How Does Emily Brontë Use Syntax In Wuthering Heights
In this passage of Wuthering Heights, Brontë expresses the moment of Heathcliff s reaction to
Catherine Linton s death. In this particular passage, Emily Brontë utilizes syntax to illustrate
Heathcliff s obsessive love for the late Catherine Linton.
Brontë expresses Heathcliff s deep, hidden emotions through the use of syntax. In the beginning, few
questions are asked by Heathcliff, such as if she died like a saint, to convey his curiosity about his true
love s death (Brontë 164). Then after Nelly answers his questions about how Catherine died,
Heathcliff s attitude shifts. Heathcliff s syntax starts to give off a different emotion expressed by the
arrangement of his words and phrases. The combination of concise sentences with exclamation

Review Of Art Spiegelman s In The Shadow Of No Towers...
The image is from a comic strip released in 2004 by Art Spiegelman following the 9/11 terrorists
attacks. Spiegelman and his wife lived in New York City during the attack and lived close to the World
Trade Centers. Spiegelman witnessed the 9/11 terrorist attacks first hand, panicking with his wife and
frantically trying to ensure their children were safe. After the attacks all Americans were affected
differently. Spiegelman drew these pictures and comic strips because he wanted to demonstrate how
families felt during this national tragedy. He spent the following three years making In the Shadow of
No Towers to collect and portray his own particular recollections of 9/11 and the government s
reaction to it. The comic strip is thought to be anti monumental,

Raymond Kolbe s Life And Culture
Raymond Kolbe was born the second son of five (only three of whom will live) to a poor weaver
Julius Kolbe and midwife Maria Dąbroska on January 8, 1894. Raymond was born in Zduńska Wola,
a small town in central Poland. Shortly after his birth, however; they moved to another polish town,
Pabianice, about twenty five miles east of Zduńska Wola. The Kolbes were poor, but their country was
in much worse shape. Poland s lands were split among Russia, Austria, and Prussia. Despite of the
changes, the Kolbes clung to their Polish identity.
Raymond s father Julius said that he always knew his son was going to die a martyr s death because of
an extraordinary event in his childhood. In 1906, when Raymond was 12, he had a vision of the Virgin

In August 1920, Max was sent to a tuberculosis sanatorium in Zakopane. He refrained from work on
the Militia but acted as a chaplain to the sanatorium. Max returned to Cracow before Christmas in
1921 and started work again on the Militia. Max asked his superior for permission to begin publishing
a magazine to spread word of the militia. He received permission, but no financial support. Max s
youngest brother, Joseph, helped Max write the first issue of the magazine. They called it The Knight
of the Immaculata or The Knight for short. They began to give it out on street corners, not requiring
people to pay for one. After doing so for a few issues, they did not have enough money to print
another issue, so Max went to pray in the church for Mary s intercession. Praying hard, Max looked up
and saw a sack with a note on it that said
For my dear mother, Mary Immaculate. Inside was the exact amount due for another issue of The
Knight.
Eventually, Max collapsed. He had been ill in 1922 and was ill again 1926. He was rehospitalized for
about half a year. Because of his illness, he often had trouble breathing and had awful headaches.

Pharmaceutical Companies Stand in the Way of Treatment Essay
Pharmaceutical Companies Stand in the Way of Treatment Abstract This casebook concentrates on the
negative effects that the pharmaceutical industry s trade and production policies have on third world
nations suffering from disease epidemics. My position is that pharmaceutical companies are not
concerned with the health benefits of their drugs, but rather with the market that their drugs generate. I
illustrate this notion by describing the trade policies that pharmaceutical companies influence and the
pharmaceutical companies production policies which concentrate on producing life style drugs rather
than drugs that cure life threatening diseases. Multinational pharmaceutical giants are occupied with
producing drugs that yield the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But this is not necessarily true. Western governments are usually generous about funding drug
industry research. These governments also allow the drug companies to market discoveries and new
drugs that are produced in government and university laboratories. The most expensive aspect of
producing a drug is the pre clinical research, which is performed by the government and universities,
not the drug companies. The Academic Search Premier on the Penrose Library website was the most
useful research tool. Since this casebook topic covers an international concern that is current and at
stasis, it was necessary to use current journal articles in attaining reliable and up to date information.
The process of inquiry and acquiring information about this topic delineated the necessity of
examining several different sources and being a critical reader. In analyzing different sources of
information, it was crucial to note the validity and reliability of the source; many times it was useful to
analyze both sides of an issue in order to gain a balanced understanding of the topic at issue. In 2001,
the discovery of three letters containing anthrax spores caused widespread panic that swept across the
US. Thousands of people flocked to clinics to be tested for possible infection and hundreds were
affected by the shutdown of workplaces and public facilities. Though only a

Pros Of Standardized Testing
The Pros Of Standardized Testing
Standardized tests are a positive way to look at student growth and if students are reaching national
benchmarks. Many standardized tests are a useful tool when deciding what college to attend, for
example, the MCAT is a medical standardized that is required for all admittees into medical school.
Around the country, many children are able to conform to teacher made tests and how to navigate
through them, although with standardized tests, they are raw and able to show if a student is really
struggling in a specific area. Standardized tests are useful in schools across the country because they
help enforce growth and how students are meeting benchmarks, while making it an equal playing field
for all students. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Euglena Research Paper
Euglena
Euglena are unicellular protists, which are organisms made of one cell that is not an animal, plant or
fungus. Most have both plant and animal characteristics. For example, they often have a flagellum,
which is a characteristic of animal cells, for motility and chloroplasts, which are characteristics of
plant cells. They are pear shaped with a flagellum, which looks like a tail.
Trypanosoma Brucei
Trypanosoma Brucei is a parasite which causes a vector borne disease known as the sleeping sickness
which affects vertebrates, which are animals with a backbone or a spine, including humans.

skin rash. When the parasite invades the central nervous system, people experience confusion,

The Church Of New France
One of the many things the settlers of New France bought with them from France into North America
was religion. Historians have argued that the church played huge part in the lives of the people in New
France. Despite being far away from the leaders of the church and thus not directly under their control,
the church still played a role in the lives of the people of New France. By the 1600s Jesuit
missionaries had entered New France and started their attempts to convert the First Nations people. As
more settlers moved into New France it was more difficult for the church to keep its status. They
attempted with various methods to convert more First Nations and keep the European settlers in the
church. However, post 1663, after the creation of the Royal Colony, the issues regarding religion and
the issues it was causing did not decrease.
The primary source being used is a document by Annie Rollo Stagg titled The importance of religion
to woman . Secondary sources include the Role of the Church in New France , The People of New
France , Business and Religion in the Age of New France, 1600 1760: Twenty two Studies , and First
Establishment of the Faith in New France . I will argue that the church in post 1663 New France
played an enormous part of the people residing there, especially women. The church was not a place
for people to worship but politically, socially and economically influenced the post 1663 life in New
France.
The Roman Catholic Church was the exclusive

A Research Study Of Recruiting Cancer Patients From Ubc...
This experiment has some extraneous variables to contemplate including the age of the participant,
presence of others and time of day. These variables require serious consideration to ensure they are not
impacting the results. Since this study is recruiting cancer patients from UBC palliative care centre,
age is an extraneous variable because cancer not only targets the elder population, but young children
as well. The younger patients may be able to perform the exercises more efficiently than the older
patients, which can have significant impacts on the results. In order to control for possible effects of
age, we will limit our sample to palliative patients aged 30 60 years old. Another variable to consider
is the presence of others it has the ability to impact patients performance on selective days. Some
patients may feel more comfortable when they are surrounded by certain people, but not as relaxed
and poised at other times. In order to control for this variable, the researcher will be sure to have the
patients choose who they would like around them while they exercise. Finally, the time of day the
exercise intervention occurs must be taken into consideration. This has the potential to significantly
impact our results because some patients may not be as functional at different times throughout the
day. Therefore, we will specify that the intervention will take place in the morning.
20 palliative cancer patients aged 30 60 will participate in the study. They will be

The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe Essay
The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe s The Pit and the pendulum
demonstrate an arabesque look at the human mind. Part of the terror of The Pit and the Pendulum
stems from the apocalyptic imagery with which Poe establishes his narrative framework. The narrator
of the tale seems not to parallel the characters of Poe s other tales, in that he is very sane and his
torture comes from without rather than from within. Poe has used apocalyptic imagery in many of his
works (Spealght 235). Condemned to torture and death by the black robed, white lipped judges of the
Inquisition in the opening scene of the tale, the narrator observes seven candles, which first dissolve in
his mind into seven angels wearing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fittingly, then, Poe concludes his tale with blaring trumpets, fiery walls, and a thousand thunders ,
apocalyptic images that describe the narrator s deliverance by General LaSalle as a sort of Second
Coming of Christ. Indeed, removed from its allusive context, the narrator s rescue is difficult to
account for since, as David H. Hirsch has pointed out, it is neither foreshadowed in the tale nor
congruent with its overwhelming Beard The Pit and the Pendulum 3 oppression. However, in light of
Revelation 16.15 Behold, I come as a thief the narrator as well as the reader accepts the
unexpectedness of LaSalle s and the narrator s escape. Commentators have of course, recognized Poe
s allusions to Revelation and several apocryphal books of the Bible. Hirsch observes that the final
paragraphs of the tale neatly counterpoint the first by reversing the narrator s loss of hearing, and then
collapse with auditory amplification and expansion. According to Hirsch, the dreamy indeterminate
hum of the opening lines is caught up in the discordant hum of the conclusion; the burr of a mill wheel
is amplified into the thousand thunders, and the collapsing image of the blackness of darkness
supervened is inverted into the expanding image of the fiery walls rushing outward . Hirsch suggests,
moreover, that the outstretched arm of

Tension In Roald Dahl s Lamb To The Slaughter
Tension is a factor of life that is felt intuitively which means that it is hard to define and even harder to
convey, especially on a page. In his work Lamb to the Slaughter Roald Dahl perfectly executes
creating tension within his writing and in doing so within his reader. In his work he creates tension
through the inner and outer conflicts between characters, the meticulous decision of characterization,
and the conscious choice of places irony in the piece.
In the piece Lamb to the Slaughter Roald Dahl naturally creates tension through the inner and outer
conflicts of his characters. In the work Roald Dahl has the wife character, Mary Maloney, say to her
husband, Patrick, But you must eat! I ll fix it anyway, (3) She says this to Patrick even after he
repeatedly tells her to sit down because he is not hungry. This is the first time Mary directly disobeys
her husband. This conflict creates tension because it finally breaks her Patrick s thinning patience in
the story so far, which leads him to break and tell her news that upsets her. Roald Dahl also creates
tension by having Mary kill her husband, which is a conflict with a permanent consequence. On page
5 she thinks, So I ve killed him, this is after Patrick admits something, the details unknown to the
reader, that greatly upsets Mary, and the reader s watch as her honest shock turns into a brief moment
of violence. When Mary hits Patrick over the head with a lamb leg it creates tension because it is the

Employment Tribunals In Australia
In order to properly address the matter of an employee who is suspected of coming into work under
the influence of illegal drugs, we must ensure that we follow the businesses disciplinary processes and
if the process leads to it, we must ensure that, the reason for dismissal falls under one or more of the 5
fair reasons under the Employments Rights Act (1996). These reasons can include: Conduct includes
minor issues such as unauthorised absence to more serious (gross misconduct) issues such as gross

How Did Langston Hughes Influence African American Literature
American literature is a distinct reflection of its time, the Harlem Renaissance period was significant
for its progressive ideas on civil rights. This period was one that expressed the struggles and
oppression that African Americans faced throughout the 1920 s. The Harlem Renaissance brought
forth the everyday struggles, yet highlighted the beauty of a culture cultivated through oppression.
Harlem in New York City became the beacon of African American culture that spread socially aware
music, art, and literature. Harlem became the destination to which approximately 300,000 African
Americans migrated to, while fleeing the South s economic and social strife. Harlem bloomed with
jazz music and fashion making its nightlife the envy of white entrepreneurs. This period produced a
series of activist writers whose work was a stepping stone to civil equality, such as W.E.B. De Bois,
James Weldon Johnson, and the most influential Langston Hughes. Seen as the most influential
activist writer to come out of the Harlem Renaissance, Hughes was the first to incorporate all aspects
of African American culture never shying away from issues even his own culture criticized him for.
He often criticized through his literary work, black middle class Americans who imitated Caucasian
customs and lifestyle. Over the course of his life Langston Hughes created many influential pieces of
literature, however the early work in the start of his career is what brought him the recognition

Ellen Kirschman, author of I Love a FireFighter, suggests proven ways to treat cases of traumatic
stress that is experienced while on the job. Her suggestions include cognitive behavioral therapy,
exercise, medications, and eye movement and desensitization reprocessing, commonly known as
EMDR. In addition to these professional coping options, other coping mechanisms include expressing
yourself and sharing your fears and experience, creating a mission for your life to create meaning, and
distracting yourself which can provide a little temporary relief with something new and engaging to
occupy your thoughts. (p.189) I believe based on this information, it may be more helpful for a
firefighter and other emergency responders to cope via the latter mentioned mechanisms because they
focus more on the individual s fears, experiences, and emotions. Creating meaning in your life and
finding enjoyable hobbies to distract from work can help to unload much of the stress from the job.
Furthermore, researchers tend to agree that expressing your emotion is beneficial for dealing with
stress. According to the authors of the paper Trauma exposed Firefighters , Firefighters and other first
responders often engage in approach oriented coping strategies such as problem focused coping rather
than emotion focused or avoidance coping (p.357) Emotion and avoidance coping mechanisms often
involve seeking emotional support and positive reframing (p.358) By reframing ones view of the
world through positive associations, firefighters and other emergency responders are better equipped
to deal the trauma and stress from being on the job because it is a holistic effort to change their point
of view rather than just trying to deal with one specific

What Does It Means To Be Successful
If you have tried dieting, you know that all diets don t work for everyone. Someone may rave that it s
the best diet ever, and it really does work, it may for them, but not for you. The reason you are
unsuccessful with your diet is because you haven t yet found the one diet that s meant only for you.
Success for a believer is similar to going on a diet, you have to try the one that s meant only for you.
There are numerous publications on success, but it won t work for you, even if many have achieved
their success by applying those strategies. Our success as believers in based on the will of God, which

The Kingdom of God operates somewhat backward, it is in the losing we find our true success. Have
you ever wondered what it would be like, when one day you stand in front of Almighty God? Most
people have misconceptions about God s judgement.
It is not based on your worldly success, how many gold medals you won, how much wisdom,
knowledge or education you acquired? Neither it would be about the wealth you have accumulated. It
is not going to be about how influential you have been, nor about how many books you have written,
or the numerous demons you have cast away. Many will be surprised knowing that true success was
never about them, but all about God.
When Jesus died on the cross it was all about us. Likewise, our lives are meant to be all about
glorifying God, fulfilling His will and purpose for our lives. Live your life then, in such a way, that
when the day comes and you stand before The Son of God, He would say to you, well done my good
and faithful servant, you have succeeded in fulfilling my will and accomplished my purpose for your
life. So we make it our goal to please Him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. For
we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us
for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad (2 Corinthians 5:9 10

Kaiser Wilhelm And Otto Von Bismarck s Policies Differed

World War I Essay Questions
1. Both Kaiser Wilhelm and Otto Von Bismarck s policies differed. In reality, Kaiser based his ideas
and was influenced off of Bismarck. Wilhelm II was mostly concerned with the power of the German
Navy. He consistently tried to get the best of the best for the navy and always got the latest weapons
for them. Also, he attempted to make Germany the predominant world power. His aim to get allies for
Germany was a complete failure. When Kaiser tried to reach out and get help and support from
Britain, he had failed once again. That was due to the fact that he tried already to get colonies in
Africa, The Pacific, and China. At his fault, we were left in isolation and had Austria Hungary as our
only ally. On the other hand, Bismarck s efforts into getting alliances were much more contributive.
Bismarck had began with isolating France and getting Russia and Britain to occasionally check in on
France, while also maintaining good ties with Britain. He essentially had a more complex system in
that area. The only thing Bismarck was known unsuccessful for ,was the decrease in domestic
development for Germany. Kaiser Wilhelm and Otto Von Bismarck constantly disagreed within their
foreign policies. The main disparity among these two men were their ages. Kaiser being the youngest
had completely different political ideologies than Bismarck ( Otto Von Bismarck) In the face of

Analysis Of Scott Momaday s Journey To Rainy Mountain
Introduction
People come from different backgrounds and ancestral foundations. They are at times defined by these
beginnings, and some may end up wanting to know more. Most do not find their ancestral grounding
in their childhood but come to realize it later in life. Many have the advantage of being someone and
identifying with their culture as a basis of their personality. Maintaining proper and adequate
understanding is determined by what one handles and does on a personal, cultural and familial level.
Scott Momaday is a reflection of a person who has been born and lives within the culture. His book,

Part 1 Al Momaday
Looking at the father s memoir and experiences, there is a lot to be discussed because he is a sign of
historical accuracy. He gives an account of how things were in terms of family, leadership and his
existence as a Kiowa man. It gives experiences on how his life was formed around the people of
Kiowa and his obligations to the tribe, nature and family (Momaday 20). His role as a Kiowa man
brings forth his understanding and shows a lot of offerings and activities that happened along ancestral
grounds. It demonstrates the kind of attitude and impression that Momaday had towards his father and
what he regarded him to be in terms of being the head of the family (Momaday 26). It presents the
responsibility that the father took up and other men had within the tribe. The mythical part is mostly
within the experiences and explanations of the father who sets the tone of showing the Kiowa life in a
balanced yet mystical way.
Part 2 Historical Information
The historical information regarding the Kiowa people reflects on the mythological and culture of the
Kiowa people. It sets the tone of identifying the strengths of the tribe, practices and ideas that
developed within the tribe. It also shows a relation of the Kiowa people to nature, other mythical
creatures and how the culture came into existence. It also shows what made the culture of so much
importance to those who practiced it and in what context they felt that they were able to

The Relationship Between Sleep And Social Rhythms Essay
Hypothesis, Methods, Results, and Validity In 2009, researchers, Colleen E. Carney Ph.D., Jack D.
Edinger, Björn Meyer, Linda Lindman, and Tai Istre, published their study called, Daily Activities and
Sleep Quality in College Students . The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between
sleep and social rhythms. The researchers acknowledged that, It has long been recognized that
consistent and qualitatively satisfying sleep is largely dependent on a robust and well entrained
endogenous circadian rhythm (Carney, Edinger, Meyer, Lindman, and Istre, 2009). The researchers
further explained that in their study they were going to attempt to establish a relationship between one
s daily activities and social engagements to his or her sleep quality. The researchers hypothesized that,
self reported good sleepers would report more daily activities, show earlier daily scheduling of their
social rhythms, have social rhythms characterized by greater regularity, and be involved in more
activities with active social engagement than would poor sleepers (Carney et al., 2009). To test their
hypothesis the researchers gather 243 willing participants between the ages of 18 and 39 years. The
sample was mostly female and Caucasian, but other ethnicities and races were present to ensure a

The Benefits Of Bilingualism And The Human Brain
The human brain is capable of the most remarkable abilities. It doesn t just manage the human body,
but it also allows us to communicate by processing, interpreting, and understanding language. Human
beings use language as the main source of communication, it allows an individual to express
her/himself with greater precision. Each country has their own language, and with language comes
different accents and dialects. Speaking one language alone is enough for the brain to develop, as that
language is being constantly used. When it comes to speaking two languages, that s when the brain is
strengthened, the individual is more intelligent and is able to acquire knowledge more easily. The use
of two languages is described by the phenomenon of bilingualism. The effects of bilingualism are
linked to the functional neuroplasticity the ability of the brain to modify its structure and function with
experience. This neuroplastic effect leads to changes in personality in which a bilinguist is capable of
not just switching languages but switching personalities as well. One can argue that it takes more than
being bilingual to change brain activity and function, but most would agree that the benefits of
bilingualism outweigh the drawbacks. Advanced technology has shown that bilingualism has
improved cognitive control, changed brain activity over time to strengthen its neurons, and protect
against age related diseases. A major recent discovery over the effects of bilingualism is a

Political Parties And Interest Groups
The goal of this paper is to demonstrate how political parties and interest groups are able to get
citizens to participate in politics and political party participants or interest group members. This is a
comparison and contrast paper. The following will be a comparison between political parties and
interest groups. Three points will be mentioned. The first point will be the purpose, the second will be
the role they play and finally three strategies parties and interest groups use to get people to
participate.
A political party is a group of well dedicated people who unite to win elections, operate the
government, and determine public policy. Political parties are fairly different from interest groups.
Interest groups want to influence not necessarily run the government. Political parties have numerous
key purposes. These purposes include run and select a good candidate for office. Along with
monitoring power added by several other parties and also advising citizens on a lot of issues. There are
two political parties in the U.S. which are Republican and Democrat. These two parties maneuver the
national and local level. So, basically the purpose of a political party is to create something noticeable
for someone so that more people can come together and help their cause.
Political Parties have many roles one of the roles is that they choose candidates for office. Members
and individual politicians made a group of aliens that cooperates with their determination to pass and

Voter Registration Essay
Voter registration is a simple process of enrollment that grants permission to vote in elections. Voting
is a right by the United States citizen, which is not exercised by many people. For this reason, the
United States lacks representation by its people in where the citizens have the power to make a

determine the fate of the country. Reasons for an individual not registering are not well informed, lack
of interest in politics, and believe their vote does not count due to the Electoral College. However,

Developmental Theories in Juno Essay
The movie Juno is not only an excellent representation of film and the creative process coming

themselves in the lives of the characters, but it is also an excellent example of the developmental
process. This is because the movie reflects not only the development of its protagonist Juno MacGuff
and her emotional growth and development, but also her physical development throughout her
pregnancy.
Juno begins with the adolescent protagonist, sixteen year old Juno MacGuff, realizing that her one

Importance Of Abolition Of Child Labour
The effective abolition of child labour is one of the most urgent challenges of our time. Today, we
have a better grasp of the size and the shape of the problem. More than 200 million child labourers
worldwide, some 180 million are now suspected to be toiling in the worst forms of child labour those
activities that the global community has unanimously agreed are inexcusable under any circumstances
and must be eliminated without de lay. The persistence on such a scale of this violation of children s
basic human rights casts a shadow over us all. The past decade has seen an unprecedented
convergence of thought and action around this cause, in recognition of the fact that the abolition of
child labour is an issue at the heart of social and economic development and not at its margins. The
ILO s International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC) has, over its ten years of

A New Commitment Period For Kyoto Protocol
In the 19th century, an awareness began to dawn that accumulated carbon dioxide in the Earth s
atmosphere could create a greenhouse effect and increase the temperature of the planet. A perceptible
process in that direction had already begun a side effect of the industrial age and its production of
carbon dioxide and other such greenhouse gases.
By the middle of the 20th century, it was becoming clear that human action had significantly increased
the production of these gases, and the process of global warming was accelerating. Today, nearly all
scientists agree that we must stop and reverse this process now or face a devastating cascade of natural
disasters that will change life on earth as we know it.

We must limit global temperature rise to 2 degrees. We are far from there, and even that is enough to
cause dire consequences. If we continue along the current path, we are close to a 6 degree increase .
Too many leaders seem content to keep climate change at arm s length, and in its policy silo. Too few

Uranus Experiments
Before being known as a planet Uranus was mistaken for a star. Probably the first time that Uranus
was observed was by Hipparchus of Nicaea. Hipparchus did mistaken Uranus for a star. Hipparchus
may have recorded it as a star for his star catalogue that was later incorporated into Ptolemy s
Almagest (1). William Herschel first observed Uranus on March 13, 1781 from the garden of his
house at 19 New King Street in Bath, Somerset, England. Herschel engaged in a series of observations
on the parallax of the fixed stars. Using a telescope of his own design.
When William first wrote on his journal about the discovery that he made, he said that he had found a
comet. He believed that he had found a comet, but he was also comparing it to a planet. So, William
was wondering if what he found was a comet or if it was a planet. William Herschel wrote to
Astronomer Royal, Nevil Maskelyne saying: I don t know what to call it. It is as likely to be a regular
planet moving in an orbit nearly circular to the sun as a Comet moving in a very eccentric ellipsis. I

The Major Themes In Homer s The Odyssey
Consciously or not, we are all on a quest for answers, trying to learn the lessons of life. The famous
psychologist Elisabeth Kubler Ross once stated this and it is true about The Odyssey. It is one of the
many themes found in Homer s Epic poem The Odyssey. Among others, some of the themes I saw in
it were the following: sometimes you must be humbled to succeed, just because something is bigger
than you doesn t mean it s better, and don t let pride overtake you. The one big themes of the latter
part of The Odyssey is sometimes you must be humbled to succeed. This is seen in The Odyssey when

asked who did it, he said nohbdy did it (9.making all his neighbours think he was crying wolf to them.
This is also seen towards the end of the book when Odysseus is fighting his former followers and even
though they have the strength in numbers to beat him, Odysseus still comes out on top. This can be

Captain Ahab s Sermon
Do human beings have free will or free choice and if not who or what shapes human destiny?
(McSweeney 9) Herman Melville utilizes Father Mapple s sermon in his nineteenth century epic novel
Moby Dick, to illustrate the duality of mankind. Mortal man pursues his own singular interests with
selfish intent; however, God has prevailing intentions, which are often beyond the comprehension of
the individual. Melville expands and elaborates this theme throughout his epic work. The sermon is an
omen for the dynamic action of the novel, which is revealed in Captain Ahab s megalomaniacal
pursuit of the white whale. No person, ship or force of nature can sway Captain Ahab from his selfish
ambition. He is willing to risk his crew, career, and even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

women s shoes, and all was quiet again, and every eye on the preacher. The repetition of the s sound
sets the scene for the sermon. The Reverend rings out in Melville s grand self echoing style. Once
again he sets the mood, and forces the reader to be attentive. Humble Father Mapple kneels in the

the sea in the belly of a whale. After completing the devout prayer Mapple breaks into a mariners

San Pizarro, A Spanish Explorer And Conquistador
Francisco Pizarro was a Spanish explorer and conquistador who is famous for conquering the Inca

as navigational skills (Yost). All these skills were very useful and beneficial in terms of helping him
achieve his goal of crossing the ocean with a small army in order to obtain the riches and wealth of the
Incas. In my opinion Francisco Pizarro was one of the great people who determined and altered the

During their trip they discovered what we now know as the Pacific ocean, but Balboa spotted it first
which is why he is credited for its discovery (New World Encyclopedia). Pizarro had heard of Hernan
Cortes, who conquered the Aztec people and acquired a vast amount of wealth and power. Pizarro
wanted to do something just like that, so he set his sites on the Inca Empire in Peru, South America.
He had learned of the Incas through a rumor from the South American native peoples, they told him of
a vast empire full of precious metals (Yost).
Pizarro now begins to do what he did to change the course of history. In 1524 he took his first
expedition to South America to explore the land and people who lived there. It ended up being very
unsuccessful because of the many problems they had to deal with, such as bad weather, lack of food,
and conflict with the native people (New World Encyclopedia). In 1526 Pizarro set up for a second
expedition, which ended up being much more successful than the first. They were able to go much
more inland and saw the Incas and the riches that they possessed, which supported what Pizarro heard
before (New World Encyclopedia). Here is where things really begin to change. Pizarro didn t want to
take anymore chances, so for a third expedition he did everything in his power to make sure it would
go right. In 1532 Pizarro left on his third expedition to South America and once he reached an Incan

Weber, the Spirit of Capitalism and the Protestant Ethic
The protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism, by M. Weber
I/ What is the spirit of capitalism?
According to Marx s theory, labour is what define oneself in the world and give meaning to one s life.
Weber emphasized that theory when he published in 1904 The protestant ethic and the spirit of
capitalism .
Contrary to what if often thought, capitalism is not an immoderate and immoral seek for money, but a
rational and controlled way of doing business.
Profitability, which could be defined as the efficiency at generating earnings, is the mean purpose of
the capitalistic state of mind. Limitless avidity is not a characteristic of the capitalism spirit but it often

Thus, Protestantism appeals to seek for overall happiness through work and labour.
At least, Weber s theory also states that work plays a saving part in Protestants life, and more
specifically offers them a chance to get to an after life and helps them to stand the pressure of the
principle of predestination.
What is predestination? The Protestant faith states that only few elected people can have access to the
after life, but unlike Catholicism, there are no criteria on which you can rely on to be sure you will get
to Heaven. Hence, to be among the chosen ones, it is a duty to consider oneself chosen, and in order to
attain that self confidence, intense labour is strongly advised by pastors.
Predestination also means that there are no hopes for forgiveness, unlike the Catholic faith. One
cannot pretend to after life without an entire life of hard and intense labour.
Thus, work is for Protestants an act of justification of their faith, a mean to struggle against evil and
sin, and a way to get to after life. This explains why labour has the utmost importance in Protestant s
faith. It is believed that God helps those who help themselves: by working hard, Protestants create
their own salvation.
One s duty at work, which is for capitalistic culture a mix between the search of efficiency,
profitability and sense of investment, was influenced and eased by the Protestants and

Social Vulnerability In Emergency Management
When a disaster hits an area it does not discriminate on where it hits or who is affected. When it
comes to effective emergency management it is important that managers take into account certain
preimpact conditions in order to properly prepare, mitigate, respond and recover from a disaster
regardless of the magnitude. One preimpact condition that is important to consider is the Social

how disasters or external stressors can impact them (Lindell et al, 2006, pg. 153). It is important for
emergency personnel to understand the social vulnerability of a community in order to alleviate the

In this particular passage, Emily Brontë utilizes syntax to illustrate Heathcliff s obsessive love for the late Catherine Linton. Brontë expresses Heathcliff s deep, hidden emotions through the use of syntax. In the beginning, few questions are asked by Heathcliff, such as if she died like a saint, to convey his curiosity about his true love s death (Brontë 164). After doing so for a few issues, they did not have enough money to print another issue, so Max went to pray in the church for Mary s intercession. Praying hard, Max looked up and saw a sack with a note on it that said For my dear mother, Mary Immaculate. Inside was the exact amount due for another issue of The Knight. Eventually, Max collapsed. He had been ill in 1922 and was ill again 1926. He was rehospitalized for about half a year. Because of his illness, he often had trouble breathing and had awful headaches. Pharmaceutical Companies Stand in the Way of Treatment Essay Pharmaceutical Companies Stand in the Way of Treatment Abstract This casebook concentrates on the negative effects that the pharmaceutical industry s trade and production policies have on third world nations suffering from disease epidemics. My position is that pharmaceutical companies are not concerned with the health benefits of their drugs, but rather with the market that their drugs generate. I illustrate this notion by describing the trade policies that pharmaceutical companies influence and the pharmaceutical companies production policies which concentrate on producing life style drugs rather than drugs that cure life threatening diseases. Multinational pharmaceutical giants are occupied with producing drugs that yield the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But this is not necessarily true. Western governments are usually generous about funding drug industry research. These governments also allow the drug companies to market discoveries and new drugs that are produced in government and university laboratories. The most expensive aspect of producing a drug is the pre clinical research, which is performed by the government and universities, not the drug companies. Historians have argued that the church played huge part in the lives of the people in New France. Despite being far away from the leaders of the church and thus not directly under their control, the church still played a role in the lives of the people of New France. By the 1600s Jesuit missionaries had entered New France and started their attempts to convert the First Nations people. As more settlers moved into New France it was more difficult for the church to keep its status. They attempted with various methods to convert more First Nations and keep the European settlers in the church. However, post 1663, after the creation of the Royal Colony, the issues regarding religion and the issues it was causing did not decrease. Secondary sources include the Role of the Church in New France , The People of New France , Business and Religion in the Age of New France, 1600 1760: Twenty two Studies , and First Establishment of the Faith in New France . • 10. A Research Study Of Recruiting Cancer Patients From Ubc... This experiment has some extraneous variables to contemplate including the age of the participant, presence of others and time of day. These variables require serious consideration to ensure they are not impacting the results. Since this study is recruiting cancer patients from UBC palliative care centre, age is an extraneous variable because cancer not only targets the elder population, but young children as well. The younger patients may be able to perform the exercises more efficiently than the older patients, which can have significant impacts on the results. In order to control for possible effects of age, we will limit our sample to palliative patients aged 30 60 years old. Another variable to consider is the presence of others it has the ability to impact patients performance on selective days. Some patients may feel more comfortable when they are surrounded by certain people, but not as relaxed and poised at other times. In order to control for this variable, the researcher will be sure to have the patients choose who they would like around them while they exercise. Finally, the time of day the exercise intervention occurs must be taken into consideration. This has the potential to significantly impact our results because some patients may not be as functional at different times throughout the day. Therefore, we will specify that the intervention will take place in the morning. 20 palliative cancer patients aged 30 60 will participate in the study. They will be ... • 11. The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe Essay The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe s The Pit and the pendulum demonstrate an arabesque look at the human mind. Part of the terror of The Pit and the Pendulum stems from the apocalyptic imagery with which Poe establishes his narrative framework. The narrator of the tale seems not to parallel the characters of Poe s other tales, in that he is very sane and his torture comes from without rather than from within. Poe has used apocalyptic imagery in many of his works (Spealght 235). Condemned to torture and death by the black robed, white lipped judges of the Inquisition in the opening scene of the tale, the narrator observes seven candles, which first dissolve in his mind into seven angels wearing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fittingly, then, Poe concludes his tale with blaring trumpets, fiery walls, and a thousand thunders , apocalyptic images that describe the narrator s deliverance by General LaSalle as a sort of Second Coming of Christ. Indeed, removed from its allusive context, the narrator s rescue is difficult to account for since, as David H. Hirsch has pointed out, it is neither foreshadowed in the tale nor congruent with its overwhelming Beard The Pit and the Pendulum 3 oppression. However, in light of Revelation 16.15 Behold, I come as a thief the narrator as well as the reader accepts the unexpectedness of LaSalle s and the narrator s escape. Commentators have of course, recognized Poe s allusions to Revelation and several apocryphal books of the Bible. Hirsch observes that the final paragraphs of the tale neatly counterpoint the first by reversing the narrator s loss of hearing, and then collapse with auditory amplification and expansion. According to Hirsch, the dreamy indeterminate hum of the opening lines is caught up in the discordant hum of the conclusion; the burr of a mill wheel is amplified into the thousand thunders, and the collapsing image of the blackness of darkness supervened is inverted into the expanding image of the fiery walls rushing outward . Hirsch suggests, moreover, that the outstretched arm of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the piece Lamb to the Slaughter Roald Dahl naturally creates tension through the inner and outer conflicts of his characters. In the work Roald Dahl has the wife character, Mary Maloney, say to her husband, Patrick, But you must eat! How Did Langston Hughes Influence African American Literature American literature is a distinct reflection of its time, the Harlem Renaissance period was significant for its progressive ideas on civil rights. This period was one that expressed the struggles and oppression that African Americans faced throughout the 1920 s. The Harlem Renaissance brought forth the everyday struggles, yet highlighted the beauty of a culture cultivated through oppression. Harlem in New York City became the beacon of African American culture that spread socially aware music, art, and literature. Harlem became the destination to which approximately 300,000 African Americans migrated to, while fleeing the South s economic and social strife. Harlem bloomed with jazz music and fashion making its nightlife the envy of white entrepreneurs. This period produced a series of activist writers whose work was a stepping stone to civil equality, such as W.E.B. De Bois, James Weldon Johnson, and the most influential Langston Hughes. Seen as the most influential activist writer to come out of the Harlem Renaissance, Hughes was the first to incorporate all aspects of African American culture never shying away from issues even his own culture criticized him for. He often criticized through his literary work, black middle class Americans who imitated Caucasian customs and lifestyle. In addition to these professional coping options, other coping mechanisms include expressing yourself and sharing your fears and experience, creating a mission for your life to create meaning, and distracting yourself which can provide a little temporary relief with something new and engaging to occupy your thoughts. (p.189) I believe based on this information, it may be more helpful for a firefighter and other emergency responders to cope via the latter mentioned mechanisms because they focus more on the individual s fears, experiences, and emotions. Wilhelm II was mostly concerned with the power of the German Navy. He consistently tried to get the best of the best for the navy and always got the latest weapons for them. Also, he attempted to make Germany the predominant world power. His aim to get allies for Germany was a complete failure. When Kaiser tried to reach out and get help and support from Britain, he had failed once again. That was due to the fact that he tried already to get colonies in Africa, The Pacific, and China. At his fault, we were left in isolation and had Austria Hungary as our only ally. On the other hand, Bismarck s efforts into getting alliances were much more contributive. Bismarck had began with isolating France and getting Russia and Britain to occasionally check in on France, while also maintaining good ties with Britain. He essentially had a more complex system in that area. The only thing Bismarck was known unsuccessful for ,was the decrease in domestic development for Germany. It doesn t just manage the human body, but it also allows us to communicate by processing, interpreting, and understanding language. Human beings use language as the main source of communication, it allows an individual to express her/himself with greater precision. Each country has their own language, and with language comes different accents and dialects. Speaking one language alone is enough for the brain to develop, as that language is being constantly used. When it comes to speaking two languages, that s when the brain is strengthened, the individual is more intelligent and is able to acquire knowledge more easily. The use of two languages is described by the phenomenon of bilingualism. The effects of bilingualism are linked to the functional neuroplasticity the ability of the brain to modify its structure and function with experience. This neuroplastic effect leads to changes in personality in which a bilinguist is capable of not just switching languages but switching personalities as well. One can argue that it takes more than being bilingual to change brain activity and function, but most would agree that the benefits of bilingualism outweigh the drawbacks. • 30. Importance Of Abolition Of Child Labour The effective abolition of child labour is one of the most urgent challenges of our time. Today, we have a better grasp of the size and the shape of the problem. More than 200 million child labourers worldwide, some 180 million are now suspected to be toiling in the worst forms of child labour those activities that the global community has unanimously agreed are inexcusable under any circumstances and must be eliminated without de lay. The persistence on such a scale of this violation of children s basic human rights casts a shadow over us all. The past decade has seen an unprecedented convergence of thought and action around this cause, in recognition of the fact that the abolition of child labour is an issue at the heart of social and economic development and not at its margins. The ILO s International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC) has, over its ten years of existence, become the largest single technical cooperation programme of the Organization. The ILO will mark the first World Day against Child Labour on 12 June 2002. Hipparchus did mistaken Uranus for a star. Hipparchus may have recorded it as a star for his star catalogue that was later incorporated into Ptolemy s Almagest (1). William Herschel first observed Uranus on March 13, 1781 from the garden of his house at 19 New King Street in Bath, Somerset, England. Herschel engaged in a series of observations on the parallax of the fixed stars. Using a telescope of his own design. When William first wrote on his journal about the discovery that he made, he said that he had found a comet. He believed that he had found a comet, but he was also comparing it to a planet. So, William was wondering if what he found was a comet or if it was a planet. William Herschel wrote to Astronomer Royal, Nevil Maskelyne saying: I don t know what to call it. (McSweeney 9) Herman Melville utilizes Father Mapple s sermon in his nineteenth century epic novel Moby Dick, to illustrate the duality of mankind. Mortal man pursues his own singular interests with selfish intent; however, God has prevailing intentions, which are often beyond the comprehension of the individual. Melville expands and elaborates this theme throughout his epic work. The sermon is an omen for the dynamic action of the novel, which is revealed in Captain Ahab s megalomaniacal pursuit of the white whale. Contrary to what if often thought, capitalism is not an immoderate and immoral seek for money, but a rational and controlled way of doing business. Thus, Protestantism appeals to seek for overall happiness through work and labour. At least, Weber s theory also states that work plays a saving part in Protestants life, and more specifically offers them a chance to get to an after life and helps them to stand the pressure of the principle of predestination. What is predestination? The Protestant faith states that only few elected people can have access to the after life, but unlike Catholicism, there are no criteria on which you can rely on to be sure you will get to Heaven. Hence, to be among the chosen ones, it is a duty to consider oneself chosen, and in order to attain that self confidence, intense labour is strongly advised by pastors. Predestination also means that there are no hopes for forgiveness, unlike the Catholic faith. One cannot pretend to after life without an entire life of hard and intense labour. Thus, work is for Protestants an act of justification of their faith, a mean to struggle against evil and sin, and a way to get to after life. This explains why labour has the utmost importance in Protestant s faith. It is believed that God helps those who help themselves: by working hard, Protestants create their own salvation. One s duty at work, which is for capitalistic culture a mix between the search of efficiency, profitability and sense of investment, was influenced and eased by the Protestants and ...
