in their works. Hawthorne uses the style of Romanticism, which was most prominent during the early

interlaced throughout the short story. Early in the tale, Hawthorne writes, [Giovanni] seated himself
near the window, but within the shadow thrown by the depth of the wall, so that he could look down

Although he commits two crimes (murdering his own father, and marrying his mother), he does not
realize what he has done until after it has happened. He is truly guilty of both of those crimes since he
committed them himself; however, he is also a victim. He didn t know that the person he is married is
his mother; therefore he is only a victim. However, murder is still murder whether it is of his own

The purpose of this quote within the story, is to remind readers of the emotional journey and how war
can affect people, years after it s all over these men won t be thinking of whether their friends died on
