LGBT inequality is a prominent issue all around the world, but what is the extent of
LGBT inequality in the Middle East and how does it compare to the U.S.? To answer
this question, in the Middle East, members of the LGBT community face extreme

hate crimes, and discrimination from people whose homophobic views have been
shaped by strict cultural and religious ideals, while in America, LGBT inequality is

society emphasizes the value of religion and traditional gender roles while in
America, there is generally more individuality and freedom of expression, but it is

in recent years, but many LGBT people are still fighting for equal rights or even for
survival.
Gender segregation is still common in the Middle East and both genders are
expected to fulfill their designated roles within society. There is a lot of pressure
for both genders to marry and to not do so is considered social disaster . Arranged
marriages are not uncommon, especially among the more traditional families
(Whitaker) and in this relationship, men are generally considered the active partners
while their wives are the passive partners (Tolino 5). These ideas are prominent
throughout society in the Middle East and create problems for individuals who do
not conform to their assigned roles, specifically members of the LGBT community.
LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, although all gender and
sexual minorities are considered part of this community (Human Rights Watch 69).
LGBT individuals face struggles all around the world, but their problems are more
pronounced in the Middle East, where the concept of homosexuality is vastly different

Identity
Identity is something we search for, something we want to find out about
ourselves. We want to know what we are here for and what s our purpose. Identity
is the way one sees themselves and our identity is all we have that s why we protect
it and always are trying to make ours better than the others. I believe college is a time
where we find our identity, maybe we have an idea on what it is going to be and
sometimes it takes us many years to figure it out. In Daniel Marks experience his

Daniels before was very rough, he was in trouble a lot. He said he felt like a failure
to his father s standards. He enjoys partying very much, this has lead to him being a
poor student with a GPA below a 2.0. His study habits are very poor but he is
planning on going to college. His advisor told him he would fail out if he didn t
change his ways. After hearing all about daniel s story I would categorize him into
the Diffusion area. This is because he is just simply doesn t care, he lacks
motivation and is only doing enough to barely get by. I can avoid all of these
things by sticking to the things I ve been doing and to adjust and use the strategies

In the first stanza, the speaker states that she is not cute according to society s
standards, and that women want to know what her secret is. She tells them that her
physical aspects, such as the curl of her lips help make her into a phenomenal
woman. Maya Angelou plays with the word phenomenal : it can mean something
along the essence of phenomena, being perceived by the senses; or to mean
remarkable or extraordinary (Bloom 44). The second stanza deals with how men
react to her femininity. Angelou uses the only metaphor in the poem, a hive of
honey bees to show how the speaker attracts men. In the third stanza, there is a
slight change. Instead of expressing the speaker s physical qualities, Angelou makes
known the speaker s inner mystery, which also resides in her physical traits. The last
stanza has a definite change in direction. The self image, full of glory, inner pride,

In the book A Separate Peace by John Knowles there are several biblical archetypes.
These biblical archetypes give the reader an insight into the deeper meaning of the
text. This adds a greater significance to the story, and gives the reader a greater
understanding. Some examples of these biblical archetypes are the garden of Eden,
baptism, and Judas and Jesus. The garden of Eden is a paradise, in which there is the
tree of the knowledge of good in evil. Adam and Eveboth live in Eden, and God tells
them not to eat the apples that grow on the tree. In the beginning, Adamand Eve are
innocent, but Eve is persuaded to eat an apple form the tree by a serpent, and Eve
convinces Adam to eat the fruit too. This causes them both to gain knowledge and
lose their innocence, this is known as the fall of man. Next, baptism is a ritual of
sprinkling water onto a person s forehead, or immersing them in water. This is
supposed to purify the person getting baptized. It is also used for regeneration.
Baptism s are also used to initiate or admit someone into a church. Finally, Judas
was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus, but he ended up betraying Jesus. While
Jesus was pure and innocent, Judas was immoral and not innocent, and betrayed
someone who he pretended was his friend. The connection between these stories and
the book give the reader a better understanding of the book. The biblical archetypes
in A Separate Peace include the garden of Eden, baptism, and Judas and Jesus.
