The Field Of American Studies
In this essay, I will examine the field of American Studies and attempt to explain its ever changing
definition. I will take the reader through the origins of American Studies and describe the events that
led to changes in the discipline.
The scholars in American Studies are constantly seeking to understand the practices by individuals
and groups and their history of origin. Scholars struggle to understand how values and beliefs shape
social and political realities within the U.S. and other countries. American Studies is an
interdisciplinary study that explores cultures of the United States as well as their transnational
exchanges and impact.
In the words of Staurt Hall, he finds in American culture and in America s capacity to live with
difference the best illustration of a continuous dialect between the local and the global, between the
insular and the transnational. He defines culture as an embodiment of the best that has been thought
and said in a society. It is the sum of the great ideas as represented in the classic works of painting,
music, and philosophy that represent culture. (Hall, 9) Hall also has observed U.S. dominance in
communication and described America as the common factor of globalization.
The field of American Studies began in what may be called a single beginning with multiple origins.
The beginning of the American Studies Association in late 1951 and early 1952 and the beginning of
the journal, American Quarterly at the University of Minnesota in

Essay on Drugs and Bronchospasms
Drugs and Bronchospasms
Bronchospasms induced by drugs can be managed beneficially through knowledge of causative agents
and knowledge on treatment of the disease. Bronchospasms are an excessive and prolonged
contraction of the smooth muscle of the bronchi and bronchioles, resulting in an acute narrowing and
obstruction of the respiratory airway. The contractions may be localized or general and may be caused
by irritation or injury to the respiratory mucosa, infections, or allergies or drugs. A cough with
generalized wheezing usually indicates the condition. Bronchospasm is a chief characteristic of
asthma 2 and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD).

A Story To Write A Short Story
Sirens could be heard from all over the city. The news was on in every house, reporters saying
Convicted of robbery, Emily Stanford seen running down the streets of New York. The last we saw her
was she was heading down to the bus stations. If anyone has any information on where she is going
please call the police station. Emily ran towards the train station desperate to get there before the
police caught up to her. She walked up to the line and waited impatiently. Every sound made her on
edge, when it was finally her turn she pulled her hood closer to her face. One ticket for Cold Spring
please. Emily said quickly, the lady in the ticket booth gave her her ticket and directed her to the bus
platform. Emily quickly and quietly walked over to the bus and took her seat. A few hours later the
bus stopped and announced its destination, Emily got off the bus and walked quickly down the street
looking for any opportunity to get somewhere to sleep without getting noticed. She walked past a TV
shop and in the window the TV was playing. The same news playing from earlier that day, she wished
every thing would just disappear and leave her alone for at least one day. She eventually found a small
quiet motel, she got a nice room. After she got settled into the room she got the things she needed out
of her backpack. She walked into the bathroom and got her hair damp and applied the hair dye. While
waiting for her hair to dry she did her makeup, she covered up her freckles.

Gardner Versus Traditional Teaching Methods Rhetorical...
Gardner vs Traditional Teaching Methods Mr. Gardner expresses the theory that students should first
learn how to understand a few important subjects and be able to decipher unique situations rather than
just memorize facts for standardized tests. He builds his argument eloquently using mainly logos and
ethos as his persuasive methods. He uses logos by making the reader think logically and digest not
only his opinion, but the opinion of other experts. As for ethos, Mr. Gardner impresses upon the reader
that he has a wealth of knowledge and an extensive background in the subject of education.
Professor Gardner presents logos by quoting psychologists and educators, usage of historical analysis,
and real world examples. This forces the reader to think about their own experiences and how they
were taught and what teaching style would be best for their own children or themselves. He believes
that students should learn to appreciate multiple perspectives about a subject and rid themselves of
their simplistic misconceptions (Gardner 634). However, wiping the mental slate clean he says, is not
a simple task and he furthers his point using logos in paraphrasing Lauren Resnick , disconfirming
experiences do not always suffice to dissolve faulty conceptions and ... Show more content on

He consistently makes references to himself working at Harvard, consequently establishing ethos and
allowing the reader to infer that he has a strong background in various teaching methods. He also
discusses his own publication; The Unschooled Mind saying that he had previously done a vast body
of research on students at Ivy League schools (Gardner 626). His ethos is reinforced by this example
because of the caliber of this research and the fact that he had a book published on how the top

Jainism Is An Environmentally Responsible Way Of Life
Mahavira said, All of life is just like me. I want to live. So do all souls, all living beings. The instinct
of self preservation is universal. Every animate being clings to life and fears death. Each of us wants
to be free from pain. So let me carry out all of my activities with great care not to be harmful to any
living being (as cited in Rosenfield Segall). Jainism is an ecologically responsible way of life, which
is non violent in thoughts, actions, and deeds (Pecorino, 2001). The heart of Jainism is to live and
practice ahimsa. This is the action by which all actions are judged (ahimsa| Britannica.com, 2015).
The Golden Rule, if you will. The Jain s believe that life is eternal. That all living souls have the
potential of attaining enlightenment and immortality (Raghuram, 2004). If you interrupt the spiritual
progress or jiva of an insect, animal, plant or person, you will incur karma (ahimsa | Britannica.com,
2015). Your karma will affect your samsara, and will determine your next incarnation. The purpose in
one s life is to attain liberation from the samsara cycle. Why are we drawn to the many different facets
of violence that we experience in our lives? Is violence a learned behavior or has it become a part of
our evolutionary progression. As hunters and gatherers, we used violence for survival. Now, it seems
that humans react with violence to resolve multiple types of conflict. Is it just primal instinct? Does
our subconscious fight or flight control the way

The Enchanted Bluff Essay example
The Enchanted Bluff
The Enchanted Bluff , by Willa Cather, takes place in the bare cornfields of Nebraska during the early
1900 s where only rivers liven up the landscape. Six boys delve into the idea of a city on top of a bluff
in the desert, they become captivated with the idea of visiting the bluff. The boys eagerly discuss ways
of dominating this mystifying bluff: throwing up a ladder, or using a rocket. All the boys vow to get to
the bluff some day. Twenty years pass and none visit it. One of the young boys tells the story to his
son and his son thinks of nothing else but the bluff. The author does an excellent job of providing
vivid imagery throughout the story, which helps the read to capture a real sense of the town. ... Show

The reader gets a sense of how the boys lived when Cather mentions how, Tip worked hard in his
father s grocery store every afternoon, and swept it out before school in the morning, even his
recreations were laborious (Cather 413). When reading Cather s works, there is a feeling that she
taught the best of all philosophies, that of love, hard work, and courage (Wells) . Through the tone of
this story, the reader easily senses that this old fashioned town run with hard work and honesty is
careless. The author does an excellent job of describing individuals in the town such as, Percy Pound
who took half a dozen boys story papers and was always kept in reading detective stories behind the
desk (Cather 413). Cather s writing style shows an unhampered zest for enjoyment (Wells). The reader
gets the feeling that the character Percy Pound is a young laid back inquisitive boy who likes
adventures. Willa Cather not only uses local color to show descriptions of the characters in the story
but also in conveying the setting.
Willa Cather provides vivid imagery throughout the story to set the relaxed tone. The reader imagines
a very descriptive portrait of the boys hometown when the story mentions how the oblique rays of the
light made a dazzling glare on the white sand about us (Cather 411). Realities and fantasies...her art is
a method of preserving the wonder of youthful happiness (Wells). When reading this Willa Cather
paints a vivid portrait of where the six

Psycho Dynamic Concepts And Therapies
Throughout the years and despite the endless scientific research, many have come to believe that
psycho dynamic concepts and therapies are not as effective as other therapies. However, Shedler
(2010) believes that the misconception of the ineffectiveness of psycho dynamic concepts and
therapies are mainly because of the distaste that exists in the mental health professions due to the
hierarchical medical establishment that used to deny training to non MDs and adopted a dismissive
stance towards research (Shedler, pg. 98, 2010). As a result, research was disregarded and the spot
light was placed on the emerging new therapies that were widely welcomed by the academicians
whilst the psycho dynamic therapies received very limited attention. ... Show more content on

These concepts aid the client to become aware and explore aspects of themselves that are not aware
of. The therapy sessions are not as frequent as those of other therapies and treatment is not limited to a
particular number of visit. Psychodynamic therapy does not only focus on relieving the client s
presenting problem, but also positively influence other aspects of the client s life: relationships, self
esteem, satisfying sexual experiences, understanding of self and others while encouraging self
discovery, just to make a few. Psychodynamic therapy assists the client in uncovering the layers of one
s self and allowing the client to reach deeper within them for healing.
When applying the theory to practice, a clinician yields for results by overall assessing the client s
current wellbeing and comparing that to the original baseline. A meta analytic review by Shedler
(2010), explores and confirms the effectiveness of Psychodynamic therapy. Shedler (2010) found in a
study by Abbass, Hancock, Henderson, Kisely, 2006), that clients who received short term psycho
dynamic therapy yield a 0.97 effect size and post treatment 9 month follow up showed an effect size

related components. The skill related components of fitness (speed, power, agility, balance, reaction

for the development of better health. Soccer players need a combination of aerobic and anaerobic
fitness due to the nature of the game and the fact that there is continuous movement with lots of short

some require more aerobic fitness. A midfield player is required to cover a lot of ground during a

The Stop-Question and Frisk Program
The black or white, either or and this or that misconceptions that are common in conversations with
children seems to be arising over the Stop and Frisk Law in New York City. It has long been an issue
of debate over whether it is a form of practicing racial profiling since its implementation. Arguments
between advocates and critics of the law appear to be so incompatible that people are simply taking
sides rather than trying to push the discussion forward. Frankly, supporters and protestors of the
practice have established their opinions with incomplete information and lack of adequate critical
reasoning. While those in favor have failed to admit to the apparent existence of racial profiling, those
who are against the law only focus on racial profiling and do not participate in the broader discussion
of whether or not it actually brings safety to the city. The conversation might be able to move forward
if both sides were to emphasize on the most crucial issue of whether safety trumps civil rights.
The Stop Question and Frisk Program, more commonly known as stop and frisk or 250s, authorizes
police to stop and question pedestrians and frisk them for weapons or other contrabands. This practice
is based on the decision of the United States Supreme Court form the case of Terry v. Ohio. The
holding establishes that if there is reasonable suspicion that the person may be dangerous or armed,
police can stop him or her without violating the Fourth Amendment, which prohibits

providing job security and great wages, Lincoln was able to give his employees what they wanted.
Even stockholders, despite being listed by James as least important, still benefited from James strategy
because taking care of customers and employees first naturally increased the company s profitability.
Increased profitability is what every stockholder wants.
Sharplin found that the Lincoln Electric Company completed performance evaluations twice a year

the categories, Quality, Dependability, Ideas Cooperation, and Output. This gives employees and
managers two formal times a year that they can communicate issues and

The Current Product Development Process
Secondly, the current product development process needs a timely interaction among different
departments in order to detect problems in a relatively early period of the process; the traditional
approach would not meet this needs (Yelkur et al., 1996). Thus, the new product development team is
required to be made up of members from different background, such as engineering, marketing, and
management, so that they may work closely in introducing new products. As a result, the democratic
atmosphere of the work place is crucial for the process. Amabile (1998) and Amabile et al. (1999)
argue that freedom in processes promotes their motivation and helps employees make the most of their
expertise.

Three kinds of unique features contribute to the IDEO s philosophy of fail often to succeed sooner .
Firstly, the quick prototyping enables the project team to make mistakes to find the appropriate
solutions. In other words, it is similar to the method of trial and error, and follows the principles of the
three R s : Rough, Rapid and Right. This is supported by some experience of IDEO. During the early

lot so that the early prototypes are crude, which would not waste the precious time. In addition, instant

and members in the project are actively participated. The playroom atmosphere in IDEO ensures the
instant communication between members to exchange latest insights and ideas, which would enhance
their understanding of the ongoing project, because democratic environment boosts the effectiveness

What Is The Love Between Romeo And Juliet
William Shakespeare is best known for his drama The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. The love story of
Romeo and Juliet is a tragic drama, because everybody dies at the end.The fact that Romeo and Juliet
had to keep their love a secret, Is the ultimate reason of their deaths, this is because they came from
feuding families, They knew their love would be complicated, and new lovers came into the picture.
Romeo and Juliet are lovers, but their families are feuding enemies.
In Act 2, Scene 2, Romeo and Juliet are talking about denying their family, that way they can be
together. Juliet says Deny thy father and refuse thy name, and I ll no longer be a Capulet (34

In the play, Act 2 is where most of the love is introduced. In Act 2, Scene 2, the lovers are making a

if they have to marry secretly, their relationship will continue to be complicated. When the lovers
realize their love will never be normal , ending everything becomes a better option.
Problems with the love between Romeo and Juliet quickly escalate. One problem that comes into play
is that, Juliet s family finds someone to love, meanwhile
She is in love with a Montague. In Act 3, Scene 4, Capulet and Paris, which is Juliet s new interested
lover, are discussing Paris marrying Juliet. Paris says to Capulet, Commend me to your daughter (9).
Knowing that Capulet will favor Paris more than he ever would Romeo, makes Juliet upset. This
makes Juliet realize that killing herself will be a better option, than marrying someone she doesn t

Four hundred and fifty one years ago, a king was born. This king would be the ruler of not only
Scotland, but England as well. He would have seven children with his wife, and he would be a great
ruler. King James and his lineage is associated throughout the story of Macbeth.
King James was born on June 19, 1566 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Known as James VI, he was the king
of Scotland until 1625. He was the first Stuart king of England from 1603 to 1625 who would be
followed in throne by Charles I. James was the son of Mary and Henry Stewart; His father, Henry, was
the Duke of Albany. Mary was the Queen of Scots. Matthew Stewart, fourth Earl of Lennox, and
Margaret Douglas were the parents of Henry Stewart. James also had a second pair of grandparents,
James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise. Anne, the daughter of Frederick II of Denmark, married
James in 1589. Five years later they had a baby boy, Prince Henry; however, he died fourteen months
later. James and Anne had Elizabeth in 1596 and Margaret two years later. Then came Robert, born in
1601, Mary in 1605 and lastly Sophia in 1607, all of these last three children ... Show more content on

fourteen; He was very intelligent and was not shy to share his smarts with others. In 1582, James was
kidnapped by William Ruthven, First Earl of Gowrie. A year later he escaped and returned to his rule
of king. James became head of the Presbyterian church in Scotland in 1584. King James did a very
good job at ending the war quickly between ENgland and Spain in 1604. In 1611, James dissolved the

African Influence On American Culture
The African Art is one of the most wide ranging as well as non definitive forms in the world of
literature and art. African art is known for its simple, primitive and unsophisticated attributes. The
African art left its legacy on the European as well as American artists. The African art attracted many
prominent European artists such as Henry Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Many of their artworks reflect
the African influence that inspired them so much. There is a very close association between Africa and
Latin America as far as cultural and artistic legacy is concerned. In the history, especially in around
15th century the Africans migrated from the continent to South America, which is also called Latin
America.

The evidence to this statement is the influence of African art on the most popular artistic movements
of the last century. Among the artistic moments some of the popular movements are Cubism,
Modernism and Geometric art. Cubism was among the most popular visual art form of early twentieth
century that was created by Pablo Picasso. Later on Picasso expressed Cubism through Primitive
African art form. Modernism is one more important movements which was inclined towards
abstraction. The artists were supported for this abstraction from African art. The Geometric art form,
one more abstract form could also been presented with the inspiration from African art. African art is
recognized among the artistic circles as an aesthetic form. Along with fine art, the African culture
influenced the performing art form in Latin America. For example the steps of the Salsa dance have
been inspired by African tribal folk dance form. The music in Latin America has the shade of African
culture. Thus Latin Americans took many artistic forms from African culture.
The abstract and expressionistic art, emerged in the land of America, was based on the African
ironical, symbolical and colourful gesture. Thus the modern art form were inspired by the free spirit of
the African art. Leaving aside their sophistication, the artists in the land of Latin America explored
their creativity to the ultimate extent. It helped them

Explain Why The Law Should Require People To Wear Seatbelts
The Law Should Require People to Wear Seat Belts
The law states that if you are caught not wearing a seat belt you could get fined up to five hundred
dollars. The law should require people to wear seat belts. The law should require people to wear seat
belts because it prevents people from getting killed or injured, it would make people want to wear seat
belts while driving, and it would encourage passengers or other people to wear seat belts. The law
should require people to wear seat belts because it prevents people from getting injured or killed in car

people who have died in car accidents were not wearing a seat belt. Many people that

The Role Of Destruction In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
To be able to cause destruction is one similarity that all entities in nature can relate to. But to be able
to wreak havoc and reflect back on one s actions thereafter is an action that may be the only trait
humans have that distinguishes them from the rest of the animals of the world. Why are humans so
dominant and powerful on Earth? Is it because they have the ability accept their vices and grow as a
whole? In Pensées, Blaise Pascal, the famous child prodigy from France, connected to this idea when
he wrote Man s greatness comes from knowing he is wretched: a tree does not know it is wretched.
Thus it is wretched to know that one is wretched, but there is greatness in knowing one is wretched .

Hurdle And Gerrit Cole In Major League Baseball
Imagine it is the final game of the Major League Baseball (MLB) season in the seventh inning of an
interleague game between the National League (NL) Pittsburgh Pirates and the American League (AL)
Toronto Blue Jays. Gerrit Cole is pitching for the hometown Pirates and is having an exceptional
game, allowing only one unearned run. The Jays lead 1 0 and Gerrit Cole is up next to bat. The
question then for General Manager, Clint Hurdle, is whether to pinch hit for him in exchange for a
better hitter, or to leave him in the game so he can continue to pitch. If only there was a way to keep
Cole in the game, while having someone like Pedro Alvarez; a non everyday starter who can hit the
ball, pinch hit and give their team the best chance to win ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What it comes down to is the difference between the need to do something and the option to do
something. None other than Bill James, a widely known baseball writer, noted that the perceived
strategy is actually very trite, predictable, and actually nonstrategic. Instead of manager s deciding on
what substitution, or lack thereof, can give their team an advantage, they are forced with situations in
which they must bunt, must pinch hit, and must double switch. As James notes, the American League
game allows a true option, and thus true strategy. This means that whatever AL managers decide to do
when it comes to offensive batting substitutions, they do so to benefit their team, not because they are
forced to do so (Meehan, 2013). These substitutions, including the commonly used double switch
where a pinch hitter is substituted for the pitcher and the next inning is substituted again for a relief
pitcher, take up time in the game. It is significantly a problem in the MLB where the longevity and the
slow pace of the game has caused many fans to get bored sitting through a full nine innings.
Especially with the addition of instant replay, the game continues to get longer and it has become a
challenge for many fans to watch an entire game. Brian Costa, sports reporter for the Wall Street
Journal, wrote an article about the reasons for the length and slow pace of the game. He mentions that
it has become normal for fans to complain about hitters stepping out of the batter s box, pitchers
pacing around the mound and pitching changes. Red Sox Chief Operating Officer Sam Kennedy even
states that this problem is one of the most critical issues facing baseball as we move forward into the
next three, five, seven years (Costa, 2014). Joe Sheehan also wrote an article about the increasing

As a rough approximation, the client has average intellectual functioning (Hepworth, Rooney, Rooney,
Strom Gottfried, 2016). He graduated high school, served in the military, works as a security guard,
grasps complex concepts presented to him, and expresses the ability to analyze and think logically. He
is coherent and has valuable insight on himself and how his actions affect others (Graybeal, 2001).
There seems to be some problems with his reality testing and impulse control; when administered the
tests to measure these variable, the client showed some areas that could allow for improvement.
During the BORRTI test, the client stated that he has feelings he cannot explain, tries to ignore
unpleasant events, allows his mood to affect how he sees situations, and believes that people are
focused on him personally (WPS, 1995). This demonstrates that the client has some denial,
indecisiveness, and confusion about his internal self, and that there is a slight distortion occurring in
how he perceives other people (WPS, 1995). The UPPS P Short Impulsive Behavior Scale results
showed that the client is impulsive as well (Cyders et al., 2014). He stated that he tends to act without
thinking when he is excited, as he did when he purchased the motorcycle without first discussing it
with his wife. Even with slight reality distortion and impulse control, the client has excellent
judgment; he often reflects on the mistakes that he made and discusses how he would have acted

Compare Contrast
ONE IN THE SAME Due to the many similarities and very few differences, an alcoholic and a
workaholic can be considered as being one in the same. According to the medical dictionary a
workaholic is defined as one who has a compulsive and unrelenting need to work (The American
Heritage Stedman s Medical Dictionary). Although some people tend to confuse a hard worker for a
workaholic, some common characteristics that can distinguish the two are that workaholics are often
described as intense, impatient, energetic, competitive, and driven to perfection (Robinson 65). They
often blur the line between business and pleasure, and prefer work to leisure regardless of the time or

The Health assessment of an alcoholic is far worse as they can suffer from a number of health
complications and diseases that are associated with alcoholism such as liver disease, alcohol induced
pancreatitis, cancer and cardiovascular disease (Rehm136). Not to mention the many types of injuries
that be sustained while intoxicated, such as alcohol poisoning, broken limbs, or blackouts (137).
Once a person health and family life begin to become effected it should trigger an alarm that
something is not right. One of the major steps a workaholic must do to help cope with their problem is
to first, recognize that they indeed have a problem. A workaholic must be able to see that the real root
of all their problems is due to their unwavering need to constantly choose work over family and
leisure time. Once a workaholic recognizes and pinpoints the problem the next step would be for them
to accept that they have a problem. At this point it is likely that the workaholics close friends, family
and any others that may be affected come together to express their concerns and provide support to the
workaholic through a process called group intervention (Dungan 42). The goal of such an intervention
is to be able to break through the denial and emotions felt by the workaholic so that they can believe
in themselves and find strength within so that they may

A Memoir Of The Senses By Isabel Allende
If you like cooking, food, sex and humor then you will most definitely enjoy The Epicure s Lament by
Kate Christianson and Aphrodite: A Memoir of the Senses by Isabel Allende. I enjoyed both books for
the most part. More so Epicure s Lament than Aphrodite: A Memoir of the Senses. Here s my
breakdown of both books and how they differ and how they are similar. To start off both authors are
women. Although after reading both novels, both authors don t seem very similar to me. Christianson
comes off to me as more edgy and loose. And although her books extremely sexual, I think Allende s
is older, maybe middle age. The reason I think that is when I read this book I picture her as an older
cougar who knows just what she wants. I like Christianson better. She reminds me of myself and I
think she would be a lot of fun to hang out with. To be fair though I ve only read just these two books
by the authors. I do plan to read more of Christianson s work though.
I absolutely love Greek mythology. I actually took a Greek mythology class at Tidewater Community
College. So when I found out we had to read Aphrodite, I was extremely excited. Aphrodite is
supposed to be the goddess of love, desire and beauty. But this book is not about Greek mythology.
Although it does remind me Aphrodite with all the sexual stories and pictures. If there was a Greek
goddess that had to do with food and sex that would of been perfect for this book.
Allende s book is supposed to be a memoir but it s more of

How Does Petruchio Characterize In The Taming Of The Shrew
The Starving of the Shrew When training a falcon, the bird is often put on a diet so it will pay
attention to a lure. Though this process may be uncomfortable for the falcon, a regular diet is restored
when training is completed and a mutual relationship is formed between bird and falconer. Petruchio
in Shakespeare s comedy The Taming of the Shrew uses a similar method in the taming of Kate.
Petruchio deprives her of food until she shows signs of being tamed and ready for life together. Upon
finishing this jarring process, she is ready to live happily with Petruchio. Food signifies comfort and
happiness and is used to contrast Kate s life as a shrew and her life as a devoted wife. It shows that life

very uncomfortable for Kate, nearly starving her to death. However, she still holds on to her shrewish

Slavery Is An Important Part Of American History
Slavery is an important part of American history regardless of what generation you come from. The
topic may be an uncomfortable subject however there is a lot you can learn from the experiences and
the stories slaves like Harriet Jacobs tell in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. There are several
moments through her life that really challenged and complimented my understanding of slavery in
American history. The incidents that really swayed me where when she found out she was pregnant,
certain the lessons taught by her master, and her trip to Philadelphia. Harriet Jacobs, or Linda Brent,
had a relationship with her master that involved fear and restraint. Dr. Flint, her master, was very
covetous of the young slave girl refusing to sell her to another master. Although she feared him, she
could not escape him and ultimately she let him take advantage of her. This incident in her life stuck
out to me because it showed how slave families seriously disapprove of intercourse with their masters
despite there being no consent. I had always believed that a family would understand that because the
master had forced his will on you, the eyes of god would still see you as pure. The reaction by her
grandmother to initially shun her and say, You have disgraced your dead mother seemed very harsh. In
my opinion this incident is important for people to be aware of for the reason that although you may
feel powerless in a situation, you can never let someone impose their will against

Naturalized Citizen Clause Pros And Cons
Argument Paper: The Naturalization Clause Controversy The United States is a nation built on
independence and freedom. This freedom, established through the constitution, allows American
citizens to be able to participate in their government. The same constitution also restricts freedom of
some Americans however. The naturalization clause amended to the constitution in 1790, forbids
naturalized citizens from becoming president. Many naturalized citizens have lived in America for
most of their lives and contribute to society just as much as a natural born citizen does. The
naturalized clause of 1790 should be removed from the constitution so that naturalized citizens also
have a chance to run for the presidency. To be able to understand the controversy surrounding the
natural born citizen clause in the constitution, it is important to know why it was added to the
constitution in the first place. The original purpose of this clause was to prevent the British rule from
coming to America and taking charge (Hulse). The National Constitution Center staff quoted the
natural born citizen clause in the constitution saying that no person except a natural born citizen or a
citizen of the United States at the time of the adoption of this constitution shall be eligible to the office
of president ( Natural Born ). This clause also allows children that are offspring of United States
citizens that are born internationally to obtain citizenship ( Natural Born ). At the time when the

The Option of Cloud Computing
1. INTRODUCTION With the rapid development of processing and storage technologies and the
success of the Internet, computing resources have become cheaper, more powerful and more
ubiquitously available than ever before. This technological trend has enabled the realization of a new
computing model called cloud computing, in which resources (e.g., CPU and storage) are provided as
general utilities that can be leased and released by users through the Internet in an on demand fashion.
In a cloud computing environment, the traditional role of service provider is divided into two: the
infrastructure providers who manage cloud platforms and lease resources according to a usage based
pricing model, and service providers, who rent resources from one or many infrastructure providers to
serve the end users. The emergence of cloud computing has made a tremendous impact on the
Information Technology (IT) industry over the past few years, where large companies such as Google,
Amazon and Microsoft strive to provide more powerful, reliable and cost efficient cloud platforms,
and business enterprises seek to reshape their business models to gain benefit from this new paradigm.
Indeed, cloud computing provides several compelling features that make it attractive to business
owners, as shown below. No up front investment: Cloud computing uses a pay as you go pricing
model. A service provider does not need to invest in the infrastructure to start gaining benefit from
cloud computing. It simply

Gender Harassment And Sexual Harassment Essay
Bennett Alexander Hartman (2015) mentions that sexual harassment is based on gender and does not
Involve sex, requests for sexual activity, comments, or anything similar (Bennett Alexander Hartman,
2015, p. 423). The non sex requirement is the reason that the term gender in sexual harassment is
discussed meaning whether if the individual is male or female that is filing a sexual harassment claim.
Although, Title VII of the Civil Rights of 1964 mentions that individuals should not be discriminated
on the basis of gender, sex, ethnicity, race, religion, etc it does not specify an individual s sexual
orientation. This writer will be discussing a case where a male employee files a sexual harassment
claim against the employer as the male employee identifies as being gay. He also is filing
discrimination on the basis of his gender and alleges retaliation as he was terminated after he had
complained about his female coworker. Apparently, the male employee alleged that a female employee
while at a dinner and concert after work hours grabbed his privates. It is important to note that the
male employee s performance prior to the incident was declining and was counseled on several
occasions by his employer about his declining production. Furthermore, this writer will be discussing
whether if the facts could result in liability to the employer for sexual harassment or gender
discrimination. Also, this writer will be integrating and referring to various sources and cases that

The Dropped Sales Of Cereal
The dropped sales of cereal. One of the main issues that I have noticed about my idea of making All In
One product is the dropping sales of consumption of cereals. As the data shows the consumption of
cereal has dropped about 5 7 percent these past couple of years (Trafecante, 2016). However, the
reason is not the reducing number of people who eat breakfast, but the increasing number of variety of
breakfast meal in the stores, which makes many people to switch to another type of breakfast food. As
it mentioned in the New York Times article many companies, such as Kellogg, General Mills and Post,
concerned about the reducing trend of sales are trying new innovative ways to stop the downward
trend (Melisa, 2014). Since the half of the cereal consumers are adults they try to make the new
products nostalgic to influence adults choices of breakfast type. Another reason that many cereal
companies believe is the reason of the lowered consumption of cereal is the laziness of people,
because as the article states the 40 percent of teenagers consider eating cereal on breakfast is
inconvenient because they have to clean up afterwards, and they prefer to eat something that will not
take much of their time (Mitchell, 2016). Therefore many consumers switch from eating cereal to
another breakfast not because they don t like it anymore but because it takes longer time to make it
and clean up. Thus, when my All In One product get introduced in the market, we will have a

Coral Reef Essay
Coral reefs are diverse underwater ecosystems that are held together by calcium carbonate structures
secreted by corals. Reefs are built by colonies of different species that are found in marine water.
Reefs are home to a variety of creatures such as fish, urchins, sponges, sharks, turtles, jelly fish, and
thousands of other species and plants. Coral reefs are the most diverse of all marine eco systems and
often called the rainforest of the sea. The total area of the world s coral reefs amount to less then one
quarter of 1% of the entire marine environment. Which is crazy because coral reefs are home to 25%
of all marine life on the planet. Coral reefs have survived tens of thousands of years of natural change,
but major threats from mankind, pollution, and climate change have caused this under water eco
system to have serious threats in the future. Coral reefs are dying around the world. Already human
activity and climate change have destroyed a quarter of the world s coral reefs. The rest of the
remaining coral reefs are in great danger. While these beautiful and colorful underwater habitats

outcomes to marine life. Climate change, pollution, over fishing, and disease outbreaks each play a

of introverted people easier by changing the way of thinking about them. She took a speech at the
February 2012 TED Conference because she want to change the world into more friendly for all the
introverts also because she is one of them.
At the beginning of her speech she shows the audience how could an introverted child feel by telling
her story from her childhood. The story took place at the summer camp where all the children were
forced to be more social and their different needs (for example of introverts) were not taken into
account. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Our world needs a balance between introverts and extraverts. Everyone should have the best
conditions to learn, to work and to improve skills, creativity and productivity. Susan Cain appeals for
giving more freedom of thinking for all the children, for more privacy for all the people, for giving
yourself the time to be only with yourself and for showing what you have inside and what can be
shared with the world. Stop the madness of constant group work, (...) go to the wilderness. Be like

Samuel Beckett s Waiting for Godot Essay
Samuel Beckett s Waiting for Godot
POZZO: Wait! (He doubles up in an attempt to apply his ear to his stomach, listens.
Silence.) I hear nothing. (He beckons them to approach. Vladimir and Estragon go towards him, bend
over his stomach.) Surely one should hear the tick tick.
VLADIMIR: Silence! (All listen, bent double.)
ESTRAGON: I hear something.
POZZO: Where?
VLADIMIR: It s the heart.
POZZO: (disappointed) Damnation!
VLADIMIR: Silence!
ESTRAGON: Perhaps it has stopped. (Beckett 46)

This paper also argues that a close reading of this extract in relation to the rest of the play will prove
that while it is hard to ascertain if there is irony present, because of the possibility of duplicity of
meanings involved in the characters actions, yet the signs of regressive verbal and dramatic ironies,
which constantly undermine one another, ironically appear to ultimately support the argument that a
constructed sense of time passage as linear gives a false sense of security and meaning for our
existence.
The presence of irony in this extract is dependent upon the audience s recognition that the concept of
time passing in a linear fashion helps to construct a false sense of meaning in one s existence, a point
that, reiterated in the entire play, is also insidiously worked into the simple dialogue of this extract.
This concept of time moving in a linear direction is vital to the idea that events do progress from one
point in time to another, which cannot happen if time looped back on itself or passed in an erratic and
unpredictable fashion.
The meaninglessness of activity and, ironically, of any kind of purpose itself, is shown by the multiple
parodies that are packed into this brief extract. The first is the parody of a search for what appears to
be an important and

Benefits Of Children Believing In Santa Claus
The Christmas Debate: Benefits of Children Believing in Santa Claus
Shortly after the trees appear barren after losing all their leaves, most houses and businesses also alter
appearances for the season. Many families drag out boxes of red and green decorations to transform
their homes for the holidays. Parents may brave the line stretching down the mall so their child can tell
Father Christmas, or Santa Claus, what he or she wishes to unwrap on Christmas morning. Some
question the effect on a child s health or morals associated with the belief in Santa Claus, but with
research and psychologists weighing in on the subject state there is no traumatic evidence apparent in
letting a child have faith in Santa Claus. Evidence gathered by these studies may suggest a benefit for
youth. Children should have the opportunity to believe in Santa Claus because it enhances creativity
and can improve mental health, shows young individuals an example of giving without expecting
anything in return, and when the time comes, forces kids to distinguish the difference between fantasy
and reality. Fraser (2015) found that the individual whose story inspired the mythical Santa, also
known as Saint Nicholas, originates from a bishop living in Turkey during the third century. Nikolaos
of Myra refused to worship the then Roman Emperor Diocletian, and was imprisoned until Emperor
Constantine freed the Christians five years later. He went on to show kindness and compassion by
anonymously giving gifts

Coming of Age in Mississippi Essay example
The first main event that I believe led to Anne Moody becoming an activist for Civil Rights was when
she was younger, her cousin George Lee was babysitting and he burned down the house in a fit of rage
and when Daddy gets home he blames it on Essie Mae (Anne Moody). This foreshadows all of life s
injustices that will be thrown her way. The next time was when she made friends with white neighbors
and they decided to go to the movies, Anne couldn t sit with her friends, she had to sit in the balcony
with all of the other blacks. She did not understand why it was this way. Another event was when she
was in high school, she changes her name to Anne Moody, and a white boy, whose name was Emmitt

She showed them that they could be equal. The only difference was the color of the skin. She taught
them that that wasn t even a big difference. She fought segregation her entire life.
The most drastic incident that happened to Anne was when she was working in Canton, Mississippi
for a cause of voter registration. People involved in the movement are dying left and right, and this
becomes very discouraging to her. She finds out that she is on the KKK black list and fears for her
life. She finds out that her family is also afraid and they stop talking to her. She quits her job and
moves back to Canton and goes back to her family. She sees how complacent her family is and this
frustrates her. Her family treated her like a stranger, and when she graduated from Tougaloo, no one
showed up for her graduation. In the end of the book, McKinley is murdered in front of nonviolent
civil rights activists. Anne Moody wonders if things will ever work out.
Growing up in the north, and being white, we were taught in school what the conditions were in the
south and all over America for blacks. I never really thought much of it, like many kids my age,
because it never affected me. I ve been told by teachers, speakers, and whoever else my school would
bring in to tell us about what it was like for blacks back in the 1940 s and the 1950 s. After I read the
book, Coming of Age in Mississippi, I realized what it was really like

Book Report Freak The Mighty
Freak the mighty is a story about two young boys who both have a hard time going through life. Freak
is crippled and short, and Max is tall and retarded. When they become friends, Freak rides on top of
Max s shoulders and together they are freak the mighty whom go on quests together. This book really
shows how you should not judge someone by how they look, which is like the moral of the story. The
character of Freak/kevin is first described as a, crippled kid like humanoid. pg.10 If we were to
describe him just on his appearance we would see him as a scrawny, geeky, crippled kid who has no
friends. Although when we first see him he acts kind when he says to Max his friend, I ll lend you

Examples Of Humor In The Things They Carried
3.0 Trauma and Interaction
Repressed thoughts can re express and influence soldiers conversational interaction. They manifest as
gallows humour, which illustrates the soldiers tendency to adopt inappropriate dark jokes to release
their stress.
In The Things They Carried, the soldiers gallows humour is a manifestation of their repressed fear of
death. This is seen through the character voice of Azar a soldier in the Alpha Company. In The Man I
Killed, the embedded dialogue that interrupts O Brien s main narrative shows Azar comparing the man
O Brien killed to breakfast cereals. Shredded fuckin Wheat , oatmeal or Rice Krispies : the cereal
image illustrates the deformed, porous corpse. Contrast to O Brien s detailed and heartfelt tribute to
the dead soldier, Azar s interruptive and anti climatic allusion to cereals ridicules the body and
dismisses the seriousness of the situation. Likewise, in In The Field, Azar uses inappropriate puns like
Wasted in the waste and biting the dirt to discuss Kiowa s death in the sewage field. His amused tone
is absurd, given the depressing situation of the men who are witnessing their comrades deaths.
However, gallows humour has their origin from the unconscious . Azar s dark humour stems from his
repressed fear of death, which O Brien s collage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Augustus Rise to Power Essay (Tacitus and Augustus)
Question:
Compare the following descriptions of Augustus rise to power, one by Augustus himself and one by
Tacitus (the second century historian), and discuss their historical validity.
1) At the age of nineteen on my own responsibiliy and at my own expense I raised an army,...I
transferred the republic from my power to the dominion of the senate and people of Rome.

2) One view of Augustus went like this: filial duty and national crisis had been merely pretexts...After
that, there had certainly been peace, but it was a bloodstained peace Tacitus, Annals

These two sentences relate directly to Augustus use of the forces he d both raised and had been
granted, to go against the state and force them to elect him as consul (as dramatically shown by
Suetonius).
Another clear point of difference between the two passages is their treatment of the deaths of Gaius
Vibius Panse and Aulus Hirtius, the two consuls who Octavian was sent to fight with in Mutina. While
Augustus relates that both consuls had fallen in battle , Tacitus plants a seed of doubt by saying Soon
both consuls had met their death by enemy action or perhaps in one case by deliberate poisoning of a
wound and in the other at the hand of his own troops, instigated by Octavian . The advantages (as well
as te convenient coincidental nature) of the deaths of both of the consuls for Augustus are clear and
while Augustus (obviously) stands by the belief that they died in battle as historians have also come to
believe due to the lack of evidence of any foul play Tacitus voices the fears of many Roman citizens.
However, in this case, it is Augustus claim which received more historical vailiduty, as lack of
evidence can be evidence in itself; while Tacitus ideas towards the deaths of Pansa and Hirtius were
mere speculation.
Tacitus also shows distrust towards Augustus in his exiling and killing of anyone deemed to be a
political enemy a taste which her masterfully called the proscriptions, and advertised to the public as a

Morphology and Lipid Analysis of 3T3 L1 cells pre and post differentiation
Erin Kim
1
Abstract
This report will look at the morphology of 3T3 L1 cells pre and post differentiation and the percent
lipid in our adipocytes after differentiation. The analysis of cell morphology is important to study cell
behaviour such as the uptake of nutrients [1]. Three different plates of 3T3 L1 cells were examined. 2
of the plates were grown then differentiated into adipocytes. After differentiation, these cells were
fixed with formalin then one was stained with Oil Red O. The last plate was grown to confluency, but
did not undergo differentiation before fixing with formalin. After imaging these cells using a
fluorescence microscope, the images were analyzed with the Image J software. Image J analyzed the
shape index of the cell our results showed the adipocytes to have a shape index of 0.888±0.030 in
comparison to than the undifferentiated fibroblasts, which had a shape index of 0.335±0.082. The
Shape index measures how round or elongated a cell is. The closer the shape index is to 1, the rounder

These 3T3 L1 cells are capable of differentiating from fibroblasts into adipocytes under certain
conditions. 3T3 L1 cells are classified as Biosafety Level 1 [2]. 3T3 L1 cells divide rapidly until they
reach 100 percent confluency, which primes them to differentiate into adipocytes. The purpose of this
study was to examine 3T3 L1 cells before and after differentiation to compare their morphology and
lipid content.
1
Before staining the differentiated cells, they were fixed using formalin (cross linking) to preserve the
cell structure. By staining the cells with Oil Red O, we were able to stain the lipid within the cell,
which increases the contrast of a cell and makes it easier to visualize the lipid content within each cell

Anna Akhmatova Courage
Anna Akhmatova
Courage: Great Russian word, fit for the songs of our children s children, pure on their tongues, and
free (Anna Akhmatova). This line stated by Anna Akhmatova shows that courage was a strong word to
the Russian people during that time. Anna was a famous poet in Russia who wasn t afraid to stand up
for herself and her beliefs. For years she fought for rights under Stalin s rule for the rights of poetry to
be free and unrestricted. Anna Akhmatova s captivating poetry expresses the environmental factors of
St.Petersburg, her involvement in the Acmeism movement and to her bad experience(s) under Stalin s
rule.
St.Petersburg has been an influence to Anna Akhmatova since she sparked an interest in poetry;
starting in her teens. The city was often used as a thematic role in her poetry, and it gave insight on her
home life. Being born into an aristocratic family being a writer was not the ideal career and is why she
had to take a pen name to not shame her family s name. Often she used her beliefs, religious references
and her spiritual beliefs in her poems. Her interest in 19th century prose lead her to follow in the

Anna s poetry was an outcast to what was considered normal in Russian literature during that time.
Due to being pushed into The Union of Soviet Writers in 1934 her and many others were silenced
until Stalin s death. These events led to many themes in her poems often representing a woman who
had to experience struggles similar to what was happening under Stalin s rule. Her family greatly
affected under his rule causing her son to be arrested and her husband being accused of going against
Stalin and being

Personal Statement On Massage Green Spa
Three days before I voluntarily resigned my position from Massage Green Spa, there was an incident
that took place, which resulted in my lack of trust from the organization. When I was working for
Massage Green Spa, I usually was one of the therapists that close on Sunday nights. Forty five
minutes prior to closing, I did not have a massage scheduled, so I decided to clean the bathrooms in
preparation for closing. Halfway through the cleaning, I was interrupted by the receptionist to notify
me that we had a last minute walk inn. I expressed my frustration that the client will only have time
for twenty five minutes and I am not prepared to massage someone after just handling cleaning
chemicals. I stopped what I was doing and went up front to explain to the client that I cannot do a full
body massage in twenty five minutes. The male client express that he did not care and that he would
leave a nasty yelp review. I took the client back to the massage room and told him to lay face down
under the sheets. When I entered the room to start the massage, the man was laying naked face up on
top of the sheets. As I was getting him covered with a blanket, I stressed to him that he needs to
remain covered and draped. Once I started the session, he made an attempt to grab and touch me
inappropriately. I told him that the session is now over; this behavior is not okay at this establishment.
I left the room and stormed upfront to tell the receptionist what had just happened. I immediately

Cochlear Implant Surgery Research Paper
More than 28 million Americans are deaf or hearing impaired. This statistic may reach 40 million by
the year 2020 ( Cochlear Implant Surgery , n.d.). Individuals who are deaf face many challenges and

  • 2. The Field Of American Studies In this essay, I will examine the field of American Studies and attempt to explain its ever changing definition. I will take the reader through the origins of American Studies and describe the events that led to changes in the discipline. The scholars in American Studies are constantly seeking to understand the practices by individuals and groups and their history of origin. Scholars struggle to understand how values and beliefs shape social and political realities within the U.S. and other countries. American Studies is an interdisciplinary study that explores cultures of the United States as well as their transnational exchanges and impact. In the words of Staurt Hall, he finds in American culture and in America s capacity to live with difference the best illustration of a continuous dialect between the local and the global, between the insular and the transnational. He defines culture as an embodiment of the best that has been thought and said in a society. It is the sum of the great ideas as represented in the classic works of painting, music, and philosophy that represent culture. (Hall, 9) Hall also has observed U.S. dominance in communication and described America as the common factor of globalization. The field of American Studies began in what may be called a single beginning with multiple origins. The beginning of the American Studies Association in late 1951 and early 1952 and the beginning of the journal, American Quarterly at the University of Minnesota in ... Essay on Drugs and Bronchospasms Drugs and Bronchospasms Bronchospasms induced by drugs can be managed beneficially through knowledge of causative agents and knowledge on treatment of the disease. Bronchospasms are an excessive and prolonged contraction of the smooth muscle of the bronchi and bronchioles, resulting in an acute narrowing and obstruction of the respiratory airway. The contractions may be localized or general and may be caused by irritation or injury to the respiratory mucosa, infections, or allergies or drugs. A cough with generalized wheezing usually indicates the condition. Bronchospasm is a chief characteristic of asthma 2 and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD). The news was on in every house, reporters saying Convicted of robbery, Emily Stanford seen running down the streets of New York. The last we saw her was she was heading down to the bus stations. If anyone has any information on where she is going please call the police station. Emily ran towards the train station desperate to get there before the police caught up to her. She walked up to the line and waited impatiently. Every sound made her on edge, when it was finally her turn she pulled her hood closer to her face. One ticket for Cold Spring please. Emily said quickly, the lady in the ticket booth gave her her ticket and directed her to the bus platform. Emily quickly and quietly walked over to the bus and took her seat. A few hours later the bus stopped and announced its destination, Emily got off the bus and walked quickly down the street looking for any opportunity to get somewhere to sleep without getting noticed. She walked past a TV shop and in the window the TV was playing. The same news playing from earlier that day, she wished every thing would just disappear and leave her alone for at least one day. She eventually found a small quiet motel, she got a nice room. After she got settled into the room she got the things she needed out of her backpack. She walked into the bathroom and got her hair damp and applied the hair dye. While waiting for her hair to dry she did her makeup, she covered up her freckles. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Gardner Versus Traditional Teaching Methods Rhetorical... Gardner vs Traditional Teaching Methods Mr. Gardner expresses the theory that students should first learn how to understand a few important subjects and be able to decipher unique situations rather than just memorize facts for standardized tests. He builds his argument eloquently using mainly logos and ethos as his persuasive methods. He uses logos by making the reader think logically and digest not only his opinion, but the opinion of other experts. As for ethos, Mr. Gardner impresses upon the reader that he has a wealth of knowledge and an extensive background in the subject of education. Professor Gardner presents logos by quoting psychologists and educators, usage of historical analysis, and real world examples. This forces the reader to think about their own experiences and how they were taught and what teaching style would be best for their own children or themselves. He believes that students should learn to appreciate multiple perspectives about a subject and rid themselves of their simplistic misconceptions (Gardner 634). However, wiping the mental slate clean he says, is not a simple task and he furthers his point using logos in paraphrasing Lauren Resnick , disconfirming experiences do not always suffice to dissolve faulty conceptions and ... • 7. Jainism Is An Environmentally Responsible Way Of Life Mahavira said, All of life is just like me. I want to live. So do all souls, all living beings. The instinct of self preservation is universal. Every animate being clings to life and fears death. Each of us wants to be free from pain. So let me carry out all of my activities with great care not to be harmful to any living being (as cited in Rosenfield Segall). Jainism is an ecologically responsible way of life, which is non violent in thoughts, actions, and deeds (Pecorino, 2001). The heart of Jainism is to live and practice ahimsa. This is the action by which all actions are judged (ahimsa| Britannica.com, 2015). The Golden Rule, if you will. The Jain s believe that life is eternal. That all living souls have the potential of attaining enlightenment and immortality (Raghuram, 2004). If you interrupt the spiritual progress or jiva of an insect, animal, plant or person, you will incur karma (ahimsa | Britannica.com, 2015). Your karma will affect your samsara, and will determine your next incarnation. The purpose in one s life is to attain liberation from the samsara cycle. Why are we drawn to the many different facets of violence that we experience in our lives? Is violence a learned behavior or has it become a part of our evolutionary progression. As hunters and gatherers, we used violence for survival. Now, it seems that humans react with violence to resolve multiple types of conflict. Is it just primal instinct? Does our subconscious fight or flight control the way ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Enchanted Bluff Essay example The Enchanted Bluff The Enchanted Bluff , by Willa Cather, takes place in the bare cornfields of Nebraska during the early 1900 s where only rivers liven up the landscape. Six boys delve into the idea of a city on top of a bluff in the desert, they become captivated with the idea of visiting the bluff. The boys eagerly discuss ways of dominating this mystifying bluff: throwing up a ladder, or using a rocket. All the boys vow to get to the bluff some day. Twenty years pass and none visit it. One of the young boys tells the story to his son and his son thinks of nothing else but the bluff. The reader gets a sense of how the boys lived when Cather mentions how, Tip worked hard in his father s grocery store every afternoon, and swept it out before school in the morning, even his recreations were laborious (Cather 413). When reading Cather s works, there is a feeling that she taught the best of all philosophies, that of love, hard work, and courage (Wells) . Through the tone of this story, the reader easily senses that this old fashioned town run with hard work and honesty is careless. The author does an excellent job of describing individuals in the town such as, Percy Pound who took half a dozen boys story papers and was always kept in reading detective stories behind the desk (Cather 413). Cather s writing style shows an unhampered zest for enjoyment (Wells). The reader gets the feeling that the character Percy Pound is a young laid back inquisitive boy who likes adventures. Willa Cather not only uses local color to show descriptions of the characters in the story but also in conveying the setting. Willa Cather provides vivid imagery throughout the story to set the relaxed tone. The reader imagines a very descriptive portrait of the boys hometown when the story mentions how the oblique rays of the light made a dazzling glare on the white sand about us (Cather 411). • 9. Psycho Dynamic Concepts And Therapies Throughout the years and despite the endless scientific research, many have come to believe that psycho dynamic concepts and therapies are not as effective as other therapies. However, Shedler (2010) believes that the misconception of the ineffectiveness of psycho dynamic concepts and therapies are mainly because of the distaste that exists in the mental health professions due to the hierarchical medical establishment that used to deny training to non MDs and adopted a dismissive stance towards research (Shedler, pg. 98, 2010). As a result, research was disregarded and the spot light was placed on the emerging new therapies that were widely welcomed by the academicians whilst the psycho dynamic therapies received very limited attention. ... The skill related components of fitness (speed, power, agility, balance, reaction time, and coordination) are primarily important in achieving success in athletics and are not as crucial for the development of better health. Soccer players need a combination of aerobic and anaerobic fitness due to the nature of the game and the fact that there is continuous movement with lots of short bursts of more intense activity. Some positions require higher levels of anaerobic fitness than others, some require more aerobic fitness. A midfield player is required to cover a lot of ground during a game and needs a good aerobic engine. • 11. The Stop-Question and Frisk Program The black or white, either or and this or that misconceptions that are common in conversations with children seems to be arising over the Stop and Frisk Law in New York City. It has long been an issue of debate over whether it is a form of practicing racial profiling since its implementation. Arguments between advocates and critics of the law appear to be so incompatible that people are simply taking sides rather than trying to push the discussion forward. Frankly, supporters and protestors of the practice have established their opinions with incomplete information and lack of adequate critical reasoning. While those in favor have failed to admit to the apparent existence of racial profiling, those who are against the law only focus on racial profiling and do not participate in the broader discussion of whether or not it actually brings safety to the city. The conversation might be able to move forward if both sides were to emphasize on the most crucial issue of whether safety trumps civil rights. The Stop Question and Frisk Program, more commonly known as stop and frisk or 250s, authorizes police to stop and question pedestrians and frisk them for weapons or other contrabands. This practice is based on the decision of the United States Supreme Court form the case of Terry v. Ohio. The holding establishes that if there is reasonable suspicion that the person may be dangerous or armed, police can stop him or her without violating the Fourth Amendment, which prohibits ... Why are humans so dominant and powerful on Earth? Is it because they have the ability accept their vices and grow as a whole? In Pensées, Blaise Pascal, the famous child prodigy from France, connected to this idea when he wrote Man s greatness comes from knowing he is wretched: a tree does not know it is wretched. None other than Bill James, a widely known baseball writer, noted that the perceived strategy is actually very trite, predictable, and actually nonstrategic. Instead of manager s deciding on what substitution, or lack thereof, can give their team an advantage, they are forced with situations in which they must bunt, must pinch hit, and must double switch. As James notes, the American League game allows a true option, and thus true strategy. This means that whatever AL managers decide to do when it comes to offensive batting substitutions, they do so to benefit their team, not because they are forced to do so (Meehan, 2013). These substitutions, including the commonly used double switch where a pinch hitter is substituted for the pitcher and the next inning is substituted again for a relief pitcher, take up time in the game. It is significantly a problem in the MLB where the longevity and the slow pace of the game has caused many fans to get bored sitting through a full nine innings. Especially with the addition of instant replay, the game continues to get longer and it has become a challenge for many fans to watch an entire game. Brian Costa, sports reporter for the Wall Street Journal, wrote an article about the reasons for the length and slow pace of the game. He mentions that it has become normal for fans to complain about hitters stepping out of the batter s box, pitchers pacing around the mound and pitching changes. A workaholic must be able to see that the real root of all their problems is due to their unwavering need to constantly choose work over family and leisure time. Once a workaholic recognizes and pinpoints the problem the next step would be for them to accept that they have a problem. At this point it is likely that the workaholics close friends, family and any others that may be affected come together to express their concerns and provide support to the workaholic through a process called group intervention (Dungan 42). Dr. Flint, her master, was very covetous of the young slave girl refusing to sell her to another master. Although she feared him, she could not escape him and ultimately she let him take advantage of her. This incident in her life stuck out to me because it showed how slave families seriously disapprove of intercourse with their masters despite there being no consent. I had always believed that a family would understand that because the master had forced his will on you, the eyes of god would still see you as pure. • 35. Naturalized Citizen Clause Pros And Cons Argument Paper: The Naturalization Clause Controversy The United States is a nation built on independence and freedom. This freedom, established through the constitution, allows American citizens to be able to participate in their government. The same constitution also restricts freedom of some Americans however. The naturalization clause amended to the constitution in 1790, forbids naturalized citizens from becoming president. Many naturalized citizens have lived in America for most of their lives and contribute to society just as much as a natural born citizen does. The naturalized clause of 1790 should be removed from the constitution so that naturalized citizens also have a chance to run for the presidency. To be able to understand the controversy surrounding the natural born citizen clause in the constitution, it is important to know why it was added to the constitution in the first place. The original purpose of this clause was to prevent the British rule from coming to America and taking charge (Hulse). The National Constitution Center staff quoted the natural born citizen clause in the constitution saying that no person except a natural born citizen or a citizen of the United States at the time of the adoption of this constitution shall be eligible to the office of president ( Natural Born ). This clause also allows children that are offspring of United States citizens that are born internationally to obtain citizenship ( Natural Born ). At the time when the ... • 36. The Option of Cloud Computing 1. INTRODUCTION With the rapid development of processing and storage technologies and the success of the Internet, computing resources have become cheaper, more powerful and more ubiquitously available than ever before. This technological trend has enabled the realization of a new computing model called cloud computing, in which resources (e.g., CPU and storage) are provided as general utilities that can be leased and released by users through the Internet in an on demand fashion. In a cloud computing environment, the traditional role of service provider is divided into two: the infrastructure providers who manage cloud platforms and lease resources according to a usage based pricing model, and service providers, who rent resources from one or many infrastructure providers to serve the end users. The emergence of cloud computing has made a tremendous impact on the Information Technology (IT) industry over the past few years, where large companies such as Google, Amazon and Microsoft strive to provide more powerful, reliable and cost efficient cloud platforms, and business enterprises seek to reshape their business models to gain benefit from this new paradigm. Indeed, cloud computing provides several compelling features that make it attractive to business owners, as shown below. No up front investment: Cloud computing uses a pay as you go pricing model. A service provider does not need to invest in the infrastructure to start gaining benefit from cloud computing. It simply ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Gender Harassment And Sexual Harassment Essay Bennett Alexander Hartman (2015) mentions that sexual harassment is based on gender and does not Involve sex, requests for sexual activity, comments, or anything similar (Bennett Alexander Hartman, 2015, p. 423). The non sex requirement is the reason that the term gender in sexual harassment is discussed meaning whether if the individual is male or female that is filing a sexual harassment claim. Although, Title VII of the Civil Rights of 1964 mentions that individuals should not be discriminated on the basis of gender, sex, ethnicity, race, religion, etc it does not specify an individual s sexual orientation. This writer will be discussing a case where a male employee files a sexual harassment claim against the employer as the male employee identifies as being gay. He also is filing discrimination on the basis of his gender and alleges retaliation as he was terminated after he had complained about his female coworker. Apparently, the male employee alleged that a female employee while at a dinner and concert after work hours grabbed his privates. It is important to note that the male employee s performance prior to the incident was declining and was counseled on several occasions by his employer about his declining production. Furthermore, this writer will be discussing whether if the facts could result in liability to the employer for sexual harassment or gender discrimination. • 38. The Dropped Sales Of Cereal The dropped sales of cereal. One of the main issues that I have noticed about my idea of making All In One product is the dropping sales of consumption of cereals. As the data shows the consumption of cereal has dropped about 5 7 percent these past couple of years (Trafecante, 2016). However, the reason is not the reducing number of people who eat breakfast, but the increasing number of variety of breakfast meal in the stores, which makes many people to switch to another type of breakfast food. As it mentioned in the New York Times article many companies, such as Kellogg, General Mills and Post, concerned about the reducing trend of sales are trying new innovative ways to stop the downward trend (Melisa, 2014). Since the half of the cereal consumers are adults they try to make the new products nostalgic to influence adults choices of breakfast type. Another reason that many cereal companies believe is the reason of the lowered consumption of cereal is the laziness of people, because as the article states the 40 percent of teenagers consider eating cereal on breakfast is inconvenient because they have to clean up afterwards, and they prefer to eat something that will not take much of their time (Mitchell, 2016). Therefore many consumers switch from eating cereal to another breakfast not because they don t like it anymore but because it takes longer time to make it and clean up. Thus, when my All In One product get introduced in the market, we will have a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Coral Reef Essay Coral reefs are diverse underwater ecosystems that are held together by calcium carbonate structures secreted by corals. Reefs are built by colonies of different species that are found in marine water. Reefs are home to a variety of creatures such as fish, urchins, sponges, sharks, turtles, jelly fish, and thousands of other species and plants. Coral reefs are the most diverse of all marine eco systems and often called the rainforest of the sea. The total area of the world s coral reefs amount to less then one quarter of 1% of the entire marine environment. Which is crazy because coral reefs are home to 25% of all marine life on the planet. Coral reefs have survived tens of thousands of years of natural change, but major threats from mankind, pollution, and climate change have caused this under water eco system to have serious threats in the future. Coral reefs are dying around the world. Already human activity and climate change have destroyed a quarter of the world s coral reefs. The rest of the remaining coral reefs are in great danger. While these beautiful and colorful underwater habitats flourish all around the world, there are many factors that can affect coral reefs and cause devastating outcomes to marine life. Climate change, pollution, over fishing, and disease outbreaks each play a significant role to negative and damaging effects of coral reefs. This paper also argues that a close reading of this extract in relation to the rest of the play will prove that while it is hard to ascertain if there is irony present, because of the possibility of duplicity of meanings involved in the characters actions, yet the signs of regressive verbal and dramatic ironies, which constantly undermine one another, ironically appear to ultimately support the argument that a constructed sense of time passage as linear gives a false sense of security and meaning for our existence. The presence of irony in this extract is dependent upon the audience s recognition that the concept of time passing in a linear fashion helps to construct a false sense of meaning in one s existence, a point that, reiterated in the entire play, is also insidiously worked into the simple dialogue of this extract. This concept of time moving in a linear direction is vital to the idea that events do progress from one point in time to another, which cannot happen if time looped back on itself or passed in an erratic and unpredictable fashion. Benefits Of Children Believing In Santa Claus The Christmas Debate: Benefits of Children Believing in Santa Claus Shortly after the trees appear barren after losing all their leaves, most houses and businesses also alter appearances for the season. Many families drag out boxes of red and green decorations to transform their homes for the holidays. Parents may brave the line stretching down the mall so their child can tell Father Christmas, or Santa Claus, what he or she wishes to unwrap on Christmas morning. Some question the effect on a child s health or morals associated with the belief in Santa Claus, but with research and psychologists weighing in on the subject state there is no traumatic evidence apparent in letting a child have faith in Santa Claus. Evidence gathered by these studies may suggest a benefit for youth. Children should have the opportunity to believe in Santa Claus because it enhances creativity and can improve mental health, shows young individuals an example of giving without expecting anything in return, and when the time comes, forces kids to distinguish the difference between fantasy and reality. Fraser (2015) found that the individual whose story inspired the mythical Santa, also known as Saint Nicholas, originates from a bishop living in Turkey during the third century. Nikolaos of Myra refused to worship the then Roman Emperor Diocletian, and was imprisoned until Emperor Constantine freed the Christians five years later. This foreshadows all of life s injustices that will be thrown her way. The next time was when she made friends with white neighbors and they decided to go to the movies, Anne couldn t sit with her friends, she had to sit in the balcony with all of the other blacks. People involved in the movement are dying left and right, and this becomes very discouraging to her. She finds out that she is on the KKK black list and fears for her life. She finds out that her family is also afraid and they stop talking to her. She quits her job and moves back to Canton and goes back to her family. They manifest as gallows humour, which illustrates the soldiers tendency to adopt inappropriate dark jokes to release their stress. In The Things They Carried, the soldiers gallows humour is a manifestation of their repressed fear of death. This is seen through the character voice of Azar a soldier in the Alpha Company. In The Man I Killed, the embedded dialogue that interrupts O Brien s main narrative shows Azar comparing the man O Brien killed to breakfast cereals. Shredded fuckin Wheat , oatmeal or Rice Krispies : the cereal image illustrates the deformed, porous corpse. Contrast to O Brien s detailed and heartfelt tribute to the dead soldier, Azar s interruptive and anti climatic allusion to cereals ridicules the body and dismisses the seriousness of the situation. Likewise, in In The Field, Azar uses inappropriate puns like Wasted in the waste and biting the dirt to discuss Kiowa s death in the sewage field. These two sentences relate directly to Augustus use of the forces he d both raised and had been granted, to go against the state and force them to elect him as consul (as dramatically shown by Suetonius). Another clear point of difference between the two passages is their treatment of the deaths of Gaius Vibius Panse and Aulus Hirtius, the two consuls who Octavian was sent to fight with in Mutina. While Augustus relates that both consuls had fallen in battle , Tacitus plants a seed of doubt by saying Soon both consuls had met their death by enemy action or perhaps in one case by deliberate poisoning of a wound and in the other at the hand of his own troops, instigated by Octavian . The advantages (as well as te convenient coincidental nature) of the deaths of both of the consuls for Augustus are clear and while Augustus (obviously) stands by the belief that they died in battle as historians have also come to believe due to the lack of evidence of any foul play Tacitus voices the fears of many Roman citizens. However, in this case, it is Augustus claim which received more historical vailiduty, as lack of evidence can be evidence in itself; while Tacitus ideas towards the deaths of Pansa and Hirtius were mere speculation. The analysis of cell morphology is important to study cell behaviour such as the uptake of nutrients [1]. Three different plates of 3T3 L1 cells were examined. 2 of the plates were grown then differentiated into adipocytes. After differentiation, these cells were fixed with formalin then one was stained with Oil Red O. The last plate was grown to confluency, but did not undergo differentiation before fixing with formalin. After imaging these cells using a fluorescence microscope, the images were analyzed with the Image J software. Image J analyzed the shape index of the cell our results showed the adipocytes to have a shape index of 0.888±0.030 in comparison to than the undifferentiated fibroblasts, which had a shape index of 0.335±0.082.
