Sidney A. Ribeau s Leadership Academy
The Sidney A. Ribeau President s Leadership Academy is something that helps change students lives
so that they may change others. They value integrity, service, credibility, and learning. It strives to
create student leaders that can change the world. I believe I am destined to be one of those people. I
know, everyone says they want to change the world. Everyone wants to be the hero. But most people
don t want to work for it. They want a Noble Peace Prize dropped into their hands, no work required. I
believe that you have to work for what you want. And I will. I will strive to embody the values the
PLA has, each and every day. I have always lived my life for others. I will put others first, and
continue to volunteer throughout the community. I will genuine, true, and honest. I will be a credible
leader, someone who people can trust and learn from. And, I will continue to learn. One can never
learn everything there is to learn about life, but I can try. I will learn how to lead so that I can make a

Another essay to write, another chance to live out my dream. But, after reading what PLA is all about,
I realized that it is so much more than that. And I can honestly say that I don t know if I deserve it.
There are people that have done so much more than me, made more of a difference in kids lives than
me. But, I can also tell you, honestly, that no one will work harder than me. It has taken me years to
gain the courage and confidence to become a leader, and if I want to change the world, I need to
continue to grow. Day after day, year after year, I will put my best foot forward to making a positive
contribution to BGSU, a positive contribution to the PLA, and a positive contribution to the world. I
will never stop striving to be the best, and I believe I would make a great addition to this

Digital Image Of A Optical Signature Recognition
3.4.1 Offline Signature Recognition
In this type of recognition, the text is not recognized at the same time as it is produced but after the
user has finished writing. In this case, the text is originally written on a surface such as paper and from
there on it is recognized by the computer by scanning the surface. In the scanned Signature is first
stored digitally in grey scale format. bitmap image, and then further processing is done on it to have a
good recognition accuracy.
Features for recognition are enhanced and extracted from the stored bitmap image by using digital
image processing. Offline signature recognition is known as Optical Signature Recognition (OCR),
because the image of writing is converted into bit pattern by an optically digitizing device such as
optical camera or scanner. The recognition is done on this bit pattern data for machine printed or hand
written text [3]. Recognition of machine printed signatures is also a part of Optical Signature
Recognition. In offline, methods are less suitable for man machine communication because no real
time interactivity is present. It is suitable for automatic conversion of paper documents to electric
documents, which then may be interpreted by computers. Some applications of the off line recognition
are large scale data processing such as postal address reading; check sorting, office automation for text
entry automatic inspection and identification [11].

The Causes Of Capitalism
Capitalism has established what many others were unable to before; it has created a single economic
system for the world (Johnston). This essay will illustrate the flaws in capitalism as viewed by Engels.
It will define historical materialism, and will analyze the fundamental and secondary discrepancies in
capitalism as mentioned by Engels. Lastly, the following paper will also demonstrate what Engels
believes is the outcome of capitalism. In Engel s excerpt on Theoretical , Engel begins by describing
historical materialism as a principle of production and exchange of products, which is the basis of
every social order (Engels 293). Historical materialism analyzes the material conditions of society,
how people produce and exchange items (Johnston). It is the way in which society is producing and
exchanging goods that creates social relations as well as hierarchy (Johnston). Furthermore, the mode
of production conditions social relations and one s consciousness. The way an individual perceives the
world ultimately arises from our social and economic structures (Johnston). Society is further divided
into social classes which is determined by what is produced, how it is produced, and how the product
is exchanged (Johnston). The fundamental contradiction in capitalism as laid out by Engels is social
production and individual appropriation. The fundamental contradiction is the idea that the capitalist
appropriates the products that the working class create. The modern

Transcontinental Airways History
Flight has become romanticized by humanity, it provides Freedom . Throughout the majority human
history, humans have used land and water for their transportation needs. The invention of the airplane
opened the use of a third medium, air. Flight only has the illusion of freeing us from earth. Airplanes
would not be able to maintain flight without their ground based systems. These systems are arranged
along flight corridors or airways. The Transcontinental Airway was the first major flight corridor
constructed in the United States. The ground systems constructed along these corridors have made
major impacts upon the landscape of the early 20th century.
The United States Post Office (USPS) established the Arial Mail Transportation Service on ... Show

There were lights to define the border of each landing strip, approach lights and red lights to mark
obstructions to be avoided.
The features found on the transcontinental were found on airways across the country. Over 18,000
miles, 15550 beacons, and 263 intermediate landing fields were built over the course of the program.
The airways crossed nearly every type of terrain the country has. The manner of lights installed and
where they were installed was dictated by the individual challenges of the terrain of each airway. It is
hard to pin a date as to when the airway system was phased out. There was no sweeping change to
cause their disappearance. Small incremental changes and advances in technology made them
obsolete.
Today remnants of the system still exist throughout the country, primarily in the west where
development pressures were lower. The airway system pioneered by the Transcontinental is still in use
today, though with a much reduced capacity, in mountainous regions of

Heavy Metal Music Stereotypes
In the documentary the main message is that the music that we listen to has a negative impact on the
way we act and how we think. In my opinion some of the music we listen to can have a very negative
effect on how we view people and some situations that can lead to death or scrutinizing sexuality. For
example in a study, A study performed to explore the possible effect of heavy metal music containing
either sexually violent or nonviolent lyrics on males attitudes toward women revealed that those
exposed to heavy metal music, with either sexually violent or nonviolent lyrics, showed significantly
more negative stereotyped attitudes toward women than those in a group instead exposed to classical
music.Likewise, in a study performed by Fischer and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example in the text it states, When song lyrics focus on death and suicide, the American Academy
of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry warns that it can make suicide seem like a good solution to
problems. According to an article published by the journal Pediatrics, Heavy metal and some rock
music have been associated in some studies with an increased risk of suicide. However, a more recent
study published by the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, states, It seems that listening to music to
express uncomfortable emotions could be a rather effective coping mechanism for girls since it
reduces the risk for suicidal behaviors. (https://www.livestrong.com/article/1000832 can music bad
influence kids teens/ ). This is saying that in many cases that the things that we listen to have a bigger
effect on us than we realize and that we should start to pay more attention to the lyrics that are in the
song rather than what the backround music is.It can sometimes help people increase the way people
feel and then they go on to do many irrational things that cause many issues that don t solve problems

When I learned about the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, I was exhilarated. If I am to be
accepted, I would not have to limit myself to one area of interest. I could pursue all because NYU
connects the students to their right path through the school and the city.
Another factor that attracted me to NYU is the location of the campus, New York City. Students can

Relationship Between The United States And Black America
The relationship between the United States and Black America can best be compared to an unbalanced
scale. Some would argue that the majority take regular advantage of the minority, creating a distinct
schism between the two groups. The actions taken by each group adversely shape the behavior of one
another. While the oppressed lash out because of the unfair conditions of society, the oppressors
continue to dish out what they consider to be the appropriate punishment. The oppressed continue to
become marginalized and therefore begin to lose hope for the future, often turning to lifestyles that
would otherwise be considered to be dysfunctional and self destructive. In terms of the
aforementioned, unbalanced scale, Black America continues to be outweighed in favor for the desires
and wants of the majority, White America. This cycle can best be described by the term nihilism,
which shares similar Latin roots with other English words such as annihilate or null , meaning a
pervasive sense of hopelessness and despair that characterizes many parts of contemporary black
American life (West, 1993). In his writing, Nihilism in Black America, Cornel West argues that
nihilism acts as a disease to black Americans, in that today s disproportionate corporate markets have
led black Americans to live pleasure filled lives; neglecting values of love, care, and service once
handed down by generation s past (West,1993). West goes on to say that the threat of nihilism can be
conquered by

Global vs. domestic Sourcing
The costs of global sourcing include some of the same costs found in domestic sourcing; there are also
costs that are different. The major cost categories are administrative, exclusively foreign and common
costs.
1. Administrative Costs
Administrative costs of foreign sourcing include identification, qualification, program development,
travel, broker fees and others that are not directly involved with the product. Some of these costs are
common to both the domestic and international aspects of sourcing.
2. Exclusively foreign costs
Exclusively foreign costs are those that would not be incurred if a domestic source were used.
Examples of these costs are duty charges, customs fees, import fees and currency exchange costs.
Ocean and air freight could be mentioned, but these are part of the transportation costs of a good that
would be incurred from any source. In the case of Eastern Waves, exclusively foreign costs are
established by governments and are very difficult to avoid.
3. Common Costs
Finally, there are those costs that are common to both global and domestic sourcing. Direct labor and
materials costs, lead time costs, transportation costs and inventory costs are a part of both domestic
and offshore sourcing. Transportation costs, inventory costs, and lead time costs tend to be higher
when sourcing globally. On the

Why Do We Celebrate Columbus Day
In the U.S and most Latin American countries, Christopher Columbus has been portrayed as a symbol
of heroism because of his discovery of the Americas. Thus, many countries have proclaimed
Columbus Day as a national holiday to celebrate the anniversary of Columbus s arrival to the
Americas in 1492. However, in the U.S, Columbus Day started as a celebration of the Italian
American heritage and in 1937; however, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Columbus Day
a federal holiday after intense lobbying by a Catholic service organization consisting largely of Italian
Americans (Phillips, 2016). Particularly most of the Italian American communities celebrate their
heritage in Columbus Day.
Nevertheless, for most Italian Americans, Christopher ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It also gives a completely wrong impression to say that Columbus discovered America; as Indigenous
people, we often say that he invaded America (Mitchell,2017). Another point to mention is that
Christopher Columbus never discovered America. There is historical evidence that suggests that
Vinkings explorers landed in the Americas before Columbus, The Vikings early expeditions to North
America are well documented and accepted as historical fact by most scholars. Around the year 1000
A.D., the Viking explorer Leif Erikson, son of Erik the Red, sailed to a place he called Vinland, in
what is now the Canadian province of Newfoundland (Weiner, 2007). However, despite the historical
evidence that there may be nothing honor about Columbus, in many countries, he continues to be
portrayed as a hero who discovered America. Also, many history books around the world continues
giving him credit for discovering

The Perception of African Americans in the Media and How...
The Perception of African Americans in the Media and How it Affects Their Self Identity
There has been much debate over the perception of African Americans in the media and how it affects
their self identity. It is easy to find examples of bias in portraying African Americans, but not a lot of
causal research to prove that it causes problems with self identity. A case can even be made that the
amount of media presence by African Americans, whether biased or un biased, has greatly helped to
unify and give voice to a small minority group.
The role of the media in the social identity of African Americans
According to the United States Census Bureau (2001), 12.3% of all people reporting as one race
reported they were Black or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before 1787, of course, African Americans were slaves and only thought of as chattel. In 1787 the
U.S. Constitution was ratified. It provided for the continuation of the slave trade for another 20 years
and stipulated that a slave counted as three fifths of a man for purposes of representation by
government. In 1865 some headway was gained when the Thirteenth Amendment was passed,
outlawing slavery and establishing a Freedmen s Bureau to assist former slaves. Also in 1865 Union
General, William T. Sherman issued a field order setting aside 40 acre plots of land in Georgia, South
Carolina, and Florida for African Americans to settle. Yet, in 1866, all white legislatures in the former
Confederate states passed the, so called, Black Codes sharply cutting the freedom of African
Americans and virtually re enslaving the race. Since that time there have been many gains and set
backs for African Americans. Given the history of the United States treatment of African Americans, it
is easy to understand how they could struggle for their true identity. Perhaps James Jones (1991) says
it best when he states, Black personality is in part an adaptation to the political contours of racism.
The conflict between the freedoms and rights of United States citizens is juxtaposed to the denial of
freedom and rights that is the history of the African American presence in this

Developing Technology Systems From Cyber Criminals
In our growing global world companies rely heavily on their IT infrastructure to accomplish critical
business functions. To effectively compete in a fast paced, multifaceted, global economy,
organizations are employing new technologies at an unprecedented rate. In most cases, either ignoring
or not fully understanding the increased exposure to their business. The difficulty s facing
organizations today in this global market is how they will protect new technology systems from cyber
criminals.
The challenges that organizations face today lays in security both physical and logical. Having good
physical security in place is just as important as having those logical controls. Organizations today
need both having one without the other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There could also be a power failures that can disrupt operations. The intention of every organization
should be to have a contingency plan in place throughout its business units to help enterprise business
continuity and disaster recovery.
In addition to continuity planning organizations must maintain a current security policy that enforces
employee training. Human threats either intentionally or unintentional can have a significant effect on
an organization. Physical security is only half the battle organizations must also have those logical
controls in place. Threats come from outside influences that want to penetrate the business the reasons
range from stealing data to hacktivism. As corporations continue to face new risks they also have to
contend with the difficult task of protecting both internal and external customers against identity theft.
Logical controls are used to safeguard against unauthorized access to computing resources. Logical
controls are a combination of hardware and software used to detect and prevent intruders on the
corporate network. There are also detection systems that focus on suspicious activity on the host based
to fight against insider threat. When a company has systems in place to monitor network behavior, it
can flag anomalies in traffic traversing the network. Target Corporation had this type of software

Ted Talk Essay
When it comes to choice it always seems to be a love hate relationship: we hate making them, but we
can t live without them. Anyone can all look back to a time in our lives where they wish someone
could just pick for us, or times when we wish there were more to choose from. All Americans have
many choices, and it is such a part of our daily lives that we don t even realize it. Barry Schwartz and
Sheena Iyengar s TED talks bring up interesting ideas about choice, how people deal with them and
their affects. They both state that although choice is good, it can also have negative effects. Schwartz
explains what most people believe and experience with choice, while Iyengar shows cultural
differences in choice making. Both Schwartz and Iyengar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second is the more choices the more likely that the best choice can be made, and the third
assumption is that you should never say no to choice. Iyengard evaluates these three assumptions with
various studies where one group is American and the other is another culture. Her studies help
understand why and how Americans make choices in comparison to the rest of the world. Without
doubt, Iyengard s studies and analysis on choice is interesting but Schwartz s was clearer because it
easily communicated the message that was more applicable to the public. Choices are an important
part of everyone s lives and the choices we make can reflex who we are as individuals. Choice and the
ability to choose are excellent and can represent a sense of freedom. Schwartz s and Iyengard s
analysis on choice focused on the effects of choice in people and how people react and deal with it.
Schwartz s Official Dogma and explanation of how Americans act in response to choice making is the
most relatable to individuals and clearly chows the consequences of too much choice. His analysis can
assist to people realize that maybe because we have more choice doesn t necessarily mean we will
make us happier or the best decision will be made. Understanding the consequences of too much
choice can possibly make individuals improve the negative effects it can have and make us happier

Analyzing The Product By Conducting A Due Diligence Plan...
Because the evaluation process is a critical factor in determining the systems, the process should
include various components. Some of the ways that I would evaluate the individual RFPs would be to
analyze the product by conducting a due diligence plan (Plan, 2011). The components involved in this
process consist of looking at demonstrations, conducting site visits, and doing check references
(Oachs Watters, 2016) (Plan, 2011). By looking at demonstrations, (whether they d be vendor fairs or
individual presentations) it gives the potential users the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the
system and thus makes the users feel part of the whole process (Plan, 2011). Additionally,
demonstrations allow for easy side to side system comparison which also eases the evaluation process.
By doing so, it can help the vendor have a clearer understanding of what the facility s specific
requirements are (Amatayakul, 2013). Furthermore, conducting site visits, allows the project team to
get real feedback about how the staff feels with new system and allows the potential buyer to see the
system in action (Oachs Watters, 2016). Furthermore, I would use reference checks to check the
credibility of the vendor (StratisHealth, Analysis, RFP, 2009). By doing so, it would allow me to have
a better visual as to seeing if the items listed on the RFP are things that can actually be accomplished
accurately and efficiently (Amatayakul, 2013). That said, in order to evaluate the system, other

Examples Of Classroom Observation For Children
For my classroom observation, I am placed with Alice Hunt at Genesis Child Care Center. It has a
very nice atmosphere and the children all seem to really enjoy their cooperating teacher and
classroom. My classroom has a lot of positive areas and is beneficial to the children s development
and learning. On the other hand, there is some room for improvement inside the classroom. I think by
adding some things to the classroom and taking some things away would help the classroom become a
better more interactive classroom for the children. There are some things as a future educator that I
would like to bring into the classroom that I feel would implement the classroom also.
The three things that I feel are very positive for the children and that I feel makes the classroom a
positive environment is for starters the artwork and their writings placed around the room. Having the
children s artwork and other work around the room is crucial for building a strong relationship with
the child and the parents see that you care about everyone s work. Also, the children build a very
strong confidence to keep improving on their artwork or their own writings. The article that Natasha
read from our discussion board recently said that by having the artwork placed on the walls through
the classroom the children feel a part of the classroom and that s exactly how my children feel when
they walk through the doors. Secondly the materials are all available for the children to easily access

The Marketing Program Model Incorporates Different Aspects...
The marketing program model incorporates many aspects of a product in order to promote sales of the
product. A marketing program looks at four elements that are essential to marketing: the product, the
price of the product, the distribution of the product, and the promotion of a product (Ferrell and
Hartline, 2005, p. 149). In order for Gillette to compete with online competitors, all four of these
elements need to be addressed in a way that will benefit the company and market the product
effectively. Gillette is a well known brand name that has created very popular products throughout the
years. The product aspect of the marketing program is a strength that Gillette has created in order to
start the online subscription model. A product needs to be appealing to customers as well as meet the
needs and wants of the customers and Gillette s razors and blades have been at the top of the sales for
many years. The razors and blades are at the mature stage of development, but customers still need to
product to carry out grooming needs. Also, by Gillette developing an online market, the company is
essentially marketing a convenience product that is easy to obtain. Therefore, Gillette does not need to
try to create a razor with five or six blades just to be above the Schick Quattro, they need to focus their
attention on marketing the already appealing and satisfying products they have produced. The
marketing team may also offer a trial period for three months. This would allow

A Simulation Based On A Health Care Organization
This paper focuses on a simulation based on a health care organization that is having financial
problems. The simulation is based on a cardiac care hospital called Elijah Heart Center. The paper
discusses decisions that had to be made based on financial dilemmas Elijah Heart Center is facing and
how these dilemmas can be solved based on the decisions made in the simulation. Phase I: Bridge a
Working Capital Shortage The first option, I chose was to reduce agency staff. These types of
employees actually cost more money to employ because they are contracted with a different company,
so it costs more money to have them work for the company than regular company employees. The
Elijah Heart Center will find that not only will the organization save money by not hiring contract
employees but they do not have the expertise, training and knowledge of company policies and
procedures that regular employees have. The second option that I chose was to change the skill mix.
Employees who are untrained, unlicensed or have limited expertise have to have duties that do not
require special training or degrees. These employees can concentrate of tasks that do not require much
skill or training such as, feeding, bathing or comforting the patient. This provides assistance to the
licensed employees so they can better concentrate on patient care without worrying about smaller
tasks. This also benefits the heart center by reducing the expenditure on employee salaries. This way

circumstances of ordinary people, and it must do so through a meaningful narrative. The universal
interests are synonymous with the basic needs of a human; Anthony Robbins, an American author,
philanthropist, and life coach, defines the basic human needs with six terms: contribution, certainty,
growth, variety, significance, and love. Throughout Kate Chopin s novella The Awakening, the main
protagonist, Edna, experiences albeit at differing levels all six of the basic needs. Thus, The
Awakening qualifies as a piece of literary work because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Edna only has limited certainty. She has security and safety, but lacks comfort she is not comfortable
in her own skin. She is forced to conform to society s assigned gender roles, and is frowned upon
when she diverges from it: At a very early period [Edna] had apprehended instinctively the dual life
that outward existence which conforms, the inward life which questions (18). Additionally, the caged
parrot in the beginning of the story is symbolic of Edna s growing frustrations about her lack of
comfort. The parrot exclaims, Allez vous en! Sapristi!, (1) which translates to, Go away! For God s
sake! These words are directed at Léonce, representative of Edna voicing her anger at her husband
because he trapped her in the cage of maternal responsibilities that she wants to be freed from. Edna s
need of certainty her search for comfort is partly the cause of her demise in the end. The third basic
human need is growth. This is signified by a sense of development both physically and mentally.
Everyone, toddler or adult, is continually growing. This is a universal interest because people
instinctively want to learn, and Edna is no different. Her progression through the novella is a, sort of,
second adolescence. Adolescence is the period in life when people begin to grow and individualize
themselves, and it is no doubt that in The Awakening, Edna is trying to grow her wings

Jeremy In The Wild Analysis
I just want to start off by saying that I really enjoyed watching survivor this year. The show is
unscripted and completely in the wild. This means there are very limited cultural influences of the
contestants and we, as viewers, get to see firsthand the actions and the thoughts of the contestants.
Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes, and survivor provides a prime
real life example for us to do this. I just want to get it out there now that I think Keith should ve won,
however, I think Jeremy is still a very worthy winner. There were several ways that players chose to
outwit, outlast, and outplay this season that can all be illustrated by psychological principles.
Examples of these include: Hindsight bias,

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised Critical Analysis Essay
The Revolution Will Not Be Televised is a poem and song by Gil Scott Heron. Scott Heron first
recorded it for his 1970 album Small Talk at 125th and Lenox, on which he recited the lyrics,
accompanied by congas and bongo drums. The message of the song is the elusive nature of political
culture in Nixons America and the inability of the mainstream to capture the real heart of the people.
Heron uses cultural refrences from the 1970s to express his angerin the 1970s. What he is trying relay
in his poem that In a country where everything was becoming increasingly sanitized and pre

I found the documentary very informative of how addictive caffeine can be. But at the same time it
demonstrated tea which I had no idea there was tea which had caffeine in it. But I wish they would

tea. I wasn t really surprised with how these students were addicted to caffeine the way they are.
Nowadays not all of the times do individuals drink coffee to wake up but just because of all the new

Cultural And Cultural Diversity In Hey Arnold
As a kid, watching television was one of my favorite things to do. It seemed as if when the TV was on,
the world stopped moving for an hour or two. There were many shows from my childhood that helped
shape me into the person I am today, but the one that stood out amongst the rest was Hey Arnold. The
hit 90 s show Hey Arnold enculturated children through illustrating social acceptance, self confidence,
and displaying resilience through hardships.
As a young child growing up in the late 90s/early 00s, Hey Arnold helped me become a more
culturally and socially accepting individual through the consistent exposure of different ethnicities and
family structures. For example, Arnold s grandparents housed two immigrants Mr. Hyunh from
Vietnam and Oskar Kokoshka from Czechoslovakia. These two men from two entirely different
cultural backgrounds were able to share a home, as well as guide Arnold through several issues he
faced growing up. Arnold showed a full capacity of love and acceptance for these men s diverse race
and backgrounds. Another example of the ethnic diversity in Hey Arnold is Arnold s friends. His best
friend Gerald, a young sporty African American boy, Phoebe a young Japanese American girl, and his
Jewish friend Harold are prime examples of the cultural and racial diversity the show displayed. None
of these characters were treated poorly or persecuted based on race or culture. In the episode Harold s

Why Is Child Beauty Pageants Bad
Everyday across the country thousands of children are dress up to compete in pageants based on who
is the cutest. The children are judged on their personalities, goals, and outfits. This does not seem so
bad at first glance and really it is not. The problem starts when children are put in make up padded
bras high heels and swim suits then sent down a catwalk with hundreds of people looking at them.
This is where child beauty pageants cross the line. Along with the fact various aspects of the beauty
pageants stunt growth cause emotional problems and eating disorders, child beauty pageants exploit
children.
Whether you think child beauty pageants are a chance for little girls to play dress up, or a training
ground self centered brats, everyone should agree that sexualizing a 3 year old little girl is wrong. The
problem with many child beauty pageants is that they over sexualize children. many pageants include
swimsuit sections or have children wearing padded bras to make themselves more appealing to judges.
In what was likely a misguided effort to gin up publicity and ratings for the show, TLC released
footage of a 3 year old contestant dressed as the prostitute played by Julia Roberts in the 1990 film

can destroy a child s self esteem which may cause psychological problems. Studies have shown some

Eighty percent of 10 year old girls in the U.S. report they have been on a diet, according to a recent
study Eating Disorders Today Not Just a Girl Thing. More children in pageants show signs of body
dissatisfaction than children that are not in pageants. These findings suggest childhood beauty pageant

Curricular Birds Response
How does feeing behavior change in the instance a threating noise is made, such as the call of a

does it take for the first bird to come back) and how many birds left and ran after the presentation of
the sound, how many birds come to feed after: 1 min, 2 min,

Once all birds have been counted I will play the sound and note the actions of the birds (freeze or flee)
along with noting the number of birds that have left and the number that stayed at the feeder. I will
then measure the number of birds feeding over a 10 minute period (how many birds are feeding at 1
min mark, 2 min mark, 3 min mark...etc.). At the end of the 10 minute period, I will replay the sound
and repeat the process 5 more times. In addition to tallying the number of birds present I will measure
how long it took for the first bird to come back to the feeder.
I will do each condition for a total of 3 5 times (occurring once every other day), over a one hour per
day. Each trial will be 10 minutes long, with the next occurring immediately at the end of the previous
one. A total of 6 trials will be conducted per day. I will leave at least one week in between conditions
(bell vs predator call) to account for any habituation.
I will compare all trails with one another to see if there are any differences. I will also compare the
responses of birds in a natural woodland setting to that of birds in a more urban setting. Then I will
use both conditions to see if the birds were responding to just the presentation of a loud sound, or were
responding to the threating call, giving me the ability to determine if the birds can make a

Summary Of Let There Be Dark By Paul Bogard
In this analysis, we will thematically analyze Paul Bogard s Let There Be Dark , a newspaper article in
the Los Angeles Times published on December 21st 2012. In terms of a purpose, we must make the
distinction between convincing and persuading. In my opinion, Bogard aims to persuade push for
action via emotional appeals his readers of the growing dangers of light pollution as opposed to
natural darkness. After he presents his main argument, Bogard also sets forth some solutions to the
problems to convince the reader that there is still hope. Bogard s reliance on anecdotes from the past
suggests this article is targeted primarily towards adults, as they are the ones who can most relate with
them. Throughout the article, Bogard uses logos, pathos, and ethos to persuade the reader of his
argument. This includes employing vivid language, facts, logical reasoning, emotional appeals, and
anecdotes. We will begin by analyzing how Bogard uses logos to convey his point.
Bogard first uses logos when he mentions how 8 of 10 children (Bogard line 3) in the United States
will never know true darkness. This suggests that natural darkness is decreasing, thus setting the
premise for Bogard s argument. This statistic is effective because Bogard uses it to set a sharp contrast
between past and present generations. The main argument begins by Bogard referring to how some
major medical institutions, such as the World Health Organization, have acknowledged the harmful

Clash Of Civilizations In Identity And Violence By Amartya...
In Amartya Sen s book, Identity and Violence, he discusses an article that was written by Samuel
Huntington, called Clash of civilizations. The article Clash of Civilizations is Huntington s take on
how violence will be caused post Cold War. . He argues that the cause of violence after the Cold War
will be due to differences within cultural and religious identities. However, this article was written in
1993, and surely times have changed from then. There s been quite a few articles written critiquing
Huntington s, Clash of Civilization since it was written. Of those critiques, I will be using Edward

and society in general is becoming increasingly more complex and the Clash of Civilization has failed

Organic Foods Vs Organic Food
As the world continues to embrace health and fitness living and as the levels of environmental
awareness increase, so does the popularity of organic foods continue to skyrocket. According to a
recent survey conducted by a renowned body in the United States, more than forty percent of the US
consumers are now taking the organic foods path over the inorganic, and it seems that this new wave
is not going away anytime soon. According to most of the users, organic food is much tastier, safer,
helps to prevent environmental exploitation and on top of it all boasts more nutritional value than
inorganic food (Thøgersen 172). However, there is no difference in dietary levels between organic and
inorganic food, and this discussion examines what sets these two categories apart and why their
nutritional levels are the same.
Organic food is any product produced by a farming system which does not incorporate the use of
human made fertilizers and pesticides, livestock feed additives or growth regulators. According to
Cooper, Leifert, and Ursula (45), organic food uses natural methods of agriculture which aim at giving
a product which is environmentally friendly, economically viable and also socially healthy. For
instance below are some of the practices which organic farmers engage in to ensure that they meet this
objective (Harper and Aikaterini 290). Rather than use human made fertilizers, the organic food
farmers use plant and animal manure to increase the soil quality. For example,

Persuasive Essay On Customer Service
There really does come a time when, as a pair of trains are getting close to each other and picking up
speed, that you know you should turn away, or at least wince meaningfully, in anticipation of the crash
and explosion of flames and flying metal that you know is just moments away. You know you should,
a part of you wants to, but you cannot turn away.
That is the feeling that I have these days as I watch the airline industry. There they are, flying along
with absolute, reckless abandon and it is just a matter of time before they hit something. I am not sure
what they will hit reregulation, economic reality, unlooked for competition from upstart airship
companies but I do know that when they hit it, it will be spectacular.
So what is fueling all this talk of crashing trains and dire predictions vis à vis the airlines? Two words:
Customer Service.
Any good businessman understands one thing if he understands nothing else that customer service is
vitally important to the continued survival of a company. In fact, ask any small business owner the
secret of his success and the answer will usually have something to do with customer service. You can
have the greatest product in the world, but if you don t work on customer service making the customer
s experience as good as it can be then you are not going to sell very much. If a recent survey from the
University of Michigan is correct, this seems to be a lesson lost on the majority of airline executives
these days. In fact, with

Ever since nuclear weapons of mass destruction have existed, people have been attempting to create
ways to prevent a war that would bring about a worldwide Arma geddon. Many of today s top military
and government officials have been studying ways in which the United States can protect itself from a
nuclear missile attack. What they have come up with is the National Missile Defense program, or

The fear of an attack, however, stayed with many people. It became the goal of the United States to
stockpile weapons, to use in the event of a nuclear attack from the Soviet Un ion or other nuclear
super power. A few years later, during the Nixon Presidency in 1968, the United States, USSR, and a
number of other states signed the Nuclear Non proliferation Treaty. The NPT was designed to prevent
the spread of nuclear weapons and technology from the super power states to the still developing
states. (Winkler 1999, 182)
In 1972, four years after NPT was signed and ten years after the Cuban missile crisis, the United
States, in conjunction with the USSR, signed the ABM Treaty. The ABM treaty was designed to
regulate the number of anti ballistic missile systems, or defense shields, of both the United States and
the Soviet Union to two, and later agree ments brought that number down to one. (Winkler 1999, 187)
It did nothing, however, to regulate the number of missiles a state could possess.
During all this time, however, US Soviet relations remained tense. The Ameri can government taught
the American people to live in fear of a possible pre emptive nuclear strike by the Soviets. According
to author Allan Winkler, this is when then President Ronald Reagan began to design his Strategic

A Class Divided Reflection
Diversity in Society
Everyone is likely to experience some form of discrimination or prejudice; as is anyone capable of
acting prejudiced towards others. On April 5th, 1968, a teacher in Riceville, Iowa named Jane Elliot
conducted an experiment with her third grade class that dealt with the concept of discrimination; and
was documented in Peters 1985 A Class Divided . The exercise originally took place the day after
Martin Luther King was assassinated. The documentary is an eye opener to the world of racism and
discrimination. Bucher (2010) describes racism as discrimination based on the belief that one race is

their children, like one brown eyed boy s father had done the prior week. But when blue eyed Russell
forgot his glasses the following day, it had to be because he has blue eyes, since Susan, whom has
brown eyes, remembered her glasses. Elliot also led the children to decide that since blue eyed Greg
said he likes to hit his litter sister, this conveys blue eyed people are naughty. From here, we witness
some of superior blue eyed kids began to act arrogant and bossy to the inferior brown eyed kids. Blue

After the two boys fought at recess the teacher asked if responding with violence made him feel better,
he replied no. His answer goes to show that responding with violence is ineffective and a waste of
time and energy. They compared it to someone calling a black man the N word. Even academic
achievement goes up when the children were in the superior group. When doing the card packs the

superior blue eyed children spent only three minutes, the following day the superior group of brown

The Reverend Scoresby Identity
The Reverend claims the very best thing a man can have is to be born lucky. This is true based on his
interactions with Scoresby. Scoresby was a complete woodenhead, as the Reverend stated. However,
this woodenhead was so successful in the military despite the myriad amount of flaws he made. His
personality and knowledge were fraught with stupidity and ignorance but no one seemed to be aware
of this fact. They were all unconscious of Scoresby s fame in disguise. Throughout the story, Scoresby
s successes were just products of luck and this confirms why being born lucky is such a phenomenal
and miraculous thing to acquire. Although Scoresby did seem to be a genius during the
commencement of his popularity, the experiences the Reverend had soon exposed Scoresby s true

The Effects Of Mercury In The Great Lakes
The Effects of Mercury and its Appearance in the Great Lakes While liquid gold may be a modern
allegory for something desirable, there is another liquid metal that is quite the opposite of desirable.
Mercury is an unusual metal in that in its standard elemental form it is a liquid. Due to the increase in
industry over the last 100 years, Mercury levels have risen, which cause serious damage to humans.
There are three different chemical forms that mercury exists in and each has a specific effect on
human health, however for the purpose of this paper only two will be talked about. The first is
elemental mercury (Hg), which also called metallic mercury. In this form the primary health effect is
when it is breathes as vapor where it can be absorbed through the lungs. Symptoms of this kind
include tremors, emotional changes, insomnia, neuromuscular changes, headaches, disturbances in
sensations, changes in nerve responses, and performance deficits on tests of cognitive functions. At
higher doses there can be kidney effects, respiratory failure, and even death. In this form it is emitted

leading man made source of mercury in the Great Lakes. It is released into the air and transported by
air currents and will eventually fall and be deposited in soil or water. This is particularly important to
the people living in Michigan because in Detroit the mercury found in rain has been

The Constitutionalisation of the Treaties by the European Court of Justice Introduction
============ On it s formation in 1957 the European Economic Community Treaty[1] was
seemingly another international treaty to which the six original Member States[2] had signed. In the
realm of international law such treaties are binding merely on the governments of Member States
which have signed them. In it s essential provisions, the Treaty made reference only to the Member
States who themselves had no reason to believe this Treaty would be any different. However, it was
latent from the start that this Treaty had the potential to extend beyond the reach of previous
international treaties[3]. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The interpretation of Article 234 In Van Gend en Loos v Nederlandse Administratie der Balastigen[8],
the plaintiff, a Dutch firm, tried to invoke Article 12 (now 25)[9] of the EC Treaty before a Dutch
tribunal, the Tariefcommissie. Using the Article 234 procedure the Tariefcommissie referred two
questions to the Court. Firstly, Whether Article 12…has direct application within the territory of a
Member State, in other words, whether nationals of such a State can, on the basis of the article in
question, lay claim to individual rights which the courts must protect .[10] It was argued by the Dutch
and Belgian Governments that this reference concerned the application of the Treaty and not it s
interpretation as required by Article 234, and hence that the Court had no jurisdiction to consider it.
The query, they considered, as a matter of Dutch constitutional law, should be answered by the Dutch
national courts, subject to Articles 226 and 227, which allow the Commission and Member States to
challenge actions of other Member States. In a superficial holding that this reference related to
interpretation only ,

Lady Gaga Stereotypes
Lady Gaga, an American singer songwriter, became widely known in 2009, after her single Just Dance
claimed the number one spot on song charts. Since then, she has released several number one songs,
taken home 6 Grammy Awards, 13 MTV Music Video Awards, and sold over 160 million albums and
singles worldwide. On June 18th, 2015, Lady Gaga received the first Contemporary Icon Award,
created to recognize artists who have become an icon in pop culture (Curtis). With her overwhelming
popularity, it is easy to see why Lady Gaga received this award. She represents the rebelliousness of
today s youth in her wild outfits and is a leader in the fight for gay rights. However, if time is taken to
dissect the context surrounding Lady Gaga, it turns out she is not as progressive as her iconic status
indicates. For example, while her Bad Romance music video may seem progressive in that it ... Show

One common stereotype in society today is that men are stronger and more dominant while women
are weaker and submissive. This stereotype is strongly reflected in the music video. When the camera
looks up to the men, they are put in a position of power. The upward camera angle makes them appear
bigger and more intimidating. All of the men wear black, which is symbolic for power. Similarly, all
of the men have prominent muscles and many of them have tattoos, showing how tough and strong
they are. The strength and dominating nature of the men is contrasted with the submissiveness of the
women, specifically, Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga is shown as weaker and submissive when the camera
looks down on her, making her look smaller from that angle. Lady Gaga s

The Function of Different Settings in A Doll s House and Twelfth Night
The setting comparison and deliberation in this essay is between Henric Ibsen s A Doll s House and
William Shakespeare s Twelfth Night . A Doll s House deals with the social life and duty, the woman s
proper place and role within the family and the society. Twelfth Night is about illusion, deception,
disguises, madness, and the extraordinary things that love will cause us to do and to see. The plot of
the Twelfth Night takes place in Illyria, the unreal, fairy land, the land of illusions and dreams. The
beauty and the lighthearted atmosphere of Illyria influence the characters of the play. Orsino, Duke of
Illyria, doesn t care about his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Only at the end of the third act the noticeable change in Nora s behavior shows us the emancipation of
women in the modern period, the change in their status and rights in the society.
In both plays music is very important. Listening to the songs, Orsino enjoys the situation of being in
love with Olivia. He doesn t realize that he is in love with love and not with her. This is why he needs
music. It sustains and calms down his stormy emotions, helps him to overcome the pain of unshared
love. In A Doll s house the Tarantella symbolizes Nora s agitation at her struggle with Krogstad and
with her husband. The piano with its black and white keys symbolizes the contrasts in the play
(between Nora and Mrs. Linden, Nora and Torvald, changing in Nora s behavior between the first and
the third acts). Songs, tarantella, piano and the bell rings all together are designated to brake tension
throughout the play. The doors are also the very important part of the setting in A Doll s House . They
make an illusion of the more rooms in the house and give the ides of the positive and negative issues
in the play. Nora enters and exits through the same door. This is a foreshadowing to the end of the
third act, where she exits from the house and Torvald s life through the same door she has entered
them before. When she goes to the door of Torvald s study and listens, it points to the gap in their
relationship and to the lack

Art Museum Analysis
When walking into the freshly built art museum of West Virginia University one can automatically
feel a sense of serenity. The spacing of the art pieces and the way the light hit them makes you want to
take your time and examine every detail each work has to offer. It gives you no other choice but to
give your full, undivided attention to one piece at a time. The way this museum was designed made it
so I almost forgot about the rest of my day. Where I had to be later, what class I had, when I had to be
in for work, all of those everyday thoughts and worries seemed to disappear when walking through
those doors.
The piece that really stood out to me was a work by Thomas Cole. Cole s piece caught my eye due to
the simplicity of it. He took something as simple as a landscape and made it extremely detailed and
organic. If you take the time to look closely you can almost see where he made each individual brush
stroke. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though those seem to be bold, you can see the delicate detail put into each section making the piece
flow beautifully. His strokes are smooth, yet uneven, giving the piece an interesting twist. The
background offers a somewhat ominous sky, using what seems to be only whites and greys. The
background seems to be the most muted part of the piece whereas the middle ground really grabs your
attention with its vibrant colors. Cole uses yellow and muted brown to pop against the hues of green in
the trees. These pops of color among the tree scape really make this the focal point of the piece. The
foreground offers a very earthy feel with a simplistic pasture. Broken colors of green and brown are
used to display the ongoing naturalistic feel this work displays. Towards the right of the piece you can
see some sort of animal. Cole being a famous American landscape artist would make it only obvious
to have animals in some of his

options for the meeting to consider. You may need to work with advocate who is acting on behalf of
the person, or you may need to consider engaging an independent advocate in order that the person
wishes can be effectively understood and explained at the meeting. Your agency may have a procedure
for engaging advocates. Where necessary make practical arrangements for a person to attend. This
could include ensuring accessibility of the meeting room, providing transport where necessary, or

Digital Image Of A Optical Signature Recognition 3.4.1 Offline Signature Recognition In this type of recognition, the text is not recognized at the same time as it is produced but after the user has finished writing. In this case, the text is originally written on a surface such as paper and from there on it is recognized by the computer by scanning the surface. In the scanned Signature is first stored digitally in grey scale format. bitmap image, and then further processing is done on it to have a good recognition accuracy. Features for recognition are enhanced and extracted from the stored bitmap image by using digital image processing. Offline signature recognition is known as Optical Signature Recognition (OCR), because the image of writing is converted into bit pattern by an optically digitizing device such as optical camera or scanner. The recognition is done on this bit pattern data for machine printed or hand written text [3]. Recognition of machine printed signatures is also a part of Optical Signature Recognition. In offline, methods are less suitable for man machine communication because no real time interactivity is present. It is suitable for automatic conversion of paper documents to electric documents, which then may be interpreted by computers. Some applications of the off line recognition are large scale data processing such as postal address reading; check sorting, office automation for text entry automatic inspection and identification [11]. 3.4.2 Online Signature Recognition In contrast to the offline ... • 5. The Causes Of Capitalism Capitalism has established what many others were unable to before; it has created a single economic system for the world (Johnston). This essay will illustrate the flaws in capitalism as viewed by Engels. It will define historical materialism, and will analyze the fundamental and secondary discrepancies in capitalism as mentioned by Engels. Lastly, the following paper will also demonstrate what Engels believes is the outcome of capitalism. In Engel s excerpt on Theoretical , Engel begins by describing historical materialism as a principle of production and exchange of products, which is the basis of every social order (Engels 293). Historical materialism analyzes the material conditions of society, how people produce and exchange items (Johnston). It is the way in which society is producing and exchanging goods that creates social relations as well as hierarchy (Johnston). Furthermore, the mode of production conditions social relations and one s consciousness. The way an individual perceives the world ultimately arises from our social and economic structures (Johnston). Society is further divided into social classes which is determined by what is produced, how it is produced, and how the product is exchanged (Johnston). The fundamental contradiction in capitalism as laid out by Engels is social production and individual appropriation. The fundamental contradiction is the idea that the capitalist appropriates the products that the working class create. The modern ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Transcontinental Airways History Flight has become romanticized by humanity, it provides Freedom . Throughout the majority human history, humans have used land and water for their transportation needs. The invention of the airplane opened the use of a third medium, air. Flight only has the illusion of freeing us from earth. Airplanes would not be able to maintain flight without their ground based systems. These systems are arranged along flight corridors or airways. The Transcontinental Airway was the first major flight corridor constructed in the United States. The airways crossed nearly every type of terrain the country has. The manner of lights installed and where they were installed was dictated by the individual challenges of the terrain of each airway. It is hard to pin a date as to when the airway system was phased out. There was no sweeping change to cause their disappearance. Small incremental changes and advances in technology made them obsolete. Today remnants of the system still exist throughout the country, primarily in the west where development pressures were lower. • 9. Relationship Between The United States And Black America The relationship between the United States and Black America can best be compared to an unbalanced scale. Some would argue that the majority take regular advantage of the minority, creating a distinct schism between the two groups. The actions taken by each group adversely shape the behavior of one another. While the oppressed lash out because of the unfair conditions of society, the oppressors continue to dish out what they consider to be the appropriate punishment. The oppressed continue to become marginalized and therefore begin to lose hope for the future, often turning to lifestyles that would otherwise be considered to be dysfunctional and self destructive. In terms of the aforementioned, unbalanced scale, Black America continues to be outweighed in favor for the desires and wants of the majority, White America. This cycle can best be described by the term nihilism, which shares similar Latin roots with other English words such as annihilate or null , meaning a pervasive sense of hopelessness and despair that characterizes many parts of contemporary black American life (West, 1993). In his writing, Nihilism in Black America, Cornel West argues that nihilism acts as a disease to black Americans, in that today s disproportionate corporate markets have led black Americans to live pleasure filled lives; neglecting values of love, care, and service once handed down by generation s past (West,1993). The Perception of African Americans in the Media and How it Affects Their Self Identity There has been much debate over the perception of African Americans in the media and how it affects their self identity. A case can even be made that the amount of media presence by African Americans, whether biased or un biased, has greatly helped to unify and give voice to a small minority group. In 1865 some headway was gained when the Thirteenth Amendment was passed, outlawing slavery and establishing a Freedmen s Bureau to assist former slaves. Also in 1865 Union General, William T. Sherman issued a field order setting aside 40 acre plots of land in Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida for African Americans to settle. Yet, in 1866, all white legislatures in the former Confederate states passed the, so called, Black Codes sharply cutting the freedom of African Americans and virtually re enslaving the race. Since that time there have been many gains and set backs for African Americans. Some of the ways that I would evaluate the individual RFPs would be to analyze the product by conducting a due diligence plan (Plan, 2011). The components involved in this process consist of looking at demonstrations, conducting site visits, and doing check references (Oachs Watters, 2016) (Plan, 2011). By looking at demonstrations, (whether they d be vendor fairs or individual presentations) it gives the potential users the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the system and thus makes the users feel part of the whole process (Plan, 2011). Additionally, demonstrations allow for easy side to side system comparison which also eases the evaluation process. By doing so, it can help the vendor have a clearer understanding of what the facility s specific requirements are (Amatayakul, 2013). Furthermore, conducting site visits, allows the project team to get real feedback about how the staff feels with new system and allows the potential buyer to see the system in action (Oachs Watters, 2016). Furthermore, I would use reference checks to check the credibility of the vendor (StratisHealth, Analysis, RFP, 2009). In order for Gillette to compete with online competitors, all four of these elements need to be addressed in a way that will benefit the company and market the product effectively. Additionally, the caged parrot in the beginning of the story is symbolic of Edna s growing frustrations about her lack of comfort. The parrot exclaims, Allez vous en! Sapristi!, (1) which translates to, Go away! For God s sake! These words are directed at Léonce, representative of Edna voicing her anger at her husband because he trapped her in the cage of maternal responsibilities that she wants to be freed from. Edna s need of certainty her search for comfort is partly the cause of her demise in the end. The third basic human need is growth. This is signified by a sense of development both physically and mentally. Everyone, toddler or adult, is continually growing. This is a universal interest because people instinctively want to learn, and Edna is no different. Her progression through the novella is a, sort of, second adolescence. Adolescence is the period in life when people begin to grow and individualize themselves, and it is no doubt that in The Awakening, Edna is trying to grow her wings ... • 24. Jeremy In The Wild Analysis I just want to start off by saying that I really enjoyed watching survivor this year. The show is unscripted and completely in the wild. This means there are very limited cultural influences of the contestants and we, as viewers, get to see firsthand the actions and the thoughts of the contestants. Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes, and survivor provides a prime real life example for us to do this. I just want to get it out there now that I think Keith should ve won, however, I think Jeremy is still a very worthy winner. There were several ways that players chose to outwit, outlast, and outplay this season that can all be illustrated by psychological principles. Examples of these include: Hindsight bias, ... Scott Heron first recorded it for his 1970 album Small Talk at 125th and Lenox, on which he recited the lyrics, accompanied by congas and bongo drums. The message of the song is the elusive nature of political culture in Nixons America and the inability of the mainstream to capture the real heart of the people. Heron uses cultural refrences from the 1970s to express his angerin the 1970s. • 28. Cultural And Cultural Diversity In Hey Arnold As a kid, watching television was one of my favorite things to do. It seemed as if when the TV was on, the world stopped moving for an hour or two. There were many shows from my childhood that helped shape me into the person I am today, but the one that stood out amongst the rest was Hey Arnold. The hit 90 s show Hey Arnold enculturated children through illustrating social acceptance, self confidence, and displaying resilience through hardships. As a young child growing up in the late 90s/early 00s, Hey Arnold helped me become a more culturally and socially accepting individual through the consistent exposure of different ethnicities and family structures. For example, Arnold s grandparents housed two immigrants Mr. Hyunh from Vietnam and Oskar Kokoshka from Czechoslovakia. These two men from two entirely different cultural backgrounds were able to share a home, as well as guide Arnold through several issues he faced growing up. Arnold showed a full capacity of love and acceptance for these men s diverse race and backgrounds. Another example of the ethnic diversity in Hey Arnold is Arnold s friends. His best friend Gerald, a young sporty African American boy, Phoebe a young Japanese American girl, and his Jewish friend Harold are prime examples of the cultural and racial diversity the show displayed. None of these characters were treated poorly or persecuted based on race or culture. In the episode Harold s Bar Mitzvah , Harold is forced to abandon his friends ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The children are judged on their personalities, goals, and outfits. This does not seem so bad at first glance and really it is not. The problem starts when children are put in make up padded bras high heels and swim suits then sent down a catwalk with hundreds of people looking at them. This is where child beauty pageants cross the line. Along with the fact various aspects of the beauty pageants stunt growth cause emotional problems and eating disorders, child beauty pageants exploit children. Whether you think child beauty pageants are a chance for little girls to play dress up, or a training ground self centered brats, everyone should agree that sexualizing a 3 year old little girl is wrong. The problem with many child beauty pageants is that they over sexualize children. many pageants include swimsuit sections or have children wearing padded bras to make themselves more appealing to judges. Summary Of Let There Be Dark By Paul Bogard In this analysis, we will thematically analyze Paul Bogard s Let There Be Dark , a newspaper article in the Los Angeles Times published on December 21st 2012. In terms of a purpose, we must make the distinction between convincing and persuading. In my opinion, Bogard aims to persuade push for action via emotional appeals his readers of the growing dangers of light pollution as opposed to natural darkness. After he presents his main argument, Bogard also sets forth some solutions to the problems to convince the reader that there is still hope. Bogard s reliance on anecdotes from the past suggests this article is targeted primarily towards adults, as they are the ones who can most relate with them. Throughout the article, Bogard uses logos, pathos, and ethos to persuade the reader of his argument. This includes employing vivid language, facts, logical reasoning, emotional appeals, and anecdotes. We will begin by analyzing how Bogard uses logos to convey his point. Bogard first uses logos when he mentions how 8 of 10 children (Bogard line 3) in the United States will never know true darkness. This suggests that natural darkness is decreasing, thus setting the premise for Bogard s argument. This statistic is effective because Bogard uses it to set a sharp contrast between past and present generations. The main argument begins by Bogard referring to how some major medical institutions, such as the World Health Organization, have acknowledged the harmful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Organic Foods Vs Organic Food As the world continues to embrace health and fitness living and as the levels of environmental awareness increase, so does the popularity of organic foods continue to skyrocket. According to a recent survey conducted by a renowned body in the United States, more than forty percent of the US consumers are now taking the organic foods path over the inorganic, and it seems that this new wave is not going away anytime soon. According to most of the users, organic food is much tastier, safer, helps to prevent environmental exploitation and on top of it all boasts more nutritional value than inorganic food (Thøgersen 172). However, there is no difference in dietary levels between organic and inorganic food, and this discussion examines what sets these two categories apart and why their nutritional levels are the same. Organic food is any product produced by a farming system which does not incorporate the use of human made fertilizers and pesticides, livestock feed additives or growth regulators. According to Cooper, Leifert, and Ursula (45), organic food uses natural methods of agriculture which aim at giving a product which is environmentally friendly, economically viable and also socially healthy. For instance below are some of the practices which organic farmers engage in to ensure that they meet this objective (Harper and Aikaterini 290). Any good businessman understands one thing if he understands nothing else that customer service is vitally important to the continued survival of a company. In fact, ask any small business owner the secret of his success and the answer will usually have something to do with customer service. You can have the greatest product in the world, but if you don t work on customer service making the customer s experience as good as it can be then you are not going to sell very much. The Effects Of Mercury In The Great Lakes The Effects of Mercury and its Appearance in the Great Lakes While liquid gold may be a modern allegory for something desirable, there is another liquid metal that is quite the opposite of desirable. Mercury is an unusual metal in that in its standard elemental form it is a liquid. Due to the increase in industry over the last 100 years, Mercury levels have risen, which cause serious damage to humans. There are three different chemical forms that mercury exists in and each has a specific effect on human health, however for the purpose of this paper only two will be talked about. The first is elemental mercury (Hg), which also called metallic mercury. In this form the primary health effect is when it is breathes as vapor where it can be absorbed through the lungs. Symptoms of this kind include tremors, emotional changes, insomnia, neuromuscular changes, headaches, disturbances in sensations, changes in nerve responses, and performance deficits on tests of cognitive functions. At higher doses there can be kidney effects, respiratory failure, and even death. In this form it is emitted into the air from coal fired power plants, waste incinerators, smelting plants, which is by far the leading man made source of mercury in the Great Lakes. The query, they considered, as a matter of Dutch constitutional law, should be answered by the Dutch national courts, subject to Articles 226 and 227, which allow the Commission and Member States to challenge actions of other Member States. • 44. Lady Gaga Stereotypes Lady Gaga, an American singer songwriter, became widely known in 2009, after her single Just Dance claimed the number one spot on song charts. Since then, she has released several number one songs, taken home 6 Grammy Awards, 13 MTV Music Video Awards, and sold over 160 million albums and singles worldwide. On June 18th, 2015, Lady Gaga received the first Contemporary Icon Award, created to recognize artists who have become an icon in pop culture (Curtis). With her overwhelming popularity, it is easy to see why Lady Gaga received this award. She represents the rebelliousness of today s youth in her wild outfits and is a leader in the fight for gay rights. However, if time is taken to dissect the context surrounding Lady Gaga, it turns out she is not as progressive as her iconic status indicates. For example, while her Bad Romance music video may seem progressive in that it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One common stereotype in society today is that men are stronger and more dominant while women are weaker and submissive. This stereotype is strongly reflected in the music video. When the camera looks up to the men, they are put in a position of power. The upward camera angle makes them appear bigger and more intimidating. All of the men wear black, which is symbolic for power. Similarly, all of the men have prominent muscles and many of them have tattoos, showing how tough and strong they are. The strength and dominating nature of the men is contrasted with the submissiveness of the women, specifically, Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga is shown as weaker and submissive when the camera looks down on her, making her look smaller from that angle. Lady Gaga s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. The Function of Different Settings in A Doll s House and... The Function of Different Settings in A Doll s House and Twelfth Night The setting comparison and deliberation in this essay is between Henric Ibsen s A Doll s House and William Shakespeare s Twelfth Night . A Doll s House deals with the social life and duty, the woman s proper place and role within the family and the society. Twelfth Night is about illusion, deception, disguises, madness, and the extraordinary things that love will cause us to do and to see. The plot of the Twelfth Night takes place in Illyria, the unreal, fairy land, the land of illusions and dreams. The beauty and the lighthearted atmosphere of Illyria influence the characters of the play. Orsino, Duke of Illyria, doesn t care about his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Only at the end of the third act the noticeable change in Nora s behavior shows us the emancipation of women in the modern period, the change in their status and rights in the society. In both plays music is very important. Listening to the songs, Orsino enjoys the situation of being in love with Olivia. He doesn t realize that he is in love with love and not with her. This is why he needs music. It sustains and calms down his stormy emotions, helps him to overcome the pain of unshared love. In A Doll s house the Tarantella symbolizes Nora s agitation at her struggle with Krogstad and with her husband. The piano with its black and white keys symbolizes the contrasts in the play (between Nora and Mrs. Linden, Nora and Torvald, changing in Nora s behavior between the first and the third acts). Songs, tarantella, piano and the bell rings all together are designated to brake tension throughout the play. The doors are also the very important part of the setting in A Doll s House . They make an illusion of the more rooms in the house and give the ides of the positive and negative issues in the play. Nora enters and exits through the same door. This is a foreshadowing to the end of the third act, where she exits from the house and Torvald s life through the same door she has entered them before. When she goes to the door of Torvald s study and listens, it points to the gap in their relationship and to the lack ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Art Museum Analysis When walking into the freshly built art museum of West Virginia University one can automatically feel a sense of serenity. The spacing of the art pieces and the way the light hit them makes you want to take your time and examine every detail each work has to offer. It gives you no other choice but to give your full, undivided attention to one piece at a time. The way this museum was designed made it so I almost forgot about the rest of my day. Where I had to be later, what class I had, when I had to be in for work, all of those everyday thoughts and worries seemed to disappear when walking through those doors. The piece that really stood out to me was a work by Thomas Cole. Cole s piece caught my eye due to the simplicity of it. He took something as simple as a landscape and made it extremely detailed and organic. If you take the time to look closely you can almost see where he made each individual brush stroke. ... His strokes are smooth, yet uneven, giving the piece an interesting twist. The background offers a somewhat ominous sky, using what seems to be only whites and greys. The background seems to be the most muted part of the piece whereas the middle ground really grabs your attention with its vibrant colors. Cole uses yellow and muted brown to pop against the hues of green in the trees. These pops of color among the tree scape really make this the focal point of the piece. The foreground offers a very earthy feel with a simplistic pasture. Broken colors of green and brown are used to display the ongoing naturalistic feel this work displays. Towards the right of the piece you can see some sort of animal. Cole being a famous American landscape artist would make it only obvious to have animals in some of his ...
