2. Morragh Mine
Morragh Mine 1. Identify the hazards in the case, which can be environmental, situational, human or
ergonomic. Environmental Hazards Mining is a dangerous occupation, and many of these dangers are
associated with the environment in which the miners worked. One environmental hazard evident in
this case was the dangers the miners encountered while working underground. While working in this
type of situation there are always threats of cave ins and because the environment is underground there
would be a lack of natural light. Situational Hazards Situational hazards are known as unsafe
conditions which exist when proper measures are not taken by company officials, for example,
management not providing proper safe equipment. There are many ... Show more content on

Management was not allowing adequate time for maintenance work. It was reported that two months
before the explosion a maintenance worker could not complete repair work on mining equipment
because it was needed for work underground. Because management allowed broken equipment to be
involved in dangerous mining operations this would be a human hazard. Maintenance workers were
also required to modify machinery in order to conform to safety regulations. This is a human hazard
because workers are required to work with machinery that could possibly be dangerous and employees
maybe using the machinery improperly. Management did not encourage the development of an
occupational health and safety committee. The company never encouraged the committee to meet and
discuss safety concerns and management was not involved with the committee. There were also
problems with mining inspections, government investigations into this problem produced
irregularities. Many orders issued by mining inspectors were not carried out. Management and mining
inspectors not ensuring that safety standards were followed is a human hazard. 2. How does the case
illustrate the statement, poor occupational health and safety is a high cost item? Distinguish between
direct and indirect costs in your answer. This explosion is a prime example of what could happen if
employers do not follow

The Iranian hostage crisis occurred on November 4, 1979. This crisis was a diplomatic standoff
between the United States and Iran, which lasted 444 days. A group of Iranian students from the
Muslim Student Followers of the Imam s Line took over the United States embassy in the capital city
of Tehran. This crisis is known as the longest hostage situation in recorded history. A total of 52
diplomats and citizens were held hostages within the U.S embassy. In Iran, this crisis was widely
viewed as an attack against the United States and its influence within Iranian borders. During this
crisis, the United States also granted asylum to Mohammad Reza Pahlavi after he was overthrown in

4. How Did Shakespeare Influence Today
Over four hundred years ago, William Shakespeare wrote his first play. Today, many of his plots and
characters are alive and well. His writings include 16 comedies, 10 histories, 12 tragedies, 154
sonnets, and five longer poems. In all of these, he taught us that love can conquer and destroy, that
people trust in what they can t see, and that human beliefs can be easily influenced. These writings
have taught us many lessons that still influence much of today s culture. His stories have played a
major role in the entertainment industry and still today we see his influence in theatre, film, and music
industries (Tumiel). Some people say that theatre has never been the same since Shakespeare s first
performances. Many historians say ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

5. The Epidemic Of Obesity And The United States

The Epidemic of Obesity In the beginning, it was just a few grains of sand. Now, those grains have
seemed to triple in amount. The 1960 s were great, as many might recall. New rock bands from other
countries were jamming out making number one hits on the billboards. Times were actually changing
in more than just that one way though. Hiding behind the curtains, an epidemic, was about to break
out. Unlike many epidemics, this one only pertained to the United States. The United States of
America is very unique in many ways compared to most other countries of the world. Ranging from
activities and the way they live, to the way its government is ran and how different the means of

It was designed for quick service, yet having great food to eat. That right there, will come back years
later to haunt Americans. With a small menu of only 9 items, there was one food item that stuck out
like a sore thumb when it came to the sales charts. That item would be the delicious fifteen cent
hamburger. By 1958, McDonalds sold 100 million hamburgers. Over the years, they opened many
more restaurants. Not only were they selling, they were expanding. Business was booming, so they
had no choice rather than to expand their services. In the very next year, they had opened their 100th
McDonalds restaurant. All this was in just four years, if time could tell how quickly things change, lets
skip ahead another three years. The year 1962 truly marked an era of how Americans are today. Lazy
and arrogant! A Denver, Colorado McDonalds introduced indoor seating for their McDonalds
restaurant. This seems like everyday dining for most of everybody reading this. With just one food
chain opening up, surely it could not be the only cause of obesity rates in the United States. Please
remember, McDonalds is not the only fast food chain around. They inspired others along with their
success. Burger King, Checkers, Hardees, Wendys and Sub Way are just a few example of fast food
chains that have began to dominate the food industry. Americans live in a wonderland of food, and
they take advantage of it! With many varieties of fast food chains

6. Themes Of All Quiet On The Western Front
All Quiet On The Western Front written by Erich Maria Remarque is a wonderful tale that expresses
the theme of comradeship, dehumanizing effects of war, and the futility of war. All 296 pages are full
of twists and turns, lessons to learn, and all the brutality of war. This anti war book opens your eyes to
situations you ve never thought about. It shines a new light on battle that has never been documented
before. All Quiet on the Western Front is a coming of age book that teaches you many valuable things.
Remarque s All Quiet On The Western Front had many great lessons, one of the greatest ones was the
theme of comradeship. During his time on the front, Paul and his buddies formed a bond with each
other that could not be broken. This is clear when Paul states that they are the strongest, most
comforting thing there is anywhere: they are the voices of my comrades. (Remarque 212) In this line,
Paul expresses his compassion and respect, he has for his comrades. Paul s thought process
encourages the idea that his friends help him get through each day, That during his hardest times, his
friends voices help him push through it. When Paul was going through an internal battle, his comrades
talked to him and helped him work it out. For example, when Paul finally lets his frustrations out to
his friends he listens to them and feels comforted, reassured by their presence. (Remarque, 228) The
theme of comradeship is being able to forge connections with other soldiers.

7. Essay on The Physics of Bridges
The Physics of Bridges
The design of the bridge superstructure is based on a set of loading conditions which the component or
element must withstand. A bridge engineer must take into account a wide variety of loads which may
vary based on the duration of the load
(permanent or temporary), the direction of the load (vertical, longitudinal, etc.), and the effect of the
load (shear, bending, torsion, etc.).
In order to form a consistent basis for design, organizations like AASHTO, American
Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, have developed a set of standard loading
conditions which are applied to the engineer s design model of the structure. Other nations maintain
their own set of design loads like the BS ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the table 1.1 the designer would separate items such as sidewalks, railings, parapets, signing,
utilities, and the wearing of the surface.
Pressures due to earth and water are also considered permanent loads. While these loads primarily
affect substructure elements, they have the potential of impacting superstructure elements as well at
points where these two components interface (e.g., at the abutment backwall). This gives us a good
reminder that while we are discussing the structure s individual components, we can not lose sight of
the structure as a whole.
Temporary loads are those loads, which are placed on a bridge for only a short period of time. Just as
dead loads are the permanent loading condition, live loads represent the major temporary loading
condition. There are, however, several other classes of temporary loads, which the designer must
consider. The temporary loads are: vehicle live load, earthquake live load, wind loading, channel
forces, centrifugal forces, impact forces, and erection loads.
The term live load means a load that moves along the length of a span. Therefore, a person walking
along the bridge can be considered live load. Obviously, a highway bridge

8. The Theme Of Tess Of The DUrbervilles
Tess of the d Urbervilles written by Thomas Hardy takes place in the 19th century in high class
England. One fellow by the name of Jack Durbeyfield learned from a local parson that he is actually
descended from the old and forgotten family, the D Urbervilles. Planning to exact his royal name, he
sent his eldest daughter to a nearby town by the name of D Urberville, to see if she can find out
whether or not they are related. Tess came to find out that their name had died off and is no longer
related to the noble name, D Urberville. What Jack and his family do with that information will be
uncovered soon. Birds, one of the most recurring themes throughout this novel. The characters believe
that birds represent higher beings, as if they are spirits from another realm. The main birds that the
characters speak of, mainly Tess, is the Christian dove of peace and the Romantic songbirds of Keats
and Shelley. The author makes you think as if the birds speak for Tess. On many occasions you can
hear birds singing in the background as Tess sits quietly and silent. Her personality and mannerisms
make her seem quiet and calm. The real reason for this is because she was raped by Alec D Urberville,
son of the noble family, when she was younger and feels wronged and disgraced. The incident makes
her silent and submissive to whatever the situation is. The birds also represent more than just Tess s
voice; they also represent images of hope and freedom. One occurrence of this was when Tess

9. Essay on MP3 and Music
The Possibilities and Problems of Digital Recording and Distribution
Abstract: This essay deals with the creative possibilities generated by the influx of inexpensive and
easy to use digital recording software, hardware, and digital distribution techniques. One of the main
themes of the essay is the problem of upholding creativity and artistic integrity in an unmediated
digital environment.
What would you say if I told you that I had bought entire paragraphs of this paper online? You would
probably accuse me of plagiarism and disregard the contents of the essay. However, many
contemporary composers and their listeners consider the practice of buying digital loops of music for
use in compositions completely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, modern technology has made it possible to package many of the features of large recording
studios into small digital recording consoles, which amateur musicians can afford. The price of one of
these consoles, the Tascam Digital Portastudio 788, at Musiciansfriend.com, is $899.99 [1]. This
console, although seemingly expensive, is much more cost effective than paying for an entire studio,
and can achieve nearly the same results. The real benefit of a digital recording console, however, is the
creative control it bestows upon musicians. Instead of having a producer who dictates how the
recording should sound, the musician becomes the producer, giving him complete control over all
aspects of the composition. Additionally, because of the cost of studio recording, a musician s time in
the studio is usually limited. However, with a personal digital recording console, one can freely
experiment with new ideas without time constraints. While this unmediated recording environment
theoretically provides an artist with unlimited creative flexibility, it also allows for detrimental misuse
in the form of non original composition, which can negate the creative possibilities of this new artistic
process.
The accessibility and simplicity of the unmediated digital recording process enable individuals, who
otherwise would not be involved in music recording, damage the reputation

10. Temporary Tattoos In The Middle East
Tattoos in the Middle East Historically tattoos have played an important role in Middle Eastern
culture. Tattoos have been especially significant in tribal communities. While traditional techniques
have lost popularity in the Islamic countries, skin decorating has remained prominent. The once
popular practice of permanent tattooing has shifted, in many places in the Middle East, to the practice
of temporary tattooing. There is a diverse range of meaning behind tattooing in theses countries. The
tattoos were used for protection, decoration and displaying sexuality. Interestingly, it appears as if
there have not been many formal studies about the meanings and origins of tattoos in the Middle
Eastern culture. However, I was still able to find ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Among Bedouin women the tattoos symbolize beauty, sex, and protection. It was once thought that
tattoos protected people from evil spirits. The facial tattoos serve mostly to decorate and beautify
women. Tattoos in scandalous places such as the upper thigh are meant to be seen only by sexual
partners thereby having an erotic function (DeMello 51). Another source states that the Berber women
tattooed because of their belief in supernatural energies and used tattoos to protect against the dark
energies. These tattoos are placed near places on the body deemed to be vulnerable to evil; they were
placed around the eyes, mouth, nose, belly button, and vagina. The tattoos are intended to protect
against illnesses and spirts; for example, tattoos placed on the feet defend against possession from evil
spirits (Krutak). For Algerian women tattoos signified healing and fertility, along with beauty, and
female identity (Bendaas). Tattoos may have also been used to identify oneself as belonging to a
certain tribe, displaying bravery and celebrating big life events. This source also claimed that women
used tattoos to make themselves beautiful to the men in their tribe while deterring attention from men
of other tribes. The author noted that Iranian men used tattoos to demonstrate strength and
masculinity, but reports of this phenomenon were rare in my research (Laura). In fact, a different

I have had a bad shopping experience at Neiman Marcus in Scottsdale, Arizona. I went specifically to

12. Monk s Character And Personality
The flaws in the character, Adrian Monk, are probably for the plot of the show. Monk s unique
character and personality are due to his OCD. As mentioned in the earlier, the detective developed his
obsessive compulsive disorder after the murder of his wife Judy in a car bomb. The death traumatized
the renowned detective and led to him trying to solve the murder mystery throughout the series. Monk
s OCD case would be considered an acquired type (Pitman). There has been a similar case to Monk. In
a study by Pitman, a 59 year old woman developed OCD and phobias after seeing the charred body of
her daughter. The two cases of OCD have both been acquired after the two patients were traumatized
by the death of their loved ones. Similar to OCD, a traumatic event may trigger the development of a
phobia (mayoclinic2). In the series, Adrian Monk is revealed to have an older brother named Ambrose
Monk. As stated in Mr. Monk and the Three Pies, Ambrose spent 32 years in his home without ever
leaving it due to his agoraphobia or fear of open places. In a slideshow produced by WebMD, there is
a statement stating immediate family members of people with phobias are three times more likely to
develop a phobia than those without a family history, therefore it is not a coincidence that Adrian and
Ambrose have both developed phobias. Researchers at the Emory University School of Medicine have
discovered that mice can pass on learned information about traumatic or stressful experiences. This

14. What Is Rawls Definition Of Justice
Rawls definition of justice differs from Aristotle s definition. According to Aristotle, justice is viewed
as the condition when a person follows the law and is fair. Justice often times deals with money and
honor. Specifically, he defines two types of justice distributive and reciprocity. Distributive justice
means that the amount of wealth a person has is directly related to the person s merit. While,
reciprocity justice means that if there is disproportional ratio of gains and deficits, there will be a
balance to even out the disproportional aspect of this kind of justice. For example, if a man is cheated
by another man and loses money, he can go to court to fight his case and there will be a judge who
decides. While, Rawls definition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Previously, silent comedy films would poke fun at the lower class and because of the nature of not
having any sound; it depicted the lower class as barbaric and country bumpkin. However, with sound,
the films were able to depict the realistic differences caused by class because it was no longer just
funny movements. There was substance. Trading Places also depicted the class status of the different
characters. When the film first introduced Valentine, he was physically shorter than the rest of the
actors, (because he pretended to have no legs to gain sympathy for money), to depict that he is from a
lower class. His clothes were also not as crisp as the wealthy people s. He was not in a suit and tie.
When Valentine was led into his new home, he kept putting things in his pocket because he did not
believe that the home was his. When we see the Duke Brothers being introduced, they are sitting a
room filled of fancy books and furniture. They also spoke in an exaggerated snobbish tone to depict
their wealth off backgrounds. Another thing is that when they panned into the club that the men were
in, it was mostly filled with other white men from other Ivy leagues. The help who bought them the
tea was a person of color. The film depicted the different class statuses in the very introduction of the
movie. Although, it may have appeared exaggerated with the snobbish tone of voice, the truth is that

15. Evaluation Of The Wheaton Sanitary District
The Wheaton Sanitary District is already using a state of the art monitoring system to track status and
record the measurement of the key plant operational equipment. The Supervisory Control and Data
Access (SCADA) system interfaced with the plant equipment provides, the operation team, a real time
data on the key components of the plant s equipment. SCADA allows operational team to open, close
or adjust equipment parameters to archive maximum efficiency to meet the peak demand. According
to Russell and Taylor (2014), the size and complexity of the problem makes the decision making often
difficult. Further, the flow is controlled by a bottleneck, so any resource should spend no time on non
productive activities, but must have material to work on to overcome the theory of constrain and the
focus should be of automation efforts. SCADA does allow automation and the data collected from
SCADA helps aeration optimization for scheduling which will ultimately reflect any capacity
limitations. The new high energy turbo blowers save 30% energy to mix and aerate the tanks (Poole,
Neighbors, Green, Baert, Sosnowski, and Wold, 2012) and the control flow provides additional saving
with no additional capital cost. The real time monitoring and the dissolved oxygen (D.O.) measuring
in the aeration tanks allows a development of a new plant control strategies to optimize the system
performance thus consuming less power. Increasing and changing the capacity There are many options

18. Spiral Into Insanity In Hamlet
Hamlet s Spiral into Insanity
Hamlet s mental health wavers throughout the novel. Questions arise whether he in fact showed
insanity, or if his actions had legitimate reasons. Throughout the play, Hamlet struggles internally and
externally. Externally he wants to expose King Claudius in revenge of Hamlet seniors death.
Internally, Hamlet battles himself, in the sense that he doesn t know how to emotionally pursue the
situation. These factors ultimately lead to his abrupt road to insanity.
Soliloquies play an important role in Hamlet s development as a character. Hamlet expresses himself
with these soliloquies, along with sharing some of his personal struggles. Knowingly, he doubts
himself and his beliefs, often wondering if he makes the right decision. The conflict almost certainly
begins with himself, To be or not to be that is the question: Whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer the
slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles and, by opposing,
end them (Shakespeare 67). He clearly wants to avenge his father but struggles internally with himself
on how to go about his actions. Hamlet wants to know if all the trouble he goes through, really worth
the struggle.
Hamlet senior s sudden death played an important role in Hamlet s emotional stress. Strong opinions
point to the fact that maybe when the Ghost asked Hamlet to avenge him, it caused a snowball effect
towards Hamlet s insanity. Some believe that the Ghost put an

Having a sense of belonging is one of several fundamental human needs and national identity refers to
a person s sense of belonging to one country with its history, values and traditions. Since achieving
independence in 1957, the issue of Malaysia s national identity has been in the spotlight due to its
strong social, political and economical factors implication. As a multi cultural country, the search for a
national identity is not an easy undertaking as Malaysians consist of different ethnics such as Malay,
Chinese and Indian. Each ethnic group contributes their own unique culture and religion, hence

The term, vernacular architecture, was first used by architectural theorists to describe buildings that
seemed not to have been consciously designed and affected by the intellectual and artistic currents of
the Renaissance (Dell Upton, 1983).
With the growing presence of globalization and modernization, the pre industrial building heritage is
indeed under threat with modern methods prevailing. In that vein, we are seeing how the designs, use
and meanings of these traditions change within the concepts of the contemporary processes in a
globalized world (Lindsay Asquit, Marcel Vellinga, 2006).
The societal effects are evident in the negotiation of identity, and the definition and value of key
concepts like tradition, modernity and place (Lindsay Asquit, Marcel Vellinga, 2006). One of the most
engaging aspects that is relevant to the discourse of how vernacular architecture is tradition. It has
been a major theme in writings on vernacular architecture (Al Sayyad, 2004). According to the values

journey of transforming from biggest heartthrob of cricket to an influential politician is highly
impressive and motivating. He is credited for leading Pakistan to its first ever Cricket World Cup title
in1992, defeating England, thereby being termed as most successful and prominent cricketer and
captain of Pakistan. The champion cricketer surprised the world as an exceptional fast bowler and a
great all arounder, thus giving cricket an all new firm in country. He excelled not just in the cricketing
arena, but also in the political world and social ground. He retired from cricket in 1992 and entered

23. Slavery Frederick Douglass Analysis
The Wonderful Life
In Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, Frederick Douglass mentions that
slaves do not have the privilege to have an education. In Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle explains that
without happiness, doing something good will not really matter because you will not be happy. In
Slavery, Jean Jacques Rousseau mentions that war is not the key to end slavery because war is only for
states not against man to man. In Thinking in Education, John Dewey says that thinking is another
method in learning because it will help students reflect on things. Life can be wonderful if people
learn to find ways to keep that happiness in them.

Dewey says that people have dwelt especially on the negative side because we let our minds think that
there is a specific way of thinking (6). As people keep growing, their knowledge keeps developing.
While people keep learning, they have to learn to accept somethings. One of those things is by simply
being able to accept that if a paper is wrong is wrong but at least they tried. Looking at a paper or
project that is wrong sometimes frightens people but it should not be that way because those who have
bad papers become the best ones. Even though, people are wrong that should not stop with their
education because of that. Meanwhile, Douglass was doing his chores, he was able to take bread from
home and share with the little white boys who, in return, would give [him] more valuable bread of
knowledge which was able to help him with his reading and writing (2). Being wrong does not mean
that this is the end, instead is a way to motivate yourself to do the best as you can to achieve
something better. People should not be letdown when they do something wrong because no one is
perfect. People just find ways to learn even if I some cases they do thigs wrong. The whole point of
this is to be able to learn and be wrong. People should not be disappointed if they do a paper and they

1) Name the ways that the U.S. judiciary is restricted in deciding cases. How do these restrictions
affect the legal environment?
The judiciary system is defined by Article III in the Constitution and Section 2 describes the powers
and limitations that court system has. The purpose of the judiciary is to handle interpretations of the
laws created by the constitution and any disputes that arises between parties, cases may be brought to
the court, the court cannot create cases. There are 3 levels in the court system, which is true for the
state judiciary as well as the Federal level. The two lower levels attempt resolve issues while lessoning
the burden on the supreme courts. The lowest level of court is the district court aka trial courts, ...

Once a judge has been appointed, their only source of input when making decisions is the laws that
were created. They are not supposed to be influenced by outside forces, such as, media or politicians.
Because of this there is a natural buffer from decisions being my by majority rule and instead left up
to the individual judge. Since this is a check on a balance of power I see no issue with this method, if
there is an issue that rises they judge can be removed. So, this non majority based system of power is a
good compliment to the other two forms of (mostly) majority institutions, the Congress and the
Executive banches.
3) The way the U.S. Supreme Court uses judicial review varies between judicial restraint and judicial
activism. Discuss what both of these approaches seek to achieve in deciding legal issues.
The approach of judicial restraint seeks to only act when there is a clear violation of connotational
law. The idea is that the way the constitution was written represents a clearly defined law and that
unless there is a compelling and glaring violation based on fact not emotion or political view, that the
law need not be reinterpreted . When judicial activism is used the emotions and political views of the
justices may have influence over their decision making and rulings. The idea is that constitutional law
must be reviewed and reevaluated because each case is different and the law being challenged must be

25. Whole Language versus Phonics Essays
Whole Language versus Phonics
Whole Language versus Phonics has been a question among many top educational groups for years.
Which is the best way to teach kindergarten children the proper way to speak and learn the English
Language? There are many valid reasons why experts argue for both phonics and/or whole language.
Both seem to be exceptional ways to master the English Language. The purpose of this research paper
is to compare phonics versus whole language and to determine how technology can support each
approach.
The history of the use of phonics dates back to the 1700 s. Backs then, children were taught to read
through their memorization of the twenty six letter alphabet. Since many books hadn t been written,

In essence, it builds on what they expect them to already know. Part of the whole language doctrine
states that the point of reading is not to read individual words, but to read them in context. The basis
of whole language is the process of predicting the words through their meaning and context. It is not
intended to teach word decoding but rather a look say way to learn. There is no emphasis on grammar,
spelling and punctuation with this form of teaching.
What is Phonics? Phonics is the teaching of the association of sounds with letter identification. With
that, there is an extreme amount of emphasis on word decoding skills to help a student sound out
unfamiliar words. Phonics is actually a word recognition strategy that becomes a teaching method
only through heavy emphasis. Using phonetic principles, youngsters learn to associate the correct
sound with each part of a word and to recognize and pronounce words. (Farr 2004) Phonics
systematically teaches a child to break the code of written language. (Ghate 2003) Children are taught
to identify letter sound correspondence with phonics, which helps them put together a word by using
sounds.
Related Interaction
There have been many debates over which literacy instruction produces the most favorable outcomes
in terms of test scores. During the 1960 s, teachers favored the phonics approach in helping students
become literate because they believed that it made the most

Transportation sector contributes to a considerable share of energy consumption and Greenhouse Gas

transportation [1]. In 2014, 35% of energy was used in the transportation sector (21% of world energy

from the transportation sector [2]. The share of the transportation sector in a country s GHG emissions

This is a notable point especially for countries that have a high percent of emission free electricity
generation capacity and can use that emission free electricity to provide the energy needed in the
transportation sector. To cut CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050 (as decided by G8 leaders and the
European Union in 2009), a 95% carbon emission reduction should happen in transport sector [6].
However, based on the expected number of passenger cars by 2050 and knowing the emissions and
efficiency of ICEVs, the reduction target for transportation sector cannot be achieved through an
increase in efficiency of ICEVs alone [6]. Knowing this limit, different countries/jurisdictions all over
the world have invested in alternative fuel vehicles. As defined by the US Department of Energy, an
alternative fuel vehicle is a dedicated, flexible fuel, or dual fuel vehicle designed to operate on at least
one alternative fuel [8]. Biodiesel, electricity, ethanol, hydrogen, natural gas, or propane are
considered as alternative fuels in this definition [8]. In this work, we are focusing on reviewing the
incentives for vehicles that operate on hydrogen and electricity as an alternative fuel. We are not
considering biodiesel and ethanol as there is uncertainty about the capability of biofuels to fuel the
transportation sector at large scale [6]. We

While public purpose challenges are still judged by the Madison Cablevision standard today, the
Supreme Court of North Carolina has refined the doctrine s scope. To start, the court in Maready v.

economic development could meet the Madison Cablevision standard. Further clarifying the first
prong of the Madison Cablevision standard, the court in Maready held that whether an activity is

State, the court further clarified the sound basic education standard constructed in Leandro. In
addressing a claim that the state had failed to provide the students of Hoke County with a sound basic
education, the court examined a series of allegations made by the school board. The state claimed that
their actions met the Leandro standard through its combination of inputs i.e., expenditures, programs,
teachers, [and] administrators, which added up to be an aggregate that met or exceeded this Court s
definition of providing students with an opportunity for a sound basic education. However, the court
disagreed, holding that the existence of these inputs was not sufficient to meet Leandro s requirement.
Instead, the court required a higher standard, holding that each classroom should be staffed with a
competent, certified, well trained teacher, and requiring that every school be led by a well trained[,]
competent principal. This decision supplemented Leandro to provide a fuller contextual understanding
of what type of education the citizens of North Carolina had a right to receive. These two holdings
provide the standard by which education is judged today.

This in my opinion was a very interesting account of American Indian rituals. Lame Deer did a great
job on comparing and contrasting the white folks way of life with his own. He told us how Indian
children are typically never left alone which gives us a better understanding on why he was so afraid
of being alone on the hilltop. I feel like in this story I really got a better understanding of the Indian
way of life. They seem to be very tight knit group who value tradition above everything. Family seems
to be the most important theme as demonstrated by his grandmothers willingness to cut forty pieces of
her own flesh in order to make the rattle. This whole aspect about them is admirable but at the same
time I feel like they don t really take any actual logic into account. The whole vision determines your

never really experienced any of these things as im not a Sioux. I do think though that this story can be
related into our modern world in the sense that many kids are pushed into choosing a life career at a
relatively young age. Lame Deer was only 16 at the time but that is only a mere two years younger
than kids today. To some extent I found admirable that he at such a young age had already known

What ethical standards do the authors use in making their assessments? Wyman did not give many

Roosevelt was not passionate about helping the Jews by stopping the Nazi group. Breitman and
Lichtman views the response of the U.S. government and the President on a more positive note. They
suggested that Roosevelt was working behind the scenes on majority of his attempts to execute a plan
to aid the Jews. They thought that Roosevelt was working around the political rim without stepping on
toes that could have put his presidency in jeopardy. Breitman and Lichtman used a more
understanding approach in deducing their assessments. They looked on Roosevelt s side of the story. It
could have been the political hoops he had to jump through that many civilians would not understand.
Even the President of a country has limitations to his power (Breitman and Lictman). 4.) What ethical
standard would you use to evaluate the conduct of President Roosevelt and the U.S. government? I

History 201

The Race Towards Independence In the 1770 s, Great Britain established a number of colonies in
North America. The Americans thought of themselves as citizens of Great Britain and subjects of King
George III. Over the span of ten years, Great Britain has experienced deterioration in their relationship
with the thirteen colonies. There were numerous factors that came into play in relation to the conflict
such as the Navigation Acts and Colonial Legislatures, which eventually led to the Revolutionary War
of April 1776. What started out as a minor conflict concluded with a war for Independence. It all
started when the British went to war with the French also known as the French and Indian War.
Following their victory in the French and Indian War in 1763, Great Britain took control of the French
holdings in North America, outside the Caribbean. The British sought to maintain peaceful relations
with those Indian tribes that had allied with the French, and keep them separated from the American
frontiersmen. To this end, the Royal Proclamation of 1763 restricted settlement west of the
Appalachian Mountains as this was designated an Indian Reserve. Disregarding the proclamation,
some groups of settlers continued to move west and establish farms. The proclamation was soon
modified and was no longer a hindrance to settlement, but the fact that it had been promulgated
without their prior consultation angered the colonists

Stuck between 1846 and 1848, the US and Mexico (two neighbors) went to battle, which was a crucial
affair for the two countries, thus massive renovation of the region. The way was essential in the
generation of a new identity for the people. Following the end of the war, Mexico lost approximately

Background Information The hostilities between Mexico and the United States began in 1846 prior to
its continuation until 1847. According to the historical accounts, Mexico did claim the Nueces River
as its northeastern boarder. On the other hand, the US claimed the Rio Grande River (McCaffrey,
