The Pros And Cons Of Roe V. Wade
In 1971 Jane Roe attempted to have an abortion, but was opposed by Henry Wade, the District
Attorney of Dallas who was determined to enforce the Texas law that made abortion, unless medically
necessary, illegal. The conflict only grew in strength and publicity until it landed at the Supreme Court
in the now legendary case of Roe v. Wade. When the legal battle was over, women were granted the
right to abortion in the second trimester, a right that continues to cause conflict 40 years later. The case
ran from 1971 1973 and it got a heated debate started across the United States. The topic of abortion
had always been debated heavily but Roe v. Wade sparked a wave of protests and new opinions. The
argument over abortion prior to Roe v. Wade is similar to what it is today; there are those who support
abortion (pro choice) and those who don t (pro life). Of course each has its exceptions to what is
viewed as acceptable. Many supported abortion because women went to extremely dangerous lengths
to terminate their pregnancies. ¨In 1965, illegal abortions made up one sixth of all pregnancy and
childbirth related deaths¨, (Planned Parenthood; Roe v. Wade). Many religious leaders and figures
were anti abortion because of their beliefs, ¨Doe v. Bolton [410 U.S. 179 (1973)] , the Supreme Court
ruled that the unborn child is not a ¨person¨ at any time before birth...¨ (The Catholic Advance; A Non
Person).
The abortion laws prior to Roe v. Wade in Texas were, for the most part,

Teacher Tenure Essay

Teacher Tenure
Today, there seems to be a push to change the policy of teacher tenure. Roughly 2.3 million public
school teachers in the United States have tenure a perk reserved for the noblest of professions
(professors and judges also enjoy such rights). (Stephey) Tenure refers to a policy which gives
teachers a permanent contract that effectively ensuring them a guarantee of employment for life.
Stephey continues to state, Though tenure doesn t guarantee lifetime employment, it does make firing
teachers a difficult and costly process, one that involves the union, the school board, the principal, the
judicial system and thousands of dollars in legal fees. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When one is a teacher they know that they need to teach the material that is needed for students
succeed and excel during testing. Teachers should have no fear in being dismissed if they are doing the
job that they were hired for. In the other hand, if one is not doing their job teaching then that is simply
one owns fault when getting fired. There are many workers who work hard to get what they deserve
such as high pay and benefits. Then why do are there laws which protects teacher s jobs only? In
school districts across America there are stories as found in an article from Meghan Mathis as she
writes, New York faced intense scrutiny and criticism in 2009 when it came to light it had been paying
full salaries to nearly 700 tenured teachers who had been accused of poor performance or wrongdoing.
These teachers were paid not to teach, but rather to sit in a guarded room from start to finish of each
day. How is the government benefitting our society by using tax payer s dollars to pay for teachers to
idly sit in a room when these dollars could be used to introduce new programs into the classroom or
better yet a teacher willing to do the job?
Why are tax payer s dollars wasted by spending this money on terminating teachers? Writing in Time,
Stephey states that Some school districts have resorted to separation

Wasteful Gov t Spending on Education in 3rd Worlds
National and international development is a human instinct and serves only one specific purpose;
which is the advancement of humanity and specifically the betterment of the quality of life for
everyone. The terminology development usually includes such areas as foreign aid, healthcare,
equality, infrastructure, economics, human rights and education as well as many others. International
development differs compared to national development; it was created by governments and
institutions after World War Two in order to concentrate on topics like easing poverty and to improve
living conditions in destroyed countries, but more importantly in former colonies which were now free
and to become part of a different and hopefully better world. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Furthermore, violations of human rights and famine have continued for decades or at least since the
last colonial powers pulled out of a country and left them to themselves without ever thinking about
the consequences of a power vacuum and leaving a particular nation without an economic structure or
any sufficiently developed educational system. In World crisis in education: The view from the 1980 s
, Philip H. Coombs looks back to the 50 s and 60 s and describes the unfortunate situation of TWN
and how little has changed. The book might as well be called ......: The view from 2012 , and be
published this year again without any or little change, and probably no one would notice that the book
was written three decades earlier. According to Coombs, western style education was new to TWN
and trying to carry out this system immediately after decolonization would bring instant and
noticeable changes, with a few exceptions, these WIN s ideas of how to educate efficiently never took
a foothold in the third world, rather seem to be nothing but a constant investment without noticeable
results. Even now, countless NGO s and foreign government agencies pour large amounts of money
and time into undeveloped states, and it gives the impression that very little is accomplished. What is
astonishing is that already back in the 1960 s a large bubble of optimism has burst but since then
attempts continue to blow up the same bubble

Maya Deren
Marina de Oliveira Ventura
Beginning my personal analysis of At Land ,the waves mean that Maya is being dragged away from
her own life. When she wakes up in the beach again, she has the opportunity of starting all over again,
as the water represents a new start. As we see the waves in a reverse motion, they look like a carpet, as
she was privileged to start again.
As she climbs the rocks on the beach, the transition of the wild to the table means a transition in our
own life: when we stop being children and get in the social world. But as we can see for her position,
there s a moment in between the teenage years, when we re stuck in the middle of both scenarios. As
she appears for the first time at the top of the table, we can see ... Show more content on

But unfortunately, that s not possible.
As she accepts her role and keeps looking for the chess piece, we can see her walking with a man,
what means she s completely dragged to the adult world. The moment she starts walking with the man,
who changes 4 times, it represents the love life. When we enter the adult world, our main relation is
with the opposite sex, and Maya symbolized this commitment as they were walking together through a
road.
When she gets in the house, it represents the end of the love relationship. The man lying in the bed is a
representation of love. He still awake, and seems to be really attentive to Maya. That s what happens
when we break up: although the relationship no longer exists, all the memories, and the representation
that the two have about each other are still very vivid.
The moment she comes back to the beach, climbing down the mountain, it s like she s returning to her
origins, descending from her social role. It s her elderly years. At this time of life, it s like we came
back to our childhood: no more role playing, no more social commitments, and no more strings. When
she see the women playing chess, she understand that we only have fully control of who we are at the
end of our journey, but then it doesn t really matter: they don t seem to be ecstatic to know how to play
the game, they seem calm and peaceful. For me, they represent other generations of Maya s family,

You Can Never Predict What Life Is Going At You
You can never predict what life is going to throw at you. Until I was about 9 years old, I lived in
Groves, Texas which was located by the Gulf of Mexico. Groves was a small town, so small that I had
to go to school in Port Arthur, the city right next to Groves. I had a small house and a big backyard
with lots of trees. My dad also kept a small ship and a boat in our yard, and I always thought about
what it might be like to board the ship. My days would be spent playing with my little sister and
hanging out in the yard, exploring every inch of our lawn. One hot September day, I was in my fourth
grade class when kids were being checked out. My teacher explained to those of us still in class that a
hurricane seemed to be heading our way. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Traffic was terrible. It was more than terrible, we would only move what felt like an inch at a time.
People were running out of gas and there were no gas stations open for miles. My dad kept the air
conditioning off to preserve the battery or gas, and it was blazing hot out. I remember being drenched
in sweat, wondering where we were going to end up. When it came time for me to sleep, the car was
so packed I had to move in awkward positions to get comfortable and use cardboard boxes as pillows.
We could not afford to pull over for potty breaks so my parents had my sister and I pee in a jar. Gross
right? But that was all we could do. There was a countdown to when the hurricane was coming and we
had to get as far away as possible. Even though we traveled for days, we only got as far as Woodsville
which was only about two hours from where I lived. A two hour trip had been stretched out to days
because of the traffic. We were notified to find shelter and we ended up in a high school gym.
We were given two cots since there were four family members and we huddled our way to the middle
of the gym. There were a lot of people, all just as miserable looking as we were. I was so exhausted
that I fell asleep on the cot about five minutes after arriving to our shelter. I slept so long and so deep,
the hurricane passed over our shelter and I missed it. When I woke up my mom told me about how the
hurricane passed and that we

Interval Training Versus Aerobic Exercise Analysis
Interval training and continuous aerobic exercise are two of the most common cardio exercises
practiced by athletes today. However, one is slightly better than the other when looking at performance
increases. An easy way to measure performance increases is to examine the VO2 max of an individual
before and after a training period. VO2 max is the measure of how much oxygen a body can take in
from the air. It is a great reflection of physical fitness because it reflects how efficiently a person can
use oxygen which is needed for most exercises, especially cardio. Interval training is when a person
switches between two activities that vary in intensity or effort. Continuous aerobic exercise is when a
person performs an activity at the same intensity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anaerobic energy is energy that is produced in the absence of oxygen. On the other hand, aerobic
energy is energy that is produced in the presence of oxygen. The difference in energy pathway may
explain the difference in VO2 increases between interval training and continuous aerobic exercise.
Many people struggle to incorporate cardio into their workout routine because they think they must
run endless miles to see results. This excuse is invalid because interval training can provide just as
many health benefits, if not more, than continuous aerobic exercise. Even though interval training has
been shown to improve performance in many people, a blend of interval training and continuous
aerobic exercise that is designed for an individual s goals is the best approach to implement cardio.
Interval training results in greater performance increases and more motivation to exercise than
continuous aerobic training in many types of people, including well trained athletes, diabetics,
children, and people with Down syndrome. However, the most important thing is for people to
incorporate cardio into their exercise

A Brief Note On The Alzheimer s Association
Overall, people who take care of dementia patients must handle health care responsibilities of the
person with dementia more often than caregivers of people who do not have dementia. Some of the
common tasks outlined by the Alzheimer s Association include assisting with daily activities around
the house, managing the medications, helping with activities of daily living such as getting dressed
and bathing, and providing support for the person with dementia as the disease progresses. Dementia
residents require significantly more assistance with activities of daily living and help around the house
in comparison to other older adults (Alzheimer s Association, 2016). Due to the time consuming
responsibilities and the increasing level of care required during this stage, this might be a time when
informal caregivers outsource some the responsibility to formal caregivers and facilities equipped for
the level of intensity required.
Another task caregivers face as the dementia progresses in the person they are taking care of is
communication. The Alzheimer s Association provides a pamphlet on the most prevalent behavior
changes and recommendations on how the informal caregiver should handle such changes. Common
changes in communication include a gradual loss of ability to find the right words and organize
thoughts and emotions effectively, a decline in the amount of verbal communication used, and going
back to one s first language (Alzheimer s Association, 2014b). As the disease

Pakistan Is A Complex Country
Pakistan is a complex country, both because of harsh physical terrain and because of a historical
unpredictable government. Pakistan is constantly in the news, and a topic of discussion in The United
States. Many of the fighters the American forces are fighting in Afghanistan come from Pakistan, or at
least find a safe haven in the mountains of western Pakistan. In addition, Pakistan is a nuclear armed
country that has a shaky government at best. I find it fascinating that a country that has a government
with such a sporadic history filled with attempts to overthrow it and coups maintain a nuclear arsenal.
How was this possible? I know that the United States and its allies put much effort into keeping
countries such as Iran and North Korea from attaining nuclear weapons. What was going on during the
development of Pakistan s nuclear program? While Pakistan is an ally of the United States, in the
region that Pakistan is located that could change quickly. In addition, I feel that you must prove that
you are a stable country and society before you are permitted to possess such powerful weapons.
Pakistan provides a very interesting topic of discussion that some people may not be aware. The two
reasons listed above are the main reason I chose to write about Pakistan, knowing little else about the
country, but through my research, I found that there is more to Pakistan than just those two areas,
beginning with how the country initially formed. Pakistan formed on

Dead Sea Scrolls The Dead Sea Scrolls are a group of 800 900 manuscripts found in caves at Qumran
east of Jerusalem and north west of the Dead Sea. The first scrolls were discovered in 1947 by a
shepherd boy who wandered into a cave after a stray goat. The texts are believed to have been hidden
in eleven caves for safe keeping prior to the destruction of Rome in A.D.70. The scrolls are a
collection of biblical and non biblical documents comprising of the Hebrew Bible, (every book except
Esther); the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha; rules for community life; biblical commentaries; a

This discovery shows the extraordinary accuracy between the two sets of manuscripts. The texts are
believed to have been written by a strict Jewish sect called the Essenes. This religious community led
by one they called the Teacher of Righteousness lived a demanding routine of self discipline. Their
interpretation of the law was severe, they held fellowship meals to which admission was closely
guarded. They interpreted prophetic scripture as referring to events of their own day and believed that
they had an important part to play in the hope of Israel. 2
HOW MUCH CAN THEY HELP US UNDERSTAND THE NEW TESTAMENT? The dead sea
scrolls offer unique information from a time during the second temple period when Jewish religious
and political life in Palestine was full of corruption and conflict. There were three main Jewish groups
during this time; the Pharisees, the Sadducees and the Essenes. It has also been confirmed that there
were many other groups and movements in Secondary Temple Judaism. It is now evident that Judaism
in the land of Israel was open to Greek influences from the 3rd century onwards in the areas of
language, economics, military strategy, politics, culture and religion .3 The scrolls shed light on the
time when Jesus and John the Baptist lived and the beliefs of the early Christians. We are given
information on the way things were at that time; the laws of the day, things that Jesus and the apostles

What Is Malcolm X s View Of Religion
The opinions that many people have about religion derive from their association with churches,
mosques, and other places of worship. However, Malcolm X defied the usual curve of religious
doctrine and embraced what he felt was right for him and those who shared his views. In his
autobiography, Malcolm X abandoned atheism to become a follower of the Nation of Islam (NOI) and
later, he ended up following Eastern Islam. In the Autobiography of Malcolm X, Malcolm s views and
his idealism is derived from his practice of Islam and his will to fight for the rights of African
Americans also come from the same base.
The theme of religion is introduced in the autobiography during Malcolm s time in the state prison of
Massachusetts. While in prison, he started to study books in a small library. Later in 1948, Malcolm
was moved to Norfolk Prison. There was little violence in this prison and inmates could debate and
study freely. While in prison, Malcolm studied many books such as religion, history, literature,
linguistics, and biology. Malcolm first heard about the Nation of Islam from his home when Reginald,
his brother requested him to do so, and this became his first step into full conversion to Islam.
Reginald told him about a spiritual leader called Elijah Muhammad who preached against the evils of
white people and compared them as the devils. Consequently, he recalled the way his family was split

Titration Of An Unknown Solution
A titration is a method to determine the concentration of an unknown solution by using the known
concentration of another solution. An analyte is the concentration of an unknown solution . A titrant is
the concentration of a known solution. The glassware needed to perform a titration are a buret, a flask,
and an indicator of pH meter. The buret sends the second reactant to the flask. An indicator detects the
endpoint of this reaction. Standardization is the process in which you determine the concentration of
the titrant before performing the titration. One would need to make a standard solution to be precise,
and make sure the titration experiment is being done correct. The equivalence point is point in the
titration when the quantity of titrant is the right amount for the reaction with the analyte. ... Show

You prepare a standard solution by using the M1V1=M2V2 formula, and putting the information to
solve the equation. An indicator is going to have a reaction with hydroxide ions or hydrogen ions to
determine whether the substance is a base or acid. The role of an indicator in a titration is to determine
how many oxygen or hydroxide ions are in a solution. The laboratory method that is used to titrate an
unknown strong acid solution is a titration. When you drop NaOH ions the OH ions unite with H ions
creating water which leave less H ions in the solution making the solution less acidic. The more
NaOH ions you add the solution will eventually change color due to the indicator. The data that should
be collected during the titration in order to calculate the concentration of HCl should be the number of
moles, the volume of the solution, and the amount dropped to make the solution less acidic. You
calculate the molarity/ concentration of the unknown HCl solution by using the formula

Alfred Stevens La Parisienne Japonisme Essay
Alfred Stevens La Parisienne Japonaise is a painting of oil on canvas painted in 1872. This artwork I
have chosen is a clear example of Japonisme from its time. The artist s work of Japonisme blossomed
after the Japanese western trade agreement at the Paris World Fair of 1855. The influence of Japanese
goods and art in the western world embarked a strong blend of culture in art. Prints, as well as other
decorative materials, became exotic goods in the west.
Alfred Stevens was a Belgian painter who was greatly influenced by Japanese culture he housed
numerous trinkets and Japanese goods. His painting shows a young woman dressed in a blue kimono,
a Japanese robe, while holding a fan. During this time of artistic breakthrough, Stevens worked ...

The culture of what is painted and the medium of the painting display interculturalism. The Kimono
robe gave a sense of intimacy within the subjects. The blankness of the backgrounds emphasizes the
women in the foreground and of course their attire. La Parisienne Japonaise was meant to highlight
exoticism in foreign fashion.
Hybrid art follows the contemporary art movement from centuries ago. The term refers to the
combination, or blend, of two different forms of art. This could mean the blurring of cultural, artistic,
and traditional boundaries. The development of these combinations creates new artistic concepts and
documentation of cultural influences. Those of the west may have underrated the simplicity of
Japanese art. The adoption of western style painting gave those of the east the chance to prove they
can be just as talented.
Wisdom, Impression, Sentiment by Chi Kan Jo is an example of Japanese adoption of western
techniques. The painting is from 1899 and made by oil on canvas. This medium defers from those of
traditional Japanese such as ink and print, opening new opportunities. Nudity was not an ideal for
Japanese art at the time, however it was so in the west. This piece shows three nude females in their
mere neutrality. The similar to the piece by Alfred Stevens, the golden, planar background attests to
that of a Japanese folding screen. These incorporations

Joan of Arc, nicknamed The Maid of Orléans , is viewed as a courageous woman of France for her
part amid the Lancastrian period of the Hundred Years War, and was consecrated as a Roman Catholic
Saint. While Joan of Arc is a major medieval religious figure she was clearly a huge advocate of
violent bloodshed and she used religion to justify it. When Joan made her case to help France win the
Hundred s years war she claimed that she was sent by God to assist England in the war, The King
should not turn away from, or reject, the Pucelle, who says she has been sent by God (The Life of Joan

and that it was her duty to help assist her country in war. After convincing King Charles to help him in
the Hundreds year war he sends her to the siege of Orleans as part of a relief mission. Joan of Arc s
participation in the war boosted French moral leading to victory. Eventually Joan of Arc is captured

Lev Vygotsky Pretend Play
Free from adult obligations and unburdened by serious responsibilities, children are likely to spend
many of their days role playing imaginative scenarios, an activity known as pretend play [CITE
CITE]. Typically appearing around the age of twelve months, pretend play is initially central to the
self, before expanding to include peers and objects [CITE]. As well as being an effective way to keep
children entertained, prominent psychologist Lev Vygotsky believed pretend play to be a complex
process which fosters the development of vital cognitive operations such as self regulation (impulse
control, self direction, planning, and appropriate social behaviour) and symbolic thought (assigning an
alternative meaning to something), known together ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Social speech is the first to occur, typically around the age of two, and involves external
communication between the child and another person [CITE]. At approximately three years of age,
children begin to guide, plan and reflect on their behaviour by talking to themselves out loud, a
process known as private speech [GILLINGHAM BERK]. The developmental benefits of private
speech are significant due to its ability to assist in overcoming obstacles, by allowing the child to
verbally plan and organise their behaviour before and during they carry out an action [CITE].
Additionally, research has found that private speech often occurs concurrently with pretend play. In a
study performed by Krafft and Berk [CITE], a positive correlation was observed between children that
engaged in pretend play and observations of private speech. Another study (observational) also found
a positive correlation when comparing the rates of private speech between a traditional preschool
which encouraged pretend play, and a Montessori preschool which actively discouraged pretend play.
In sum, private speech is more likely to occur during pretend play. According to Vygotsky, self
regulating thought (a component of executive function) is the internalisation of private speech, also
referred to as inner speech [CITE]. As the final form of speech, inner speech serves the same self
regulating function as private speech, however, it is inaudible [CITE]. Whilst a concrete explanation
of the function of private speech during pretend play has yet to be agreed upon, it has been
hypothesised that private speech is beneficial as it allows the child to distance themselves from the
activity, thus permitting top down control over particular impulses [CARLSON BECK). In other
words, by verbally calculating their options, children are able to see the bigger picture undistracted by
their impulses, allowing them to weigh up the behavioural

A Better Map Of Europe
Christine, need a better map of Europe
EUROPE
Europe is the 6th largest continent and is actually a vast peninsula of the great Eurasian land mass.
Regions
Europe can be divided into seven geographic regions: Scandinavia (Iceland, Norway, Sweden,
Finland, and Denmark); the British Isles (the United Kingdom and Ireland); W Europe (France,
Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Monaco); S Europe (Portugal, Spain, Andorra, Italy,
Malta, San Marino, and Vatican City); Central Europe (Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria,
Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary); SE Europe (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and
Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, and the European
part of Turkey); and E Europe (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, the European
portion of Russia, and by convention the Transcaucasian countries of Georgia, Armenia, and
Azerbaijan).
Europe is a unique continent, which is not surrounded by water from all directions, and has an
overland border with the neighbouring Asia. Physiographically, it occupies the northwestern part of
the large landmass known as Eurasia and surrounded from the north by the Arctic Ocean, from the
west by the Atlantic Ocean, from the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and from the southeast by the
Black Sea.
Definition of correct border between two continents was a big question for geographers and
politicians. Nowadays it is commonly delineated by the Ural Mountains in

Five Platonic Solids
The Five Platonic Solids The five platonic solids are the tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron,
and the icosahedron. They are named for the Greek philosopher Plato. Plato wrote about them in The
Timaeus (c.360 B.C.) in which he paired each of the four classical elements, earth, air, water, and fire
with a regular solid. Earth was paired with the cube, air with the octahedron, water with the
icosahedron, and fire with the tetrahedron. The fifth Platonic solid, the dodecahedron, Plato says that,

element, the ether and postulated that the heavens were made of this element, but he had no interest in

Some people credit Pythagoras with their discovery. Others say he may have been only familiar with
them and that the octahedron and icosahedron belong to Theaetetus. Theaetetus was the first to give a
mathematical description of all five and could have been responsible for the first piece of proof that no
other regular polyhedra are out there. A net is the shape that is made by unfolding a 3D figure. A net is
made up of all the faces of a figure. For a solid to be considered a platonic it needs each face to be a
regular polygon and each vertex must come together because if only two came together the figure
would collapse on itself. The sum of each interior angle of the faces meeting at a vertex must be less
than 360 degrees. A polyhedra solid must have all flat faces, whilst a non polyhedra solid has a least
one of its surfaces that is not flat. Regular means all angles are of equal measure, all faces are
congruent or equal in every way, and all edges are of equal length. 3D means that shape has width,
depth and height. A polygon is a closed shape in a plane figure with at least five straight edges. A dual
is a Platonic Solid that fits inside another Platonic Solid and connects to the midpoint of each

Difference Between Freewill And Determinism
Every day, we are faced with what we believe to be choices.
Definition: freewill could be described as...
Those that say we have libertarian freewill argue that we do have the morally significant kind of free
will but that determinism is false. For these people, freewill is incompatible with determinism. They
believe in individual liberty and personal responsibility. They believe that when we act freely, we are
not subject to cause. We have the right to blame or praise the person for their choice.
People like to think that they are the authors of their own actions. They like to believe that people can
be responsible for their actions and even that they can have the will for specific actions.
From a purely metaphysical perspective, if we don t have free will, why are ... Show more content on

They believe that God has given us the ability to choose for ourselves what to do. People who believe
in freewill assume that there is something more to us than just the combination of genetic and physical
influences that affect our actions.
Someone who believes that everything is determined and that we do not have morally significant
freedom could be called a determinist. They would argue that everything that happens can be
explained by previous causes. By saying that we have freewill would be saying that we are somehow
unaffected by the causal chain of events.
Science is increasing showing that what we do is causally determined, that there are underlying causes
in our brains.
The physical world is deterministic. Mental states are brain states, brain states are biological states and
biological states are physical states.
This means that our decisions would be just a lot of consecutive physical events in our brains that lead
to a specific outcome.
Those who reject freewill believe that an individual s actions are merely a product of the individual s

Comparing Valentine And To His Coy Mistress
Compare Carol Ann Duffy s Valentine to Andrew Marvell s To His Coy Mistress In this assignment I
will be comparing two love poems Carol Ann Duffy s Valentine to Andrew Marvell s To His Coy
Mistress . The poem Valentine was written is the twentieth century and in it the speaker uses onion as
a metaphor to show her love. The poem To His Coy Mistress was written in the seventeenth century
and is about the poet trying to persuade his Mistress to sleep with him. Valentine by Carol Ann Duffy
is very different to any other love poem as you would expect to read something romantic, instead she
writes about an onion. The poem is divided into four main stanzas and each stanza tells us something
new about the relationship ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She explains that she does not wish to be unkind. She is being realistic. I m trying to be truthful. Not a
cute card or a kiss o gram she does not believe in giving commercial tokens of love like a card or a
bunch of flowers. In the third stanza she gives the onion, I give you an onion She uses a metaphor. Its
fierce kiss will stay on you lip the bitter taste on an onion remains on a person s lips. The memory of a
kiss can stay with one forever. Possessive and faithful as we are, for as long as we are She suggests
that love affairs only last for the time that two people are interested in each other or it could mean till
they die. The fourth stanza carries on with the extended metaphor as she insists that he accepts her gift
Take it . She compares the loops of an onion to a wedding ring and implies that marriage can deaden
love and passion. Marriage is lethal in her opinion. In the extended metaphor she expresses her
feeling, sometimes people never recover from a broken romance. They will continue to experience
heartache, pain, bitterness. Its scent will cling to your fingertips, cling to your knife. The repetition of
the word cling is effective. The word knife conveys the image of a wound. The poet has obviously
been hurt in previous relationships. As we just saw above the title of the poem is Valentine s and we
first expect it to be a romantic poem but as we read on we see that it had

focus of Alice Walker s Everyday Use . Dee and Maggie s characters are the vessels that Walker uses
to demonstrate the difference between appreciating possessions for their usefulness as well as their
personal significance and their contrasting value as a trendy, materialistic connection. There is a
palpable difference between Maggie and Dee, both in physical appearance as well as in personality

Maggie who knows how to quilt and chewed checkerberry snuff, already knows what her life has to
offer. Her knowledge of her future is derived from her knowledge of her ancestry. There appears to be
no rancor in her acceptance of this. When the climactic scene occurs and Dee asks Can I have these
quilts? (145), Maggie s first implied reaction is one of surprise and anger; I heard something fall in the
kitchen, and a minute later the kitchen door slammed (145). But as someone never used to winning
anything, or having anything reserved for her (146), Maggie succumbs and offers to let Dee have
them. Although Maggie knows how to quilt (146), she is able to comprehend the deeper personal
value of the quilts, and states that she can member Grandma Dee without the quilts (146). Despite
their value as an item of everyday use, the quilts are meaningful to Maggie, much in the way they are
to her mother who remembers having quilted them with Big Dee. The scraps, the bits and pieces and
one teeny faded blue piece, about the size of a penny matchbox, that was from Great Grandpa Ezra s
uniform that he wore in the Civil War. (145) hold deep significance to Maggie. Dee, on the other hand,
is portrayed in a very different light by Walker. Commencing with her physical appearance; Dee is
lighter than Maggie, with nicer hair and a fuller figure (141). However, their differences do not end
there. Dee is intelligent,

Essay On How Hormones Can Affect A Woman s Behavior
How Hormones Can Affect A Woman s Moods
Women have a relatively unique hormonal system when compared to men. Men have a relatively
static hormone system with stable levels of pituitary and gonadal hormones throughout their daily
lives, suffering from decreasing levels of testosterone after the age of 30 40. Usually this gradual
change does not markedly affect male mood.
Women, on the other hand, spend much of their reproductive lives with a cyclical pattern of hormones
that change on a day to day basis. The cycle repeats itself every month and the fluctuations alone can
contribute to changes in everyday mood.
In the beginning of the cycle, the LH and FSH levels are low. The FSH gradually rises in order to

If the symptoms are relatively mild, she can take vitamins, eat healthy, and exercise in order to
improve many of the mood symptoms. If the symptoms are severe and a woman does not wish to
become pregnant, oral contraceptives can even out the symptoms. Still other women see their doctor
and get prescribed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs like Prozac, Lexapro, or Celexa.
These can reduce many of the emotional symptoms so typical of having PMDD or even milder
premenstrual symptoms.
Hyperthyroid Conditions
Women are at a higher risk of hypothyroid or hyperthyroid conditions when compared to men. This
means they have a higher risk of these hormonally related conditions affecting mood and outlook on
life. Hypothyroidism is much more common than hyperthyroidism but both syndromes can lead to
mood disorders and mental symptoms.
In hypothyroidism, the main mood symptoms include the following:
Depressive symptoms
Tiredness or fatigue even when getting enough sleep at night.
Difficulty sleeping
If the woman has hyperthyroidism, she likely

The Importance Of The Basketball Game

think about was this game. I got to school and all me and the rest of the team talked about was beating
them. We all talked about it all day and that s all our team could think about. It was about 2:50 and I

finally let out and now I was very nervous because I knew how big this game was and so did all my
teammates. We were very quiet as the girls game was being played before ours. We all sat together but
not a single word was said to anybody. Once it was halftime of the girls game our coach told us to go
get changed. At this point you could tell how nervous our whole team was. We got down to the locker
room and changed. Our coach came down to the locker room with a giant speaker so we knew he was
up to something. He told us all to sit down and listen. So we sat down and he started playing a song.
He told us to put our heads down, close our eyes, and just imagine in our minds winning the game. We
all thought he was crazy for thinking a song would change the way the game went. Once the song was
over we had to go upstairs and wait till the girls game was over. They only had 1 minute left and my
hands started getting really sweaty. It was probably the longest minute of my life. When the buzzer for
the girls game went off my stomach dropped to the ground. I knew it was time to go out. We ran out of
the locker room and every seat in the stands was full of people. We only had 5 minutes to warm up
and that was the fastest 5 minutes of my life. The buzzer went off and we had to go sit on the bench.
They started calling our names and when they called mine it was a really exciting feeling. Now both
teams had their starting 5 on the court. The game started right when we got on the court and got set up.

In 1865, the Civil war was finally brought to an end. The five years of war was the nation s most

Protein Synthesis And The Proteins
Protein synthesis starts when the mRNA binds to a small ribosomal subunit and the first codon (AUG)
is positioned correctly for the initiation of protein synthesis. The AUG codon then base pairs with the
anticodon of tRNA carrying methionine. This methionine eventually becomes the first Amino Acid in
the polypeptide chain. Now a large ribosomal subunit binds to the complex and the reaction of protein
synthesis itself can begin. (Fig. 3) A ribosome has two sites where tRNA can bind. As a result, of the
events outlined above, the initiation codon, AUG, on the mRNA molecule is positioned at the first of
these sites on the ribosome, the peptidyl (P) site. The mRNA codon for the second Amino Acid is
lined up with the second site, the aminoacyl (A) site. From this point, the polypeptide chain elongates
by a cycle of three steps: The first step is the binding of the next tRNA to an anticodon complementary
to the next mRNA codon. The amino Acid carried by this trNA will be the next amino acid in the
polypeptide chain. The second step is the peptidyl transferase reaction, which results in the peptide
bond formation. The peptidyl transferase enzyme, which catalyses the reaction, is an integral part of
the large ribosomal unit. This enzyme attaches the first Amino Acid to the second one by a peptide
bond, so that the first tRNA is now empty and the second is holding both amino acids. The third step
in the cycle moves the ribosome along mRNA. This brings the next codon to the

Food Imparts Cultural Identity
Cultural identity formulates the foundation from which each aspect of life is built, those key aspects
being represented through food. By mirroring essential elements of life, food infuses cultural identity,

cultural identity, shaping their many beliefs, and displaying one s ethnic background, acting as the

Variation Of Life Expectancy
Introduction
One interesting question in mind is, How long can I live? Knowing how long one can live, or at least
have an idea about it may change people s way of living. People nowadays have grown more
conscious of their health, the environment their living in and their lifestyle.
According to Max Roser, life expectancy has increased rapidly since the Enlightenment. In a pre
modern poor world, life expectancy was around 30 years in all regions of the world. In the early
century, life expectancy started to increase in the early industrialized countries while it stayed low in
the rest of the world. Over the last decades, global inequality of life expectancy has decreased. Since
1900, the global average life expectancy has more than doubled, and is now approaching 70 years.
Life expectancy refers to the number of years a person is expected to live base on the statistical
average. It differs by geographical area, and depends on several variables such as gender, lifestyle,
access to healthcare, economic growth rate, environment, etc. The concept of life expectancy has been
used in different fields such as plant or animal ecology, and actuarial science.
This project aims to determine the factors that could mostly explain the variation of life expectancy
per country through regression analysis. The explanatory variables considered are real GDP growth
rate, health care index, pollution index, traffic index, literacy rate and gender. The response variable is

The Flaws and Shortcomings of African Historiography
History is formed through a combination of personal experiences, psychological state, personal
objectives, relation with the interviewer, position in society and many other factors that cannot be

illustrate the American Dream, Horatio Alger s Ragged Dick and the life of Colin Powell, the
secretary of State. The importance of money can be seen in Ragged Dick, Dick is said to be successful
when he had his wage raised from two dollars to six dollars. In the last sentence of the story A young
gentleman on the way to fame and fortune. It is clear that getting a good job and earning more money
is the goal of success. In the other hand, the life of Colin Powell not only illustrates the importance of
money for success, but also fame. Colin Powell, who is an African American from a poor family in
New York, struggled to become the secretary of State. He represents the American Dream because he
started from the bottom of the society and then become successful, but what is the elements he has for
people to define him as successful? Money and fame. I think without the fame he had for being one of
the most important person in the American government, the general public would not define him as
successful.
What is the problem of this fixed identity of success? I think it is because the identities lead to
overemphasize on money and fame. In the sport industry in America, it has change from promoting
sport to a moneymaking business. Many sport players initially start to play the sport purely for the
enjoyment, they practiced hard and hope that one

Elijah The Prophet By Elijah
Elijah the Prophet
I have decided to write my Old Testament essay on the mysterious prophet Elijah. According to the
bible, in the book of Kings, Elijah was not only a devoted prophet of God, but he also served as a
worker who lived in the northern kingdom of Israel, under King Ahab s reign. Elijah is remembered
for his remarkable faith and devotion to God. In writing this essay, I will tell the story of one the many
adventures that occurred in Elijah s lifetime. Of course, there are so many alterations and rewritten
versions of the bible, that I have no idea what to believe. No one truly knows what happened, for
everyone who could have, died long ago. Either way, all the different versions of the story seem to
have the same basic outcome. In telling you this, I will try to incorporate the information that is
mentioned throughout the book, The Old Testament Story, Ninth Edition (by John H. Tullock and
Mark McEntire) and some of what I have been taught myself over my twenty eight years of life.
It all began when King Ahab, and his deceitful wife Jezebel demanded for their kingdom to worship
the false God of Baal. As a result, they ordered all the prophets of the Lord to be put to death. Elijah
was the only one to survive this horrible purge and went to confront King Ahab. He told the King that
a three year drought would be brought upon Israel. This was to challenge the people s false prophet,
Baal and eventually teach them a very valuable lesson in whose God was real.

Examples Of Cross Cultural Conflict In The Tiger s Daughter
Introduction The Tiger s Daughter by Bharati Mukherjee is a realistic novel of the dual culture based
identity of the author who faces the mental duality due to the changes in the culture in the long left
India. She found difficult to adapt to the culture, customs, and traditions, which she depicts through
her female protagonists cultural crisis. The proposed study is an attempt to throw light on to the cross
cultural conflict of the 22 year old Tara when she revisits India after a seven year stay in the United
States. It highlights the cultural turmoil faced by Tara when she refuses to accept Calcutta as her home
again. This study also attempts to portray how the novelist herself intimately projects her own self
through the novel. The Tiger s Daughter and wife are about two different problems of expatriates. The
Tiger s Daughter, Mukherjee s first novel, is about the cross cultural conflict ... Show more content on

The preamble of the term alienation by Karl Marx in the last decade of the 19th century has been
invigorated in the mid 20th century with the progression of migration. In the social sciences,
Assimilation is an approach towards incorporation and amalgamation, through which, not only
immigrants but also other marginalized groups African Americans in American, women in society,
schedule castes in India are wrapped up into an integrated conventional society.
The major and foremost concern of all postmodern writers has been the life of South Asian expatriates
and the dilemma of acculturation and assimilation. Acculturation is the depressing upshot of post
modern scenario, which which Tara Benarjee has failed to learn and it is the major thing which has
created the feelings of loneliness on her return to India. Cultural assimilation brings the mixture of

Definitions Of A Dictator Essay
Dictators have been around for centuries, terrorizing and oppressing civilians through manipulation,
genocide, and many other sadistic methods of force. Starting in Ancient Rome, the term dictator
originated from the Latin root word dictare in the late 14c. So, what is a dictator? The earliest
definition that can be found was one who has absolute power or authority . Other words that have been
used to describe dictators over the years is tyrant , despot , autocrat , and many more.
Everyone has seen dictators in the current news or historic documentaries such as Kim Jong un, Adolf
Hitler, Joseph Stalin, etc but perhaps were unaware of their dictator title. Many leaders have been
labelled dictators as they have absolute power that was either taken by force or through manipulation
or even just through blood. However, today we will be focusing on two dictators who worked their
ways up the political ladder to the position that they strived for. Qin Shi Huang and Than Shwe were
both tyrannic, selfish, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Qin Shi Huang was born on the eighteenth of February 259BC in Handan, China to King Zhuangxiang
of Qin and Queen Dowager Zhao. His father was the King of the Qin state at that time. His birth name
was Ying Zheng or Zhao Zheng whilst being prince of the Qin state. Qin Shi Huang was allegedly a
very aggressive leader but also very ambitious, at the very young age of just twenty two he assumed
full power by ridding himself of his premier, Lu Buwei, who acted as a regent while he was a minor .
(travelguide.com). It was Qins Shi s aspiration to unify and subjugate all seven states of china; Han,
Zhao, Wei, Chu, Yan, and Qi using the powerful economic and political military strength of the Qin
state. Qin Shi Huang s first ambition was to build the first feudal and centralised empire in Chinese
history and did so in 221BC. This is known as the Qin Dynasty which reigned from 221BC to

Inspector Calls
An Inspector s Calls is a play that was written by J.B. Priestley in 1945 but set in Edwardian England
1912. The play is set in a fictional industrial city in the North Midlands called Brumley. The fictional
industrial city of Brumley would have been typical of many towns, as in the town there would be
factory owners, who would provide much needed jobs, this meant that the factory owners were able to
run their businesses any way they wanted to. These factory owners were more important in 1912 than
they are now, as many industrialists got rich in the 1800s. For example, men like Arthur Birling may
have come from a modest background but his new wealth helped him climb up the social ladder,
gaining both a lot of power and respect. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first scene introduces the characters and gives a taste of their personality to the audience. Also the
play has an element of Whodunnit since Eva s Smiths story is slowly exposed due to the Inspector s
questioning.
Sheila is the daughter of Mr Arthur Birling and Mrs Sybil Birling; she is described by Priestley as a
pretty girl in her early twenties... pleased about life...excited. This makes the audience see Sheila as a
sweet lively young girl who appreciates life in her own bubble. The bubble makes her naive and
immature. We see Sheila being naive when she talks about the previous summer when Gerald
vanished. Gerald explains that he was awfully busy at work all the time , the audience see Sheila to be
youthful because she believes Gerald was really working during the whole summer. Sheila in the
beginning of the play says a little as she seems like a well mannered and not outspoken. Priestley
describes Sheila like an ordinary twenty year old girl, who is rather content with life, as Sheila is
excited about her engagement like any girl would be. She is also portrayed as spoilt and a girl who
gets her own way.
You ve got it... mummy isn t beautiful. This impression of Sheila is portrayed again and again later on
in the play. It also makes the audience feel jealous towards Sheila and not like her very much at the
start, later on it shows how dramatically Sheila changes from being spoilt to being more realistic

A wind farm supervisory control (WFSC) is developed to generate the active power reference to the
RSC and GSC. WTG controllers then regulate each DFIG wind turbine to generate the desired amount
of active power, where the deviations between the available wind energy input and desired active
power output are compensated by the ESS. Simulation is done in Matlab for the grid connected wind
farm, the wind farm consists of 15 DFIG wind turbines each with 4MW capacity at different and
constant wind speeds. A constant active power Pref is taken at 38MW which can be specified by the
grid operator and the wind farm has to supply this constant active power. Simulation results are
studied for the active power supplied by wind farm with and without Energy Storage System (ESS).
Here we can observe that with ESS the active power supplied by wind farm is almost constant.
2. Doubly Fed Induction Generator Systems For variable speed systems with limited variable speed
range, e.g. ±30% of synchronous speed, the DFIG can be an interesting solution. As mentioned earlier
the reason for this is that power electronic converter only has to handle a fraction (20 30%) of the total
power. This means that the losses in the power electronic converter can be reduced

The Impact of Ethics on the Enron Corporation
Ethics is something that is very important to have especially in the business world. Ethics is the
unwritten laws or rules defined by human nature; ethics is something people encounter as a child
learning the differences between right and wrong. In 2001, Enron was the fifth largest company on the
Fortune 500. Enron was also the market leader in energy production, distribution, and trading.
However, Enron s unethical accounting practices have left the company in joint chapter 11 bankruptcy.
This bankruptcy has caused many problems among many individuals. Enron s employees and retirees
are suffering because of the bankruptcy. Wall Street and investors have taken a major downturn do to

Obviously, investors were cheering as huge dividend checks arrived. CBS News caught several Enron
employees incriminating themselves on tape. (See
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/06/01/eveningnews/main620626.shtml) However, the scandal
brought the company crashing down into bankruptcy. The value of the stocks came plunging down,
which caused an overwhelming negative impact on the investors, many of whom lost a substantial
amount of money. The real problem is that most of the investors who lost money were actual
employees of the company. Most Enron employees were urged to buy company stock as part of their
401k plans. Within months, all the investments were gone. Certainly, the ethical actions (or lack there
of) caused a negative impact on the company s investors. The evidence presented shows how ethical
actions can either have a positive or negative impact (or in this case, both) on investors.
Retirees
The Enron scandal was another instance where unethical decisions have cost numerous people jobs,
money, and even stress related health problems. A few people cost thousands of retirees millions of
dollars in a matter of days. When Enron filed for protection from creditors on December 2, 2001,
20,000 employees were left without jobs and retirement. Only months before the crash, stock prices
were beginning to plunge. Enron barred the employees from selling their stock shares from retirement

Essay about Three Main Environments of Northanger Abbey
There are three main environments in which the novel, Northanger
Abbey, is set.
The initial location is Fullerton and it is from here Catherine begins her journey. This is also the place
to which Catherine returns at the end of the narrative. By the very fact that Fullerton is located at the
start and the end of Catherine s journey, it can be used as a comparison with the other locations in the
novel.
Catherine wants to leave Fullerton, as it is not exciting enough and certainly not as glamorous a place
as the second location, Bath.
Indeed, the Allens, who own the majority of the land in Fullerton, are happy to spend much of the year
socialising in Bath. Mrs Allen takes
Catherine to Bath because adventures do not befall a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On arriving in Bath, it is strange that although Bath is such a thriving town of social activity, she fails
to make new acquaintances or renew any old ones. It is here that Catherine meets Henry Tilney and
the Thorpe family.
Bath lacks the stability of Fullerton and it is this insincerity that enables Bath to be seen as a place
where it is easy to practise deceit. Bath is full of new acquaintances and thus easy to befriend and
utilise people to assist in any schemes and to fall back upon, if caught. It is here that Isabella deceives
the trusting Catherine for longer than would be possible in a close nit environment like
Fullerton.
In contrast to Isabella, Catherine s new friend, Henry Tilney, is aware of the falseness of Bath. He puts
up with the shallow entertainment in the hope he finds a worthy friend there, as happens on meeting
Catherine. Indeed, while dancing with Catherine, he convey his amusement that many visitors to Bath
come to dislike the place, but prolong their stay only to leave when money runs out, thus presenting a
damaging fascination with Bath. He thinks that Bath has
little variety and that Catherine should be tired of it at the end of six weeks .
Bath, although a real geographical location, is an artificial environment separate from reality. People
are preoccupied with fashion and dance rather than hard work. It is a place for the wealthy, those who
aspire

Are tall buildings necessary for London to remain a competitive world city?
On February 10, 2004 mayor of London Ken Livingstone introduced the London Plan, the first
proactive strategy in over thirty years to deal specifically with the planning and development of
London. Since an increase in London s population by 800,000 is expected by the year 2020 , the
mayor has suggested the construction of high rise buildings as the method most likely to enable
London to grow in a controlled and steady manner and maintain its status as a world city. A key part of
the plan, the mayor s proposal for high density towers throughout the city, has heightened the debate
between urban planners and heritage groups as to whether the construction of tall ... Show more

Paul s cathedral . Claims such as these have held together London s existing developmental plan, the
Views Policy, which is for the large part unorganized and reactive; the plan dictates where tall
buildings should not be placed rather than where they could best be placed, which has resulted in
London s fragmented and uneven skyline . Thus far, the plan has served these groups well and they
have effectively prevented the construction of tall buildings that could potentially obstruct views of
London landmarks.
In place of tall, high density towers, suggestions have been made by some heritage groups for the
construction of a greater number of smaller and more compact high density buildings. Even though
smaller buildings would help to preserve the views of London s major landmarks, they would not be
built in the best interest of the city. Since there is a lack of available land in the city and low rise, high
density complexes require more land than tall, high density towers, the only way to construct these
developments would be to expand outward. An outward expansion would not only be expensive,
requiring a development of infrastructure in those areas strong enough to support new businesses, but
almost entirely impractical due to London s poor transport system. Even though half a million London
workers live in the suburbs and depend on the radial rail system that links them to the center of the
city, the system as a whole is expensive, heavily congested and wasteful; it

Ministry Interview Report
Following and understanding the journeys of the ministers before us is significant in the light of our
own ministry. Each person should look up to a minister in their lives and understand their methods
along with their past and current positions. An interview is one of the best ways to discover these. The
person I interviewed has been my pastor and guide since I was born. He has pastored at Community
Baptist Church, the church I attend, my whole life. He has taught me most of the things I knew
concerning God previous to attending Barclay College. He baptized me when I decided to accept
Jesus as my savior at seventeen years old and helped keep me with Christ throughout the years. This
man s name is Richard Bishop, informally known as Pastor Rick. I inquired of him the answers to four
questions; How long have you been a pastor, and is Community Baptist Church the only one you ve
pastored? , What do you consider to be your philosophy in ministry? , What type of education did you
receive in order to become a pastor? , and, What is the story behind your call to worship? . ... Show

  • 2. The Pros And Cons Of Roe V. Wade In 1971 Jane Roe attempted to have an abortion, but was opposed by Henry Wade, the District Attorney of Dallas who was determined to enforce the Texas law that made abortion, unless medically necessary, illegal. The conflict only grew in strength and publicity until it landed at the Supreme Court in the now legendary case of Roe v. Wade. When the legal battle was over, women were granted the right to abortion in the second trimester, a right that continues to cause conflict 40 years later. The case ran from 1971 1973 and it got a heated debate started across the United States. The topic of abortion had always been debated heavily but Roe v. Wade sparked a wave of protests and new opinions. The argument over abortion prior to Roe v. Wade is similar to what it is today; there are those who support abortion (pro choice) and those who don t (pro life). Of course each has its exceptions to what is viewed as acceptable. Many supported abortion because women went to extremely dangerous lengths to terminate their pregnancies. ¨In 1965, illegal abortions made up one sixth of all pregnancy and childbirth related deaths¨, (Planned Parenthood; Roe v. Wade). Many religious leaders and figures were anti abortion because of their beliefs, ¨Doe v. Bolton [410 U.S. 179 (1973)] , the Supreme Court ruled that the unborn child is not a ¨person¨ at any time before birth...¨ (The Catholic Advance; A Non Person). The abortion laws prior to Roe v. Wade in Texas were, for the most part, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Teacher Tenure Essay Wisniewski 1 Bill Wisniewski ENG 1520 Dr. David James 6 August 2012 Teacher Tenure Today, there seems to be a push to change the policy of teacher tenure. Roughly 2.3 million public school teachers in the United States have tenure a perk reserved for the noblest of professions (professors and judges also enjoy such rights). (Stephey) Tenure refers to a policy which gives teachers a permanent contract that effectively ensuring them a guarantee of employment for life. Stephey continues to state, Though tenure doesn t guarantee lifetime employment, it does make firing teachers a difficult and costly process, one that involves the union, the school board, the principal, the judicial system and thousands of dollars in legal fees. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When one is a teacher they know that they need to teach the material that is needed for students succeed and excel during testing. Teachers should have no fear in being dismissed if they are doing the job that they were hired for. In the other hand, if one is not doing their job teaching then that is simply one owns fault when getting fired. There are many workers who work hard to get what they deserve such as high pay and benefits. Then why do are there laws which protects teacher s jobs only? In school districts across America there are stories as found in an article from Meghan Mathis as she writes, New York faced intense scrutiny and criticism in 2009 when it came to light it had been paying full salaries to nearly 700 tenured teachers who had been accused of poor performance or wrongdoing. These teachers were paid not to teach, but rather to sit in a guarded room from start to finish of each day. How is the government benefitting our society by using tax payer s dollars to pay for teachers to idly sit in a room when these dollars could be used to introduce new programs into the classroom or better yet a teacher willing to do the job? Why are tax payer s dollars wasted by spending this money on terminating teachers? Writing in Time, Stephey states that Some school districts have resorted to separation Wisniewski 4 ... • 4. Wasteful Gov t Spending on Education in 3rd Worlds National and international development is a human instinct and serves only one specific purpose; which is the advancement of humanity and specifically the betterment of the quality of life for everyone. The terminology development usually includes such areas as foreign aid, healthcare, equality, infrastructure, economics, human rights and education as well as many others. International development differs compared to national development; it was created by governments and institutions after World War Two in order to concentrate on topics like easing poverty and to improve living conditions in destroyed countries, but more importantly in former colonies which were now free and to become part of a different and hopefully better world. ... Furthermore, violations of human rights and famine have continued for decades or at least since the last colonial powers pulled out of a country and left them to themselves without ever thinking about the consequences of a power vacuum and leaving a particular nation without an economic structure or any sufficiently developed educational system. In World crisis in education: The view from the 1980 s , Philip H. Coombs looks back to the 50 s and 60 s and describes the unfortunate situation of TWN and how little has changed. The book might as well be called ......: The view from 2012 , and be published this year again without any or little change, and probably no one would notice that the book was written three decades earlier. According to Coombs, western style education was new to TWN and trying to carry out this system immediately after decolonization would bring instant and noticeable changes, with a few exceptions, these WIN s ideas of how to educate efficiently never took a foothold in the third world, rather seem to be nothing but a constant investment without noticeable results. Even now, countless NGO s and foreign government agencies pour large amounts of money and time into undeveloped states, and it gives the impression that very little is accomplished. What is astonishing is that already back in the 1960 s a large bubble of optimism has burst but since then attempts continue to blow up the same bubble ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Maya Deren Marina de Oliveira Ventura Beginning my personal analysis of At Land ,the waves mean that Maya is being dragged away from her own life. When she wakes up in the beach again, she has the opportunity of starting all over again, as the water represents a new start. As we see the waves in a reverse motion, they look like a carpet, as she was privileged to start again. As she climbs the rocks on the beach, the transition of the wild to the table means a transition in our own life: when we stop being children and get in the social world. But as we can see for her position, there s a moment in between the teenage years, when we re stuck in the middle of both scenarios. As she appears for the first time at the top of the table, we can see ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But unfortunately, that s not possible. As she accepts her role and keeps looking for the chess piece, we can see her walking with a man, what means she s completely dragged to the adult world. The moment she starts walking with the man, who changes 4 times, it represents the love life. When we enter the adult world, our main relation is with the opposite sex, and Maya symbolized this commitment as they were walking together through a road. When she gets in the house, it represents the end of the love relationship. The man lying in the bed is a representation of love. He still awake, and seems to be really attentive to Maya. That s what happens when we break up: although the relationship no longer exists, all the memories, and the representation that the two have about each other are still very vivid. The moment she comes back to the beach, climbing down the mountain, it s like she s returning to her origins, descending from her social role. It s her elderly years. At this time of life, it s like we came back to our childhood: no more role playing, no more social commitments, and no more strings. When she see the women playing chess, she understand that we only have fully control of who we are at the end of our journey, but then it doesn t really matter: they don t seem to be ecstatic to know how to play the game, they seem calm and peaceful. • 6. You Can Never Predict What Life Is Going At You You can never predict what life is going to throw at you. Until I was about 9 years old, I lived in Groves, Texas which was located by the Gulf of Mexico. Groves was a small town, so small that I had to go to school in Port Arthur, the city right next to Groves. I had a small house and a big backyard with lots of trees. My dad also kept a small ship and a boat in our yard, and I always thought about what it might be like to board the ship. My days would be spent playing with my little sister and hanging out in the yard, exploring every inch of our lawn. One hot September day, I was in my fourth grade class when kids were being checked out. My teacher explained to those of us still in class that a hurricane seemed to be heading our way. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Traffic was terrible. It was more than terrible, we would only move what felt like an inch at a time. People were running out of gas and there were no gas stations open for miles. My dad kept the air conditioning off to preserve the battery or gas, and it was blazing hot out. I remember being drenched in sweat, wondering where we were going to end up. When it came time for me to sleep, the car was so packed I had to move in awkward positions to get comfortable and use cardboard boxes as pillows. We could not afford to pull over for potty breaks so my parents had my sister and I pee in a jar. Gross right? But that was all we could do. There was a countdown to when the hurricane was coming and we had to get as far away as possible. Even though we traveled for days, we only got as far as Woodsville which was only about two hours from where I lived. A two hour trip had been stretched out to days because of the traffic. We were notified to find shelter and we ended up in a high school gym. We were given two cots since there were four family members and we huddled our way to the middle of the gym. There were a lot of people, all just as miserable looking as we were. I was so exhausted that I fell asleep on the cot about five minutes after arriving to our shelter. I slept so long and so deep, the hurricane passed over our shelter and I missed it. When I woke up my mom told me about how the hurricane passed and that we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Interval Training Versus Aerobic Exercise Analysis Interval training and continuous aerobic exercise are two of the most common cardio exercises practiced by athletes today. However, one is slightly better than the other when looking at performance increases. An easy way to measure performance increases is to examine the VO2 max of an individual before and after a training period. VO2 max is the measure of how much oxygen a body can take in from the air. It is a great reflection of physical fitness because it reflects how efficiently a person can use oxygen which is needed for most exercises, especially cardio. Interval training is when a person switches between two activities that vary in intensity or effort. Continuous aerobic exercise is when a person performs an activity at the same intensity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Anaerobic energy is energy that is produced in the absence of oxygen. On the other hand, aerobic energy is energy that is produced in the presence of oxygen. The difference in energy pathway may explain the difference in VO2 increases between interval training and continuous aerobic exercise. Many people struggle to incorporate cardio into their workout routine because they think they must run endless miles to see results. This excuse is invalid because interval training can provide just as many health benefits, if not more, than continuous aerobic exercise. Even though interval training has been shown to improve performance in many people, a blend of interval training and continuous aerobic exercise that is designed for an individual s goals is the best approach to implement cardio. Interval training results in greater performance increases and more motivation to exercise than continuous aerobic training in many types of people, including well trained athletes, diabetics, children, and people with Down syndrome. However, the most important thing is for people to incorporate cardio into their exercise ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. A Brief Note On The Alzheimer s Association Overall, people who take care of dementia patients must handle health care responsibilities of the person with dementia more often than caregivers of people who do not have dementia. Some of the common tasks outlined by the Alzheimer s Association include assisting with daily activities around the house, managing the medications, helping with activities of daily living such as getting dressed and bathing, and providing support for the person with dementia as the disease progresses. Dementia residents require significantly more assistance with activities of daily living and help around the house in comparison to other older adults (Alzheimer s Association, 2016). Due to the time consuming responsibilities and the increasing level of care required during this stage, this might be a time when informal caregivers outsource some the responsibility to formal caregivers and facilities equipped for the level of intensity required. Another task caregivers face as the dementia progresses in the person they are taking care of is communication. The Alzheimer s Association provides a pamphlet on the most prevalent behavior changes and recommendations on how the informal caregiver should handle such changes. Common changes in communication include a gradual loss of ability to find the right words and organize thoughts and emotions effectively, a decline in the amount of verbal communication used, and going back to one s first language (Alzheimer s Association, 2014b). • 10. Pakistan Is A Complex Country Pakistan is a complex country, both because of harsh physical terrain and because of a historical unpredictable government. Pakistan is constantly in the news, and a topic of discussion in The United States. Many of the fighters the American forces are fighting in Afghanistan come from Pakistan, or at least find a safe haven in the mountains of western Pakistan. In addition, Pakistan is a nuclear armed country that has a shaky government at best. I find it fascinating that a country that has a government with such a sporadic history filled with attempts to overthrow it and coups maintain a nuclear arsenal. How was this possible? I know that the United States and its allies put much effort into keeping countries such as Iran and North Korea from attaining nuclear weapons. What was going on during the development of Pakistan s nuclear program? While Pakistan is an ally of the United States, in the region that Pakistan is located that could change quickly. In addition, I feel that you must prove that you are a stable country and society before you are permitted to possess such powerful weapons. Pakistan provides a very interesting topic of discussion that some people may not be aware. The two reasons listed above are the main reason I chose to write about Pakistan, knowing little else about the country, but through my research, I found that there is more to Pakistan than just those two areas, beginning with how the country initially formed. The first scrolls were discovered in 1947 by a shepherd boy who wandered into a cave after a stray goat. The texts are believed to have been hidden in eleven caves for safe keeping prior to the destruction of Rome in A.D.70. The scrolls are a collection of biblical and non biblical documents comprising of the Hebrew Bible, (every book except Esther); the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha; rules for community life; biblical commentaries; a Testimonia, (a collection of verses from the Bible about the Messiah); a War Scroll; Temple Scroll; poetic and liturgical pieces; Thanksgiving Hymns; wisdom ... Their interpretation of the law was severe, they held fellowship meals to which admission was closely guarded. They interpreted prophetic scripture as referring to events of their own day and believed that they had an important part to play in the hope of Israel. 2 HOW MUCH CAN THEY HELP US UNDERSTAND THE NEW TESTAMENT? The dead sea scrolls offer unique information from a time during the second temple period when Jewish religious and political life in Palestine was full of corruption and conflict. There were three main Jewish groups during this time; the Pharisees, the Sadducees and the Essenes. It has also been confirmed that there were many other groups and movements in Secondary Temple Judaism. It is now evident that Judaism in the land of Israel was open to Greek influences from the 3rd century onwards in the areas of language, economics, military strategy, politics, culture and religion .3 The scrolls shed light on the time when Jesus and John the Baptist lived and the beliefs of the early Christians. • 13. What Is Malcolm X s View Of Religion The opinions that many people have about religion derive from their association with churches, mosques, and other places of worship. However, Malcolm X defied the usual curve of religious doctrine and embraced what he felt was right for him and those who shared his views. In his autobiography, Malcolm X abandoned atheism to become a follower of the Nation of Islam (NOI) and later, he ended up following Eastern Islam. In the Autobiography of Malcolm X, Malcolm s views and his idealism is derived from his practice of Islam and his will to fight for the rights of African Americans also come from the same base. The theme of religion is introduced in the autobiography during Malcolm s time in the state prison of Massachusetts. While in prison, he started to study books in a small library. Later in 1948, Malcolm was moved to Norfolk Prison. There was little violence in this prison and inmates could debate and study freely. While in prison, Malcolm studied many books such as religion, history, literature, linguistics, and biology. Malcolm first heard about the Nation of Islam from his home when Reginald, his brother requested him to do so, and this became his first step into full conversion to Islam. An indicator is going to have a reaction with hydroxide ions or hydrogen ions to determine whether the substance is a base or acid. The role of an indicator in a titration is to determine how many oxygen or hydroxide ions are in a solution. The laboratory method that is used to titrate an unknown strong acid solution is a titration. When you drop NaOH ions the OH ions unite with H ions creating water which leave less H ions in the solution making the solution less acidic. The more NaOH ions you add the solution will eventually change color due to the indicator. The data that should be collected during the titration in order to calculate the concentration of HCl should be the number of moles, the volume of the solution, and the amount dropped to make the solution less acidic. • 15. Alfred Stevens La Parisienne Japonisme Essay Alfred Stevens La Parisienne Japonaise is a painting of oil on canvas painted in 1872. This artwork I have chosen is a clear example of Japonisme from its time. The artist s work of Japonisme blossomed after the Japanese western trade agreement at the Paris World Fair of 1855. The influence of Japanese goods and art in the western world embarked a strong blend of culture in art. Prints, as well as other decorative materials, became exotic goods in the west. The culture of what is painted and the medium of the painting display interculturalism. The Kimono robe gave a sense of intimacy within the subjects. Hybrid art follows the contemporary art movement from centuries ago. The term refers to the combination, or blend, of two different forms of art. This could mean the blurring of cultural, artistic, and traditional boundaries. The development of these combinations creates new artistic concepts and documentation of cultural influences. Those of the west may have underrated the simplicity of Japanese art. The adoption of western style painting gave those of the east the chance to prove they can be just as talented. Wisdom, Impression, Sentiment by Chi Kan Jo is an example of Japanese adoption of western techniques. The painting is from 1899 and made by oil on canvas. This medium defers from those of traditional Japanese such as ink and print, opening new opportunities. Nudity was not an ideal for Japanese art at the time, however it was so in the west. This piece shows three nude females in their mere neutrality. The similar to the piece by Alfred Stevens, the golden, planar background attests to that of a Japanese folding screen. Typically appearing around the age of twelve months, pretend play is initially central to the self, before expanding to include peers and objects [CITE]. As well as being an effective way to keep children entertained, prominent psychologist Lev Vygotsky believed pretend play to be a complex process which fosters the development of vital cognitive operations such as self regulation (impulse control, self direction, planning, and appropriate social behaviour) and symbolic thought (assigning an alternative meaning to something), known together ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Social speech is the first to occur, typically around the age of two, and involves external communication between the child and another person [CITE]. At approximately three years of age, children begin to guide, plan and reflect on their behaviour by talking to themselves out loud, a process known as private speech [GILLINGHAM BERK]. The developmental benefits of private speech are significant due to its ability to assist in overcoming obstacles, by allowing the child to verbally plan and organise their behaviour before and during they carry out an action [CITE]. Additionally, research has found that private speech often occurs concurrently with pretend play. In a study performed by Krafft and Berk [CITE], a positive correlation was observed between children that engaged in pretend play and observations of private speech. Another study (observational) also found a positive correlation when comparing the rates of private speech between a traditional preschool which encouraged pretend play, and a Montessori preschool which actively discouraged pretend play. In sum, private speech is more likely to occur during pretend play. According to Vygotsky, self regulating thought (a component of executive function) is the internalisation of private speech, also referred to as inner speech [CITE]. As the final form of speech, inner speech serves the same self regulating function as private speech, however, it is inaudible [CITE]. Whilst a concrete explanation of the function of private speech during pretend play has yet to be agreed upon, it has been hypothesised that private speech is beneficial as it allows the child to distance themselves from the activity, thus permitting top down control over particular impulses [CARLSON BECK). In other words, by verbally calculating their options, children are able to see the bigger picture undistracted by their impulses, allowing them to weigh up the behavioural ... • 34. Protein Synthesis And The Proteins Protein synthesis starts when the mRNA binds to a small ribosomal subunit and the first codon (AUG) is positioned correctly for the initiation of protein synthesis. The AUG codon then base pairs with the anticodon of tRNA carrying methionine. This methionine eventually becomes the first Amino Acid in the polypeptide chain. Now a large ribosomal subunit binds to the complex and the reaction of protein synthesis itself can begin. (Fig. 3) A ribosome has two sites where tRNA can bind. As a result, of the events outlined above, the initiation codon, AUG, on the mRNA molecule is positioned at the first of these sites on the ribosome, the peptidyl (P) site. The mRNA codon for the second Amino Acid is lined up with the second site, the aminoacyl (A) site. From this point, the polypeptide chain elongates by a cycle of three steps: The first step is the binding of the next tRNA to an anticodon complementary to the next mRNA codon. The amino Acid carried by this trNA will be the next amino acid in the polypeptide chain. The second step is the peptidyl transferase reaction, which results in the peptide bond formation. The peptidyl transferase enzyme, which catalyses the reaction, is an integral part of the large ribosomal unit. This enzyme attaches the first Amino Acid to the second one by a peptide bond, so that the first tRNA is now empty and the second is holding both amino acids. The third step in the cycle moves the ribosome along mRNA. This brings the next codon to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Variation Of Life Expectancy Introduction One interesting question in mind is, How long can I live? Knowing how long one can live, or at least have an idea about it may change people s way of living. People nowadays have grown more conscious of their health, the environment their living in and their lifestyle. According to Max Roser, life expectancy has increased rapidly since the Enlightenment. In a pre modern poor world, life expectancy was around 30 years in all regions of the world. In the early century, life expectancy started to increase in the early industrialized countries while it stayed low in the rest of the world. Over the last decades, global inequality of life expectancy has decreased. Since 1900, the global average life expectancy has more than doubled, and is now approaching 70 years. Life expectancy refers to the number of years a person is expected to live base on the statistical average. It differs by geographical area, and depends on several variables such as gender, lifestyle, access to healthcare, economic growth rate, environment, etc. The concept of life expectancy has been used in different fields such as plant or animal ecology, and actuarial science. This project aims to determine the factors that could mostly explain the variation of life expectancy per country through regression analysis. The explanatory variables considered are real GDP growth rate, health care index, pollution index, traffic index, literacy rate and gender. The response variable is the actual ... I think the idea of success is affected by the social system. In America and Hong Kong, which are capitalistic societies affected by the American Dream, success means money and fame. In other societies, success might have different meanings. Some people said money and fame is the true meaning of success, but I think that the true meaning of success is to follow the interest of your own and being good at it, but not money and fame. According to the bible, in the book of Kings, Elijah was not only a devoted prophet of God, but he also served as a worker who lived in the northern kingdom of Israel, under King Ahab s reign. Elijah is remembered for his remarkable faith and devotion to God. In writing this essay, I will tell the story of one the many adventures that occurred in Elijah s lifetime. Of course, there are so many alterations and rewritten versions of the bible, that I have no idea what to believe. No one truly knows what happened, for everyone who could have, died long ago. Either way, all the different versions of the story seem to have the same basic outcome. In telling you this, I will try to incorporate the information that is mentioned throughout the book, The Old Testament Story, Ninth Edition (by John H. Tullock and Mark McEntire) and some of what I have been taught myself over my twenty eight years of life. It all began when King Ahab, and his deceitful wife Jezebel demanded for their kingdom to worship the false God of Baal. As a result, they ordered all the prophets of the Lord to be put to death. Elijah was the only one to survive this horrible purge and went to confront King Ahab. He told the King that a three year drought would be brought upon Israel. This was to challenge the people s false prophet, Baal and eventually teach them a very valuable lesson in whose God was real. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since an increase in London s population by 800,000 is expected by the year 2020 , the mayor has suggested the construction of high rise buildings as the method most likely to enable London to grow in a controlled and steady manner and maintain its status as a world city. Claims such as these have held together London s existing developmental plan, the Views Policy, which is for the large part unorganized and reactive; the plan dictates where tall buildings should not be placed rather than where they could best be placed, which has resulted in London s fragmented and uneven skyline . Thus far, the plan has served these groups well and they have effectively prevented the construction of tall buildings that could potentially obstruct views of London landmarks. In place of tall, high density towers, suggestions have been made by some heritage groups for the construction of a greater number of smaller and more compact high density buildings. Even though smaller buildings would help to preserve the views of London s major landmarks, they would not be built in the best interest of the city. Since there is a lack of available land in the city and low rise, high density complexes require more land than tall, high density towers, the only way to construct these developments would be to expand outward. An outward expansion would not only be expensive, requiring a development of infrastructure in those areas strong enough to support new businesses, but almost entirely impractical due to London s poor transport system.
