America Online, Financial statement analysis
Financial statement analysis America Online, Inc. Case Study 1
1. Prior to 1995, why was America Online so successful in the commercial online industry relative to
its competitors CompuServe and Prodigy?
AOL offered a broad range of features including real time talk, electronic mail, e magazines and
newspapers, online classes, shopping, and internet access. They also had software for the internet such
as for production and distribution of original content, interactive marketing and transactions
capabilities, and networks to support the transmission of data. In other words, AOL was a platform
that connected the person with the need to internet access with the person who had the internet content
by charging membership fees. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Considering the uncertainty in the subscription life, in order to provide more accurate report AOL
should change its accounting policy and charge the subscriber acquisition cost to the period in which it
is incurred. The company was not consistent with this point of view and actually increased the
amortization period from 12 18 months to 24 months in 1995. AOL was too confident in its market
strategy and retention ability and ignored the increased competition in the market. 5. What would be
the effect on AOL s 1994 and 1995 ending balance sheets if the company had followed the policy of
expensing subscriber acquisition outlays instead of capitalizing them? What would be the effect of
expensing subscriber acquisition costs on AOL s 1995 income statement?
If AOL expensed the subscriber acquisition outlays instead of capitalizing them, it removes these costs
from the asset section on the balance sheets, which reduces the total assets. The shareholder s equity
decreases as a result. If these costs were expensed, they would appear in the expense section on the
income statement. Therefore, increasing the expenses and reduce the net income on the income

Essay On Computer Technology
Computer technology is one of the key drivers in the twenty first century. The technology has led to
new business models and new types of businesses. Higher education institutes are now spending
million to implement computer technology projects like institute management, campus management,
student management etc. computer technologies could save higher education institutes millions of
dollars. Computer technology is the design and construction of computers to better help people at
work, school, home, etc. An incredible development in the higher education has made the

This streamline process requires useful integration of technologies into existing context in order to
provide learners with knowledge of specific subject areas to promote meaningful education and to
improve professional efficiency.
An increasing number of colleges and universities are adopting computer technologies as teaching and
learning tools. Oliver and Wright (2002) reported in the near future technologies may be required for
all students and institutions. As per the study of Roper (2006) and Rice and Miller (2001) Colleges
and universities more and more rely on technology for both business and academic operations. Most
educational institutions have made a significant investment in developing a computing infrastructure
within the institution. Roper (2006) and Lau (2003) described one of the most common challenges for
higher education institutions is dealing with change and the role of technology. Students are feeling
the impact of technology in all areas of the educational experience from recruitment efforts, to
admissions processes, to its use as a teaching tool. Large technological resources are being dedicated
to student recruitment and retention, along with specific promotion efforts to attract better students.

Similarities Between The Hearst Castle And The Topakapi...
Title That I Haven t Figured Out Yet
The drastic difference in time periods between the Hearst Castle and the Topakapi Palace leads to the
differentiation in materiality and function, but the similarities of both the structures come together
with the grandiosity of the project and the lasting effect of the architecture. While the Hearst Castle
was initially built just to accommodate the Hearst family, the Topakapi palace was built for Mehmed
II and his dynasty. After a long line of collaboration with the Hearst family, Julia Morgan was
assigned to design a space for William Randolph Hearst in San Simeon because he was tired of going
up and camping and wanted something that would be more comfortable .[1] Morgan began
construction in 1919, and started with guest houses, since Hearst put emphasis on the idea of having
his family and friends over. Additionally, Morgan partially based her design on the tower of the church
at Ronda in Southern Spain, a favorite site of Hearst. The California location gave Morgan and Hearst
the excuse to resemble and mimic the renaissance style of Southern Spain. Controversy, the Topakapi
Palace was originally built in 1465 by the Sultan Mehmed II and his reign. The Topakapi Palace was a
center for administration, education and most importantly, to accommodate the Sultan. Aspects of
religion and spirituality were highly active through the site and the rich diversity of Islamic
architecture was prevalent throughout the space. Despite the

Paideia as Bildung in Germany in the Age of Enlightenment
ABSTRACT: There have been many interpretations of Bildung in the history of German philosophy,
from the Medieval mystics to the secularization of the Enlightenment. Wilhelm von Humboldt s work
at the end of the 18th century is a good example. He placed the idea of Bildung at the center of his
work because it was rooted in a dynamic, transforming idea of the natural and human worlds while
also being oriented toward a model of balance and perfection. Von Humboldt s interpretation of
modernity is characterized by a strong emphasis on change as well as the need to find criteria for
guiding such a transformation that has no intrinsic or predetermined end. Love of classical antiquity ...

In this way, to render the semantic extent of the term, the meanings of forma and formatio and imago
and imitatio are involved as well; and the following two concepts are implied: firstly the concept of
production according to an order that gives rise to a form (to something subsident on the basis of
mutually congruent rules) and secondly the conformation of the said act to an image given as
assumption, as a model endowed with an absolute value which this image must resemble or aim for.
The original meaning of bilden, as the Deutsches Wörterbuch by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm states, is
that of a plastic activity on the sensory level and means giving shape, producing a certain object
abiding to the rules which preside over the Art. In this case bilden is a synonym for gestalten and
formieren. But the relationship of reproduction, and therefore of resemblance with respect to an image
must be added to this , and this addition to an Urbild pushes bilden well beyond the pure and simple
formation of an object and gives rise to the complex relationship between model and copy, original
and reproduction which implies a very different approach to the question.
Such a double meaning

Charlie Brown Satire
I know that many people around the world know the infamous Peanuts gang and of course the lead
character, Charlie Brown. The Peanuts was an American comic strip created by Charles M. Schulz in
the 1950 s. Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown! This is the title of one of many in a film series based
of his comics. The film was released in 1977 and still has relevance today. The Peanuts not only have
incredible satirical wit and humor, but are just great stories for the heart filled with stories of a young
boy and his dog.
Charlie Brown may be good for a laugh, but also for learning life lessons. I have always enjoyed
Charlie Brown growing up and loved reading the comic strips on Sunday mornings. Let s see if we

criticized him when things went wrong even when he tried his best.

According to Gulati, Huffman, and Neilson (2002), Starbucks proves relationships is an important

Unit 3 Types Of Cell Essay
6. The gradient across the membrane represents potential energy because the gradient plays a major
role of triggering whether diffusion is needed or not, and diffusion is after all, fueled by energy. For
example, if there is an imbalance in the cell and the cell environment, then the concentration gradient
has the potential to trigger diffusion (energy change because of moving molecules) to occur and create
an equilibrium state.
7. Osmosis is the process in which water diffuses across a selectively permeable membrane. The three
types of cell environment include a hypertonic, isotonic, and hypotonic. In a hypertonic environment,

Four ways that large molecules and substances are transported across a membrane include
phagocytosis, pinocytosis, receptor mediated endocytosis and receptor proteins. During phagocytosis,
the cell engulfs a particle by wrapping pseudopodia around the particle and packing the particle within
the food vacuole (membranous sac). Once the food vacuole integrates with a lysosome (w/ hydrolytic
enzyme), the particle will be digested. The second way is pinocytosis, in which the cell takes in
droplets of extracellular fluid and packs it into tiny vesicles; after this, the tiny vesicles are then
transported into the cell because the molecules dissolved in the droplets are the main factors that the
cells need. The third process is known as receptor mediated endocytosis which the cells takes in large
quantities of specific substances of all concentration in the Extracellular (EC) fluid; the membranes of
the cell vesicle are embedded with proteins that has certain receptor sites that are exposed to the EC
fluid in which ligand binds to. Then, the last step is that the receptor proteins cluster in regions of the
membrane known as coated pits which contain fuzzy layer of coat proteins on the exterior; then, each
coated pit forms a vesicle which contains the ligand molecules and after the ingested material is
released from the vesicle, the vesicles then recycle the receptors to the plasma

The Plight Of Women In The 1920 s
After the First World War, America entered into a golden age during the 1920s. As American soldiers
succeeded during the war, women felt more confident to push for social change at home because the
country had economic and political stability (Yalom). Following more than 70 years of women s
protests for change, the United States Congress and President Woodrow Wilson finally passed the
Nineteenth Amendment in 1919. With the right to vote, more women began to work outside of the
home in factories (Dumenil 112). Women s new role in the workforce challenged the traditional belief
that women belonged at home raising their families. However, women still faced difficulties when
joining the workplace, and few women had professional careers despite ... Show more content on

Before the twenties, women made soap at home, but it usually harmed the skin so people refused to
bathe frequently (Sivulka, Cleanliness 25 28). Soapmakers had previously only catered to the upper
class, but as soldiers returned from the First World War, middle class families bought more luxury
goods, like perfumes and soaps (Sivulka, Cleanliness 48). Advertisers had to convince housewives
that manufactured soap had better qualities than homemade soap because women refused to let a
company produce what they had traditionally made (Sivulka, Cleanliness 48). Advertisers convinced
women to purchase soap that had more fragrances and lotions because they could not produce soap
with those qualities at home (Sivulka, Cleanliness 48 49). Advertisements for fragrant and beautifying
soaps urged women to fit a gendered expectation of beauty and youthfulness that usually represented
an upper class status; middle class women wished to imitate the upper class because they thought if
they looked wealthy, then they would gain more wealth. In addition, advertising used traditional
images to persuade women to work in the house for their families. Soapmakers made specialized
soaps for certain purposes, like cleaning, to gain more consumers (Sivulka, Cleanliness 48). In their
advertising for these specialized products, soapmakers often used the image of a housewife to appeal
to the middle class female audience who bought and used these products (Sivulka, Soap 226 227).
With the image of a housewife next to a cleaning product, the target audience understood that only
women used the product. Soap advertisements conveyed the message that women belong at home in
order to properly care for their families while striving to remain as beautiful as

Kristallnacht Analysis
After the defeat in WWI and the humiliation of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany faced an economic
crash and was left under the rule of an unstable democracy. In times of desperate need, the German
people favored the Nazi party and elected their own fascist leader, Adolf Hitler. While the Germans
simply hoped for bread, work, and the restoration of German pride, they were given much more than
they bargained for. Hitler created his own cult of personality and blinded the citizenry to his
promotion of racist ideas and stereotypes, which eventually escalated into millions of deaths across
Europe, and a war that changed the world.
Although the violence on Kristallnacht is viewed as the the spark that led to the flames of the
Holocaust, one must ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Germany s economy after World War I was left in shambles, to the point where people were
living off of bread and water. The Führer took advantage of the people s fear and desperation and used
it to forward his agenda, presenting himself as their light in the darkness. He created a cult of
personality, not unlike those of dictators who ruled at the same time, such as Joseph Stalin Russia and
Benito Mussolini of Italy, or even Kim Jong Un of today. An image from 1938 depicts the different
Badges of Shame assigned to those in concentration camps, including Jews, homosexuals, immigrants,
political enemies, and the mentally ill (Doc 7). Hitler took advantage of symbolism, and in this case
used it to categorize and divide his targets, creating a social stigma around those who wore the stars
and triangles. He further used symbolism in establishing unity among the German population and
solidifying his cult following, by making forcing them to pledge their allegiance to him. An image
from 1935 of a Nazi Rally in Nuremberg depicts a huge crowd of young Germans doing the Nazi
salute (Doc 6). With a hand gesture stolen from the Romans, he made it his own by adding the words
Heil Hitler! . In addition to using symbolism, Hitler used the media and appointed a Minister of
Propaganda to build up a positive image. This hero worship allowed Hitler

Pros And Cons Of Cochlear Implants
Cochlear Implant: Its Pros and Cons
Hearing loss is one of the most difficult disabilities you might face. It has many causes, such as birth
defect, loud noise, illness and accidents. Luckily, there are many ways to treat this condition, such as
hearing aids and devices, among which a very popular choice called cochlear implant.
A cochlear implant uses an electronic device that is surgically implanted within your ear, particularly
its canal. It is performed if you suffer from severe or worsening hearing loss. Essentially, the implant
replaces the function of your inner ear s hair cells, which help you register sound vibrations and when
damaged, are not able to function. While a cochlear implant will not give you back 100% of your
hearing ability, it is enough to allow you to hear and understand most sounds and communicate better
with other people. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It poses some surgical risks and complications.
You should know that surgery, in and of itself, always runs risks, and if you have any medical
condition prior to it, it may make things more difficult healing may be hindered or complications may
arise. Considering that cochlear implants require a surgical insertion, you should always talk to your
physician regarding your current and past health concerns. Surgery can also lead to numbness of the
surgical site, muscle spasms, minor facial paralysis or occasional facial numbness.
Even older adults who receive the implant might have permanent or temporary electronic conversion
complications in the brain, which are not painful nonetheless. Electronic signals might not register
fully, causing some hearing and speech hindrances.
Moreover, some people will have surgical complications or are found to be not compatible with the
device. Their body might reject the implant, which could require further surgery or removal. If the
device fails, patients will experience around the same level of hearing loss or deafness before until
repair is done.

Electronic Medical Records ( Emr ) Implementation
In recent years with huge advances in information technology and health, the initiatives of electronic
medical records (EMR) implementation has become an on going and difficult process. The
computerization of medical practice is considered to be a new standard for medicine practice. With the
promotion of EMR s, the support for the implementation is supported by the government, people who
request higher quality care, and health organizations. This review will focus on the implementation
process of EMRs within the hospital setting. It is known that the paper system has disadvantages that
concerns the utilization of patient information in a quick, accessible, and organized manner. The
implementation of a hospital wide EMR however, is a extremely complex matter that involves a range
of external skills needed to successfully implement the system (Boonstra, 2014). A hospital can not
only rely on it s internal resources or staff to carry out the implementation of a EMR system. With
concerns of quality and costs, the long term plan of an EMR systems could save billions of dollars
from faster data communication, increase d patient care with fewer errors, and in addition to
improving the quality of health care. From the articles and studies that this review will be referring to,
a similar pattern of implementation process reoccurs. None of the articles share the same stages of the
implementation process, however I have concluded that the main theme withinthese articles

Security And Beyond Information Technology
To I.T. Security Beyond
Information technology has become a very dominant and ever growing industry in today s market.
People have taken notice of it, and thus have invested quite heavily into it. Everyone is going online
nowadays, more than ever before, but this is not just limited to people. Financial/Educational
institutions, and various companies are all online in one form or another; being interconnected to the
internet of everything. A prominent aspect of information technology is security, and it has been
attracting a lot of attention as of late. IT Security has garnered many companies and individuals to
invest so much into it; that it has essentially created an industry of its own. However, can all of this
investment in IT Security really be justified? Let it be known that the internet is not secure. It was
originally created by the US military for communication purposes, and since then has grown into
network upon networks of computers and computer systems, for everyone to use. With the exponential
growth that the internet has taken on, it s very hard to make it as secure as one would like. However,
there are measures and protocols that are put in place to do just that, secure the internet. The internet is
a combination of equipment, protocols and people, that when put together make everything
just...work. It is a multi layered system that depends on not just the technology itself, but those people
who manage/operate it, and of course the investment it requires for

Who Is Martin Luther King On Christian Liberty
The battle for liberty has been fought on different scales with the beginning of thousands of
revolutions in the history. The ideal liberty is an ultimate goal that inflames the minds of many people
who yearn for individual freedom. In all these struggles, the definition of liberty is not the same for
different people. According to the text, the idea of liberty has played a powerful role in the history of
Western society and culture, but the meaning and understanding of liberty has undergone continual
change and interpretation. For example in the Roman world, liberty meant the condition of being a
free man. In the Middle Ages, liberty meant having special privileges or rights. However, the idea of
liberty under religious dimension was rather new. Martin Luther King had interpreted another
important foundation of liberty in his treatise On Christian Liberty: the important of faith and
Scripture to Christian life.
King meant of liberty was based not on articulation of justification by faith alone but through the word
of Gospel. Perhaps, people should have liberty in terms of their connection to God not controlled or
managed by the Church. King understood human liberty, broadly, as the capacity for a spiritual, new
and inward man to make a man a justified, free and true Christian. According to King, Christian man
is the most free lord of all, and subject to none. Of course, faith gives us true Christian liberty. We are
free from the law as regards our salvation.

Characterization Of Duck Viperin And The Natural Reservoir...
Characterization of duck viperin
Introduction:
Ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) and other waterfowl are the natural reservoir of Influenza A virus (IAV)
(Webster et al. 1992). IAV may cross the species barrier from the reservoir species causing sporadic
infections in other avian or mammalian species (Webster et al. 1995). These infections impose a large
burden on human and animal health worldwide leading to economic losses; In humans, in 2008, 90
million new influenza infections resulted in an estimated 28000 115000 deaths worldwide (Nair et al.
2011), in birds, in 1999, Italy experienced a HPAI epidemic caused by an H7N1 virus subtype. In total
16 million birds were culled and the estimated loss was about € 507 million, with € 112 million in
direct losses and € 395 million in consequential losses (Sartore et al. 2010). Ducks often display little
to no disease symptoms after IAV infection. They stimulate a robust innate immune response when
infected with HPAI by up regulating many innate immune genes (Vanderven et al. 2012). Therefore,
characterization of innate immune genes of ducks, particularly the genes that are upregulated during
IAV infection, might give insight into the relationship between IAV and the innate immune response
of ducks, which will help us to control the virus.
When exposing the mallard ducks to the highly pathogenic IAV (H5N1), there was an upregulation in
some innate immunity genes; one of the highest upregulated gene was viperin (Virus inhibitory
protein,

Bargaining Vs Collective Bargaining
The role of the NLRA, which is also known as the Wagner Act, was established to recognize
employee s rights to organize and negotiate collectively with representatives of their own preference
(Murray, 2017). Furthermore, Section 7 of the NLRA states: Employees shall have the right to self
organization, to form, join, or assist labor organizations, to bargain collectively through
representatives of their own choosing, and to engage in concerted activities for the purpose of
collective bargaining or other mutual aid or protection (Meza, 2013, p. 335). Collective bargaining is
the process by which conditions of employment are negotiated between management, and the labor
organization representing employees in the bargaining unit. However, collective bargaining refers to a
situation in which union members and officials meet with an intent to resolve any issues or conflicts,
in an attempt to maintain relationships (Holley, Jennings, Wolters, 2012, p. 243). Needless to say,
when an employer states that they do not have to bargain over an issue with the union, the employee
should still verify this information with their union representative. According to the text, collective
bargaining is the process of negotiation that occurs between an employer and a group of employees
(Holley, Jennings, Wolters, 2012). Essentially, good faith bargaining is when both parties genuinely
collaborate to reach a labor agreement, which is reasonable in their bargaining positions,

Marge Piercy s Poetry
Marge Piercy is known for writing poems about women rights and women s negative treatment by
society in the 1936s. In her poem What s that smell in the kitchen? she talks about how society see
women. According to society, women were raised to cook and clean so women are supposed to have a
meal on the table for their husbands. Piercy s attitude toward this statement is that she is mad because
there is more quantiles to women than cooking and cleaning. In the poem What that smell in the
kitchen? Piercy s use of literary devices expresses how she feels about society treating women. This is
why women from all over the world are burning dinners, this is not because they do not know how to
cook, but as a protest to society that there is more quantiles to women. Society forces ... Show more

For example, in the last stanza Piercy states, Burning dinner is not incompetence but war. . This
metaphor helped the reader understand that women from all over the world are burning dinners as a
protest to society. This quotation shows how women are tired of being expected to have food on the
table for their husbands and clean the house, just because they were raised that way. In addition, the
author states, Look she says, once I was roast duck on your platter with parsley, but now I am spam.
This literary device allowed the reader to understand how women feels about society making them
feel less important. Piercy uses this metaphor as a symbol to show how women were once so
respected and powerful, but as time pass their power and respect began to fade away. They were no
longer appreciated for what they do. The connotations allowed the reader to figure out the universal
truth about women in the poem What s that smell in the kitchen? through the use of metaphors.
Another literary device that contributed to the reader discovery of the theme was the tone of the

Pacific Northwest Fire Suppression Effects
INTRODUCTION
Projecting the effects of fire suppression and possible cumulative effects of fire suppression and other
disturbances are vital management tasks moving forward into forestry planning strategies for the
future. Although the long term effects of fire suppression in the Pacific Northwest have been
monitored since the early 1900 s, it is challenging to decipher relationships between the cumulative
effects of a century of suppression alongside climate change, insect outbreaks and disease and plan
how to combat them effectively.
Several software programs have been written and tested to simulate the future of these altered forests
using a variety of fire regimes to map the trajectory of the Pacific Northwest forests based on what is

From the viewpoint of project management, the terms owner and sponsor are synonymous because
both have the ultimate authority to make all important decisions. Since an owner is essentially
acquiring a facility on a promise in some form of agreement, it will be wise for any owner to have a
clear understanding of the acquisition process in order to maintain firm control of the quality,
timeliness and cost of the completed facility.
From the perspective of an owner, the project life cycle for a constructed facility may be illustrated
schematically in Figure 1 1. Essentially, a project is conceived to meet market demands or needs in a
timely fashion. Various possibilities may be considered in the conceptual planning stage, and the
technological and economic feasibility of each alternative will be assessed and compared in order to
select the best possible project. The financing schemes for the proposed alternatives must also be
examined, and the project will be programmed with respect to the timing for its completion and for
available cash flows. After the scope of the project is clearly defined, detailed engineering design will
provide the blueprint for construction, and the definitive cost estimate will serve as the baseline for
cost control. In the procurement and construction stage, the

Benito Mussolini s Ambiguity Of Fascism
Fascism such as that displayed in post World War 1 Italy was in many ways a contradictory ideology;
anti modernism contrasted with technological obsession and anti democratic views paired with
capitalism. Despite this ambiguity of the fascist ideology, one clear characteristic among almost all
fascists throughout history has been a heavy focus on militarism an aspect of Mussolini s Italy which
was intrinsically tied to his use of terror and force to achieve fascist political agendas. For evidence of
Benito Mussolini s heavy handed political tactics, one must first examine how his fascist party first
rose to power in a country which had been a constitutional monarchy for many years prior. Although
Italy had been among the allied victors of

Tested in Every Way
Tested in Every Way: the Catholic Priesthood in Today s Church, written by Christopher Ruddy, is a
report and at the same time a reflection on the Seventh Annual Cardinal Bernardin Conference which
was held in the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, TX in 2003 . Ruddy reports the voices of
academic and pastoral expertise sharing about the challenges and the identity of being a priest.
Besides of giving a report, the book opens up and finishes with the Ruddy s insightful reflections.
Ruddy opens up with an examination of the cultural and ecclesiological contexts of the priesthood in
today s church (13) . In the first chapter of the book Ruddy mentions three challenges the church and
priest are facing today: popular skepticism, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What people expect from us is to be witnesses of living faith that is rooted in prayer and scripture
(52). Ruddy s brings into consideration what Paul VI said in his apostolic exhortation Evangelii
Nuntiandi that: modern man listens to witnesses more than to teachers, and if he does not listen to
teachers, it is because they are witnesses.
One thing that challenges me is that Americans expect from me to be a good preacher. The shortage of
priesthood in the United States has led some communities to be without pastors. Bishops, in trying to
give solution to the problems, have relayed on religious congregations whose members are from other
cultures. If local priest have difficulties in preaching, the seminarians from other cultures will find it
more difficult. One mayor factor is that those missionaries often lack ways to express themselves
because of their limited language. Missionaries from other cultures need to give opinions on the
matter. It is true that we are ministering in the United States and that we need to put all our effort to
share the Word of God with clarity, but people need to see our struggles when dealing in a second
language. I am sure that if we come into dialogue with American people, we, missionaries from other
cultures, can find the support and help to improve our preaching. This is another aspect that
Christopher Ruddy needs to reflect on.
Since I entered the seminary, I have questioned my

Charles Darwin s Research In The Galapagos Islands
The first force of evolution is mutations. Mutations are the only way that DNA can create entirely
unique structures. Without mutations, evolution would be impossible. The second force is natural
selection. The idea of natural selection came from Charles Darwin and his research in the Galapagos
Islands. There, he discovered that animals were adapting to the environment around them and
highlighted some key differences in their phenotypes based on their home environment. The third
force is genetic drift. Genetic drift is where specific alleles appear and others fade away purely by
chance. Over time, these changes have large effects over populations. The fourth force is gene flow.
Gene flow is the study of how certain genes are spread out among

Greek Creature In Dante s Inferno
In Dante s epic poem Inferno, he uses many interesting character and creatures from many iconic
stories we have read or heard about. He repeats and takes a lot of ideas from Greek culture, which
very clever because as reader we are familiarized with Greek Mythologies. Greek mythologies are
based on very unusual and unique creatures, which are very interesting, and he uses these creatures in
his journey and showcases their importance in each situation. The creature I found interesting and
attractive is Cerberus, not because the way Dante describes the creature. I saw this creature in a movie
called Percy Jackson: The Light Thief, Percy goes to the underworld to save his mother from Hades.
When Percy reaches to Hades home, his home is guarded with Cerberus, which was a three headed
creature, looked very vicious, and violent. When I read about this creature in Dante s Inferno it
brought back that image I saw in the movie, very scary looking beast that is about to kill. Although it
looked scary, I found it fascinating because there were three heads jointed together with long teeth like
vampires, each with different features. This is why I picked this creature, due to my fascination with

The Importance Of Technology On Human Interaction And...
Up until about twenty or thirty years ago, no one really knew what technology was or how to use a
cell phone, tablet, or computer. The iPhone was not even invented until ten years ago, but today,
technology plays a role in almost every aspect of every person s life. It is just about impossible to go a
day without seeing or using some piece of technology. The extensive amount of technology available
today has really influenced the world and how people live. Unfortunately, that influence is not entirely
positive; it has hindered human interaction and communication by making people socially awkward,
creating relationship issues, and limiting people s abilities to understand and use the written language.
Because technology hinders human interaction and communication, people should limit their
technological use.
First, the more recent generations of children are growing up with technology available everywhere,
so they are learning from a very young age what technology is and how to use it. Instead of playing
outside with other kids in their neighborhood like their parents did growing up, most children today
play video games on a gaming console, laptop, tablet, or cell phone. This is isolating children from the
real world and inhibiting their ability to learn how to communicate with others. They are not learning
to understand various social clues or even how to have a conversation face to face, and because of
this, most kids may feel anxious or overwhelmed when they face a social

The Library Of The Sabarmati Ashram
While working in the archives of the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, I came across a fascinating
letter to MK Gandhi sent by 11 young women of Calcutta. The letter was undated, but it appeared to
have been written in January, 1939. It was addressed to Most revered Mahatmaji , and was signed
individually by the 11 women, all Hindus by their names. The letter was written in protest against an
essay written by Gandhi for his journal, Harijan. Gandhi s article, said these women, was not very
inspiring , since it seemed to put the whole slur upon the injured female who suffers most due to the
malevolent social custom .
The letter (to whose arguments I shall presently return) intrigued me, so I set off to locate the original

Gratuitous attack
In between acknowledging the problem and offering solutions, Gandhi spoilt his case by launching an
unprovoked attack on the dress code of the modern woman. For all the evil that males did, he
remarked, I have a fear that the modern girl loves to be Juliet to half a dozen Romeos. She loves
adventure. My correspondent seems to represent the unusual type. The modern girl dresses not to
protect herself from wind, rain and sun but to attract attention. She improves upon nature by painting
herself and looking extraordinary. The non violent way is not for such girls.
It was to this gratuitous advice, this patriarchal preconception of how women must dress, that the
young women of Bengal responded. Some may find modern girls dresses and deportments a bit
different than they wish them to be, said these women to Gandhi, but to brand them as exhibitionistic
generally is a positive insult to her sex as a whole. Strength of character and chaste behaviour are
necessary not only for modern girls but for men as well. There may be a few girls playing Juliets to a
dozen Romeos. But such cases presuppose the existence of half a dozen Romeos, moving around the
streets in quest of a Juliet, thereby pointing out where the proper correction lies.
These 11 young women of Calcutta spiritedly defended the woman s right to

So owning one s land had become the biggest goal for many Blacks to pursue since they saw it as the
only path for their properity. As more and more Blacks gained economic power through land
ownership, the Whites did anything as possible to reclaim their superiority over the Blacks. They did
this by passing the separate but equal rule, where the Blacks were not allowed to sit or be in places
assigned as whites only . They tried to deprive their voting rights by assigning a poll tax and a literacy
test to their vote, which many Blacks were not able to afford themselves of. Also, by the 1920s, a very
strong anti Black organization had formed throughout the south who had called themselves by name,
Ku Klux Klan. Many Blacks had found it easier to establish all Black communities, especially around
the church settings. By the 1930s, the Great Depression causes President Roosevelt to form welfare

A Brave New World Conflict Essay
In the novel Brave New World by Aldus Huxley, the use of technology to control the growth and
development of society creates conflicts within individuals, conflicts between individuals, and
conflicts between technology and mankind.
One of the major conflicts shown in Brave New World is man vs. technology. This is obvious to the
reader but the people in this society are unaware of this being any sort of problem because they are
brainwashed as young children through the process of technology. Actually, these people are all about
the use of technology; technology is everything. The conflict itself would be the use of technology to
create mankind and force the people in the society to do certain things and act certain ways. This is
what causes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of this, there is a third conflict involving Bernard; a man vs. self conflict. He has become
somewhat shy; he hates his self image, gets jealous of others and becomes unsociable with personality
changes.
Another major conflict existing in Brave New World is John vs. both the Savages and the World State.
This would be a dual man vs. society conflict. John has heard stories about the world state and this
made him eager and interested to go and explore this new world. But when he ends up going, he is
extremely disappointed and is not accepted at all into that society. He will always remain a savage to
the people in the world state. However, his curious nature towards the World State made it impossible
for John to truly be accepted into the world of the Savages; he was always an outsider to them.
These conflicts connect to the theme, the use of technology to control the growth and development of
society. Technology plays a major part in this book because its what controls all of society; making
people act a certain way and reducing the amount of conflicts. In this matter, although they have
reduced the number of conflicts, they have subsequently created other conflicts. The focus around
technology creates so much anger, jealousy, sadness, and tension but this is extinguished by the use of
a chemical, soma and the act of brainwashing at a young age. Everything in this society is about
control

Dna Profiling And The Criminal Justice System
In November of 1983, 15 year old Lynda Mann was found raped and murdered on a deserted road, and
although police were able to obtain a semen sample from her murderer the case remained unsolved. In
1986 the killer struck again murdering 15 year old Dawn Ashworth, once again leaving behind semen,
but this time the police were able to use DNA profiling to match the semen to a suspect. Colin
Pitchfork became the first person to be caught based on mass DNA screening, and the first to be
convicted based on DNA profiling. The use of Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) in the criminal justice
system has greatly tipped the scales in favor of law enforcement, and changed the world that we live
in. Court cases that in the past relied heavily on eye witness testimony and circumstantial evidence
now have science to back them up. DNA analysis has revolutionized the criminal justice system, and
even though there are some flaws, the use of DNA evidence should continue to be used by law
enforcement. While DNA profiling is still considered to be fairly new , the analysis of the human
genetic variation began more than a century ago with the discovery of the human ABO blood group.
Karl Landsteiner realized that these variations in humans could be used to solve crimes. ABO could be
used to exclude suspects, but police needed something that could definitively point the finger at a
suspect. In 1984, Alec Jeffreys discovered hypervariable loci, also known as minisatellites. He
discovered that the

SHOULD BELIEVERS STORE FOOD? Jesus advises His disciples in Matthew, chapter 5:
So don t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take
pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already
knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in
your life and live as he wants you to (Matthew 5:33). Other examples in Scripture include the story of
Joseph in Egypt, who is a shadow of Jesus, and the manna that God provided for food for the Israelites
in the wilderness. Jesus will also provide for His children in times of wildernesses. I believe an
obsession of storing is wrong. Christ s final words to His disciples while on Earth were, Therefore, go
and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the
Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). Jesus gives us signs of His return. There will be wars and rumor of wars,
yet the end is not here. This is only the beginning. Like giving birth, pains come every little bit. They

Depression and Its Causes
The purpose of this essay is to give a critical overview of the current treatment approaches offered to
individuals experiencing a mental health problem. The mental health problem that will be discussed
throughout the essay is depression. The chosen treatment that will be examined is, antidepressant
treatment, by taking in to account the issues associated with this particular treatment.
Additionally, the essay will deliver an understanding of mental health and illness by focusing on the
underlying perspectives (biomedical). According to Reynolds et al. (2009, p. 8) compared with other
areas of health practice, the mental health field is particularly subjected to heated debate . Therefore,
the essay will attempt to look at the contemporary issues within mental health care by drawing on
relevant research.
There are various theories and understandings given to the term mental health . A previous
understanding given by the Health Education Authority (1997, in Tilford and Cattan, 2006 p. 17)
defined mental health as the emotional and spiritual pliability which allows us to enjoy life and to
survive pain, disappointment and sadness. It is a positive sense of well being and an underlying belief
in our own, and others , dignity and worth . However more recently, mental health has been defined by
the World Health Organisation (2011) as a state of well being in which every individual realises his or

  • 2. America Online, Financial statement analysis Financial statement analysis America Online, Inc. Case Study 1 1. Prior to 1995, why was America Online so successful in the commercial online industry relative to its competitors CompuServe and Prodigy? AOL offered a broad range of features including real time talk, electronic mail, e magazines and newspapers, online classes, shopping, and internet access. They also had software for the internet such as for production and distribution of original content, interactive marketing and transactions capabilities, and networks to support the transmission of data. In other words, AOL was a platform that connected the person with the need to internet access with the person who had the internet content by charging membership fees. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Considering the uncertainty in the subscription life, in order to provide more accurate report AOL should change its accounting policy and charge the subscriber acquisition cost to the period in which it is incurred. The company was not consistent with this point of view and actually increased the amortization period from 12 18 months to 24 months in 1995. AOL was too confident in its market strategy and retention ability and ignored the increased competition in the market. 5. What would be the effect on AOL s 1994 and 1995 ending balance sheets if the company had followed the policy of expensing subscriber acquisition outlays instead of capitalizing them? What would be the effect of expensing subscriber acquisition costs on AOL s 1995 income statement? If AOL expensed the subscriber acquisition outlays instead of capitalizing them, it removes these costs from the asset section on the balance sheets, which reduces the total assets. The shareholder s equity decreases as a result. If these costs were expensed, they would appear in the expense section on the income statement. Therefore, increasing the expenses and reduce the net income on the income ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Title That I Haven t Figured Out Yet The drastic difference in time periods between the Hearst Castle and the Topakapi Palace leads to the differentiation in materiality and function, but the similarities of both the structures come together with the grandiosity of the project and the lasting effect of the architecture. While the Hearst Castle was initially built just to accommodate the Hearst family, the Topakapi palace was built for Mehmed II and his dynasty. After a long line of collaboration with the Hearst family, Julia Morgan was assigned to design a space for William Randolph Hearst in San Simeon because he was tired of going up and camping and wanted something that would be more comfortable .[1] Morgan began construction in 1919, and started with guest houses, since Hearst put emphasis on the idea of having his family and friends over. He placed the idea of Bildung at the center of his work because it was rooted in a dynamic, transforming idea of the natural and human worlds while also being oriented toward a model of balance and perfection. Von Humboldt s interpretation of modernity is characterized by a strong emphasis on change as well as the need to find criteria for guiding such a transformation that has no intrinsic or predetermined end. In this way, to render the semantic extent of the term, the meanings of forma and formatio and imago and imitatio are involved as well; and the following two concepts are implied: firstly the concept of production according to an order that gives rise to a form (to something subsident on the basis of mutually congruent rules) and secondly the conformation of the said act to an image given as assumption, as a model endowed with an absolute value which this image must resemble or aim for. The original meaning of bilden, as the Deutsches Wörterbuch by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm states, is that of a plastic activity on the sensory level and means giving shape, producing a certain object abiding to the rules which preside over the Art. The gradient across the membrane represents potential energy because the gradient plays a major role of triggering whether diffusion is needed or not, and diffusion is after all, fueled by energy. For example, if there is an imbalance in the cell and the cell environment, then the concentration gradient has the potential to trigger diffusion (energy change because of moving molecules) to occur and create an equilibrium state. 7. Four ways that large molecules and substances are transported across a membrane include phagocytosis, pinocytosis, receptor mediated endocytosis and receptor proteins. During phagocytosis, the cell engulfs a particle by wrapping pseudopodia around the particle and packing the particle within the food vacuole (membranous sac). Once the food vacuole integrates with a lysosome (w/ hydrolytic enzyme), the particle will be digested. The second way is pinocytosis, in which the cell takes in droplets of extracellular fluid and packs it into tiny vesicles; after this, the tiny vesicles are then transported into the cell because the molecules dissolved in the droplets are the main factors that the cells need. The third process is known as receptor mediated endocytosis which the cells takes in large quantities of specific substances of all concentration in the Extracellular (EC) fluid; the membranes of the cell vesicle are embedded with proteins that has certain receptor sites that are exposed to the EC fluid in which ligand binds to. Then, the last step is that the receptor proteins cluster in regions of the membrane known as coated pits which contain fuzzy layer of coat proteins on the exterior; then, each coated pit forms a vesicle which contains the ligand molecules and after the ingested material is released from the vesicle, the vesicles then recycle the receptors to the plasma ... As American soldiers succeeded during the war, women felt more confident to push for social change at home because the country had economic and political stability (Yalom). Following more than 70 years of women s protests for change, the United States Congress and President Woodrow Wilson finally passed the Nineteenth Amendment in 1919. With the right to vote, more women began to work outside of the home in factories (Dumenil 112). Advertisers had to convince housewives that manufactured soap had better qualities than homemade soap because women refused to let a company produce what they had traditionally made (Sivulka, Cleanliness 48). Advertisers convinced women to purchase soap that had more fragrances and lotions because they could not produce soap with those qualities at home (Sivulka, Cleanliness 48 49). Advertisements for fragrant and beautifying soaps urged women to fit a gendered expectation of beauty and youthfulness that usually represented an upper class status; middle class women wished to imitate the upper class because they thought if they looked wealthy, then they would gain more wealth. In addition, advertising used traditional images to persuade women to work in the house for their families. Soapmakers made specialized soaps for certain purposes, like cleaning, to gain more consumers (Sivulka, Cleanliness 48). • 18. Who Is Martin Luther King On Christian Liberty The battle for liberty has been fought on different scales with the beginning of thousands of revolutions in the history. The ideal liberty is an ultimate goal that inflames the minds of many people who yearn for individual freedom. In all these struggles, the definition of liberty is not the same for different people. According to the text, the idea of liberty has played a powerful role in the history of Western society and culture, but the meaning and understanding of liberty has undergone continual change and interpretation. For example in the Roman world, liberty meant the condition of being a free man. In the Middle Ages, liberty meant having special privileges or rights. However, the idea of liberty under religious dimension was rather new. Martin Luther King had interpreted another important foundation of liberty in his treatise On Christian Liberty: the important of faith and Scripture to Christian life. King meant of liberty was based not on articulation of justification by faith alone but through the word of Gospel. Perhaps, people should have liberty in terms of their connection to God not controlled or managed by the Church. King understood human liberty, broadly, as the capacity for a spiritual, new and inward man to make a man a justified, free and true Christian. According to King, Christian man is the most free lord of all, and subject to none. Of course, faith gives us true Christian liberty. We are free from the law as regards our salvation. ... Characterization of duck viperin Introduction: Ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) and other waterfowl are the natural reservoir of Influenza A virus (IAV) (Webster et al. 1992). IAV may cross the species barrier from the reservoir species causing sporadic infections in other avian or mammalian species (Webster et al. 1995). These infections impose a large burden on human and animal health worldwide leading to economic losses; In humans, in 2008, 90 million new influenza infections resulted in an estimated 28000 115000 deaths worldwide (Nair et al. 2011), in birds, in 1999, Italy experienced a HPAI epidemic caused by an H7N1 virus subtype. In total 16 million birds were culled and the estimated loss was about € 507 million, with € 112 million in direct losses and € 395 million in consequential losses (Sartore et al. 2010). Ducks often display little to no disease symptoms after IAV infection. They stimulate a robust innate immune response when infected with HPAI by up regulating many innate immune genes (Vanderven et al. 2012). Therefore, characterization of innate immune genes of ducks, particularly the genes that are upregulated during IAV infection, might give insight into the relationship between IAV and the innate immune response of ducks, which will help us to control the virus. • 28. The Importance Of Technology On Human Interaction And... Up until about twenty or thirty years ago, no one really knew what technology was or how to use a cell phone, tablet, or computer. The iPhone was not even invented until ten years ago, but today, technology plays a role in almost every aspect of every person s life. It is just about impossible to go a day without seeing or using some piece of technology. The extensive amount of technology available today has really influenced the world and how people live. Unfortunately, that influence is not entirely positive; it has hindered human interaction and communication by making people socially awkward, creating relationship issues, and limiting people s abilities to understand and use the written language. Because technology hinders human interaction and communication, people should limit their technological use. First, the more recent generations of children are growing up with technology available everywhere, so they are learning from a very young age what technology is and how to use it. Instead of playing outside with other kids in their neighborhood like their parents did growing up, most children today play video games on a gaming console, laptop, tablet, or cell phone. This is isolating children from the real world and inhibiting their ability to learn how to communicate with others. They are not learning to understand various social clues or even how to have a conversation face to face, and because of this, most kids may feel anxious or overwhelmed when they face a social ... • 29. The Library Of The Sabarmati Ashram While working in the archives of the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, I came across a fascinating letter to MK Gandhi sent by 11 young women of Calcutta. The letter was undated, but it appeared to have been written in January, 1939. It was addressed to Most revered Mahatmaji , and was signed individually by the 11 women, all Hindus by their names. The letter was written in protest against an essay written by Gandhi for his journal, Harijan. Gandhi s article, said these women, was not very inspiring , since it seemed to put the whole slur upon the injured female who suffers most due to the malevolent social custom . Gratuitous attack In between acknowledging the problem and offering solutions, Gandhi spoilt his case by launching an unprovoked attack on the dress code of the modern woman. For all the evil that males did, he remarked, I have a fear that the modern girl loves to be Juliet to half a dozen Romeos. She loves adventure. My correspondent seems to represent the unusual type. The modern girl dresses not to protect herself from wind, rain and sun but to attract attention. She improves upon nature by painting herself and looking extraordinary. The non violent way is not for such girls. It was to this gratuitous advice, this patriarchal preconception of how women must dress, that the young women of Bengal responded. Some may find modern girls dresses and deportments a bit different than they wish them to be, said these women to Gandhi, but to brand them as exhibitionistic generally is a positive insult to her sex as a whole. Strength of character and chaste behaviour are necessary not only for modern girls but for men as well. There may be a few girls playing Juliets to a dozen Romeos. But such cases presuppose the existence of half a dozen Romeos, moving around the streets in quest of a Juliet, thereby pointing out where the proper correction lies. As more and more Blacks gained economic power through land ownership, the Whites did anything as possible to reclaim their superiority over the Blacks. They did this by passing the separate but equal rule, where the Blacks were not allowed to sit or be in places assigned as whites only . They tried to deprive their voting rights by assigning a poll tax and a literacy test to their vote, which many Blacks were not able to afford themselves of. Also, by the 1920s, a very strong anti Black organization had formed throughout the south who had called themselves by name, Ku Klux Klan. Many Blacks had found it easier to establish all Black communities, especially around the church settings. A Brave New World Conflict Essay In the novel Brave New World by Aldus Huxley, the use of technology to control the growth and development of society creates conflicts within individuals, conflicts between individuals, and conflicts between technology and mankind. One of the major conflicts shown in Brave New World is man vs. technology. This is obvious to the reader but the people in this society are unaware of this being any sort of problem because they are brainwashed as young children through the process of technology. Actually, these people are all about the use of technology; technology is everything. The conflict itself would be the use of technology to create mankind and force the people in the society to do certain things and act certain ways. This is what causes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because of this, there is a third conflict involving Bernard; a man vs. self conflict. He has become somewhat shy; he hates his self image, gets jealous of others and becomes unsociable with personality changes. Another major conflict existing in Brave New World is John vs. both the Savages and the World State. This would be a dual man vs. society conflict. John has heard stories about the world state and this made him eager and interested to go and explore this new world. But when he ends up going, he is extremely disappointed and is not accepted at all into that society. He will always remain a savage to the people in the world state. However, his curious nature towards the World State made it impossible for John to truly be accepted into the world of the Savages; he was always an outsider to them. These conflicts connect to the theme, the use of technology to control the growth and development of society. Technology plays a major part in this book because its what controls all of society; making people act a certain way and reducing the amount of conflicts. In this matter, although they have reduced the number of conflicts, they have subsequently created other conflicts. The focus around technology creates so much anger, jealousy, sadness, and tension but this is extinguished by the use of a chemical, soma and the act of brainwashing at a young age. Dna Profiling And The Criminal Justice System In November of 1983, 15 year old Lynda Mann was found raped and murdered on a deserted road, and although police were able to obtain a semen sample from her murderer the case remained unsolved. In 1986 the killer struck again murdering 15 year old Dawn Ashworth, once again leaving behind semen, but this time the police were able to use DNA profiling to match the semen to a suspect. Colin Pitchfork became the first person to be caught based on mass DNA screening, and the first to be convicted based on DNA profiling. The use of Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) in the criminal justice system has greatly tipped the scales in favor of law enforcement, and changed the world that we live in. Court cases that in the past relied heavily on eye witness testimony and circumstantial evidence now have science to back them up. DNA analysis has revolutionized the criminal justice system, and even though there are some flaws, the use of DNA evidence should continue to be used by law enforcement. While DNA profiling is still considered to be fairly new , the analysis of the human genetic variation began more than a century ago with the discovery of the human ABO blood group. Karl Landsteiner realized that these variations in humans could be used to solve crimes. ABO could be used to exclude suspects, but police needed something that could definitively point the finger at a suspect.
