Summary Of Hills Like White Elephants By Ernest Hemingway
Sabrina Good
English 102
Ms. Vetro
29 September 2015
Importance of Setting in Hills like White Elephants Ernest Hemingway s short story Hills like white
Elephants is a minimalistic story about a young American girl named Jig and her lover, an American
man. Throughout the story, Hemmingway uses an abundant amount of dialogue so the reader can
interpret that Jig and the man are contemplating some decision. Arguably, the setting is the most
important aspect of Hills like White Elephants , and Ernest Hemingway uses setting subtly but
effectively to emphasize the decision they are contemplating, which is abortion. Jig and the man are at
a train station in Barcelona across the Ebro River, drinking beers, and discussing frantically and
anxiously whether they should proceed with the abortion. Jig does not agree with having an abortion,
although she does not directly say so. The American, on the other hand, thinks that the abortion will be
the answer to their problems and tries to convince Jig of that. Hemingway highlights three elements of
the story s setting: the train station, the overbearing heat, and the contrasting sides of the valley, to
show the couple s conflict and the difficulties of resolving their decision. First, Hemingway uses a
train station as the setting to show that the man and Jig have a problem, and they are having a hard
time trying to solve this problem. Hemingway wants to emphasize that the man and Jig are at a
crossroad, because they are indecisive

Personality Traits And The Presidential Election Essay
Hunter Garner Professor Thompson PSY 150.4142 8 November, 2016 Personality Traits and the
Presidential Election Will we be Stronger Together or Make America Great Again Unless you have
been living under a rock for the past two years, the United States of America has an election coming
up on the eighth of November. This campaign has gotten ugly. There has been fighting, rioting,
accusations of improper conduct, and a whole heap of other things between the two political parties.
Some people would argue that our country is divided more now than ever in history. On the
Democratic side, you have Senator Hillary Clinton. She has the motivation of becoming America s
first female president. Over on the Republican side, you have Donald Trump, a billionaire, real estate
mogul, businessman. These two candidates have two very different backgrounds. Hillary Clinton has
been in the political arena since 1976. She was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2001 and was appointed
as the U.S. Secretary of State in 2009. Donald Trump, on the other hand, has never held any kind of
political office. He got into real estate in 1971 and has since then made the Trump name synonymous
with real estate development. With their backgrounds being as different as they are, their personalities
are just as different. Huffington Post polled 1,000 people asking them to describe Clinton and Trump
in just one word. For Clinton, the top words used were liar/lying, dishonest, crook/crooked,

Winesburg Ohio Critical Analysis Essay
Written by Sherwood Anderson in 1919, Winesburg, Ohio, a collection of short stories, allows us to
enter the alternately complex, lonely, joyful, and strange lives of the inhabitants of the small town of
Winesburg, Ohio. While each character finds definition through their role in the community, we are
witness to the individual struggle each faces in trying to reconcile their secret life within. A perfect
example of two characters are Alice Hindman and Enoch Robinson. The loneliness and illusion that
encompass the lives of Alice Hindman and Enoch Robinson are the result of the discrepancy between
their own capacity for intimacy and affection and the inability of others to truly understand them. ...

Alice holds on to Ned and his promised love, even though was full of illusions, as an absolute truth.
I want to avoid being so much alone. If I am not careful I will grow unaccustomed to being around
people. (Anderson 118). Thus she joins new groups and attempts to recreate ties to her community.
However, she is unable to pass beyond her limiting life denying truth. A perfect example of this is not
even considering any type of relationship with Will Hurley, who she had met at a Church group. Alice
reaches the point of loneliness by the end which had been described in the beginning because,
regardless of her attempts to move on, her search from communal bonds and humanity had been
fruitless .
In the short story, Loneliness , Enoch Robinson also lives a life of illusions and loneliness. The story
of Enoch is in fact the story of a room almost more than it is the story of a man. (Anderson 168). The
room and its inhabitants are applied to Enoch and his mysterious, illusional character. As Enoch grew
up in Winesburg, his mother s house lay dark because all the window blinds were kept closed. Enoch
was described as a quiet, dense child. Enoch s home symbolizes his personality and his outlook
toward others. Enoch would walk top school with his nose in a book, not seeing the passing traffic.
The darkness of his home is reflected in his character. As Enoch moves to New

Amphotericin B Research Paper
Sterols are categorized as organic molecules, specifically a lipid. A common trait a lipid has is it is
insoluble to water. The chemical structure includes four carbon fused molecules with an additional
oxygen molecule attached. The most known animal sterol is cholesterol. Cholesterol is fundamental to
the structure of the cell membrane. It also functions as a fat soluble in the body.
In order for amphotericin B to work, there must be sterols present. This is because it is susceptible to
sterols. A bacterial membrane does not contain sterols, which means it can t be used as an agent
against bacterial infection. The antibiotic amphotericin B is an antifungal drug because Fungi have

March 19th is celebrated as the Feast of St. Joseph. It began in the Middle Ages when there was a
drought in Sicily. The desperate people living there asked Joseph for rain in exchange for a huge meal
in his honor. Of course, the rains came and the land was thriving again. In keeping their promise, the
people prepared an enormous feast, beginning the tradition of the St. Joseph s Table and giving food to
the less fortunate. Today, many churches and organizations still host St. Joseph s Tables, in which
parishioners or members prepare and donate large amounts of food, all meat less items. The Italians do
believe in the supernatural. Many general supernatural beliefs of the Catholic Church are intertwined
with older beliefs. An example is Sicily, in which, Arabic and Greek influences have blended with
popular Spanish beliefs and been incorporated into Catholicism. They have beliefs in the evil eye,
charms, spells, messages through dreams, and various other types of omens. They believed in witches
with powers and anti witches. Many of the beliefs have died out with the knowledge of the modern
age. The people of the capital of Italy, Rome, do not believe in one single all powerful god. Instead,
they believe in many. To the Romans, religion was less a spiritual experience than a contractual
relationship between humanity and the forces controlling the existence of people. Some Italians

Brazil and Privatization Essay
Brazil and Privatization The earliest inhabitants of Brazil were the Indians. However, the country s
recorded history begins with the arrival of the Portuguese in 1500. The Portuguese sailor Pedro
Alvares Cabral visited the continent we call South America, eight years after Columbus arrived in
America. Portuguese settlers followed, calling the new colony Brazil, after the brazilwood tree that
they extracted red dye from. The Portuguese did not bring prosperity and progress to the Indians.
Instead, they unintentionally infected and killed thousands of Indians with diseases such as measles
and smallpox. The growing number of settlers spurred the exploration of Brazil. Frontiersmen called

Brazil s national language is Portuguese. Like the United States English differs from England, Brazil

Analysis Of The Poem The Chimney Sweeper
Blake s poem The Chimney Sweeper is considered to be one of his finest, yet contradictory works of
his life, as he provides a negative social perspective on the topic of child labour. Assisted through the
use of various poetic techniques such as anecdotes, biblical illusion, symbolism, euphemism,
metaphors, and rhyme, Blake was able to assertively convey his protest towards the laws against the
use of young children in the British workforce. The theme of child innocence is also the other main
explored topic throughout this poem, as it is also in a majority of Blake s writing, as well as a common
subject touched on by a majority of The Romantics. The first stanza of the poem highlights how the
children that were apprenticed by their parents to sweepers were of such a young age, historically
documented to be as young as 5 years old. This is demonstrated by the line my father sold me while
yet my tongue, Could scarcely cry weep! weep! weep! weep! this stanza protesting social issues such
as child labour as well as involuntary servitude. Blake is able to express this point more effectively
through anecdotes, as Blake describes the life of a boy, the narrator, whose mother dies at an early age
and is then sold into chimney sweeping by his father. Imagery is another technique used, as the
narrator not metaphorically, but literally, sleeps in/on the black soot he works in, as chimney sweepers
were known to sleep on the bags of soot they swept during the day. In

Gender Dynamics Within Iran — Offside Film
The Gender Dynamics Within Iran Throughout the various texts and films we observed this semester,
there were a multitude of underlying themes associated with each. These themes do not live in a
textual or film related vacuum, but rather offer major implications on given Middle Eastern cultures.
In the fictional film Offside, directed by Jafar Panahi, he decides to zero in on the complex culture
within Iran. He illustrates the culture within Iran by employing the 2006 World Cup qualifying soccer
match between Iran and Bahrain as a metaphor of the various social dynamics attached to this sporting
event and the country as a whole. That said, there are numerous underlying themes associated with
this film. In this paper, however, I will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

and tries to help her as he seems to be legitimately worried for her wellbeing. Also, the ticker scalper
fretfully asks the if she know[s] what they ll do if they catch [her]? (Panahi). This implies the public
perception of the military s enforcement of this law is extremely strict and violating it is very much
unsafe. However, the actions of the soldiers in their treatment of the girls suggests otherwise. At the
end of the movie, the girls and soldiers are celebrating with all the Iranian people in the streets after

symbolizing fear tactics practiced by the government in order to promote law abiding citizens. The
soldier who appears to be in the leadership position is greatly concerned with going on military leave

detaining these girls, he is concerned with moving back to his village and taking care of his family.
The only reason he is detaining the girls is because [he] [has] responsibilities and [he ll] be punished if

Vision and values
Leithwood and Jantzi argue the ability to articulate a clear vision is an essential attribute for school
leaders (2008, p. 507). Goal setting is a powerful motivator for change and when leaders are able to
clearly communicate inspiration vision to those they lead, it is possible to harness this motivation to
bring about school improvement in student learning (Leithwood Jantzi, 2008, p.507). Clearly defined
goals encourage school community to contribute to common goals and also streamlines decision
making as only options that align with the vision need to be considered (Hallinger, 2010, p.129).
When discussing research into high performing schools, Matthews argues, Clear pupil centred vision
and purpose ensured pupils reached their potential. Maximising young people s well being and
achievements was at the heart of these schools (2010, p.9). The inclusion of vision in the APSP is
substantiated by research evidence gathered for at least the last 40

The Psychic Medium

medium. The term psychic medium refers to a person thought to have the ability to communicate with
the spirits of the dead or with agents of another world or dimension through extra sensory perception
or paranormal powers. While a medium will always be psychic, a psychic is not always a medium.
The main objective of a mediums work is to prove survival of the human personality or spirit after

It all began when the Greek philosophers got into the habit of questioning nature, raising doubts about
everything. Sacred forms of experience were scorned and disparaged and eventually a certain kind of
science came to dominate our thinking; the old wisdom traditions were forced to take a back seat.
Of course, it s easy to tote up the pluses of Science, which has freed us from ignorance and
superstition, cleared the way to mastering the forces of nature, extended life and made things
comfortable for the affluent in capitalist societies. On the other hand, according to the official view,
consciousness peeps out momentarily, and is destined to vanish forever after death. Science has torn
down the ancient myths, and made the implausibility of life after death an article of faith.
The effects of these phenomena have a great impact on human society. When a mother loses a child it
is always a tragedy, but when there are a lot of unanswered questions relating to his/her death, the help
of a medium can lead to or bring closure to the family, enabling them to move forward. Most people
mourning the loss of a loved one are in an extremely vulnerable state, yearning for answers to
questions that one can no longer answer. If we could definitively answer these questions, the human
race would be that much stronger.

Operational and legislative developments in Screening
The introduction of X ray screening came to be as a response to the hijackings of Dawson s Field on
September 6, 1970 (Kazda amp; Caves, 2007). Acts of terrorism manifested by the PFLP group
(Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine) orchestrated the hijackings of various passenger flights
from operators including Pan America, TWA, Swiss Air and BOAC. The PFLP diverted flights to
Dawson s Field, Jorden (with the exception of Pan America B747 commandeered toward Cairo)
holding hostages for political reasons. The operational practices of screening in this era were mostly
basic hand held metal detectors, along with early versions of walk through metal detectors as the birth
of passenger detection. The conventional x ray systems introduced at this time were initially for carry
on baggage scanning, a system widely adopted by many airports. With increased usage, operators also
utilised conventional x rays in large quantities for hold checked baggage, manually searching a
minimum of 10% of all screened items for effective practices (Shanks amp; Bradley, 2004). Two years
after, in 1972, magnetometer type screening was practiced in airports with 100% of all carry on
baggage being checked for domestic shuttle flights in the United

Zechariah s The Riddle Of The Annunciation
With the initial exchange between Mary and the Angel resolved, this discussion now turns its attention
to the central point of the Annunciation passage, the announcement of Christ, and Mary s confusion at
this pronouncement. To truly understand that scriptural passage, it is necessary to discuss the possible
reasons for what has been called The Riddle of the Annunciation, that is, why a girl who is betrothed
to be married and, presumably, understands the origin of children, questions how the Angel s
announcement could pertain to her. The simplest explanation to this question is also the least
satisfying. This is that, for some reason, Mary is ignorant of the way children are conceived. This does
not seem to fit any reasonable reading of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He points out that the annunciation format itself generally requires an objecting question. This could
partially explain Zechariah s objection in the previous story in Luke which this is designed to parallel.
However, Landry goes on to note that such a clunky and unreasonable objection does not seem to fit.
Elsewhere, Luke does not hold himself so slavishly to formal patterns that he damages the flow of his
story. It seems that if Luke were slavishly following the formal pattern for an annunciation, he would
have picked an objection that would not be so confusing or even indecipherable to his reader. In fact,
Landry asserts with Schaberg that those who immediately jump to Luke simply slavishly following
the annunciation format have given up too soon on the logic of the story. This discussion agrees with
that conclusion; the literary solution ignores Luke s actual text and simply takes the easy solution to
sidestep rather than address this question. A rejection of the literary solution to the riddle is further
supported elsewhere in Luke s own Gospel, and these will be discussed later within the discussion of
solutions that reject historicity of the virgin birth

William Blake Essay example
William Blake William Blake was born in 1757, the third son of a London hosier. Blake lived in or
near to London, a city which dominates much of his work, whether as the nightmare London of the
Songs of Experience, or the London which Blake saw as the New Jerusalem , the kingdom of God on
earth. As the son of a hosier, a generally lower middle class occupation in late eighteenth century
London, he was brought up in a poor household, a preparation for the relative poverty in which he
would live for most of his life. He also received little formal schooling, which is all the more

From 1779 he was employed as an engraver for a local Bookseller, and Blake continued to earn an
often precarious living from contracted engraving until, with the help of his friend John Flaxman

be a successful enterprise. It is from this point, 1784, that Blake s career as an engraver poet prophet
began in earnest. Working with the help of his dedicated wife Catherine Boucher (the daughter of a
market gardener, whom he married in 1782), Blake divided his time between composing and

Biblical Analysis Of Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
Alexandria Harris
Mrs. Mitchell
AP Literature
16 November 2015
Biblical Analysis: Frankenstein
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley often refers to the bible on a number of occasions. However, it is worth
noting that many references used by Mary Shelley in Frankenstein can often be identified in Genesis.
Much like Genesis, the story of Frankenstein is a viable creation story. The book of Genesis first
explains the creation of man and woman, and also recounts the fall of humanity. Unlike Genesis,
Frankenstein begins with the fall of humanity, leading into the creation of man. Although it would be
simple to compare the novel to such non religious terms, the religious symbolism cannot be ignored in
Frankenstein. Many biblical references within Frankenstein refer to the creation story in the first book
of Genesis.
Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded
you, You shall not eat of it, cursed is the ground because of you (Genesis 3: 17 19). In the book of
Genesis, Adam and Eve are punished for taking from the tree of knowledge. The event that is
presented in Genesis involving Adam and Eve strongly correlates to the first volume of Frankenstein.
Driven by his mother s death, Frankenstein looks to science in order to combat the death and illness
that surrounds him. His acquisition of this scientifical knowledge leads to the creation of a horrible
being. By creating life, he is able to attain the knowledge and

With her experiments, she became the first woman in France to get a doctorate. Curie decided to
continue Henri Becquerel s experiments with X rays. She came up with the groundbreaking idea that
the rays were actually an atomic property. The paper she wrote reporting her discoveries had to be
presented through her professor because women weren t allowed to address the Academy of Sciences.
With this, she continued her work to find new elements. First, she found polonium, which is named
for her home country, and then she discovered radium. Pierre and Marie s greatest work was done in a
run down shed. They worked from 1898 to 1902. The Curies could have made a fortune if they
patented their process of extracting and refining radium, but they decided share their knowledge with
the world.
Marie Curie became the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize when the Curies shared the Nobel
Prize in Physics with Becquerel in 1903 for their work with radioactivity. In the 1900s, women still
had a relegated role in science. Marie Curie wasn t allowed to speak with her husband on stage at the
award ceremony and had to sit in the audience. Her mere presence was an affront to men. Some
members of the Nobel Prize committee even considered not including her in the prize at all, despite
the fact that she was largely responsible for the discovery.
She would later win a second Nobel Prize, this time in Chemistry, in 1911 for discovering the

General statement:
Mama understands the past and the significance of a family heritage. Her heritage including her

The character of Mama in the short story Everyday Use by Alice Walker endures through intense

The way the burning house, her stuck up sister, and society influenced Maggie make her unique in
relation to others. Maggie was so damaged from her home burning down that she turned into a meek
and undervalued young lady. Maggie is so unsure that her mother says she walks like a dog run over
by a car: chin on chest eyes on ground, feet in shuffle, ever since the fire that burned the other house
on the ground. This demonstrates that Maggie absence of self confidence make her frightened to look.
She imagines that on the off chance that she can t see the individuals around her, then they can t see
her. What s more, Maggie s discernible scars have impacted on the way she conducts herself. As
indicated by Mama, when she was pulling Maggie out of the fire, her arms were adhering, her hair
was smoking, and her dress was tumbling off her in minimal dark papery pieces. This is huge light of
the fact that indicates how much the flame really physically scarred her. This additionally clarifies
why she is so apprehensive about individuals seeing her. Maggie s apparent compressed version of
confirmation in herself is created basically by the fire. The barbaric way Maggie s sister, Dee, presents
herself awful impact on Maggie s certainly. At this point when Dee inquired as to whether she can

The Nile River, The Greatest River In The World
Egyptian civilization was one of the oldest in the world history. The Nile River placed the great role in
this civilization, and it led to great stupendous achievements. Nile river is one of the greatest rivers I
have seen in my whole life. Nile river is located in Cairo, which is the capital city of Egypt. It has
many reasons to make it one of the most important rivers in the world. I have visited Egypt many
times. and I have talked to a lot of Egyptian citizens, and they told me that Nile river is the longest
river in the world. Nile river is one of the most important rivers for me for three reasons; beauty
nature, friendly people, and the entertainment around the river. Firstly, the natural beauty is mysterious
and beautiful for me, because every part of the river it has different nature. The north of the river is
full of different trees which have given the river great view and nature. For example, palm sycamore
maple, and tamarisk. The south of the river is completely dry and dessert free of nature and what
makes it completely different from the north of the river and it is strange that the most of the tourism
is close to the south of the river and after searching for the cause I found that the Egyptian civilization
began from the south of the river and still the Egyptians stuck to civilization history; However, My
first trip to the river was ten years ago with my family and it became our greatest place ever. I went
there for a picnic with my family and I

Analysis Of The Phantom Of The Opera
This movie is one I ve came back to often, the acting, music, scenery, and the story itself is what
brought me back. I liked how every actor in this film not only fit their role, but also made it
believable. If they were to recast the actors today, I don t think they could find better actors to fit the
roles. Some of the roles in this are Viscount de Chagny Raoul played by Patrick Wilson, Christine
Daaé played by Emmy Rossum, The Phantom of the Opera Opera Ghost played by Gerard Butler,
these are just the main characters. The role of the Opera Ghost is played by Gerard Butler, his acting
was good which wasn t surprising I have seen some of his other roles and they were all well done also.
What surprised me the most how well he could sing. There any many characters that are seen
throughout the film, some supporting roles include Madame Giry played by Miranda Richardson, Meg
Giry played by Jennifer Ellison, Carlotta Giudicelli played by Minnie Driver, Gilles André played by
Simon Callow, Monsieur Lefèvre played by James Fleet, and Monsieur Reyer played by Murray
Melvin. There are of course extras. This movie is a musical that is mainly drama based, so not only
does it help keep the movie interesting, the music is good enough you could listen to it on its own. The
movie is set in an Paris Opera House named the Opera Populaire in 1870. The Opera Populaire is very
beautiful and huge. Christine gets a visit from The Angel of Music after her father s death, the angel

I. Abstract
The purpose of this water experiment is to compare two sources of waters and see if they would affect
the growth of beans. For the purpose of this test, multiple samples were implemented to gather results
with as much accuracy as possible. Every two days a study of our beans was conducted. Measuring
the growth/length of each bean. 40 samples were used. The team hypothesized that the water from
Foster Lake would grow plants faster than the water from Kanakadea Creek due to the bio diverse
nature of the lake and its inhabitants. The results gathered show a surprising find in this study.
II. Introduction
Water is the most natural thing we have on earth. It sustains many organisms and those organisms
depend on it almost daily. Plants are such organisms. For this study the focus is the growth of beans.
Over the course of two weeks my team and I conducted research comparing the two types of waters
that were selected and seeing if they had any significant differences in growing beans. The first week
was inconclusive due to bean rot and negligence. Test two led to a more constant observation of
growth and change of location. Results gathered from this experiment have shown a difference that
different waters may have on the growth of plants. Beans that consumed certain water sources

The Wage Gap Between Men And Women
In 2013, full time female employee s made only seventy eight cents of every dollar earned by men,
which means a wage gap of twenty two percent. Women are nearly half of the labor pool and are equal

April 14, 2015 marked Equal Pay Day this year, which shows how far into the new year the average
American woman would have to be employeed to earn what the average American man did last year.
Both genders see the lack of balance in the workplace. A lot of men and women believe America
needs to continue making changes to achieve eqaulity in the workplace. Accorging to the White
House, women working full time have to work nearly sixty more additional days, in order to earn what
men did at the end of last year. In 1980, the average woman would have had to work nearly three extra
months into May, just to catch up with men s earning s from the previous year (Patten, 2015). The pay
gap between men and women continues possibly because women put their careers on hold to care for
their families. Research shows that these types of choices can have a negative affect on long term
earnings. Approximately, four of ten mothers have taken a lot of time from work, which is thirty nine
percent. Approximately, forty two percent have reduced their work hours to care for a family member
or child. Also, twenty seven percent have quit work completely to care for family responsibilities and
even less men say the same. There is approximately twenty four percent of fathers that have taken a
lot of time off from work to care for family or children (Patten, 2015).

I hypothesize that the Spearmint gum will last longer.
The reason mint gum lasts longer is that mint is a very strong oil with a strong distinct flavor. The
flavor will simply last longer as it s a stronger taste. Although you may have thought that Juicy Fruit

Description Of An 11th Birthday Party
My 11th Birthday Party
Here I go, Splash! That was an epic cannonball. I was so excited when my 11th birthday rolled
around. I woke up, scrambled up the stairs and yelled everyone in the car NOW! We have a party to
get too. When we first got to the campsite at Yogi Bear, I got my bathing suit on and jumped in the
lake. When my friend, Harper, showed up we both got on the lake then we went to the JUMPING
PILLOWS! I love the jumping pillows although I did get banned from them when we left because I
was doing FLIPS! Oops. Finally, Karlie showed up eventually we all went to the jumping pillows and
jumped around with these boys that at first looked pretty cute but were real jerks. After we got back
we went swimming in the lake and my mom said that I had to help set up our tents before I could do
anything so she was sort of a fun killer. I got out of the water to help my mom when my mom gave me
a pack of water balloons which of course we blew up to throw at people.
I had invited one of my other friends, Elly she showed up after Karlie did. When all my friends were
there I finally go to open PRESENTS! I was so excited to open my present I could have died from an
excitement overdose. Everything became fuzzy and started spinning CanT bReaTh I m just kidding
but trust me it would have been bad. I vastly started tearing away at the gift wrap to get to the good
stuff it was like I was trying to get to Narnia.

Comparing the Works of Norman Rockwell and Gary Soto
Family happiness is something that many today focus on as an absolute requirement for happy and
healthy growth in children. And indeed, it is right that this should be so. In reality, however,
challenges such as poverty and racism often affect the happiness that families might experience. When
comparing the works created by Norman Rockwell and Gary Soto, however, it becomes clear that
family happiness is not so much dependent upon wealth as it is upon freedom of expression and
freedom from fear. At first glance, the family in Rockwell s painting appears quite happy, with the
father and mother both smiling at the sleepy children. The children also seem peaceful and warm in
their bed, and the room appears secure and solid against any elements that might attack from outside.
This is, however, where the sense of overprotection begins to reveal itself. The overprotected nature of
the children s life is revealed in several visual elements in the painting. First, and most obvious, the
mother leans over the children as she puts them to bed. The father also stands close, looking down at
them, with a fond smile on his face. While it is clear that they love their children, the parents physical
orientation towards their children can be said to hover. Another interesting element in this regard is
that the father accompanies the process of putting the children to bed. He stands next to his wife as she
works with the children. He does not help, but gives the impression that his

The Psychological Cost Of Children During The American...
Lt. Col. Dave Grossman is a former army Ranger, paratrooper, and west point psychology professor.
Grossman is a world renown expert in the field of human aggression and the psychology of combat
(Grossman et. al, 2007). In his book, On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War
and Society, he talks about non firing rate. Non firing rate is the percentage of soldiers who freeze up
during combat, and do not fire their weapon. There has been documentation of non firing rate dating
back to 1863, during the American Civil War. There is even documentation to prove that both World
War I and II soldiers displayed the same consistence in failing to fire their weapons; but why is this
important? The weapons had the proficiency to kill, but the soldier holding the weapon did not. All the
documentation of soldier s inability to fire their weapon indicates that there is a psychological power
greater than military training (Gorssman et. al., 1995). This force acts as a blockade, preventing man
from standing before man, and engaging in the conscious act of taking the life of a person. Even when
faced with the decision to kill the man standing before him, or be killed, evidence shows that man will
be killed before he kills (Grossman et. al., 1995). Thus, providing the evidence needed to indicate
humans are not born with the capability to kill. Engaging in combat has taken a tole on the mental
well being of the military service members.

Organizational Innovation From Different Leaderships style
Innovation is to create new ideas or add new information to original projects in order to improve the
function and services of an institution. Innovation also refers to remodeling a product, simplifying
processes and applying different strategies of management. Literally, innovation is the change that

Considerably compassion and system factors of a leadership style involve recognizing working values,
attitudes, dedication and organizational commitment. Accordingly, there are four dimensions of
leadership style; they are: high consideration and high system, this type of leader concerns about
achieving organizational goals and the subordinates needs. Positively this leadership style benefits
both the organization as well as employees. The leader has qualities that influence the organization
success. Secondly, low consideration and high system declares that leaders care about the achievement
of performance, but he/she does not consider the subordinates feelings; this leadership style is not
healthy for employees. A good leader has to be supportive, patience, flexible, empathic and so on.
Employees feelings influence their performance. Therefore, listening skills is an essential tool that a
leader has to use as needed it. Third, high consideration and low system refers to a leader s role and
employees participation in decision making. This is a great leadership style where a leader applies
his/her natural instincts by allowing employees to participate in decision making. As a result
employees feel that their work is worthy; thus, they get more engage on the job (Tien, Chao 2012).

Eugene Sandow s Bodybuilding And The Bodybuilding Industry
Eugene Sandow started bodybuilding in the late nineteenth century. He was known of his time to have
a great physique, and it drew many admirers. Known as The Father of Bodybuilding , he began the
bodybuilding industry by promoting competitions and selling exercise equipment. Today, the
bodybuilding industry is as big as ever as more people are interested in achieving their ideal physique.
The image of bodybuilders is still viewed negatively by the public. When people hear of
bodybuilding, they most often think of big, steroid abusing tools that are obsessed with gaining

bodybuilders, endured by writers who did not experience the lifestyle, is a moral transgression. It is a
moral transgression to write fictional accounts on bodybuilding because it is a form of art. It is an art

Using the scale of the moon and details of the surface of the planet, it was successfully communicated
how far the ship was from the ground. This sequence could have easily been shot straightforward and
would lack any excitement or dynamic. Johnston successfully create an interesting sequence through
varying the camera height and angle throughout the decent. The light colored Millennium Falcon is
always overlapping with some part of the dark void of space in each frame, causing it to be the focal
point of all shots. The texture of the planet becomes more recognizable as the ship moves closer to the
surface, communicating the changing distance between the ship and the planet. In addition to lack of
surface detail in the first 4 frames, the shape repetition changes from circular to organic and abstract.
This is a successful sequence due to the use of shape, value, and detail to communicate to the viewer
the story of the Millennium Falcon landing on a planet.
Two different sequences of two frames each, use similar techniques to communication the story. Both
sequences use the framing element of foreground environment and foreground figures to push focus to

T-Shirt In The Global Economy
In her book The Travels of a T Shirt in the Global Economy, Pietra Rivoli explores the journey that a
T shirt makes while being produced and the effects it has on the global economy. She begins by
explaining that the US continues to dominate in the cotton industry, even after 200 years. She
introduces the reader to Lubbock, Texas the cottenest city in the US (5). The author explains that US
domination in the cotton industry is due to a variety of reasons which she spends the rest of the

Mary Wollstonecraft Metaphors
~ The utilization of metaphors and similes throughout Mary Wollstonecraft s piece conveys the
argument that she poses to society. The added effect of the powerful metaphors incorporated into her
writing is evidently necessary in order to illuminate her main viewpoints. Mary Wollstonecraft
compares the way women act to mere animals and the way such children should be expected to act .
The comparison between mere animals and women depicts how society has stripped away women s
dignity by poorly educating them. She further explains that women are portrayed as acting like
children and are not able to act like stable adults in their relationships. To Wollstonecraft, women were
currently seen as ignorant as they would nickname God s creatures ... Show more content on

Mary Wollstonecraft adds on to her argument by comparing the way women were viewed as
insignificant objects of desire by their male counterparts. At the time, society crafted women into
physical entities for men that would provide pleasures for them at any time they wished. Without the
proper education, women could do little to prove themselves to be worth more than just objects. The
metaphor that Wollstonecraft utilized was key in advocating for the education of women as it
represented how they were defenseless and only seen to be slaves in the eyes of men. She comparison
is vital to the piece as she is stating how women were seen in her time and how there needed to be
reform in order to improve their stance in society. Moreover, she illuminates that once women short
lived bloom of beauty is over, they will be useless in their relationships. She compares the minimal
importance of beauty in a relationship of that of a flower. Beauty only gets women so far in a
relationship, and education will improve women s roles in the relationship. She presents the metaphor
to as a persuasive argument that may appeal to

Origins Of The Sport And The Battle For Integration Essay
Baseball has not always been the exciting, diverse, and traditional pastime as it is today. Before the
glory days of televised sports, was its murky past. America s pastime didn t reflect what the country
really represents at the core; a melting pot of people from different races and backgrounds. To
understand how race has had an effect on baseball, one must look at the sport s timeline. Starting from
conception to pivotal events that shaped the game today, one can really see how the balance of power
has shifted drastically in the game and has had an impact on our nation. Baseball started out as a
leisure activity and transformed into a business. The game of baseball truly had no borders. In this
paper, I will look at the origins of the sport and the battle for integration. I will also take a look at how
the minority communities were affected by the conception, involvement, and racism that surrounded
the sport.
Baseball s origins are difficult to trace. The widely accepted view that it originated in the late 1830 s
by Abner Doubleday has been totally debunked. The earliest indications of the sport were in England,
Germany, and France. Sandlot baseball dominated the middle of the 19th century until industry and
professional baseball came into its own. Although the records indicate it was more along the lines of a
form of cricket, the game, as we know it was entering its early stages. Along with the MLB, there was
the Caribbean league as well as the Negro league, and now the

Merrill s arguments in The Professionalization of Journalism against professionalizing journalism
What is a profession? The Oxford English Dictionary defines professions as that way of life/manner of
making a living that involves the application of a specialized knowledge of particular subjects, field,
or science to fee paying clientele. Examples of professions include nursing, architecture, medicine and
engineering.
Although journalism has some characteristics of a profession, for Merrill it cannot be considered a
profession due to the fact that journalists do not have a direct relationship with their clients, there are

16 December 2015 Over the course of this class I have learned things that I didn t know before and
developing as a writer. I learned different things with each of the assignments I submitted. I learned
things like how to develop my writing and how to transition my writing to flow better together. I
learned to correctly cite in text citations and I learned how to create a profile. Each of these things I
will carry with me as I continue to write for various classes or other reasons in the future and they will
continue to help me better myself as writer. The five student outcomes have helped me to better
myself by giving me guidelines to follow and to help me understand the assignments better. They ...

I then submitted my final draft to iNet. My topic for my research paper was technology s impact on
today s society. I talked about the positive and negative impacts technology has on our society
everyday and I was able to give evidence of my ideas with information I found when researching. I
explained that technology has helped with finding new ways to teach students including those with
disabilities and how it has helped to advance the health and medicinal field. I also explained some
downsides such as the addiction and absence of face to face interaction that come along with
technology. Each of my assignments for this class included revising and editing at the attempt to hand
in the best possible work. I made sure I read over my work before handing it in to assure that there
were little to no grammatical or spelling errors. My biggest struggle in this area was working on
transitions and organization throughout my assignments to make sure my paper flowed better as a
whole.
Conduct research, which uses traditional and electronic search techniques and integrates source
materials is the second student outcome. I used this a ton when writing my research paper as well as
many other assignments. Bianca Banova, author of the article The Impact of Technology on

Symbolism In A Pair Of Tickets
The setting and symbolism are great ways to evolve characters, reveal underlying connections, and
provide the reader with hints of meanings about the story and characters. The short story written by
Amy Tan, called A Pair of Tickets uses the setting, and symbolisms in the main characters self
discovery, reveal aspects of their lives to the readers, and relate things to a deeper meaning.
Throughout the story the main character, June May, develops immensely through the setting by
finding parts of herself she thought didn t exist, and strengthening the ties to her family while coming
to terms with the past. Developing the character through the setting starts right off the bat. While June
May lived in San Francisco, she constantly denied who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Colors play into the story as more than just a repeated symbol. From the beginning to the end of the
story the colors pink, green, brown, and yellow showed up. By looking at the meaning of colors in the
Chinese culture it can been seen that these colors represent the seasons of June Mays life and the
transformation that occurred within her. For starters, in past memories of her mother, when June May
was against her culture, she would include colors of pink which in traditional times in China did not
have a significant meaning; being color blind to the fact that lemon yellow and pale pink are not good
combinations for winter clothes (264). This is significant because of the nonsignificance of the color
pink, and how her heritage was insignificant to her at the time. Also, it s important to note the use of
pink clothing during the winter. Winter typically signifies death, and not much growth. These are the
case in the aspect of June May s ties to her heritage. Once June May begins her journey new colors
appear; all he is seeing outside of the train window is a sectioned field of yellow, green, and brown
(264). Green in China s culture means new beginnings, which is exactly what June May was
experiencing on her way to China, a new beginning into the life of the past and her family. Colors play
into the end of the story as a reflectance of the change that June May has gone through; The gray
green surface changes to the bright colors of our three images, sharpening and deepening all at once.
(276). This shows that before her transition occurred, her family pride was dull and at the start of its
path, but as it, the picture and her journey, developed, so did her ties to China, brightening,
sharpening, and

  • 4. Summary Of Hills Like White Elephants By Ernest Hemingway Sabrina Good English 102 Ms. Vetro 29 September 2015 Importance of Setting in Hills like White Elephants Ernest Hemingway s short story Hills like white Elephants is a minimalistic story about a young American girl named Jig and her lover, an American man. Throughout the story, Hemmingway uses an abundant amount of dialogue so the reader can interpret that Jig and the man are contemplating some decision. Arguably, the setting is the most important aspect of Hills like White Elephants , and Ernest Hemingway uses setting subtly but effectively to emphasize the decision they are contemplating, which is abortion. Jig and the man are at a train station in Barcelona across the Ebro River, drinking beers, and discussing frantically and anxiously whether they should proceed with the abortion. Jig does not agree with having an abortion, although she does not directly say so. The American, on the other hand, thinks that the abortion will be the answer to their problems and tries to convince Jig of that. Hemingway highlights three elements of the story s setting: the train station, the overbearing heat, and the contrasting sides of the valley, to show the couple s conflict and the difficulties of resolving their decision. First, Hemingway uses a train station as the setting to show that the man and Jig have a problem, and they are having a hard time trying to solve this problem. Hemingway wants to emphasize that the man and Jig are at a crossroad, because they are indecisive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Personality Traits And The Presidential Election Essay Hunter Garner Professor Thompson PSY 150.4142 8 November, 2016 Personality Traits and the Presidential Election Will we be Stronger Together or Make America Great Again Unless you have been living under a rock for the past two years, the United States of America has an election coming up on the eighth of November. This campaign has gotten ugly. There has been fighting, rioting, accusations of improper conduct, and a whole heap of other things between the two political parties. Some people would argue that our country is divided more now than ever in history. On the Democratic side, you have Senator Hillary Clinton. She has the motivation of becoming America s first female president. Over on the Republican side, you have Donald Trump, a billionaire, real estate mogul, businessman. These two candidates have two very different backgrounds. Hillary Clinton has been in the political arena since 1976. She was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2001 and was appointed as the U.S. Secretary of State in 2009. Donald Trump, on the other hand, has never held any kind of political office. He got into real estate in 1971 and has since then made the Trump name synonymous with real estate development. With their backgrounds being as different as they are, their personalities are just as different. Huffington Post polled 1,000 people asking them to describe Clinton and Trump in just one word. • 6. Winesburg Ohio Critical Analysis Essay Written by Sherwood Anderson in 1919, Winesburg, Ohio, a collection of short stories, allows us to enter the alternately complex, lonely, joyful, and strange lives of the inhabitants of the small town of Winesburg, Ohio. While each character finds definition through their role in the community, we are witness to the individual struggle each faces in trying to reconcile their secret life within. A perfect example of two characters are Alice Hindman and Enoch Robinson. The loneliness and illusion that encompass the lives of Alice Hindman and Enoch Robinson are the result of the discrepancy between their own capacity for intimacy and affection and the inability of others to truly understand them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Alice holds on to Ned and his promised love, even though was full of illusions, as an absolute truth. I want to avoid being so much alone. If I am not careful I will grow unaccustomed to being around people. (Anderson 118). Thus she joins new groups and attempts to recreate ties to her community. However, she is unable to pass beyond her limiting life denying truth. A perfect example of this is not even considering any type of relationship with Will Hurley, who she had met at a Church group. Alice reaches the point of loneliness by the end which had been described in the beginning because, regardless of her attempts to move on, her search from communal bonds and humanity had been fruitless . In the short story, Loneliness , Enoch Robinson also lives a life of illusions and loneliness. The story of Enoch is in fact the story of a room almost more than it is the story of a man. (Anderson 168). The room and its inhabitants are applied to Enoch and his mysterious, illusional character. As Enoch grew up in Winesburg, his mother s house lay dark because all the window blinds were kept closed. Enoch was described as a quiet, dense child. The chemical structure includes four carbon fused molecules with an additional oxygen molecule attached. The most known animal sterol is cholesterol. Cholesterol is fundamental to the structure of the cell membrane. It also functions as a fat soluble in the body. In order for amphotericin B to work, there must be sterols present. This is because it is susceptible to sterols. A bacterial membrane does not contain sterols, which means it can t be used as an agent against bacterial infection. • 11. Analysis Of The Poem The Chimney Sweeper Blake s poem The Chimney Sweeper is considered to be one of his finest, yet contradictory works of his life, as he provides a negative social perspective on the topic of child labour. Assisted through the use of various poetic techniques such as anecdotes, biblical illusion, symbolism, euphemism, metaphors, and rhyme, Blake was able to assertively convey his protest towards the laws against the use of young children in the British workforce. The theme of child innocence is also the other main explored topic throughout this poem, as it is also in a majority of Blake s writing, as well as a common subject touched on by a majority of The Romantics. The first stanza of the poem highlights how the children that were apprenticed by their parents to sweepers were of such a young age, historically documented to be as young as 5 years old. This is demonstrated by the line my father sold me while yet my tongue, Could scarcely cry weep! weep! weep! weep! this stanza protesting social issues such as child labour as well as involuntary servitude. Blake is able to express this point more effectively through anecdotes, as Blake describes the life of a boy, the narrator, whose mother dies at an early age and is then sold into chimney sweeping by his father. Imagery is another technique used, as the narrator not metaphorically, but literally, sleeps in/on the black soot he works in, as chimney sweepers were known to sleep on the bags of soot they swept during the day. In the fictional film Offside, directed by Jafar Panahi, he decides to zero in on the complex culture within Iran. Zechariah s The Riddle Of The Annunciation With the initial exchange between Mary and the Angel resolved, this discussion now turns its attention to the central point of the Annunciation passage, the announcement of Christ, and Mary s confusion at this pronouncement. To truly understand that scriptural passage, it is necessary to discuss the possible reasons for what has been called The Riddle of the Annunciation, that is, why a girl who is betrothed to be married and, presumably, understands the origin of children, questions how the Angel s announcement could pertain to her. The simplest explanation to this question is also the least satisfying. This is that, for some reason, Mary is ignorant of the way children are conceived. This could partially explain Zechariah s objection in the previous story in Luke which this is designed to parallel. However, Landry goes on to note that such a clunky and unreasonable objection does not seem to fit. Elsewhere, Luke does not hold himself so slavishly to formal patterns that he damages the flow of his story. It seems that if Luke were slavishly following the formal pattern for an annunciation, he would have picked an objection that would not be so confusing or even indecipherable to his reader. In fact, Landry asserts with Schaberg that those who immediately jump to Luke simply slavishly following the annunciation format have given up too soon on the logic of the story. This discussion agrees with that conclusion; the literary solution ignores Luke s actual text and simply takes the easy solution to sidestep rather than address this question. A rejection of the literary solution to the riddle is further supported elsewhere in Luke s own Gospel, and these will be discussed later within the discussion of solutions that reject historicity of the virgin birth ... Biblical Analysis Of Mary Shelley s Frankenstein Alexandria Harris Mrs. Mitchell AP Literature 16 November 2015 Biblical Analysis: Frankenstein Frankenstein by Mary Shelley often refers to the bible on a number of occasions. However, it is worth noting that many references used by Mary Shelley in Frankenstein can often be identified in Genesis. Much like Genesis, the story of Frankenstein is a viable creation story. The book of Genesis first explains the creation of man and woman, and also recounts the fall of humanity. Unlike Genesis, Frankenstein begins with the fall of humanity, leading into the creation of man. Although it would be simple to compare the novel to such non religious terms, the religious symbolism cannot be ignored in Frankenstein. Many biblical references within Frankenstein refer to the creation story in the first book of Genesis. Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, You shall not eat of it, cursed is the ground because of you (Genesis 3: 17 19). In the book of Genesis, Adam and Eve are punished for taking from the tree of knowledge. The event that is presented in Genesis involving Adam and Eve strongly correlates to the first volume of Frankenstein. I woke up, scrambled up the stairs and yelled everyone in the car NOW! We have a party to get too. When we first got to the campsite at Yogi Bear, I got my bathing suit on and jumped in the lake. When my friend, Harper, showed up we both got on the lake then we went to the JUMPING PILLOWS! I love the jumping pillows although I did get banned from them when we left because I was doing FLIPS! Oops. Finally, Karlie showed up eventually we all went to the jumping pillows and jumped around with these boys that at first looked pretty cute but were real jerks. After we got back we went swimming in the lake and my mom said that I had to help set up our tents before I could do anything so she was sort of a fun killer. I got out of the water to help my mom when my mom gave me a pack of water balloons which of course we blew up to throw at people. I had invited one of my other friends, Elly she showed up after Karlie did. When all my friends were there I finally go to open PRESENTS! • 30. Comparing the Works of Norman Rockwell and Gary Soto Family happiness is something that many today focus on as an absolute requirement for happy and healthy growth in children. And indeed, it is right that this should be so. In reality, however, challenges such as poverty and racism often affect the happiness that families might experience. When comparing the works created by Norman Rockwell and Gary Soto, however, it becomes clear that family happiness is not so much dependent upon wealth as it is upon freedom of expression and freedom from fear. At first glance, the family in Rockwell s painting appears quite happy, with the father and mother both smiling at the sleepy children. The children also seem peaceful and warm in their bed, and the room appears secure and solid against any elements that might attack from outside. This is, however, where the sense of overprotection begins to reveal itself. The overprotected nature of the children s life is revealed in several visual elements in the painting. First, and most obvious, the mother leans over the children as she puts them to bed. The father also stands close, looking down at them, with a fond smile on his face. While it is clear that they love their children, the parents physical orientation towards their children can be said to hover. Another interesting element in this regard is that the father accompanies the process of putting the children to bed. He stands next to his wife as she works with the children. He does not help, but gives the impression that his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Grossman is a world renown expert in the field of human aggression and the psychology of combat (Grossman et. al, 2007). In his book, On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society, he talks about non firing rate. Non firing rate is the percentage of soldiers who freeze up during combat, and do not fire their weapon. There has been documentation of non firing rate dating back to 1863, during the American Civil War. There is even documentation to prove that both World War I and II soldiers displayed the same consistence in failing to fire their weapons; but why is this important? The weapons had the proficiency to kill, but the soldier holding the weapon did not. All the documentation of soldier s inability to fire their weapon indicates that there is a psychological power greater than military training (Gorssman et. al., 1995). This force acts as a blockade, preventing man from standing before man, and engaging in the conscious act of taking the life of a person. Even when faced with the decision to kill the man standing before him, or be killed, evidence shows that man will be killed before he kills (Grossman et. al., 1995). Thus, providing the evidence needed to indicate humans are not born with the capability to kill. Engaging in combat has taken a tole on the mental well being of the military service members. The light colored Millennium Falcon is always overlapping with some part of the dark void of space in each frame, causing it to be the focal point of all shots. The texture of the planet becomes more recognizable as the ship moves closer to the surface, communicating the changing distance between the ship and the planet. In addition to lack of surface detail in the first 4 frames, the shape repetition changes from circular to organic and abstract. This is a successful sequence due to the use of shape, value, and detail to communicate to the viewer the story of the Millennium Falcon landing on a planet. Before the glory days of televised sports, was its murky past. America s pastime didn t reflect what the country really represents at the core; a melting pot of people from different races and backgrounds. To understand how race has had an effect on baseball, one must look at the sport s timeline. Starting from conception to pivotal events that shaped the game today, one can really see how the balance of power has shifted drastically in the game and has had an impact on our nation. Baseball started out as a leisure activity and transformed into a business. The game of baseball truly had no borders. In this paper, I will look at the origins of the sport and the battle for integration. I will also take a look at how the minority communities were affected by the conception, involvement, and racism that surrounded the sport. Baseball s origins are difficult to trace. The widely accepted view that it originated in the late 1830 s by Abner Doubleday has been totally debunked. The earliest indications of the sport were in England, Germany, and France. By looking at the meaning of colors in the Chinese culture it can been seen that these colors represent the seasons of June Mays life and the transformation that occurred within her. For starters, in past memories of her mother, when June May was against her culture, she would include colors of pink which in traditional times in China did not have a significant meaning; being color blind to the fact that lemon yellow and pale pink are not good combinations for winter clothes (264). This is significant because of the nonsignificance of the color pink, and how her heritage was insignificant to her at the time. Also, it s important to note the use of pink clothing during the winter. Winter typically signifies death, and not much growth. These are the case in the aspect of June May s ties to her heritage.
