The Current Rating System in the United States Essay

The Current Rating System in the United States
The current content rating system in use for film, the MPAA, is the only content rating system
that is legally enforced in the United States. For this reason, the system has caused controversy.
Many have claimed that the system is unbalanced, as the MPAA bases the level of appropriate
content for all people in the United States off of the opinions of an unidentified council of people
over the age of forty (Jenkins). The stance on how the system s effectiveness is a relative stance,
however, the secondhand effects of the system are obvious and existing today. Decisions have been
made by film distribution companies that have affected the way films with objectionable ... Show

This type of butterfly effect that the rating system has on films is evident: the attempt to block off
certain age limits to harsh types of content has ultimately put pressure on artists to limit types of
ways to tell a story in mainstream film. In the interview with filmmaker Kirby Dick on this subject,
the interviewer asks him about the topic of sexuality in film, MPAA s stance on sexuality, and how
Dick represented these ideas presented in his film. Dick stated,
Allison Anders makes the very interesting point that in some ways the ratings system is more
restrictive of sexuality now than it was in the Sixties and Seventies. I think there are a number of
reasons. Perhaps to some degree society has shifted slightly. Film studios were making some
money from films that were more sexually provocative, like Midnight Cowboy. But, then again,
you have to realize that the studios benefit from the system s coming down hard on films,
especially on independent films about adult sexuality. To begin with, who makes those films?
Independents and foreign filmmakers make those films, and that s the studios competition. So they
restrict it. It s not much competition, but it does make a difference. Jt also makes it appear like the
Rating Jioard is doing its job as censors, as raters, doing their job, and doesn t pay attention to the
fact that all these films about violence are slipping through unencumbered by a rating. And the
studio filmmakers are kept

Conflict Management Styles Among Corporate Executives
Choosing a topic and problem for a signature assignment which is very close to a research topic
could be a hurdle. It requires good literature review which is derived by tapping and evaluating
previous researchers efforts and expertise. A potential research study on Conflict Management
Styles among Corporate Executives in Developing Countries Nigeria a Case Study is considered
for a signature assignment. Conflictis inevitable and exists everywhere. In organizational system,
conflict and methods of conflict managementinfluences different groups (employees, management
team and executives). Conflicts are realities of life and can be defined as a situation of competition
in which the parties involved are quite aware of the incompatibility of future condition whereby
each party wishes to occupy a position that is incompatible with the wishes of the other (Olu
Adesubomi, 2013, p. 2). They have no boundaries. They occur whether we like it or not, especially
when there is disagreement and misunderstanding which stands as major key characteristics of
human relationships. The relationship could be domestic, national, or international (Spiroska,
2014). Furthermore, conflicts happen when people are incompatible. In the organizational setting,
conflict could arise due to failure of the employer, not honoring certain agreed bargaining. Henry
(2009) indicated that if the workers right and prerogative is not appropriated rightly, it could cause
conflict; such workers

How Does Gary Paulsen Use Repetition In Hatchet
The author, Gary Paulsen, uses at least 3 literary techniques in his novel Hatchet: repetition,
imagery, and personification. Gary Paulsen uses repetition to express Brian s thoughts. In the
beginning of Hatchet, he repeats the word alone to show Brain alone in the woods after the plane
crash having no one or nothing except for the hatchet. Through the middle and ending of Hatchet,
Gary Paulsenkeeps repeating the word tomorrow. In the middle of the novel, he uses the word
tomorrow to show how Brian thinks the more things he does tomorrow the more things he would
get done. In the end he uses the word because he is still thinking about getting saved and go home
to his normal life. The second literary technique that is used by Gary

An Explanation Of Why Sociologists Are Interested On Class
Class is important as it can determine various aspects that will have a significant impact and
influence on how people s lives are shaped. Feminists have argued for other things to be included
such as social divisions to show how they intersect with class. Economic inequalities can have an
impact on class as they can determine a person s status, wealth, income and lifestyle. Class is
important as social inequalities exists amongst the rich and poor. Important social factors include
poverty, health and education. A person s identity is just as important as their class. People may
face discrimination due to their identity, whether that may be due to their gender, age, ethnicity or
disability. Social mobility is where people are in a different social classnow from which they were
brought up in. However sociologists argue that class is less important in contemporary society
today than it once used to be.
The purpose of this essay is to provide an explanation on why sociologists are interested in class.
This assignment will define what class is and to what extent class matters. Other social divisions
will be explored in this assignment to show how they intersect with class. The social divisions
which intersect with class which will be discussed include economic and social inequalities, social
mobility and identity. The beliefs from well known theorists, Karl Marx and Max Weber who
disagreed on the nature of class, will also be included to support the main points which are

Erp as Software as a Service (Saas) for Smes
ERP as Software as a Service *(*SaaS*)* for SMEs Table of Contents Page Abstract The main
barriers for implementing ERP systems in SMEs were constraints in terms of resources and
information, implementation time escalations, poorly defined organisational structures, weak
formalisation of procedures or processes, unclear and also confused understanding amongst the
employees and management. There are various methods to overcome the barriers of
implementing ERP solutions in SMEs. This include coming up with a realistic value adding
processes required to be incorporated in the proposed ERP system, providing effective education

Essay on Sociological Autobiography
My life started with my long and hard birth on July 14, 1993. I came into the world with a large
scream and was immediately placed into some sort of category. The doctors and nurses took a
quick look at me, and pronounced me as a girl. This social label of being a girl was now my
gender, which is something I had no say in. Every since that very moment in time where my
parents were told I was a girl, I have been treated according to my gender. This meant that my
parents automatically dressed me in pink, bought me dollhouses and kitchen sets and threw me
Barbie themed birthday parties. Since I was surrounded my whole entire life by these things, it
was almost like second nature to think and act the way that I did and still do. My... Show more

I became intrigued and wanted to play with his toys because they became so much more
interesting then mine. When my grandmother saw that I was playing with trucks and enjoying
it, she quickly came over and grabbed them out of my hands, giving them back to the little boy I
had taken them from. She then explained to me that trucks were for boys not girls, and I should
stick to using my pink shovel and bucket set to make nice sandcastles. I didn t understand at that
point what the big issue was, it was just toys that were fun to play with, but I agreed with my
grandmother because I didn t want to get into trouble and from then on stuck to focusing on
making sandcastles. I quickly forgot about the trucks, and never again did I think to play with
anything remotely like that. Little did I know it, but that was one of the first examples of
gender roles that I had been exposed too. Growing up, my label of a female has given me both
advantages and disadvantages. Having a younger brother has given me a clearer view of how
parents and family members socialize the both of us to act male or female. Because I am a
female, it was expected of me from a very early age to attend school and university. There was
never really a choice, it was either that or go straight into work, which was the less pleasing
option. However my brother is just expected to get his high school diploma and go work for my
father and take over our family business, which

Putting a 21st Century Twist on the Past
In this essay I will argue that my practice is contemporary by showing 21st century influences. I
will do this by discussion of themes and practices of other artists that I am interested in, evaluating
the issues they address. In particular Francis Alys, George Shaw and Social Realism.
I first realised my interest in manual labour, menial jobs and cycle of working, when I was
travelling, and this influenced my work. Whilst visiting the Yves Saint Laurent gardens in
Marrakech there was an employee of the gardens sweeping the flower petals into his grasp, whilst
more constantly fell. This time consuming action initially interested me as absurd, however after

From taking the outsider role he was able to see situations differently than if he was part of
them. I feel the same within my practice; I am a keen observer of people and always find my
most inspired and passionate ideas originate from just watching a situation. In Placing Pillows
Alys uses his role of observer to his advantage. He can see the lack of repair and action after the
1985 Mexico City earthquake. He reacts to by placing pillows within the broken windows. He is
able to use such a simple thing that becomes such a strong and political statement.
In the world today we are subjected to roles and expectations, we are all expected to mature and
earn a living, when this doesn t happen it is frowned upon. For example not having a career or a
consistent income is thought to be out of the ordinary almost not conforming lesser you as a
person. An enthusiast for symbols and allegories, Alyss casts the world in a lighthearted way
where it is easy for the audience to appreciate what is being said. Paradox of Praxis 1 (Sometimes
Doing Something Leads to Nothing) where he pushes a block of ice around Mexico City taking
no steps to stop it from melting to a pool of water pulls similarities to the myth of Sisyphus, a Greek
mythological figure punished for the rest of his life to push a bolder up a hill only for it to fall

How Stress Affects The Body
Stress is absolutely affects our body and blood pressure. The stress is temporarily increasing the
blood pressure by causing the heart to beat faster and the blood vessels to narrow. Stress affects
the blood pressure because the body produces a surge of hormones when the person is in a stressful
situation and the hormones increase the bloodpressure. The body produces a flow of hormones when
the person is in a stressful situation. When the stressreplies happen rarely, the body can improve

The renin angiotensin aldosterone system controls blood pressure and fluid balance in the body.
Activation of the renin angiotensin aldosterone system causes increased sodium retention by the
kidneys, which leads to reduced water loss into the urine and therefore blood volume expansion. If
the RAAS is abnormally active, blood pressure will be too high.RAAS activation occurs during
heart failure, which leads to fluid retention in the body. When the plasma sodium concentration is
lower than normal or the renal blood flow is compact, the juxtaglomerular cells in the kidneys
convert prorenin into renin, which is then unseen directly into the circulation. Plasma renin then
cuts a short, 10 amino acid long, and peptide off a plasma protein known as angiotensinogen. The
short peptide is known as angiotensin I. Angiotensin I is then converted, by the removal of 2 amino
acids, to form an octapeptide known as angiotensin II, by the enzyme angiotensin converting
enzyme found in the lung capillaries. Angiotensin II is a potent vaso active peptide that causes
arterioles to constrict, resulting in increased arterial blood pressure. Angiotensin II also stimulates
the secretion of the hormone aldosterone from the adrenal cortex. Aldosterone causes the tubular
epithelial cells of the kidneys to

An artifact has been found that pushes the timeline of the arrival of Native Americans in North
Carolina back 4,000 years. Kaisar Porris, 1 Eno Blvd. in rural Orange County, has been a river
scavenger for 45 years. Last March he found a dugout sticking out of the Eno River after a heavy
rain. A dugout is a canoe made out of a hollowed tree trunk. River scavenging is usually used to
find items that can be used or sold for profit; however, Porris was particularly interested in
archeology. Porris contacted Kevin Bystryski, 39, professor of classics at the University of North

On Compassion Analysis Essay
Compassion at Play
Are people born with a complete quandary when it comes to compassion or is it something that
has always been there? Barbara Lazear Ascher, born in 1946, writes, On Compassion. Having
lived in New York City, Ascher is able to take first hand examples from the city to show the
affection people have towards each other. Ascher is able to illustrate that compassion is
something that has to be taught because of the adversity at people s heels by including tone,
persuasive appeals, and the mode of comparing and contrast in her essay, On Compassion. The
tone of Ascher s essay can best be described as thoughtful and reflective. Ascher is able to achieve

readers to feel compassion towards the victims. She contributes to pathos in her quote, The man s
grin is less the result of circumstance than dreams or madness (46). The audience feels for this
young man and the tough circumstances he is going through. The man is dressed so poorly that he
is being mistaken as a mad man by the spectators. The readers instantly feel empathy for this man in
the form of compassion. Ascher appeals to logos in order to define compassion in her quote, For
the ancient Greeks, drama taught and reinforced compassion within a society (48). Ascher includes
the real facts about the Greeks in her essay. When she includes these facts, it enables the readers to
validate that compassion is something that is taught, whether it is through plays or having to see
someone in a worse condition than they are, compassion is still attained. Ascher utilizes examples
in her essay, On Compassion to show the pity people are taking on the ones who are in a
painstaking position. The author supplies her essay with the mode of comparing and contrasting in

LH Mouse Model
Comparative analysis of LH levels and pulse frequency in mouse models
Abstract:
Estrogen is the primary female sex hormone and is responsible for the development and regulation
of the female reproductive system and of secondary sex characteristics. Produced primarily by the
ovaries, estrogen binds to and activates estrogen receptor beta (ER) a nuclear receptor. Estrogen
plays an important role in the hypothalamic pituitary gonadal (HPG) axis by acting on gonadotropin
releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons located within the hypothalamus. In females, a cyclic reversal
of estrogen feedback produces a positive feedback loop at both the hypothalamic and pituitary
levels. This is coupled with an increase in pituitary sensitivity to GnRH, which produces the
massive surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) that triggers ovulation. However, LH is not only
secreted during this surge it is secreted in a pulsatile manner otherwise. This paper will focus on
the implications on LH pulsatility by knocking out ER, as well as by removing the ovaries.

In both the male and female, the coordinated actions of hormones from the hypothalamus, anterior
pituitary, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Estrogen has a bimodal effect on the hypothalamus with both inhibitory and stimulatory influences
on GnRH secretion. The stimulatory effect of estrogen is seen at the end of the follicular phase
where estrogen triggers the preovulatory GnRH surge. The ability of estrogen to induce a surge
declines with age in female rodents and women. This appears to be due in large part to a decrease
in estrogen induction of GnRH neurons, particularly in rodents. The inhibitory effect of estrogen on
GnRH secretion and GnRH gene expression has been show in in in vivo studies indicating that
estrogen inhibits GnRH pulse amplitude in the early follicular and luteal phase of the

Self-lessness And The Existence Of Selflessness In Today
Despite many people fighting for a righteous cause ultimately making unethical decisions, Vigny s
assertion that heroes do not exist is false. Heroes today display aspects of selflessness and portray
themselves as role models for others. Modern heroes exist today through the individuals who put
others before themselves. Selfless people can be defined as heroes because they are completing acts
for the benefit of others first before themselves. Furthermore, this can be seen through people such
as philanthropists, and volunteers to help the needy. For example, individuals who volunteer to help
with the cleanup and rescue during Hurricane Harvey are displaying the heroic characteristic of
selflessness. This illustrates that, without these volunteers, it would take a lengthy amount of time
to recover from natural disasters, resulting in the preventable endangerment of citizens harmed. In
addition, selflessness can be seen as a heroic characteristic in the epic poem, Beowulf. Just as
volunteers risk their lives to help the needy, Beowulf, the epic heroof the piece of literature risked
his life by diving into the lake of Grendel s mother to face the turmoil of fight , and attempt to kill
the demon (line 1469). The selflessness of Beowulf further enhances the continued existence of
heroes by showing that selflessness has continued to be a heroic characteristic from primordial
times to today . In addition to selflessness being a key characteristic found in heroes today,

The Life Insurance Industry
Modern man tries to protect himself and his possessions against many risks like illness, accidents,
death, theft and liabilities. These interests can be protected in various ways:
(a)He can take preventative measures to limit loss such as wearing a safety belt while driving a
vehicle or installing smoke detectors in a factory; or
(b)He can save money and with time build up a private fund; or
(c)Co operate with other legal subjects to collectively cover losses that have been incurred.
However, in the above three scenarios, protective measures are not adequate protection. The
solution to these problems is found in a formal insurance. Insurance regulation is a dynamic, ever
evolving to achieve an appropriate balance between providing adequate consumer protection and
allowing them to gain maximum returns. Given that insurers and the products being offered change
over time, it is vital for the regulatory framework to keep pace with dynamics of the Life Insurance
Industry.
This study explores areas where the life insurance industry has changed over time through different
product offerings, globalization, evolving technology, and changes in the economic environment of
Discovery Vitality Life. The study provides a framework to assist regulators in assessing which
changes have been successful, which need improvement, and what needs to be addressed in the
future.

Sources of Stress Experienced by International Students...
As the world becomes increasingly globalized and interconnected, there is an imperative need for
every student in this generation to be exposed and to be prepared for this rapidly changing world.
Globalization sets the platform for a competitive environment, which challenges a country to
increase their level of efficiency, promote innovation, and improve its overall standard of living.
One of the ways that value added learning could be incorporated in students learning is through the
dissemination of a rich multicultural classroom, whereby local students are interacting, exchanging
knowledge, and building quality relationships with international students. However, this requires
foreign students to travel or migrate to another country differing from their own for the purpose of
furthering their education and/or other personal reasons such as seeking a better quality of life,
searching to advance their career/life opportunities, or just simply looking for a change in their
environment. Although cross cultural interaction is highly valuable, relocating to a new country
and being isolated from relatives and friends can be a source of stress, anxiety, and confusion to
international students, which can induce a real challenge to them for studying in another country
such as the United States. This extensive qualitative research will identify sources of stress
generally experienced by international college students living in the United States and their coping
and adjustment

Advantages Of Privatization Of Water
Introduction
The case discussed in this paper is that of whether water should be privatized or be a public asset.
Nestle s chairman and former CEO Peter Brabeck states that water is not a right and it should be
privatized as it is raw materials.
Water is needed for everything, and all human beings and animals need it in order to live.
Privatizing water is just another way of stealing. Water cannot be privatized and owned by private
corporations whose only concern is to increase their profits.
Counterarguments
There are several counterarguments from proponents of privatization of water. The proponents of
water privatization state that by having the private sector in charge of the distribution would make
the process more efficient than the public sector doing so. There s no specific study and this cannot
be predicted accurately as this has not happened previously. However, the distribution system has
already been set up by the public sector and also the public sector has been handling the operations
for years which equates to more experience in the field than other private companies would have.
Another argument proponents of water privatization have is that they believe that it would cost
less if the private sector took charge of the distribution of water. There s a wrong idea that shifting
the burden from the public sector to the private sector taxpayers would pay less as the company
would repair, maintain and upgrade the infrastructure. However, that is not the case. For

The Colonialization Of Italy And The Colonization Of Libya
Italy, like most countries, conquered other countries for the purpose of benefitting their economic
and political needs. According to Martin Moore, What in effect is taking place is a State financed
and officially organised mass migration of Europeans, from an over crowded temperate Europe, to
a barren non European country overseas (Moore 1). However, Italywas the last country to explore
and conquer the land in Africa, which limited the amount of land available to them. This was shown
in the colonization of Libya. Libya was not a country that was ideal to colonize because of their
stationary civilization and monotheistic religion. Regardless, Italy was determined to conquer this
land for the benefit of the natives and Italy itself. Carlo Schanzer writes, In short, Italy wishes to
govern her African colonies by introducing her surplus man power among backward populations
and integrating the two, never by unnecessarily substituting the former for the latter (Schanzer 448).
Italy intended to do this through focusing on giving justice, order, hygiene, communications, and
education to Libya. In order to further their goal, Italy wanted to focus on the sanitation issue
facing Libya. According to the Italian Colonial Policy in North Africa, it states, Italy colonizes not
only with her sword, however, but also with the aid of her doctors and her teachers (Schanzer 449).
Statesman, Francesco Crispi, built many Italian schools and hospitals on the Mediterranean coast,

Freedom Of Speech In American Schools
Freedom of Speech in American Schools Perhaps the greatest cardinal sin that can be committed
by our nation as a people is the restriction of free speech among our youth. If you take away
freedom of speech, you are already chipping away at their freedom of thought, freedom of
creativity, freedom of life. Despite what people want our youth to believe, everyone is free to
thought and expression as suits them best. If you force students to withhold their thoughts they
begin to learn they have nothing to add to the society, that their ideals and opinions are wrong. Of

As previously stated, students are often expected to simply go along with what they re told, to
focus on studies and their future run of the mill citizenship, and to above all avoid breaking off
from the mold. Students and teachers both have little freedom to bring up unpopular opinions in
school (Knowledge). Without the liberty of your words, you lose the liberty of your ideas. No
matter what, the ultimate goal of the public school system is not to teach you. It is to shape you
into what it wants and then to scrape away your independent thought. Schools have been
notorious throughout the years for their ability to pull your thought out of you, to leave you a

Bobs Her Hair and Sandra Cisneros short story Eleven. Bernice Bobs Her Hair portrays a girl
willing to give up her unique character to form a new and attractive personality from the help from
those around her which she hopes will make her more mentally attractive. Furthermore, Sandra
Cisneros Eleven captures a girl emotionally unsettled who observes in herself that while she turns
eleven, she also portrays emotions from her past ages of ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three,
two, and one through a dilemma caused by her misunderstanding teacher. Both authors incorporate
comparable and contrasting point of view styles... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Comparably, in Bernice Bobs Her Hair this problem also lies great since the entirety of its story
Fitzgerald writes in third person. Third person provides an impeccable description of every
situation, however, without shifting to any other point of view, Fitzgerald disadvantages the
reader in obtaining a more personal view of one of the main characters. For example, at the time
where Bernice is about to cut off her cousin Marjorie s hair it states, She was by the bedside now,
very deliberate and calm. She acted swiftly. Bending over she found one of the braids of
Marjorie s hair, followed it up with her hand to the point nearest the head, and then holding it a
little slack so that the sleeper would feel no pull, she reached down with the shears and severed
it. Without the use of first or second person, the reader lacks in attaining Bernice s thoughts
leading up to her drastic action and cutting off Marjorie s hair. Overall, through both stories use of
one main point of view, reader s lack attaining a different perspective of Fitzgerald s Bernice Bobs
Her Hair and Cisneros Eleven.
Second, Bernice Bobs Her Hair more effectively uses narration in its story since Fitzgerald uses an
omniscient narrative presence so that the reader can get a glimpse of all the characters thoughts and
feelings. This overall better use of narration reoccurs throughout the book such as at the time that
Rachel asks Charley s opinion whether or not she should bob her hair by

The Two Types Of Symptoms Of Parkinson s Disease
The Two Types of Symptoms of Parkinson s Disease
Parkinson s disease (PD), a degenerative nervous system disorder, is more common every day,
yet it is still a mystery on what causes it. More than a million Americans have been diagnosed
with PD and every year there are 60,000 new cases. Affecting older people, it is the second most
common disorder and the condition is expected to increase as the aging population increases. PD
essentially is the loss of dopamine producing neurons. The increase in research has led to a wide
range of possibilities to the causes involving both genetic and environmental factors. There are two
different types of symptoms: motor and non motor.
The diagnosis of Parkinson s disease can be challenging as the symptoms that are exhibited can
also be symptoms of another neurodegenerative disorder (Gazewood 2013). There are no biological
markers (tests or screenings) available for PD but researchers are working to develop an accurate
one (PDF 2016).
The cause of Parkinson s disease is unknown but it is thought to be linked to combined effects of
genetic factors and environmental factors. There is a greater risk of having Parkinson s disease
if someone in the family has been diagnosed with it. The genes linked to PD are SNCA, LRRK2,
PARK2, and PINK1 (Lill et al. 2012). PD is also more common in non Hispanic whites and in
males (Van Den Eeden 2003). The environmental factors are pesticide exposure, occupational
exposure, cigarette smoking or dietary factors

The Safety Of Car Companies
Car companies can show the world they care about unfortunate back over accidents by willingly
adding rear view cameras to all cars sold. If all car manufactures did this, they will be showing
their consumers that they are aware that there is a major issue of children and the elderly
getting injured by these preventable accidents as well as show everyone they are willing to do
whatever they can to prevent these types of accidents from happening further. If car companies
are able to set their greed aside and look at the number of children s lives that could be saved if
all vehicles were required to have rear view cameras come standard in them it would create a
higher demand for all vehicles as well as show the world that these companies care more about
preventing accidental tragedies rather than making a profit. It s very important and should soon
become a basic requirement for all cars in the United States to have back up cameras.
Most car related accidents that happen directly to children under the age of 5 are known as back
over accidents. A back over sounds pretty self explanatory, and we all assume people would make
sure they always looked in their rear view mirrors before reversing however; it only takes a second
for a child to crawl behind a car into a driver s blatant blind spot. Back over accidents are when a
car literally drives over a person as it is reversing. 1,200 children under 15 who were killed since

Global Warming And The Current Energy Source
Problem with our current energy source Today, though renewable energy sources exist, fossil
fuels are still very prominent in supplying us with the everyday energy that we need. One of the
biggest problems our world suffers today is the mistreatment of our environment, as seen by
global warming and pollution which we face today. Though there are many factors influencing
pollution, the following reasons are the most energy focused and are considered by many as the
largest causes of our environmental problems: o Exhaust from Combustion Engines o The
burning of coal and other fossil fuels to produce energy o Petroleum, the major source of energy
for vehicles Transportation related green house emissions are currently the fastest increasing
contributor to the green house effect. Earth s natural green house gases is what keeps it warm,
but the effect that causes global is caused to human s affecting and accelerating the effect through
the burning of fossil fuels, hence global warming . However, this not only affects us, but also eco

environment. As well, acid rain can be caused by the release of emissions from factories, vehicles,
etc. In turn, once again affecting our eco system in a negative manner. Out of fossil fuels, there is
no positive effect that comes with our current mass production of energy. Oil will theoretically

Memorial Day weekend, Ellicott City, Maryland, which sits just outside of the beltway,

search for survivors has just begun. Two waves of intense flooding hit the town unexpectedly, and
with little warning. The town is a quaint little area with cute shops and storefronts, which sits in a
valley, and the main street cuts a swath between two higher vistas. Several storms had been
forecast earlier that day, and heavy rain was expected, but no one could have predicted such
devastation, in such a short amount of time. This is the second massive flash flood to hit this area

Guided Tissue Regeneration Essay
1) define and explain the concept of Guided tissue regeneration(in detail) (GTR)
According to the Glossary of Periodontal Terms 4th Edition, Guided tissue regeneration is defined
as Procedures attempting to regenerate lost periodontal structures through differential tissue
response.
The concept of Guided tissue regeneration is centered on placing physical barriers to block the
apical migration of the gingival connective tissue and epithelium cells of the flap, while allowing
the inward migration of periodontal ligament cells on the exposed root surface. This allows
periodontal regeneration to occur. Physical barriers also protect the blood clot during healing and
preserve space for the growth of a new periodontal apparatus.

In guided tissue regeneration, we are excluding connective tissue and epithelial, while allowing
PDL cells to inhabit the surface of the root and allowing bone cell to grow into defect region. On
the other hand, in guided bone regeneration, we are excluding only connective tissue to allow bone

The basic concept for guided bone regeneration includes placing physical barriers to protecting the
blood clot, maintaining the blood supply to the defect area, releasing growth factors, and isolating
the bone defect to allow access for bone cells to cause bone regeneration.

Comparison Of Cormac Mccarthon In KnoxvilleSummer 1915
The city of Knoxville, Tennessee, located in the Smokey Mountains, was established in 1792, and
was named after Henry Knox, president Washington s Secretary of war. Not only is this city located
in the Smokies, but it also houses many famous attractions such as the Knoxville Zoo, the
Tennessee theatre, old historic Knoxville, and the Sunsphere. Many authors came from this city, and
among these are Cormac Mccarthy, who wrote Suttree in May, 1979, and James Agee, who wrote
Knoxville: Summer 1915 in 1957. Both authors relayed the tone of their passages well, a communal
tone for Agee and venomous for Mccarthy, but only one expressed their tone the best. This author
was Mccarthy who established his tone, venomous, through his use of diction throughout the
excerpt.
The tone of Knoxville:Summer,1915 by Agee is communal. This is shown where Agee states,
...that of the father of the families, each in his space of lawn...the hoses were set very much
alike...the sound therefore was pitched much alike...it is habitual to summer nights, and is of the
great deal of noise..but the men by now one by one have silenced their hoses... The quote supports
the topic sentence by showing how the whole community started and stopped watering their grass
at about the same time. The excerpt also shows how they worked like clockwork and were always
in sync with one another. Another piece of text that also supports the tone of communalism is
where Agee states, There were good friends among the grown

The Scorch Trials Betrayal Quotes
The Scorch Trials 356 526 For my independent reading novel, I read The Scorch Trials by James
Dashner. The novel was fast paced and very entertaining. In this particular section (356 526), a
major conflict that was existent throughout was Teresa s betrayal towards Thomas. The author
states, That was it. He d officially and completely lost any trace of doubt. Teresa had turned
against him. Or maybe she had never really been on his side (Dashner 419). This quote
demonstrates the amount of betrayal Thomas must have felt. Teresa was his best friend, so the
dishonestly hit Thomas hard. This part made me feel really sad because Thomas had so much
trust in her, and considered her as one of his bestest friends. Being stabbed in the back is an
unpleasant sentiment; however having a really close friend or a love interest stab you in the back
can have a very destructive outcome.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author states, I told you to trust me, she answered. I told you that bad, bad things would
happen to you. But the bad stuff was all an act. She smiled then, and it was so pretty Thomas
longed to find a way to forget what she d done (449). This quote shows that Teresa truly did not
betray Thomas, but the effects of the Betrayal were still left upon Thomas. I think the
relationship between Thomas and Teresa is interesting because Teresa was not actually trying to
hurt Thomas but instead help him. However, Thomas feelings were damaged, and he was hurt.
This relates to the world around me because sometimes the people who are extremely close to
you have to lie or seem to lie for the benefit of my own feelings. For example, I feel like my

Informed Decision Making
Data is very important and critical to any organisation, so is in the telecommunication industries.
Information that can be easily used must be available so that the decisions makers within an
industry can make informed decisions based on visible facts projected by the data available. If this
is not the case, decision making processes can become extremely challenging and, in some cases,
impossible. The flow of information within an organization is critical to the success of that
organization (Davenport Prusak, 1998). Organizations struggle in collecting data, retrieving
information and making decisions based on the extracted information. A decision making process
consists of making judgments based on the qualitative data. There are several different types of
systems like Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and Enterprise Resource Planning
(ERP), which are being used by organizations to make decision processes. These systems have
progressed tremendously in the last few years by making large amounts of information accessible
using data marts and data warehouses (Wixom Watson, 2001). The above mentioned systems and
many more that are not mentioned above allow managers to analyse data depending on the business
requirements, to make better informed decisions. These systems have made the decision making
processes easy to a certain point, when used properly. If this system are not used effectively, they
can prevent optimization of the decision making process. Humans are the once who make decisions

The Heart Of A Human
The heart of a human is a vital internal organ consists of cardiac muscles, which pump and circulate
blood contained oxygen, hormones and necessary nutrients throughout the body. Heart rate is the
amount of poundings of the heart per unit of time, usually in beats per minute (bpm). The heart rate
can change due to the body s physical needs including oxygen absorption and carbon dioxide
excretion. The normal resting heart rateof an adult human ranges from 60 to100 beats per minute.
During sleep, the heart can beat slower in the range of 40 50 beats per minute, which considered
normal. (Wikipedia, 2015)
From the initial observations, heart rates tend to vary from times to times especially with different
activities such as standing, running and lying down. The purpose of this experiment is to identify
what, if any, relationship exists between human s heart rates with the different intensity levels of
any physical exertion.
If a subject is exposed to different physical activity intensity levels for the same amount of time
with the heart rate recorded in beats per one minute. Then, the subject s heart rate will significantly
increase in relation to the higher intensity degrees of any physical exertion.
The exercises and even the anticipations of increasing physical activities can trigger the response of
autonomic nervous system to produce a more appropriate suite of physiological changes that
prompt the body for the exercise.

Since its grand entry in the 19th century, baseball has evolved to be one of the most popular sport

School Safety And Security Has Been An Issue On Many...
Beginning at the turn of the century, school safety and security has been an issue on many
administrators minds. There have been over one hundred and forty school shootings since the
turn of the century and the whole country is on watch. The most recent event at Sandy Hook
made the citizens of America plead with the government for stricter laws, and safer schools. Is
the Government doing enough to provide the right schools with the right resources? In April
1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked into Columbine high school and opened fire. The

Going To High School
It was eighth grade year and the time came to decide what school I would be attending for the
next four years at the high school level. At the time, I was attending a small catholic elementary
school, Regina Coeli, where there were only twenty students in my class. There was no high
school to directly advance to from Regina Coeli, once you finished your eighth grade year you
split off from everyone else and were forced to choose the high schoolin which you would attend.
Who knew going to high school was going to be a significant change for me environmentally and
academically.
The majority of my friends that I spent all of my childhood years growing up with decided to go

the other two schools it made my decision much more difficult. I was stuck between the two and
it was one of the most difficult decisions I ve ever had to make in my life. Ever since I was a kid

world. First I will cover a little bit of its background, and achievements. Then I will move onto
the game itself, going over how it works to a little bit of strategy. Lastly I ll wrap up with my
experiences with the game. Stated on the blue orange web site, the company founded by Gobblets
maker, the concept of Gobblet was born sometime in the late 90 s. More impressive is the amount

Two players may play, each one choosing one set of pieces, black or white. On a players turn
they can move a piece from either their stacks or on the board, to a tile on the board. The feature
that gives the games its name, is the ability to gobble up pieces. This can be done by a player
just putting a larger piece of his, onto any piece smaller on the board. Who knew such a tiny
feature could turn a easy game of tic tak toe into a memory game of strategy. Now allow me to
impart my knowledge of this game to you. The first thing you must realize in Gobblet is that, in
reality, you are not working to set up one row of four. Instead you have to be setting up multiple
rows at a time. My three year old can see when I ve got three pieces in a row, who ever your
playing with will see it to. There are multiple ways of going about this. We will proceed from the

Capital Punishment Was Abolished By Harold Wilson
Capital Punishment was abolished under Harold Wilson s Labour government in 1969 (Manton.K,
2011, P.16) in the United Kingdom, but there have been continuing debates concerning the
reinstatement of the death penalty in the UK.(BBC NEWS, 2011) reports that the Conservative
party MP calls for submission on capital punishmentin the UK. The Brigg and Goole MP is one of
a number of Tory backbenchers calling for a commons debate of the return of capital
punishment. (BBC NEWS, 5th August 2011) Currently, Paul Staines, who writes the Guido
Fawkes calls for the death to be brought back for child and police officer murderers, he carried
out a public opinion poll, which recommends that around half the population want capital
punishment to be reinstated for murders this rises to 60% when it comes to child or police officer
kills , furthermore his e petition on the government website needs 100,000 people to support it so
that there could possibly be a preliminary debate on the issue (BBC NEWS, 4th August 2011). As
Mr. Staines statistics poll shows, in 2011 that there is a high percent of the public that requests
capital punishment to be reinstated in the UK for serious crimes such as; murder, child murder and
police officer kills.
This study aims to examine the public s opinion of reintroducing capital punishments. (Gannon.A.T,
Wood.J, 2013, P.33) state that the motivation behind why public opinion is important because in
society we elect officials to represent us and, as

Anna Funder s Stasiland
Before this class, I only thought of the Berlin Wall as a week long lesson in my history classes
that was lumped in with World War II and the Cold War. Because it wasn t technically American
history, I was never taught about the Wall in a way other than how it related to America, which
is why I was excited to see this FYOS listed as an option when I registered for classes. History has
always interested me, and this topic was especially intriguing because I knew so little about it.
Coming in to the class, I don t think I had too many expectations; conversely, I honestly didn t know
what to expect having never truly breached the topic before. Despite my lack of expectations, I was
pleasantly surprised by all the information that I learned throughout the class. I especially enjoyed
reading Anna Funder s novel, Stasiland, and getting the human perspective of East Germany. So
many times, I ve been guilty of reducing East Germany into a country comprised of oppressors and
the oppressed without considering the complex emotions and rationale of the actual human beings
that inhabited the nation; the novel helped to reshape my beliefs. Although I still firmly believe
that the East German government... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was interesting to see a movie made by another country about an important piece of its history.
It was another part of the class that helped me to see that the East German government wasn t
completely bad although the movie certainly showed that there were some very bad people
involved. For my final project, I watched the movie Goodbye, Lenin, which I found extremely
intriguing. The idea of ostalgie that the movie portrayed was probably my favorite thing to learn
about people feeling nostalgic for the country and products and culture of their childhood is so
logical, but it is something I never thought about (obviously I didn t think about a lot of things,
which is why this class was so

Edith Wharton s Roman Fever
The majority of people in society today believe in free will and that they can choose what happens
in their own life. Others acknowledge an unknown force that shapes their lives, which they have no
control over. This conflict can be explained by the Determinism theory. Determinism is a
philosophy described as human beings having no free willand therefore, cannot control their own
actions and should not be held accountable. This philosophy is seen in Edith Wharton s short story
Roman Fever by her characters Mrs. Slade and Mrs. Ansley as they argue about a letter and an affair
in the duration of the story. Wharton s main characters are on opposing sides of the philosophy of
determinism, with Mrs. Slade representing determinism and Mrs. Ansley representing free will,
respectively and each effectively showing Wharton s disagreement to determinism.
In Roman Fever , Mrs. Slade represented determinism in the duration of the story through her
jealousy and similar emotions. Her thoughts and actions in the story towards her lifelong friend
has traces of jealousy and bewilderment throughout the story. For example when reminiscing on
the days of their youth in Rome, she realized that, There was no one of whom she had less right
to think unkindly than of Grace Ansley. Would she never cure herself of envying her! (Wharton
6). Mrs. Slade talks about how her life is boring and now that her husband has passed away, her
life is even more dreary. She envious of the type of daughter

College Sports Gambling
With all of the controversy of gambling in college sports, why is the issue still an issue? The
answer is money. There were actions taken towards this by
Congress, but the problem is that it was never completely abolished. Congress had made the
mistake of creating a way around it. It is now commonly referred to as the Las Vegas loophole.
They outlawed the betting nationwide with the exception of one state, one state that is the capital
of gambling, Nevada. This has caused few changes, with the exception of the ever growing revenue
that it generates. Another reason the legality still remains is one not frequently mentioned, but the
question of the ban being constitutional. But no matter what the law, is there ... Show more content

People of all kinds are in agreeance that the impact of this law would hardly be worth the effort.
John Shelk, vice president of the American Gaming Association, also stated It s not like
Congress is going to pass a law that bans legal gambling, and students across the country will say,
В‘Oh my God, I can t gamble anymore because it s illegal. Sen. McCain, co author of last year s
Senate bill, had countered his opinion to ESPN.com by saying, I don t think we have to choose
between enforcing existing laws on illegal gambling and closing the loophole on legal gambling.
McCain added, we can do both. McCain and others claim that eliminating legalized gambling in
Nevada would be an essential first step on stopping the college sports gambling. Critics disagree.
They believe that the attempt to chip away at illegal sports gambling isn t a logical first step, at all.
The fact of the college sports gambling, is that there is too much publicity, popularity, and money
surrounding this particular gambling sport.
In the beginning there was a problem with popularity. From 1951 1974, there was a 10% excise
tax levied by the Federal Government on the amount of sports wagers. The tax made the business
unprofitable since the profit margin was generally 5%

Everest Emergency Essay
Friday morning of April the 18th,The whole earth shook and a loud roar filled the morning sky.
From the distance, the gust of wind chill and the news of around 200 mountaineers sunk below
the avalanche gave the cold chill along my spine. It had only been three weeks that I started
working for Everest ER, a clinic operated at 17400 ft in the Himalayas. Our logistics manager
told our medical team that he saw a massive avalanche falling on the queue of around two
hundred Sherpa porters, who were carrying loads to Camp One at 19680 ft.Without having any
time to soak in the news of the disaster, we immediately started our preparation to receive the
casualties. We had no idea about the types of injuries and the number of peopIe affected. Even
worse, we feared that the deaths could be much higher. Our team of doctors, paramedics and
trained rescuers present on the Base Camp worked in a coordinated fashion. After 12 long hours
between helicopter rescues and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We offered our condolences and sympathy to the traumatized Sherpa community that evening.
Looking back at the whole event, I must admit that I was not fully prepared to handle that situation.
However, the experiences of having completed a Diploma in Mountain Medicine two months
before the disaster, the experience of successfully conducting a high altitude pilgrimage health camp
in the past, and also the experience of my training in the largest level one trauma center and
teaching hospital in my country; I did all but not buckle

Hydrofruit Case
Is HydroFruit still an attractive investment opportunity for MegaBank? Making an investment in a
company with potential legal issues is a risk, but with plausible solutions investment looks to be
rewarding. MegaBank is looking to make a $65million equity investment in HydroFruit, but there is
risk in this new investment. HydroFruit does face two major legal risks which involves: the hiring
of illegal immigrants, and potential discrimination lawsuits.
Objective and Goal: MegaBank s main objective is to reduce the risks concerning HydroFruit. In
the long run MegaBank s goal is to reduce all legal risk and create new profits. This new
investment would allow for an annual return yield between the 25% 35% range . It would also

In the agriculture industry a standard is to hire illegal employees even though it is against the law.
Although companies ask new employees for proof of authorized employment, if the employer
determines that the documents appear to be genuine then employers are not held legally
responsible for receiving false documents.
Significance of Problem: Social and Political Risk:
Hydrofruit has tried to change its hiring process by voluntary implementing a Immigration Reform
and Control Act pilot program, in 1989, by sending in the documents to the government actual
permission to work was determined but the process took months and many workers were gone by
the time it was determined (Advanced Business Communication 54). As of now HydroFruit is in
compliance with legal requirements, however HydroFruit maybe pretend to know less about false
documents so they can comply with Anti discrimination laws .

The Impact Of Technology On Technology
Technology builds, transforms, and inspires. Every aspect of one s creative, personal, and
professional life can be stored and backed up on technology. Because of its innumerable
capabilities and relevance, one could infer that there is an oddly intimate relationship between
humans and technology, simply by stating one would feel uncomfortable and naked without it.
Mobile communication, more specifically social media, leads to a further understanding of how
technology plays an influential role in the lives of youth. Many preadolescents acquire mobile
devices and rely on them for the majority of their play; therefore at such a young age, the device
and the childbecome inseparable which hinders the child from participating in other activities. In
sum, parents or guardians should not let their children acquire a mobile devicebefore the age of 10
to prevent advanced digital technology from invading and occupying their lives. The underlying
problem is that one on one communication between parentand child is more impactful than the use
of mobile devices because it allows both parent and child to have a more intimate and
understanding relationship. Parents should be the example and be upfront with their children on
monitoring online behavior, and furthermore, be challenging themselves to become more familiar
with the complexities of the advancements of new technology so that they are aware of what their
child could be a part of. Simone Orlowski, writer of The Promise and the

Maclaren Art Analysis
Upon arrival at the MacLaren exhibition center in Barrie Ontario, I was very surprised to be

I was intrigued to find this art piece which is called Head Smashed In Engine Block Buffalo

show the western culture by using scavenged materials which were taken from a car scrap yard. I
could imagine how long it would take to construct countless bison skulls using various car exhaust
parts. Looking at closer inspection, you can see many skulls have been discolored to a rust or

  • 2. The Current Rating System in the United States Essay English 122 12 1 11 The Current Rating System in the United States The current content rating system in use for film, the MPAA, is the only content rating system that is legally enforced in the United States. For this reason, the system has caused controversy. Many have claimed that the system is unbalanced, as the MPAA bases the level of appropriate content for all people in the United States off of the opinions of an unidentified council of people over the age of forty (Jenkins). The stance on how the system s effectiveness is a relative stance, however, the secondhand effects of the system are obvious and existing today. Decisions have been made by film distribution companies that have affected the way films with objectionable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This type of butterfly effect that the rating system has on films is evident: the attempt to block off certain age limits to harsh types of content has ultimately put pressure on artists to limit types of ways to tell a story in mainstream film. In the interview with filmmaker Kirby Dick on this subject, the interviewer asks him about the topic of sexuality in film, MPAA s stance on sexuality, and how Dick represented these ideas presented in his film. Dick stated, Allison Anders makes the very interesting point that in some ways the ratings system is more restrictive of sexuality now than it was in the Sixties and Seventies. I think there are a number of reasons. Perhaps to some degree society has shifted slightly. Film studios were making some money from films that were more sexually provocative, like Midnight Cowboy. But, then again, you have to realize that the studios benefit from the system s coming down hard on films, especially on independent films about adult sexuality. To begin with, who makes those films? Independents and foreign filmmakers make those films, and that s the studios competition. So they restrict it. It s not much competition, but it does make a difference. Jt also makes it appear like the Rating Jioard is doing its job as censors, as raters, doing their job, and doesn t pay attention to the fact that all these films about violence are slipping through unencumbered by a rating. And the studio filmmakers are kept ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It requires good literature review which is derived by tapping and evaluating previous researchers efforts and expertise. A potential research study on Conflict Management Styles among Corporate Executives in Developing Countries Nigeria a Case Study is considered for a signature assignment. Conflictis inevitable and exists everywhere. In organizational system, conflict and methods of conflict managementinfluences different groups (employees, management team and executives). Conflicts are realities of life and can be defined as a situation of competition in which the parties involved are quite aware of the incompatibility of future condition whereby each party wishes to occupy a position that is incompatible with the wishes of the other (Olu Adesubomi, 2013, p. 2). They have no boundaries. They occur whether we like it or not, especially when there is disagreement and misunderstanding which stands as major key characteristics of human relationships. The relationship could be domestic, national, or international (Spiroska, 2014). Furthermore, conflicts happen when people are incompatible. In the organizational setting, conflict could arise due to failure of the employer, not honoring certain agreed bargaining. Gary Paulsen uses repetition to express Brian s thoughts. In the beginning of Hatchet, he repeats the word alone to show Brain alone in the woods after the plane crash having no one or nothing except for the hatchet. Through the middle and ending of Hatchet, Gary Paulsenkeeps repeating the word tomorrow. In the middle of the novel, he uses the word tomorrow to show how Brian thinks the more things he does tomorrow the more things he would get done. In the end he uses the word because he is still thinking about getting saved and go home to his normal life. The second literary technique that is used by Gary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. An Explanation Of Why Sociologists Are Interested On Class Class is important as it can determine various aspects that will have a significant impact and influence on how people s lives are shaped. Feminists have argued for other things to be included such as social divisions to show how they intersect with class. Economic inequalities can have an impact on class as they can determine a person s status, wealth, income and lifestyle. Class is important as social inequalities exists amongst the rich and poor. Important social factors include poverty, health and education. A person s identity is just as important as their class. People may face discrimination due to their identity, whether that may be due to their gender, age, ethnicity or disability. Social mobility is where people are in a different social classnow from which they were brought up in. However sociologists argue that class is less important in contemporary society today than it once used to be. The purpose of this essay is to provide an explanation on why sociologists are interested in class. This assignment will define what class is and to what extent class matters. Other social divisions will be explored in this assignment to show how they intersect with class. The social divisions which intersect with class which will be discussed include economic and social inequalities, social mobility and identity. The beliefs from well known theorists, Karl Marx and Max Weber who disagreed on the nature of class, will also be included to support the main points which are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Essay on Sociological Autobiography My life started with my long and hard birth on July 14, 1993. I came into the world with a large scream and was immediately placed into some sort of category. The doctors and nurses took a quick look at me, and pronounced me as a girl. This social label of being a girl was now my gender, which is something I had no say in. Every since that very moment in time where my parents were told I was a girl, I have been treated according to my gender. This meant that my parents automatically dressed me in pink, bought me dollhouses and kitchen sets and threw me Barbie themed birthday parties. Since I was surrounded my whole entire life by these things, it was almost like second nature to think and act the way that I did and still do. My... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When my grandmother saw that I was playing with trucks and enjoying it, she quickly came over and grabbed them out of my hands, giving them back to the little boy I had taken them from. She then explained to me that trucks were for boys not girls, and I should stick to using my pink shovel and bucket set to make nice sandcastles. I didn t understand at that point what the big issue was, it was just toys that were fun to play with, but I agreed with my grandmother because I didn t want to get into trouble and from then on stuck to focusing on making sandcastles. I quickly forgot about the trucks, and never again did I think to play with anything remotely like that. Little did I know it, but that was one of the first examples of gender roles that I had been exposed too. Growing up, my label of a female has given me both advantages and disadvantages. Having a younger brother has given me a clearer view of how parents and family members socialize the both of us to act male or female. Because I am a female, it was expected of me from a very early age to attend school and university. There was never really a choice, it was either that or go straight into work, which was the less pleasing option. However my brother is just expected to get his high school diploma and go work for my father and take over our family business, which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I will do this by discussion of themes and practices of other artists that I am interested in, evaluating the issues they address. In particular Francis Alys, George Shaw and Social Realism. I first realised my interest in manual labour, menial jobs and cycle of working, when I was travelling, and this influenced my work. The renin angiotensin aldosterone system controls blood pressure and fluid balance in the body. Activation of the renin angiotensin aldosterone system causes increased sodium retention by the kidneys, which leads to reduced water loss into the urine and therefore blood volume expansion. If the RAAS is abnormally active, blood pressure will be too high.RAAS activation occurs during heart failure, which leads to fluid retention in the body. When the plasma sodium concentration is lower than normal or the renal blood flow is compact, the juxtaglomerular cells in the kidneys convert prorenin into renin, which is then unseen directly into the circulation. Plasma renin then cuts a short, 10 amino acid long, and peptide off a plasma protein known as angiotensinogen. The short peptide is known as angiotensin I. Angiotensin I is then converted, by the removal of 2 amino acids, to form an octapeptide known as angiotensin II, by the enzyme angiotensin converting enzyme found in the lung capillaries. Angiotensin II is a potent vaso active peptide that causes arterioles to constrict, resulting in increased arterial blood pressure. Angiotensin II also stimulates the secretion of the hormone aldosterone from the adrenal cortex. Aldosterone causes the tubular epithelial cells of the kidneys to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Barbara Lazear Ascher, born in 1946, writes, On Compassion. Having lived in New York City, Ascher is able to take first hand examples from the city to show the affection people have towards each other. Ascher is able to illustrate that compassion is something that has to be taught because of the adversity at people s heels by including tone, persuasive appeals, and the mode of comparing and contrast in her essay, On Compassion. Ascher appeals to pathos in her essay in order to compel the readers to feel compassion towards the victims. When she includes these facts, it enables the readers to validate that compassion is something that is taught, whether it is through plays or having to see someone in a worse condition than they are, compassion is still attained. • 13. LH Mouse Model Comparative analysis of LH levels and pulse frequency in mouse models Abstract: Estrogen is the primary female sex hormone and is responsible for the development and regulation of the female reproductive system and of secondary sex characteristics. Produced primarily by the ovaries, estrogen binds to and activates estrogen receptor beta (ER) a nuclear receptor. Estrogen plays an important role in the hypothalamic pituitary gonadal (HPG) axis by acting on gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons located within the hypothalamus. In females, a cyclic reversal of estrogen feedback produces a positive feedback loop at both the hypothalamic and pituitary levels. This is coupled with an increase in pituitary sensitivity to GnRH, which produces the massive surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) that triggers ovulation. However, LH is not only secreted during this surge it is secreted in a pulsatile manner otherwise. This paper will focus on the implications on LH pulsatility by knocking out ER, as well as by removing the ovaries. The stimulatory effect of estrogen is seen at the end of the follicular phase where estrogen triggers the preovulatory GnRH surge. The ability of estrogen to induce a surge declines with age in female rodents and women. This appears to be due in large part to a decrease in estrogen induction of GnRH neurons, particularly in rodents. The inhibitory effect of estrogen on GnRH secretion and GnRH gene expression has been show in in in vivo studies indicating that estrogen inhibits GnRH pulse amplitude in the early follicular and luteal phase of the ... • 14. Self-lessness And The Existence Of Selflessness In Today Despite many people fighting for a righteous cause ultimately making unethical decisions, Vigny s assertion that heroes do not exist is false. Heroes today display aspects of selflessness and portray themselves as role models for others. Modern heroes exist today through the individuals who put others before themselves. Selfless people can be defined as heroes because they are completing acts for the benefit of others first before themselves. Furthermore, this can be seen through people such as philanthropists, and volunteers to help the needy. For example, individuals who volunteer to help with the cleanup and rescue during Hurricane Harvey are displaying the heroic characteristic of selflessness. This illustrates that, without these volunteers, it would take a lengthy amount of time to recover from natural disasters, resulting in the preventable endangerment of citizens harmed. In addition, selflessness can be seen as a heroic characteristic in the epic poem, Beowulf. Just as volunteers risk their lives to help the needy, Beowulf, the epic heroof the piece of literature risked his life by diving into the lake of Grendel s mother to face the turmoil of fight , and attempt to kill the demon (line 1469). The selflessness of Beowulf further enhances the continued existence of heroes by showing that selflessness has continued to be a heroic characteristic from primordial times to today . These interests can be protected in various ways: (a)He can take preventative measures to limit loss such as wearing a safety belt while driving a vehicle or installing smoke detectors in a factory; or (b)He can save money and with time build up a private fund; or (c)Co operate with other legal subjects to collectively cover losses that have been incurred. However, in the above three scenarios, protective measures are not adequate protection. The solution to these problems is found in a formal insurance. • 16. Sources of Stress Experienced by International Students... As the world becomes increasingly globalized and interconnected, there is an imperative need for every student in this generation to be exposed and to be prepared for this rapidly changing world. Globalization sets the platform for a competitive environment, which challenges a country to increase their level of efficiency, promote innovation, and improve its overall standard of living. One of the ways that value added learning could be incorporated in students learning is through the dissemination of a rich multicultural classroom, whereby local students are interacting, exchanging knowledge, and building quality relationships with international students. However, this requires foreign students to travel or migrate to another country differing from their own for the purpose of furthering their education and/or other personal reasons such as seeking a better quality of life, searching to advance their career/life opportunities, or just simply looking for a change in their environment. Although cross cultural interaction is highly valuable, relocating to a new country and being isolated from relatives and friends can be a source of stress, anxiety, and confusion to international students, which can induce a real challenge to them for studying in another country such as the United States. This extensive qualitative research will identify sources of stress generally experienced by international college students living in the United States and their coping and adjustment ... • 18. Advantages Of Privatization Of Water Introduction The case discussed in this paper is that of whether water should be privatized or be a public asset. Nestle s chairman and former CEO Peter Brabeck states that water is not a right and it should be privatized as it is raw materials. Water is needed for everything, and all human beings and animals need it in order to live. Privatizing water is just another way of stealing. Water cannot be privatized and owned by private corporations whose only concern is to increase their profits. Counterarguments There are several counterarguments from proponents of privatization of water. The proponents of water privatization state that by having the private sector in charge of the distribution would make the process more efficient than the public sector doing so. There s no specific study and this cannot be predicted accurately as this has not happened previously. However, the distribution system has already been set up by the public sector and also the public sector has been handling the operations for years which equates to more experience in the field than other private companies would have. Another argument proponents of water privatization have is that they believe that it would cost less if the private sector took charge of the distribution of water. There s a wrong idea that shifting the burden from the public sector to the private sector taxpayers would pay less as the company would repair, maintain and upgrade the infrastructure. According to Martin Moore, What in effect is taking place is a State financed and officially organised mass migration of Europeans, from an over crowded temperate Europe, to a barren non European country overseas (Moore 1). However, Italywas the last country to explore and conquer the land in Africa, which limited the amount of land available to them. This was shown in the colonization of Libya. Libya was not a country that was ideal to colonize because of their stationary civilization and monotheistic religion. Regardless, Italy was determined to conquer this land for the benefit of the natives and Italy itself. Carlo Schanzer writes, In short, Italy wishes to govern her African colonies by introducing her surplus man power among backward populations and integrating the two, never by unnecessarily substituting the former for the latter (Schanzer 448). Italy intended to do this through focusing on giving justice, order, hygiene, communications, and education to Libya. In order to further their goal, Italy wanted to focus on the sanitation issue facing Libya. According to the Italian Colonial Policy in North Africa, it states, Italy colonizes not only with her sword, however, but also with the aid of her doctors and her teachers (Schanzer 449). • 21. Freedom Of Speech In American Schools Freedom of Speech in American Schools Perhaps the greatest cardinal sin that can be committed by our nation as a people is the restriction of free speech among our youth. If you take away freedom of speech, you are already chipping away at their freedom of thought, freedom of creativity, freedom of life. Despite what people want our youth to believe, everyone is free to thought and expression as suits them best. If you force students to withhold their thoughts they begin to learn they have nothing to add to the society, that their ideals and opinions are wrong. Of all the cruelty to which our children have been subjected, perhaps the worst is to take away their ability to say what has happened to them, to say what they know to be true, of... As previously stated, students are often expected to simply go along with what they re told, to focus on studies and their future run of the mill citizenship, and to above all avoid breaking off from the mold. Students and teachers both have little freedom to bring up unpopular opinions in school (Knowledge). Without the liberty of your words, you lose the liberty of your ideas. No matter what, the ultimate goal of the public school system is not to teach you. It is to shape you into what it wants and then to scrape away your independent thought. Schools have been notorious throughout the years for their ability to pull your thought out of you, to leave you a shell of yourself. To quote Robin William s infamous character of Mr. John Keating in Dead Poets Society, This is a battle, a war, and the casualties could be your hearts and souls. (Dead). Bernice Bobs Her Hair portrays a girl willing to give up her unique character to form a new and attractive personality from the help from those around her which she hopes will make her more mentally attractive. Furthermore, Sandra Cisneros Eleven captures a girl emotionally unsettled who observes in herself that while she turns eleven, she also portrays emotions from her past ages of ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, and one through a dilemma caused by her misunderstanding teacher. Both authors incorporate comparable and contrasting point of view styles... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Comparably, in Bernice Bobs Her Hair this problem also lies great since the entirety of its story Fitzgerald writes in third person. Third person provides an impeccable description of every situation, however, without shifting to any other point of view, Fitzgerald disadvantages the reader in obtaining a more personal view of one of the main characters. For example, at the time where Bernice is about to cut off her cousin Marjorie s hair it states, She was by the bedside now, very deliberate and calm. She acted swiftly. Bending over she found one of the braids of Marjorie s hair, followed it up with her hand to the point nearest the head, and then holding it a little slack so that the sleeper would feel no pull, she reached down with the shears and severed it. Without the use of first or second person, the reader lacks in attaining Bernice s thoughts leading up to her drastic action and cutting off Marjorie s hair. Overall, through both stories use of one main point of view, reader s lack attaining a different perspective of Fitzgerald s Bernice Bobs Her Hair and Cisneros Eleven. Second, Bernice Bobs Her Hair more effectively uses narration in its story since Fitzgerald uses an omniscient narrative presence so that the reader can get a glimpse of all the characters thoughts and feelings. • 24. The Two Types Of Symptoms Of Parkinson s Disease The Two Types of Symptoms of Parkinson s Disease Parkinson s disease (PD), a degenerative nervous system disorder, is more common every day, yet it is still a mystery on what causes it. More than a million Americans have been diagnosed with PD and every year there are 60,000 new cases. Affecting older people, it is the second most common disorder and the condition is expected to increase as the aging population increases. PD essentially is the loss of dopamine producing neurons. The increase in research has led to a wide range of possibilities to the causes involving both genetic and environmental factors. There are two different types of symptoms: motor and non motor. The diagnosis of Parkinson s disease can be challenging as the symptoms that are exhibited can also be symptoms of another neurodegenerative disorder (Gazewood 2013). There are no biological markers (tests or screenings) available for PD but researchers are working to develop an accurate one (PDF 2016). The cause of Parkinson s disease is unknown but it is thought to be linked to combined effects of genetic factors and environmental factors. There is a greater risk of having Parkinson s disease if someone in the family has been diagnosed with it. The genes linked to PD are SNCA, LRRK2, PARK2, and PINK1 (Lill et al. 2012). PD is also more common in non Hispanic whites and in males (Van Den Eeden 2003). The environmental factors are pesticide exposure, occupational exposure, cigarette smoking or dietary factors ... Information that can be easily used must be available so that the decisions makers within an industry can make informed decisions based on visible facts projected by the data available. If this is not the case, decision making processes can become extremely challenging and, in some cases, impossible. The flow of information within an organization is critical to the success of that organization (Davenport Prusak, 1998). Organizations struggle in collecting data, retrieving information and making decisions based on the extracted information. A decision making process consists of making judgments based on the qualitative data. There are several different types of systems like Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), which are being used by organizations to make decision processes. These systems have progressed tremendously in the last few years by making large amounts of information accessible using data marts and data warehouses (Wixom Watson, 2001). The above mentioned systems and many more that are not mentioned above allow managers to analyse data depending on the business requirements, to make better informed decisions. My qualities are that I am patient, caring, and creative. Adding me to the compound would be a great investment for the future. Sewing is a great passion of mine, I can make blankets, pillows, clothes, and more. You can give me any material and I will make something useful. One time I sewed together a small bag made entirely out of Capri sun pouches. I can provide all of these blankets and clothes for the people to keep them warm through the winter and the chilly summer nights. Also, another skill I have is Gardening, not only do I love it, I m awesome at it! When I first learned how to gardenI grew tomatoes. Everyone else in the gardening class wanted to grow something more extravagant like an enormous apple tree, or spicy jalapenos, but once I got through all of the boring stuff and finally started growing the tomatoes I learned to love it. After a couple months, I decided to start growing a gorgeous green garden. The garden... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I am really patient with kids, adults, and iPhones. I remember this one time I was on my phone trying to tell Siri directions, and she would never tell me whether to take a left, right, or keep going straight, but once I stopped what I was doing and took the time and patience to fix the voice control it started to work again. I incorporated this lesson that my phone taught me into my babysitting, and tried to be more patient with the kids. Since I am really good with kids, I would be a great help in any of the daycares. In my neighborhood, I am the most sought after babysitter. I also am CPR certified; I learned from the best teacher in Lewisville, which means if a child goes down I would be able to save their ... Who knew such a tiny feature could turn a easy game of tic tak toe into a memory game of strategy. Now allow me to impart my knowledge of this game to you. • 45. Anna Funder s Stasiland Before this class, I only thought of the Berlin Wall as a week long lesson in my history classes that was lumped in with World War II and the Cold War. Because it wasn t technically American history, I was never taught about the Wall in a way other than how it related to America, which is why I was excited to see this FYOS listed as an option when I registered for classes. History has always interested me, and this topic was especially intriguing because I knew so little about it. Coming in to the class, I don t think I had too many expectations; conversely, I honestly didn t know what to expect having never truly breached the topic before. Despite my lack of expectations, I was pleasantly surprised by all the information that I learned throughout the class. I especially enjoyed reading Anna Funder s novel, Stasiland, and getting the human perspective of East Germany. So many times, I ve been guilty of reducing East Germany into a country comprised of oppressors and the oppressed without considering the complex emotions and rationale of the actual human beings that inhabited the nation; the novel helped to reshape my beliefs. • 46. Edith Wharton s Roman Fever The majority of people in society today believe in free will and that they can choose what happens in their own life. Others acknowledge an unknown force that shapes their lives, which they have no control over. This conflict can be explained by the Determinism theory. Determinism is a philosophy described as human beings having no free willand therefore, cannot control their own actions and should not be held accountable. This philosophy is seen in Edith Wharton s short story Roman Fever by her characters Mrs. Slade and Mrs. Ansley as they argue about a letter and an affair in the duration of the story. Wharton s main characters are on opposing sides of the philosophy of determinism, with Mrs. Slade representing determinism and Mrs. Ansley representing free will, respectively and each effectively showing Wharton s disagreement to determinism. In Roman Fever , Mrs. Slade represented determinism in the duration of the story through her jealousy and similar emotions. Her thoughts and actions in the story towards her lifelong friend has traces of jealousy and bewilderment throughout the story. For example when reminiscing on the days of their youth in Rome, she realized that, There was no one of whom she had less right to think unkindly than of Grace Ansley. Would she never cure herself of envying her! (Wharton 6). Mrs. Slade talks about how her life is boring and now that her husband has passed away, her life is even more dreary. • 47. College Sports Gambling With all of the controversy of gambling in college sports, why is the issue still an issue? The answer is money. There were actions taken towards this by Congress, but the problem is that it was never completely abolished. Congress had made the mistake of creating a way around it. It is now commonly referred to as the Las Vegas loophole. They outlawed the betting nationwide with the exception of one state, one state that is the capital of gambling, Nevada. This has caused few changes, with the exception of the ever growing revenue that it generates. Another reason the legality still remains is one not frequently mentioned, but the question of the ban being constitutional. But no matter what the law, is there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People of all kinds are in agreeance that the impact of this law would hardly be worth the effort. John Shelk, vice president of the American Gaming Association, also stated It s not like Congress is going to pass a law that bans legal gambling, and students across the country will say, В‘Oh my God, I can t gamble anymore because it s illegal. Sen. McCain, co author of last year s Senate bill, had countered his opinion to ESPN.com by saying, I don t think we have to choose between enforcing existing laws on illegal gambling and closing the loophole on legal gambling. McCain added, we can do both. McCain and others claim that eliminating legalized gambling in Nevada would be an essential first step on stopping the college sports gambling. Critics disagree. They believe that the attempt to chip away at illegal sports gambling isn t a logical first step, at all. The fact of the college sports gambling, is that there is too much publicity, popularity, and money surrounding this particular gambling sport. In the beginning there was a problem with popularity. From 1951 1974, there was a 10% excise tax levied by the Federal Government on the amount of sports wagers. The tax made the business unprofitable since the profit margin was generally 5% ... From the distance, the gust of wind chill and the news of around 200 mountaineers sunk below the avalanche gave the cold chill along my spine. It had only been three weeks that I started working for Everest ER, a clinic operated at 17400 ft in the Himalayas. • 50. The Impact Of Technology On Technology Technology builds, transforms, and inspires. Every aspect of one s creative, personal, and professional life can be stored and backed up on technology. Because of its innumerable capabilities and relevance, one could infer that there is an oddly intimate relationship between humans and technology, simply by stating one would feel uncomfortable and naked without it. Mobile communication, more specifically social media, leads to a further understanding of how technology plays an influential role in the lives of youth. Many preadolescents acquire mobile devices and rely on them for the majority of their play; therefore at such a young age, the device and the childbecome inseparable which hinders the child from participating in other activities. In sum, parents or guardians should not let their children acquire a mobile devicebefore the age of 10 to prevent advanced digital technology from invading and occupying their lives. The underlying problem is that one on one communication between parentand child is more impactful than the use of mobile devices because it allows both parent and child to have a more intimate and understanding relationship. Parents should be the example and be upfront with their children on monitoring online behavior, and furthermore, be challenging themselves to become more familiar with the complexities of the advancements of new technology so that they are aware of what their child could be a part of.
