2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2. My Personal Reasoning For Choosing Nursing
Becoming a nurse offers a great opportunity to improve the way an individual s thoughts process, by
converting from a creative thinker to a critical thinker. This facilitates the general care levels of people
and gives a positive atmosphere in the environment. In this essay I will explain and describe my
personal reasoning s for choosing nursing as a career; the skills, qualities and inspirations that I have
obtained throughout my life which have influenced me. Also describing the importance and benefits of
reflective practice for nurses, discussing how I will use it in my career as a nurse. Nursing, for me
specifically is the perfect career which suits what I would enjoy and last in as a lifetime occupation.
Influences through family and friends have given me a great idea of what nursing is like in hospitals
and age care facilities, I have been educated to constantly provide and offer others care and aid
towards the people around me. Providing this type of positive atmosphere delivers a constructive build
on my self motivation and self confidence, this is fulfilling and exciting to me. Another reason that has
motivated myself to pursue in the career of nursing is that it offers a perfect opportunity to make a
huge difference in other people s lives. Pleasing the people around me provides myself with
inspiration, giving a positive impact in their lives sustains my happiness. In the recent year and a half,

Is Science Our Enemy?
Science is not only an important role in the human culture, but also (science) helps people in
multifarious ways in today s world. However, people said that science will hurt human, and they set a
block on the scientific road. In the article Enemies of Promise wrote by the professor of microbiology
at University of California, San Francisco who named Bishop, Michael J. He mentions about even
though(although) science already helped people to solve problems, (but) there are many people still do
not support science. Moreover, the author of Cars and Their Enemies James Q. Wilson is a professor

In our real lives, the society usually improves through science. In the article Cars and Their Enemies
wrote by James Q. Wilson, he talks about how cars bring people conveniences and improve the
society. He also states that car makes people s lives freer and more pleasurable (Wilson ). As
everybody know, the United States is a country on wheels, especially in Southern California. Cars are
very important for a person who lives in the suburbs of Southern California, students need them to go
to school, ladies need it to go to the mall, and guys need it to go to gym. Otherwise, people will have
to limit the chooses of their house. Moreover, Wilson also mentions that people always love to choose
transportation based on individual instead of social preferences. In other words, cars provide
convenient living and option to people, and this is what science brings to people. We should support

4. Ethics, Morality, And Legality Of Hacking Essay
Addison Cryblskey
Mr. Bennett

7 September 2016
Ethics, Morality, and Legality of Hacking
Ethics are defined as moral principles, as of an individual. Giving dropped money back to a blind man
is an example of good ethics. I believe in having a strong sense of ethics. Morality or morals can be
defined as of, relating to, or concerned with the principles or rules of right conduct or the distinction
between right and wrong. I believe having a good moral sense is crucial to participate in the world.
Without one, you can make a lot of people angry, or you could get fired from a job. Legality or the
laws which govern us are rules we are forced to live by. They keep us in line and stop us from doing
unjust things. I believe in laws. Without them people who don t have strong morals, or who are
unethical, would be able to damage society.
The difference between Ethics, Morals, and Laws is slim. Morals make up ethics. Legality takes
ethical practices and tells you things you can t do based on what most people think of as right and
wrong.
Computer hacking can be both ethical and unethical. Ethical hacking is when something is hacked
legally and helps better the community. For example operating systems are usually hacked by their
creators to see what the vulnerabilities are, and then they are fixed or patched. The most serious issue
in the computer world (and in the presidential race) is unethical hacking. Unethical hacking is when
someone steals data for their own gain,

The Time of Change
You can t tax business. Business doesn t pay taxes. It collects taxes. by Ronald Reagan. This quote
really stands out because in this time period there are high taxes. Taxes were one of the big problems
in the progressive era. There were extremely high tariffs and the percentage was different in other
parts in the U.S. During the late 1800s and early 1900s there were reforms done Economically and
Socially . Economically, There were lots of Acts published by Woodrow Wilson talking about how the
consumers pay way too much for taxes. The Underwood Tariff Act of 1913 decreased the tax by ten
percent. Woodrow Wilson then enforces tariffs because he wanted to win the election and people liked
him because he was going to do something that the citizens would like. Socially, there were
progressives who didn t like how them and there peers were being treated because it was disgusting
and filled with filth. There air was polluted and there were diseases spreading every where.
Progressives paid and helped the citizens with their living conditions.
Socially, the U.S. in the 1890 1920s was a time for reform. Due to the slums, health, working wages
this motivated a man named Jacob Riis. He was a muckraker, that being said he would expose the
slums of New York City with horrible and disgusting photographs in newspapers and in meetings.

Rolling in the Street In May 2013, Major Bloomberg launched a new bicycle program to have an
additional mode of transportation for the citizens and visitors of New York City. The Department of
Transportation chose to have a Public Private Partnership with Alta Bicycle Share over a fully public
operated system in order to have an effective and faster delivery of the project. In addition, Citibank
paid $41 million and Master Card $6 million to be the title sponsors for the bike share program.
Although supporters of the bike sharing program are hopeful Citi Bike will reduce congestion and
boost public health by active transportation, in a big city like New York, only a selected part of the
population will be enjoying the benefits. This paper aims at addressing how public private
partnerships effectively increase the level of production and efficiency, but negatively affect other
important sectors of the economy. Presently, the key stakeholders are the government, the suppliers of
the bikes, the employees, the costumers and the community. Each of these groups contributes in some
way and has their own opinions, views and suggestions for the project. These stakeholders are crucial
for Citi Bike and therefore their interests must be recognized in order to facilitate the development of
the project. The Department of Transportation s (DOT) main interest is to provide safe, efficient and

8. What is Photography
Photography is seeing what is invisible, capturing the moments that last a lifetime. It can hold all the
mystery of the world in a single picture. It is a visual diary, containing the secrets of the earth. This
great pastime is used all around the world. The good, the bad, and the ugly makes up photography.
Anyone can enjoy photography including you. There are many different parts in photography such as
its history and equipment. There are many types of photography as well. Photography in today s
society is called the killer fine art. Photography was invented around the 1820s. It is now the most
growing hobby in the world. The first camera created is called the Camera Obscura. The Camera
Obscura was used during the 13th 14th centuries. It was a dark closed box shaped space with a hole on
one side. The Camera Obsurca got its name from the Latin word Dark Room . The man behind the
camera was Joseph Nicephore. Other important men in photography history include Alfred Stieglitz
(who changed photography into art) and Henri Carrtier Bresson (the father of photojournalism). The
next major camera movement was film cameras. These cameras came out in the early 1900s. This
movement gave the Granddaddy camera its name. The Granddaddy camera is also known as a 35 mm
(millimeter) point and shoot. There were many issues with film cameras. With a film camera, you
could not scan an image without it possibly getting destroyed. Also with a film camera the film had to

9. Tupac Shakur s The Rap Game
In 1998, Tupac Shakur released the song, Changes, directly dealing with the war on drugs, the
treatment of African Americans by police officers, and the struggles of living in the ghetto. Hip Hop
music in general tends to be very impactful towards the African American community. Tupac has
always stood out in the rap game because of his ability to be poetic and show feelings while being a
gangster rapper at the same time. Changes is one of Tupac Shakur s most famous songs. The rapper
compromises his more dominant bad boy gangster side to tackle African American social issues in this
song.
In the first few lines of the song Tupac writes, I m tired of bein poor and even worse I m black, my
stomach hurts, so I m lookin for a purse to snatch. These lines illustrate how a lot of black people in
America live in poverty and are not given as many opportunities to do good in society, so instead they
divert to committing crimes in order to just get by. This concept is repeated when he raps Give the
crack to the kids who the hell cares? One less hungry mouth on the welfare.
When Shakur states, Cops give a damn about a negro? Pull the trigger, kill a n*gga, he s a hero, he s
mentioning the controversial topic of how African Americans, more commonly African American
males, are targeted by the police and if a cop kills an African American male it s not a big deal. I

scandal, which showed that between 400 and 1,200 patients died as a result of poor care between
January 2005 and March 2009 at Stafford hospital, which shows that there was clearly a lack of
quality care being provided and that there was something that was not quite right occurring within the
trust. The NHS care regulator soon became aware of the fact that Stafford seemed to have unusually
high death rates over such a short period of time, which was obviously cause for concern. It is often
described as the worst care that the NHS has seen for many years, and became an issue of public
concern when it was turned into a full blown investigation. Within

Experiential advertising uses modern forms of communication and interactivity to approach marketing

Experiential marketing is a type of advertising that aims to get consumers to physically participate and

12. Postwar Essay
Postwar In the 1950 s the number of people living in the suburbs came to actually equal the number of
people living in cities. This wave of people was due mainly to the availability of affordable housing;
which allowed middle class Americans to move to an area previously inhabited only by the wealthy.
The houses and neighborhoods built in mass numbers on assembly lines came to look identical to each
other. As a result of this, a model American life was created. People all around the country began to
follow this model, and before they knew it a race to conform had begun. People no longer strove to be
different, neither by ethnicity nor religion; they strove to be the same. David Farber, the author of The

Prior to the 1950 s people of all different cultural backgrounds lived side by side in cities; the drastic
change damaged race relations forever. The gap between men and women also grew in the postwar
era. The men who returned from war were forever changed by the experiences they had there. This, as
David Farber explained, gave them something to differentiate themselves from their wives. The
women, who had held jobs while the men were away, were told to return to the home. This gave the
women something to resent the men for. The 1950 s were a difficult time for men and women due to
the large gap that had grown between them as a result of the war. The baby boom of the postwar era is
a real marvel to society for the simple reason that it has never happened before. Farber states that he is
not sure exactly why the baby boom occurred; however, he implies that there were many factors
leading to the occurrence of the phenomenon. During the 1950 s seventy percent of women were
married by the age of 24, and families were having an average of 3.8 children each. There are no
records of a baby boom after World War I, nor were there any records of a baby boom after any major
European wars. Therefore, the postwar baby boom was due to factors that had nothing to do with the
war directly. It was perhaps that America was in a state of extreme prosperity, people had money,
houses, back yards and appliances. They then felt it was a good time to settle down

South Africa is currently part of BRICS and CIVETS emerging markets, and none in Africa. In me

BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and CIVETS (Columbia, Indonesia, Vietnam,
Egypt, Turkey, and South Africa) are all examples of some of the emerging markets in the world.
BRICS are the world s largest emerging markets and CIVETS are the second largest emerging markets

emerging market is a term used to describe a country that is still developing. It is not yet developed
but it is neither underdeveloped, it is in between. These countries have some characteristics that would
classify them as developed, but they also have characteristics that would classify them as
underdeveloped (not to be confused with undeveloped ). Emerging markets are countries that offer a
wealth opportunity in trade, technology transfers and foreign direct investment; they are restructuring
their economies along market orientated lines. Leaders of these developing countries want to increase
the living quality of their people. Therefore they are rapidly industrializing and adopting a free market

Illnesses have long haunted the human race. As long as these illnesses have existed, humans have
developed ways to cure themselves, beginning with simple herbs and proceeding as far as vaccines
and complex medicines. One cure that long eluded scientists was that of the influenza virus. Now, the
influenza vaccine, or flu shot, saves thousands of lives a year and helps prevent serious complications
resulting from influenza infection.
At no time was a search for the cure for influenza more frantic than after the devastating effects of the
pandemic of 1918. The pandemic killed somewhere between twenty and a hundred million people,
making it twenty five times more deadly than the ordinary cough and sneeze flu. The symptoms of

The first attempt was a great success, but when they tried the same experiment again, the second pig
remained perfectly healthy. Even after repeating this experiment dozens of times, a pig never became
sick. While working with the yellow fever virus in his lab, Paul Lewis became infected with it and
died. Robert Shope, even though distressed at the loss of his mentor, continued the influenza research,
going back to the idea that the flu was caused by a virus. To act upon his theory, Shope filtered the
mucus from sick pigs through a filter that allows only viruses through. He administered the virus to
healthy pigs, but they did not become infected. Shope was beginning to believe that the cause of
influenza is what is known as multifactorial, when a disease has no single cause. He postulated that
perhaps the virus and the bacterium must work together to cause influenza. Professor Wilson Smith,
Sir Christopher Andrewes, and Sir P. P. Laidlaw were investigating a pandemic in England at the same
time as Shope was conducting his research. They began attempting to infect ferrets by giving them
filtered human mucus that contained influenza virus; the first experiment was a resounding success.
By collaborating together, these scientists learned that the cause of influenza was a virus. In the years
after Richard Shope made his discovery, scientists continued to research influenza. In 1936, these
scientists discovered that influenza can be grown in

The practice of torture by United States officials has become one of the most controversial elements of
military history. The debate of its use in gathering intelligence has been particularly prevalent since
the Bush administration. Most recently, a detailed and graphic scene of torture was presented in the
movie Zero Dark Thirty. Proponents for the use of torture state that it is necessary for intelligence
gathering and that ethics should be waved aside. Opponents argue that it is not becoming of American

forced policy makers and military officials to look at whether or not torture, particularly

It stated, With respect to waterboarding, the opinion concluded that while the technique presented a
substantial question under the statute, the authorized use of waterboarding...would not violate the
federal criminal prohibition against torture (U.S. Cong., 2009). This conclusion was primarily drawn
from the proposed idea that waterboarding is not considered to be painful and does not have a lasting
physical or psychological impact (U.S. Cong., 2009). This simulated session of drowning arguably
only causes a momentary state of distress. In fact, it is even practiced on U.S. service members in
training. These considerations certainly establish a compelling argument for the use of waterboarding
as a means to collect important information in a combat environment. There are, however, compelling
arguments against the use of any form of torture. One of the more prominent arguments is that it does
not provide officials with any actual intelligence. A former FBI interrogator, Ali Soufan, presents a
logical argument that waterboarding does not work. He explains that two terrorists, Abu Zubaydah and
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, were waterboarded 83 and 183 times respectively (Collins, 2014). It is
hard to imagine that anything beyond the first few attempts would have truly provided any form of
actionable intelligence. At this point in their torture, these two terrorists may only provide false
information that may seem important. In their eyes, this would provide the quickest

If we base our decisions on race or gender, we turn our back on the group that truly needs assistance:
the low income family. Race is present in every level of society, the lower class, the middle class, and
the upper class. Then why should middle and upper class minorities benefit today with special
privileges when they may have not been personally affected by discrimination? There are no policies
or procedures of affirmative action that prove an individual deserves special privileges. In theory, a
wealthy minority citizen would receive more advantages in society than an underprivileged or low
income white male. In this case, the underprivileged is in more need, but the determination of the
benefits is solely decided by ethnicity and not by proven hardship or financial need. The Center for
Equal Opportunity has expressed their disapproval of affirmative action specifically because it has
been an unnecessary benefit for wealthy minority business owners. The most disadvantaged group of
Americans are not blacks, Hispanics or women—they are the low income individuals who are
underprivileged.
In addition, affirmative action lowers the standards of excellence. The only quality that has value

19. How Did The Rise Of Islam Influence Western Europe
The rise of Islam brought many important changes to Europe, both physically and culturally. Through
the many conquests of Muhammad and his successors, Muslim dominion, by the middle of the eighth
century, included all of the southern and eastern Mediterranean, as well as Spain. Spain would serve as
a point of invasion for Islamic forces into Western Europe and it would continue to serve as an Islamic
state up until 1492 when its last territory (Granada) fell to Christian forces. Muslim control of the
regions south and east of the Mediterranean led to their domination of the Mediterranean sea and all
the European trade that went on there. All of this contributed to a deep mistrust of Islam from
Europeans, which would make way for the persecutions

The Effects of Alfred Hitchcock s Psycho in the Horror Film Genre
Alfred Hitchcock s Psycho is one of the foundational films in cinema, especially in the horror genre.
The film set new box office records around the world and received 4 OSCAR nominations. The movie
is characterized by plot simplicity, a small cast, new effects, and a handful of locations. In the plot,
Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) steals 40,000 dollars from her employer to spend it with her boyfriend and
ends up in an isolated motel where she meets the proprietor, Norman Bates, who ushers her in a
friendly way. The young woman is later brutally murdered without an explanation, turning the film
into a mystery. The subsequent events indicate that Norman has been hiding a most bizarre secret. A
secret that, at the time, no one watching the film would have guessed. Since its release in 1960, the
movie has had a significant influence on film making and audiences alike. Psycho changed the way
movies worked by owning up to the notion that rather than existing as a dream to be inhabited, movies
are a game to be played. This paper will demonstrate just how profoundly the movie Psycho has
affected the film industry.
Tactical Changes in Video Production

Lawrence often refers to them as those names throughout his study and never puts a North or South

surrounding territories on page 12, a reader could be lost on who is who by this point in the book.
Another point that readers could get mildly confused on is when Lawrence refers to Vietnam as
different names. For example, over time, they hoped, aggressive search and destroy operations would
inflict casualties more quickly than North Vietnam and the NLF could replace their losses, thus
forcing the communists to seek peace on American terms, (Lawrence, 102). Lawrence never explained
the NLF, National Liberation Front, and what it means or whom it represents. Lawrence also used
Vietcong regularly throughout his study. For instance, Vietcong, a contraction of the term for
Vietnamese communist, Lawrence does not really explain why he calls it Vietcong throughout the
book (Lawrence, 65). Lawrence could have explained whom this term was more directly used for or
why it was used to explain these people. Lawrence s study reveals a lot about the Vietnam War and the
role of the United States in Southeast Asia from 1954 to 1975, including the Second Indochina War

Why can t somebody do something about it?
As a child in the Philippines, where access to medicine was unattainable due to a shortage of

There were no hospitals or clinics in her town so she bravely traveled 450 miles by herself to the

I decided to move to the US by myself when I was 17 so I can receive the best education in a place

they now have competitive production costs ( Why 1). Lastly, Mexico has also strengthened their

Census Bureau, ACS 2015). In 2010, it was reported that 64.5%, or 2, 195 people, of the population of
Astoria relied on public transportation. This dependence on the MTA increased in 2015 as 76.2% of
the total population reported that they used public transportation as their main mean of transportation
to work (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2015). This shows that people from these areas spend more time
travelling than the average commute time reported. Such information is crucial as it allows people to
see the importance of public transportation to different populations, but more specifically, to those in

26. Bomb Calorimeter Experiment
Discussion:
As can be seen in graph 1 that is above, the results in the graph indicates that the practical was
inaccurate. This is because that there was a great amount difference between the true nutritional value
of the three foods in the practical, then the actual calculated energy value from all the class results.
The energy in the true nutritional value on each of the food packets were in the thousands per 100g
compared to the class energy, as they were in the hundreds.
Accuracy:
From all the analysation of results for the three foods that was tested in the practical, it was easy to say
that the results were not accurate. As seen in the graph 1 above, the true value for popcorn is 1910kJ,
cheese and bacon is 2270kJ and macadamia is 3040kJ. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bomb calorimeter is a device that measures the amount of heat that flows in a chemical reaction. How
the bomb calorimeter works is that the food space gets filled with oxygen, the water space fascinates
the heat released by the food, then the thermometer measures the water temperature as it gets
increased and the ignition wire burns the food inside the bomb calorimeter. The bomb calorimeter
prevents heat loss because of the air space and the insulating jacket (McGraw Hill, 2016). By using a
bomb calorimeter the errors of heat loss would not have occurred because a bomb calorimeter reduces
all errors like systematic and random.

Conclusion:
The prediction which was believed that the class average energy for popcorn, cheese and bacon balls
and macadamia will not match the true nutritional value which proved to be true and was supported.
Analysing all the systematic and random errors that occurred in this practical, it shows that it made a
huge difference in the final results between the class average and the true value. So that makes this
practical inaccurate and completely unreliable proves the prediction correct.

character traits foreshadow the decisions he would make years later in the Persian Wars.
Comparatively, his impulsiveness matured into a cunning and uncontrollable determination in the face

30. Analysis Of Joe Hill s Preacher Of The Slave
Preacher Casey s new purpose mirrors a historical idol from the same time period, Joe Hill. Joe Hill
was a leader of the IWW during the 1900s. Like Casey, Hill believed in striking against businesses
and led his own strikes including the Lawrence strike in 1912 and Paterson strike in 1913. Joe Hill
used songs to communicate his ideas including the preacher of the slave . In the song, Hill shows
preachers as corrupted and argues against the existence of heaven, convincing his audience that they
should focus on improving conditions they face today instead of looking for heaven for relief.
Similarly, Casey said, I wouldn t pray just for a old man that s dead, cause he s all right. If I was to
pray, I d pray for folks that s alive and don t know which way to turn , mirroring Hill s views that the
union must focus on the current conditions that mankind faces instead of looking towards death for
hope. Casey is connected to the song in a metaphorical way as he too became an advocate of justice
for workers thus becoming a metaphorical preacher of the slave in a positive way, unlike the negative
light Hill shined religious preachers in. Additionally, both of these men argued for justice, equality,
and socialism over religion. Furthermore, Joe Hill was arrested for a crime he did not commit and was
executed by the state of Utah. Similarly, Casey is caught conspiring and was beaten to death by
Pinkerton guards who acted as the police force at the time. Hill and Casey both became martyrs of
their causes, Hill inspiring the followers of the IWW and Casey inspiring his own followers, causing
the transformation of Tom Joad. In the beginning, Tom Joad s focus is the survival of himself and his
family. Tom returns from penitentiary wanting to reconnect with his family while on parole. Once
Tom is reunited with his family his focus is protecting his family. Although he does not feel as lost as
Casey, Tom too is searching for a purpose. Early on, Tom expresses some discontent with the

The objective of my experiment is to identify the relationship between the definite boiling points of
distilled water, and water that has been mixed with our everyday table salt. In this experiment, the
Independent Variable will be the amount of salt I have added to the constant( our water), and the
Dependent Variable will be the boiling temperature that it reaches.
Introduction:
According to the Department of Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, adding
salt to water increases the overall boiling point, thus reducing cooking time. It s important to know
that it does not actually speed up the boiling point, but increases the maximum temperature. To prove
this concept, we will be investigating How [does] the increase in salt (IDV) affect the boiling
temperature of water (DV)? .
Research Question:
How does the increase in salt (IDV) affect the boiling temperature of water (DV)?

The Discourse acts as a forum for the exploration of the political pathways that Japan could follow

He poses a rhetoric question to the Gentleman, If anyone says that quarrelling is a vice and war an
absurdity, le me ask him to consider this: What can be done about the fact that individuals actually
possess vices? What can be done about the fact that they act absurdly? In short, what can be done
about reality? (Pg. 94). In short, he postulates that wars exist in the real world. And because of wars,
there was a need for armies. In addition, in an international scene where military was used as a basis

35. C. Wright Mills s The Power Elite
Certain changes, which defy many of the fondest beliefs, have taken place in the American society.
People have retransformed from an independent thinking public into a mass society manipulated by
commanders of unequaled powers. Sociologist C. Wright Mills carefully documented this
phenomenon in his book entitled The Power Elite , opening the debate with a meaningful sentence:
The powers of ordinary men are circumscribed by the everyday worlds in which they live, yet even in
these rounds of job, family and neighborhood they often seem driven by forces they can neither
understand nor govern .
What does Power Elite mean?
The Power Elite is a critical study of the American power structure, in which Mills argued that a single
elite (the ruler) decides for the nation as a whole, leaving minor decisions for the middle level person
to handle and almost nothing for the common ones (the ruled). His theory suggests that power in the
U.S. is concentrated in the hand of a close knit group whose member s observations is conducted
around 1960.

36. Windows And Windows Operating System
Windows has become a household name. The company logo is familiar to almost everyone across the
world. This revolutionary company has played a major role in the current technology explosion.
Windows was one of the first affordable operating systems that enabled computers to be more widely
available. Many changes and updates have been made to the Windows operating system to keep
Microsoft at the top of its market.
The history of Windows dates back to 1975 when Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded a partnership
called Microsoft. They had a monumental vision that there would be a computer on every desktop and
in every home (Microsoft, Era 0, para 2). Microsoft rewrote a previously purchased operating system
to support subdirectories and hard disks naming it MS DOS (Software Gems, para 3 5). This is short
for Microsoft Disk Operating System. MS DOS was an effective foundation that ran the personal
computer. However, it was difficult for users to master. Specific commands required memorization.
To combat the frustration caused by MS DOS, Microsoft released Windows 1.0 in 1983. Windows 1.0
was introduced as unique software designed for the serious PC user (Microsoft, Era 1, para 2) by Bill
Gates. Windows 1.0 enabled users to maneuver a mouse to point and click versus typing in difficult to

technology. The low price is what really made Windows 1.0 stand out from the

37. The Importance Of Internet Censorship In China
We have all been on our usual search engine and clicked on the random news articles. Whether it be
Kim Kardashian s holiday or the controversy between Donald Trump and the Russian president. We
are free to roam the internet here in Australia without the thought of someone stalking our searches.
However, some countries strictly limit the information the public is exposed to. Specifically, China s
internet relies on censoring content to protect the public from cybercrimes and preventing the leakage
of information about the country. But is censorship in China implemented to do harm to its society, or
purely to protect it? What is the extent of China s internet censorship that is actually necessary for
societal protection?
What is censorship in China?
Censorship is a way to control the information the public in China is able to see. Web chats, search
engines and social media platforms are the main aspects censored on the Chinese internet.
Controversial and belittling content are sought out by human and technical censors to be removed.
The Great Firewall is the main technical way the Chinese government is able to censor various aspects
of the internet and was initiated by China s Ministry of Public Security. Social media platforms such
as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are censored as one can search up, for example, how to overthrow
the government, as stated by Jason Q. Ing, a researcher who delves deep into the Chinese internet to

materials by people across different generations. His theological perspectives stressed the influences
created by Aristotle. According to Aquinas, religion and faith remain intertwined in the logic. Thomas
Aquinas believed that faith and reason are the same. Therefore, his concept of the Bible and the
Church differ from other scholars who stressed the significance of religion. The voice of reason has
been echoed from one generation of philosophers to the other. Several religious figures considered the
concepts shared by Aquinas from an extremist point of view. They believed that Aquinas like Aristotle
diverted people from religious aspects by focusing on faith solely. Aquinas work, the Summa
Theologica is the basis of the discussion. The Summa Theologica establishes that Christianity is a
religion yet faith is an element that people should address from an enlightened point of view. The five
volume document establishes that reason or logic often inform the actions of certain Christians. Since
philosophy concerns inquisitiveness, people should not be afraid to question the things they doubt
about religion . From Aquinas point of view, people should always listen to the opposing point of view
when talking about Christianity. The philosopher established that one of the things he questions about
Christianity is the concept of I answer. In essence, an authoritative figure

have to obtain a warrant of search before accessing the information stored in the devices.
The Fifth Amendment prohibits the forensic investigator from forcing the suspect to provide any

the time I had understood the importance of ensuring the necessary funds before moving forward with

idea that became Teach for America.

44. How The Writing Composed Within Academic Settings Can Best...
The writing composed in academic settings can best be described as demonstrate what we have
learned. Writing to review topics about learning new ideas, to present a case and illustrate to our
professors what we have learned, we can think critically and apply it.
The writing submitted to professors gives them an impression of the way our practical mind works
when confronted with a significant topic in a distinct field of study. Instructors want to see us learn to
think like someone trained within this field. Academic writing make extensive use of specialized
vocabulary and is often difficult to read if the reader is unfamiliar. The audience for this type of
reading is a reader with the same background and equivalent preparation. In ... Show more content on

This people do not want to know or monitor the growth of the writer. They want to know what to do,
and what the company is going to do next. Business writers often propose and support strategic
courses of action to their audience.
The problem is that most of the professors do not know what their graduates are doing after they leave
college, they receive some random emails and occasional visits from a few students. Hence, they
continue to teach, as if all of their students will seek graduate work. Often using this fact as a defense
of why they teach a distinct academic theory or author or method of evaluation.
This leads to a program and advising that does our students no good. Instead of guesswork what
students are doing, we need to reach out to our graduates and former students to see where they really
work. Then we should reconsider our courses and cooperate with students to better help them see all
of their true potentials. At our best, we should go further than this and help them find internships or
minors or other majors that will help find meaningful work after graduating. One of the fact is most
freshman undergraduates do not want to become academician for a living end. Even if, they did, there
would be a lot of other courses in their future beyond English composition to introduce the proficiency
of writing for academic purposes.
English composition is a general education course required to be taken by majority of students and yet

Purvanova, R.K Bono, J.E 2009, Transformational leadership in context: Face to face and virtual

An experiment based resource which examines transformational leadership using face to face
communication and virtual teams. Analyses indicated that the most effective leaders were those who
increased their transformational leadership in virtual teams. Team member ratings suggest that
transformational leadership has a stronger effect in teams that use only computer based
communication, and leaders who increase their transformational leadership achieve higher levels of
team performance. This source was of particular use as I had limited information on transformational
leadership and it applied the theory to both virtual and face to face teams. The information provided
gave me an understanding as to why transformational leadership is vital when interaction between
group members is limited and high levels of trust in team members is required.
