Problems Associated With Pipe Breaks
The problems associated with pipe breaks are economic, reduce reliability and reduce water quality.
The cost of replacing or repairing a pipe can be split into capital costs (supplying and laying the new
pipe), maintenance costs (repairing and preventing failure in the system), operating costs (electricity
and filtering costs) and damage costs (property damage, inconvenience, loss of amenity, health risks
and environmental costs). (Dandy Engelhardt, 2001) All of these costs can be difficult to accurately
predict, which may be necessary when consulting with management about whether or not to replace a
pipe. Pipe bursts in commercial areas and along main roads also have higher failure costs as the
interruption the failure will have on the traffic and potential 3rd party damage will be greater. A
rational decision needs to be made into at what point it is more cost effective to replace the pipe than
letting water run out of the cracks. The cost of a repair = crew+ equipment+ sleeve + repaving +
overhead costs. Figure 2 Cost breakdown of repairing pipes (in US dollars) While the above figure
gives a rough estimate of what each portion of the repair will cost, the variables were calculated in
1982 in America, and protocols may have changed since then, or be different in New Zealand than it
was in America at the time of the study. However, this was the only literature available that considered
breaking down the cost of repair. Figure 3 Repair and Replacement Costs

The Main Collective Theory Of Functionalist Theories Essay
The main collective theme in functionalist theories is the ability to look at society as a whole, rather
than making judgements on purely an individual s actions and the motives behind them. In
continuation, firm believers of the ideology that everything in society has a purpose and a designated
role in order for the collective society, to work cohesively and function. The explanation for this
comes from Durkheim, a sociologist who placed importance in consensus to achieve the need for
social order. These concepts can be defined as people within a society, who have a tendency to be
selfish, but by having various institutions within society, they are able to obtain social order pass on
norms, values and morals. Crime can be functional when the rates are low, but dysfunctional to society
when the rates are too high. Furthermore he believed that crime was inevitable in society, because
crime and deviance is the product of a lack of attachment to the prevailing values that were shared
among a collective society. Durkheim widely argued that people were all individuals with different
experiences, so consequently not everyone will inevitably share the same values. Without these shared
norms and values being passed on the prospect of social order cannot be obtained as there will not be a
collective conformity towards them and which is therefore enforced by various institutions and
structures. For example, if a child comes from a working class family or one which does not follow

The Faerie Queene Essay
The poem, The Faerie Queene , is a story about a courageous knight who goes through great trials and
fights monsters. This in itself is entertaining but, it also has many allegorical references to Christianity.
Many times Spenser talks about things when in reality he s really talking something closer to home.
For instance, this faerie land he talks about sounds like he is referring to England, the country where
he s from. Also, the title Faerie Queene itself is seems to represent Queen Elizabeth, the Queen of
England. Redcrosse, the hero of the poem, is a major part of this allegory. He is called the Knight of
Holinesse which is a reference to being holy and worshiping God. He represents the lonely Christian

As Redcrosse and Una travel on their way, things are fine and both are kept in tact.
Redcrosse is first introduced to evil when fighting the dragon, Error. When fighting the dragon,
Spenser writes, Her vomit full of bookes and papers was (177). These papers represent Roman
Catholic propaganda that was put out in Spenser s time, against Queen Elizabeth. This shows the
allegory Spencer was trying to put forth in writing this poem. After defeating the dragon, Redcrosse
and Una travel looking for the right path, when it starts to get dark and they find a place to stay, with a
hermit in his inn. When they fall asleep, we find out who this hermit is, Archimago, an evil sorcerer.
He conjures up two spirits to trouble Redcrosse. One of the spirits goes into his dreams and makes him
dream of love and lust, when he awakes; he is lying next to the other spirit who is disguised as Una,
who asks for a kiss from him. He turns it down, and falls back asleep. Then Archimago takes the spirit
disguised as Una and lays it in a bed, and takes the other spirit and disguises it as a young man.
Redcrosse awakes and sees this and is furious and decides to leave without her. The mission
Archimago was out to accomplish had worked and he had separated holiness and faith. Now without
faith, Redcrosse goes out and is all on his own. He travels on until he meets another knight, Sansfoy,

Essay about The Maori Culture
The Maori Culture
Introduction The following paper examines the history and religion of the ancient Maori people. It is
my belief that exploration of traditional belief systems and ritualistic practices will lead to a greater
understanding of the Maori culture in present day New Zealand. The objective of the paper is to
illustrate the Maoris unique perception and spiritual connection with their natural environment.
Brief Maori History
The Maori, Children of Heaven , are the indigenous people of New Zealand. It has been thought that
Polynesian navigator Kupe, discovered New Zealand in 950 AD, and named the island Aotearoa, Land
of the long white cloud .1 The Maori migrated to New Zealand from the tropical islands of ... Show

The traditional legend begins with Rangi (the sky father) and Papa (the earth mother) uniting to give
birth to numerous offspring: gods of the sea, forest, wind, wild food, planted food, and mankind.5
Once born, the children constantly quarreled with one another in the darkness and finally decided to
separate their parents to create light. The god of the wind, opposed to the idea, fled to the sky where
his anger manifested into thunder and lightening. Disregarding his brother s opinion, the god of the
forest successfully separated his parents loving embrace. The disconnection enabled life to flourish
and thrive throughout the land. Unfortunately, Rangi and Papa were forever separated. Rangi s
constant flow of tears filled the oceans and lakes. To this day, many Maori believe that Rangi and Papa
s infinite sorrow is responsible for the dew, mist and rain.5
Maori religion is largely based on the ancient legend of Rangi and Papa. The religion promotes a deep
connection and respect for nature. It is their belief that all life possesses mauri (life force), wairau
(spirit), and mana (power, influence, and charisma).3 This universal life force is traditionally
celebrated, passed down, and remembered

Persepolis Internal Conflict
When I saw my aunt and uncle walk into the waiting room, fresh tear stains streaked upon their
cheeks, I knew. When my uncle opened his mouth to say something and nothing came out but a child
like squeal, my heart was torn in half. When someone finally said the words she s gone to the family
members that had just arrived, getting my extremities cut off of my body one by one would have most
certainly hurt less. I shut down and sat in that too clean smelling hospital room, little by little people
began to say their good byes to each other and leave, while I just sat. My grandpa walked in and I
looked up at the red neon clock on the wall to see that a hour had passed. Without saying a word, he
motioned and walked with me out of the room to the end of the hallway where my sister and cousin
were sitting. The corner where the four of us sat, you could look out the windows into a sea of city ...

torturous labyrinth of thoughts that there is no clear escape from. Sitting on my bed trying to sleep that

Use Of Writing Used By The Missionaries Of Josiah Venture
and observed the larger purpose they all serve as a whole. I gathered many primary sources that were
written in different points of time. I was able to make sense of much of the data from my past
experience with support raising. I have spent several summers in the states with my parents as they
use these methods of support raising so I myself am also very familiar with many of Josiah Venture s
methods.
Results The results of this study show the importance of all of these forms of writing used by the
missionaries of Josiah Venture. It is important to realize that the supporters of all of these missionaries
are mainly residence of the United States and other European countries. The strategies and roles of
these writing types may not apply to every culture a certain missionary communicates with. However,
I the values and meaning behind these methods likely apply to all cultures.

The Effects Of Premarital Sex On Children And Young Adults
Innocence Lost When God created man and woman, his sole purpose was for them to be fruitful and
multiply. Sex was created by God and meant for marriage. Therefore, woman valued their chastity and
would not do a disservice to their bodies. Premarital sex should not be practice because it leads to
unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and loss of innocence. In 1275, England
established the age of consent to be 12 to prevent older men from ravishing the young maidens to
ensure their chastity remained undamaged until marriage ( Age of Consent ). Although the age of
consent law is confusing the most important matter is to keep our children and young adults safe ( Age

The rate of illegitimate births in the United States has risen sharply since the early 1970s. In the 1940s
fewer than five percent of the total births were out of wedlock. By the early 2000s, according to
statistics compiled by the Center for Health Statistics at the U.S. HEALTH AND HUMAN

Northern Abolitionist Movement Dbq Essay
Moshe Fogelman
DBQ 2 C Starting with the Atlantic slave trade in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, in which slaves were
brutally transported in the middle passage from Africa to America, slavery had an important role in the
American economy, but differed in volume by region. However, as the colonies declared their
independence in 1776, a gradual anti slavery movement began in the North as many formed negative
opinions about the Southern Peculiar Institution of a slavery based economy. Various issues and ideas
from 1776 to 1852 caused this gradual Northern abolitionist movement: political intervention,
economic inabilities and threats, social anxieties and intervention, and fundamental moral ideas
respectively reflect the thesis.

The Liberator, William Lloyd Garrisons radical newspaper, proposed and encouraged immediate
abolition of slavery (Doc E), while other publications indirectly sympathized slaves and gained
popularity by revealing and polarizing cruelties. For example, Harriet Booker wrote Uncle Tom s
Cabin (Doc J), which became vastly popular, to tell the story of the awful slave trade and its
devastating impact on families, and Fredrick Douglas, a former slave, wrote an autobiography
intricately depicting his personal memories of his owner s cruelties (Doc G). Gaining popularity in
America and Europe, many newly informed Northerners contributed and strengthened the abolitionist
movement. Although Southerners continued to disregard these messages, Northerners new
sympathetic and personal awareness of the treatment of slaves fueled the gradual abolitionist

The Physics of Bridges Essay
Physics of Bridges
The physics behind bridges is more complex than first meets the eye. To assure that a bridge is well
supported many concepts must be understood and used in the correct manner.
What is a bridge?
A bridge is a complex structure allowing passage across an obstacle: a structure that is built above and
across a river, road, or other obstacle to allow people or vehicles to cross it.
Bridge forms
There are four major forms of bridges: beam, truss, arch, and suspension.
A beam bridge, also known as a girder bridge, contains a horizontal beam supported by 2 piers at each
end. The beam pushes down on the piers, which weakens the overall bridge. These simplistic bridges
are the shortest of all types due to the lack of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Above the bridge, a structure of the same pattern is placed to support the bridge from above. At the
ends of each bridge, there are two similar trusses. This ensures that the bridge stays together, even
when large amounts of weights cross it. By allowing more weight to cross, these bridges can be longer
than beam bridges (they can be up to 500 meters). Forces are the focus of these bridges; each bar
exerts a pushing or pulling force without bending. These forces allows the lightweight bridge to stay
sturdy without collapsing as each steel bar pushes or pulls in the correct direction. Due to this stability,
these bridges are often found over places with unstable ground. Anything from cars to trains are able
to cross over these types of bridges without issues.
There are 4 major concepts in building a bridge that builders must pay attention to; span type, material
of the bridge, the placement of the travel surface in relation to the structure, and the form of the
bridge. When considering all of these concepts, builders can effectively construct a safe and sturdy
bridge.
Newton s 3rd Law
One of the most vital concepts in bridge construction is Newton s 3rd Law. This law states: For every
action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Summary Of Hurt By Alden Nowlan
The short story Hurt by Alden Nowlan offers a glimpse into the effect of childhood relations. The
story is a recollection about the narrator, Skip s, childhood friend, Stevie, and how he interacted with
the people around him. Stevie lives a difficult life but learns from the hardships instead of turning
bitter. The most influential relationship children have in their early life is with their parents. In Hurt
Stevie s father does not take care of him and just let s him do what he wants. This has made their
relationship hard and has also caused Stevie to be very hard on himself. He is smart but afraid of
others hurting him. However this fear has not prevented him from making friends with Skip, in their
friendship he is very kind and teaches him about life. The way Stevie sees himself and his
relationships with others have shaped him into an intelligent but closed off person. The most
significant relationship in Stevie s life was with his father because he spent most of his time with him.

Beethoven Piano Sonata Analysis
Beethoven was one of the most influential composers of the late classical era. Of all the forms of
music he composed one constant during Beethoven s career were his piano sonatas, which were
composed during his early, middle, and late periods. These sonatas far exceeded those created by
composers before and are considered to be the bridge between salon music and the concert hall for
solo piano repertoire. The early sonatas follow the same traditions established by Mozart and Haydn
and by the end of the late period are radically different from conventional form. The late sonatas, Op.
101, 106, 109, 110, and 111, are distinctly different from the other sonatas that came before in their
style, forms, and composition. The pieces that I have chosen are the last five piano sonatas from
Beethoven s late period. These pieces are reflective of the changes of Beethoven s compositional style
as in his older age he began to stretch the limits of the classical style. The piano sonatas are reflective
of what he was doing in all of his later works and are sort of condensed versions that still show the
same ideas. Because piano sonatas were composed throughout his lifetime, they can be interpreted as
a timeline of the changes in Beethoven s style of composing, particularly in the late sonatas.
Beethoven had never been a very rapid composer and these five sonatas were the chief output of six
years of work in the second to last decade of his life. Beethoven s increasing deafness was a major

Additionally, it is clear that internships not only improve the quality of human resources; it also
increases these resources by bringing to light motivations and skills within the individual that might
otherwise be considered uncultivated and undeveloped. Throughout the research conducted the
ultimate goal is to establish an efficient and effective internship program that will benefit the
organization and the intern as well. The purpose of the implementation of an internship program
within the selected organization is due to the lack of a formal process or structure for the intern when
direct inquiries are made to the employer. The research throughout this endeavor will be conducted
through the utilization of books, journals, and written surveys, and credible internet sources.

A Writers Style Essay
The Pulitzer Prize winning writer N. Scott Momaday has become known as a very distinctive writer
who depicts the stories of the Native American life in almost poetic ways. He does an excellent job of
transporting the reader from the black and white pages of a book, to a world where every detail is
pointed out and every emotion felt when reading one of Momaday s books or other writings. This
style of writing that Momaday uses is very evident in his work The Way to Rainy Mountain, and made
even more apparent by reading a review of the book House Made of Dawn found on a web site run by
HarperCollins Publishers.

One aspect of the essay The Way to Rainy Mountain that I found somewhat distracting was when
Momaday would move off of the obvious aspect of his journey home. Even though I very much
enjoyed the amazing descriptions that he used in telling of the lands from where his people came, I
found it hard to grasp the purpose behind the side stories that were being told. I had latched onto the
story of him returning home to his grandmother s grave since that was the first aspect presented to me
as the reader. Once I had read the text over and studied it a little more deeply, I realized that the
purpose of the story was not to tell of Momaday s journey back to rainy mountain, but to tell the story
of the Kiowa s journey to Rainy Mountain. I thought it was a little distracting the first time I read
because I was distracted by all of the information that Momaday was telling about the Kiowa people
and their history. I kept expecting to hear of his trip back to Rainy Mountain and what he was
experiencing during this time. As I said before, it was not until I went back and reread the essay did I
catch on about the true point to the story. This might have been avoided if Momaday had made it
clearer that the focus of the story was on the Kiowa people and not his journey back to see his
grandmother s grave. Once I understood this

The Benefits Of Imminent Domain
America is renowned for the honorable rights that she gives her people and it is commonplace to hear
her referred to as the land of the free . The United States Supreme Court, however, has recently
decided to take this land away from the free in a daft decision that gave the government the power to
demolish family homes in the name of public use under the Constitution s Fifth Amendment. This
decision should not have been made and has rightfully angered citizens across the country.
The act of eminent domain has traditionally been interpreted as a way to build public roads, schools,
and courthouses. Local governments, however, have been invoking these two words for far less
principled reasons such as building new shopping malls or new more

The leadership styles of General Robert E. Lee and General Grant during the Civil War. Ulysses S.
Grant was not as well known at the start of the Civil War as Robert E. Lee but proved to be just as
valuable during the war. As a soldier, Grant believed, When in doubt, fight. And he did fight. He won
fame for demanding unconditional (complete) surrender from the Southern commanders he was
fighting. In fact, people in the North began saying Grant s initials, U.S., stood for Unconditional
Surrender. In battle, Grant was tough and hard. He was not a retreating man. Soon Grant was made a

As a rule, West Point trained generals held citizen soldiers and officers in low regard. Not Lee; he
understood those whom he led, he appreciated their sacrifices for what they believed in, and adapted
his leadership to suit them. The Army of Northern Virginia was a collection of citizen soldiers from
the various Confederate states, not a professional army of career soldiers. Southerners of the
nineteenth century, and indeed most Americans at the time, held intensely local sympathies; loyalties
to community and state were usually more important than conceptions of American patriotism. Grant
perceived one strategic imperative: A focus on the enemy s armies through maneuver and offensive
action. Lincoln agreed with Grant in this respect, but he also operated under a second strategic
imperative. Faced with this opposition, Grant used dialogue and negotiation to get his essential point
across where his predecessors had failed. Grant did this by employing integrative, or collaborative,
bargaining, an approach that uses shared interests and cooperation to arrive at a satisfactory outcome.
Grant and Lincoln agreed on the end result they desired, and they really did agree on the overall
approach just not on the specific question of a line of operation. Grant was able to convince Lincoln of
the soundness of his overall plan, and as a result, he got much of it implemented. Grant was at his best
as a strategic leader because he

The Poetry Of Christina Keats And Christina Rossetti
The Romantic Period of prose of poetry created a form that promoted the focus on the supernatural,
the natural world, and newfound interest in what was once overlooked. Born in different times and
with distinct circumstances, both John Keats and Christina Rossetti took to poetry to convey their own
ideas, shaped by this revolutionary time. Keats faced the brevity of life much more severely and took
on a more grandiose, dramatic form of romantic poetry when compared to Christina Rossetti.
However, both had a similar tone in observing the natural world and conveying the emotion that
compelled from within. The impact of the Romantic Movement can be felt as one reads through both
John Keats and Christina Rossetti. While differences may exist, and their portrayal is a unique
experience of one s own, elements of the great Romantic time permeates through both of these
marvelous poets.
As seen throughout the Romantic Period, proper description and visualization of setting served as
crucial to the overall feel and overtone for a poem. Keats masterful composition of Bright Star
exemplifies his vivid imagery as a star is described to hang lonely in the night and personified as
forever awake with eternal lids apart . He dreams of lying on his fair love s ripening breast... to hear
her tender taken breath. Keats imagery serves to stir emotion within the reader and relate intangible
concepts to those that can be related. His depictions of severe circumstances are filled with

African American Influence On Cuban Culture
Before the popularization of Son, Cuban music and dance was largely influenced by Europe.
Compositions in the early period closely resemble songs from middle class Europe. These genres
include: the creole, canción and danzón (Moore 17). While these genres were seen as the model of
Cuban expression at the turn of the century, the Afrocuban music known as Son would soon become
(and remain) the paragon of Cuban artistic and cultural expression; the previous genres paled in
comparison in terms of popularity. Fusing African, Indigenous and European elements, Son
exemplified the transculturation that so many of the elites in Cuba were promoting as Cuba s identity;
however, the most prominent elements in Son music originated from Africa, which did ... Show more

There are two main reasons for this persistence: the brutish and inhumane practices from Spanish and
Portuguese slave traders, and the spiritual concept of ori practiced by the Yoruba. Before the abolition
of slavery in 1886, the Spanish and Portuguese s philosophy was to work their slaves to death for four
to five years, before bringing in a new hoard of bodies. Unlike the United States, there was little effort
to integrate slaves into the culture. Because no assimilation took place, African culture was never
replaced or lost in Cuba. Beyond this, the Yoruba people from Africa carried with them the tradition of
Ori. This concept referred one s culture residing in the head or consciousness, and therefore unable to
be taken away. This persistence of African elements led to the spread of Son throughout Cuban

High Life Narrative
The year of the bland and the boring, the self conscious and the self righteous battle. The year that was
loser like and lame. During my intermediate school period, I didn t succeed of much. To this day I don
t remember much from these years, that s how unimportant they were. I had my first crush on this man
of a boy that I never had a chance with, and still never will. He was the school sweetheart and almost
everyone had a crush on him. With long brown swoopy hair, blue eyes and crazily tall, how could any
fifth grader not fall for him. I never even spoke to him and got jittery any time I made eye contact
passing in the hall. I had a kiddy diary where I wrote about how I was going to invite him to my
birthday party, and he would suddenly fall in love. This is the only thing that kept me busy during my
low life/ no life during fifth and sixth grade. During this time is most likely when my family and I

Analysis Of Troilus And Cressida Essay
In the essay, I am attempting to reveal the true character of Cressida as opposed to the reputation she
obtains in the play. This is accomplished through the conversations Cressida has with Pandarus and
Troilus, where the two men obtain early encounters with Cressida as this noble nature is revealed. In
the Shakespearean play, Troilus and Cressida , Cressida is a woman who seems to be easily
manipulated by the male characters. Despite being taken advantage of often, she finds herself making
light of each terrible situation. Although the men who take advantage only see her as a promiscuous
woman, her true nature reveals a completely different Cressida. She is witty, coy, and apparently say,
which helps her to adapt to her changing circumstances, none of which are under her control. She is
resistant of Troilus at first and then after she falls for him, seems to think somewhat more of him than
he deserves, as her dialogue switches from double talk to inflated rhetoric. Shakespeare s Cressida has
often been dismissed as a shallow, cold, calculating prostitute; however, some recent evaluations
challenge this perception of her character. Where the main concern is of her being faithful to the man
who did not save her from being taken by the Greeks, she now depends on wit which has single
handedly saved her in past situations. Rather than being calculating or deceptive, Cressida is driven by
her own vanity, addicted to romantic displays of affection where her worth as a noble

The Consequences Of The Falling Of A Parachute
The falling of a parachute represents something much deeper then the written text. The pulling and
slacking of the parachutes strings shows how basic responsibilities may take priority over original
thought and pull actions in different directions. The idea of being an adult comes with many
challenges and commitments that need to be regulated. This includes balancing work, play, and a
family. Being stranded, these young boys do not have the norms of society, changing and molding
them to be adults. This lack of responsibility and actual leadership gives them a false sense of
adulthood, and what they perceive to be the freedom of age. Having responsibilities can give a
perception that adulthood is near because most children are taught that having

Gods And Goddesses In Ancient Greece
Mythology was created by transmission of oral form into written forms. Poets such as Hesiod, Homer,

Greece used storytelling to explain the world around them, because these stories included Gods and
Goddesses. Each of these Gods and Goddesses had an unique effect on the world around them. The
people of ancient Greece used sculptures, books, paintings to express how the Gods and Goddesses

The Missing Element Of Self Discipline
PHIL 0012 Tuesday 6 PM Fuwen Tu One Reason to Question Justice: the Missing Element of Self
discipline Whether justice is a good part of living a happy life or not is an important issue to address
in Philosophy. According to Glaucon, there are three kinds of good. The first kind of good is that the
thing is welcomed for its own sake (Lee, 41). This kind of good is good in itself such as pleasure. The
second kind of good is something people desire; it is good in both itself and its consequences . The
third kind of good is that the thing is only good for its consequences but not in itself, such as exercise
and medical treatment. Different from people, who argue that justice may only good in its
consequence or even bad since it compromises personal interests, Socrates argues that justice is good
in its nature just like health (Lee, 153 154). Since justice cannot be seen directly in an individual,
Socrates discusses justice from a large scale the justice in community before goes into individuals.
Socrates argues that the justice in the community is analogous to the justice in an individual. In a
community/state, there are 4 cardinal virtues wisdom, courage, self discipline, and justice. Wisdom is
defined as the people who rule the city the rulers have the knowledge of truth. In other words, the state
has wisdom if the rulers are wise. Courage is defined as the people who keep the city safe the
guardians are able to judge what is worthy of fearing. So the state is

The Biblical Worldview Of A Worldview
A worldview is a compilation of one s belief that will help determine how one will react and
communicate based on new ideas, issues, disagreements, and in general, life s challenges; it is what
one relies on in order to answer those tough questions in relation to today s issues. A worldview will
determine how you look at any situation, from abortion, religion, gay marriage or to more mundane
issues, it is that innate belief that you have formulated in your life that will determine those outcomes
and how others will possibly perceive you to be. Word Count: 93 words Part II The biblical worldview
of our Origin started with God; He created our world, and all that exists within it, everything within
six days (Gen.1.1). God created man in His own likeness on the fifth day, out of dust, Adam was
made; Out of Adam s rib, woman was created (Gen.1.27, Gen.2.7). God is the great creator, He has
always been and always will be. Unlike theories that try to explain creation in just being a whimsical
roll of the dice, that somehow from a Big Bang explosion, life simply emerging cannot be; the
complexity of all of creation could not be something that just happened by luck. A master designer can
be the only explanation to explain how this beautiful, complex world came to be in all of its glory and
richness, down to the most specific detail, as well as how man was created from nothing. Man, unlike
all other animals, was the only one created in God s image. He gave man authority over all

Torres Strait Islanders Stereotypes

are taught on what their parents tell them. Then slowly it starts growing into our cultural identity over
the multiple generations. As you probably know, there is a big age gap between your parents and your
self. In the nowadays generation, the way we talk is considered to be rude to someone that is a lot
older like In there 60 70. People from the older generation had specific ways a sentence was said.

Equity of Trade Versus Free Trade Essay
Equity of Trade Versus Free Trade
The U.S. has a huge trade imbalance with most trading nations. The imbalance is not in agriculture,
although many food products both raw and processed enter the U.S. at prices below those for
comparable U.S. grown foodstuffs. To a large degree the imbalance is in manufactured goods. One
reason is that many nations have lower costs of production based upon a lower standard of living,
cheap labor, inexpensive raw materials, protective government policy, etc. Multinationals who have
moved their plants to foreign locations enjoy the best of both worlds inexpensive manufacturing costs
and unlimited access to the world s biggest consumer market, the USA. Our laissez faire trade stance,

Analyze what happened: No one got taken advantage of. America got the imported goods. The foreign
entity received a like amount of American goods or services. The trade books are balanced. All monies
earned interest every step of the way.
The U.S. didn t allow inexpensive foreign goods to displace American goods on price alone. It made
the foreign goods compete on a quality basis with American goods. American consumers will make
the choice of which is better at a comparable price. If the foreign goods are really superior to the
American goods, then the foreign manufacturer will have earned an increased share of the world
market and the U.S. manufacturer or ag producer will have to get more competitive or go out of
business. The reverse is also true so the free market and the law of supply and demand still gets a
chance to work, but it works on the basis of quality and value, not upon inherent differences in world
standards of living.

Abolishing Slavery
Jimmy Watson History May 13, 2009 Abolishing Slavery The American civil war had a profound
effect on the lives of slaves. It ultimately resulted in the abolition of slavery. Slaves first arrived in
America in Virginia in 1619. The Underground Railway was a way by which slaves could find
freedom. This was a method for northerners to help escaped slaves to find a place to live in free states
or Canada. Free black Americans were usually the ones to plan and helped with the Underground
Railroad. It is believed about 50,000 to 100,000 people used the Underground Railroad to escape to
their freedom. The Civil War was fought partly over the issue of slavery. The people that lived in the

In the final days of the war, the Confederacy even considered using blacks as soldiers, offering
freedom as a reward. When given the choice, slaves made it very clear that they wanted emancipation.
The overwhelming majority of slaves, however, remained on their plantations in the countryside. Even
then these slaves in the Southern interior found ways to demonstrate their desire for freedom. They did
not stop working, but they did considerably less work than they had before the war. Lincoln detested
slavery, but he doubted whether blacks and whites could ever live in America in a condition of
equality. The slaves ran away in massive numbers during the spring and summer of 1862, freeing
themselves. Abolitionists who insisted that the war should be one for the freedom of the slaves
confronted Lincoln at home. The Emancipation proclamation in January 1863 did not legally free a
single slave. Through the proclamation Lincoln silenced his abolitionist critics in the North, defused
interventionist sentiment abroad, and invigorated black slave resisters to continue their efforts in the
South. Near the end of the war, abolitionists were concerned that the Emancipation Proclamation
would be construed solely as a war act and no longer apply once fighting ended. They were also
increasingly anxious to secure the freedom of all slaves, not just those freed by the Emancipation
Proclamation. Thus pressed, Lincoln staked a

Examples Of Archetypal Criticism
CHAPTER II Archetypal criticism
The roots of archetypal criticism
Archetypal criticism is a type of literary criticism that focuses on particular narrative patterns,
archetypes, motifs, themes or characters that recur in a particular literary work or in literature in
general.
Archetypal criticism has its basis in the application of concepts developed in psychoanalysis and in
mythology to the study of literature. The main tendency of this approach to criticism resembles to the
early conception of form in Western thought.
Collective unconscious lays beneath the personal conscious and personal unconscious. As Jung said,
the collective unconscious is a storehouse of knowledge, experiences, and images of the human race.

As Joseph Campbell says in his popular book The Power of Myth: Myths deal with great human
problems. I know what to do when I come to a threshold in my life now. A myth can tell me about it,
how to respond to certain crises of disappointment or delight or failure or success. Myths tell me
where I am. (1988, 15) An archetype can be defined as an original type or model after which similar
things are patterned, a prototype, an ideal example. An archetype, as used in literature, is a recurrent,
universal pattern that evokes a deep, emotional response invirtually all readers as it strikes a chord in
their unconscious memory. The archetype has no form of its own, but it acts as an organizing principle
on the things we see or do. It works the way that instincts work in Freud s theory.
For Jung the archetypes taken as a whole represent the sum of the latent potentialities of the human

The Three Important Aspects Of Elite Decision-Making
There are many different aspects of elite decisions that need to be considered by actors. When looking
at how elites make decisions, there is one theory that uses three important aspects of the decision
making process. Prospect theory looks at the domain that the actor is in during the decision making
process and that can determine whether or not they are likely to make risky conclusions along with
comparing utility and risk propensity to make informed resolutions. Prospect theory best explains elite
decision making and can be explained using Truman s choice to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
The combination of utility maximization, framing and risk propensity creates a parsimonious theory
that covers all major aspects of elite decision making. History of the Bomb The Manhattan Project
began in 1941 when President Franklin Roosevelt was convinced by Albert Einstein to start the
project. When Roosevelt died on April 12th, the bomb had not been tested and effects of the bomb
were widely contested between scientists. Harry Truman, who was known for his common sense

The framing effect is observed when the description of options in terms of gains (positive frame)
rather than losses (negative frame) elicits systematically different choices. (Gonzalez 2005) The
classic example of this is what chances do you take in the event of a deadly outbreak. Imagine that the
United States is preparing for an outbreak of an unusual disease that is expected to kill 600 people.
Two alternative programs to combat the disease have been proposed. Scientific estimates of the

Essay on Annotated Bibliographies; Henri Fayol s Work...
Rodrigues, CA, 2001, Fayol s 14 principles of management then and now: a framework for managing
today s organizations effectively , Management Decision, vol. 31, no. 10, pp. 880 889.
Rodrigues discusses in some detail how Fayol s principles of management individually are/are not
used in modern management. He doesn t necessarily hold a contention or argument as he is ultimately
comparing and contrasting the world of management in US organisations from early 1900 s to now.
However the result of each of his discussions fall in the same favour each time, which may potentially
be viewed as a bias and further as a limitation of this journal. A further limitation of this article is that
it blurs the line between positive and normative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pryor, MS amp; Taneja, S 2010, Henry Fayol, practitioner and theoretician revered and reviled ,
Journal of Management History, vol. 16, no. 4, pp. 489 503.
The purpose of this paper by Pryor amp; Taneja (2010) is to illustrate through examining
contemporary management and management theories how Fayol s contribution of his principles and
model theory is relevant in management today.
This is done by a process of researching and examining the work of major academics (e.g. Mintzberg
(1989), Porter (1985), Taylor (1947), Kotter (1982), amp; Berdaves (2002)) Pryor and Taneja (2010)
compare the works and ideas of both Fayol and these authors to find the similarities and differences
between their theories.
A limitation of this article may be the large focus of similarities between studies, paying rare attention
to the differences between Fayol and the given management theorist. Future studies on this issue
should be undertaken in an argumentative manner, given equivalent attention to both aspects of the
argument. Indeed; this article supports the conclusions of similar studies (e.g. Rodrigues, 2001.
Archer, 1990. Fells, 2000) that Fayol s theory is relevant today, and that his 5 management functions
are evident in all organisations (Hales 1986). Another shared conclusion between journals is that Fayol
s work sets the foundations of management practise and theory today. Even though Mintzberg (1973)
argues differently, his theory tends to

Santa Is Real Essay
Is Santa real? This is the one question that everyone asks at some point in their life. I have been asking
this for a long time. But I kept telling myself that he was real because I wanted him to be real. The
magical tale of Santa going to every house in one night and leaving you presents was one of the most
magical things and to know that was real was something magical.
But secretly, I had a small feeling that Santa was not real. Every year I would see more kids stop
believing in Santa and I felt like I was standing in a world of darkness which kept on getting darker
and darker each year. But I still was not ready to say that Santa was not real. I still wanted that little bit
of magic in my life during the last month of the year where all of my worries would disappear for a
minute and all I could see was Santa getting ready for Christmas up at the North Pole.
But I knew one day the day would come where I would be told that Santa wasn t real and I would join
everyone in the world of darkness where I could not hop into Santa s magical world and be swept
away in his sled around the world.
This day came one rainy November day when I was in 9th grade. I was in high school. My world had
turned upside down by change and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But not like we thought. Santa is not one person who has a sled and give presents to everyone in one
night. Santa is a flower that grows in everyone that gets a little bigger each year. This flower gives you
the power to give to others, to spread joy, and do everything that Santa can do during the holiday
season. So yes Santa is real because you are Santa, everyone is Santa. Everyone had a flower in them
that will blossom in their mind garden that gives you the powers you always wanted at Christmas
time. It is the one flower in your garden that stands out in your garden and seems to get a little bigger
each year. That is the Christmas Flower and this flower makes that dark world colorful and

Eulogy Essay About Thankful
Cindy, we are so thankful for your testimony, love, and faithfulness. You have lived a beautiful life
reflecting Christ s love. You are kind and caring. Our savior s presence is evident in your life. I didn t
get the chance to know you as well as I would have liked to. But we do have something in common
and in that way I know you. I know you are beautiful in the sight of the Lord, and beautify this world
simply with your presence.
I know you are forgiven, I know your life is an outpouring of thankfulness, I know you are a loyal
wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend. I have seen joy in your eyes and in your life. Joy throughout
suffering. Cindy I am so thankful for you, I mourn for the loss your life will have for those closest to

Is it?...is it? I whispered to my guide.
Not at all, said he. It s someone ye ll never have heard of. Her name on earth was Sarah Smith and she
lived at Golders Green.
She seems to be...well, a person of particular importance?
Aye. She is one of the great ones. Ye have heard that fame in this country and fame on Earth are two
quite different things.
And who are these gigantic people...look! They re like emeralds...who are dancing and throwing
flowers before here?
Haven t ye read your Milton? A thousand liveried angels lackey her.
And who are all these young men and women on each side?
They are her sons and daughters.
She must have had a very large family, Sir.
Every young man or boy that met her became her son even if it was only the boy that brought the meat
to her back door. Every girl that met her was her daughter.
Isn t that a bit hard on their own parents?
No. There are those that steal other people s children. But her motherhood was of a different kind.
Those on whom it fell went back to their natural parents loving them more. Few men looked on her
without becoming, in a certain fashion, her lovers. But it was the kind of love that made them not less
true, but truer, to their own wives.
And how...but hullo! What are all these animals? A cat two cats dozens of cats. And all those
dogs...why, I can t count them. And the birds. And the horses.
They are her beasts.

Bill Of Rights Created
Have you ever wondered what the bill of rights is or who created it? The bill of rights consists of the
10 first amendments of the USA constitution, which was written by James Madison. It was created by
the Anti Federalist who didn t want the government to have too much power in their hands. The reason
why the bill of rights was created was because the Anti Federalist didn t want the government to go
over their rights. They responded that it was needed to have a bill Or list of rights because it was
needed to protect such basic liberties as freedom of speech and religion. The reason why they wanted
them to be written down on a legal document was because they knew that the government would

With the investigation hat on, the texted revealed who was talking (LORD) and whom the listener was
(Joshua). The main point of the text was three fold; one was to acknowledge that the previous leader
Moses was dead and new leadership had to take his place. Next was the assurance of the previous
promises that were made would indeed be kept and fulfilled as long at his directives and mandates
were followed as laid out. Finally, the much needed encouragement to the newly appointed leader, to
take his rightful place knowing that he was chosen and will be victorious in all that he does as long as
he continued in the commandments of the LORD. The meaning of the text was laid out in the story
format so that the reader knew for the beginning that this was a conversation between the LORD and
Joshua, the conversation consisted of the specific details of what was to be done, how it was to be
done and who was going to do it. The reader can take this story and literal and true because in the end,
the promises in Chapter one was fulfilled by the end of Chapter

The Problem of Badger Control in Great Britain Essay
Introduction
Since 1973, controlling badgers in Great Britain has been a political problem. Badgers are one of the
most well known animals in Britain; hence the Protection of Badgers Act 1992 was designed to
protect them (Natural England). However, tuberculosis was discovered in badgers as a result of
Mycobacterium bovis (Muirhead et al., 1974). Till this day, some argue that badgers are a significant
source of infection for cattle, which raises a concern for the society (Krebs, 1997). Therefore, it raises
the issue of whether trials to test the efficacy of badger culling in control of bovine tuberculosis should
be permitted.
Review
Mycobacterium bovis not only causes bovine tuberculosis in badgers but also infects cattle and deer.

The culling of badgers disrupts the structure of their social group, which leads to a widespread of
tuberculosis as they move further away to establish new groups (Briggs, 2012). As a result, there is an
increase in incidence outside areas where badgers were not culled. Consequently, people are relying
on vaccinations and even the government in Devon is providing funds to farmers who are in areas of
high risk (Jones, 2013). The vaccination project in Gloucestershire has been very successful and in
one year it has already immunised 998 badgers. Additionally, improving biosecurity could decrease
transmission by preventing badgers from entering farms and coming into contact with cattle (Briggs,
2012).
Discussion
Even though vaccinations are expensive and require a lot of effort, rather than immunising badgers,
cattle would relatively cost less and still be successful in controlling bovine tuberculosis (Jones,
2013). However, at the moment the legislation of the European Union bans the vaccination of cattle
because checking for infection in the animals would become challenging (Department for
Environment Food and Rural Affairs). Farmers need a solution to the problem immediately and they
cannot wait for ten years to abolish the ban as incidents in cattle herds are rising increasingly over the
past few years (Briggs, 2012). Thus, culling badgers is the most effective method at present when
considering

  • 2. Problems Associated With Pipe Breaks The problems associated with pipe breaks are economic, reduce reliability and reduce water quality. The cost of replacing or repairing a pipe can be split into capital costs (supplying and laying the new pipe), maintenance costs (repairing and preventing failure in the system), operating costs (electricity and filtering costs) and damage costs (property damage, inconvenience, loss of amenity, health risks and environmental costs). (Dandy Engelhardt, 2001) All of these costs can be difficult to accurately predict, which may be necessary when consulting with management about whether or not to replace a pipe. Pipe bursts in commercial areas and along main roads also have higher failure costs as the interruption the failure will have on the traffic and potential 3rd party damage will be greater. A rational decision needs to be made into at what point it is more cost effective to replace the pipe than letting water run out of the cracks. The cost of a repair = crew+ equipment+ sleeve + repaving + overhead costs. Figure 2 Cost breakdown of repairing pipes (in US dollars) While the above figure gives a rough estimate of what each portion of the repair will cost, the variables were calculated in 1982 in America, and protocols may have changed since then, or be different in New Zealand than it was in America at the time of the study. However, this was the only literature available that considered breaking down the cost of repair. Figure 3 Repair and Replacement Costs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. The Main Collective Theory Of Functionalist Theories Essay The main collective theme in functionalist theories is the ability to look at society as a whole, rather than making judgements on purely an individual s actions and the motives behind them. In continuation, firm believers of the ideology that everything in society has a purpose and a designated role in order for the collective society, to work cohesively and function. The explanation for this comes from Durkheim, a sociologist who placed importance in consensus to achieve the need for social order. These concepts can be defined as people within a society, who have a tendency to be selfish, but by having various institutions within society, they are able to obtain social order pass on norms, values and morals. Crime can be functional when the rates are low, but dysfunctional to society when the rates are too high. Furthermore he believed that crime was inevitable in society, because crime and deviance is the product of a lack of attachment to the prevailing values that were shared among a collective society. Durkheim widely argued that people were all individuals with different experiences, so consequently not everyone will inevitably share the same values. Without these shared norms and values being passed on the prospect of social order cannot be obtained as there will not be a collective conformity towards them and which is therefore enforced by various institutions and structures. For example, if a child comes from a working class family or one which does not follow the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Faerie Queene Essay The poem, The Faerie Queene , is a story about a courageous knight who goes through great trials and fights monsters. This in itself is entertaining but, it also has many allegorical references to Christianity. Many times Spenser talks about things when in reality he s really talking something closer to home. For instance, this faerie land he talks about sounds like he is referring to England, the country where he s from. Also, the title Faerie Queene itself is seems to represent Queen Elizabeth, the Queen of England. Redcrosse, the hero of the poem, is a major part of this allegory. He is called the Knight of Holinesse which is a reference to being holy and worshiping God. He represents the lonely Christian on a journey to put ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Redcrosse and Una travel on their way, things are fine and both are kept in tact. Redcrosse is first introduced to evil when fighting the dragon, Error. When fighting the dragon, Spenser writes, Her vomit full of bookes and papers was (177). These papers represent Roman Catholic propaganda that was put out in Spenser s time, against Queen Elizabeth. This shows the allegory Spencer was trying to put forth in writing this poem. After defeating the dragon, Redcrosse and Una travel looking for the right path, when it starts to get dark and they find a place to stay, with a hermit in his inn. When they fall asleep, we find out who this hermit is, Archimago, an evil sorcerer. He conjures up two spirits to trouble Redcrosse. One of the spirits goes into his dreams and makes him dream of love and lust, when he awakes; he is lying next to the other spirit who is disguised as Una, who asks for a kiss from him. He turns it down, and falls back asleep. Then Archimago takes the spirit disguised as Una and lays it in a bed, and takes the other spirit and disguises it as a young man. Redcrosse awakes and sees this and is furious and decides to leave without her. The mission Archimago was out to accomplish had worked and he had separated holiness and faith. It is my belief that exploration of traditional belief systems and ritualistic practices will lead to a greater understanding of the Maori culture in present day New Zealand. Brief Maori History The Maori, Children of Heaven , are the indigenous people of New Zealand. The traditional legend begins with Rangi (the sky father) and Papa (the earth mother) uniting to give birth to numerous offspring: gods of the sea, forest, wind, wild food, planted food, and mankind.5 Once born, the children constantly quarreled with one another in the darkness and finally decided to separate their parents to create light. The god of the wind, opposed to the idea, fled to the sky where his anger manifested into thunder and lightening. Disregarding his brother s opinion, the god of the forest successfully separated his parents loving embrace. The disconnection enabled life to flourish and thrive throughout the land. Unfortunately, Rangi and Papa were forever separated. Rangi s constant flow of tears filled the oceans and lakes. To this day, many Maori believe that Rangi and Papa s infinite sorrow is responsible for the dew, mist and rain.5 Maori religion is largely based on the ancient legend of Rangi and Papa. The religion promotes a deep connection and respect for nature. I shut down and sat in that too clean smelling hospital room, little by little people began to say their good byes to each other and leave, while I just sat. My grandpa walked in and I looked up at the red neon clock on the wall to see that a hour had passed. • 8. Use Of Writing Used By The Missionaries Of Josiah Venture and observed the larger purpose they all serve as a whole. I gathered many primary sources that were written in different points of time. I was able to make sense of much of the data from my past experience with support raising. I have spent several summers in the states with my parents as they use these methods of support raising so I myself am also very familiar with many of Josiah Venture s methods. Results The results of this study show the importance of all of these forms of writing used by the missionaries of Josiah Venture. It is important to realize that the supporters of all of these missionaries are mainly residence of the United States and other European countries. The strategies and roles of these writing types may not apply to every culture a certain missionary communicates with. However, I the values and meaning behind these methods likely apply to all cultures. Support Letters I ll start with the very first technological writing method for support raising. Support letters. Like I said earlier in my paper, I interviewed my grandfather Richard Patty who served in the Philippines for several years. Sex was created by God and meant for marriage. Therefore, woman valued their chastity and would not do a disservice to their bodies. Premarital sex should not be practice because it leads to unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and loss of innocence. In 1275, England established the age of consent to be 12 to prevent older men from ravishing the young maidens to ensure their chastity remained undamaged until marriage ( Age of Consent ). Northern Abolitionist Movement Dbq Essay Moshe Fogelman DBQ 2 C Starting with the Atlantic slave trade in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, in which slaves were brutally transported in the middle passage from Africa to America, slavery had an important role in the American economy, but differed in volume by region. However, as the colonies declared their independence in 1776, a gradual anti slavery movement began in the North as many formed negative opinions about the Southern Peculiar Institution of a slavery based economy. Various issues and ideas from 1776 to 1852 caused this gradual Northern abolitionist movement: political intervention, economic inabilities and threats, social anxieties and intervention, and fundamental moral ideas respectively reflect the thesis. • 11. The Physics of Bridges Essay Physics of Bridges The physics behind bridges is more complex than first meets the eye. To assure that a bridge is well supported many concepts must be understood and used in the correct manner. What is a bridge? A bridge is a complex structure allowing passage across an obstacle: a structure that is built above and across a river, road, or other obstacle to allow people or vehicles to cross it. Bridge forms There are four major forms of bridges: beam, truss, arch, and suspension. A beam bridge, also known as a girder bridge, contains a horizontal beam supported by 2 piers at each end. The beam pushes down on the piers, which weakens the overall bridge. These simplistic bridges are the shortest of all types due to the lack of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Above the bridge, a structure of the same pattern is placed to support the bridge from above. At the ends of each bridge, there are two similar trusses. This ensures that the bridge stays together, even when large amounts of weights cross it. By allowing more weight to cross, these bridges can be longer than beam bridges (they can be up to 500 meters). Forces are the focus of these bridges; each bar exerts a pushing or pulling force without bending. These forces allows the lightweight bridge to stay sturdy without collapsing as each steel bar pushes or pulls in the correct direction. Due to this stability, these bridges are often found over places with unstable ground. Anything from cars to trains are able to cross over these types of bridges without issues. There are 4 major concepts in building a bridge that builders must pay attention to; span type, material of the bridge, the placement of the travel surface in relation to the structure, and the form of the bridge. When considering all of these concepts, builders can effectively construct a safe and sturdy bridge. Newton s 3rd Law One of the most vital concepts in bridge construction is Newton s 3rd Law. This law states: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/bridge/basics.html#beam http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/lostempires/china/meetbeam.html ... • 13. Beethoven Piano Sonata Analysis Beethoven was one of the most influential composers of the late classical era. Of all the forms of music he composed one constant during Beethoven s career were his piano sonatas, which were composed during his early, middle, and late periods. These sonatas far exceeded those created by composers before and are considered to be the bridge between salon music and the concert hall for solo piano repertoire. The early sonatas follow the same traditions established by Mozart and Haydn and by the end of the late period are radically different from conventional form. The late sonatas, Op. 101, 106, 109, 110, and 111, are distinctly different from the other sonatas that came before in their style, forms, and composition. The pieces that I have chosen are the last five piano sonatas from Beethoven s late period. These pieces are reflective of the changes of Beethoven s compositional style as in his older age he began to stretch the limits of the classical style. The piano sonatas are reflective of what he was doing in all of his later works and are sort of condensed versions that still show the same ideas. Because piano sonatas were composed throughout his lifetime, they can be interpreted as a timeline of the changes in Beethoven s style of composing, particularly in the late sonatas. Beethoven had never been a very rapid composer and these five sonatas were the chief output of six years of work in the second to last decade of his life. He does an excellent job of transporting the reader from the black and white pages of a book, to a world where every detail is pointed out and every emotion felt when reading one of Momaday s books or other writings. This style of writing that Momaday uses is very evident in his work The Way to Rainy Mountain, and made even more apparent by reading a review of the book House Made of Dawn found on a web site run by HarperCollins Publishers. One aspect of the essay The Way to Rainy Mountain that I found somewhat distracting was when Momaday would move off of the obvious aspect of his journey home. Even though I very much enjoyed the amazing descriptions that he used in telling of the lands from where his people came, I found it hard to grasp the purpose behind the side stories that were being told. I had latched onto the story of him returning home to his grandmother s grave since that was the first aspect presented to me as the reader. Once I had read the text over and studied it a little more deeply, I realized that the purpose of the story was not to tell of Momaday s journey back to rainy mountain, but to tell the story of the Kiowa s journey to Rainy Mountain. I thought it was a little distracting the first time I read because I was distracted by all of the information that Momaday was telling about the Kiowa people and their history. I kept expecting to hear of his trip back to Rainy Mountain and what he was experiencing during this time. As I said before, it was not until I went back and reread the essay did I catch on about the true point to the story. The United States Supreme Court, however, has recently decided to take this land away from the free in a daft decision that gave the government the power to demolish family homes in the name of public use under the Constitution s Fifth Amendment. This decision should not have been made and has rightfully angered citizens across the country. The act of eminent domain has traditionally been interpreted as a way to build public roads, schools, and courthouses. Grant was not as well known at the start of the Civil War as Robert E. Lee but proved to be just as valuable during the war. As a soldier, Grant believed, When in doubt, fight. And he did fight. He won fame for demanding unconditional (complete) surrender from the Southern commanders he was fighting. In fact, people in the North began saying Grant s initials, U.S., stood for Unconditional Surrender. In battle, Grant was tough and hard. He was not a retreating man. Soon Grant was made a general. He became a leading figure of the war in the West. In 1863 he captured the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi. He starved the city into surrender. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a rule, West Point trained generals held citizen soldiers and officers in low regard. Not Lee; he understood those whom he led, he appreciated their sacrifices for what they believed in, and adapted his leadership to suit them. The Army of Northern Virginia was a collection of citizen soldiers from the various Confederate states, not a professional army of career soldiers. Southerners of the nineteenth century, and indeed most Americans at the time, held intensely local sympathies; loyalties to community and state were usually more important than conceptions of American patriotism. Grant perceived one strategic imperative: A focus on the enemy s armies through maneuver and offensive action. Lincoln agreed with Grant in this respect, but he also operated under a second strategic imperative. Faced with this opposition, Grant used dialogue and negotiation to get his essential point across where his predecessors had failed. Grant did this by employing integrative, or collaborative, bargaining, an approach that uses shared interests and cooperation to arrive at a satisfactory outcome. Grant and Lincoln agreed on the end result they desired, and they really did agree on the overall approach just not on the specific question of a line of operation. Grant was able to convince Lincoln of the soundness of his overall plan, and as a result, he got much of it implemented. Grant was at his best as a strategic leader because he ... • 20. The Poetry Of Christina Keats And Christina Rossetti The Romantic Period of prose of poetry created a form that promoted the focus on the supernatural, the natural world, and newfound interest in what was once overlooked. Born in different times and with distinct circumstances, both John Keats and Christina Rossetti took to poetry to convey their own ideas, shaped by this revolutionary time. Keats faced the brevity of life much more severely and took on a more grandiose, dramatic form of romantic poetry when compared to Christina Rossetti. However, both had a similar tone in observing the natural world and conveying the emotion that compelled from within. The impact of the Romantic Movement can be felt as one reads through both John Keats and Christina Rossetti. While differences may exist, and their portrayal is a unique experience of one s own, elements of the great Romantic time permeates through both of these marvelous poets. As seen throughout the Romantic Period, proper description and visualization of setting served as crucial to the overall feel and overtone for a poem. Keats masterful composition of Bright Star exemplifies his vivid imagery as a star is described to hang lonely in the night and personified as forever awake with eternal lids apart . He dreams of lying on his fair love s ripening breast... to hear her tender taken breath. Keats imagery serves to stir emotion within the reader and relate intangible concepts to those that can be related. His depictions of severe circumstances are filled with ... This is accomplished through the conversations Cressida has with Pandarus and Troilus, where the two men obtain early encounters with Cressida as this noble nature is revealed. In the Shakespearean play, Troilus and Cressida , Cressida is a woman who seems to be easily manipulated by the male characters. Despite being taken advantage of often, she finds herself making light of each terrible situation. Although the men who take advantage only see her as a promiscuous woman, her true nature reveals a completely different Cressida. She is witty, coy, and apparently say, which helps her to adapt to her changing circumstances, none of which are under her control. She is resistant of Troilus at first and then after she falls for him, seems to think somewhat more of him than he deserves, as her dialogue switches from double talk to inflated rhetoric. Shakespeare s Cressida has often been dismissed as a shallow, cold, calculating prostitute; however, some recent evaluations challenge this perception of her character. Where the main concern is of her being faithful to the man who did not save her from being taken by the Greeks, she now depends on wit which has single handedly saved her in past situations. Rather than being calculating or deceptive, Cressida is driven by her own vanity, addicted to romantic displays of affection where her worth as a noble ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 28. The Missing Element Of Self Discipline PHIL 0012 Tuesday 6 PM Fuwen Tu One Reason to Question Justice: the Missing Element of Self discipline Whether justice is a good part of living a happy life or not is an important issue to address in Philosophy. According to Glaucon, there are three kinds of good. The first kind of good is that the thing is welcomed for its own sake (Lee, 41). This kind of good is good in itself such as pleasure. The second kind of good is something people desire; it is good in both itself and its consequences . The third kind of good is that the thing is only good for its consequences but not in itself, such as exercise and medical treatment. Different from people, who argue that justice may only good in its consequence or even bad since it compromises personal interests, Socrates argues that justice is good in its nature just like health (Lee, 153 154). Since justice cannot be seen directly in an individual, Socrates discusses justice from a large scale the justice in community before goes into individuals. Socrates argues that the justice in the community is analogous to the justice in an individual. In a community/state, there are 4 cardinal virtues wisdom, courage, self discipline, and justice. Wisdom is defined as the people who rule the city the rulers have the knowledge of truth. In other words, the state has wisdom if the rulers are wise. Courage is defined as the people who keep the city safe the guardians are able to judge what is worthy of fearing. So the state is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A worldview will determine how you look at any situation, from abortion, religion, gay marriage or to more mundane issues, it is that innate belief that you have formulated in your life that will determine those outcomes and how others will possibly perceive you to be. Word Count: 93 words Part II The biblical worldview of our Origin started with God; He created our world, and all that exists within it, everything within six days (Gen.1.1). God created man in His own likeness on the fifth day, out of dust, Adam was made; Out of Adam s rib, woman was created (Gen.1.27, Gen.2.7). God is the great creator, He has always been and always will be. Unlike theories that try to explain creation in just being a whimsical roll of the dice, that somehow from a Big Bang explosion, life simply emerging cannot be; the complexity of all of creation could not be something that just happened by luck. To a large degree the imbalance is in manufactured goods. One reason is that many nations have lower costs of production based upon a lower standard of living, cheap labor, inexpensive raw materials, protective government policy, etc. Multinationals who have moved their plants to foreign locations enjoy the best of both worlds inexpensive manufacturing costs and unlimited access to the world s biggest consumer market, the USA. They did not stop working, but they did considerably less work than they had before the war. Lincoln detested slavery, but he doubted whether blacks and whites could ever live in America in a condition of equality. The slaves ran away in massive numbers during the spring and summer of 1862, freeing themselves. Abolitionists who insisted that the war should be one for the freedom of the slaves confronted Lincoln at home. The Emancipation proclamation in January 1863 did not legally free a single slave. Through the proclamation Lincoln silenced his abolitionist critics in the North, defused interventionist sentiment abroad, and invigorated black slave resisters to continue their efforts in the South. Near the end of the war, abolitionists were concerned that the Emancipation Proclamation would be construed solely as a war act and no longer apply once fighting ended. • 42. An Era Of Advancements, 1945-1970 An Era of Advancements Jackie Robinson once said Life is not a spectator sport. . . . If you re going to spend your whole life in the grandstand just watching what goes on, in my opinion you re wasting your life. Robinson was always looking to advance not only in baseball, but in life as well. During the years 1945 1970, Americans experienced prosperity, advancements, and controversy. For example, the assassination of John F. Kennedy caused Americans to question the honesty of the government. In addition, Americans also faced massive Civil Rights movements and anti war protests that divided the country. Project MKUltra started in the 1950 s and lasted around 20 years. The CIA experimented on countless unsuspecting American Citizens that were exposed to drugs, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, abuse and torture. Subjects that were least likely to put up a fight were picked for the operation. Popular places and subjects were nursing homes, prisons, mental hospitals, homeless people, and drug addicts. Over 44 different universities were involved in the operation. Doctor Sidney Gottlieb was chosen to lead the program when it officially began in 1953. The US started mind control experiments, torture, and brainwashing programs after reports that the Chinese and North Koreans were testing techniques on prisoners of war in WWII. • 43. The Three Important Aspects Of Elite Decision-Making There are many different aspects of elite decisions that need to be considered by actors. When looking at how elites make decisions, there is one theory that uses three important aspects of the decision making process. Prospect theory looks at the domain that the actor is in during the decision making process and that can determine whether or not they are likely to make risky conclusions along with comparing utility and risk propensity to make informed resolutions. Prospect theory best explains elite decision making and can be explained using Truman s choice to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The combination of utility maximization, framing and risk propensity creates a parsimonious theory that covers all major aspects of elite decision making. History of the Bomb The Manhattan Project began in 1941 when President Franklin Roosevelt was convinced by Albert Einstein to start the project. When Roosevelt died on April 12th, the bomb had not been tested and effects of the bomb were widely contested between scientists. Harry Truman, who was known for his common sense mentality and quick decision making, became president following Roosevelt s death. On April 24th, Truman was given detailed information about the Manhattan Project, and the atomic bomb. Truman was not sure of its practicality, but with the war raging on, he kept it in the back of his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rodrigues, CA, 2001, Fayol s 14 principles of management then and now: a framework for managing today s organizations effectively , Management Decision, vol. 31, no. 10, pp. 880 889. Rodrigues discusses in some detail how Fayol s principles of management individually are/are not used in modern management. He doesn t necessarily hold a contention or argument as he is ultimately comparing and contrasting the world of management in US organisations from early 1900 s to now. However the result of each of his discussions fall in the same favour each time, which may potentially be viewed as a bias and further as a limitation of this journal. A further limitation of this article is that it blurs the line between positive and normative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pryor, MS amp; Taneja, S 2010, Henry Fayol, practitioner and theoretician revered and reviled , Journal of Management History, vol. 16, no. 4, pp. 489 503. The purpose of this paper by Pryor amp; Taneja (2010) is to illustrate through examining contemporary management and management theories how Fayol s contribution of his principles and model theory is relevant in management today. This is done by a process of researching and examining the work of major academics (e.g. Mintzberg (1989), Porter (1985), Taylor (1947), Kotter (1982), amp; Berdaves (2002)) Pryor and Taneja (2010) compare the works and ideas of both Fayol and these authors to find the similarities and differences between their theories. A limitation of this article may be the large focus of similarities between studies, paying rare attention to the differences between Fayol and the given management theorist. Future studies on this issue should be undertaken in an argumentative manner, given equivalent attention to both aspects of the argument. Indeed; this article supports the conclusions of similar studies (e.g. Rodrigues, 2001. Archer, 1990. Fells, 2000) that Fayol s theory is relevant today, and that his 5 management functions are evident in all organisations (Hales 1986). Another shared conclusion between journals is that Fayol s work sets the foundations of management practise and theory today. Even though Mintzberg (1973) argues differently, his theory tends to ... Next was the assurance of the previous promises that were made would indeed be kept and fulfilled as long at his directives and mandates were followed as laid out. Finally, the much needed encouragement to the newly appointed leader, to take his rightful place knowing that he was chosen and will be victorious in all that he does as long as he continued in the commandments of the LORD. • 51. The Problem of Badger Control in Great Britain Essay Introduction Since 1973, controlling badgers in Great Britain has been a political problem. Badgers are one of the most well known animals in Britain; hence the Protection of Badgers Act 1992 was designed to protect them (Natural England). However, tuberculosis was discovered in badgers as a result of Mycobacterium bovis (Muirhead et al., 1974). Till this day, some argue that badgers are a significant source of infection for cattle, which raises a concern for the society (Krebs, 1997). Therefore, it raises the issue of whether trials to test the efficacy of badger culling in control of bovine tuberculosis should be permitted. Review Mycobacterium bovis not only causes bovine tuberculosis in badgers but also infects cattle and deer. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The culling of badgers disrupts the structure of their social group, which leads to a widespread of tuberculosis as they move further away to establish new groups (Briggs, 2012). As a result, there is an increase in incidence outside areas where badgers were not culled. Consequently, people are relying on vaccinations and even the government in Devon is providing funds to farmers who are in areas of high risk (Jones, 2013). The vaccination project in Gloucestershire has been very successful and in one year it has already immunised 998 badgers. Additionally, improving biosecurity could decrease transmission by preventing badgers from entering farms and coming into contact with cattle (Briggs, 2012). Discussion Even though vaccinations are expensive and require a lot of effort, rather than immunising badgers, cattle would relatively cost less and still be successful in controlling bovine tuberculosis (Jones, 2013). However, at the moment the legislation of the European Union bans the vaccination of cattle because checking for infection in the animals would become challenging (Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs). Farmers need a solution to the problem immediately and they cannot wait for ten years to abolish the ban as incidents in cattle herds are rising increasingly over the past few years (Briggs, 2012). Thus, culling badgers is the most effective method at present when considering ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
