Introduction
According to the case study (Appendix A), High Stakes High School (HSHS) is a low income,
underperforming urban high school in Bronx, New York. School enrollment consists of 79% Black
and 21% Latino students. Of the student body, 91% qualify for a free or reduced fee lunch, and 13%
qualify as English Language Learners (ELLs). Over the last decade, school performance has waned.
The performance has coincided with troubling school level trends, such as increased absenteeism and
suspensions, as well as gang activity and violence. Trying to align with the instability at the district

The poem Strange Fruit by Abel Meeropol, could be described as dark and graphic, as it embodies
Southern violence in America. The poem describes the lynching of black slaves, which was generally
presented to an audience of whites. Billie Holiday, a black female artist, would sing the poem to a
predominantly upper class white club. But strangely, the poem was written by a white man, Abel
Meeropol. Although the last confirmed lynching was in 1968, there are other forms of racially
motivated killings and violence in the United States today such as police brutality and the race riots
formed by white supremacist in Charlottesville. White America is linked and always will be to the
history of black killings. To understand what some of the lynching s could have looked like, Meeropol

1250. Guibert of Nogent s autobiography, A Monk s Confession: The Memoirs of Guibert of Nogent,

In America, the state of education has always been a pressing concern, perhaps now more than ever.
Improving education has been proven to strengthen the nation time and time again, specifically with
regard to science, mathematics and technology. Ten years after the start of the Cold War on October 4,
1957, the Soviet Union launched the first ever man made satellite, Sputnik 1. This action by the
Soviets caused immediate concern for the educational system in the United States because this launch
proved that the Soviet Union had superior technological capabilities (SOURCE 1). America s first

which provided large amounts of funding to American schools, and supported American students who
