Artworks of South Asia (India)
- Indian art showcases the great and enduring
cultures and traditions of the Indian people. Their
magnificent and wonderful examples of architecture,
sculpture, painting, and crafts reflect the age old
tradition of this country.
- Indian craftsmen are well-known for the
beautifully designed metalworks, jewelry, ivories,
utensils, fabrics and woven materials.
4. - An example of Hindu
architectural design that is
famous all over the world
is the TAJ MAHAL in
Agra, India.
- Taj Mahala was built by
the Moghul emperor Shah
Jahan for his beloved wife
Mumtaz Mahal who died
in child birth.
- it was completed in
1653.
5. Other famous temples are the
Akshardam, Harmandir Sahib,
and the modern Lotus
Temple.

Temple
- it is famous for its towers that
hava balanced structures. The
shape may be different from
traditional Hindu Temples, but it
appears as imposing and
magnificient as the classical
Hindu temples.
9. B. Sculptures and Carvings
- the most important art in INDIA is sculpture. It is
good to note that Indian sculpture is used mainly as
decoration.
- one famous example is the famous Buddha figure
found in Mathura, India. This city has been the seat of
sculpting the buddha for a very long time (2 BC – 6 AD).
- another popular sculpture is the statue of Ganesha,
the Hindu god of Light and festivals, which is plated with
gold sheets. This symbolizes reverence of life.

- Turkish Islamic calligraphy was introduced in the
16th and 17th centuries, during the reign of the Ottomans.
1. DIWANI – distinguishable by complex lines with the
letter and close juxtaposition of letters in the world.
2. HILYA – a bright sheet bearing Islamic calligraphy of
Prophet Muhammad’s description.
3. TUGHRA – the formal signature of the sultan which is
elaborately stylized and performed some functions of
portions in Christian Europe, like the hilya.

18. MARBLING
Ehru or Marbled paper is a form of art introduced in turkey. They
sprinkle mineral and vegetable dyes on water mixed with gall fluid
of cattle and gum on a sheet of paper.
They create original, unduplicated, and unique patterns. These
paper was traditionally used as flyleaves of a books and for inside
covers, for borders of miniatures, and Ottoman panels.
19. CARVING
- turkey is the sole source of a mineral substance called
Meerschaum or Luletasi. This is the material used for hand-carved
ornaments and pipes since 1700. this mineral is Hydrous
Magnesium silicate which can be found from 30 to 450 feet below
earth surface.
- the content of Meerschaum’s magnesium provide strength while
porosity comes from hydrogen and oxygen.
20. TEXTILE AND DRESS
-Byzantines use silk for religious decorations and vestments they
import silk from China which almost lead to bankruptcy
- silkworm eggs were brought to Constantinople by two Russian
monks in the 6th century. From then on, silk making in Bursa
boomed as an industry
- Bursa remains a textile center, known for its application of salt-
dye techniques.

22. PAINTING
- Western style began to influence Turkish paintings in the 19th
century. Ottoman Art dealt on traditional forms, except Turkish
Miniatures. Painters of miniatures are categorized as:
• Those who painted decorative flowers and murals
• A few non-Muslims who painted battle scenes,
portraits, and sieges.
• Those who use stronger shades and give intensive
attention to detail.

24. TURKISH BRACELETS
-Bracelets are human adornment which are ancient.
- The designs of the earliest types of jewelries show that they were
used as form of magic charm or talisman.
- Former bracelets were made of soft metals like copper and gold,
stone and wood.
25. TURKISH BRACELETS
Other functions of bracelets are as follows:
-Copper bracelets are believed to be relievers of joint pains.
- Bracelets containing agate, a stone believed to be sacred, were
believed to give protection against venomous animal bites.
- Bloodstones were believed to control bleeding.
Halhal is an Arabic word for ankle, and this is the same term
they call bracelets worn around the ankle. Traditionally, halhal was
made from a string of hollow spheres with metal beads inside which
produce a twinkling sound making them looked attractive.
