Presidential Debate Analysis
Debate or Debacle? by Fatima Navarro, Freshmen staff writer
The debate this august 6, 2015 was held in Cleveland Ohio, the first debate for the presidential
campaign. Many of the comments made were ridiculously childish. The following topics were
discussed at the debate taxes, immigration, education, Obama s decisions, war, Isis, woman rights, and
gay marriage. Not many answers were proposed rather there were lots of snarky comments. Donald
Trump has such a massive ego while he picked on his opponents; then later claimed that he will get
the Latino vote. Rubio wants the economy to support free market economics and has proposed tax
cuts. These tax cuts are for small businesses with great ideas. Rubio proposed to reform the US

He does not agree with the Obama Care plan for he thinks it affects middle class families in not a
good way. Ben Carson is the director of Pediatric Neurosurgery and is the first doctor to separate twins
that were conjoined. He is very much known for his views on social and political issues. Mike
Huckabee has once tried to run as president but failed so this is his second time running. In the debate
he was asked about his view on gay marriage and of course being an ordained minister brought up god
and in general he didn t have anything against them just that they respect the church. In fact he added
that we recently attended a gay marriage of a friend of his. Scott Walker went to Marquette University
but did not graduate. Even though he was seen by many as a potential candidate and then chosen to
run for president, I think homosexuals would despise him for he is trying to ban gay marriage. Jeb
Bush is following his father s footsteps, after being elected governor twice in Florida he decided to run
for president. He wants to reduce global warming by cutting carbon emissions and has stressed the
role of private industry in addressing the problem. Bush believes that the plan No Child Left

Water Is The Second Largest Reserve Of Freshwater On Earth
The earth is like a living organism; it thrives full of life with a fragile balance. This balance has been
thrown off by many different things. Water seems to be one of the biggest problems with this offset
balance. Water is a magic liquid keeping all of life thriving. Humans drink and use water, plants use
water, water is used in everyday life, and it s slowly being taken away. In the future, there will be no
water left to sustain life on earth. Ground water is a very important part of our fresh water supply and
yet, it s depleting at a faster rate than what can be replenished. According to Kally Worm Groundwater
is the second largest reserve of freshwater on earth. It also makes up 40% of the freshwater used in the
U.S. alone. This ground water is usually found in what is called an aquifer. An aquifer is found
towards the lower layers of the soil. The problem with these aquifers it that their recharge rate is slow
making it non renewable. These water supplies being non re We are overusing these water supplies.
When ground water is used to a level of where it can t recover, it affects the ground. Sinkholes can be
formed when there is a aquifer that has water being drawn from it, but not letting it get back to par.
Other problems can also occur is too much ground water is pumped out near coasts. This creates what
s called salt water intrusion. Salt water intrusion is when the ocean water mixes with the fresh ground
water. This increases the salinity of the water making

Why Is Lying Unjustified
Lying, it s everywhere. Almost 60% of most adults can t go ten minutes without telling a lie. Some
people lie to protect other people, while others lie to benefit themselves like maintaining the perfect
image they care so much about. However, lying is completely unjustified unless you re protecting
yourself or someone else from danger. This idea can be further proven with evidence from a variety of
articles.
To begin, many people believe that lying is unjustified, like German philosopher Immanuel Kant.
Although, people agree with this statement, others may disagree. However, some people believe that
...lying is stressful and hurts relationships. (Ballinger 5). This proves that lying is unjustified because
if you chose to tell the truth it wouldn t be stressful; and also it wouldn t hurt relationships. Another
example within the text states, Delivering the truth is easier, takes less time, and is less stressful.
(Ballinger 5). This shows how if we tell the truth it s easier, and it s less time consuming. Furthermore,
when you lie sometimes you have to rack your brain to remember what you lied about. In addition,
when you lie you lose people s trust. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People like Brad Blanton believe this claim. For instance, sixty four year old Harold Smith lied to his
adult daughter about a tumor, he said, I tried to protect her. (NBCNEWS.com 3). Smith said that he
didn t want to get his daughter traumatized, he then said that it slowed down her anxiety. A piece of
evidence within the text states that it s ... OK to lie in certain situations, like protecting someone s
feelings. (NBCNEWS.com 2). This further demonstrates that many people believe lying is only
justified when protecting people. These examples shows how people use lying to protect

Reverend Dimmesdale In The Scarlett Letter
When people read a story, they most likely can relate to what happens to the main characters with
situations they went through or have heard of. If they cannot relate to what happens, they at least
know the problem that the character is struggling with or is trying to overcome. In life to get past a
problem, people might have to change or develop to figure out a solution. In the book, The Scarlet
Letter, a woman named Hester Prynne goes against her husband, Roger Chillingworth, and commits a
sin that is forbidden in this community. Reverend Dimmesdale is the man who was a part of this sin,
but he does not want to confess. The result of her sin was her daughter, Pearl, who is known around
town as the devil child. For violating the law of adultery, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hester has changed in so many different ways. First, Hester starts the story looking very ladylike, but
as the story progresses she becomes to look manly. Some of the townspeople believed she had cut her
hair off because she started always having it up. She starts to look ladylike again when she is in the
forest with Dimmesdale. Hester said she had to stay in Boston to face what she had done but being
with Dimmesdale changed her mind. She thought Dimmesdale and her could move away from all of
their sin `and start fresh. Another reason why Hester wanted to move away with Dimmesdale is so
Pearl can have a father figure in her life. In vast London or, surely, in Germany...thou wouldst be
beyond his power and knowledge (Hawthorne 218). Another way Hester grows is her choice of going
with the Black Man. Hester would have gone with the Black Man to get away from all her troubles.
Since they did not take Pearl away from her, Hester stayed and Pearl changed her view on life. Had
they taken her from me, I would have willingly have gone with thee into the forest (Hawthorne 129).
One of the changes that occur since she has gotten the Scarlet Letter is her view of people. She
understands and has the knowledge of other s sins but the downfall is she loses faith. The last change
she goes through is her needing to wear the Scarlet Letter. Townspeople say she may, she does take it
off privately in the forest (Johnson 133). At first, Hester believes she must wear the Scarlet Letter and
if it gains another meaning or just falls off then it is okay not to wear it. Eventually, the forest is a
place where she feels safe and away from the rules of the community so she feels it is okay to be able
to take it off. There are many more changes or growths that Hester has went through but can people
really relate to

Evolution Of Tattoos Research Paper
Tattoos are a taboo throughout society in different regions of the world. The practice of body art
demonstrates many aspects of religion, traditions, customs, and other things. A tattoo can mean
anything to anybody. People can say all the negative things about them, but the evolution of tattoos is
actually different from their expectations. The origins of tattooing dates back to nearly 5,000 years.
The first people to ever have tattoos were mummies. Over the years, archaeologists have discovered a
variety of mummies with body art of their own. The most famous tattooed ancient man is Ötzi the
Iceman, who died high in the Italian Alps more than 5,000 years ago. Ötzi is covered with more than
50 tattoos in the form of lines and crosses made with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most of what we know about the culture comes from artifacts taken from shaft tombs usually by tomb
raiders including examples of heavily tattooed hollow ceramic figurines. Some scholars believe the
figurines depict gods, while Christopher Beekman of the University of Colorado Denver suspects that
they may in fact represent the people with whom they were buried. Certainly the designs were
intended to communicate identity and status, particularly considering that the figurines appear to have
been used in ceremonial contexts, and also set up in residential areas to be seen and visited. According
to Beekman, it is notable that the tattooing occurs prominently around the mouth, which may refer, as
it does in Classic Maya society, to the breath of life or the capacity of polished speech of these

Analysis Of First They Killed My Father By Loung Ung
In First They Killed My Father, Loung Ung talks about the downfall of Cambodia when the country is
being taken over by the Angkar soldiers and Khmer Rouge during war. Loung Ung s childhood
wartime experiences in Cambodia impacted her life in multiple ways.
One way Ung s childhood experiences affected her life wasn t being able to practice a religion. In her
memoir, Ung wrote, The Khmer Rouge government also bans the practice of religion. Kim [her
brother] says the Angkar does not want people worshiping any gods or goddesses that might take
away devotion to the Angkar, (Ung 322). Ung talks about what standards were set for religion. She

My Key Point For Success
Success is defined as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. There is different techniques people
use to make sure they reach success. I have read some stories that all have dealt with someone aiming
for success. The stories I read are A Right To Choose Single Sex Education, Next Term, We ll Mash
You, Raising Smart Kids, A Walk To The Jetty, and ILE. There are four techniques I use to be
successful. The first is knowing my strengths and weaknesses. The second thing I do to reach success
is focusing on myself and not on others or what is going on around me. Another technique for myself
to be successful is to keep in mind what I really want and working towards my goals. My last key

I show what and how much I actually know when I am either by myself or with all girls. I can t choose
who I have class with but I use this strength to better my weakness. I still try my best whether there is
all boys or all girls in my class.
Another thing to reach success is to focus on myself and not what is going on around me. When I was
younger I only cared to hang out with friends. School was not important to me, mainly because
everything felt too hard for me. Even though I have brothers, they weren t much of a help when it
came to school. The story The Secret To Raising Smart Kids by Carol S. Dweck talked about two
different mindsets people can have. One of them was a growth mindset and the other was a fixed
mindset. To have a growth mindset is to know that your intelligence can be molded. To have a fixed
mindset is to believe intelligence is something you are born with. I was always a students with a fixed
mindset. They thought that a person with talent or intelligence did not need to work hard to do well.
Attributing a bad grade to their own lack of ability, those with a fixed mindset said that they would
study less in the future, try never to take that subject again and consider cheating on future tests. (lines

Amish Technology
Technology has been ruining our lives since its inception back in the 23,460 BCE revolution of the
cavemen, when the people rushed to the mall to buy the new iOoga (now with more stone). You may
be thinking Hasn t technology made our lives easier? I can get any information in 30 seconds! . You
may even be right (shocker). However, this kind of information is the very cause of our downfall. It
ruins our lives by killing us, taking our jobs and happiness, and killing the environment. I humbly
offer a solution that all citizens of the world are to be made Amish, and block technology from our
lives all together. The Amish are a very peaceful, old fashioned religious society where most, if not all
technology is banned.

With the use of cars, gasoline and electric (yes, even your Prius or Tesla is not helping), the ozone
layer is depleted more and more, and permanently. Electric cars still require the same amount of metal
and leather and other resources to build as non electric cars, so they are not better in that vein. Your
electric car doesn t need gas, but it still might get its energy from burning carbon. It depends on how
your local grid generates electricity. If you use coal fired power plants to produce the electricity, then
all electrics don t even look that much better than a traditional vehicle in terms of greenhouse gases
(Wade, par 4). As these cars are not more environmentally friendly than cars and other motorized
vehicles, the horse and buggy proves to be a much more superior choice of transport, powering over
even the one of a kind Lamborghini Aventador (which has 750 horsepower, impeccable brakes, and
phenomenal steering). The Amish way of life is far cleaner to the environment, and if the world s
humans convert immediately, then the world may yet be saved. Scientists have concluded that most of
the observed warming is very likely due to the burning of coal, oil, and gas (Carroll, par 1). The
Amish do not need to mass farm fish or whale oil. They do not need to melt the ice caps in their path
of survival, and they

Comparison Between Menkaure and His Wife, and Nike from...
Naturalism in art refers to the depiction of realistic objects in a natural setting. The Realism
movements of the 19th century advocated naturalism in reaction to the stylized and idealized
depictions of subjects in Romanticism, but many painters have adopted a similar approach over the
centuries. One example of Naturalism is the artwork of American artist William Bliss Baker, whose
landscape paintings are considered some of the best examples of the naturalist movement. Idealism is
the attitude that places special value on ideas and ideals as products of the mind, in comparison with
the world as perceived through the senses. In art idealism is the tendency to represent things as

By an unknown artist, the sculpture is thought to date from the period 220 BC 190 BC (though some
scholars date it as early as 250 BC or as late as 180 BC). Her drapery serves to dramatically
emphasize both her dynamic forward movement against the wind and her full, robust form her
powerful thighs and the active, contracted muscles of her torso. The drapery clings with thin, long,
and uneven ripples to her breasts, abdomen, right leg, and left thigh, its near transparency revealing
these parts of the body almost as if they were nude. Excess fabric forms heavy yet dynamically
irregular shapes and bunches. A long, uneven arc of cloth between her legs accentuates their motion
and implies the counter force of the wind against her body. The sculptor draws attention to this
downward arc with a swath of drapery that flies forward from the left hip and collides in a V shape
with the longer swath at the Nike s pelvis. At the same time, in the back of the statue fabric soars out
behind the figure in rigid crests. The effect of this drapery is choppy and uneven, the wind whipping
the cloth as it does sea below into irregular peaks and troughs. A partial inscription on the base of the
statue includes the word Rhodhios (Rhodes), indicating that the statue was commissioned to celebrate

Pathos, Pros, And Cons And Uses Of The Hyundai Commercials
One product most people use in their everyday lives are vehicles. I have chosen two commercials, one
advertising the Honda Ridgeline and the other marketing the Hyundai Elantra. In the Honda
commercial, a farmer tends to his sheep, that start singing as soon as the farmer drives away. The
Hyundai commercial is very comical, showing a town where everyone is Ryan Reynolds to catch your
attention. These commercials use pathos, ethos, and logos to sell their product. Advertisements use
many forms of persuasion to get people to buy their product. One of these is pathos, which appeals to
the emotions of the audience and evokes their feelings. In the Honda commercial, one can see sheep in
the pasture singing to Somebody to Love after the farmer drives off in his new Honda Ridgeline. This
is very humorous, considering sheep do not speak, let alone belt out notes from Queen. Not only are
there singing sheep, but there is a talking dog towards the end of the commercial which tells those
who are watching about the Honda Ridgeline ( Honda Ridgeline Super Bowl Commercial internet).
This is similar to the Hyundai commercial, which is also very amusing. The audience can see two
women driving through a neighborhood, where every person is Ryan Reynolds. This shows pathos,
because it appeals to the viewers emotions by laughing at the comical commercial ( Ryanville
Hyundai Super Bowl internet). Another form of persuasion commercials use is ethos, which appeals to
one s ethics. In the

There are many threats to the coral reefs, but one of the worst things that we do to damage of them are
using dynamite and cyanide to catch our fishes. Dynamite fishing is particularly used near Tanzania,
because fishermen find it easier to catch fish by killing them and the letting them float to the surface.
Rather than them using a net, because it would either snag on the coral reef or miss all the fishes. The
dynamite technique consists of throwing any type of dynamite or waterproof exploding object, into the
water, waiting for it to reach the coral reef (home to the fishes). Paddling away from the explosive,
then pushing the button which will explode the coral reef. Last, you collect the dead fish that float to
the top of the water, because their air bladders cause them to become resilient. Some fishermen use
dynamite fishing at night to catch even more fish, which may sound weird because they can t see
anything at night. However, what happens is the fishermen shine a bright light into the water, which
attracts small and large fish. Then with a push of a button they explode the dynamite causing all of
those animals to die, but in addition to the fish they also kill shrimp and crabs without knowing. A
man from the World Wildlife Fund observed the explosions, and created a chart based on his findings.
Then he concluded that around nineteen

Population Control In Brave New World Essay
Introduction
Intro Strategy Primary assertion
Our society is moving towards a world like that of Brave New World. This is something we should be

The World State controls the citizens by controlling their fertility. This quote shows the power the
World State has over overpopulation because they are deciding the fertility rates.
C. BBC stated that China s government says the one child policy, officially in place since 1979, has
prevented 400 million births. ii. This is a step forward in Huxley s vision because it is controlling the
number of family members per unite instead of allowing each family to decide on its own. It controls
population growth with the goal to lower population to a stable number.
Alexandra Paul stated that One of the advantages of having only a child in the family is the
opportunity given to the newborn of having a comfortable life. This is because all the attention, love
and financial resources of the parents will be enjoyed by the child. iii. Analysis: Having population
control children would live a better life due to the love they get. They would be more job opportunity
and many people would be content.
D. Our world is already taking steps toward that of Huxley s Brave New World due to the fact that we
are already placing policies like one child policy, which control the world s population.

Yonec And Bisclavret By Marie De France
Marie de France uses Yonec and Bisclavret to express the animal/human boundary in the medieval
period. In Bisclavret, Marie used the werewolf to show how animals lack reason. In Yonec, Marie uses
the hawk man to show how animal natures are correlated with the lower passions. Also in the
medieval period animals were thought to not have souls. The soul is defined as a person s moral or
emotional nature or sense of identity. This point is interesting because the body encapsulates the soul,
in a way that it hides your true identity, whether you are a human or a human who changes into an
animal. When Bisclavret and the knight changed their physical natures, they did not suddenly lack a
soul but their soul was preserved. The body just acts as a vessel ... Show more content on

a person s looks are a kind of perceived identity. For instance, Bisclavret was described as a handsome

deepest part of the woods and feeds off anything he can capture. Also, his wife is initially described as
worthy and attractive in appearance. However, although she doesn t transform into an animal she has a

knowing that would entrap him in his werewolf form. He would in turn receive her hand in married as

Pros And Cons Of Medical Abortion In The United States
Abortion is a medical procedure that removes the fetus or embryo is born. Abortion is a highly
controversial topic in the United States. Americans who are usually against Abortion as a practice are
against because of their moral or religious reasons they call themselves pro life. They claim that they
are violating the right of the baby that is going to be born. Americans who are pro choice take the
stance that it is mainly the women s choice and it is a human right. In many states abortion Abortion
could either be surgical or medical. Most of the abortions in the United States occur in the first

Human Needs
Human Needs In connection to motivation, Maslow identified a hierarchy of needs that needed to be
satisfied. He arranged these needs in a hierarchy manner starting from the lowest going to the highest.
These needs were arranged in a pyramid where the lowest needs had to be met first before meeting the
highest needs. He divided these needs in seven categories where the lowest four comprised of the
deficiency needs while the upper three comprised of the growth needs. It is mandatory to meet the
deficiency needs before a person is motivated to meet the growth needs. Deficiency needs include

Love can be shown by addressing students in a polite manner and helping them when they have
problems. Teachers should not mistake this need and engage students into romantic relationships
because this will be a violation of the rules. Sense of belonging is evident when students do things
together without segregating others; this makes everyone feel accepted hence sense of belonging
(Griffin and Moorehead, Pg 93). Self Worth and Self Esteem Needs When people have met their needs
of love and belonging, they are motivated to look for self worth and self esteem needs. These needs
make a person feel important and esteemed. When people make fun of somebody, the person feels he
is not worthy thus he does not have self esteem. Embarrassing situations have made people feel
unworthy and unimportant. Teachers should nurture self worth and esteem by recognizing and
appreciating what students do. This can be achieved by giving rewards that make students feel
important. Teachers can involve students in the teaching process hence making students appreciated
and recognized. It is the teachers responsibility to stop students who intimidate others because this
may result in a student losing self worth and esteem. Deficiency Needs Physiological, safety and

Flood Myth of the Holy Bible and the Epic of Gilgamesh...
The Biblical Flood and The Epic of Gilgamesh Flood
In Genesis of the Old Testament the account of the Flood approximates the account recorded on Tablet
11of the Sumero Babylonian version of the epic of Gilgamesh, discovered in the 1800 s by British
archaeologists in Assyria.
N.K. Sandars in the Introduction to his book, The Epic of Gilgamesh, sums up the involvement by the
pagan gods in the Sumero Babylonian Flood narrative:
In the Gilgamesh flood Ishtar and Enlil are as usual the advocates of destruction. Ishtar speaks,
perhaps in her capacity as goddess of war, but Enlil prevails with his weapon of the storm. Only Ea, in
superior wisdom, either was not present, or being present was silent, and with his ... Show more

In Column 2 of Tablet 11 the Sumero Babylonian Flood narrative continues with the measurements
and construction of the ark:
One acre was its whole floorspace; ten dozen cubits the height of each wall;
ten dozen cubits its deck, square on each side.
I [Utnapishtim] laid out the contours, drew it all.
I gave it six decks
and divided it, thus, into seven parts.
Its innards I divided into nine parts.
I struck water plugs into it.
I checked the poles and laid in all that was necessary.
I poured 24,000 gallons of bitumen into the kiln;
the same amount I laid on the inside.
The basket bearers brought on three shars of oil
in addition to the shar of oil consumed in the seed meal
and the two shars of oil stowed away by the boatman.(Gardner 231)
On the seventh day the ark was completed. It was launched, and then loaded with all my kin and
family and with the animals of the fields. This ark has twice the number of floors as Noah s ark. After
the Jewish Old Testament establishes reasons for the Flood, then it proceeds with specific building
instructions to Noah in Genesis 6:14:

Afghanistan Culture Vs American Culture Essay
Afghanistan has gone through centuries of turmoil, being controlled by different groups throughout its
entire history. Starting with Indo Europeans, to Persians, and Greek power with Alexander the Great in
the 4th century BC. India then had an influence, and in the 7th century the Islamic empire came to
power. The European Dark Ages was the time of the Mongol Khanates in Afghanistan, with most of
Afghanistan in the Persian Ilkhanate, and the northeastern peninsula in the Chagatai Khanate. This is
where the Hazara ethnicity is believed to have originated (GALE|CX183...), which makes sense
considering Amir s descriptions of Hassan. In the early 16th century, a ruler from central Asia, Babur,
set up camp in Kabul. He then goes to conquer India, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Afghanistan s cuisine, ethnic composition, native dress, religious and ceremonial traditions, as well as
interpersonal relations and folklore are all prime examples of this cultural richness(GALE|CX183...).
Amir s name is itself an example, in Hebrew meaning branch (Name, Meaning, and Biblical Context
of Amir), and in Arabic meaning ruler or prince (Amir). Their food is a distinct melange of Indian,
Chinese, Persian, and Middle Eastern elements, with naan at every meal, and a mild palate of
spices(GALE|CX340...). Clothing is much the same cultural melange. Men wear turbans, which are
present in both Indian and Islamic culture, and women wear chadris or simply a dress with trousers
and a shawl over their head, again mirroring the dress of the Middle East and India(GALE|CX183...).
However, the mixture of influences defining the culture here quickly begins to dissipate as The Kite
Runner continues. The opening of The Kite Runner, is set in 1960s 70s Afghanistan under Zahir Shah,
who, despite government claims to citizens, is under minor influence of the Soviets. Their culture is
thriving, the economy is flourishing, and with a Soviet funded pipeline in place, life is good. The
environment appears quite western and calm. Amir can visit the movie theatre, the market, and
children can roam freely in the streets with no immediate danger. Women are free to move around the
country, and people expressed their opinions. Zahir Shah is working on slowly modernising the

The Role Of The Puritans
The Puritans The Puritans were a group of people who were set out to get away from the British
colony. They came into America to start a new life set apart from their past experiences in a monarch
society. Their intentions were to purify the churches of England of their Catholic way. They are a
group who worship the Bible. They expect all other Puritans to know their Ten Commandments. They
are one of the first groups to inhabit America. The first actual people were the Native Americans and
then the Pilgrims. There is a difference between the pilgrims and the puritans. The difference is that
the pilgrims came to America to get away from the Church of England and be separate. They want to
separate because they believe that England is violating the rules of the Bible. The Puritans also came
to get away from the church because they believed that the church in England still needed further
reform. That is why they started their own church in America, so they can make their own rules and be
free. The play is about the group of puritans who came to start their church in Salem. In the beginning,
there was little talk of witchcraft (Wiggins, 2012). People were starting to grow suspicious of Parris
because his slave and niece and a couple other girls were dancing in the woods (Wiggins, 2012). Also
his daughter was in a coma and would not wake up. Eventually he decided to call in Hale, who is a
professional with witchcraft, to determine what was going on. Although he was said to be
professional, later on we come to find out that he was starting to think he was wrong but he keeps that
to himself (Wiggins, 2012). Then towards the end after there had been many deaths, he decides to tell
them that they are innocent. The judge tells him that many have been hung already, so they cannot
stop now because that would be unfair. What this passage says is, they are a group who believes in the
bible and worship the bible, and they are strict on witchcraft (Wiggins, 2012). If somebody accuses
someone of witchcraft, the only way to live is to confess that you are working with the devil. It also
shows how harsh the court is and how they do not let anybody be considered innocent by making
them lie to the court or they

Henry Thoreau And Niccolo Machiavelli
Leadership is the most important quality for the head of any nation, or any other political leader. To be
a good leader, you must have many attributes that qualify you for such a huge responsibility. There are
good crisis leaders who would fail in a period of calm. What is clear, is that leadership is a
complicated concept. We have consistently found that good leaders have passion and values,
confidence yet humility, knowledge and realism; Having these attributes and the ability to use them
and develop them in others is the foundation for reaching goals and being successful in a leadership
position. Henry David Thoreau and Niccolo Machiavelli are two men who have influenced some of
the most influential people in the world, as the two were writing to different audiences, it s easy to see
why their ideologies might clash or unite; Henry Thoreau and Niccolo Machiavelli both use an
abundant amount of rhetorical strategies in both of their stories, including ethos, pathos, and logos;
both of the stories also have their fair share of differences.
The main rhetorical device in The Prince is logos. Nearly every sentence from the passage could be
considered logical. Machiavelli achieves this through his formal and straightforward narration, which
helps him maintain objectivity. His use of logos helps achieve his propose by delivering concise facts
about the proper way to rule during this period of time. By employing logic, Machiavelli manages to

Precipitation Of Precipitation
Precipitation Analysis
With an average annual total rainfall of 53.1 inches, the six stations examined and their mean rates of
precipitation are consistent with the claim that the entire state of Florida receives, on average, 54
inches of precipitation annually. Stations like Deland, Inverness, High Springs and Canal Point
differed little from the expected mean, while Marathon Shores and Niceville deviated noticeably. This
deviation, however, is chiefly explained by the stations locations and the patterns of rainfall associated
with those positions. For example, Marathon Shore s aberration is likely due to the fact that the area
received comparatively less rainfall during the summer months of June through September with a
rather low mean ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Deland, Inverness and Canal Point, for example, are situated much closer to the coast when compared
to High Springs, and they exhibit a greater total annual precipitation rate of 53.72 inches as opposed to
High Spring s 52.27 inches and a greater annual monthly mean of 4.48 inches compared to the 4.36
inches of High Springs. While relatively small, this variance among precipitation rates is still great
enough to confirm the claim that most of the time, at least, stations located closer to the coast
experience overall higher mean monthly and mean annual precipitation rates.
Using the data collected solely from the selected six stations, a possible correlation is unclear between
the amount of precipitation received and the number of hurricane strikes within a given area despite
the claim made in the conceptual model. Niceville, for instance, experiences the highest overall mean
monthly and mean annual precipitation of the six stations in addition to experiencing the highest mean
precipitation rate during the specified months of July through October with a mean of 6.68 inches, but
according to the first map provided in the guidance document, it did not experience the highest
number of hurricane strikes. Between the years of 1900 to 2010, Niceville was hit but 10 to 12
hurricanes, but the station that received the least amount of rain both in terms of mean monthly and
mean annual precipitation and the

 Resource Sharing Computer resources can be shared in the network such as the printer, scanner,
modem etc. This allows us to track down the uses of resources. For example, a network administrator
can set up a printer server and share it in the network. Then the user can use printer server for printing.
Now administrator needs only to monitor the print server instead of individual workstations. This is
economically better.  Application Sharing Application sharing is the most common in companies.
Companies may have a business application that needs to be updated by several users. Sharing make it
possible. It allows several users to work together on a single application.  Economic benefits With
computer networking, you can use a lot of software and hardware available on the market which can
just be stored or installed on a server and can be used by various workstations. Dis Advantage: 
Need of Technicians The network should be checked frequently monitored for good performance and
no problems on its physical and logical component. The expert technicians are required to do so it cost
a lot of money to hire them for all time  Network failure If any server like the file, print etc. fail then
the whole network is affected. If any hardware fails the nodes cannot be used.  Expensive It is
expensive to build and run the network. Expensive hardware like a router, cables, hub,

Inquisitorial System Vs United States Criminal Justice System
The United State Criminal Justice System is entirely different from the French. France system is and
inquisitorial system where part of the court is actively involved in investigating the facts. In the U.S a
judge is essentially a referee in court proceedings, compared to the French system were the judge is
known as the inquisitor who establishes the truth and justice. Judges question witnesses, interrogate
suspects as well as order searches for other investigations. In France they do have the means of the 5th
amendment like the U.S, but you can be compelled to give evidence. French system is based off of
Roman law, which allows the judge to have higher power in order to control investigations and
prosecutions. In the U.S juries are particularly

Negative Effects Of Overdependence On Technology
Overdependence on technology can affect me negatively, but I still feel glad to live in a technology
based society because technology allows me to communicate overseas with my parents. As time
progresses, technology is becoming more advanced and is improving my lives. It enhances my lives
by allowing me to communicate with others without concerning how far we are apart. Most
importantly, different kinds of technology have various applications, which also known as apps , to let
me download and stay in touch with my friends and family. However, as everyone owns smart phones
and computers, critics such as Nicholas Carr, argues the negative impacts that technology can bring to
society. Technology such as smart phones helps me to communicate with my parents quicker and
easier. Four years ago, I moved to America by myself to continue my high school education. After I
moved to America, I began to worry about communicating with my parents. This is because my
parents live in Hong Kong and it is far away from America. If my parents want to visit me, they will
need to take a plane and travel 16 hours to come here. Therefore, seeing my parents face to face and
talking with them is extremely challenging. Luckily, I have a smartphone that permits me to download
free apps such as WhatsApp and Skype. The biggest advantage of these apps is they enable me to
maintain an evening routine of video chatting with my parents even though we are apart. I usually chat

Public Schools Vs. Private Schools
After having children many parents question which school system is better suited for their kids and
which aspect is more important, convenience or quality education? Some people believe the public
schools provide the same education but at a lower cost. Tooley, Dixon, and Gomathi state many
assume that private education is concerned only with serving the privileged, so is irrelevant to
concerns about extending access to the poor. Although there are some private schools that are
expensive, most are affordable for lower income families. However, others feel that private schools
encourage a more advanced education because there are less students and smaller classrooms. I

Private schools, unlike public schools, do not receive tax revenues. Therefore, they are not required to
follow the same regulations and bureaucratic processes that govern state funded schools, which
sometimes hinder the public system. According to Great Schools, this allows many private schools to
be highly specialized, offering differentiated learning, advanced curriculum, or programs geared
toward specific religious beliefs. While I was at Lakewood the classroom size ranged from twenty
four to thirty students for each grade and the smaller rooms allowed more one on one time with the
teacher. The students were encouraged to reach out to the teacher when there was confusion over a
topic discussed in class. Also if the student was not progressing or making an initiative to study, the
teacher would contact the parent/parents to create a plan that would help the learner. During my
elementary years, the private school also taught about manners, respect and Christian values. So when
I moved to a different town, I was forced to go to a public school in Ada. I learned very soon that the
two school systems have extremely different methods of teaching. The teachers were sometimes less
willing to help the student succeed and most did not communicate well with my parents when I was
having difficulty adjusting to a new school. Another problem I noticed was the teachers did not try

Essay On The Massachusetts Bay Colony
The Massachusetts colony, otherwise known as the Massachusetts Bay colony was originally settled
by Puritans in 1630. They were plagued by the religious persecutions of King Charles I and the
Church of England. Weary from this dogged torment, they left England under the leadership of John
Winthrop. These original colonists quickly established many small towns in the name of high religious
ideals and strict societal rules. They also planted churches, spread Puritanism and religiously educated
the masses, as these were some of their goals. A utopian society that other colonies looked upon with
high regards was the ultimate goal. The charter that gave the Puritans freedom to leave the England

Strong religious views that coincided with a reverence for family and accountability for one s own
actions made for a strict lifestyle in the colony. The minister was considered to be the most important
man within the community. To have spoken out or fallen asleep during a four hour sermon was
thought to be unacceptable and a harsh punishment was handed out. Another example of the rigidness
of the colony was that if a person were to miss a sermon without just cause, they were to be placed in
a pillory and have their ear nailed to it. Simplicity was a key element in worship as there were no
candles, religious ritual, or decoration. Emphasis was solely placed on the sermon. Puritans did not
participate in traditional holidays as it was thought to be sacrilegious. Dramatic plays along with any
form of gambling were banned also. Oddly enough, drinking was allowed but no toasts could be made
as it was considered to be wasteful. Another core belief was the family had a social order . The father
was the head of the household, with mother as the helper (as stated in the Bible) and children were the
lowest in the hierarchy. Obedience of the children in the home was expected and demanded. A just
love of the children was to discipline the children justly. If the children were obedient then the
austerity and goodness of the mother were seen to be her saving grace in the hereafter. However, if the
mother was too tender loving and not stern with the

Introduction The members of the largest ethnic group being granted legal permanent residence in the
United States are from Mexico. According the 2010 census 16.3% of the population of the United
States is Latino (Spector, 2013). The Latino population will increase to 30 % of the total population by
the year 2050 based on current projections (Juckett, 2013). There are several barriers to health care
faced by many in the Latino population. They include: language barriers, lack of health insurance,
mistrust, not have a legal status and a different culture of health care (Juckett, 2013, p. 48). Juckett
also points out that most medications that require a prescription in the US are obtained without
prescriptions in immigrants home countries (2013).
It is estimated that 20% of the U. S. population use herbal medicine. The prevalence of herbal
medicine use by some ethnic and cultural groups in the US may be even higher; one meta analysis
found that 4% to 40% (mean 30%) of Latinos living in the United States regularly used herbal
medicine (Kiefer, Tellez Giron, Bradbury, 2014, p. 64). The growing number of Latinos in the US and
their reliance on herbal remedies is something that healthcare providers are going to have to address to
be able to provide culturally competent care to this population.

Root Cellar Theodore Roethke Analysis
Theodore Roethke s poem Root Cellar has one stanza, and eleven lines total. Upon first reading the
title, I admit that it doesn t strike me as very original. This poem can very well be a description of the
author s cellar; a snapshot of an event being held in said cellar. The author begins with telling us that
nothing would sleep in [the] cellar . At first I pondered why the author would put that part in at the
very beginning, but as I read on I found that the beginning was the correct placement; it pulled the
reader (me) in, and had me asking, Why wouldn t anything sleep down there? Was it hot? Musty?
Dark? The author describes the cellar as dark, and uses similes, dank as a ditch and, roots ripe as old
bait to describe the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They then go on to describe the rotting roots, the decomposing leaves, the lime, etc. to further the
feeling of disgust when one thinks of such a place. The last two lines threw me for a loop however.
Nothing would give up life: Even the dirt kept breathing a small breath. Suddenly, my thoughts of
disgust transformed to more positive ones. Instead of thinking, Why would anyone allow something to
become so disgusting? , I think about how the leaves and the roots refused to go away. The shoots
continued to hang, low and in the way; the leaves and roots continued to make their presence known
by giving off the strong smell of decomposing matter. After reading the poem, I m still not 100% sure
on what the theme is. There was a shift from negative to positive in the last three lines, and lots of
imagery. Even then the poem still comes across as abstract and slightly vague. The author could be
describing their life; maybe the run down cellar and decaying roots are representations of an unhappy
or dysfunctional childhood. Maybe, in writing this, they are accepting that those memories will never
go away, but they don t define who they are. Or maybe the author is describing a time when they went
to get something from their cellar, and realized how disgusting it was. As always, it s whatever the
reader wants it to

The story of Adam and Eve dates back to the creation of humanity. Adam and Eve are the first people

Adam s rib. Through clay, God molded a shape of a man, and into it, He breathed life. The mold
slowly opened eyes and began to live. God called this mold Adam.
After the creation of Adam, God made a beautiful garden for him to live. This garden God called it the

Moreover, the story of Snow White by Walt Disney is one of the most popularly recognizable and
most enduring tales in the western literature. The close analysis of the story reveals a hidden and
gruesome tale that Disney had to bring to sanity to make it appealing for audiences and also family.
The story opens as a queen is standing at a window with an ebony frame while snow is falling outside
and she pricks her finger. The queen makes a wish that her daughter should grow up to be as white as
snow when she looks at the blood from her finger. She also wishes that her daughter will grow to be as
red as her blood and as black as the ebony flame. Amazingly, the queens daughter grows up to be as
her mother wished. The daughter is named then Snow white since her color correlates snow.
Snow whites mother dies, and the king marries another wife. This second wife has a magical mirror
which she always looks at to tell her everything. When she asks the mirror, who is beautiful in the

Physics of Roller Coasters Essay
Roller coasters are driven almost entirely by inertial, gravitational and centripetal forces. Amusement
parks keep building faster and more complex roller coasters, but the fundamental principles at work
remain the same.
A roller coaster is like train. It consists of a series of connected cars that move on tracks. But unlike a
passenger train, a roller coaster has no engine or power source of its own. For most of the ride, a roller
coaster is moved only by the forces of inertia and gravity. The only exertion of energy occurs at the
very beginning of the ride, when the cars are pulled up the first hill, or the lift hill .
The purpose of this first climb is to build up potential energy. The concept of ... Show more content on

If the track slopes down, gravity pulls the front of the car toward the ground, so it accelerates. If the
track tilts up, gravity applies a downward force on the back of the coaster, so it decelerates.
The track begins with a steep climp, building up potential energy in the coaster car. The rest of the
track s hills, valleys, twists and turns are to change the built up energy back and forth between
potential energy and kinetic energy. As the train moves, it gradually loses energy to friction until it
reaches the end of the ride.
There are two major types of roller coasters, which are defined by what their tracks are made out of:
wooden and tubular steel. The tracks of wooden roller coasters are a little like traditional railroad
tracks. The metal wheels of the cars roll on a flat metal strip, about 4 to 6 inches across. This strip is
bolted to a running track made out of laminated wood. In most coasters, the car wheels have the same
flanged design as the wheels of a train (the inner part of the wheel has a wide lip that keeps the car
from rolling off the side of the track). The car also has another set of wheels that runs underneath the
track. This keeps the cars from flying up into the air.
Wooden coaster tracks are braced by wooden crossties and diagonal support beams. The whole track
structure is supported by wooden or steel beams However, since the track and support structure are so

The novel Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant is one of Tyler s more complex because it involves not
only the growth of the mother, Pearl Tull, but each of her children as well. Pearl must except her faults
in raising her children, and her children must all face their own loneliness, jealousy, or imperfection. It
is in doing this that they find connections to their family. They find growth through suffering.
Cody Tull, the oldest child and the one most damaged by the failure of his parents marriage he
becomes an aggressive, quarrelsome efficiency expert. (Voelker 126) He feels that it his fault that

Ezra creates and manages a restaurant that corrects the excessive closeness of his family with an
atmosphere that consoles the customer while making no demands. (Volker 126) This was his idealistic
home.
Jenny, the youngest, becomes a pediatrician, a professional mother, who can avoid stifling emotional
obligations. (Volker 126) She, as a child, ignores most of what s going on so that no emotional harm is
done to her. Jenny exclaimed: We made it didn t we? We did grow up. Why, the three of us turned out
fine. , as if she has no regrets nor has made no mistakes. This shows how she ignores and avoided
emotional conflict throughout her life.
Pearl often wondered how other families worked and why hers didn t. At one point late in life she
indulges in the signal act of idealization imagining the lives of other, happy families (Voelker 128).
She always kept outsiders out of the lives of the Tulls. She did this for two reasons. The first was so no
one could see their problems and the second was so her children couldn t see what they were missing.
Closed families produce people less socially and personally satisfied. For instance, the son or daughter
in a family business may tell the parent what to do with the business, but their relationship problem is
never really resolved. It is just

Plato Vs Aristotle Vs Plato
Plato and Aristotle had a considerable amount of differences in ideology given that Aristotle was Plato
s student for roughly two decades. Plato, a student of Socrates, opposed the idea of average citizens to
participate in politics because he believed that political practice was skill or technē that can only be
achieved by a few people. He believed that kings must be those among them who have proved best
both in philosophy and where war is concerned. (Republic, 491) and that these philosopher kings were
the only people fit to rule a government, or the government would be doomed to fail. Aristotle is
highly critical of Plato and his ideal constitution but he does find a similar form of ruling class to be
ideal. He believes, in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They hold the job of protecting the city and well as making all of the diplomatic decisions. They
cannot bother themselves with wordy possessions, like property or family and must live in communes
with the other guardians. The idea is for the guardians to only find importance in leading and
protecting the city and not with their personal lives.
To be apart of the guardian class, one must participate in extraneous education, physical activity and
must be virtuous and brave. The guardians in the just city are what are considered philosopher kings .
In book 5 of Republic, the ideology of a philosopher king is expanded upon:
Until philosophers rule as kings in their cities, or those who are nowadays called kings and leading
men become genuine and adequate philosophers so that political power and philosophy become
throughly blended together, while the numerous natures that now pursue either one exclusively are
compelled not to do so, cities will have no rest from evils..nor..the human race. (Republic, 425)
Additionally, Socrates provides the Allegory of the Cave, an allegory that represents that philosophers
struggle to convince the average person of the true forms. Plato believes that the average population is
to ignorant to govern themselves. Which bring Plato to the argument that people have to be pre
destined to be apart of this ruling class, and not anyone can just become a philosopher king; stating

The Portrayal of Women in Advertising Essay
Within this essay I plan to discuss the portrayal of women in contemporary advertising and focus
around the ideologies of the male gaze according to Laura Mulvey. Laura Mulvey is a feminist film
theorist commonly known for her controversial essay, visual pleasure and narrative cinema written in
1973. This piece went on to be published in the influential British film journey screen. (Hein,2008)
Her written views have achieved to shift the perception of film theories conventional structure known
as psychoanalytic, which were written about by Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan.
Lacan was to have primarily came up with the theory and was originally identified as the gaze . His
use was to define the anxious state that derives with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Hein,2008) It s been undeniable that advertisement companies have had more opportunities to use
females for the face of branding and objectification.
The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty is a worldwide marketing campaign. The aim of the campaign is
to create a world where beauty is a source of confidence, and not anxiety. The campaign also wants to
help the next generation of women develop a positive relationship with the way they look. Throughout
their advertisements dove have used a variety of women who have a various range of body sizes, skin
colours, heights and ethical backgrounds. Dove uses the colour white significantly often dressing their
models in white underwear or clothes. More than so using white backgrounds and backdrops which
seem to mimic their usual product colours packaging and advertising theme. White usually
symbolizing the message of purity, comfort and happiness or is often seen as the colour of a virgin.
The use of the selection of women compared to regular stereotypical models gives the viewer a
reinforced purpose to empathize with the campaign. Dove has used various women, as this doesn t
narrow their target market when advertising. The use of variety broadens their campaign in order to
gain a response and interest from their market buyers, which are generally women.
The women throughout this advertisement are stood very closely together with

Damodaran on Capital and Operating Leases
Dealing with Operating Leases in Valuation Aswath Damodaran Stern School of Business 44 West
Fourth Street New York, NY 10012 adamodar@stern.nyu.edu
Abstract
Most firm valuation models start with the after tax operating income as a measure of the operating
income on a firm and reduce it by the reinvestment rate to arrive at the free cash flow to the firm.
Implicitly, we assume that the operating expenses do not include any financing expenses (such as
interest expense on debt). While this assumption, for the most part, is true, there is a significant
exception. When a firm leases an asset, the accounting treatment of the expense depends upon whether
it is categorized as an operating or a capital lease. Operating lease expenses are ... Show more content

These leases are called combination leases. Accounting For Leases The effects of leasing an asset on
accounting statements will depend on how the lease is categorized by the Internal Revenue Service
(for tax purposes) and by generally accepted accounting standards (for measurement purposes). Since
leasing an asset rather than buying it substitutes lease payments as a tax deduction for the payments
that would have been claimed as tax deductions by the firm if had owned the asset (depreciation and
interest expenses on debt), the IRS is wary of lease arrangements designed purely to
speed up tax deductions. Some of the issues the IRS considers in deciding whether lease payments
are tax deductible include the following: Are the lease payments on the asset spread out over the life
of the asset or are they accelerated over a much shorter period? Can the lessee continue to use the
asset after the life of the lease at preferential rates or nominal amounts? Can the lessee buy the asset at
the end of the life of the lease at a price well below market? If lease payments are made over a period
much shorter than the asset s life and the lessee is allowed either to continue leasing the asset at a
nominal amount or to buy the asset at a price below market, the IRS may view

Leishmaniasis Essay
Leishmaniasis
The Sting of The Sand Fly
By Jared Yeazell
Admittedly, since the beginning of time, disease has played a drastic role in the history of society. It
has affected economic conditions, wars, and natural disasters. The impact of any disease can be far
greater than some far better known catastrophes. In 1918, an epidemic of influenza swept the globe,
killing between 20 million and 40 million people. Within a few months, more than 500,000 Americans
had died. This is a number far greater than the number of people killed during World War I, World War
II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Physicians in the Indian subcontinent would describe it as Kala Azar. More recently, evidence of the
cutaneous form of the disease was found in the Ecuador and Peru in the pre Inca potteries depicting
king lesions and deformed faces dating back to the first century AD. Additionally, 15th and 16th
century texts from the Inca period and from the Spanish colonial mention Valley Sickness, Andean
Sickness, or White Leprosy which are likely to be Cutaneous Leishmaniasis.
Following this a little further, Leishmaniasis is usually transmitted in many tropical and subtropical
countries, and is found in certain parts of about 88 countries. Currently, approximately 350 million
people are living in these areas. It affects as many as 12 million people worldwide, with around 2
million new cases each year. Leishmaniasis is also found through much of the Americas from northern
Argentina to southern Texas, though not in Uruguay or Chile, and has recently been shown to be
spreading to north Texas. During 2004, it is estimated that around 3,400 Colombian troops, operating
in the jungles near the south of the country, were infected with Leishmaniasis. Within Afghanistan,
Leishmaniasis occurs commonly due to bad sanitations and waste left uncollected in the streets.
Additionally, Leishmaniasis has been reported by U.S. troops stationed in Saudi Arabia and Iraq since
the Gulf War of 1990. Also, in some areas of southern Europe, Leishmaniasis is becoming an

Noises Off Play Essay
On Tuesday the twenty first of March my mother and I went to the beautiful San Francisco Playhouse,
to watch a play within a play called Noises Off! written by Michael Frayn. I originally had my
reservations about the play, without doing any research about the play ahead of time I didn t know
quite what to expect. I knew that it was a comedy and that it was about a second rate comedy troupe.
But I ended up being pleasantly surprised by it and really liked Noises Off! This play is a classic case
of a farce based off of plot complications, the interactions between the cast is what really makes it
enjoyable.
The San Francisco Playhouse is located on the second floor of the Kensington Hotel directly in the
center of San Francisco s theatre district. We sat in the balcony across from the Proscenium stage with
seating down below as well. With stage lighting, hanging from the ceiling and on the walls pointing at
the stage. The ceiling was made of wood with different patterns carved ... Show more content on

The play is three acts with one intermission and shows the first act of a fictional play called Nothing
On from three different nights on their ten week tour: the technical rehearsal, one night a month later,
and a final towards the end of the tour. With each new showing, we see the characters at different
stages and in different relations to each other. Which more than the script itself makes the show what
it is, a farce, a comedy riddled with plot complications; an unready crew, a relationship gone awry, and
finally a tired crew and props breaking and winding up in the wrong hands at the wrong time. This
play while a simple one is something that almost anyone can enjoy and leaves one laughing in the end.
So while it has no life lesson or political affirmation to leave one thinking about in the end it s just
what is needed in this day and

This balance has been thrown off by many different things. Water seems to be one of the biggest problems with this offset balance. Water is a magic liquid keeping all of life thriving. Humans drink and use water, plants use water, water is used in everyday life, and it s slowly being taken away. In the future, there will be no water left to sustain life on earth. Ground water is a very important part of our fresh water supply and yet, it s depleting at a faster rate than what can be replenished. According to Kally Worm Groundwater is the second largest reserve of freshwater on earth. It also makes up 40% of the freshwater used in the U.S. alone. Some people lie to protect other people, while others lie to benefit themselves like maintaining the perfect image they care so much about. However, lying is completely unjustified unless you re protecting yourself or someone else from danger. This idea can be further proven with evidence from a variety of articles. To begin, many people believe that lying is unjustified, like German philosopher Immanuel Kant. Although, people agree with this statement, others may disagree. If they cannot relate to what happens, they at least know the problem that the character is struggling with or is trying to overcome. In life to get past a problem, people might have to change or develop to figure out a solution. In the book, The Scarlet Letter, a woman named Hester Prynne goes against her husband, Roger Chillingworth, and commits a sin that is forbidden in this community. Some of the townspeople believed she had cut her hair off because she started always having it up. She starts to look ladylike again when she is in the forest with Dimmesdale. Hester said she had to stay in Boston to face what she had done but being with Dimmesdale changed her mind. She thought Dimmesdale and her could move away from all of their sin `and start fresh. Another reason why Hester wanted to move away with Dimmesdale is so Pearl can have a father figure in her life. In vast London or, surely, in Germany...thou wouldst be beyond his power and knowledge (Hawthorne 218). Another way Hester grows is her choice of going with the Black Man. Hester would have gone with the Black Man to get away from all her troubles. Since they did not take Pearl away from her, Hester stayed and Pearl changed her view on life. Had they taken her from me, I would have willingly have gone with thee into the forest (Hawthorne 129). One of the changes that occur since she has gotten the Scarlet Letter is her view of people. She understands and has the knowledge of other s sins but the downfall is she loses faith. The last change she goes through is her needing to wear the Scarlet Letter. Townspeople say she may, she does take it off privately in the forest (Johnson 133). At first, Hester believes she must wear the Scarlet Letter and if it gains another meaning or just falls off then it is okay not to wear it. Dynamite fishing is particularly used near Tanzania, because fishermen find it easier to catch fish by killing them and the letting them float to the surface. Rather than them using a net, because it would either snag on the coral reef or miss all the fishes. The dynamite technique consists of throwing any type of dynamite or waterproof exploding object, into the water, waiting for it to reach the coral reef (home to the fishes). Paddling away from the explosive, then pushing the button which will explode the coral reef. Last, you collect the dead fish that float to the top of the water, because their air bladders cause them to become resilient. Some fishermen use dynamite fishing at night to catch even more fish, which may sound weird because they can t see anything at night. • 23. Afghanistan Culture Vs American Culture Essay Afghanistan has gone through centuries of turmoil, being controlled by different groups throughout its entire history. Starting with Indo Europeans, to Persians, and Greek power with Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC. India then had an influence, and in the 7th century the Islamic empire came to power. The European Dark Ages was the time of the Mongol Khanates in Afghanistan, with most of Afghanistan in the Persian Ilkhanate, and the northeastern peninsula in the Chagatai Khanate. This is where the Hazara ethnicity is believed to have originated (GALE|CX183...), which makes sense considering Amir s descriptions of Hassan. Amir s name is itself an example, in Hebrew meaning branch (Name, Meaning, and Biblical Context of Amir), and in Arabic meaning ruler or prince (Amir). Their food is a distinct melange of Indian, Chinese, Persian, and Middle Eastern elements, with naan at every meal, and a mild palate of spices(GALE|CX340...). Clothing is much the same cultural melange. Men wear turbans, which are present in both Indian and Islamic culture, and women wear chadris or simply a dress with trousers and a shawl over their head, again mirroring the dress of the Middle East and India(GALE|CX183...). • 24. The Role Of The Puritans The Puritans The Puritans were a group of people who were set out to get away from the British colony. They came into America to start a new life set apart from their past experiences in a monarch society. Their intentions were to purify the churches of England of their Catholic way. They are a group who worship the Bible. They expect all other Puritans to know their Ten Commandments. They are one of the first groups to inhabit America. The first actual people were the Native Americans and then the Pilgrims. There is a difference between the pilgrims and the puritans. The difference is that the pilgrims came to America to get away from the Church of England and be separate. They want to separate because they believe that England is violating the rules of the Bible. The Puritans also came to get away from the church because they believed that the church in England still needed further reform. That is why they started their own church in America, so they can make their own rules and be free. The play is about the group of puritans who came to start their church in Salem. In the beginning, there was little talk of witchcraft (Wiggins, 2012). People were starting to grow suspicious of Parris because his slave and niece and a couple other girls were dancing in the woods (Wiggins, 2012). Also his daughter was in a coma and would not wake up. Eventually he decided to call in Hale, who is a professional with witchcraft, to determine what was going on. Although he was said to be professional, later on we come to find out that he was starting to think he was wrong but he keeps that to himself (Wiggins, 2012). Then towards the end after there had been many deaths, he decides to tell them that they are innocent. The judge tells him that many have been hung already, so they cannot stop now because that would be unfair. What this passage says is, they are a group who believes in the bible and worship the bible, and they are strict on witchcraft (Wiggins, 2012). If somebody accuses someone of witchcraft, the only way to live is to confess that you are working with the devil. What is clear, is that leadership is a complicated concept. Henry David Thoreau and Niccolo Machiavelli are two men who have influenced some of the most influential people in the world, as the two were writing to different audiences, it s easy to see why their ideologies might clash or unite; Henry Thoreau and Niccolo Machiavelli both use an abundant amount of rhetorical strategies in both of their stories, including ethos, pathos, and logos; both of the stories also have their fair share of differences. The main rhetorical device in The Prince is logos. Nearly every sentence from the passage could be considered logical. Stations like Deland, Inverness, High Springs and Canal Point differed little from the expected mean, while Marathon Shores and Niceville deviated noticeably. This deviation, however, is chiefly explained by the stations locations and the patterns of rainfall associated with those positions. Deland, Inverness and Canal Point, for example, are situated much closer to the coast when compared to High Springs, and they exhibit a greater total annual precipitation rate of 53.72 inches as opposed to High Spring s 52.27 inches and a greater annual monthly mean of 4.48 inches compared to the 4.36 inches of High Springs. While relatively small, this variance among precipitation rates is still great enough to confirm the claim that most of the time, at least, stations located closer to the coast experience overall higher mean monthly and mean annual precipitation rates. Using the data collected solely from the selected six stations, a possible correlation is unclear between the amount of precipitation received and the number of hurricane strikes within a given area despite the claim made in the conceptual model. Another example of the rigidness of the colony was that if a person were to miss a sermon without just cause, they were to be placed in a pillory and have their ear nailed to it. Simplicity was a key element in worship as there were no candles, religious ritual, or decoration. Emphasis was solely placed on the sermon. Instead of thinking, Why would anyone allow something to become so disgusting? , I think about how the leaves and the roots refused to go away. The shoots continued to hang, low and in the way; the leaves and roots continued to make their presence known by giving off the strong smell of decomposing matter. After reading the poem, I m still not 100% sure on what the theme is. There was a shift from negative to positive in the last three lines, and lots of imagery. Even then the poem still comes across as abstract and slightly vague. Maybe, in writing this, they are accepting that those memories will never go away, but they don t define who they are. Amusement parks keep building faster and more complex roller coasters, but the fundamental principles at work remain the same. A roller coaster is like train. It consists of a series of connected cars that move on tracks. But unlike a passenger train, a roller coaster has no engine or power source of its own. For most of the ride, a roller coaster is moved only by the forces of inertia and gravity. If the track tilts up, gravity applies a downward force on the back of the coaster, so it decelerates. The track begins with a steep climp, building up potential energy in the coaster car. The rest of the track s hills, valleys, twists and turns are to change the built up energy back and forth between potential energy and kinetic energy. As the train moves, it gradually loses energy to friction until it reaches the end of the ride. There are two major types of roller coasters, which are defined by what their tracks are made out of: wooden and tubular steel. The tracks of wooden roller coasters are a little like traditional railroad tracks. The metal wheels of the cars roll on a flat metal strip, about 4 to 6 inches across. This strip is bolted to a running track made out of laminated wood. In most coasters, the car wheels have the same flanged design as the wheels of a train (the inner part of the wheel has a wide lip that keeps the car from rolling off the side of the track). The car also has another set of wheels that runs underneath the track. This keeps the cars from flying up into the air. He believed that kings must be those among them who have proved best both in philosophy and where war is concerned. (Republic, 491) and that these philosopher kings were the only people fit to rule a government, or the government would be doomed to fail. Aristotle is highly critical of Plato and his ideal constitution but he does find a similar form of ruling class to be ideal. He believes, in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They hold the job of protecting the city and well as making all of the diplomatic decisions. They cannot bother themselves with wordy possessions, like property or family and must live in communes with the other guardians. The idea is for the guardians to only find importance in leading and protecting the city and not with their personal lives. To be apart of the guardian class, one must participate in extraneous education, physical activity and must be virtuous and brave. The guardians in the just city are what are considered philosopher kings . In book 5 of Republic, the ideology of a philosopher king is expanded upon: Until philosophers rule as kings in their cities, or those who are nowadays called kings and leading men become genuine and adequate philosophers so that political power and philosophy become throughly blended together, while the numerous natures that now pursue either one exclusively are compelled not to do so, cities will have no rest from evils..nor..the human race. (Republic, 425) Additionally, Socrates provides the Allegory of the Cave, an allegory that represents that philosophers struggle to convince the average person of the true forms. Plato believes that the average population is to ignorant to govern themselves. Which bring Plato to the argument that people have to be pre destined to be apart of this ruling class, and not anyone can just become a philosopher king; stating someone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Hein,2008) It s been undeniable that advertisement companies have had more opportunities to use females for the face of branding and objectification. The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty is a worldwide marketing campaign. The aim of the campaign is to create a world where beauty is a source of confidence, and not anxiety. The campaign also wants to help the next generation of women develop a positive relationship with the way they look. Throughout their advertisements dove have used a variety of women who have a various range of body sizes, skin colours, heights and ethical backgrounds. Dove uses the colour white significantly often dressing their models in white underwear or clothes. More than so using white backgrounds and backdrops which seem to mimic their usual product colours packaging and advertising theme. White usually symbolizing the message of purity, comfort and happiness or is often seen as the colour of a virgin. The use of the selection of women compared to regular stereotypical models gives the viewer a reinforced purpose to empathize with the campaign. Dove has used various women, as this doesn t narrow their target market when advertising. The use of variety broadens their campaign in order to gain a response and interest from their market buyers, which are generally women. The women throughout this advertisement are stood very closely together with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Damodaran on Capital and Operating Leases Dealing with Operating Leases in Valuation Aswath Damodaran Stern School of Business 44 West Fourth Street New York, NY 10012 adamodar@stern.nyu.edu Abstract Most firm valuation models start with the after tax operating income as a measure of the operating income on a firm and reduce it by the reinvestment rate to arrive at the free cash flow to the firm. Implicitly, we assume that the operating expenses do not include any financing expenses (such as interest expense on debt). While this assumption, for the most part, is true, there is a significant exception. When a firm leases an asset, the accounting treatment of the expense depends upon whether it is categorized as an operating or a capital lease. Operating lease expenses are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These leases are called combination leases. Accounting For Leases The effects of leasing an asset on accounting statements will depend on how the lease is categorized by the Internal Revenue Service (for tax purposes) and by generally accepted accounting standards (for measurement purposes). Since leasing an asset rather than buying it substitutes lease payments as a tax deduction for the payments that would have been claimed as tax deductions by the firm if had owned the asset (depreciation and interest expenses on debt), the IRS is wary of lease arrangements designed purely to speed up tax deductions. Some of the issues the IRS considers in deciding whether lease payments are tax deductible include the following: Are the lease payments on the asset spread out over the life of the asset or are they accelerated over a much shorter period? Can the lessee continue to use the asset after the life of the lease at preferential rates or nominal amounts? Can the lessee buy the asset at the end of the life of the lease at a price well below market? If lease payments are made over a period much shorter than the asset s life and the lessee is allowed either to continue leasing the asset at a nominal amount or to buy the asset at a price below market, the IRS may view ... • 44. Leishmaniasis Essay Leishmaniasis The Sting of The Sand Fly By Jared Yeazell Admittedly, since the beginning of time, disease has played a drastic role in the history of society. It has affected economic conditions, wars, and natural disasters. The impact of any disease can be far greater than some far better known catastrophes. In 1918, an epidemic of influenza swept the globe, killing between 20 million and 40 million people. Within a few months, more than 500,000 Americans had died. This is a number far greater than the number of people killed during World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Physicians in the Indian subcontinent would describe it as Kala Azar. More recently, evidence of the cutaneous form of the disease was found in the Ecuador and Peru in the pre Inca potteries depicting king lesions and deformed faces dating back to the first century AD. Additionally, 15th and 16th century texts from the Inca period and from the Spanish colonial mention Valley Sickness, Andean Sickness, or White Leprosy which are likely to be Cutaneous Leishmaniasis. Following this a little further, Leishmaniasis is usually transmitted in many tropical and subtropical countries, and is found in certain parts of about 88 countries. Currently, approximately 350 million people are living in these areas. It affects as many as 12 million people worldwide, with around 2 million new cases each year. Leishmaniasis is also found through much of the Americas from northern Argentina to southern Texas, though not in Uruguay or Chile, and has recently been shown to be spreading to north Texas. During 2004, it is estimated that around 3,400 Colombian troops, operating in the jungles near the south of the country, were infected with Leishmaniasis. Within Afghanistan, Leishmaniasis occurs commonly due to bad sanitations and waste left uncollected in the streets. Additionally, Leishmaniasis has been reported by U.S. troops stationed in Saudi Arabia and Iraq since the Gulf War of 1990. Also, in some areas of southern Europe, Leishmaniasis is becoming an ... • 45. Noises Off Play Essay On Tuesday the twenty first of March my mother and I went to the beautiful San Francisco Playhouse, to watch a play within a play called Noises Off! written by Michael Frayn. I originally had my reservations about the play, without doing any research about the play ahead of time I didn t know quite what to expect. I knew that it was a comedy and that it was about a second rate comedy troupe. But I ended up being pleasantly surprised by it and really liked Noises Off! This play is a classic case of a farce based off of plot complications, the interactions between the cast is what really makes it enjoyable. The San Francisco Playhouse is located on the second floor of the Kensington Hotel directly in the center of San Francisco s theatre district. We sat in the balcony across from the Proscenium stage with seating down below as well. With stage lighting, hanging from the ceiling and on the walls pointing at the stage. The ceiling was made of wood with different patterns carved ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The play is three acts with one intermission and shows the first act of a fictional play called Nothing On from three different nights on their ten week tour: the technical rehearsal, one night a month later, and a final towards the end of the tour. With each new showing, we see the characters at different stages and in different relations to each other. Which more than the script itself makes the show what it is, a farce, a comedy riddled with plot complications; an unready crew, a relationship gone awry, and finally a tired crew and props breaking and winding up in the wrong hands at the wrong time. This play while a simple one is something that almost anyone can enjoy and leaves one laughing in the end. So while it has no life lesson or political affirmation to leave one thinking about in the end it s just what is needed in this day and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
