Whale Hunting In Makah Culture
The debate in this article can be really boiled down to people s view of animal rights and cultural
rights (Van Grinkel, 2004). For fifteen hundred years the Makah having been conducting whale hunts
with it being one of the main aspects of their culture. In 1855 a treaty was signed in which they
forfeited thousands of acres of their land to the federal government in exchange for the ability to
continue their whale hunts. However, in the 1920s traditional whale hunting by the Makah stopped for
a variety of reasons. In 1937 grey whaling was official out lawed. Fast forward to 1995 when the
Makah culture wanted to resume the traditional whale hunting. After some intense legal battles with
the government they were allowed too. In 1999 after some extremely fierce protesting they finally
managed to get a whale. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first was a resurgence of the Makah culture. They relearned all the ways their ancestors did this
hunt. This was not just the tools for the hunt but the spiritual aspects such as the releasing of the whale
s soul and the wives symbolically representing the actual whales during the hunts. While the effects
from the whale hunt for the culture were good some negative ones arose from the public. The public
believed that this hunt was immoral and barbaric because they wanted to protect the whale. The hunt
was almost complete based on traditional practices except for a rifle they used to instantly kill the
whale after it has been caught. The protestors were angry about that but they didn t consider how
much more humane it was to kill the whale like that. While orginally it was under guise of protecting
the whales it turned to blatant racism when they called the Makah savages, barbarians, and other

Theme Of Death In Beowulf
Every man must expose himself to the reality that death is unescapable. There is no amount of human
strength, shiny armor nor treasured sword that can always prevent the inevitable. Any character in
literature that is being portrayed immortal is fiction. Beowulf as often as not regards himself as the
one who can conquer all. Beowulf like others is ignorant towards his own mortality. Even though,
Beowulf is successful in his earliest battles he still remains careless to the understanding that he will
die. The concept of mortality was something Beowulf was faced with time and time again. Beowulf
had to discover how accepting one s fate can later become the most rewarding.

Beowulf killed Grendal s mother just like Grendal. He fought again with no regards of the possible
outcomes. He did it for the glory he would receive from the kill. Hrothgar compliments Beowulf after
killing Grendal s mom by saying forever you will be your people s mainstay and your warriors helping
hand . (Beowulf,1707 1709). Hrothgar is one who tries to understand a man s mortality. He informs
Beowulf that he should learn true values and he has wintered into wisdom . (Beowulf,1722 1724). He
alerts Beowulf to the notion that one day he will die. Hrothgar tells Beowulf that no amount of
treasure or victories can gain a man s immortality. Beowulf is advised to not act as Heremod once did.
Heremod s rule only brought death and destruction to the Danish people. (Beowulf,1712 1713). He
killed his fellow comrades and vented rage on any who wrong him. (Beowulf,1713 1715). Hrothgar
does not want Beowulf to be absent minded and ignore the shape of things to come. (Beowulf,1752).
It appears that Hrothgar wants Beowulf to be cautious of his actions. He tells Beowulf to choose
eternal rewards and not give way to pride. (Beowulf,1760). That is Hrothgar s approach to Beowulf
about having and representing Christen behaviors. The course of all the advice given by Hrothgar was
because he wanted Beowulf to accept his mortality. He told Beowulf that although his strength is in
bloom it will fade

Character Analysis of Sam Dawson from the Film, I Am Sam
Case Study of Sam Dawson Author s name Author s institutional affiliation Author s note Case Study
of Sam Dawson Part 1 I. Character Background The name of the film selected for this case study is I
am Sam. (2002) The protagonist of the film is Sam Dawson, who is played by the actor Sean Penn.
Sam Dawson is a developmentally or intellectually challenged adult male, who has a young daughter,
primary school aged, named Lucy. Sam and Lucy live together without her mother, who is a homeless
person. There is not extensive information provided in the film regarding Sam s upbringing, but based
on his present situation, he is a well adjusted person in a middle class atmosphere. It seems he has
enough assets to provide for himself and his daughter in a fairly independent basis. His daughter,
Lucy, is happy and taken care of, but the tension begins when Lucy exceeds Sam s mental capacity.
Her peers ridicule her and her father because of his intellectual deficiencies, calling him a retard. The
character s family consists of Lucy primarily, and some of Sam s other disabled friends who all help
each other. One of Sam s greatest and most prominent likes is that he is a huge fan of the band The
Beatles. One of his strengths is his love for his daughter. Another strength, although it is perceived as a
weakness by others who might prey on him, is that he goes through life with a sense of awe and
naivete. Of course, this is a result of his disability, but even still, he could have

Air Purifiers Advantages
Air Purifiers and Their Benefits.
You may wonder, How do I choose the right air purifier? Each air purifier has its own performance
and technical characteristics. Air purifiers are extremely useful for people with respiratory diseases
such as asthma or allergies and also for people who want to fight against pollution or bad odors.
I invite you to consult the many opinions on air purifiers. There are now high performance air purifiers
perfectly suited for size, performance and budget for homes and small spaces. Air purifier efficiency
depends on certain criteria.
Obviously, the level of effectiveness of the purifier and its speed of treatment depend on the state of
pollution of the air and its dimensions. This is to be taken into account in the choice of the device and
its use. Air purifiers will help you breath clean air, year round.
Initially, air purifiers were found only in industries to filter and remove toxic residues. If the quality of
the air is not excellent, the body must fight to eliminate this pollution and the most fragile people often
develop respiratory diseases (allergies, asthma, cancers, etc.) whose source is certainly partly due to
this pollution (although other factors may come into play).
According to the WHO, formaldehyde (the best known reason for indoor pollution) is present in all
homes of the world at levels of concentration harmful to health. The WHO also indicates that
naphthalene, benzene, nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, trichlorethylene, radon,
tetrachlorethylene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are present in many homes. Pollution that is
biological in nature is caused by bacteria, molds, viruses, pollen, etc.
Pollution that is biological in nature is frequently made worse because of humidity, heat, poor
housekeeping and hot water and air conditioning installations. These issues promote the proliferation
of biological agents, which increases the risk of diffusion in the environment. This is frequently the
case for indoor pollution because it is particularly difficult to prevent.
Purifiers promise to filter most of these indoor pollutants. Providers of air purifiers believe that their
mission is to provide relief, because air pollution affects

Benefits of the Industrial Revolution
The Second Industrial Revolution was sparked by the creation of the railroad. During the Civil War,
railroads existed and were helpful in bringing supplies to troops, but they weren t very reliable as they
would only go on for as long as the owner of the railroad had land. When the owner of the railroad ran
out of land, the railroad would end, and people would have to move the things from the railroad to
another railroad. People did realize, however, how well a railroad could work if they were all
connected. They found that they could make money from the people using their railroad and riding on
the trains, and soon people connected their local railroads together. Railroad barons, like Cornelius
Vanderbilt, bought small railroads from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Andrew Carnegie had a major impact on the second Industrial Revolution.
J.P. Morgan was the leader in the banking industry. In the 1890 s Morgan and his friends invested
money in the stock of troubled corporations. They won seats on the boards of directors because they
were stock holders and from there they directed companies in a way that avoided competition and
made money. Morgan ended up gaining control of most of the nations major rail lines. Then he began
to buy up steel companies and he put them together into one large corporation. By 1901, Morgan was
the head of the United States Steel Company (which included Carnegie Steel) and this was the first
business in the US to be worth more then $1 million.
During the second Industrial Revolution many inventions were created that simplified life. Some
major inventors were Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Bessemer, George Eastman and
George Pullman.
Thomas Edison created the light bulb using electricity in 1878. The light bulb made it possible to
create light at night without the hazard and struggle with a candle and matches just a flick and the light
was on. It could also be used to send signals or messages with Morse code, or a light to show when a
machine was one, etc. Even now people use the light bulb for many things. Almost every household in
the US has lights now. This invention could be one of the most

How Is Heathcliff A Dynamic Character
One of the strongest yet most broken types of people in this world are orphans, the ones who grew up
without parents to teach the ways of the world to them. Very few are so lucky to find families of their
own, and when they do, they are incredibly improved or perilously worse. In the case of Wuthering
Heights, the unfortunate orphan is the character, Heathcliff. Growing up, he was treated with respect
and care from his father, Mr. Earnshaw, like he was his own son, and later was treated like a close
friend by his adoptive sister and love interest, Catherine. However, his adoptive brother, Hindley, was
nothing but discourteous, derogatory, and ghastly towards him. Upon being bequeathed the mansion
and the treasures from his father, Hindley immediately began to treat Heathcliff as nothing more than
a gypsy and a stable boy; no respect, no care, and no love. Heathcliff s character style is very static.

is cursed. When the father dies, his biological son, Hindley, inherits Wuthering Heights and the family
s fortune. Heathcliff is then forced to become the family s servant. Catherine then marries into a
family known as the Lintons so she could be a part of a wealthy, civilized family, but she does not
realize what this does to Heathcliff. Heathcliff then spends the rest of his days deceptively taking
everything away from both the Earnshaws and the Lintons, and becoming the suzerain of both

Homo Sacer Sovereign Power And Bare Life
In this modern era, the value of life is what makes sacrifice meaningful. In Agamben s Homo Sacer:
Sovereign Power and Bare Life he discusses the concept of homo sacer, which is a body that can be
killed but not sacrificed. He also talks about the state of exception and how the sovereign exception
(as zone of in distinction between nature and right) is the presupposition of the juridical reference in
the form of its suspension. (Agamben 21) This concept can be related to the issues involving drones
and drone warfare. In Gregoire Chamayou s A Theory of the Drones, he focuses on how drones are
transforming the laws of wars, and radicalizing certain aspects in warfare, that is bringing in a new era
with immoral dimensions. This could alter the political arena for the countries that already use them.
(13) The danger therefore, does not lie with the drone operators, as they no longer face the danger of
being exposed to the enemy, this has also immunized them to the possible trauma of reflecting upon
their own violence because they are viewing everything though a screen a thousand miles away. The
real danger lies with society as a whole with the politics of waging war removed from the purview of
citizens, this affects societies continued ability to critique or reject violence.
Concepts of Agamben
Agamben discusses several topic such as the homo sacer, sovereignty, and the states of exception,
according to Agamben, sovereignty is the law s threshold with the nonlegal, a

Interactions within Biological Systems Lead to Complex...
Enduring Understanding 4.A: Interactions Within biological systems lead to complex properties.
Overview
Almost every aspect of biology involves interaction between different components and systems. It
starts all the way at the cellular level with the interactions of cell organelles that allow a cell to
function and it goes all the way up to the way different ecosystems come together to form complex
communities and interactions. It is these interactions that make biological systems complex and how
cells are specialized in one animal affects the way that animal interacts with the others around it.
These interactions create ever changing and unique properties that make organisms function in the
way in which they do so.
Essential knowledge 4.A.1: The subcomponents of biological molecules and their sequence determine
the properties of that molecule
Proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates are the four basic macromolecules. Each of these
macromolecules are made up of smaller components that determine the specific macromolecule and
how it functions.
Proteins
Proteins are complex structures made up of chains of amino acids. Each protein has a different
function such as enzymes to catalyze reactions or protein hormones to trigger certain functions of a
cell. First let s start with the most basic component of a protein: an amino acid. An amino acid is made
up of a central carbon atom attached to a hydrogen atom, a carboxyl group, an amino group, and an R
group which varies

Analysis Of Follower By Seamus Heaney
Seamus Heaney s poems Digging and Follower focus on family life, tradition and the pride Haney
feels towards his family, particularly his father and grandfather. They also talk of generation, role
reversal and the passing of the time. The poems describe his father and grandfather working on the
farm and the admiration Heaney feels towards them. This essay will analyse the techniques Heaney
used to convey his deep pride and admiration for his family.
Throughout Follower Heaney consistently describes the strong sense of pride he feels towards his
father.
All I ever did was follow
Is an excellent example of this pride. Heaney uses a hyperbole (all I ever did) to show how much he
looked up to his father and wanted to be him. This child like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It also shows that despite being a hard worker, Heaney s father always had time for his son.
Heaney speaks frequently about his father s skill.
Mapping the furrow exactly
This is a connotation which implies that Heaney s father worked precisely and was experienced in his
job. It reflects pride as it suggests he was extremely intelligent, furthering Heaney s hero complex
towards his father.
Another example of Heaney praising his father s skill is show in this quote;
The sod rolled over without breaking
It is an example of assonance which helps build on the idea that Heaney s father made his work seem
easy. It also shows that Heaney s father was very technically skilled, once again showing that Heaney
saw his father as a hero.
Moving onto the poem Digging which shows the admiration not only for his father but for his
grandfather as well.
By God, the old man could handle a spade. Just like his old man
Heaney s use of emotive language (by God) shows just how strongly he feels about his father and
grandfather. It also suggests the ease and comfort of their

Main Characters In Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman (raised as Diana, princess of the Amazons) was trained for most of her life on
Themyscira to be an unconquerable warrior. But when she saves a drowning pilot who tells her of the

The main character of the film (played by Gal Gadot), Wonder Woman is based on a DC comics

Although I m not a fan of the insane villain trope for me this takes a slightly interesting twist on said
trope because she is doing a job, not a kind, nice or good job but a job nonetheless.
The thing that worries me about Doctor Poison is that DC (if the character is present in the future) will
go down the overplayed and unhelpful route of her being bitter about her facial injury. After binge
watching many super hero movies it shocks me how the overwhelming majority rely on a villain being
disabled and because of that wanting revenge. It frustrates me the messages these villains send to kids.
I hope that DC in the future continues to explore her as a character but in a way that aids the need for
strong female leads. The questions that need to be asked are What if she lived in a time and place
where women could pursue science and achieve and excel without the blessing, permission, or aid of
men? [And] what if it were possible for her work to garner respect without needing to be connected to
some greater, generally masculine goal? {6}. With the possibility of a sequel DC has a chance to break
the traditional super villain mould and have a well developed character who doesn t need to ask for
forgiveness .

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Report
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a disease of the digestive tract that can cause asthma and
other complications. GERD does not affect the heart itself even though the heart can burn as a result;
GERD can mimic the signs of a heart attack. This report will discuss how a prescription is not
necessarily needed for treatment, medicine can be purchased OTC. This disease also affects infants
and small children.
Component I.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disorder disease that causes gastric
acid flow from the stomach to the esophagus. GERD occurs when the stomach is weak or relaxes
inappropriately allowing the flow of gastric content to flow upwards (1998 2015 Mayo Foundation).

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease affects the body as a whole in different ways. GERD can contribute
to asthma due to the fact that acid reflux can irritate the air ways and lungs which affects breathing

contextualizing our material culture, the exhibition is curated by China Marx. The artists shown in the
exhibit are: Garry Noland, Gerry Trilling, and Julie Peppito. I have never truly analyzed art before,
and a textile museum was the last place I pictured myself at Florida Tech. As soon as I walked in I felt
like I was in a whole different world. There were beautiful pieces of handmade jewelry, and scarves

hung from the second floor ceiling down to the ground behind the desk. The banners read Ruth Funk

was right. The exhibition beautifully showed how one can view different aspects of life and
demonstrated the necessity of reusing waste and finding beauty and detail in everything around us.
The first piece that jumped out at me was by Garry Noland, it was sitting on the ground and looked
like three beautiful shiny rocks that were dipped in gold paint. Upon greater observation I realized that
they weren t rocks at all, they were pieces of dirty used Styrofoam with brand new shiny gold duct

The Effects of Television Violence on America Essay
America has the highest crime rate in the world. Along with that crime rate is also the very high
violence rate. Why is violence becoming and everyday event in our society? When you flip on the
television and tune into the news, the highlight of every show is somehow directly related or
connected to violence. We see it every evening and perhaps say Oh my gosh and then forget all about
it two minutes later. Or perhaps we don t even make any comments at all, just a simple grunt or Oh,
how terrible . This numbness to violence is very scary and real. It makes you blind to the fact, that

They need to learn to talk out and solve any disagreements or problems through other means than
violence. They must not know violence as an answer, as if violence was never even an option to
consider in solving a problem. I recently became aware of the problem of violence in children when I
started observing my child at play at my apartment complex. I had watched my daughter play with
many children and never really noticed nothing violent nor aggressive about her. However as she gets
older and more interested in television she is becoming, much more aggressive especially as she plays
outside with her friends. She would punch and copy the moves of the cartoon shows she watched even
to the point of copying their war cries and sayings. The media claims that they have no influence on
children, that could not be further from the truth. Children are the easiest to manipulate and take
advantage of because they are innocent and because they are innocent they are also ignorant. The main
problem was the television shows that she was watching. That is very obvious. The problem was not
just television itself but the combination of television and child. Children are very susceptible and
easily persuaded as we all know. In the early 1960 s, Albert Bandura of Stanford was the first to

Instead of relying solely on external management, they allocate 68% of their endowment to internal

investment professionals and 148 other employees whose jobs were solely to manage the $19 billion
dollars in total assets, of which $15.1 billion were endowment funds. This management strategy
generated expenses of around $93 million dollars per year (49 basis points), and produced a real return
of 11.3%, after expenses. This method of investment costs about 19 more basis points than a passive
strategy and about 51 basis points cheaper than a typical active investment strategy using 100%

Similarities Between Humanism And Italian Humanism
Humanism is a philosophical and ethical stance on the value of human beings. The idea of humanism
started around the early to mid 14th century starting with Petrarch, who is considered to most, as the
father of humanism. Petrarch s expertise in the promotion of this study earned him the name as the

Impact Of Reconstruction During The Reconstruction Period

Genetically Modified Organism ( Gmo )
According to Brock Biology of Microorganisms, a genetically modified organism (GMO) is an
organism whose genome have been altered using genetic engineering (Madigan, Martinko, Bender,
Buckley, and Stahl, 2014). GM products include crops and animals, such as soy, cottonseed, alfalfa,
papaya, canola, and sugar beets. Throughout the years there has been arguments about the safety of
consuming GM products. Some countries believe that GMOs are not safe to consume while other
countries believe that they are safe to consume. More than 60 countries around the world, including
Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, have restriction or bans the

The nine high risk GM products are alfalfa, canola, corn, cotton, papaya, soy, sugar beets, zucchini,
and yellow summer squash. On the other hand, there is monitored risk of production, which means
that there is a suspected or known contamination of GMOs being added to the crops. The eight
monitored risk crops are beta vulgaris (chard, table beets), brassica napa (rutabaga, Siberian kale),
brassica rapa (bok choy, mizuna, Chinese cabbage, turnip, rapini, tatsoi), cucurbita (acorn squash,
delicata squash, patty pan), flax, rice, wheat, potatoes. Nonetheless, crops aren t the only organisms
that have GMOs. GMOs are also being added into animals, however, these modifications were
unsuccessful and terminated. The first example was GMOs being added to salmon. On November 19,
2015 the FDA had approved to genetically modify AquAdvantage salmon. The salmon was safe for
human consumption, but two months after the approval the FDA banned the production of the fish due
to the Congress forbidding the sale of GM salmon. Another example of GMOs being added are to
pigs. Enviropig was a genetically engineered pig that was developed by scientists at the University of

University announced the termination of the Enviropig program, therefore euthanizing the pigs that

The Merchant Of Venice Character Analysis
In The Merchant of Venice, William Shakespeare examines attractive qualities in a royal suitor
through the casket test designed by Portia s late father. Each suitor s choice represents his perception
of himself, Portia, and marriage, therefore can be anticipated by his words and actions prior to and
during the test. The presence and expression of bravado among the men functions as the most
indicative characteristic of the men s choices, as a man s portrayal of himself can tell a great deal
about his views towards women and relationships. This foreshadowing is accomplished through their
boastful diction, willingness to risk, and reactions to the caskets. As the three caskets each represent a
different viewpoint, the three men also represent three distinct personality types, thus different
expressions of confidence which the reader is able to detect through the suitor s words and actions as
they are systematically written by the author. The prince of Morocco is the first suitor whose choice is
included in the play. One important factor in his interactions with Portia is racial prejudice. He
immediately feels the need to acknowledge the elephant in the room with his opening comment
Mislike me not for my complexion.... Portia is polite, but by describing him as fair as any comer I
have looked on yet, it is revealed to the audience she is not enthusiastic about the exotic man, since
her earlier suitors were disagreeable in many ways. This shortcoming may be the reason for

Essay On Cuban Embargo
Embargoes are restrictions on trade between countries used to achieve some kind of goal. The United
States has imposed an embargo on Cuba to encourage the Cuban government to change the way they
run themselves because the United States does not agree with the system of government they have in
place. This embargo enacts total restrictions on trade and travel between the United States and Cuba.
The United States embargo against Cuba should be lifted because it is doing more harm than good to
both countries involved.
To start, embargoes in the United States started with Jefferson s Embargo of 1807 ( The Embargo of
1807 ). Embargoes are put in place by countries in hopes to maintain or restore peace between
countries ( Sanctions, Embargoes and Restrictions ). They can be enacted for a number of different
reasons including moral, political, or environmental objections or concerns (Berkheimer). Embargoes
seek to encourage a country to change the regimes or groups that have allowed the behavior from
which the concerns arise. They do this by way of bans on certain things like travel, arms, or ... Show

Because of the wholesale ban on trade, American food and related supplies cannot be exported to

The Period Of The Antebellum South
The period of the antebellum south was among the most burdensome times for African American
slaves, especially females. During the early 1800s the lives of enslaved women were extremely
demanding. The female slaves were expected to bear children, as well as were required to work just as
hard as the male slaves on the plantation. Days were long and laborious for slave mothers, they had to
make sure that all the work that needed to be done was completed, and also care for their children.
Female slaves jobs varied from housework, to field work. Slave mothers knew that giving up on their
work was not an option, they had to persevere for their families. Motherhood and work went hand in
hand for female slaves, one was not able to do one and not the other. Field labor was an unavoidable
task that was fulfilled by nearly all slaves in the antebellum south. There was no gender discrimination
in the fields, female slaves had to perform almost all of the plantation chores. Some of the chores
female slaves were obligated to complete were picking, hoeing, plowing, mending fences, burning
fields, weeding, planting, and harvesting. The work day was long and grueling, slaves worked from
sunrise to the sunset. Working the fields was a strenuous job, however it was not done alone. They
acquired the opportunity to work beside other female slaves. The groups of female slaves in the fields
were called gangs. The gangs often sang, talked quietly, and passed along confidential information.

Vertical Zonation and the Rocky Shore
According to Yonge (1949), the zoning of both plants and animals within the narrow vertical limits of
a rocky shore is one of the most striking features about shore life. It is noticeable particularly where
sessile organisms (such as barnacles) occur in abundance on the boundaries of their vertical
distribution, as they form a conspicuous line (Boaden Seed, 1985). The author has also been
particularly impressed by clear zonation patterns of brown algae often to be found on rocky shores.
Precise and universal demarcation of these zones is impossible (Brehaut, 1982), but a comprehension
of the vertical zonation of rocky shores is clearly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At mid shore, for example, exposure is 50 percent of the time to air, and 50 percent to water. This area
forms the eulittoral zone, and a greater number of species are found here than in the littoral fringe.
Communities found in this zone must be tolerant of short periods of exposure to air between the tides,
although they almost always require regular submersion or at least a thorough wetting (Tait and
Dipper, 1998). Species include barnacles, mussels, and other sessile forms such as oysters (Boaden
Seed, 1985). The barnacles commonly belong to such genera as Balanus, Chthamalus, and Tetraclita.
There is a strong tendency (Stephenson Stephenson, 1972) for this zone to be further divided into two
or three subzones. In lower subzones, barnacles may be obliterated or overshadowed by other
sedentary forms; but in the higher eulittoral subzones barnacles are greatest in concentration, and
show dominance. The eulittoral is bounded at the top end by the disappearance of barnacles in any
significant quantity (Stephenson Stephenson, 1972).
The lowest part of the shore is uncovered at extreme low water spring tide, never at neap tides, and is
known as the sublittoral zone. Where wave action is particularly strong, this zone may not even be
uncovered except when the lowest spring tides coincide with calm weather. As such, this zone is
exposed to the air for very short periods, and for a very small proportion, of time. In many places, it

The Unions are furious about this, saying that Australian workers should be a priority. The Australian
Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) and the Australian Workers Union (AWU) will continue to push the

Washington In Frederick Douglass The Heroic Slave
In Frederick Douglass The Heroic Slave, readers are first introduced to Madison Washington, an
enslaved black man, through the perspective of the narrator, Mr. Listwell, a white, northern traveller. It
is through this description of his physical features that we are able to catch a glimpse of Washington s
personality one which defies and breaks stereotypes of black men in the nineteenth century. The first
thing one notices about the manner in which Washington is described is the use of contradictory, yet
complementary, descriptors. Listwell says Washington is of manly form, showing Herculean strength.
It is also said that a child might play in his arms, or dance on his shoulders and that his broad mouth
and nose spoke only of good nature and kindness. One other specific phrase that stands out is his face
was black, but comely. This is, in its original biblical usage, a phrase used to describe a woman

China s Drive Toward Ecological Civilization
Moreover, China s drive toward ecological civilization will have far reaching global impacts and

improving environmental quality as our core task, we ve put in place the most stringent environmental
protection system; launched comprehensive campaigns on air, water, and soil pollution prevention and

Meanwhile, we are also keenly aware of the significance of innovation in pursuit of sustainable

First is innovative thinking. The mind guides the individual s actions, and the actions shape the future.
The key is to give equal emphasis to both knowledge and actions, and to let actions speak louder than
words. But in reality, to do is difficult while to know is easy. Achieving sustainable development is no

Rhetorical Analysis Walden
True to Yourself Henry David Thoreau, an alumni of Harvard University, is considered one of the
greatest authors from the 1800s. Although he worked a variety of professions, writing seemed to be
the one he enjoyed best. Thoreau even isolated himself in the woods for two years and wrote about it
in Walden, which is a text reflecting on simple living. In an excerpt of Walden called Where I Lived,
and What I Lived For Thoreau argues that every individual should follow the beat of their own drum.
In the beginning of paragraph seven Thoreau believes we should spend one day as deliberately as
nature (280). To emphasize his point, Thoreau uses anaphora throughout paragraph seven, repeating
the word let several times. Let, a verb, means to not prevent or forbid; allow. By repeating the verb,
Thoreau puts great emphasis on the phrases following let . Thoreau wants people to know that they are
allowed to live life simply. They are allowed to wake and fast or breakfast, they are allowed to let
company come and go, they are allowed to let the bells ring and the children cry. People should ignore
what other people think, or want and focus on what they think, or want. Thoreau wants people to elude
the little things and focus on the bigger, simpler picture for themselves. ... Show more content on

He uses rhetorical questions to highlight this. If the bell rings, why should we run with the crowd?
(280). If people went with the crowd, like birds flying south for the winter, they may never discover
what they want, just what the crowd wants. Running with the crowd, a person will never reach their
individual goals. To believe in your own thought, to believe in your goals, to believe in yourself, that
is going against the crowd. Unable to reach someone else s goals, they need to strive for their own
goals. Swimming against the stream, Thoreau isolated himself from society, simplified his life, and

The Lab Must Stay Clean And Sterile
Laboratories across the United States have many different ways of operating in order to collect

Shortly after emailing him about observing the lab, he connected me with a graduate student name

steps that were taking place, quickly I realized, that extensive note taking on everything that I could

French And Vietnam War Essay
Essay 1 War did not necessarily end for France and Vietnam as the curtains closed on World War Two.
Indochina had been subjugated to French colonial rule for decades leading up to the war, and the
western power desired to reassert its authority in southeast Asia once more. Imperial motives were at
the heart of the French agenda. The loss of Indochina could be a costly blow in terms of power and
international presence. But hindering the spread of global communism held increasing importance as
well, especially to the United States, who would turn out to be one of France s only allies in the fight
for Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh and his guerrilla forces would not be easy to defeat. Chinese authorities in

position has drawn widespread criticism from our allies and the international community majority of
whom have all legally abolished the death penalty or have abolished it in practice. Since the early

data from universities, professors and, most importantly, hundreds of students. Moreover, the author

  • 2. Whale Hunting In Makah Culture The debate in this article can be really boiled down to people s view of animal rights and cultural rights (Van Grinkel, 2004). For fifteen hundred years the Makah having been conducting whale hunts with it being one of the main aspects of their culture. In 1855 a treaty was signed in which they forfeited thousands of acres of their land to the federal government in exchange for the ability to continue their whale hunts. However, in the 1920s traditional whale hunting by the Makah stopped for a variety of reasons. In 1937 grey whaling was official out lawed. Fast forward to 1995 when the Makah culture wanted to resume the traditional whale hunting. After some intense legal battles with the government they were allowed too. They relearned all the ways their ancestors did this hunt. This was not just the tools for the hunt but the spiritual aspects such as the releasing of the whale s soul and the wives symbolically representing the actual whales during the hunts. While the effects from the whale hunt for the culture were good some negative ones arose from the public. The public believed that this hunt was immoral and barbaric because they wanted to protect the whale. The hunt was almost complete based on traditional practices except for a rifle they used to instantly kill the whale after it has been caught. The protestors were angry about that but they didn t consider how much more humane it was to kill the whale like that. While orginally it was under guise of protecting the whales it turned to blatant racism when they called the Makah savages, barbarians, and other derogatory ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There is no amount of human strength, shiny armor nor treasured sword that can always prevent the inevitable. Any character in literature that is being portrayed immortal is fiction. Beowulf as often as not regards himself as the one who can conquer all. Beowulf like others is ignorant towards his own mortality. Even though, Beowulf is successful in his earliest battles he still remains careless to the understanding that he will die. Hrothgar is one who tries to understand a man s mortality. He informs Beowulf that he should learn true values and he has wintered into wisdom . (Beowulf,1722 1724). He alerts Beowulf to the notion that one day he will die. Hrothgar tells Beowulf that no amount of treasure or victories can gain a man s immortality. Beowulf is advised to not act as Heremod once did. Heremod s rule only brought death and destruction to the Danish people. (Beowulf,1712 1713). He killed his fellow comrades and vented rage on any who wrong him. (Beowulf,1713 1715). Hrothgar does not want Beowulf to be absent minded and ignore the shape of things to come. (Beowulf,1752). It appears that Hrothgar wants Beowulf to be cautious of his actions. He tells Beowulf to choose eternal rewards and not give way to pride. (Beowulf,1760). That is Hrothgar s approach to Beowulf about having and representing Christen behaviors. The course of all the advice given by Hrothgar was because he wanted Beowulf to accept his mortality. Character Background The name of the film selected for this case study is I am Sam. (2002) The protagonist of the film is Sam Dawson, who is played by the actor Sean Penn. Sam Dawson is a developmentally or intellectually challenged adult male, who has a young daughter, primary school aged, named Lucy. Sam and Lucy live together without her mother, who is a homeless person. There is not extensive information provided in the film regarding Sam s upbringing, but based on his present situation, he is a well adjusted person in a middle class atmosphere. It seems he has enough assets to provide for himself and his daughter in a fairly independent basis. His daughter, Lucy, is happy and taken care of, but the tension begins when Lucy exceeds Sam s mental capacity. Her peers ridicule her and her father because of his intellectual deficiencies, calling him a retard. The character s family consists of Lucy primarily, and some of Sam s other disabled friends who all help each other. One of Sam s greatest and most prominent likes is that he is a huge fan of the band The Beatles. One of his strengths is his love for his daughter. Another strength, although it is perceived as a weakness by others who might prey on him, is that he goes through life with a sense of awe and naivete. Of course, this is a result of his disability, but even still, he could have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Air Purifiers Advantages Air Purifiers and Their Benefits. You may wonder, How do I choose the right air purifier? Each air purifier has its own performance and technical characteristics. Air purifiers are extremely useful for people with respiratory diseases such as asthma or allergies and also for people who want to fight against pollution or bad odors. I invite you to consult the many opinions on air purifiers. There are now high performance air purifiers perfectly suited for size, performance and budget for homes and small spaces. Air purifier efficiency depends on certain criteria. Obviously, the level of effectiveness of the purifier and its speed of treatment depend on the state of pollution of the air and its dimensions. This is to be taken into account in the choice of the device and its use. Air purifiers will help you breath clean air, year round. Initially, air purifiers were found only in industries to filter and remove toxic residues. If the quality of the air is not excellent, the body must fight to eliminate this pollution and the most fragile people often develop respiratory diseases (allergies, asthma, cancers, etc.) whose source is certainly partly due to this pollution (although other factors may come into play). According to the WHO, formaldehyde (the best known reason for indoor pollution) is present in all homes of the world at levels of concentration harmful to health. The WHO also indicates that naphthalene, benzene, nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, trichlorethylene, radon, tetrachlorethylene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are present in many homes. Pollution that is biological in nature is caused by bacteria, molds, viruses, pollen, etc. Pollution that is biological in nature is frequently made worse because of humidity, heat, poor housekeeping and hot water and air conditioning installations. These issues promote the proliferation of biological agents, which increases the risk of diffusion in the environment. This is frequently the case for indoor pollution because it is particularly difficult to prevent. Purifiers promise to filter most of these indoor pollutants. Providers of air purifiers believe that their mission is to provide relief, because air pollution affects ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During the Civil War, railroads existed and were helpful in bringing supplies to troops, but they weren t very reliable as they would only go on for as long as the owner of the railroad had land. When the owner of the railroad ran out of land, the railroad would end, and people would have to move the things from the railroad to another railroad. • 8. How Is Heathcliff A Dynamic Character One of the strongest yet most broken types of people in this world are orphans, the ones who grew up without parents to teach the ways of the world to them. Very few are so lucky to find families of their own, and when they do, they are incredibly improved or perilously worse. In the case of Wuthering Heights, the unfortunate orphan is the character, Heathcliff. Growing up, he was treated with respect and care from his father, Mr. Earnshaw, like he was his own son, and later was treated like a close friend by his adoptive sister and love interest, Catherine. However, his adoptive brother, Hindley, was nothing but discourteous, derogatory, and ghastly towards him. Upon being bequeathed the mansion and the treasures from his father, Hindley immediately began to treat Heathcliff as nothing more than a gypsy and a stable boy; no respect, no care, and no love. • 9. Homo Sacer Sovereign Power And Bare Life In this modern era, the value of life is what makes sacrifice meaningful. In Agamben s Homo Sacer: Sovereign Power and Bare Life he discusses the concept of homo sacer, which is a body that can be killed but not sacrificed. He also talks about the state of exception and how the sovereign exception (as zone of in distinction between nature and right) is the presupposition of the juridical reference in the form of its suspension. (Agamben 21) This concept can be related to the issues involving drones and drone warfare. In Gregoire Chamayou s A Theory of the Drones, he focuses on how drones are transforming the laws of wars, and radicalizing certain aspects in warfare, that is bringing in a new era with immoral dimensions. This could alter the political arena for the countries that already use them. (13) The danger therefore, does not lie with the drone operators, as they no longer face the danger of being exposed to the enemy, this has also immunized them to the possible trauma of reflecting upon their own violence because they are viewing everything though a screen a thousand miles away. The real danger lies with society as a whole with the politics of waging war removed from the purview of citizens, this affects societies continued ability to critique or reject violence. Overview Almost every aspect of biology involves interaction between different components and systems. It starts all the way at the cellular level with the interactions of cell organelles that allow a cell to function and it goes all the way up to the way different ecosystems come together to form complex communities and interactions. It is these interactions that make biological systems complex and how cells are specialized in one animal affects the way that animal interacts with the others around it. These interactions create ever changing and unique properties that make organisms function in the way in which they do so. Essential knowledge 4.A.1: The subcomponents of biological molecules and their sequence determine the properties of that molecule Proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates are the four basic macromolecules. Each of these macromolecules are made up of smaller components that determine the specific macromolecule and how it functions. The Merchant Of Venice Character Analysis In The Merchant of Venice, William Shakespeare examines attractive qualities in a royal suitor through the casket test designed by Portia s late father. Each suitor s choice represents his perception of himself, Portia, and marriage, therefore can be anticipated by his words and actions prior to and during the test. The presence and expression of bravado among the men functions as the most indicative characteristic of the men s choices, as a man s portrayal of himself can tell a great deal about his views towards women and relationships. This foreshadowing is accomplished through their boastful diction, willingness to risk, and reactions to the caskets. As the three caskets each represent a different viewpoint, the three men also represent three distinct personality types, thus different expressions of confidence which the reader is able to detect through the suitor s words and actions as they are systematically written by the author. During the early 1800s the lives of enslaved women were extremely demanding. The female slaves were expected to bear children, as well as were required to work just as hard as the male slaves on the plantation. Days were long and laborious for slave mothers, they had to make sure that all the work that needed to be done was completed, and also care for their children. Female slaves jobs varied from housework, to field work. Slave mothers knew that giving up on their work was not an option, they had to persevere for their families. It is noticeable particularly where sessile organisms (such as barnacles) occur in abundance on the boundaries of their vertical distribution, as they form a conspicuous line (Boaden Seed, 1985). At mid shore, for example, exposure is 50 percent of the time to air, and 50 percent to water. This area forms the eulittoral zone, and a greater number of species are found here than in the littoral fringe. Communities found in this zone must be tolerant of short periods of exposure to air between the tides, although they almost always require regular submersion or at least a thorough wetting (Tait and Dipper, 1998). Species include barnacles, mussels, and other sessile forms such as oysters (Boaden Seed, 1985). The barnacles commonly belong to such genera as Balanus, Chthamalus, and Tetraclita. There is a strong tendency (Stephenson Stephenson, 1972) for this zone to be further divided into two or three subzones. In lower subzones, barnacles may be obliterated or overshadowed by other sedentary forms; but in the higher eulittoral subzones barnacles are greatest in concentration, and show dominance. The eulittoral is bounded at the top end by the disappearance of barnacles in any significant quantity (Stephenson Stephenson, 1972). The lowest part of the shore is uncovered at extreme low water spring tide, never at neap tides, and is known as the sublittoral zone.
