The Problem Of The Resistant Parent
The Resistant Parent
Most parents struggle with their child having a mental health illness. Many parents struggle with
understanding the disorder, identifying ways to alter the family dynamic while managing his or her
stress. In most cases, the parents are resistant to needing to make changes in their home. There are
many factors to address with dealing with a resistant parent. It is my objective to cover some of those
issues in this post.
Parents are an important factor in the treatment of a child or adolescent. It is important to empower
them through psychoeducation. Most clients are resistant due to lack of knowledge and being marked
with negative stigma of being crazy . The negative stigma for a parent is being marked as a bad parent
due to their child having a mental health illness
It is safe to say that many parents do not believe their children will experience a mental health illness.
Most believes it is a lack of discipline for younger children. Unfortunately, many parents will compare
their childhood, raising to their parenting. This is a different generation and violent times. Sometimes,
parents will have needed to be reminded of the different factors affecting the generation of children. In
most cases, the parenting style we grew up experiencing may not always be effective in parenting this
generation of children. This information needs to be conveyed in a positive manner.
HELPING PARENTS IN THERAPY
Parents are in need of therapy as well. Whether they

Family Farming as Opposed to the Industrial Side of...
The federal government should support the family farms of today rather than the industrial side of
agriculture.
In 1930 there was around seven million farms in the United States, now there is about two million.
Advocates for farming and agriculture are worried about losing farms and farmland (source E). The
total number of farms has fallen dramatically since the 1930s, but the number of larger farms has
grown. Today small farms make up 92 percent of all U.S. farms and the other eight percent are large
and very large family farms and nonfamily farms (source L). Even with the loss of many farms and
farmers, the number of acres of farmland remains constant. The size of farms has increased, but not all
farms are the same size (source E). The technology of today has made it possible to farm more land
with fewer producers (source A). There is 915 million acres in farmland in the United States and the
average farm size is 434 acres. In Kansas there are around 65,500 farms with 707 acres in average.
Eighty eight percent of the Kansas is under agricultural production (source L). The official definition
of a farm according to the United States Department of Agriculture is any place from which $1000 or
more of agricultural products were produced and sold or normally would have been sold during the
census year (source L). Gross cash income, according to the USDA, is one of the best ways to
determine farm size; farms that have grown quickly and have sales of $250,000 or more are

Hinduism Vs Buddhism Research Paper
So for this assignment I chose Buddhism and Hinduism. Two very unfamiliar religions I have no idea
about but have heard about all my life. I ve always seen the Buddha figurines and other various items
of him and if you rub the tummy it gives you good luck or something like that, but never really knew
much about the religion itself.
After a profound spiritual realization, the Buddha gathered many followers. He organized them into a
community that fundamentally reshaped religious, social, and political structures. Hinduism is a
perpetually evolving collection of an astounding array of philosophical, ritual, and devotional
traditions. There is no founder, and there is no fixed moment of origin. Hindus often refer to their
religion as sanatana ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The tradition itself maintains that it is a timeless religion that has always existed. Historians generally
hold that the origins of what we call Hinduism can be traced to the ancient Indus Valley civilization.
This would mean that the religion is over 4,000 years old, although it is a dynamic religious tradition
that has continued to develop and evolve.
The Buddhist texts were not recorded in writing until centuries after the Buddha s death. The earliest
Buddhist texts have preserved the Buddha s teachings in a form that reflects their oral transmission,
with many repetitions, standardized phrases, and poetic rhythms. This structure and the lack of
philosophical cohesiveness within these early texts suggest that they were intended not simply to
convey the Buddha s teachings, but also to serve as religious recitations.
The textual tradition of Hinduism encompasses an almost incomprehensible collection of oral and
written scriptures that include myths, rituals, philosophical speculation, devotional poems and songs,
local histories, and so on. There are two basic categories of religious texts within this vast collection,
Shruti (revealed) and Smrti (remembered). Shruti generally refers to the Vedas, the Brahmanas, and
the Upanishads; some Hindus also classify the Bhagavad Gita as shruti. Smrti typically refers to

Urbanization And Happiness In Charles Montgomery s Happy...
URBANISATION AND HAPPINESS
Ketki Kulkarni, M.C.R.P.
HAPPY CITY, by Charles Montgomery
Publication: FSR, New York (2013), 356 pages
Book Review, Fall 2017 Urban Economic Spatial patterns
The spaces we live in have the power to make or mar our sense of happiness, and staying true to its
subtitle, Transforming our Lives through Urban Design is exactly what Charles Montgomery has
attempted to convey through his book Happy City. Unlike most books on urbanization, Happy City
comes across as a truly enjoyable read. It starts with the cheery, inspirational story of Enrique
Peñalosa, the former mayor of Bogota, which sets the tone for the rest of the book. ... Show more

Because there is no end to this outlook, it also fills people with a sense of discontentment making for
an unhappy society. Not to mention the ill effects on the environment and even human health. To put
emphasis on his point, Montgomery notes that had all these materialistic riches had the ability to make
us happy, then more than half of America would have comprised of happy and satisfied individuals.
However, we know that is not the case. People are increasingly stressed, frustrated and full of
discontent. He cites resources that mention suicide rates being aggravated with almost one in every ten
American being on an anti depressant pill.
It is therefore, not how we design our cities or even what techniques we might use to create the most
awe inspiring marvels of architecture and engineering that would decide how content we feel about
the cities. The crux lies in designing our urban spaces and infrastructure such that it encourages and
allows for social interaction, provides with a connect to nature and helps in the overall growth of the
community.
The solution according to Montgomery lies in strengthening our Public Transit Systems. A family of
four, would often have four cars, none of which are being used to their full potential. Governmental
plans include expanding highways, constructing flyovers and widening roads to accommodate more
and more traffic, but as

Essay on The Initiation of Sarty into Manhood in Barn...
The central theme in William Faulkner s Barn Burning is initiation and morality. Young Colonel
Sartoris Sarty Snopes is confronted with the conflict between loyalty to his family and to honor and
justice. Emphasis on family loyalty becomes apparent immediately at the opening of the story, when
Sarty is already feeling the old fierce pull of blood (400). In front of a Justice of the Peace in a
makeshift courtroom, Sarty is already aware that everyone in the court room is not only his father s
enemy, but his own as well: . ..our enemy he thought in that despair; ourn! Mine and hisn both! He s
my father! (400) Sarty s father Abner is constantly reminding him of his responsibilities as part of a
family and of the importance of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He has a chat with Sarty about family loyalty, further complicating Sarty s initiation into manhood.
Sarty notes that if I had said they wanted only truth, justice, he would have hit me again. (402 403)
Once the family arrives at the new farm, the grand mansion owned by Major de Spain located there
immediately evokes two different reactions from Sarty and Abner. To Abner, who chose neither side in
the Civil War and now resents his position in life and every force that seems to oppose him, the
mansion is yet another representation of his enemy which seems to be almost everything. To Sarty, the
mansion looks like a courthouse and represents justice. When Abner lashes out at the mansion itself,
ruining an expensive rug on purpose, de Spain makes Abner pay for it. Sarty changes sides again, this
time against the mansion and on the side of his father he won t git no twenty bushels! He won t git
none! (407) While furious on the outside, Sarty still hopes in the inside that the punishment will make
his father . ..stop forever and always from being what he used to be. (407) Abner takes de Spain to
court over the excessive injustice of 20 bushels. Before Sarty knows that his father is the plaintiff in
this case rather than the defendant, he begins to blurt out He ain t done it! He ain t burnt... in his father

Essay on The Cause of the Economic Boom in the 1920 s
The Cause of the Economic Boom in the 1920 s
By the end of the First World War America was regarded as the most powerful and richest country in
the world. In the 1920´s the United States economy was booming. This was a period of prosperity,
when the country s economy was doing well and some of the people were sharing in it. A long term
cause of the American boom in the 1920´s was America s natural advantage and regional diversity.
The South was mainly used for farming but also had large amounts of oil. The North of America and
the East Coast were the richest parts of America because there was lots of industry, business and many
new factories were being built providing new jobs. This large area of ... Show more content on

America was only able to do all these things as the country was rich and full of resources. America did
not suffer any damages in the war (apart from loss of military lives) whereas it s business rivals such
as Britain suffered hugely. There was a huge rise in production at this time. There were many
important short term causes as well as the obvious long term cause and turning point that contributed
to the boom. One short term reason for the boom was the policy of the Republican Party. From 1920
to 1932 all the US presidents were Republican. Republicans believed that the government should
interfere as little as possible in the everyday lives of the people. When the Republicans came to power
they introduced tariffs, this made it expensive to buy foreign goods. The tariffs protected US
businesses from competition. The Republicans kept taxation as low because of this everybody had
more money and they would buy American goods (because they were cheaper) or invest it in the
American economy. The Republican attitude was to interfere as little as possible in business and let
people handle it the way they saw fit, the result of this was a richer and happier America for about
60% of the people.
Another short term reason for the boom was the emergence of new industries in America. Americans
loved new products such as the automobile, by 1929 millions of people owned cars. A

Gatsby Essay- the Pursued, Pursuing Busy and Tired
There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy and the tired To what extent does this sum up the
novel?
In The Great Gatsby , Fitzgerald made all his characters with four predominate behaviours; the
pursued, the pursuing, the busy, and the tired . Some may fall under only one of these groups, where
as the others may belong in all of them. This is not only a good summary of the novel but also of
people s life in general during the 1920s. Throughout the novel, there are characters who are being
chased after, and also individuals who has established that they are in pursuit, whether it is of wealth,
love, a person or an ideal such as the American Dream . However it is the pursuers that endure the
most, as for the most part they are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, those are extreme cases and will not likely to occur, therefore it is mostly the pursuers that
are eventful and exhausted. This is best represented by George, who spent his whole life in an effort to
achieve success, however in the end was unable to do so. As result he is only left with a run down
garage and living an exhausted life. When Myrtle, the love of George s life and probably the last thing
holding him together was killed, George was left with nothing despair. For this George was
determined to pursue for the avenge his wife and Gatsby became pursued for revenge. In the due
course, George kills Gatsby and ends his own life as well. Moreover, even Tom who was achieve
almost everything he desired, was eventually tired of his life, and decided to chase after Myrtle which
made him busy once again. Thus, the pursued may be troubled at times, but for the most part it is the
pursuing that suffers.
In contrast to other characters, Nick seemed exempt from being either pursued or pursuing. Being the
narrator of the novel, Nick is very voyeuristic and passive. Therefore instead of being caught up in
everyone else s business, he was very analytical, which provided him with experience for good
decision making. Therefore Nick wasn t an exhausted, nor a very busy man, however it is evident that
he still sought after bits

Exploration Of The New World
Exploration of the New World (Americas) became very popular around the 1500 s and beyond. The
Spanish were the first of the Old World to find the New World and colonize, and they did so on an
Island known as Hispaniola. Of course, this inspired other countries in Europe to do the same, leading
up to the English explorers who colonized in Jamestown. Surprisingly, even though these two colonies
were settled a little over 100 years apart from each other, they have many similarities and differences.
Firstly, both the Spanish and English explorers main goal were to get rich quick, which also tied in to
how their economies worked. The way they did this, however, was different. The Spanish traded many
resources with the Indians, and in return ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, on terms of resources, the Spanish had much more than the English. The English mooched
off of the Indians because their ways of collectivism (when all the colonists worked and received the
same amount of resources) weren t working according to plan. Not every colonist worked as hard as
the other, or even worked, and would still receive the same amount of food. This led to many
arguments. Also, they didn t have many resources of water since they were only by the ocean, which
was saltwater, and they found this made you very sick. This all changed under the rule of Governor Sir
Thomas Dale. Everyone got their own land under Governor Dale, and were forced to grow their own
food if they wanted to survive. This is when John Rolfe had created a new strain of tobacco that could
flourish on Virginia s land, eventually making some of the English settlers of the New World rich.
Characteristics between the settlers in both colonies were different. The Spanish explorers settlers
were all males who wanted to explore, get rich, and work hard to get rich they didn t let anything stop
them in doing so, even if it meant being violent. The English explorers, however, were already
members of the upper class, so of course they wanted to get rich but they did not want to work hard at
it, so

America s Beer And Alcoholic Beverages
Americans love their beer and alcoholic beverages. Alcohol tax was even a catalyst in creating this
country by encouraging early Americans to fight for independence. Beer has been a common thread in
our society for the past 200 years that brings people together to socialize. As our country modernized
in the late 1800 s, breweries were constructed in every part of the United States. And of those
breweries, three survived prohibition and raced to take their claim on the country s market share. Our
country was carved up by three large beer companies; Miller was popular in the North, Budweiser was
popular in the South, and Coors was the choice in the Midwest and West. Adolph Coors was an
American success story and the company he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the 1940 s, the brewery introduced their line of premium beer calling it Banquet Coors , or as we
know that brand today as Coors. Coors became the beer for many famous actors and politicians, which
gave that brand prestige. The company took advantage of that prestige and centered their marketing
campaign on average Joes drinking the preferred beer of presidents and actors. I will argue later in this
analysis on how the brewery s loyalty to this premium brand of beer decreased market share in the
1980 s.
In the 1960 s, Coors profited by being one of the first beer companies to market their aluminum cans.
This was very important for Coors because of their production process. They were the only large beer
company that didn t pasteurize their beer. This required them to get innovative with their delivery
process. The beer industry was very saturated with competitors and Coors found their cash cow with
their Banquet brand. However, in order to provide that unique taste their product was required to age
longer and because they skipped the pasteurization process their product had to be shipped cold.
I argue that if not for the innovative process of aluminum cans, Coors would not have enjoyed the
success they did in 1960 s and early 1970 s. This was the peak of their innovative culture in the
company. Their opportunities then were how to decrease carrying and delivery costs due to their
unique brewing process and market a

Comparing Pros and Cons of S Corporations and LLC s
Comparing pros and cons of S corporations and LLC s
When people want to form a new business ventures, they usually can house their operation under one
of several basic entity types. These entities differ in terms of their legal and tax consideration and each
has advantages and disadvantages from both tax and nontax prospective. Therefore, it is important to
know what type of entity is the best option before opening a new business and it is really depends on
the goals, outlook and strategy for that particular business and its owners.
Generally, for tax purpose business entities can be classified as either separate taxpaying entities or as
flow through entities. Separate taxpaying entities pay taxes on their own income, in other words,
corporation is taxpayer. In contrast, flow through entities are legal entities where income passes to
owners; that is, the income of the entities is treated as the income of the owners. It includes many
major types of corporation such as S corporations, LLC (Limited Liability Companies), Partnership
and Sole Proprietorship. Its major difference from C corporations is that a flow through entity is not
taxed at entity level; rather, the income generated by the organization is taxed directly to the owners.
Therefore, Flow through entities are a common device used to limit taxation by avoiding double
taxation.
Among these flow through entities, I am going to compare and contrast S corporations and LLCs in
different aspects. In order to make

The Great Old Ones
When you chose to represent each of your albums on individual novellas from one of the most
renowned horror authors in the world, there can hardly be a short supply of thematic inspiration.
Numerous bands have created concept albums based around their own ideas, or pen songs that take
insight from creative writing, but few bands will dedicate the entire span of an album to an existing
piece of literature.
H.P. Lovecraft is the lifeblood of France s ambient black metal quintet, The Great Old Ones. His
grotesque imagery in his vivid fictional recounting goes hand in hand with the bleak grandeur that The
Great Old Ones conjures, which simultaneously takes their audience on a journey through the band s
expansive soundscapes and Lovecraft s tangible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
EOD: A Tale of Dark Legacy is very much a continuation of the band s past two albums, only with
increased theatrics and wild execution. The guitars are solely focused on creating a grandiose
atmosphere but predominantly rely on walls of sound and swerving rhythms; the halfway point of The
Ritual inducing a heavy Emperor influence. The technique may sound one dimensional but it s what
imagery is being portrayed by the guitars that command your attention, not how it is portrayed.
Finally, a special mention has to go to Léo Isnard s pummelling drumming, which is nothing short of
breathtaking throughout this accursed plot.
The Great Old Ones have once again breathed further life into the fictional world of H.P Lovecraft as
well as mastering their chosen aesthetic of atmospheric black metal. Moreover, their narration of The
Shadow over Innsmouth vividly assures everyone, just like the novel once did, that humanity is
doomed and the Esoteric Order of Dagon will be restored to its inescapable

Essay about Customer Life Time Value Model for Syphone
Question 1 What is the lifetime value of a typical customer in each of the four segments, in current
dollar values? Compare these figures to the Gross margin figures in the original spreadsheet. What can
you learn from this comparison?
Solution 1
Following are the lifetime value of a typical customer in each of the four segments, in current dollar
values.
Segments / Segment description Customer lifetime value Gross margins
Large accounts $78,454 $63,000
Large accounts, rebate $70,769 $36,000
Small accounts $10,679 $10,800

and relative terms? In terms of customer value, what is the consequence of focusing on the short term?
Solution 3
The changes in absolute terms and relative terms are shown in the table below. Segments / Segment
description Gross margins Customer lifetime value at 35%
Customer lifetime value at 10% Relative Reduction in Customer lifetime Value
Large accounts $63,000 $56,291 $78,454 28%
Large accounts, rebate $36,000 $44,878 $70,769 37%
Small accounts $10,800 $8,033 $10,679 25%
Small accounts, rebate $7,200 $7,413 $10,919 32%
Lost customers $0 $0 $0 0%
Customer Life Time Value is higher than the gross margins for the customers that get rebate and the
customers without rebate have Customer Life Time Value which is less than the gross margins. So
what it means is that in short term the margins of the customers who don t get rebate are high and they
are more profitable to the company but in longer term these accounts make losses since the churn rate
for such accounts is quite high in the lower nineties.
This illustration provides the importance of customer loyalty and maintaining least churning of
customers.

whether that customer is offered a rebate. What do you learn from the updated spreadsheet? Explain

The Graveyard Book Essay
The Graveyard book, written by Neil Gaiman is a stupendously well crafted book detailing the life of
Nobody Owens, or Bod, a boy whose family has been ruthlessly slaughtered. Bod crawls to the
graveyard next to his house, where the inhabitant ghosts take him in and adopt him, where he lives
until Bod decides that he wants to live with his own kind: the living. While it is true that all books
open up worlds of literature, no book does it better than the Graveyard book of leaving you with an
utterly unforgettable experience you will never find in any other book. The Graveyard book
accomplishes this task thorough it s exhilarating, hard to put down nature, it s age appropriate writing
style, it s inspirational plotline, and lastly, it s extremely creative ideas and various concepts found
throughout the book.
A book, no matter what kind of book, always has an age range. In this case, the Graveyard book s age
range is completely open to all ages, especially our age range. While The Graveyard Book will
entertain people of all ages, it s especially a tale for children, says NYtimes book reviewer Monica

Graveyard book is derived from another book, Gaiman still manages to be at his absolute best,
creating something original from a derived plotline. The Jungle Book has many characters, problems,
resolutions, all adding up to an excellent story, but the Graveyard Book takes it to a whole new level,

An 46 Year Old Male With Chest Pain
Scholarly Assignment on an 46 year old male with chest pain Chest pains is one of the most common
reasons for presentation to the emergency department (Czarnecki, Wang, Tu, Lee, Schull, Lau,
Farkouh, Wijeysundera, Ko, 2014, p. 289). It can be cause by various conditions, including mild to
chronic diseases or illnesses, viruses, strokes or heart attacks. Subjective A middle aged, 46 year old
male patient is complaining of chest pain, upon being brought to the urgent clinic. He recalls that he
was in his backyard laying down new large, heavy stones for his new backyard patio. He works at a
sedentary office job, and lives a sedentary lifestyle. The patient also complains of shortness of breath
and indigestion, as he did not intake as much food that is need for an average male. He also suffers
from asthma and GERD. Reviewing this data, the nurse can get more subjective data from the patient
if they would to ask specific questions to obtain a complete health history like, when did the pain
start? Does it hurt more if you touch it? Does this type of pain usually occur? How often does the pain
occur? Where exactly on your chest does the pain occur? Is the pain superficial or deep? Does the pain
feel like it is dull, sharp, or throbbing? On a scale of one to ten how would you rate your pain? What
were you doing at the time the pain started? You say you have not eaten much today, but can you

Twenty three years later, the agreement signing that took place on the front lawn of the White House
that had plans to change the ways between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) is
now looked at as one of the worst actions that was a part of the Israeli Palestinian conflict. This
agreement is known as the Oslo Accords or Peace Process . Just like several other peace acts in the
world, the United States played a significant but limited role in making the Oslo Peace Accords
happen. Although the agreement had high potential to work, the amount of lying, accusing, trust
issues, corruption, and terror for the citizens of losing their homes caused this series of agreements to
fail. Between 1993 and 1998, the series of agreements ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Israel repeatedly refused to withdraw its troops at a rate and to the extent contemplated under the

or to stem incitement to violence against Israel. Neither side could agree on anything because there

Camp David failed, but it is clear that despite additional concessions by Barak, the Israelis and
Palestinians remained strongly at odds over borders, Jerusalem, and whether Israel would recognize
Palestinian refugees right of return. The summit ended without a settlement; Clinton would blame

New Evidence Of Herihor s Northern Political Expansion As...
New evidence of Herihor`s Northern political Expansion as a king
Ahmed A. Faraman
Abstract
The relevant paper presents a detailed study of a remarkable scene belonging to Herihor as a king. The
scene is situated on the eastern inner wall of the court of the temple of Khonsu at Karnak. The scene,
with a preliminary iconography characterization and translation of the accompanying texts, has been
published previously. But still offers possibilities for additional analysis. The contents offer a great
variety of novel queries; among which one concerns Herihor`s relationship with Hathor of Dendera,
based on the iconographic detail representing the king receiving his regal epithets incised inside
cartouches. The study examines the relationship between the king and goddess, and includes a
discussion of the titles in the Hb sed symbol surmounted by the crown of Upper Egypt. The present
study, throughout the significance of the symbolism expressed by the scene, arrives at the conclusions
of a clear geographical boundary; that Herihor, as a king, exerted control at least as far north as the
region of Iwnt (Dendera). Introduction
The rise of Herihor as a King is an expected result of precedent introductions. Towards the end of the
Twentieth Dynasty, specifically during the reign of Ramses XI, royal authority was faded and forced
to definitely bow before the increasing influence and power of the ambitious high priests of Amon in
Thebes. This was inevitable consequence resulting

Sealed Air Corporation (HBS 9-582-103) case analysis
1. What are the problems?
Market leadership and technological innovation have marked Sealed Air s participation in the U.S.
protective packaging market. Several small regional producers have introduced products, which are
less effective than Sealed Air s but similar in appearance and cheaper. The company must determine
its response to this new competition. The company is faced with a difficult choice of choosing from a
range of feasible options ranging from doing nothing to introducing a new product. This has raised
product line management issues, particularly cannibalization, and affords the opportunity for the
development of a marketing plan for any new product introduction. The timing of launch and any

The other option of reducing price or distributor s margin (to match GAFCEL s offering) may have a
detrimental impact on the bottom line.

Air Cap $43.50 $65.35

It should launch uncoated products matching SO 22 (3/16in) and LO 22 (1/2in) offerings of GAFCEL.
It should further launch a product in the 5/16in category so that it attacks its competitors from all

Distributor Truck Load 30.5 32.5 35

Invisible Man Essay
The narrator in Invisible Man has the opportunity to take on numerous roles in this novel due to his
invisibility. The narrator comes in contact with 3 main characters that greatly shape his life and make
him the invisible man that he is. The white men from the ballroom, Dr. Herbert Bledsoe from the
college, and the narrator s grandfather all have a huge impact on the narrator s life. In his novel,
Invisible Man, Ralph Ellison uses the main characters to affect the narrator s invisibility. The highly
ranked white people from the hotel ballroom affected the narrator s invisibility by humiliation,
embarrassment, and publicly degrading him. They ridiculed him while he gave a speech that took
much time and effort on his part, and belittled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The entertainment not only came from the black men fighting over coins, but little did the blacks
know, the rug was electrified. The narrator tells us I lunged for a yellow coin lying on the blue design
of the carpet, touching it and sending a surprised shriek to join the rising around me. I tried to
frantically to remove my hand but could not let go. A hot, violent force tore though my body, shaking
me like wet rat. The rug was electrified. (27). The white men make the narrator feel inferior to them
by making him the course of their entertainment. They make him feel ashamed and worthless. His
feeling of invisibility not only comes from the belittling remarks they make, and what he has to do,
but also the thought that the whites have that much control over what he is doing. Dr. A. Herbert
Bledsoe is the president at the state college for Negroes, that the narrator attends. Dr. Bledsoe is very
selfish and ambitious. He shows his confidence through his posture and through everything he does.
He is very conceited and has to take notice in not only himself, but his work. The narrator explains As

bland mask, leaving only the sparkle of his eyes to betray the emotion that I had seen only a moment
before. He looked steadily at himself for a moment... (102). He is only concerned with the authority he

The Contribution Of David Hunter Hubel
Introduction In 1981, D.H Hubel and T.N Wiesel were awarded half of the Nobel prize in Physiology
or Medicine, along with R.W. Sperry who received the other half. The two had been conducting
experiments and publishing their findings together for over twenty years, before they were awarded
the Nobel prize for their discoveries concerning information processing in the visual system. They
produced many reports including single and complex cells, and ocular dominance. Their work
provided better understanding of the visual system and therefore led the way for others to develop
knowledge and treatment of eye conditions. Their discovery also helped other scientists to conduct
and publish work of their own.

Their experiments took place on anaesthetized cats with microelectrodes inserted into their primary
visual cortex, their eyes were also held open allowing the experiment to be conducted. Small spots of
light were shone onto the restricted retinal regions which often would cause brisk responses and could
be divided into excitatory and inhibitory regions (shown in fig.1). Excitatory areas if illuminated
produced an increased frequency of firing compared to inhibitory regions, although both did produce
responses. Stationary spots showed that the excitatory and inhibitory regions were aligned side by side
within the central responsive area, flanked by antagonistic areas. Light stimulus covering the whole
receptive field was practically ineffective in most units due to mutual antagonism between excitatory
and inhibitory regions, shown in figure 1 (f).
A vertical slit of light was projected, which only covered the excitatory areas and avoided all
inhibitory areas, however when turned horizontally, it touched inhibitory areas and responses were
dramatically reduced or lost completely. This was due to the stimulation of excitatory areas being
smaller than the antagonistic areas that were stimulated and thus responses shielded. The excitatory
and inhibitory areas had similar shape and positioning and responded in the same way to directional
movement (Hubel and Wiesel, 1959).

Direct Fire Assets Helped Impacted The Battle Of Okinawa
Having in direct fire assets helped impacted the battle of Okinawa enormously. There were dilemmas,
troubles, and endeavors. This battle lead to the progression of our artillery. It educated the military
showing it is difficult to shoot, move, and communicate effectively when moving with the fast pace of
a battle. Throughout the 82 day battle they used marine air, artillery, mortars, and naval gunfire.
Artillery provided fires delaying, disrupting, and destroying the enemy proving who the true king of

Okinawa was part of the plan to win the Far East war. The island of Okinawa is a part of a group of
islands at the southern end of Japan. The main focus for the Americans were four airfields that were
on the island that they wanted to control. The forces that made up the American landing party were the
III Amphibious Corps and XXIV Corps, making the Tenth U.S. Army under the command of
Lieutenant General Simon Bolivar Buckner Jr. American forces had not been able to gather very much
intelligence about the island which made it difficult to determine how many enemy forces there were.
There were over 130,000 Japanese troops waiting on the island. There were over 450,000 civilians
which made operations harder for American forces. The enemy forces where mainly down in the

While Every Culture, Race, Community, And Family Have Their
While every culture, race, community, and family have their own definition of normalcy, there are
undisputable aspects that every being needs to pursue a successful lifestyle. With modernizing
industrialization, came a more noticeable discrepancy on what these aspects should be. In Charles
Dickens s 1854 novel, Hard Times, he explores these varying viewpoints while quite obviously taking
a stand for one perspective. Throughout the novel, one can clearly see that there are two different
models for raising a child. These models are through the guidance of Sleary s circus members and Mr.
Gradgrind. Sleary s circus has a very humanized approach to raising a child. Unlike Mr. Gradgrind.

Sissy seemed to be the only one who knew that Louisa felt no form of love towards Mr. Bounderby.
She felt extremely sympathetic for Louisa, mourning the loss of freedom that she never truly had. At
this moment, Louisa could not bring herself to look at Sissy. She felt coldness and pride that
prohibited her from having any real feelings. Sissy was able to experience life in completely different
way that Louisa was not.
Sissy Jupe was also able to experience the wonder of imagination and exploration that other children
like the Gradgrinds were not. Children brought up by the Gradgrind system had their creativity stifled.
They lived their lives by fact and reason and were heavily discouraged from letting their minds
wonder. This mental suffocation was far different from what Sissy was taught. Because Sissy grew up
in a performing arts environment, she was exposed to the importance of creativity and imagination.
She was free to stray from the confines of fact and reason, and it was even encouraged. Those who
supported Grandgrind s system were infuriated by her failure to comply with their social normalcy. It
seemed that anytime Sissy would answer a question in M Choakumchild s classroom, she would be
incorrect because her answers were not in the figures at all (43). While this public humiliation

Sarcophagus In Anthropology
Throughout history, archaeology has been a tool used to learn more about past human activities and
their cultures by analyzing artifacts, architecture, environment data, and etc. that has been left behind.
Many artifacts and monuments became instrumental in expanding the knowledge of the past and the
Hagia Triada Sarcophagus is no exception. By analyzing the physical details such as size/dimensions,
material, style, images depicted, and the location of the artifact, this can help people determine the
reason and purpose of its existence. Eventually this can lead to how it may change or add to the
knowledge of the classical world. Looking at an artifact s physical attributes is always the first step to

However, while much of the images contain styles of Minoan art, there are some details that are

characteristics of the griffin with a bird head, leonine body, and notched wings are present but it is

Rousseau s The Social Contract
Our world has many components both physical and nonphysical that make it what it is, we have
certain powerful ideas like religion, which are very important and give us faith and some ethics and
other essential ideas, but religion itself isn t followed by everyone and in fact there are several
religions that don t connect at all. Unlike religion, laws and those who enforce them are universally
followed and for the most part, respected. We have rules and laws for huge crimes like murder or
terrorism and once those crimes are committed, these who commit them are often punished fairly but
on the contrary we have small punishments for breaking little and irrelevant rules. In The Social

Italy s Political And Economic On Going Crisis
Question 1 Italy will be hosting a Renzi fied constitutional referendum this upcoming 4th of
December and expect their voters to decide whether they approve of altering the constitution to
restructure the legislative process by effectively reducing the upper chamber s power.
Constitutional reform, with an exact motive to deprive the Senate of power, has been a desired goal
since WW2. Italy s political and economic on going crisis has incentivized the Parliament to
implement new enactments and thus far none of these laws have been effectively executed because of
the legislatures intracameral conflict. Italy s method of navette has failed to resolve policy differences
within the legislature with a never ending shuttle back and forth and thus has held the country captive
in an ungovernable state. Ergo, Renzi believes the right path in his plan to stabilize the government is
to change Italy s 56 year old constitution.
Italy s parliament is structured under a symmetrical bicameral legislature with two chambers:
Chamber of Deputies(hereafter referred to as lower house) and the Senate of the Republic(upper
house). In order for a bill to be implemented, both houses have to approve the bill similarly, therefore
without the confidence of both houses, attempts at implementing laws will continuously fail. Italy s
bicameral system is placed in the upper left of the two dimensional chart because of the Senate s
position as a frail political actor, therefore marking its system as

gaps in his arguments and counter arguments in this topic. My argument is important because I will

In Conard s article, he demonstrates to answer the question whether or not we need more humanities.
His answer is that we should be focus on technology and innovation to have a better living standards.

(43) Schools give one the time and materials to achieve all what one desire in life. (43) In the same

This paper also supports the self fashioning article by Keohane. Self fashioning builds the character,
personality, and focus on the student. A self fashioned student is more likely to succeed in life in
whichever line of specialization he chooses. Likewise, I disagree with Conard on the point that
innovation and technology are more likely to bring success to the student. From experience, people
who know their personality and character are able to use in their skills, time and education to be the

failure are not a factor of chosen line of specialization rather, it is a factor of hard work and
determination to create a change. Self fashioning is more fundamental and basic education, like
authority, and intelligence and it is determined by how people deal with small and basic things in life.
Things like cleaning, washing, and taking care of oneself are more important that education when it

In my life, the most common basic things derive from self fashioning. They include taking care of

Harold Bloom Classic
The reason English classes always take the interest of individuals is the way we are able to analyze,
discuss, and believe what a piece of literature is about. The subject individuals do not take into
thought is the reason why we are reading these specific works of literature. There is no way to read
everything because Who reads must choose, since there is literally not enough time to read everything,
even if one does nothing but read (Bloom 15). The most common reason is we, as a society, have
deemed specific works greater than others, even adding the label of a classic on to them to show
exactly that. But what deems a work of literature to be a classic? The answer to this question is really
relative to the individual. For someone that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this case, we are going to apply Bloom s standards to Art Spiegelman s graphic novel, Maus. The
first step is to figure out what the message Maus is trying to convey to the reader. In this story about a
Jew couple trying to find a safe place to live, we can assume it is trying to bring attention to the
injustice and hardships Jews had to go through while Hitler was in power. This message brings on a
significant expectation to shed light on the life of runaway Jews, which is then achieved by showing
the different ways Vladek tried to fit in with Nazis to provide for his wife, Anja. An example of this is
when Vladek was passing a group of kids who then yelled out JEW! making the kids mothers come
out. Vladek plays it smart by saying kids are always afraid and when a mother says Sorry mister. You
know how kids are... Heil Hitler he has no choice but to stick his hand out right back (Spiegelman

against them is something not to be taken lightly. After fulfilling expectations, In the second standard

Sally Ride: A Name to Remember When growing up, a lot of kids say they want to be an astronaut
when they are older. This was not the case for Sally Ride. She claimed that she did not want to be an
astronaut and knew that there were little to no women in that profession. Then one day, the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) sent out flyers looking for women to become apart of
the program and that changed Sally Ride s life forever. NASA mainly recruited white males who were
in the military to work for them. It was not until the Equal Employment Opportunity Act was passed
that in a way forced NASA to consider women for some of their jobs. NASA then created a new job
for astronauts which was to help the pilot on space flights (Friedman). Sally Ride was a very good
student in high school and decided to go to Stanford University for college. At Stanford, she got her
bachelor s degree in physics which she then narrowed it down to X ray astronomy and free electron
laser research. Towards the end of her schooling at Stanford, Ride came across an article in the school
newspaper talking about how NASA was in search for scientist to become specialists on one of their

The Glass Ceiling And Gender Analysis
The Glass Ceiling is the title given to an invisible barrier that is meant to limit women from
succeeding in top level jobs. They only judge based on their gender and do not take into account
women s education, experience, or job related skills. Some argue that the only people who have put a
limit to how far women can succeed in their career, are women themselves, but the Glass Ceiling and
gender discrimination in the workforce does exist and is a major problem that needs to be addressed.
Topics such as equal pay, discrimination, harassment, and misconceptions all play a part in the

Even so, the percentage of women who decided to join the work force increased from 43 60%. In fact
because of the Great Recession in 2008 2009 impacted the male dominated industries the most, but it
helped the acceleration towards gender equality (Conley, Dalton, 2013). Now there are approximately
the same amount of women and men working in the labor force. Actually for a brief time, women
even exceeded men due to this economic crisis. Even though the US passed title VII of the 1964 civil
rights act, which declared it unlawful for employers to discriminate on the basis of a person s race,
nationality, creed, or sex , women faced harder predicaments that they had to push through. Women
have to deal with hard situations like harassment, a legal form of discrimination , with things like dirty
jokes, and sexual haggle, where they are threatened to provide sexual favors or in turn would receive
punishment (Conley, Dalton, 2013). Even nearly 40 years after the Equal Pay Act (1963) was passed,
discrepancy between women and men flourish in the working world. There was a study performed by
the general accounting office in 2003 which found that women earned 79.7% of what men were
earning. As such, if we were to compare this finding to the findings in 1983 when women earned
80.3% we can clearly see that this wage gap is in no way diminishing (Alkadry, M.G., Tower, L.E., 1).
There have been attempts to rectify and fight the unequal pay based on gender inequality through
legislation, regulation, and litigation (Alkadry, M.G., Tower, L.E., 1). The Equal Pay Act was based
off of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the process of rectification
depends greatly on trying to enforce these two lawsuits. Unfortunately despite many years of equal

beautiful, loving goddess. Homer has said that she was the child of Zeus and Dione born in Illiad. In
Illiad she was a weak creature that no mortal was in fear of. Hesoid says Aphrodite rose from foam in
the sea where Kronois had cut off Uranus genitals. This sea birth was near Cythera and she later went

In the myth Psyche, Psyche was a Greek goddess who many people payed attention to. But when more
people began to pay attention to Psyche Aphrodite got very jealous. So Aphrodite got one of her sons
Eros, also known as Cupid, to go and strike her with her arrow to make her fall in love with an ugly
mean creature. When Eros laid eyes on her he immediately fell in love and sent her to a castle in a
land far away. Psyche thought he was and evil monster because he kept his identity hidden from
Psyche until one night when she saw his face. She was going to kill him and try and escape but when
she turned on the light she saw his true identity and instantly fell in love. In fear Eros flew off and
Psyche began searching for him everywhere. She went everywhere until she decided to ask Aphrodite
for help. Although Aphrodite gave her very hard tasks to complete, such as having to go far into the
sea and almost everywhere, before she found him she realized something. Aphrodite realized that her
son s happiness shouldn t be controlled by her needs(Colombian Encyclopedia). She should let him be
happy even if she doesn t like who it s with. The moral lesson Aphrodite influenced today s society
with was if a person loves somebody they should let them be happy, even if it impacts their life.
Somebody s happiness shouldn t affect another persons. Aphrodite influenced today s society but

The Av Is An Accident Caused By An Av
There are a number of parties that could inherently be liable for an accident caused by an AV, the
potential parties include; the user, the owner of the AV, the manufacturer of the AV, the manufacturer
of the AV components or AV technology, the AV code programmer, a government entity responsible
for the intelligent highway or perhaps even the AV itself by allowing AVs to be considered as legal
persons. There have also been arguments that the federal government should create legislation
preempting state tort remedies for AVs. Yet, due to the advanced equipment inside AVs, it will be
difficult to differentiate technological malfunctions from AV technology with those of driver
negligence at the outset of mass AV use. In the foreseeable future when there will likely be no human
driver this will not be an issue. Instead, the difficult part will be determining which manufacturer out
of the many involved in the creation of the AV is at fault. Present day procedures for identifying who
is at fault may not be satisfactory when the accident involves an AV. However, there is a potential
solution to identifying which vehicle or driver is at fault for an accident in the form of black boxes (
Flight Data Recorders ), similar to the ones used on airplanes. Black boxes would monitor driver
activity and record data leading up to accidents. This would create a privacy concern, but the
collection of relevant information would tell investigators the story of the cars operations and

Similarities Between 30s And 70s
Of all the decades in the history of the United States, few experienced comparable growth to that of
the 1920s and 1990s. I believe these two decades, while 70 years apart, display similarities in terms of
economic growth, and subsequent downturn. While there can be no real obvious similarities between
entire decades, economic similarities are apparent but not identical in timeline or structure, and can be
found by looking at the behavior of each period s respective stock markets and that of their
consumers. Over the next few pages I intend to discuss some of the key highlights of these decades
and compare their economic and political similarities. The main similarities between the 20s and 90s
can be found by looking at the behavior of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Radio, radio stations and shows exposed people to similar programming for the first time in history
and were in the homes of over 12 million Americans by the end of the decade. Simpler household life
allowed women to explore a world outside of the kitchen, leading to the beginning of the increase of
their role in society ( The Roaring Twenties ).
More importantly however, the economic boom of the 20s is in large part a result of the invention of
the automobile. Because of their affordability, by the end of the decade there was one car per every
five Americans ( The Roaring Twenties ). The automobile changed the flow of goods and people,
taking them places they ve never been before. With the introduction of vehicles, roads were being
paved to connect point A to B, opening up a whole new world of possibilities. Goods and people
reached places in time once thought laughable, spurring expansion. The birth of Jazz could even be
credited to the automobile. African Americans migrated north for the first time with many settling in
Harlem, the creative hotbed from which Jazz emerged. In general more Americans, for the first time in
history, lived in cities than farms ( The Roaring Twenties ). In addition to the practical implications of
the automobile, the technical implications may have

Reactions And Reactions Of Redox Reactions
Introduction:
Without the millions of chemical reactions that occur every day, life would be completely different.
An important class of common reactions includes those which involve the simultaneous transfer of
electrons between chemicals, commonly referred to as redox reactions or oxidation reduction
reactions. Redox reactions are whole reactions composed of two different half reactions known as
oxidation (where electrons are lost) and reduction (where electrons are gained) (Chemguide, 2013).
When there is an increase in the oxidation state, the reaction is oxidation; when there is a decrease, it
is reduction. Oxidation cannot possibly occur without an affiliated reduction, and vice versa. Redox
reactions are notated as such:
Cu(s)  Cu2+ + 2e
In the half reaction above, a copper ion (with a plus 2 charge) is formed from the oxidation of solid
copper (with no charge). The e in the equation is an electron which is free to reduce other chemical
atoms, such as in the half reaction:
2Ag+(aq) + 2e  2Ag(s)
Two electrons are added to the two silver ions in this half reaction, in order to produce a solid silver.
These two half reactions can be combined to form a redox equation as follows:
Cu(s)  Cu2+(aq) + 2e
2 Ag+(aq) + 2e  2Ag(s)
Cu(s) + 2Ag+(aq) + 2e  Cu2+(aq) + 2Ag(s) + 2e
OR
Cu(s) + 2Ag+(aq)  Cu2+(aq) + 2Ag(s)

Analysis Of The Book I Am A Mighty Watch Dog
I am a mighty watch dog, Erich announced on these days and puffed out his chest. You women rest
and I will keep my eyes out for anything dangerous that comes close. He always believed he needed to
protect us. Mama smiled at her beloved son, but I could see her eyes. It was then I knew she wouldn t
depend on him. As we traveled there were several villages, but we children were never allowed to
approach them. Mama told us, I will go into that town to see if I can ask for some food. I will go too,
Erich insisted. No, my precious, you stay here and guard our family. You are the watch dog,
remember? It was terrifying for me when Mama left us, even though Irmgard was there. What if my
mother didn t come back? What if the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We are dirty and tired. The cottage was small but there were beds with woolen blankets. It felt good to
be indoors after all this time and I pretended that we had reached our forever home. As Irmgard moved
silently through the cabin, she cried out, Look, look at the canned goods. There is so much food here
for us. She smoothed her hands over the bounty, cradling a tin of meat, as if it were a newborn kitten.
Meat had been something we hadn t had in months and the cupboard had dozens of canned varieties
along with fruits and vegetables. We all danced around the small room, holding hands and giggling. I
could not remember when I d seen Mama laugh like that; all the worry drained from her face and she
stood taller, too. In my childhood mind it was obvious: Mama thought we were going to die in the
forest and now with food, we could survive until we arrived at my aunt s home. As dusk settled, we
dared not light a candle for fear someone would discover us, but with our bellies full, it didn t matter
as we snuggled under the rough wool blankets and relaxed on the beds. On the last night, we heard a
noise. Quiet, Mama whispered and we were all suddenly awake and fearful. I hear someone walking
on sticks, Erich said in a tiny voice. The sticks are cracking under his weight. What will happen if
someone finds that we ve broken into the house? Irmgard murmured, but even I knew the

Ken Carter Essay
A good coaching style and personality are the foundation behind a successful coach. In the movie
Coach Carter do Ken Carter accept a new challenge, to become the new head coach for an awful
basketball team, that s having tremendous problems with dreadful results, criminality and bullying.
Carter changes the team, their structure and the player s way of being, which ends up making them a
successful team. But what is the secret about his great success? And which coaching strategies do he
use to make the team successful?
Just from the start Ken Carter showed how great his personality really is. Right when he stepped into
the basketball arena, he was faced with resistance from the players. Especially after he introduced the
new basketball contract. The special thing about his personality is, that he was able to overcome these
challenges and that he kept fighting for a better future for the rest of the team.
Ken Carter treats everyone the same. When his son joined the team and was late for training, he got
the same punishment as the rest of the team. Moreover, he s not creating a big power distance between
him and the team. His showing his position as the guy with the power over the team when it s
necessary, but his keeping that to a minimum. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Already at the first training, Ken Carter gave all players a contract that they had to sign if they would
like to play basketball on his team. This contract was nothing like a normal basketball contract,
because he gave them academically requirements they had to pass if they would like to play on his
team. In this way, Ken Carter motivates them by making them work hard for their goals, which will
motivate them to work even harder for their basketball dreams. He s setting clear expectations and
making them stand up for what they believe in, which is a huge motivational

  • 2. The Problem Of The Resistant Parent The Resistant Parent Most parents struggle with their child having a mental health illness. Many parents struggle with understanding the disorder, identifying ways to alter the family dynamic while managing his or her stress. In most cases, the parents are resistant to needing to make changes in their home. There are many factors to address with dealing with a resistant parent. It is my objective to cover some of those issues in this post. Parents are an important factor in the treatment of a child or adolescent. It is important to empower them through psychoeducation. Most clients are resistant due to lack of knowledge and being marked with negative stigma of being crazy . The negative stigma for a parent is being marked as a bad parent due to their child having a mental health illness It is safe to say that many parents do not believe their children will experience a mental health illness. Most believes it is a lack of discipline for younger children. Unfortunately, many parents will compare their childhood, raising to their parenting. This is a different generation and violent times. Sometimes, parents will have needed to be reminded of the different factors affecting the generation of children. In most cases, the parenting style we grew up experiencing may not always be effective in parenting this generation of children. This information needs to be conveyed in a positive manner. HELPING PARENTS IN THERAPY Parents are in need of therapy as well. Whether they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Family Farming as Opposed to the Industrial Side of... The federal government should support the family farms of today rather than the industrial side of agriculture. In 1930 there was around seven million farms in the United States, now there is about two million. Advocates for farming and agriculture are worried about losing farms and farmland (source E). The total number of farms has fallen dramatically since the 1930s, but the number of larger farms has grown. Today small farms make up 92 percent of all U.S. farms and the other eight percent are large and very large family farms and nonfamily farms (source L). Even with the loss of many farms and farmers, the number of acres of farmland remains constant. The size of farms has increased, but not all farms are the same size (source E). The technology of today has made it possible to farm more land with fewer producers (source A). There is 915 million acres in farmland in the United States and the average farm size is 434 acres. In Kansas there are around 65,500 farms with 707 acres in average. Eighty eight percent of the Kansas is under agricultural production (source L). The official definition of a farm according to the United States Department of Agriculture is any place from which $1000 or more of agricultural products were produced and sold or normally would have been sold during the census year (source L). Gross cash income, according to the USDA, is one of the best ways to determine farm size; farms that have grown quickly and have sales of $250,000 or more are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Hinduism Vs Buddhism Research Paper So for this assignment I chose Buddhism and Hinduism. Two very unfamiliar religions I have no idea about but have heard about all my life. I ve always seen the Buddha figurines and other various items of him and if you rub the tummy it gives you good luck or something like that, but never really knew much about the religion itself. After a profound spiritual realization, the Buddha gathered many followers. He organized them into a community that fundamentally reshaped religious, social, and political structures. Hinduism is a perpetually evolving collection of an astounding array of philosophical, ritual, and devotional traditions. There is no founder, and there is no fixed moment of origin. Hindus often refer to their religion as sanatana ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The tradition itself maintains that it is a timeless religion that has always existed. Historians generally hold that the origins of what we call Hinduism can be traced to the ancient Indus Valley civilization. This would mean that the religion is over 4,000 years old, although it is a dynamic religious tradition that has continued to develop and evolve. The Buddhist texts were not recorded in writing until centuries after the Buddha s death. The earliest Buddhist texts have preserved the Buddha s teachings in a form that reflects their oral transmission, with many repetitions, standardized phrases, and poetic rhythms. This structure and the lack of philosophical cohesiveness within these early texts suggest that they were intended not simply to convey the Buddha s teachings, but also to serve as religious recitations. The textual tradition of Hinduism encompasses an almost incomprehensible collection of oral and written scriptures that include myths, rituals, philosophical speculation, devotional poems and songs, local histories, and so on. There are two basic categories of religious texts within this vast collection, Shruti (revealed) and Smrti (remembered). Shruti generally refers to the Vedas, the Brahmanas, and the Upanishads; some Hindus also classify the Bhagavad Gita as shruti. Smrti typically refers to everything ... HAPPY CITY, by Charles Montgomery Publication: FSR, New York (2013), 356 pages Book Review, Fall 2017 Urban Economic Spatial patterns The spaces we live in have the power to make or mar our sense of happiness, and staying true to its subtitle, Transforming our Lives through Urban Design is exactly what Charles Montgomery has attempted to convey through his book Happy City. Unlike most books on urbanization, Happy City comes across as a truly enjoyable read. It starts with the cheery, inspirational story of Enrique Peñalosa, the former mayor of Bogota, which sets the tone for the rest of the book. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because there is no end to this outlook, it also fills people with a sense of discontentment making for an unhappy society. Not to mention the ill effects on the environment and even human health. To put emphasis on his point, Montgomery notes that had all these materialistic riches had the ability to make us happy, then more than half of America would have comprised of happy and satisfied individuals. However, we know that is not the case. People are increasingly stressed, frustrated and full of discontent. He cites resources that mention suicide rates being aggravated with almost one in every ten American being on an anti depressant pill. It is therefore, not how we design our cities or even what techniques we might use to create the most awe inspiring marvels of architecture and engineering that would decide how content we feel about the cities. The crux lies in designing our urban spaces and infrastructure such that it encourages and allows for social interaction, provides with a connect to nature and helps in the overall growth of the community. The solution according to Montgomery lies in strengthening our Public Transit Systems. A family of four, would often have four cars, none of which are being used to their full potential. Governmental plans include expanding highways, constructing flyovers and widening roads to accommodate more and more traffic, but as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Essay on The Initiation of Sarty into Manhood in Barn... The central theme in William Faulkner s Barn Burning is initiation and morality. Young Colonel Sartoris Sarty Snopes is confronted with the conflict between loyalty to his family and to honor and justice. Emphasis on family loyalty becomes apparent immediately at the opening of the story, when Sarty is already feeling the old fierce pull of blood (400). In front of a Justice of the Peace in a makeshift courtroom, Sarty is already aware that everyone in the court room is not only his father s enemy, but his own as well: . ..our enemy he thought in that despair; ourn! Sarty notes that if I had said they wanted only truth, justice, he would have hit me again. To Abner, who chose neither side in the Civil War and now resents his position in life and every force that seems to oppose him, the mansion is yet another representation of his enemy which seems to be almost everything. To Sarty, the mansion looks like a courthouse and represents justice. When Abner lashes out at the mansion itself, ruining an expensive rug on purpose, de Spain makes Abner pay for it. Sarty changes sides again, this time against the mansion and on the side of his father he won t git no twenty bushels! He won t git none! • 8. Essay on The Cause of the Economic Boom in the 1920 s The Cause of the Economic Boom in the 1920 s By the end of the First World War America was regarded as the most powerful and richest country in the world. In the 1920´s the United States economy was booming. This was a period of prosperity, when the country s economy was doing well and some of the people were sharing in it. A long term cause of the American boom in the 1920´s was America s natural advantage and regional diversity. The South was mainly used for farming but also had large amounts of oil. The North of America and the East Coast were the richest parts of America because there was lots of industry, business and many new factories were being built providing new jobs. This large area of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... America was only able to do all these things as the country was rich and full of resources. America did not suffer any damages in the war (apart from loss of military lives) whereas it s business rivals such as Britain suffered hugely. There was a huge rise in production at this time. There were many important short term causes as well as the obvious long term cause and turning point that contributed to the boom. One short term reason for the boom was the policy of the Republican Party. From 1920 to 1932 all the US presidents were Republican. Republicans believed that the government should interfere as little as possible in the everyday lives of the people. When the Republicans came to power they introduced tariffs, this made it expensive to buy foreign goods. The tariffs protected US businesses from competition. The Republicans kept taxation as low because of this everybody had more money and they would buy American goods (because they were cheaper) or invest it in the American economy. The Republican attitude was to interfere as little as possible in business and let people handle it the way they saw fit, the result of this was a richer and happier America for about 60% of the people. Another short term reason for the boom was the emergence of new industries in America. Americans loved new products such as the automobile, by 1929 millions of people owned cars. A ... • 9. Gatsby Essay- the Pursued, Pursuing Busy and Tired There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy and the tired To what extent does this sum up the novel? In The Great Gatsby , Fitzgerald made all his characters with four predominate behaviours; the pursued, the pursuing, the busy, and the tired . Some may fall under only one of these groups, where as the others may belong in all of them. This is not only a good summary of the novel but also of people s life in general during the 1920s. Throughout the novel, there are characters who are being chased after, and also individuals who has established that they are in pursuit, whether it is of wealth, love, a person or an ideal such as the American Dream . However, those are extreme cases and will not likely to occur, therefore it is mostly the pursuers that are eventful and exhausted. This is best represented by George, who spent his whole life in an effort to achieve success, however in the end was unable to do so. As result he is only left with a run down garage and living an exhausted life. When Myrtle, the love of George s life and probably the last thing holding him together was killed, George was left with nothing despair. For this George was determined to pursue for the avenge his wife and Gatsby became pursued for revenge. In the due course, George kills Gatsby and ends his own life as well. Moreover, even Tom who was achieve almost everything he desired, was eventually tired of his life, and decided to chase after Myrtle which made him busy once again. Thus, the pursued may be troubled at times, but for the most part it is the pursuing that suffers. In contrast to other characters, Nick seemed exempt from being either pursued or pursuing. Being the narrator of the novel, Nick is very voyeuristic and passive. Therefore instead of being caught up in everyone else s business, he was very analytical, which provided him with experience for good decision making. • 10. Exploration Of The New World Exploration of the New World (Americas) became very popular around the 1500 s and beyond. The Spanish were the first of the Old World to find the New World and colonize, and they did so on an Island known as Hispaniola. Of course, this inspired other countries in Europe to do the same, leading up to the English explorers who colonized in Jamestown. Surprisingly, even though these two colonies were settled a little over 100 years apart from each other, they have many similarities and differences. Firstly, both the Spanish and English explorers main goal were to get rich quick, which also tied in to how their economies worked. The way they did this, however, was different. The Spanish traded many resources with the Indians, and in return ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, on terms of resources, the Spanish had much more than the English. The English mooched off of the Indians because their ways of collectivism (when all the colonists worked and received the same amount of resources) weren t working according to plan. Not every colonist worked as hard as the other, or even worked, and would still receive the same amount of food. This led to many arguments. Also, they didn t have many resources of water since they were only by the ocean, which was saltwater, and they found this made you very sick. This all changed under the rule of Governor Sir Thomas Dale. Everyone got their own land under Governor Dale, and were forced to grow their own food if they wanted to survive. This is when John Rolfe had created a new strain of tobacco that could flourish on Virginia s land, eventually making some of the English settlers of the New World rich. Characteristics between the settlers in both colonies were different. The Spanish explorers settlers were all males who wanted to explore, get rich, and work hard to get rich they didn t let anything stop them in doing so, even if it meant being violent. • 11. America s Beer And Alcoholic Beverages Americans love their beer and alcoholic beverages. Alcohol tax was even a catalyst in creating this country by encouraging early Americans to fight for independence. Beer has been a common thread in our society for the past 200 years that brings people together to socialize. As our country modernized in the late 1800 s, breweries were constructed in every part of the United States. And of those breweries, three survived prohibition and raced to take their claim on the country s market share. Our country was carved up by three large beer companies; Miller was popular in the North, Budweiser was popular in the South, and Coors was the choice in the Midwest and West. Adolph Coors was an American success story and the company he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the 1940 s, the brewery introduced their line of premium beer calling it Banquet Coors , or as we know that brand today as Coors. Coors became the beer for many famous actors and politicians, which gave that brand prestige. The company took advantage of that prestige and centered their marketing campaign on average Joes drinking the preferred beer of presidents and actors. I will argue later in this analysis on how the brewery s loyalty to this premium brand of beer decreased market share in the 1980 s. In the 1960 s, Coors profited by being one of the first beer companies to market their aluminum cans. This was very important for Coors because of their production process. They were the only large beer company that didn t pasteurize their beer. This required them to get innovative with their delivery process. The beer industry was very saturated with competitors and Coors found their cash cow with their Banquet brand. However, in order to provide that unique taste their product was required to age longer and because they skipped the pasteurization process their product had to be shipped cold. I argue that if not for the innovative process of aluminum cans, Coors would not have enjoyed the success they did in 1960 s and early 1970 s. This was the peak of their innovative culture in the company. Their opportunities then were how to decrease carrying and delivery costs due to their unique brewing process and market a ... • 12. Comparing Pros and Cons of S Corporations and LLC s Comparing pros and cons of S corporations and LLC s When people want to form a new business ventures, they usually can house their operation under one of several basic entity types. These entities differ in terms of their legal and tax consideration and each has advantages and disadvantages from both tax and nontax prospective. Therefore, it is important to know what type of entity is the best option before opening a new business and it is really depends on the goals, outlook and strategy for that particular business and its owners. Generally, for tax purpose business entities can be classified as either separate taxpaying entities or as flow through entities. Separate taxpaying entities pay taxes on their own income, in other words, corporation is taxpayer. In contrast, flow through entities are legal entities where income passes to owners; that is, the income of the entities is treated as the income of the owners. It includes many major types of corporation such as S corporations, LLC (Limited Liability Companies), Partnership and Sole Proprietorship. Its major difference from C corporations is that a flow through entity is not taxed at entity level; rather, the income generated by the organization is taxed directly to the owners. Therefore, Flow through entities are a common device used to limit taxation by avoiding double taxation. Among these flow through entities, I am going to compare and contrast S corporations and LLCs in different aspects. In order to make ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. The Great Old Ones When you chose to represent each of your albums on individual novellas from one of the most renowned horror authors in the world, there can hardly be a short supply of thematic inspiration. Numerous bands have created concept albums based around their own ideas, or pen songs that take insight from creative writing, but few bands will dedicate the entire span of an album to an existing piece of literature. H.P. Lovecraft is the lifeblood of France s ambient black metal quintet, The Great Old Ones. The technique may sound one dimensional but it s what imagery is being portrayed by the guitars that command your attention, not how it is portrayed. Finally, a special mention has to go to Léo Isnard s pummelling drumming, which is nothing short of breathtaking throughout this accursed plot. The Great Old Ones have once again breathed further life into the fictional world of H.P Lovecraft as well as mastering their chosen aesthetic of atmospheric black metal. Moreover, their narration of The Shadow over Innsmouth vividly assures everyone, just like the novel once did, that humanity is doomed and the Esoteric Order of Dagon will be restored to its inescapable ... As well as this, despite the fact that the Graveyard book is derived from another book, Gaiman still manages to be at his absolute best, creating something original from a derived plotline. The Jungle Book has many characters, problems, resolutions, all adding up to an excellent story, but the Graveyard Book takes it to a whole new level, by adding all sorts of exceedingly exemplary writing, such ... It can be cause by various conditions, including mild to chronic diseases or illnesses, viruses, strokes or heart attacks. Subjective A middle aged, 46 year old male patient is complaining of chest pain, upon being brought to the urgent clinic. He recalls that he was in his backyard laying down new large, heavy stones for his new backyard patio. He works at a sedentary office job, and lives a sedentary lifestyle. The patient also complains of shortness of breath and indigestion, as he did not intake as much food that is need for an average male. He also suffers from asthma and GERD. Reviewing this data, the nurse can get more subjective data from the patient if they would to ask specific questions to obtain a complete health history like, when did the pain start? Does it hurt more if you touch it? Does this type of pain usually occur? How often does the pain occur? Where exactly on your chest does the pain occur? Is the pain superficial or deep? Does the pain feel like it is dull, sharp, or throbbing? On a scale of one to ten how would you rate your pain? What were you doing at the time the pain started? This agreement is known as the Oslo Accords or Peace Process . Just like several other peace acts in the world, the United States played a significant but limited role in making the Oslo Peace Accords happen. • 21. New Evidence Of Herihor s Northern Political Expansion As... New evidence of Herihor`s Northern political Expansion as a king Ahmed A. Faraman Abstract The relevant paper presents a detailed study of a remarkable scene belonging to Herihor as a king. The scene is situated on the eastern inner wall of the court of the temple of Khonsu at Karnak. The scene, with a preliminary iconography characterization and translation of the accompanying texts, has been published previously. But still offers possibilities for additional analysis. The contents offer a great variety of novel queries; among which one concerns Herihor`s relationship with Hathor of Dendera, based on the iconographic detail representing the king receiving his regal epithets incised inside cartouches. The study examines the relationship between the king and goddess, and includes a discussion of the titles in the Hb sed symbol surmounted by the crown of Upper Egypt. The present study, throughout the significance of the symbolism expressed by the scene, arrives at the conclusions of a clear geographical boundary; that Herihor, as a king, exerted control at least as far north as the region of Iwnt (Dendera). Introduction The rise of Herihor as a King is an expected result of precedent introductions. Towards the end of the Twentieth Dynasty, specifically during the reign of Ramses XI, royal authority was faded and forced to definitely bow before the increasing influence and power of the ambitious high priests of Amon in Thebes. Small spots of light were shone onto the restricted retinal regions which often would cause brisk responses and could be divided into excitatory and inhibitory regions (shown in fig.1). Excitatory areas if illuminated produced an increased frequency of firing compared to inhibitory regions, although both did produce responses. Stationary spots showed that the excitatory and inhibitory regions were aligned side by side within the central responsive area, flanked by antagonistic areas. Light stimulus covering the whole receptive field was practically ineffective in most units due to mutual antagonism between excitatory and inhibitory regions, shown in figure 1 (f). A vertical slit of light was projected, which only covered the excitatory areas and avoided all inhibitory areas, however when turned horizontally, it touched inhibitory areas and responses were dramatically reduced or lost completely. This was due to the stimulation of excitatory areas being smaller than the antagonistic areas that were stimulated and thus responses shielded. The excitatory and inhibitory areas had similar shape and positioning and responded in the same way to directional movement (Hubel and Wiesel, 1959). Simple and Complex Cells ... While Every Culture, Race, Community, And Family Have Their While every culture, race, community, and family have their own definition of normalcy, there are undisputable aspects that every being needs to pursue a successful lifestyle. With modernizing industrialization, came a more noticeable discrepancy on what these aspects should be. In Charles Dickens s 1854 novel, Hard Times, he explores these varying viewpoints while quite obviously taking a stand for one perspective. Throughout the novel, one can clearly see that there are two different models for raising a child. These models are through the guidance of Sleary s circus members and Mr. Gradgrind. Italy s Political And Economic On Going Crisis Question 1 Italy will be hosting a Renzi fied constitutional referendum this upcoming 4th of December and expect their voters to decide whether they approve of altering the constitution to restructure the legislative process by effectively reducing the upper chamber s power. Constitutional reform, with an exact motive to deprive the Senate of power, has been a desired goal since WW2. Italy s political and economic on going crisis has incentivized the Parliament to implement new enactments and thus far none of these laws have been effectively executed because of the legislatures intracameral conflict. Italy s method of navette has failed to resolve policy differences within the legislature with a never ending shuttle back and forth and thus has held the country captive in an ungovernable state. Ergo, Renzi believes the right path in his plan to stabilize the government is to change Italy s 56 year old constitution. Italy s parliament is structured under a symmetrical bicameral legislature with two chambers: Chamber of Deputies(hereafter referred to as lower house) and the Senate of the Republic(upper house). In order for a bill to be implemented, both houses have to approve the bill similarly, therefore without the confidence of both houses, attempts at implementing laws will continuously fail. The subject individuals do not take into thought is the reason why we are reading these specific works of literature. There is no way to read everything because Who reads must choose, since there is literally not enough time to read everything, even if one does nothing but read (Bloom 15). The most common reason is we, as a society, have deemed specific works greater than others, even adding the label of a classic on to them to show exactly that. She claimed that she did not want to be an astronaut and knew that there were little to no women in that profession. Then one day, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) sent out flyers looking for women to become apart of the program and that changed Sally Ride s life forever. NASA mainly recruited white males who were in the military to work for them. It was not until the Equal Employment Opportunity Act was passed that in a way forced NASA to consider women for some of their jobs. NASA then created a new job for astronauts which was to help the pilot on space flights (Friedman). Sally Ride was a very good student in high school and decided to go to Stanford University for college. At Stanford, she got her bachelor s degree in physics which she then narrowed it down to X ray astronomy and free electron laser research. Towards the end of her schooling at Stanford, Ride came across an article in the school newspaper talking about how NASA was in search for scientist to become specialists on one of their shuttles (Freni 151). Ride, just like 8,079 other people, sent in an application hoping to become a member of NASA s 1978 astronaut class. After a lengthy wait, Ride was told that she was one out of six women to be an astronaut candidate (Freni 152). On June 18, 1983, Sally Ride became the first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. The Glass Ceiling And Gender Analysis The Glass Ceiling is the title given to an invisible barrier that is meant to limit women from succeeding in top level jobs. They only judge based on their gender and do not take into account women s education, experience, or job related skills. Some argue that the only people who have put a limit to how far women can succeed in their career, are women themselves, but the Glass Ceiling and gender discrimination in the workforce does exist and is a major problem that needs to be addressed. Topics such as equal pay, discrimination, harassment, and misconceptions all play a part in the limiting barrier placed over women in the working world. It not only puts a limit on what women can achieve in their future profession, but also affects their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even so, the percentage of women who decided to join the work force increased from 43 60%. In fact because of the Great Recession in 2008 2009 impacted the male dominated industries the most, but it helped the acceleration towards gender equality (Conley, Dalton, 2013). Now there are approximately the same amount of women and men working in the labor force. Actually for a brief time, women even exceeded men due to this economic crisis. Even though the US passed title VII of the 1964 civil rights act, which declared it unlawful for employers to discriminate on the basis of a person s race, nationality, creed, or sex , women faced harder predicaments that they had to push through. Women have to deal with hard situations like harassment, a legal form of discrimination , with things like dirty jokes, and sexual haggle, where they are threatened to provide sexual favors or in turn would receive punishment (Conley, Dalton, 2013). Even nearly 40 years after the Equal Pay Act (1963) was passed, discrepancy between women and men flourish in the working world. There was a study performed by the general accounting office in 2003 which found that women earned 79.7% of what men were earning. As such, if we were to compare this finding to the findings in 1983 when women earned 80.3% we can clearly see that this wage gap is in no way diminishing (Alkadry, M.G., Tower, L.E., 1). There have been attempts to rectify and fight the unequal pay based on gender inequality through legislation, regulation, and litigation (Alkadry, M.G., Tower, L.E., 1). The Equal Pay Act was based off of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the process of rectification depends greatly on trying to enforce these two lawsuits. • 43. The Av Is An Accident Caused By An Av There are a number of parties that could inherently be liable for an accident caused by an AV, the potential parties include; the user, the owner of the AV, the manufacturer of the AV, the manufacturer of the AV components or AV technology, the AV code programmer, a government entity responsible for the intelligent highway or perhaps even the AV itself by allowing AVs to be considered as legal persons. There have also been arguments that the federal government should create legislation preempting state tort remedies for AVs. Yet, due to the advanced equipment inside AVs, it will be difficult to differentiate technological malfunctions from AV technology with those of driver negligence at the outset of mass AV use. In the foreseeable future when there will likely be no human driver this will not be an issue. Instead, the difficult part will be determining which manufacturer out of the many involved in the creation of the AV is at fault. Present day procedures for identifying who is at fault may not be satisfactory when the accident involves an AV. However, there is a potential solution to identifying which vehicle or driver is at fault for an accident in the form of black boxes ( Flight Data Recorders ), similar to the ones used on airplanes. Black boxes would monitor driver activity and record data leading up to accidents. This would create a privacy concern, but the collection of relevant information would tell investigators the story of the cars operations and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I believe these two decades, while 70 years apart, display similarities in terms of economic growth, and subsequent downturn. While there can be no real obvious similarities between entire decades, economic similarities are apparent but not identical in timeline or structure, and can be found by looking at the behavior of each period s respective stock markets and that of their consumers. Over the next few pages I intend to discuss some of the key highlights of these decades and compare their economic and political similarities. More importantly however, the economic boom of the 20s is in large part a result of the invention of the automobile. Because of their affordability, by the end of the decade there was one car per every five Americans ( The Roaring Twenties ). The automobile changed the flow of goods and people, taking them places they ve never been before. With the introduction of vehicles, roads were being paved to connect point A to B, opening up a whole new world of possibilities. Goods and people reached places in time once thought laughable, spurring expansion. The birth of Jazz could even be credited to the automobile. African Americans migrated north for the first time with many settling in Harlem, the creative hotbed from which Jazz emerged. • 45. Reactions And Reactions Of Redox Reactions Introduction: Without the millions of chemical reactions that occur every day, life would be completely different. An important class of common reactions includes those which involve the simultaneous transfer of electrons between chemicals, commonly referred to as redox reactions or oxidation reduction reactions. Redox reactions are whole reactions composed of two different half reactions known as oxidation (where electrons are lost) and reduction (where electrons are gained) (Chemguide, 2013). When there is an increase in the oxidation state, the reaction is oxidation; when there is a decrease, it is reduction. Oxidation cannot possibly occur without an affiliated reduction, and vice versa. Redox reactions are notated as such: Cu(s)  Cu2+ + 2e In the half reaction above, a copper ion (with a plus 2 charge) is formed from the oxidation of solid copper (with no charge). The e in the equation is an electron which is free to reduce other chemical atoms, such as in the half reaction: 2Ag+(aq) + 2e  2Ag(s) Two electrons are added to the two silver ions in this half reaction, in order to produce a solid silver. These two half reactions can be combined to form a redox equation as follows: Cu(s)  Cu2+(aq) + 2e 2 Ag+(aq) + 2e  2Ag(s) Cu(s) + 2Ag+(aq) + 2e  Cu2+(aq) + 2Ag(s) + 2e OR Cu(s) + 2Ag+(aq)  Cu2+(aq) + 2Ag(s) A ... She smoothed her hands over the bounty, cradling a tin of meat, as if it were a newborn kitten. Meat had been something we hadn t had in months and the cupboard had dozens of canned varieties along with fruits and vegetables. We all danced around the small room, holding hands and giggling. Biography of Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand Helmholtz Background Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand Helmholtz was born August 31, 1821 in Potsdam, Prussia to the Potsdam Gymnasium instructor of philosophy and literature, August Ferdinand Julius Helmholtz and Caroline Penn, descendent of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania (Cite brit). A product of a rich, intellectual environment, Helmholtz grasped complex concepts in various academic subjects. His father introduced him to philosophies that inspired him to broaden his mindset and explore English, Science, and Mathematics, which led to an overwhelming interest in languages (including English and Italian), music, nature philosophy, art and physiology. A student of the gymnasium, Hermann von Helmholtz touched on subjects ranging from theoretical physics, to the age of the Earth, to the origin of the solar system (cite wiki). He showed great promise as a scholar and was bound to be a success. After graduating in 1837, Helmholtz was awarded a free medical education at the Royal Friedrich Wilhelm Medical Institute of Medicine and Surgery on the condition that he serve eight years in the army as a doctor; he accepted the offer and enrolled at the institution in Berlin in 1838 (cite groups). While there, he did research under the paramount German physiologist, perhaps the greatest known to date, Johannes Müller (cite brit); studying works on mathematics by Daniel Bernoulli, Biot and Laplace and philosophy, mainly by Kant (cite group).
