Individual Identity In Sylvia Plath s Initiation
In the short story Initiation , the author, Sylvia Plath, conveys the theme that being
part of a group and having friends is great, but being an individual and having an
individual identity is stronger. The narrator simply states that Millicent was plain and
shy , but also tells us that Tomorrow she would come to school, proudly, laughingly,
without lipstick, with her brown hair straight and shoulder length, and then
everybody would know, even the boys would know, that she was one of the elect. By
pointing out that she ll come to school, proudly, laughingly, without lipstick, with her
brown hair straight and shoulder length suggest that she simply wants to fit in with
the other girls at school, she wants to stand out, and that she
How Does The Poison Tree Rhyme Scheme
The poem is metaphorical in nature. The title poison tree is a metaphor used to
describe anger which is a harmful emotion, likened to poison. The apple fruit,
borne from the watered poison tree, depicts revenge. Once the poison tree was all
grown it bore the apple fruit which was an evil plan of vengeance. The writer also
uses a regular rhymescheme in the poem to create rhythm. The rhyme schemeis such
that the last words in every two lines in each stanzasound the same. For example, in
the first stanza, the words friend and end , foe and grow . In the second stanza:
fears and tears , smiles and wiles . In the third stanza: night and bright , shine and

This paper relates to those individuals who use education as a means to reach their

The Sufi Order is most prevalent in the Middle East in general but specially in Iran,
Iraq, Turkey and India. Sufism is a mystical religion based on fundamentals of Islam
promoting the most simple and direct connection between human beings and God.
An accomplished member of the Order who has completed his training is called a
Dervish. The Dervish traveled across villages, towns and sometimes countries,
(usually by foot) spreading the teachings of Sufism. Even today, it is not
uncommon to encounter a traveling Dervish when one visits the countries in the
middle east. They spread the message of love and mercy, helping the needy and
poor people. The Dervish have no earthly possessions other than the clothes on their
back. Their lifestyle is dominated by teaching through story telling, singing, fortune
telling (using astrological calendars) and healing the sick with herbs and extracts.
It is important to realize that there are many sects within Sufism, which reflect its
evolution similar to other religions or ways of life. A qualified description of Dervish
is provided by Kabir Helminski an author and translator of three books of Sufi poetry
and a recognized leader in the Sufi Order.
A dervish is an apprentice, one who is learning the profession that will provide

Prevention And Treatment Of Periodontal Disease
Introduction
Periodontal disease is one of the most common chronic inflammatory diseases and is
also the second most frequent cause of tooth loss among adults. The toxins produced
by bacteria stimulate an inflammatory response in which the body turns upon itself
and results in the supporting tissues of the teeth being progressively destroyed.
Periodontal disease is multifactorial and susceptibility is dependent on the
composition of individual s microflora together with specific local and systemic risk
factors. Local risk factors include any plaque retentive features which hinders plaque
removal such as crowding, calculus, overhangs and orthodontic appliance. Systemic
risk factors include diabetes, genetic and smoking. Smoking is an important risk factor
for the initiation and progression of periodontal diseases and a number of researches
have demonstrated the detrimental effect of smoking on patient s periodontal status
as well as their response to periodontal treatment.
Content of cigarette
Smoking has widespread systemic effects as it contains over 4000 toxic chemicals
including Benzene, Formaldehyde and Ammonia. Benzene is a solvent used in
making fuel, Formaldehyde is used to preserve dead bodies and Ammonia can be
found in cleaning fluids. There are also potent carcinogens such as Nitrosamines and
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The component of inhaled smoke includes nicotine
, carbon monoxide and tar. Nicotine has numerous effects such as increasing blood

The, Legend, Lore, And Hearsay Essay
Over the course of a long and arduous journey to find a place to settle, the people
found themselves through the journey. They found many things that they liked,
and they settled around the things that gave them the best opportunities for
survival. Consequently, they created a system of belief that got them through the
long wait for land, and once they got it, they praised it. In the course of that long
migration they had come of age as a person. After all, they had conceived a good
idea of themselves; they had dared to image and determine who they were,
(Momaday, 77). Here Momaday addresses the migration of his ancestors. As a
result, the people had been modified by their journey, and so finally they began to
consider who they were and what they were meant to become. What remains is
fragmentary: mythology, legend, lore, and hearsay and of course the idea itself, as
crucial and complete as it ever was. That is the miracle, (Momaday, 77). In regards
to his culture, Momday expresses his perception of the stories his father once told
him as a child. Indeed, he is now old enough to understand the myths, and the great
legends that have shaped his culture and living environment. It is a whole journey,
intricate with motion and meaning; and it is made with the whole memory, that
experience of the mind which is legendary as well as historical, personal as well as
cultural, (Momaday, 87). The journey made the legends being told more legendary.

Different Types Of ADHD
Symptoms
The primary features of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder include inattention
and hyperactive impulsive behavior. ADHD symptoms start before age 12, and in
some children, they re noticeable as early as 3 years of age. ADHD symptoms can be
mild, moderate or severe, and they may continue into adulthood.
ADHD occurs more often in males than in females, and behaviors can be different in
boys and girls. For example, boys may be more hyperactive and girls may tend to be
quietly inattentive.
There are three subtypes of ADHD:
Predominantly inattentive. The majority of symptoms fall under inattention.
Predominantly hyperactive impulsive. The majority of symptoms are hyperactive and
impulsive.

Cramped in a small Los Angeles office, Walt Disney drew a few larger than life
cartoons. After Disney s big hit Alice Comedies and cartoons of Mickey and the
gang, he moved his office to Burbank, California. There, Walt and his brother, Roy,
came up with their most famous movies such as Cinderella, Snow White, and Alice
in Wonderland. Now with two American amusement parks, three international
parks, multiple cruise lines, multiple resorts, over five hundred films, and over
thirty academy award, it s hard to not heard of Disney. Every boy or girl has at
least seen or heard of Disney movies. It s such a big part of society today that it
becomes influential in a kid s childhood. This project will look at the underlying
effect of the Disney princess phenomenon and how it shapes a young girls
perspective of herself and how she s supposed to be.
Growing up, all I ever did was watch Disney movies and the Disney channel. Now as
I m older, I can t help but realize that all the movies are exactly the same. The
princess is stuck in a dilemma and then a perfect prince comes along and saves her
and then they marry in the end. Other than a similar plot, all the movies have very
similar character traits. England, Descartes, and Collier Meek in Gender Role
Portrayal and the Disney Princesses explain the characters, traditionally masculine
(e.g., athletic, brave) and traditionally feminine (e.g., helpful, nurturing)
characteristics exhibited by the prince and princess characters through
Geothermal Energy is the Solution to the Energy Crisis

Geothermal Energy: A Solution to the Energy Crisis
Abstract
So far, scientists have not found a successful substitute for fossil fuels that can
handle both the large demand for energy and solve the global warming problem. I
propose that geothermal energy is a clean, widely available, and renewable
alternative to the usage of fossil fuels. In this paper, I will explain how use of
geothermal resources can be energy efficient, environmentally clean, and cost
effective. I believe that the US government should increase funding for geothermal
energy research. This may be the solution to our present energy crisis and global
warming.

There is a call of action to solve today s energy crisis. What we need urgently is a

Fossil fuels (oil, coal, natural gas) take up about 80 % of total energy consumed.
Fossil fuels cause pollution and global warming yet we continue to use them. Our
demand for fossil fuels has become so great that according to current projections,
Earth s reserves will be depleted within the next 200 years. But we do not actually
have 200 years to wait. Our run away consumption of fossil fuel not only endangers
our ability to meet our future energy needs but also the environment. Fossil fuels
cause significant pollution and global warming. This in turn compromises wildlife
habitats and can even lead to extinction of animal and plant species. By looking at
new sources such as geothermal energy, we can move towards a source that is not
extremely harmful and yet still effective.
Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is heat energy that is stored underneath Earth s surface. It is
mainly found at volcanoes, hot springs, or geysers. Heat stored in the hot water and
steam found at these locations is captured and can be used to heat buildings or
generate electricity. This energy source is renewable because heat from the earth is
continuously produced. To obtain energy, you must either use hot water or steam
from the source. The most common way of capturing the energy from geothermal
sources is to tap into naturally occurring hydrothermal convection systems where
cooler water seeps into Earth s crust, is heated up, and then rises to the
Internal and External Conflicts in the Novel Lord of the...
Conflict is not something that can be avoided, especially in fiction. In fact, conflict
is the main purpose of how a story came to be without conflict, there will be no story.
As quoted from Peder Hill (n.d.), Its the primary ingredient that weaves together all
the other elements of a novel . However, conflictcan arise in a story in various forms
and they alter the course of the story. For instance, a conflict of decision. What
decision is made by the characters moves the story. This is called external conflict,
which Rector (2002) defines as a struggle between a character and an outside force .
On the other hand, conflict within a character may also arise, which is called internal
conflict. Internal conflict means a struggle that... Show more content on

Simon, for instance, battles with himself about the beast . When the discussion
about the beast goes on in chapter five, Simon is hesitant on explaining about the
beast. From his line maybe there is a beast (pg. 89), he struggles to explain to
everyone what he thought the beast really is. Simon knows that the beast is not
corporeal, but rather an evil within humankind. His conflict within himself
regarding the beast s identity moves the story when he ventures out to search for
the beast. In result, he stumbles into the Lord of the Flies, who confirms his
knowledge about the beast that it is actually the evil within the boys. It also ends
up in his death, when he wants to tell the boys about the real beast. As for Piggy,
he tries very hard to gain everyone s approval, especially Ralph s. His desire for
approval is apparent since the first chapter, when he asked for Ralph s name and
expects Ralph to ask his in return (pg. 11). But it is more apparent in the fourth
chapter, when Piggy suggests to Ralph that they build a sundial (pg. 64). Ralph s
reaction towards Piggy s idea was out of pity, but Piggy misinterpreted it as
friendliness and rejoiced at Ralph s smile. Piggy, however, did not seek Jack s
approval, as he always retaliated Jack s abusive behaviour towards him. Jack kept on
bullying Piggy physically punching him and broke his glasses in the fourth chapter

Physical And Psychological Aspects Of A Monster
My understanding of a monster when I began this semester was that a monster is
an evil being who can have physical and psychological aspects that add to the evil.
The most basic form of monster is physically unattractive and has general physical
deformities. These deformities included fanged teeth, large claws, and super
strength. Psychologically monsters behave recklessly because they do not abide
by the social limitations that everyone else does. Monsters excel in disguising
themselves from society and hiding in the shadows. They crave darkness to shelter
them from societal duties. This craving is derived from either a mental illness or an
innate sense to try out being evil. Monsters to me were those of fairy tales and scary
movies such as werewolves and serial killers. The physical and mental attributes of
monsters can be seen in the novelReason to Breathe by Rebecca Donovan. Physical
attributes of a monsterare the first thing that draws my attention when reading a
novel or watching a movie. The classic view of a monster is found in old novels or
movies that deal with things such as Frankenstein or Dracula, and even zombies.
The most terrifying in my brain though is the monster that hides from everyone
because physically the being would not be recognized. Reason to Breathe is a
novel that describes Emma, a girl who bears the weight of abuse and deals with it so
her cousins can keep their mom, her aunt Carol. In the end, Emma wins her freedom
from Carol. Carol is

As their journey to and through the Congo is just beginning it is already seen that
compromise will be the key source for survival. The Congo did not have much to
offer the Price family, though Leah has high expectations for it. She expected
everything: jungle flowers, wild roaring beasts. God s Kingdom in its pure,
unenlightened glory. ( Kingsolver, 17) The Congo is already revealing an
expectation Leah would never have found between the pages of a King James
version, the rewiring of her thoughts on equality and her inner need to fight for
justice are compelling emotions that are overtaking her. She can see that this place
poses a potential challenge much greater than anything a hot Georgia summer put her
family through. Still measuring her worth in the few short breaths her father permits

acceptance of her father. If only I could ever bring forth all that I knew quickly

What Role Did Religion Play In Life During The Middle
Ages
Religion played an important role in life during the Middle Ages. Christianity itself
was a huge factor in everyday life. Monks and nuns were men and women who
devoted their lives to Christianity by cutting their ties with the outside world. They
achieved this by living apart from the outside world in secluded communities known
as monasteries where they could focus their attention, religious studies and practices
/activities. These communities self sufficient as they were able to harvest crops and
raise animals. Nuns lived in similar communities known as convents. These were
separate from the monasteries. Monks and Nuns took vows of celibacy and
obedience before entering the life of monasticism. With these vows they were not

Reflection Of The Past Ten Weeks
A Reflection of the Past Ten Weeks in FYI 101 When I started college at
Augustana in August and walked into my first day of FYI 101, bright and early on a
Monday morning, I did not know what was in store for me to learn in the following
ten weeks. Coming into college I could not write in a proper, college way. I did not
know how to properly cite sources that I used. This included in text citations and
work cited pages. I also would write every essay in a five or six paragraph format
instead of writingmany shorter paragraphs. I finally did not know how to use
commas or semicolons among many other grammar concepts. I also struggles with
comprehending challenging passages. When I would read I would not understand
what I was reading and would just annotate the main points that the article made by
restating the point in the margins of the paper. Needless to say I learned a lot over
the past ten weeks. One of the first pieces of reading that we read in FYI 101 was
Plato s Allegory of the Cave . This was a passage that I particularly struggled with.
When I read I could not understand what Plato was saying. Due to this I could not
annotate the passage. I spent a lot of time reading and rereading the passage and
eventually was able to start to understand the points that Plato was making. I was then
able not only to annotate what the main points were but was also able to make
connections to other pieces we have read through the term and notice literary
elements in the work. For
The Emergence Of Social Web Essay
The emergence of social web has changed the World Wide Web. This new concept
was introduced in 1996 by Rheingold. In addition of the principle aim of the web
that consists of an open access to information, the second generation of Web
applications, Web 2.0 applications, has allowed for users to communicate
effectively with each other. Hence, the web transformed from a web where most
users were consumers passively viewing website (i.e. information) to a more active
and participatory actors. Users are now consumers and contributors of information,
so, the web has been transformed from a hypertext environment to a web of people
environment that connects family, friends and colleagues enabling them to share
different type of information. This paradigm has resulted to a new medium of
communication known as User Generated Content (UGC) where users made
together a substantial effort to publish and produce their own content in different
ways and with various formats to enrich the web experience. This content can be
produced with various formats that depends on the social media stream used, it
cover (i) materials that users make available through blog, wiki and social media
sharing services (e.g. YouTube , Instagram , etc); (ii) feedback such as comments,
review, rates; (iii) and social networkdata including public profiles, social network
structure and user interactions. Given the amount of information produced in social
media platforms, new challenges were raised, which are
Assembling The Clarinet
The clarinet is a woodwind instrument that are typically used for orchestral bands,
jazz bands, and other genres of bands.
There are five pieces to the clarinet, the mouthpiece, barrel, upper joint, lower joint,
and the bell. Assembling a clarinet at first seems quite difficult because it has the
most pieces in the woodwind family, but in actuality it is quite easy once you do it
once or twice. When you assemble, clarinet players typically start with the bottom
and up. Although there is not wrong a way to assemble the clarinet, as it will not
affect sound. Assuming if you start from the bottom up, you d first need to take the
bell. You will attach the bell piece to the lower joint. To attach the upper joint and
lower joint together, you must

RIP A Remix Manifesto
RIP: A Remix Manifesto offers a convincing case for copyright reform raising the
issues about the viscous control on the ownership of intellectual property against the
free access to share ideas. Gaylor (2008) is passionate about the ridiculous copyright
laws and their ongoing restrictive modifications in the USA that are demolishing the
creativity of new ideas and innovations that these copyrightlaws were originally
meant to protect. Gaylor (2008) uses his favourite artist Girl Talk who samples and
remixes music, to centre his documentary in an effort to defend the public domain
and its ability to share free idea, along with the use of the remixer s manifesto
Number 1. Culture always builds on the past. Number 2. The past always tries to

used the creativity of the past for the inspiration of their new idea; including Walt
Disney and Metallica who has borrowed previously made song structures from

Ford v.s Dodge: The Battle of the Cars
We live in the 21st century, which is considered to be the era of modern technology
and sophisticated ingenuity. Yet up to this day, two brands have managed to keep up
with the 21st century. Which includes the best technology in automotive industryand
the capability of implementing sophisticated aerodynamics. Ford and Dodge have
been head to head with each other since the early 1900 s. Both of these car brands
are known to have built some of the best muscle cars out in the world. But what
many people don t know is that Ford and Dodge also represent a piece of freedom
and America.

In the upcoming years, both Ford and the Dodge company would face some of the
most difficult hardships that would either make or break both of the companies, and
all their time and effort the founders have dedicated to the automobile industry. On
January, 14th, 1920, John Francis Dodge had passed away, leaving the company
to his brother. Soon after John Francis death, Horace Elgin Dodge had also passed
away from Influenza on December, 20th, 1920. Leaving the the Dodge company
behind ranked in 2nd place in the automobile industry. With no one to left in charge
of the Dodge company, the company was later sold to the Graham Brothers who
were a truck manufacturing company. Eventually Ford was also hit with some
hardships. Henry Ford had also passed away in April, 7, 1947 from Cerebral
Hemorrhage. Soon after Henry Ford s death the company was passed down to his
grandson Henry Ford II. Leaving all of henry s innovation and ingenuity behind.
Yet with big drawbacks from both companies, Ford and Dodge managed to
progress. After nearly 40 years both Dodge and Ford started taking their cars and
their companies to another level. By funding special groups focused on sports cars,
it would promise the automakers a chance to compete in the Le man s race and
target car enthusiast. Carroll Shelby would be the creator of the mustang gt350,
gt500, and the gt race car, that would be used in the Le man s race. On the other hand
A Common Problem Today For Adolescent Christians
A common problem today for adolescent Christians is the lack of intimacy with God,
and not fully experiencing Christ in their lives. The solution to this problem can be
found in the spiritual disciplines. Spiritual disciplines are practices that aid in
transforming believers into the image of Christ, and help them to develop a more
intimate relationship with Christ. They help to bring a Christian into the presence of
God, and to bring them a portion of heaven. According to Isaac Ambrose, an English
Puritan minister from the seventeenth century, spiritual disciplines are the vehicles to
God. He said: ...the saints look upon duties (the Word, Sacraments, Prayers, etc.) as
bridges to give them a passage to God, as boats to carry them into the bosom of
Christ, as means to bring them into more intimate communion with their heavenly
Father, and therefore are they so much taken with them (Schwanda 1). Ambrose
argued that through spiritual disciplines, one could experience an intimate
relationship with God. The spiritual disciplines are broken into three categories,
inward, outward, and corporate. From these three categories, the three main focuses
are meditation, service, and worship. Through the application of these three spiritual
disciplines, the main goal is to enter a deeper, more intimate relation with Christ and
to be shaped into the image of Christ. The first spiritual discipline is meditation.
According to WordNet, meditation is the continuous and profound
Promote Americanism In School
What can I Personally do to Promote Americanism in my School or Community?
Americanism is a word that we should all be familiar with. It is something that
defines this country and the people in it. Americanism to me is being courteous
and gracious to the country that you live in. In my essay, I will be talking about
what it means to have a flag in the classroom, community service, and how to be a
citizen of your town/city. My first main point is what it symbolizes to have a
school flag in the classroom. I believe that every classroom, big or small, should
have an American flag to support our country and be proud to live in it. This is
one of the many ways to show that you service the people that have sacrificed their
lives for us. The 50 stars represent the 50 states that are free because of them. They
are American heroes and the flag is representing that we will never forget them.
They are one with the flag. Believing in this, there should be a flag in practically
every corner.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Depending on where you live, community service is different for everyone. But
despite where your community is, there is always a way to help out and contribute.
Community service is a way to show that you as a citizen, are grateful to live in a
community that supports you and you would like to keep that tradition going in the
town. Community doesn t have to be a thing to get into a good school. It should be
something to do out of respect for your family and the people that you care about

1. Introduction. The Purpose Of This Report Is To Design
1. Introduction
The purpose of this report is to design the minor storm drainage system of the Town
of Adamsville in a manner that satisfies the flow and serviceability requirements of
the Town of Adamsville Engineering Design Criteria and Standards Manual. The
report outlines the approach taken to accomplish this. The system was also tested to
satisfy the velocity conditions and the runoff flows for a 1:5 year precipitation event
set by the design criteria. The testing methodology used to determine the effectiveness
of the system and the corresponding results are also stated. Wherever assumptions are
made, they are stated clearly in that section.

2. Network Design
2.1 Division of development into areas
The development was divided into 38 individual area, each of which are represented
by a pipe section in the minor system of the stormwater drainage network. The pipes
were placed between the manholes or until the end of the limited proposal
development boundary and when connecting internal catch basins to the closest
stormwater manhole on the street. Note: Pipes connecting to the catch basins on the
street and the interior manholes were not part of our scope in this project.
Considerations were made by dividing the regions in such a way that they are
geographically located close to the pipe segments, and are similar in size. Refer to
the plan drawing in Appendix A for the locations of pipes and areas. For this
project, a portion of single family dwellings 44 to 47 (see Appendix A for excluded
area) were not included in the design due to the lack of an adjacent area for pipe
placements. Furthermore, a pipe was not installed between Manhole 14 and 21, since
it would form a loop and would complicate the design process and cover
requirements.
2.2 Addition of catch basins
Where required, catch basins were added to ensure a pathway for runoff to drain.
Catch basins were added to the lowest elevation point(s) of the area. They were also
placed on either sides of the road as the runoff cannot overcome the crown of
Gynecomastia Research Paper
Gynecomastia is the medical term for female like breasts on males. The word is
derived from the Greek language and actually translates to womanly breasts. Most
guys don t talk about it but many more of them suffer from it than one might
imagine. In fact, some estimates put the incidence of this malady at half of the male
population. To get rid of these soft appendages, guys can opt for surgical
intervention. Here are some things to think about. What causes it? There are various
ways gynecomastia can occur, including being overweight, taking drugs (recreational
or prescription), genetic predisposition or bad luck. Some evidence points to use of
steroids in body builders, or marijuana in pot smokers. Many adolescent boys exhibit
these surprising mounds on their chest as they re experiencing the hormonal changes

The first thing a sufferer of gynecomastia should do is see his doctor. The physician
will rule out tumors in the chest and prescription medicine side effects, and may
put him on a diet to get rid of some weight. If none of these fixes alleviates the
problem, his next step may be to see a cosmetic surgeon. Other than that, his only
options would be to wear a flattening garment over his man boobs for life or live
with slight cleavage. If a man really does not like his appearance, cosmetic surgery
can be an option. Surgical intervention: In order to return the patient s chest to a
more manly appearance, the plastic surgeon may perform a combination of
liposuction and breast reduction. These would be outpatient procedures performed
in a hospital or clinic setting. Liposuction: Lipo is a technique which removes fatty
deposits that haven t responded to dieting or exercise. The MD will make tiny
incisions in the region before inserting a medical tool called a cannula into the
openings. A cannula is a slender wand that is hooked up to a lipo machine in order

A Comparison Of All Quiet On The Western Front
All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque and actual happenings
from the war display many similarities. The book does go much more in depth with
the war than any other resource or letter, but there is similarities in everything in the
book to any other info about World War 1. Looking from All Quiet on the Western
Frontto actual happenings in the war you can bring them together and see the
similarities in living as a soldier in the trenches, and how the men passed time during
World War 1.
Life for a soldier in the trenches in WW1 as described in actual letters and as
described as in the book sounded very alike. In the book it talks about the human
eating rats, trench foot and leaving the dead bodies lying on the ground just for
something dry to walk on. Killing each separate louse is a tedious business when a
man has hundreds. The little beasts are hard and the everlasting cracking with one
s fingernails very soon becomes wearisome. (Remarque, 1929, p. 75) This is an
example in the book that can be connected to real life is when Paul and all the
other men are sitting around the fire picking lice out and burning them in a tin.
Since then we have learned better than to be shy about such trifling immodesties.
(Remarque, 1929 p. 8) In that sentence Paul is discussing the toilets, or latrines,
saying how when he first started using the them they were nasty and it was
embarrassing, but now he s comfortable with using them. I cannot bear to look at
his hands, they are like wax. Under the nails is the dirt of the trenches, it shows
through blue black like poison. (Remarque, 1929, p. 15) Paul describes the trench
mud as poison, because it is. It caused men to lose limbs, feet and sometimes their
lives because it caused gangrene. The rats here are particularly repulsive they are
so fat the kind we call corpse rats. (Remarque, 1929, p. 102) The trenches could be
very muddy and smelly. There were many dead bodies buried nearby and the
latrines (toilets) sometimes overflowed into the trenches. Millions of rats infested
the trenches and some grew as big as cats. There was also a big problem with lice
that tormented the soldiers on a daily basis. (Heirs, 2014). In the article it

P3: Describe the potential effects of discriminatory practice on those who use
health or social care services. Discrimination has the potential to affect individuals
in wide ranging ways. In health and social care, the effects of discrimination can be
catastrophic and even end in the death of a service user. Anyone planning a career in
health and social care should be aware of the potential negative effects caused by
discrimination. We will explore them here. Marginalisation As you might expect,
marginalisation means being pushed to the margins of society. In other words, you

Restricted opportunities Discrimination, as we have already seen, has the potential
to prevent access to health and social care services. This could be through the
attitudes and beliefs of the health care workers who fail to value all individuals or
it could be through the effects of low self esteem. Negative behaviours including
aggression and criminality Another effect of discrimination can be seen in the
behaviour of individuals. This is particularly noticeable in children, who often
display negative behaviours in order to gain attention, even when that attention is
negative! Adults and young people as a result of discrimination and low self
esteem can also display negative behavioural traits. However, in these cases the
behaviour can take on a much more sinister appearance. It may manifest itself as
aggression towards those holding power (including health care professionals or
those working in the employment and judicial services) and through criminal
activity such as drug taking, burglary and physical violence. Loss of rights There
have been cases in the national media of care homes, secure or forensic units
(places of security for people with dangerous psychiatric behaviours) and individual
carers being accused of systematically discriminating against the people in their care
and overriding their individual rights by the use of power or force. Older, vulnerable

Summary Of The Wayzata High School Auditorium
The Wayzata High School auditorium had been transformed into an art museum
full of Caleb s paintings. There was a long table covered with hundreds of candles
and matchbooks. An adjacent table displayed a guest book where friends and
family wrote down messages and prayers. The pastor from the Miller s church
distributed flyers about Caleb and suggested prayers to help him and his family
through this difficult time. Dr. Reynolds opened the pamphlet and scanned down
the back of the front page. As his eyes glanced over, he was surprised to see the last
section dedicated entirely to Becca and her struggle. He read every word. The
Coopers and the Millers were quietly conversing with the Davenports in a small
circle far across the auditorium. Cathy was gushing to Mrs. Miller about what a
wonderful and brave son she had and how much their family owed him and Matt
for saving Ashley. Matt, Miranda, Ashley and George congregated with twenty
other friends discussing the added weight they all felt when hearing about Becca s
condition. Paige stood fifteen feet away with a group of friends, sobbing
uncontrollably in Marcy s arms. The auditorium was already packed, and people
were still pouring in. Dr. Reynolds main objective for the evening was to appear
concerned. There were plenty of other doctors and nurses from Methodist in
attendance and to cast suspicion away from himself, he needed to be amongst them.

Short Acting Barbiturates
Like alcohol, barbiturates also bind to the GABA A receptors to continuously arouse
the neurotransmitter GABA. This causes the inhibitory effects of the
neurotransmitter to be excessive, which causes the drug to be a depressant. Large
amounts of this drug being consumed causes the respiration rate to be reduced.
Unfortunately, this can contribute to death because breathing can be stopped
completely. The drug is usually consumed to treat anxiety and causes users to
become calm and relaxed. There are two types of barbiturates called short acting and
long acting barbiturates. Short acting barbiturates causes rapid onset and the effects
span for about two or three hours. Barbiturates that are considered long acting will

Essay On Remembrance Day
The History of Remembrance Day
Remembrance Day is a day of memorial observed all around the world. Since the
end of World War I, the Commonwealth of Nations have looked at November 11th
as a day to remember those who fought for our countries, to protect their citizens,
and protect our freedom. Without these brave soldiers, we wouldn t have the
opportunity to do many things we do today, and our world would be very different.
The history of this day is very important for people all around the world to
understand, and observe, to show their gratitude for those who have risked their lives
for us. Important points in the history of Remembrance Day is the beginning of the
recognition, how it is observed in different nations and the importance of the
symbolic poppy flower.
First of all, the recognition of Remembrance Day is annual on November 11th
because of the end of World War I. The official end of World War I was set for the
11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month (11:00 am, November 11th). After WWI,
the British Commonwealth began noticing this day as Armistice Day , to
commemorate the day the signing of the armistice. In 1919, King George V chose
to continue the tradition of remembering those who have risked or lost their lives
for us. Since then, the formal name for this day of memorial has been Remembrance
Day . This day is informally known as Poppy Day . As well as the Commonwealth,
countries outside of this organization began to recognize this day of

Like Pynchons reader s, Oedipa is forced to either work toward interpreting the

aimlessly, she is forcibly drawn out of the complacency of her own existence; into
a chaotic system of intrigue that reaches far beyond her normal scope of
understanding. In the same turn, like Oedipa the reader s role is also based on
interpreting numerous symbols and metaphorical clues as a means of stumbling
upon a legible conclusion that will stop the madness. Each of them arriving at a
different conclusion or none at all solely depended upon how far the use of our
perceptions will allow us to go. Unfortunately both Oedipa and the reader (myself

what is real and relevant and what is unreal and irrelevant, both are left feeling

What Therapy Never Taught Me
To whom it may actually concern,
My mother is a walking contradiction and I have tried to tell her everything in this
letter hundreds of times, but maybe you, will be the one to actually care. I don t
expect you to understand, but she is my hero and my nightmare. Meet my mom;
she is available from seven o clock in the morning until four o clock at night, but
afterwards I only have a father. It has been this way well before I was born because
my mother is an alcoholic. God, I hate saying that. She is so lucky I never say that.
I can remember as early as age three when every night, around six o clock, my
mother would stumble downstairs to the living room and pass out on the couch.
Then, my sister and I would fight over who got to sit in the folds of her legs,
thinking it was so silly that Mommy would sleep so soon after dinner. It was not
until senior year when I reflected on this part of my childhood, that I realized how
terrible it was that I fought to be close to someone so terrible. I am eighteen now
and I am still not sure if all the years I have lived at home that her alcoholism has
gotten worse, or if I have just finally understood the addict she is. When I was
younger, I always accepted the fact that mother slept early and could not drive me to
the movies with my friends. I accepted that my mom got rowdy when we went to
dinner and fell asleep at the table. I accepted that Mom and Dad spoke very little, but
fought constantly. I
Galilei During The Scientific Revolution
Galileo Galilei was an Italian scientist who built on the new theories during the
Scientific Revolution. The Scientific Revolution was a period that historians
describe as emergence of modern during the mid 1500 s to about the end of the
1600 s. As a young man Galileo, learned of an object that could make far away
objects seem bigger. The object he is referring to the the telescope the Dutch lens

Heavens . Was Galileo more revolutionary than Nicolaus Copernicus, Tycho Brahe
or any philosopher of that time period? Yes, Galileo was more revolutionary than
any of those philosophers because he found and did things that wasn t accepted
during that time period. What did he do? As briefly said before he improved the
telescope. As to popular belief, Galileo did not in fact invent the telescope actually.
A Dutch lens maker named Hans Lippershey invented the first one in 1608. He did
this by creating a telescope that had a concave eyepiece aligned with a convex
objective lens. His telescope could only magnify three time original object. Hans
didn t have a use for his telescope, however others made their own and used it for
spying and sailing. In 1609 Galileo heard about this invention and decided to create
his own. The tool that Galileo used was a refracting telescope. His initial version of
his telescope only magnified 8x however it was soon refined to the 20x
magnification. He accomplished

This offering of France to Canada is a sign of respect as France is willingly giving
land to Canada to thank them for the vitory they brought. As a result of this, Canada
would respected by other nations when they realize how large of a task Canada
attempted and conquered during its first war. Finally, France spent tons of money on
creating a memorial monument for Canada on the land they ceded. After ceding the
land France also spent 11 years and $1,500,000 on a limestone monument as a
poignant reminder of the sixty thousand Canadians who died serving their country
during World War I. By spending the money and time to create a monument for
Canada shows that France has a great deal of respect for Canadians and what they

Buy American Provision Essay
Discussion Board #2 a. Are attempts to protect U.S. firms from foreign competition,
such as the Buy American provision, good ideas? Explain. Protecting U.S. firms
from foreign competition may be helpful in a way because they create more
domestic jobs, however overall they have a negative impact on the economy. They
hurt the economy because they cause more spending by the government and in turn
increase the debt. It is also a lot less efficient to use only American manufactured
goods because the U.S. does not have a comparative advantage in all goods. The
main example of how trying to regulate global trade hurts the economy is the Smoot

consequence is the government will have to spend more money, which will increase

In the Mental Health treatment we can distinguish two different approaches to patient
treatment, this is known as models of treatment, firstly we have a medical model, and
secondary we a using person recovery model.
To understanding of recovery in Australia, we have to acknowledge that is heavily
influenced by recovery research and literature from the USA, Canada and New
Zealand
It is suggested that the term recovery has been adopted in Australia from the late
1980s (Lakeman, 2004, p.212; McGrath et al., 2007). It has become popular in mental
health discourse and influences policy directives and service delivery initiatives
(Meehan et al., 2007; Rickwood, 2004; Slade et al., 2008).
Medical model in the mental health mostly concentrates on the treatment of the
physiological aspect of illness, this model is used at the inpatients admissions, by
psychiatrist overall in the clinical /medical settings.
There are many definitions of term Medical Model many of them suggested that it is
a scientifically proven process, concentrates on the treatment of the symptoms, is not
client centred, and medical professionals are in charge of making and presiding with
consumer treatment plan , some professionals also describe the medical model as the
Western approach to illness.
When we talking about mental health recovery we will take under consideration not
only medical model but also the effect of psychotherapy, and person centred model of
recovery.

House on Mango Street Essay
Chloe Stromberg Mrs. Reedng English Foundations II May 27th, 2013 The House
on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros The House on Mango Street by Sandra
Cisneros is a coming of age novel of a young Mexican American girl developing in
a working class Chicago neighborhood. The author is much like the main character
Esperanza in many different ways. One being that Cisneros was also a Mexican
American girl growing up in a Chicago working class neighborhood. Esperanza is a
foil of Cisneros beliefs and opinions of her Mexican culture and heritage. While
Esperanza is embarrassed of being a Mexican American around white Americans,
Cisneros is proud to be a Mexican American girl. In Sara Rimer s article, San

In Frida Kahlo s painting My Grandparents, My Parents and Me, Kahlo shows what
it is like for a family in the Mexican culture. Kahlo s painting conveys the
preconceived notions of being conscious of your roles in the family, for instance,
the painting displays that the woman is supposed to marry, have a child, raise the
child and have the family of her own. It also displays the family lineage and what a
woman or man aspires to be in life. Currently Sandra Cisneros resides in San
Antonio in a purple house and she describes herself as nobody s mother and
nobody s wife. Both Frida Kahlo s and Cynthia Y. Hernandez s works convey the
idea of having one s culture limit one s freedom and individuality. Cisneros and
Esperanza are both victims of this idea and realize that the only way to live one s
life freely is to defy the roles and limitations created by one s culture. Works Cited

The Characters of Shrek and Lord Farquaad Essay
The Characters of Shrek and Lord Farquaad
In this essay I am going to analyse the characters of Shrek and Lord Farquaad. I will
also explore the different presentational devices used by the film creators of Shrek to
craft an unusual fairytale.
This film cost $6 million to produce. It is based on a traditional fairytale type story
but subverted.
The film was produced by Dreamworks Steven Spielberg s production company.
Dreamworks make animated films. It has a rival animation company in the form of
Disney. It was Disney who first brought out a long animated film which was Snow
White in the 1950 s.
The first computer generated animation was also brought out by Disney called Toy

We are astonished as the viewers as we were expecting a conventional fairytale.
There is a good use of toilet humour and it is aimed at children or teenagers. We
know right from the start that Shrek is a nice character as he has a comical impact
on the film. The sort of humour makes it different from normal, conventional
fairytales and also the big, ugly ogre would normally be a nasty creature but we
know straight away that this is not the case and he proves to be quite the contrary as
the story unfolds.
At the beginning of the film Shrek tries to threaten the characters that he meets, but
Donkey, the mice, the storybook characters and Princess Fiona are not intimidated by
him or his appearance. He tries to make them frightened by reminding them that he s
a scary, horrible monster. Although Shrek is an ogre he is really nice deep down.
When the storybook characters arrive Shrek threatens to throw them all out of his
swamp and back where they came from. There is a close up shot of his mouth, this
implicates that Shrek is going to eat them or kill them and enhances the threat.
Shrek tries to frighten them by threatening them, by shouting at them and the close up
shot of his mouth develops the idea that Shrek is trying to be scary. The storybook
characters applaud Shrek. Shrek s angry
Collateral Consequences
Many people who are being convicted of felonies have collateral consequences.
Collateral consequences are civil an/or political rights that are lost temporarily is
some cases, or permanently in others following a felony conviction (Alarid,pg.252).
Most people who are convicted felons and suffer from collateral consequences, can
ruin their reputation which can make difficult for the felon to be trustful or be
credible in society. While most of the consequences are mostly temporary when
spending time in correctional supervision, others can last a life time. In the book,
they gave good reasons why offenders are removed some of their civil rights. One of
reason is that they remove their rights to maintain public confidence in the court

Lincoln s Attitude To The Civil War
The Civil War was a war between the South and the North. In the South they
wanted slavery, and if they were in the North they did not. The conflict arose when
the North wanted to abolish slavery, and the South wanted to continue. The Civil
War was a 4 year battle, in the United States. The Union and the Confederate
soldiers fought from 1861 to 1865 in the Civil War. Slaves were a big part of
history, and later causing the Civil War. The Portuguese began the enslavements of
Africans in the fifteenth century, were they brought them to Europe to work as
laborers or servants. Tobacco farming began in Virginia, Carolina, and Maryland, but
was labor intensive so they enslaved african americans, who later died from being

1861 to 1865 he led the United States during the Civil War. He ended slavery and
helped keep the union from falling apart during the war. In 1860 he received 40%
of the presidential vote, but by 1865 he became popular (Holzer, Harold.). Even
though his feeling towards slavery did not change Lincoln s decision to fight. He
believed it was his job as president to maintain the Union.(Abraham Lincoln).
Abraham Lincoln s strategy was to advance at the Confederates at the same time.
His goal for the Union armies was to destroy opposing forces. Changing generals
many times he found a general that would fight aggressively, Ulysses S. Grant.
(Holzer, Harold.) McDowell, Fremont, McClellan, Pope, Buell, Burnside, and
Rosecrans looked harmful to Abraham Lincoln when they failed to bring success to
the Union (Abraham Lincoln). He often visited his fighting grounds to see if his
strategy was being used. He was dissatisfied until he found Ulysses S. Grant. During
the war, Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation, for the freedom of all slaves.
In 1863 the Gettysburg Address was delivered to the United States, letting the federal
army fight to keep the Union (ebscohost). The Emancipation Proclamation seized
property of those fighting against the Union (Abraham Lincoln). Their victory was
achieved April 9, 1869, but less than a week later Abraham Lincoln was assassinated
(ebscohost). Abraham Lincoln was a great president, and ended the
The Gulf War Essay
The Gulf War
The Gulf War was much more than a fight to liberate Kuwait. It was the first non
conventional war; in which new, fairly new, or even experimental weapons were
used. The Gulf War displayed much new technology that you will learn lots about in
this paper. This paper may sound very technical, but that is what it is about, the new
weapon technology vs. the conventional types of weapons used in previous wars.
This paper is about the advancement of weapon technology, and how the military
changed the tactics used before.

Ticonderoga classes, and destroyers of the Arleigh Burke and Spruance classes.
Desert Storm was the first combat test of the cruise missile system. It also marked the
first coordinated Tomahawk and manned aircraft strike in history. Within the first few
minutes of Operation Desert Storm, Tomahawk missiles launched from battleships
Missouri and Wisconsin struck with accuracy at Iraq s presidential palace, (Hersh,

During the war, 297 Tomahawks were fired, of which 282 began their mission

the tube. At least two, and possibly as many as 6 were shot down, most or all of
them in a single mission profile most of the way to its target, (Friedman, Naval

that were in the stealth/low observability category: the F 117 stealth fighter and two
long range cruise 3 missiles, the Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM) and the
Conventional Air Launched Cruise Missile (CALCM).

Merger Between Daimler And Chrysler
The merger between Daimler and Chrysler was expected to be a success in the
economy especially with the current trend and demand in the automotive sector.
Daimler is considered one of the most successful and profitable automotive
companies across the globe. Founded in 1893 as the Daimler Motor Syndicate Ltd, its
growth and expansion in the automotive sector has been facilitated by the need to
meet the interests and needs of its key stakeholders (Barnard, 1998). The vehicles that
are manufactured by the company are of high standard and the quality is top notch.
Most of its customers are concerned with the satisfaction level that they achieve when
they purchase the motor vehicles. The implementation of the luxurious car segment
meant that the trend in the economy has considerably changed and there was need
for improving the brand image and the superiority of the products offered.
According to Barnard (1998), Daimler s merger with Chrysler was undertaken due to
the need to expand its operations and initiatives across the globe. Chrysler is
considered one of the smallest automobiles sectors when it is considered with the
three biggest U.S. automakers, which includes Ford and General Motors.
Understanding the trend in the economy, the company implemented its operations in
the North American market with the intention of tapping on the mass market that was
available in the region.
The two companies had distinct motives and objectives for undertaking merger.

How Did The Environment Affect The Shang Civilization
The Shang Dynasty, was where they were in the world, partly because of the
geography there. The land there had two major rivers, the Yellow or Huang River,
and the Chang River. These two rivers made the land around them very fertile for
farming, and since most of the first settlers of the Shang were nomads, or farmers,
they decided to stay in this fertile land. Also it became a larger civilizationbecause the
Chinese believed that it was the center of the earth and the sole source of
civilization. The environment of the civilization affected the people because they
relied heavily on it for farming. The crops that were produced were one of their main
sources of food. They still hunted, but crops that farmers produced were still there

Some of the gods that they believed in were sun, moon, water, wind, dragon, and
Phoenix gods. They also believed that all of these gods had to have a ruler, so they
also believed in a supreme God called Shang Di. This God was the controller of the
civilization, and controlled all of the other gods. Because they had more than one
God, they were polytheistic. Also the religion of believing in gods of nature is
called animism. Another thing that the Shang people believed in was that there
was an afterlife. For this reason, they put servants and emperors in tombs, so that
the servants could still serve in the afterlife, and the emperors could still rule. The
Shang people made sacrifices to the gods so that the gods would treat them with
good things, such as a good season with an even amount of sun and rain, and so
that the water God will prevent floods. In the Shang civilization, the religious
leaders played a key role in their religion. The religious leaders were the kings and
nobles. Only these people were allowed to speak to the supreme God Shang Di.
These leaders were important because they were the only people in the civilization
that could talk to Shang Di, which meant that they were the only people that could
tell the people of the civilization what Shang Di said to them. For this reason these
leaders were highly recognized and

Presocratic Milesian Research Paper
The three presocratic Milesian thinkers certainly stood out from other early
philosophers at the time. Their practice of material monism was a unique way to look
at the world, and some say that it was the first time that individuals tried to unify the
world. While the earlier Milesians namely Thales and Anaximander had developed
their own theories as to explaining what stuff makes up everything, Anaximenes had
done more to supplement and establish his theory. While the term scientist was first
coined by William Whewell in 1833, over two thousand years after Anaximenes and
the other Milesians lived, science had existed long before that (plato.stanford.edu).
Even though Anaximenes lack of true experimentation and the belief that his subjects
were divine made him a thinker rather than a scientist, he was... Show more content

His viewpoint opposed those of Thales and Anaximander, but was more developed;
Thales believed that water was the answer, while Anaximander simply decided that
the answer was indefinite. Anaximenes integrated the processes of rarefaction and
condensation into his theory air could turn into fire through rarefaction, while it could
be turned into water and then into earth by condensation. While he had thought all of
this out extensively, he failed to prove this; Anaximenes never experimented.
Experimentation is a crucial part of the scientific method and, while the method wasn
t established in presocratic society, a true scientific theory or law cannot be created
without it. Additionally, Anaximenes believed that air was a deity. Abstract concepts
in this case, divine principles almost immediately invalidated his beliefs. Divinity has
never been scientifically proven, and including a divine component in a hypothesis
makes it irrelevant and impossible to correctly
Analysis of Hollow at the Core
Analysis of Hollow at the core : Deconstructing Yann Martel s Life of Pi The author
Florence Stratton s main purpose of this analysis is to deconstruct Yann Martel s
Life of Pi. She argues various points attempting to dissect and make reason of
Martel s choices in the novel. Stratton also discusses the strengths and weaknesses
of the novel s claims. Stratton s major claim is that Martel s treatment of religion
in the novel is not persuasive in making all its readers believe in God. It will,
however, justify the beliefs of those who do believe in God. She states, He [Martel]
is not out to prove the existence of God, but rather to justify a belief in God s
existence (Stratton, 3). Stratton quotes Peter Whittaker, This... Show more content on

The detailed documentation demanded by realism helps to make Pi s better story
substantial or rubust in its imaginative constitution or makeup (5). Stratton goes on
to demonstrate multiple ways in which Martel draws upon the conventions of
realism with details such as Pi s skill as a swimmer, his knowledge of wild animals
(his father being a zoo keeper), his possession of a whistle (part of life saving
equipment in a life jacket) to train the tiger, and his ability to use the laws of physics
to assert his authority over the tiger in his lifeboat (5). Stratton discusses Martel s
elaborative plot and characters, discussing their symbolism. She examines the tiger
Richard Parker in great detail, including the significance of its name as a victim in
other stories of cannibalism. Through the narrator s brilliant description of Richard
Parker Stratton explores the use of colors. She states, The dazzling display of colours
and patterns suggest that Richard Park er s primary signification is the incantatory or
transcendent power of art; the imaginative truths or realities that great art
encompasses (5). Stratton contrasts the tiger with the description of the hyena as an
animal with its mismatched colours, ill proportioned body, and shambling gait (5). In
her essay, Stratton discusses the insatiable appetite of the cook and Frenchman. She
then explores the link between cannibalism and secular

Personally, I am amazed at how quickly Japan managed modernization; what took
Europeans hundreds of years to achieve, they managed to do so in decades. Yes, the
Europeans might have forced, the Japanese to modernize much sooner they
otherwise might have, but in truth, I am glad. People own a lot of technology from
Japan, a country that wouldn t have been able to compete with the West two hundred

gaming consoles, cars; some of the most cutting edge technology is from Japan. It s
easy to image that if Americans were to cut off ties to Japan today, that they might

Populist Leaders In The 20th Century
Populism was a leadership style that focused on mass politics and winning elections ,
it often also went hand in hand with many aspects of nationalism. This political
strategy focuses on social and economic improvement and is aimed at the urban
working and middle classes. Populism began to become popular in Latin America and
the United States, from the 1890s until the end of its hay day in Latin America in
the 1960s. There are many examples of Populist leaders throughout Latin American
history but I will argue that Lazaro Cardenas and Juan Peron are the most important
populist leaders in the region s history. Lazaro Cardenas used populist politics in
order to obtain a broad base of support from the urban and working classes, and
retained the Mexican presidency from 1934 until... Show more content on

Cardenas used the election campaign to build mass support by visiting each of the
states within Mexico, speaking to local chiefs and even the undesirable peasants
and working class. During his presidency he implemented progressive agrarian and
social reforms that saw over fifty million acres of land distributed to around eight
hundred thousand peasants over his presidency. While Cardena invested a great
deal of money into agricultural advancement and dispersion, he also did a great
deal in terms of social programs, such as bettering the education system as a large
population didn t have access to education. He also worked to expand the
availability of electricity to rural areas and to better the healthcare system for the
people. During his presidency along with his distribution of lands to peasants he
also nationalized foreign oil companies in order to create economic growth for the
people of Mexico. Juan Peron approached his populist presidency in Argentina a bit
differently, and used the radio to reach

  • 2. Individual Identity In Sylvia Plath s Initiation In the short story Initiation , the author, Sylvia Plath, conveys the theme that being part of a group and having friends is great, but being an individual and having an individual identity is stronger. The narrator simply states that Millicent was plain and shy , but also tells us that Tomorrow she would come to school, proudly, laughingly, without lipstick, with her brown hair straight and shoulder length, and then everybody would know, even the boys would know, that she was one of the elect. By pointing out that she ll come to school, proudly, laughingly, without lipstick, with her brown hair straight and shoulder length suggest that she simply wants to fit in with the other girls at school, she wants to stand out, and that she

The apple fruit, borne from the watered poison tree, depicts revenge. Once the poison tree was all grown it bore the apple fruit which was an evil plan of vengeance. The writer also uses a regular rhymescheme in the poem to create rhythm. The rhyme schemeis such that the last words in every two lines in each stanzasound the same. For example, in the first stanza, the words friend and end , foe and grow . In the second stanza: fears and tears , smiles and wiles . In the third stanza: night and bright , shine and mine . In the last verse: stole and pole , see and tree . Symbolism

Sufi Teachers and Redefining the Traditional Student Teacher Relationship What does it mean and more important, what should it mean to be educated? (58) A response to Spayd s begs another question. Is education the objective itself or the means to the objective? For some people education is just a degree, a piece of paper framed on the wall. One can say, a person with a diploma has received an education, but it is not certain that the person is educated. This paper relates to those individuals who use education as a means to reach their objective. For them, education is not a straight line with a definitive start and finish. The Sufi Order is most prevalent in the Middle East in general but specially in Iran, Iraq, Turkey and India. Sufism is a mystical religion based on fundamentals of Islam promoting the most simple and direct connection between human beings and God. An accomplished member of the Order who has completed his training is called a Dervish. The Dervish traveled across villages, towns and sometimes countries, (usually by foot) spreading the teachings of Sufism. Even today, it is not uncommon to encounter a traveling Dervish when one visits the countries in the middle east. They spread the message of love and mercy, helping the needy and poor people. The Dervish have no earthly possessions other than the clothes on their back. Their lifestyle is dominated by teaching through story telling, singing, fortune telling (using astrological calendars) and healing the sick with herbs and extracts. It is important to realize that there are many sects within Sufism, which reflect its evolution similar to other religions or ways of life. A qualified description of Dervish is provided by Kabir Helminski an author and translator of three books of Sufi poetry and a recognized leader in the Sufi Order. A dervish is an apprentice, one who is learning the profession that will provide eternal livelihood. This

Prevention And Treatment Of Periodontal Disease Introduction Periodontal disease is one of the most common chronic inflammatory diseases and is also the second most frequent cause of tooth loss among adults. Periodontal disease is multifactorial and susceptibility is dependent on the composition of individual s microflora together with specific local and systemic risk factors. Local risk factors include any plaque retentive features which hinders plaque removal such as crowding, calculus, overhangs and orthodontic appliance. Systemic risk factors include diabetes, genetic and smoking. • 6. The, Legend, Lore, And Hearsay Essay Over the course of a long and arduous journey to find a place to settle, the people found themselves through the journey. They found many things that they liked, and they settled around the things that gave them the best opportunities for survival. Consequently, they created a system of belief that got them through the long wait for land, and once they got it, they praised it. In the course of that long migration they had come of age as a person. After all, they had conceived a good idea of themselves; they had dared to image and determine who they were, (Momaday, 77). Here Momaday addresses the migration of his ancestors. As a result, the people had been modified by their journey, and so finally they began to consider who they were and what they were meant to become. What remains is fragmentary: mythology, legend, lore, and hearsay and of course the idea itself, as crucial and complete as it ever was. That is the miracle, (Momaday, 77). In regards to his culture, Momday expresses his perception of the stories his father once told him as a child. Indeed, he is now old enough to understand the myths, and the great legends that have shaped his culture and living environment. It is a whole journey, intricate with motion and meaning; and it is made with the whole memory, that experience of the mind which is legendary as well as historical, personal as well as cultural, (Momaday, 87). The journey made the legends being told more legendary. His people crafted a culture

After Disney s big hit Alice Comedies and cartoons of Mickey and the gang, he moved his office to Burbank, California. There, Walt and his brother, Roy, came up with their most famous movies such as Cinderella, Snow White, and Alice in Wonderland. Now with two American amusement parks, three international parks, multiple cruise lines, multiple resorts, over five hundred films, and over thirty academy award, it s hard to not heard of Disney. Every boy or girl has at least seen or heard of Disney movies. It s such a big part of society today that it becomes influential in a kid s childhood. • 10. Geothermal Energy is the Solution to the Energy Crisis Essay Geothermal Energy: A Solution to the Energy Crisis Abstract So far, scientists have not found a successful substitute for fossil fuels that can handle both the large demand for energy and solve the global warming problem. I propose that geothermal energy is a clean, widely available, and renewable alternative to the usage of fossil fuels. In this paper, I will explain how use of geothermal resources can be energy efficient, environmentally clean, and cost effective. I believe that the US government should increase funding for geothermal energy research. This may be the solution to our present energy crisis and global warming. Introduction There is a call of action to solve today s energy crisis. What we need urgently is a clean, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fossil fuels (oil, coal, natural gas) take up about 80 % of total energy consumed. Fossil fuels cause pollution and global warming yet we continue to use them. Our demand for fossil fuels has become so great that according to current projections, Earth s reserves will be depleted within the next 200 years. But we do not actually have 200 years to wait. Our run away consumption of fossil fuel not only endangers our ability to meet our future energy needs but also the environment. Fossil fuels cause significant pollution and global warming. This in turn compromises wildlife habitats and can even lead to extinction of animal and plant species. By looking at new sources such as geothermal energy, we can move towards a source that is not extremely harmful and yet still effective. Geothermal Energy Geothermal energy is heat energy that is stored underneath Earth s surface. It is mainly found at volcanoes, hot springs, or geysers. Heat stored in the hot water and steam found at these locations is captured and can be used to heat buildings or generate electricity. This energy source is renewable because heat from the earth is continuously produced. To obtain energy, you must either use hot water or steam from the source. The most common way of capturing the energy from geothermal sources is to tap into naturally occurring hydrothermal convection systems where cooler water seeps into Earth s crust, is heated up, and then rises to the

In fact, conflict is the main purpose of how a story came to be without conflict, there will be no story. As quoted from Peder Hill (n.d.), Its the primary ingredient that weaves together all the other elements of a novel . However, conflictcan arise in a story in various forms and they alter the course of the story. For instance, a conflict of decision. What decision is made by the characters moves the story. This is called external conflict, which Rector (2002) defines as a struggle between a character and an outside force . Simon, for instance, battles with himself about the beast . When the discussion about the beast goes on in chapter five, Simon is hesitant on explaining about the beast. From his line maybe there is a beast (pg. 89), he struggles to explain to everyone what he thought the beast really is. Simon knows that the beast is not corporeal, but rather an evil within humankind. His conflict within himself regarding the beast s identity moves the story when he ventures out to search for the beast. In result, he stumbles into the Lord of the Flies, who confirms his knowledge about the beast that it is actually the evil within the boys. It also ends up in his death, when he wants to tell the boys about the real beast. As for Piggy, he tries very hard to gain everyone s approval, especially Ralph s. His desire for approval is apparent since the first chapter, when he asked for Ralph s name and expects Ralph to ask his in return (pg. 11). But it is more apparent in the fourth chapter, when Piggy suggests to Ralph that they build a sundial (pg. 64). Ralph s reaction towards Piggy s idea was out of pity, but Piggy misinterpreted it as friendliness and rejoiced at Ralph s smile. Piggy, however, did not seek Jack s approval, as he always retaliated Jack s abusive behaviour towards him. Jack kept on bullying Piggy physically punching him and broke his glasses in the fourth chapter and verbally
  • 12. Physical And Psychological Aspects Of A Monster My understanding of a monster when I began this semester was that a monster is an evil being who can have physical and psychological aspects that add to the evil. The most basic form of monster is physically unattractive and has general physical deformities. These deformities included fanged teeth, large claws, and super strength. Psychologically monsters behave recklessly because they do not abide by the social limitations that everyone else does. Monsters excel in disguising themselves from society and hiding in the shadows. They crave darkness to shelter them from societal duties. This craving is derived from either a mental illness or an innate sense to try out being evil. Monsters to me were those of fairy tales and scary movies such as werewolves and serial killers. The physical and mental attributes of monsters can be seen in the novelReason to Breathe by Rebecca Donovan. Physical attributes of a monsterare the first thing that draws my attention when reading a novel or watching a movie. The classic view of a monster is found in old novels or movies that deal with things such as Frankenstein or Dracula, and even zombies. The most terrifying in my brain though is the monster that hides from everyone because physically the being would not be recognized. Reason to Breathe is a novel that describes Emma, a girl who bears the weight of abuse and deals with it so her cousins can keep their mom, her aunt Carol. In the end, Emma wins her freedom from Carol. Carol is

Reflection Of The Past Ten Weeks A Reflection of the Past Ten Weeks in FYI 101 When I started college at Augustana in August and walked into my first day of FYI 101, bright and early on a Monday morning, I did not know what was in store for me to learn in the following ten weeks. Coming into college I could not write in a proper, college way. I did not know how to properly cite sources that I used. This included in text citations and work cited pages. I also would write every essay in a five or six paragraph format instead of writingmany shorter paragraphs. I finally did not know how to use commas or semicolons among many other grammar concepts. I also struggles with comprehending challenging passages. When I would read I would not understand what I was reading and would just annotate the main points that the article made by restating the point in the margins of the paper. Needless to say I learned a lot over the past ten weeks. One of the first pieces of reading that we read in FYI 101 was Plato s Allegory of the Cave . This was a passage that I particularly struggled with. When I read I could not understand what Plato was saying. Due to this I could not annotate the passage. I spent a lot of time reading and rereading the passage and eventually was able to start to understand the points that Plato was making. I was then able not only to annotate what the main points were but was also able to make connections to other pieces we have read through the term and notice literary elements in the work. For

In addition of the principle aim of the web that consists of an open access to information, the second generation of Web applications, Web 2.0 applications, has allowed for users to communicate effectively with each other. Hence, the web transformed from a web where most users were consumers passively viewing website (i.e. information) to a more active and participatory actors. Users are now consumers and contributors of information, so, the web has been transformed from a hypertext environment to a web of people environment that connects family, friends and colleagues enabling them to share different type of information. This paradigm has resulted to a new medium of communication known as User Generated Content (UGC) where users made together a substantial effort to publish and produce their own content in different ways and with various formats to enrich the web experience. This content can be produced with various formats that depends on the social media stream used, it cover (i) materials that users make available through blog, wiki and social media sharing services (e.g. YouTube , Instagram , etc); (ii) feedback such as comments, review, rates; (iii) and social networkdata including public profiles, social network structure and user interactions. RIP A Remix Manifesto RIP: A Remix Manifesto offers a convincing case for copyright reform raising the issues about the viscous control on the ownership of intellectual property against the free access to share ideas. Gaylor (2008) is passionate about the ridiculous copyright laws and their ongoing restrictive modifications in the USA that are demolishing the creativity of new ideas and innovations that these copyrightlaws were originally meant to protect. • 25. A Common Problem Today For Adolescent Christians A common problem today for adolescent Christians is the lack of intimacy with God, and not fully experiencing Christ in their lives. The solution to this problem can be found in the spiritual disciplines. Spiritual disciplines are practices that aid in transforming believers into the image of Christ, and help them to develop a more intimate relationship with Christ. They help to bring a Christian into the presence of God, and to bring them a portion of heaven. According to Isaac Ambrose, an English Puritan minister from the seventeenth century, spiritual disciplines are the vehicles to God. He said: ...the saints look upon duties (the Word, Sacraments, Prayers, etc.) as bridges to give them a passage to God, as boats to carry them into the bosom of Christ, as means to bring them into more intimate communion with their heavenly Father, and therefore are they so much taken with them (Schwanda 1). Ambrose argued that through spiritual disciplines, one could experience an intimate relationship with God. The spiritual disciplines are broken into three categories, inward, outward, and corporate. From these three categories, the three main focuses are meditation, service, and worship. Through the application of these three spiritual disciplines, the main goal is to enter a deeper, more intimate relation with Christ and to be shaped into the image of Christ. The first spiritual discipline is meditation. According to WordNet, meditation is the continuous and profound

In my essay, I will be talking about what it means to have a flag in the classroom, community service, and how to be a citizen of your town/city. My first main point is what it symbolizes to have a school flag in the classroom. I believe that every classroom, big or small, should have an American flag to support our country and be proud to live in it. This is one of the many ways to show that you service the people that have sacrificed their lives for us. The 50 stars represent the 50 states that are free because of them. The book does go much more in depth with the war than any other resource or letter, but there is similarities in everything in the book to any other info about World War 1. Looking from All Quiet on the Western Frontto actual happenings in the war you can bring them together and see the similarities in living as a soldier in the trenches, and how the men passed time during World War 1. Life for a soldier in the trenches in WW1 as described in actual letters and as described as in the book sounded very alike. In the book it talks about the human eating rats, trench foot and leaving the dead bodies lying on the ground just for something dry to walk on. Killing each separate louse is a tedious business when a man has hundreds. The little beasts are hard and the everlasting cracking with one s fingernails very soon becomes wearisome. (Remarque, 1929, p. 75) This is an example in the book that can be connected to real life is when Paul and all the other men are sitting around the fire picking lice out and burning them in a tin. Since then we have learned better than to be shy about such trifling immodesties. (Remarque, 1929 p. 8) In that sentence Paul is discussing the toilets, or latrines, saying how when he first started using the them they were nasty and it was embarrassing, but now he s comfortable with using them. I cannot bear to look at his hands, they are like wax. Under the nails is the dirt of the trenches, it shows through blue black like poison. (Remarque, 1929, p. 15) Paul describes the trench mud as poison, because it is. It caused men to lose limbs, feet and sometimes their lives because it caused gangrene. The rats here are particularly repulsive they are so fat the kind we call corpse rats. (Remarque, 1929, p. 102) The trenches could be very muddy and smelly. There were many dead bodies buried nearby and the latrines (toilets) sometimes overflowed into the trenches. Millions of rats infested the trenches and some grew as big as cats. There was also a big problem with lice that tormented the soldiers on a daily basis. (Heirs, 2014). In the article it

As briefly said before he improved the telescope. As to popular belief, Galileo did not in fact invent the telescope actually. A Dutch lens maker named Hans Lippershey invented the first one in 1608. He did this by creating a telescope that had a concave eyepiece aligned with a convex objective lens. His telescope could only magnify three time original object. Daimler is considered one of the most successful and profitable automotive companies across the globe. Founded in 1893 as the Daimler Motor Syndicate Ltd, its growth and expansion in the automotive sector has been facilitated by the need to meet the interests and needs of its key stakeholders (Barnard, 1998). The vehicles that are manufactured by the company are of high standard and the quality is top notch. Most of its customers are concerned with the satisfaction level that they achieve when they purchase the motor vehicles. The implementation of the luxurious car segment meant that the trend in the economy has considerably changed and there was need for improving the brand image and the superiority of the products offered. According to Barnard (1998), Daimler s merger with Chrysler was undertaken due to the need to expand its operations and initiatives across the globe. Chrysler is considered one of the smallest automobiles sectors when it is considered with the three biggest U.S. automakers, which includes Ford and General Motors.
