainty. In general, when we talk about risk, we focus on
financial risk. In financial terms, it is the risk that a company or individual could lose some or all of
the original investment, possibly resulting in inadequate cash flow to meet financial obligations. All
wise investments follow risk consideration. To be successful, every investor must be able to identify
and understand the types of risk they face across their entire portfolio. ... Show more content on

It had been widely known that problems with the banks in the US were due to the phenomenon of sub
prime lending for housing. Many of the loans had turned into toxic assets as borrowers failed to meet
repayments.
Similar to Northern Rock, the banks continued to give loans in this manner as they too chose to
securitize their loans because this method of trading appeared so profitable. This was a highly
successful mechanism to operate until the number of defaulters increased to the point where these
assets began to turn illiquid. Investors started to avoid securities as it was now evident many were
flawed. Moreover, Northern Rock in their quest for greater financial returns found securities that
attractive they also invested in them.
With trading slowing in the financial markets, many institutions began to react to the impending crisis
by taking a more cautious approach to lending. In comparison Northern Rock were so focused on
returning profits and generating growth that, at a time when monetary policy was tightening faster
than expected, the bank had agreed to issue a tranche of mortgages at interest rates that were lower
than those it had to eventually pay in the markets to finance them (The Economist, 2007, Lessons of
the fall, 20/10/2007). In hindsight, this was a disastrous decision, which contributed to the impending
shortfall in cash and ultimately the need to be bailed out.
The managerial failings of Northern

Healthcare Coverage Is Not Affordable
Vibina Koruth
English 3
Mr. Tracy
6 March 2015
Junior Thesis Did you know that healthcare coverage is not affordable to everyone that lives in the
United States? For most people affordable healthcare is not exactly affordable anymore which has
eventually left them no alternative but to not carry health insurance coverage. Individuals that do not
carry health insurance coverage will open themselves up for massive health bills if they get sick, but at
this point those bills look more affordable than the cost of health insurance coverage. All the signs
point to the expensiveness of healthcare coverage and that most individuals cannot afford to get it
especially if their income revenue stream isn t very high. Mortgages, utility bills, possibly car
insurance, social security, loan payments and various other types of bills could leave most individuals,
depending on the financial situation, with not much money left to pay for the health insurance. The
absence of healthcare coverage in the United States exemplifies the financial hardships for families in
America.
One of the key aspects that lead to the financial hardships of Americans when it comes to healthcare
coverage is the expensiveness of the coverage. The expensiveness of the coverage can be attributed to
quite a few factors that directly and indirectly raise the cost. The number and type of technology used
in hospitals, clinics, and other medical institutions absolutely affect the rising cost in healthcare (Ferlie

No Stipend for College Athletes Essay examples
No Stipend for the Athletes
When people think of college they automatically connect it to football or basketball, because these
sports are a major part of any college s means of funding and advertising. Athletics in college over the
years has become increasingly big amongst the social media and people. Today you could turn on the
TV and almost always see a college football or basketball game playing. With the increasing interest
in these sports and their players, people are starting to question if the players should get compensation
for the hard work and publicity they bring to their college. While many may be in favor of college
athletes being paid, I am not. College athletes should not get any more money than they already have

They would also have to pay women s volleyball and softball as well. It doesn t matter if men s
football and basketball bring in the most revenue or not(Gaines, Cork). Also where would the money
come from? The University of Texas would not have any problem paying all their student athletes but
what about small colleges? Small colleges do not bring in the revenue that big colleges bring in and if
only big colleges could pay their player then that would lead into unfair recruitment and the colleges
that could pay would be able to get any player they wanted. Lastly these players do not need to get
paid in college, because college sports are meant to get the athletes ready for a professional career.
These athletes that play in college are getting a wide spectrum of exposure and experience. They
perform in a high profile environment, and gain access to incredible networks of people, says John
Rowady, president of sports marketing firm rEvolution (Riper, Tom Van). Take Johnny Manziel for
instance, he was playing on Texas A M and because of his success he was able to enter the 2014 NFL
draft with his teammate Mike Evans. Johnny Manziel is currently in the top 5 (Stankevitz, JJ).
Whatever these college athletes don t make playing in college, they can make up when they get into a
professional career. When Manziel is drafted he can earn up to $5 18 million dollars a year (Barnett,
Phillips). College athletes are not

Comparing Direct Democracy And Representative Democracy
There are two types of democracies, direct democracy and representative democracy. As one would
expect, the two are very similar. Direct democracy and representative democracy are both systems of
government in which power lies with the people whom are govern though the power of voting. The
power of voting is how both systems emphasis the importance of people s rights. There is also a
common sense of self empowerment to the people being govern in both types of government due to
this right. Furthermore, there is a mutual prominence towards majority rule in the two systems.
Despite their similarities, direct democracy and representative democracy have some important

Once we established our independence from Great Britain, the first priority was to outline the future
for America beginning with the Articles of Confederation. Due to the oppressive rule of Britain, the
Founding Fathers thought that an ideal federal government would be one with exceptionally limited
power. Therefore, under the Articles of Confederation, the states would remain independent and
sovereign, meaning the power was vested within the states. The federal government s purpose was
simply to be a last resort to resolve any disputes that occurred between states, and to preside over
international affairs, i.e. alliances and treaties. Additionally, the federal government maintained armed
forces, and was responsible for circulating currency. However, the federal government was incapable
of levying taxes and regulating commerce, issues that eventually required revisions, which led to the
Constitutional Convention in 1787. At the Constitutional Conventional, the delegates concurred that a
stronger central authority was necessary, enabling the federal government to have more power and
control. Was this a good idea? Not necessarily. The past has shown us many unfortunate instances that
did not have to happen, but had because of the federal government vying for powers belonging
rightfully to the states. That is why we believe that

Column Chromatography Lab Report
Two methods were utilized in order to purify and extract the pigmented compounds within MI 1 and
MI 2. These methods were column chromatography with a silica base gel and solid phase extraction
utilizing LC Diol and LC Si cartridges. These methods all revolve around trying to purify polar
compounds from nonpolar impurities and were chosen since prodigiosin is a polar compound
containing three pyrrole rings (6). Upon completion of techniques, two primary compounds were
extracted via column chromatography: a red pigmented compound, and a UV sensitive compound.
The UV sensitive compound was stored as it was not the focus of this study. The LC Diol cartridge
successful in extracting the red pigmented compound, while the LC Si cartridge would no elute the
compound. The red pigmented compounds extracted via column chromatography and LC Diol
cartridges were further separated and characterized via GC MS. The chromatograms are seen in
Figures 2 and 4 respectively. As seen by Tables 1 and 3, LC Diol purified MI 1 sample contained more
impurities than the sample purified by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The samples were put under different pH concentrations and the color change and absorbance was
observed. In basic conditions, the samples changed from pink to yellow. At acidic conditions, the
samples became a vibrant pink. This is seen in Figure 5 and 6. Additionally, the spectrums alluded to
an additional change within the samples. In acidic conditions, the sample absorbed highly near the UV
region at approximately 300 nm. This is seen in both samples at a pH of 4. This suggest that not only
is a color change occurring to change the maximum at 535 nm, but an additional compound is reactive
in acidic conditions. Additionally, the maximum seen in both MI 1 and MI 2 in acidic conditions
corresponds to literature about prodigiosin (5). This suggest that the unknown compound might be
prodigiosin due to the similar

Émile Durkheim Suicide Summary
Suicide by Émile Durkheim is well known text in sociology that is extensively taught to students
within the field. Suicide was published in 1897, the work is considered cutting edge both for showing
detailed research of suicide that revealed there can and is social causes to suicide. Based on Durkheim
s research he said that suicide can be caused by social factors, not just individual psychological ones.
Durkheim reasoned that being apart of society and integrated into groups in particular is a main factor.
The more involved in society and connected to others the less likely they are to commit suicide. As
this sense of belonging decreases suicide increases. Durkheim s theory is formulated by four types of

Alcatraz Prison As A Prison
Alcatraz was one of the toughest prisons to escape from with nearly no chance of success. Alcatraz is
22 acres of solid rock and cliffs that was once a military base but after many years as a military base it
was transformed into a prison. This landmark is now managed by the National Park services as it is
now a big tourist attraction for many. The guards that kept Alcatraz in tact were primarily retired
soldiers and police officers. Alcatraz was opened for only 29 years and during the 29 years it was open
there were 36 attempted escapes. Alcatraz was the most impenetrable prison in america at the time.
Alcatraz had set ground rules for the prisoners and if they were to break them there were going to be
consequences to follow their actions. The prisoners were permitted to play softball ,
bandball, volleyball, and bridge. The prisoners were once able to play horseshoes but prisoners would
take the horseshoes and beat each other with them. Alcatraz was known to have a lot of notorious
prisoners that were imprisoned there. Al capone was the most notorious prisoner there but was set free
after countless court hearings.
There were a total of 36 escape attempts during Alcatraz s 29 years of being open as a prison. James
Lucas and Rufus Franklin were the first to have a violent escape attempt as they killed a guard with a
hammer. They both were caught and given life sentences for killing a guard in their escape attempt.
There was many more escapes but the one before the most

Education Policies And The Greens
Social wellbeing is contingent upon equitable social policy addressing all varieties of demographics
and needs. One highly contested social policy issue in Aotearoa is that of tertiary education. Tertiary
education policies are proposed by multiple parties, however the most contentious of these can be
drawn from the Greens and ACT who hold highly opposing social wellbeing ideologies. Essentially, to
reveal binary oppositions between these policies, market and state ideologies must be considered, in
addition to the opposing views of individualism and collectivism which form the cornerstone of how
social wellbeing will be met. Moreover, the differences ACT and the Greens see in what tertiary
education should offer, ultimately reveal their opposing ideologies in policy, and their perspectives
towards social wellbeing. Act and the Greens both agree that Aotearoa as a country in the developed
world should face minimal social inequalities, however they hold vastly different opinions on how this
should be achieved. By comparing ACT who hold market beliefs to the Greens who hold state beliefs
it is increasingly evident that extreme beliefs drawn from either end of the political spectrum pose
significant problems in meeting social milestones. Market beliefs are often viewed as conservative and

The Fallen Hero Wake up, Riku, wake up. Who are you? Riku yawns while he slowly gets up. Wake
up, young hero, it is time for you to stand up to darkness once more. You have been in deep slumber in
this shrine for a hundred years. Walk out of the shrine to fulfill your destiny, said the mysterious voice.
After the voice stopped, Riku got out of the sleeping chamber he was in. He walked out of the shrine,
and the first thing he saw after a hundred years amazed him. The shrine he came out of was part of
cliff covered with fresh, earthy grass, swaying back and forth as the wind blows. Then, Riku started to
look around the area and below the cliff there was big green oak tree forest. The sky was clear, and the
sun gave the sky Far away, he could also see that there was a volcano covered by dark gray clouds.
Riku took a stroll down the path to the forest, and on the way he met an old man. The old man walked
towards him and he offered Riku to sit with him for a meal. Riku sat down, and the old man handed
him a grilled fish on a stick. Then, the old man started to talk to him. Young man, I haven t seen you

Although the industry is beneficial from a life cycle assessment point of view, over the years it has
gravitated toward countries with low labor costs, weak regulations on occupational safety, and limited
environmental enforcement. The global shift in the industry to countries with comparatively weaker
regulatory systems is of particular concern as ships contain many hazards that can have significant
detrimental effects on humans and the environment if not dealt with properly.
Currently, the global center of the ship breaking and recycling industry is located in South Asia,
specifically Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. These three countries account for 70 80 percent of the
international market for ship breaking of ocean going vessels, with China and Turkey accounting for
most of the rest. Only about 5 percent of the global volume of such vessels is scrapped outside these
five countries.
This study focuses on the SBRI in Bangladesh and Pakistan to get a better understanding of the
economics of the industry and the environmental impacts arising out of such activity and to explore
possible ways in which such environmental effects may be mitigated.

Licenses are signed for a different time periods. Licensing agreements are subject to negotiation and
they vary from company to company and from industry to industry. A major disadvantage of licensing
is the company s dependence on the local licensee to generate revenues and, thus, royalties, usually
paid as a percentage on sales volume only. Another disadvantage is the resulting uncertainty of
product quality.
Franchising Its a special form of licensing in which the franchiser makes a total marketing program
available, including the brand name, logo, products, and method of operation.
Many companies find it to their advantage to manufacture locally instead of supplying the particular
market with products made elsewhere. Numerous factors such as laws, political considerations, local
costs, tariifs and market size may affect a choice to manufacture locally, so it requires fair amount of
attention before making a final decision. The local production may be contract manufacturing,
assembly, or fully integrated

A Comparison Between Fitzgerald s Great Gatsby and...
Fitzgerald s Great Gatsby and Veblen s The Theory of the Leisure Class
The American Dream is real; Americans are able to rise out of poverty and into leisurely lifestyles
with a bit of luck and a lot of hard work. Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby and Thorstein Veblen s The
Theory of the Leisure Class both address issues of status and wealth that arise from peoples pursuits of
the American Dream. But the authors differ in their beliefs about the nature and motives of peoples
pursuits of wealth. To begin with, Fitzgerald disagrees with Veblen s notion of pecuniary emulation as
being intrinsic behavior (a goal in and of itself). He does this by conveying that Gatsby s flamboyant

Fitzgerald s explanation of peoples pursuits of wealth, however, attributes these pursuits not to an
internal need for contentment but to external, tangible goals. Gatsby throws extravagant parties in the
hopes that he ll be able to see Daisy and not for his own enjoyment or self respect . In fact, Fitzgerald
takes great pains to convey that Gatsby does not enjoy his parties Gatsby is often alone on the marble
steps or lamenting about [Daisy] not having a good time (p116). His conspicuous consumption is not
motivated by his need for invidious distinction but by an external, tangible goal he wants Daisy to
reenter his life and fall in love with him again. Fitzgerald echoes the ideas of Josiah Strong, who wrote
of pursuits in life that need to precede the self seeking (p164, Our Country) pursuit of money. While
Strong most values spiritual quickening (p165), Fitzgerald seems to value commitment to one s ideals
(requited love in Gatsby s case). Fitzgerald further disagrees with Veblen s belief that the desire for
invidious distinction is a pervasive trait that shapes [one s] scheme of life (p33) through a twist in the
Great Gatsby s plot. After Gatsby realizes that Daisy is not pleased by his parties or by his
extravagance, he

My Personal Favorite Communication Learning Goal Essay
Introduction
The second learning objective we have is Knowledge. Which is my personal favorite communication
learning goal. I feel like the majority of the classes i have had in the communication major has taught
me something about myself and the world around me. Knowledge means viewing our personal or
professional lives through its formalities, symbols, beliefs, assumptions and values.
Personal Experience
In 2011, I left high school flustered. I did not know were I was headed, I couldn t see in a sense I was
in complete darkness. I left St. Catherine s perplexed, because I had no clue what to do with my life. I
believe this was partially due to the classes that I took at St. Catherine s. I did not really have any
classes that I thought that stood out to me. However, I do think that in high school i did learn to be
open minded. We were always taught to ask why? And I think that it is because of this as to why I
decided to become a Communications major. If you took a look at my DARS my freshman year it
would inform you that I was a nursing major. At the time it seemed like a good idea to me because I
liked helping people. But as time passed, I came to the realization that the Nursing major was not for
me. At the time I had two friends who were Communications Majors one of them Samantha
Altamarano. Who is a close friend of mine, showed me a paper she was working on for Power and
Privilege which is taught by Damian Evans. I remember reading her paper and thinking

Rock N Roll Research Paper
Rock n roll is constantly changing and evolving into specific sub genres. Sub genres break down a
general genre of music into a more specific and sophisticated type of that category. For example, rock
has many different branches including soft rock, southern rock, and hard rock. Rock in general
typically has a lead electric guitar with a vigorous 4/4 beat produced by the drums. However, in the
sub genre of southern rock, a southern country rhythm is combined with a touch of rock and roll. Hard
rock separates itself by sustaining a loud, powerful, voluminous sound, whereas soft rock maintains a
slower and smoother rhythm while still possessing the rock tone. Each sub genre contributes their own
uniqueness while also preserving rock characteristics ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This sub genre originated in the southern United States from the inclusive rock genre. Southern rock
has a very strong lead beat that focuses mainly on vocals and the electric guitar. Just like country
music, southern rock tells a story and that is what makes the lyrics and vocals so important. Southern
rock is a lot like country music as a whole, but separates itself by being louder, adding a heavier beat,
and speeding up the song. Southern rock maintains a rock aspect by its amplified electric guitar lead
and continues to carry a solid beat. Southern rock started to develop in the mid 1960 s and began to hit
its peak in the 1970 s. The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Outlaws, The Marshall Tucker Band,
and ZZ Top were a few of the great early bands in southern rock. Southern rock is still a popular genre
including Kid Rock, Shakey Graves, Drive By Tuckers, and Blackberry Smoke. Atlanta Rhythm
Section, a very popular southern rock band, is known for one of their most popular songs, Homesick,
released in 1981. This song is categorized as southern rock due to its hard driven beat and the lead
electric guitar feature. This song begins with an electric solo that supports the classification of rock,
but then begins to add riffs to compliment the electric guitar solo with a touch of the south.
Throughout the song, the lyrics contribute to the anthem s southern side by

Essay on Globalization on New Companies and Small Buisness
When we look at international business today we can obviously notice that companies all around the
globe trying to expand their business as more as they can. When some company runs some business,
they are relatively weak at the start point. As firm passing trough the process of growing, they must

when new company starting with some business is surviving that first period of probably a year or

Polytheism And Polytheism In Hinduism And Abrahamic Religions
In today s times, the two most popular beliefs are either monotheism, believing in a single all powerful
divinity or God which entail Abrahamic religions like Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In much of the
world however, in many parts of Asia, polytheism or a belief in multiple divinities or Gods, has been
made popular for centuries. Atheists and the people of the western monotheists together talk badly
about polytheism and their beliefs as either being ignorant or pagan in their responses. Narrow minded
views and biases are what have hampered many others who adhere to the western thinking from
understanding the values and validity of what is polytheistic beliefs for the people that embody them.
In today s times, narrow mindedness is very prevalent and a major cause of all of the violence and
hatred in the world, both western monotheism and radical thinking have been major contributors to the
hatred in this world. In Hinduism, polytheism and monotheism both coexist in a relationship that is
very similar to parts on a wheel. The numerous gods/deities are characterized as the spokes, all of
which emanate from the hub cap and each of them playing an important role to work the wheel as a

Troop Deployment Should our troops be in the Middle East? Yesterday, Dec. 7, 1941 a date which will

On December 6th, 1941, over eighty percent of Americans believed that America should not be

that changed. After the attack, over eighty percent of Americans believed we needed to get involved
and strike back at Japan. Since that day, the United States military will always remain on a war
footing, a state of readiness, and the commitment to deploy anywhere in the world to protect American
citizens, our allies, and human rights against any enemies foreign or domestic. And since that day, the
United States of America has deployed millions of troops into troubled areas all around the world

there is a difference between true love and false love. These differences in the forms of love can be
seen through the ideas expressed in Pausanias speech, Eryximachus speech, and finally, Diotima s
speech which was expressed through Socrates speech. While the first two speech serve to portray that
there is a difference, Plato showcases his opinions through Diotima s speech. She defines true love as
the appreciation of the abstract idea of Beauty. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her argument is similar to theirs in the sense that they all establish a clear divide between different
types, or levels, of love. In Diotima s case, the false part of false love doesn t mean incorrect, but
means that it is the beginning stage that is on the path towards true love. Being on the lower parts of
the ladder would be expressing false love in this case, but this false love has the potential to turn into
true love. Using Diotima s speech and Socrates comments and recollection of their conversation
proves that Plato is in agreement with this perspective. Diotima was not present to recite her speech in
The Symposium, but her speech was recounted by Socrates. The fact that her speech was recounted in
this fashion shows Plato s agreement with her perspective, because he is known for including his
commentary and viewpoints through Socrates in his books. This is further proven in translator R.E.
Allen s comments about the Ladder of Love section when he states, It has been suggested that in the
opening words of this section, Plato intimates that what is to follow goes beyond the teaching of the
historical Socrates, that the revelation of the transcendental Form of Beauty is peculiarly Plato s own.
(78). This allows for Diotima s comments on love to be read as Plato s and it is highly likely that he is
contributing his own thoughts in his recollection of the conversation between Diotima and Socrates.
Plato also usually agrees with Socrates, and since Socrates uses his conversation with Diotima in his
speech, Plato agrees as well. Because he agrees with her perspective, he believes that there is a
difference between true and false love, based off the differences that Diotima noted in

Narrative Conventions
Short stories often develop a theme in a short time frame. Their authors must do this with limited
settings and characters. The short story Killer, written by Paula Goslings, contains many themes with
the main one being deception. One of the ways the author expresses this is through the narrative
convention of style or mood. In this piece the convention of plot is also utilised by the author to
develop this idea. Characterisation is another narrative convention successfully utilised to explore this
theme. By themselves these elements are nothing, but when together, they effectively portray the
theme of deception in the fantastic short story Killer.

One sentence which makes the plot so confusing is, No other self respecting cat would have put up
with that dammed budgie staring and screeching at him for another single day . A second sentence
which confuses the reader is, standing, staring and pointing at a scatter of green and blue . The plot of
this story is very intriguing and this is what keeps the reader attached to the story. They have to keep
reading, they just cannot stop.
The third and final narrative convention utilised by the author to express the theme of deception in this
piece, is characterisation. Without this crucial aspect the story would be lifeless. This is what gives
characters detail and personality. If the text didn t have this convention, it would only be a plot not a
story. In Killer there are not many characters, which gives the author a long time to describe them, not
just physically but emotionally as well. The main character is depicted as a person who is secretive
and suspicious; he does not want to bring any work home with him. The story is deceiving because the
leading character which is a cat, is given human traits. A sentence which shows this is, nobody knew
his business. He kept to his routine, was always well mannered when he met one of them on the street
. Another example is, he was an expert. He had a reputation downtown where a reputation counted . A
third sentence which

Disruptive Behavior Classroom
Disruptive behavior in the classroom
Over the years at work I have noticed that disruptive behavior of students is a big challenge and a
frequent problem that teachers have to address in their classrooms. For those who are involved in
education know that teachers on a daily basis have a high amount of demands like improve test
results, successfully teach to students with diverse needs, and raise ability to serve all students, often
with minimum resources and support. Consequences of several national Gallup polls evidently
document that both the general public and teachers be in agreement that a major dilemma for public
schools is lack of students discipline in classrooms (Elam, Rose, Gallup, 1996; Rose Gallup, 2003,

From a production perspective, we invested heavily in the early rounds in automation and building
capacity for the new products. In the early rounds, we also invested a lot in marketing to create as high
a customer awareness as possible. Due to this, our finance strategy was to fund these activities in R D,
production and marketing by taking loans (long term short term debts), in the initial rounds. At the
same time, we took care to implement all the steps to avoid emergency loans. In terms of sales and
marketing, we adapted our strategy based on how the products played in each segment. Our strategy
was to spend efficiently in marketing sales to keep the customer awareness and accessibility high for
the premium products, while maintaining a decent level of awareness and accessibility in other
segments. We also tried to keep the contribution margin well above 30%, but in later rounds when we
focused solely in the high end segment, we were forced to undercut prices and cutting our contribution
margin to sell off our products such as Buddy, Bold and Bead. Strengths: I think one of our strengths
was corrective learning. In terms of strategic decision making, we were able to learn from some of our
mistakes in the early rounds so that we ended up performing slightly better than how we started in
terms of net income, segmentation focus etc. which helped us

deterioration of physiologic function with age that limits the ability to function normally and makes it

The Tasman Glacier And Its Impact On The World
Introduction
The Tasman glacier is located in the heart of the Southern Alps, in the South Island of New Zealand.
Tasman Glacier is New Zealand s biggest glacier and therefore is an attraction. however, the Glacier
has been retreating due to a number of processes which are operating. The retreat is evident in the
years between 2000 2006, for example the Glacier had retreated at approximately 54 metres per year
(Robert C. Dykes, Brook, Winkler, 2010). The aim of this research was to gain an understanding as to
why and how the Tasman Glacier is retreating, in relation to the processes that are operating in the
environment. The use of a range of aerial images and the aid of a stereoscope helped to achieve the
aim, by allowing a close examination of the area, and giving a visual representation. Consequently,
this allowed for the natural landform features to be identified and provide evidence as to why and how
the Glacier is retreating. The importance of understanding the changing Glacier is paramount. This is
because constant retreat can affect the surrounding landscape, for example if the Tasman Glacier
continues to retreat it could lead to more ice melt will fill the Tasman Lake. Thus, resulting in a lake
rise. Therefore, if we understand how and why the glacier is changing, measures can be taken to help
prevent further, extreme retreat. Methods
To obtain results to be able to identify changes to the Tasman Glacier and process that may be causing

Emergency Department Journal
While working in the emergency department for my clinical this week I could see the staff members
that help in the emergency department. There are RNs, EMTs that have different certifications like
BLS or ALS, a nurse practitioner, and doctors. In the emergency department, they have staff members
from different parts of the hospital to assess the patients. Radiology comes down to get X rays on the
patients for a closer look at their heart. The patients who come into the ER with shortness of air, chest
pains, numbness in the extremities and dizziness with signs of fatigue are ordered an X ray. The lab
can come to draw the patient s blood or the nurse will draw up the patient s blood and then send it to

The ER has a variety of patients come through the department, but everything depends on the severity
of the condition to whom is seen first. Patients with chest pains will be seen first rather than a patient
with a stuffy nose. When the patient first walks into the facility they are greeted by the nurse at the
window. The nurse then will call them in and do an assessment which is the triage part of the ED.
Triage is the first person you see when you enter and the one who set you up in a room. Triage
assesses the severity of the patient and they decide along with the facility s policy who should be seen
first. When the patient has been assigned a room a nurse then will enter and assess the patient s
condition with a more focused assessment. The nurse then will hook the patient up to the blood

  • 2. Financial Risk Management JONATHAN MUROMBA 2012178104 FINANCIAL RISK MANAGEMENT Management of Financial Institutions and The Banking Crisis Risk is uncertainty. The more risk one takes, the more he or she stands to lose or gain. One cannot expect high returns without taking substantial risks. The outcomes are thrown open to uncertainty. In general, when we talk about risk, we focus on financial risk. In financial terms, it is the risk that a company or individual could lose some or all of the original investment, possibly resulting in inadequate cash flow to meet financial obligations. All wise investments follow risk consideration. To be successful, every investor must be able to identify and understand the types of risk they face across their entire portfolio. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It had been widely known that problems with the banks in the US were due to the phenomenon of sub prime lending for housing. Many of the loans had turned into toxic assets as borrowers failed to meet repayments. Similar to Northern Rock, the banks continued to give loans in this manner as they too chose to securitize their loans because this method of trading appeared so profitable. This was a highly successful mechanism to operate until the number of defaulters increased to the point where these assets began to turn illiquid. Investors started to avoid securities as it was now evident many were flawed. Moreover, Northern Rock in their quest for greater financial returns found securities that attractive they also invested in them. With trading slowing in the financial markets, many institutions began to react to the impending crisis by taking a more cautious approach to lending. In comparison Northern Rock were so focused on returning profits and generating growth that, at a time when monetary policy was tightening faster than expected, the bank had agreed to issue a tranche of mortgages at interest rates that were lower than those it had to eventually pay in the markets to finance them (The Economist, 2007, Lessons of the fall, 20/10/2007). In hindsight, this was a disastrous decision, which contributed to the impending shortfall in cash and ultimately the need to be bailed out. The managerial failings of Northern ... • 3. Healthcare Coverage Is Not Affordable Vibina Koruth English 3 Mr. Tracy 6 March 2015 Junior Thesis Did you know that healthcare coverage is not affordable to everyone that lives in the United States? For most people affordable healthcare is not exactly affordable anymore which has eventually left them no alternative but to not carry health insurance coverage. Individuals that do not carry health insurance coverage will open themselves up for massive health bills if they get sick, but at this point those bills look more affordable than the cost of health insurance coverage. All the signs point to the expensiveness of healthcare coverage and that most individuals cannot afford to get it especially if their income revenue stream isn t very high. Mortgages, utility bills, possibly car insurance, social security, loan payments and various other types of bills could leave most individuals, depending on the financial situation, with not much money left to pay for the health insurance. The absence of healthcare coverage in the United States exemplifies the financial hardships for families in America. One of the key aspects that lead to the financial hardships of Americans when it comes to healthcare coverage is the expensiveness of the coverage. The expensiveness of the coverage can be attributed to quite a few factors that directly and indirectly raise the cost. The number and type of technology used in hospitals, clinics, and other medical institutions absolutely affect the rising cost in healthcare (Ferlie ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. No Stipend for College Athletes Essay examples No Stipend for the Athletes When people think of college they automatically connect it to football or basketball, because these sports are a major part of any college s means of funding and advertising. Athletics in college over the years has become increasingly big amongst the social media and people. Today you could turn on the TV and almost always see a college football or basketball game playing. With the increasing interest in these sports and their players, people are starting to question if the players should get compensation for the hard work and publicity they bring to their college. While many may be in favor of college athletes being paid, I am not. College athletes should not get any more money than they already have through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They would also have to pay women s volleyball and softball as well. It doesn t matter if men s football and basketball bring in the most revenue or not(Gaines, Cork). Also where would the money come from? The University of Texas would not have any problem paying all their student athletes but what about small colleges? Small colleges do not bring in the revenue that big colleges bring in and if only big colleges could pay their player then that would lead into unfair recruitment and the colleges that could pay would be able to get any player they wanted. Lastly these players do not need to get paid in college, because college sports are meant to get the athletes ready for a professional career. These athletes that play in college are getting a wide spectrum of exposure and experience. They perform in a high profile environment, and gain access to incredible networks of people, says John Rowady, president of sports marketing firm rEvolution (Riper, Tom Van). Take Johnny Manziel for instance, he was playing on Texas A M and because of his success he was able to enter the 2014 NFL draft with his teammate Mike Evans. Johnny Manziel is currently in the top 5 (Stankevitz, JJ). Whatever these college athletes don t make playing in college, they can make up when they get into a professional career. When Manziel is drafted he can earn up to $5 18 million dollars a year (Barnett, Phillips). College athletes are not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Once we established our independence from Great Britain, the first priority was to outline the future for America beginning with the Articles of Confederation. Due to the oppressive rule of Britain, the Founding Fathers thought that an ideal federal government would be one with exceptionally limited power. Therefore, under the Articles of Confederation, the states would remain independent and sovereign, meaning the power was vested within the states. The federal government s purpose was simply to be a last resort to resolve any disputes that occurred between states, and to preside over international affairs, i.e. alliances and treaties. Additionally, the federal government maintained armed forces, and was responsible for circulating currency. However, the federal government was incapable of levying taxes and regulating commerce, issues that eventually required revisions, which led to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. At the Constitutional Conventional, the delegates concurred that a stronger central authority was necessary, enabling the federal government to have more power and control. Was this a good idea? Not necessarily. The past has shown us many unfortunate instances that did not have to happen, but had because of the federal government vying for powers belonging rightfully to the states. • 6. Column Chromatography Lab Report Two methods were utilized in order to purify and extract the pigmented compounds within MI 1 and MI 2. These methods were column chromatography with a silica base gel and solid phase extraction utilizing LC Diol and LC Si cartridges. These methods all revolve around trying to purify polar compounds from nonpolar impurities and were chosen since prodigiosin is a polar compound containing three pyrrole rings (6). Upon completion of techniques, two primary compounds were extracted via column chromatography: a red pigmented compound, and a UV sensitive compound. The UV sensitive compound was stored as it was not the focus of this study. The LC Diol cartridge successful in extracting the red pigmented compound, while the LC Si cartridge would no elute the compound. The red pigmented compounds extracted via column chromatography and LC Diol cartridges were further separated and characterized via GC MS. The chromatograms are seen in Figures 2 and 4 respectively. In acidic conditions, the sample absorbed highly near the UV region at approximately 300 nm. This is seen in both samples at a pH of 4. This suggest that not only is a color change occurring to change the maximum at 535 nm, but an additional compound is reactive in acidic conditions. • 11. Education Policies And The Greens Social wellbeing is contingent upon equitable social policy addressing all varieties of demographics and needs. One highly contested social policy issue in Aotearoa is that of tertiary education. Tertiary education policies are proposed by multiple parties, however the most contentious of these can be drawn from the Greens and ACT who hold highly opposing social wellbeing ideologies. Essentially, to reveal binary oppositions between these policies, market and state ideologies must be considered, in addition to the opposing views of individualism and collectivism which form the cornerstone of how social wellbeing will be met. Moreover, the differences ACT and the Greens see in what tertiary education should offer, ultimately reveal their opposing ideologies in policy, and their perspectives towards social wellbeing. Act and the Greens both agree that Aotearoa as a country in the developed world should face minimal social inequalities, however they hold vastly different opinions on how this should be achieved. By comparing ACT who hold market beliefs to the Greens who hold state beliefs it is increasingly evident that extreme beliefs drawn from either end of the political spectrum pose significant problems in meeting social milestones. The shrine he came out of was part of cliff covered with fresh, earthy grass, swaying back and forth as the wind blows. Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby and Thorstein Veblen s The Theory of the Leisure Class both address issues of status and wealth that arise from peoples pursuits of the American Dream. Fitzgerald s explanation of peoples pursuits of wealth, however, attributes these pursuits not to an internal need for contentment but to external, tangible goals. Gatsby throws extravagant parties in the hopes that he ll be able to see Daisy and not for his own enjoyment or self respect . In fact, Fitzgerald takes great pains to convey that Gatsby does not enjoy his parties Gatsby is often alone on the marble steps or lamenting about [Daisy] not having a good time (p116). His conspicuous consumption is not motivated by his need for invidious distinction but by an external, tangible goal he wants Daisy to reenter his life and fall in love with him again. Fitzgerald echoes the ideas of Josiah Strong, who wrote of pursuits in life that need to precede the self seeking (p164, Our Country) pursuit of money. While Strong most values spiritual quickening (p165), Fitzgerald seems to value commitment to one s ideals (requited love in Gatsby s case). I feel like the majority of the classes i have had in the communication major has taught me something about myself and the world around me. Knowledge means viewing our personal or professional lives through its formalities, symbols, beliefs, assumptions and values. Personal Experience In 2011, I left high school flustered. I did not know were I was headed, I couldn t see in a sense I was in complete darkness. I left St. Catherine s perplexed, because I had no clue what to do with my life. I believe this was partially due to the classes that I took at St. Catherine s. I did not really have any classes that I thought that stood out to me. However, I do think that in high school i did learn to be open minded. We were always taught to ask why? And I think that it is because of this as to why I decided to become a Communications major. If you took a look at my DARS my freshman year it would inform you that I was a nursing major. At the time it seemed like a good idea to me because I liked helping people. But as time passed, I came to the realization that the Nursing major was not for me. At the time I had two friends who were Communications Majors one of them Samantha Altamarano. Sub genres break down a general genre of music into a more specific and sophisticated type of that category. For example, rock has many different branches including soft rock, southern rock, and hard rock. Rock in general typically has a lead electric guitar with a vigorous 4/4 beat produced by the drums. However, in the sub genre of southern rock, a southern country rhythm is combined with a touch of rock and roll. Southern rock is a lot like country music as a whole, but separates itself by being louder, adding a heavier beat, and speeding up the song. Southern rock maintains a rock aspect by its amplified electric guitar lead and continues to carry a solid beat. Southern rock started to develop in the mid 1960 s and began to hit its peak in the 1970 s. The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Outlaws, The Marshall Tucker Band, and ZZ Top were a few of the great early bands in southern rock. Southern rock is still a popular genre including Kid Rock, Shakey Graves, Drive By Tuckers, and Blackberry Smoke. Atlanta Rhythm Section, a very popular southern rock band, is known for one of their most popular songs, Homesick, released in 1981. This song is categorized as southern rock due to its hard driven beat and the lead electric guitar feature. • 23. Diotima s Speech Analysis Through the speakers presented in the Symposium, Plato showcases a variety of viewpoints about the essence, worth, and expression of love. Though it can be argued that Plato suggests that love is determined by how an individual chooses to interpret it, I will be arguing that he supports the idea that there is a difference between true love and false love. These differences in the forms of love can be seen through the ideas expressed in Pausanias speech, Eryximachus speech, and finally, Diotima s speech which was expressed through Socrates speech. While the first two speech serve to portray that there is a difference, Plato showcases his opinions through Diotima s speech. She defines true love as the appreciation of the abstract idea of Beauty. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her argument is similar to theirs in the sense that they all establish a clear divide between different types, or levels, of love. In Diotima s case, the false part of false love doesn t mean incorrect, but means that it is the beginning stage that is on the path towards true love. Being on the lower parts of the ladder would be expressing false love in this case, but this false love has the potential to turn into true love. Using Diotima s speech and Socrates comments and recollection of their conversation proves that Plato is in agreement with this perspective. Diotima was not present to recite her speech in The Symposium, but her speech was recounted by Socrates. The fact that her speech was recounted in this fashion shows Plato s agreement with her perspective, because he is known for including his commentary and viewpoints through Socrates in his books. This is further proven in translator R.E. Allen s comments about the Ladder of Love section when he states, It has been suggested that in the opening words of this section, Plato intimates that what is to follow goes beyond the teaching of the historical Socrates, that the revelation of the transcendental Form of Beauty is peculiarly Plato s own. (78). This allows for Diotima s comments on love to be read as Plato s and it is highly likely that he is contributing his own thoughts in his recollection of the conversation between Diotima and Socrates. Plato also usually agrees with Socrates, and since Socrates uses his conversation with Diotima in his speech, Plato agrees as well. Because he agrees with her perspective, he believes that there is a difference between true and false love, based off the differences that Diotima noted in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Tasman Glacier is New Zealand s biggest glacier and therefore is an attraction. however, the Glacier has been retreating due to a number of processes which are operating. The retreat is evident in the years between 2000 2006, for example the Glacier had retreated at approximately 54 metres per year (Robert C. Dykes, Brook, Winkler, 2010). The aim of this research was to gain an understanding as to why and how the Tasman Glacier is retreating, in relation to the processes that are operating in the environment. The use of a range of aerial images and the aid of a stereoscope helped to achieve the aim, by allowing a close examination of the area, and giving a visual representation.
