Persuasive Essay About Beauty
Walking into BSW Beauty in Mattapan or any other beauty supply store in the hood is like walking
into another universe. Cheap ugly bright lipsticks grab your eye immediately. Bags of hair hang from
the ceiling. There is abundant amount of ECO Styler gel, cheap gold jewelry, and every hair accessory
known to any human. It is a home to many beautiful Brown women struggling to make themselves fit
society s definition of beautiful in a world that does not pay them any mind. If you look past owners
who often are not of the community, indiscreetly following customers around as if they are going to
steal something, and the lasting effects of colonization that are hidden in the ingredients of the skin
lightening lotions on the shelves of the skin care aisles, it is almost an Utopia, almost. And while it
may not an Utopia, it is a home. It is the kind of magic that is the result of most hood creations. They
tried to destroy us, but we still here. Scraping the dirt and grime from the bottoms of barrels and still
making it look golden. Can you see, it s in our strides, and it s in our appearance. And our appearances
the fashions that we wear, specifically feminine fashions have existed as a disruption of the politics of
poverty that say that poor people can t have nice things. Our fashions roar, making up for all the years
that the world tried to take our voices. How fitting that people who society says are worth nothing are
the people that are upholding themselves as royalty? This is

Symbolism In A Hanging By George Orwell
By examining George Orwell s short story, A Hanging, one can see that the symbolism of the
unexpected canine, and the symbolic action of stepping around a puddle can illustrate the importance
of each individual life. To start off, it is evident in the story that the presence of an animal was not a
common occurrence within the walls of the prison. As the narrator observed the prisoner due to be
hanged, he saw that he was not much more than a Hindu man approaching death. But unexpectedly, a
joyous dog appeared and approached the scene of people and went straight for that Hindu man. It s
love and attention for the prisoner put everyone around them in shock, as the action began to
humanize and be rid the anonymity that the prisoner s life once ... Show more content on

The realization of the catastrophic deeds being carried through to be rid those full, healthy lives
reinstated the narrator s morality for that short period of time. The immediate transition of thoughts is
clearly demonstrated when the narrator states, It is curious, but till that moment I had never realized
what it means to destroy a healthy, conscious man. When I saw the prisoner step aside to avoid the
puddle, I saw the mystery, the unspeakable wrongness, of cutting a life short when it is in full tide
(Orwell 2). If it were not for the prisoner caring about such a miniscule act, the sensitization towards
the prejudice murders being committed would not have occurred as strongly to the narrator. The
unspeakable wrongness of cutting a life short when it is in full tide developed his understanding of the
wrongdoing behind the negative imperialistic environment that surrounds him. This emphasizes to the
reader how a slight reaction that is often dismissed, can symbolize the deeper value of a healthy,
conscious man having enough dignity left to avoid such a small mishap like stepping in a

Branch Immaterial Officer
The position of a branch immaterial officer essentially implies that the officer holding such a position
is not attached to any specified branch of the Army (Zurick, 2010). This position also means that a
commissioned officer may fill that particular position. I really look forward to working as a branch
immaterial officer because this position provides me with an excellent opportunity to explore my
skills and abilities in a wide range of duties and activities. More significantly, this position presents
me with a superb opportunity to gain more knowledge in the different areas that I may have to work. I
feel that working in this position will therefore enable me to become an outstanding officer in my
career because I will be able to work with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One critical advantage that I can easily associate this position with is the ability to equip officers with
a wide range of skills, all of which are necessary to the success of an officer. Secondly, the position of
a branch officer provides the officers with valuable opportunities to interact with officers with
different specializations, which is critical to the development of essential leadership skills and the
accumulation of vital information or knowledge to facilitate leadership later in one s career. In
addition, this position provides officers with an exceptional opportunity to develop essential skills in
communication and teamwork (U.S. Army War College, 2012). One of the disadvantages associated
with this position is the possibility of stagnation in one s career, especially where such an officer does
not develop a positive attitude toward the position, thus failing to recognize valuable opportunities for
career development. Secondly, officer holding this position are likely to consider it to be a waste of
their time, especially when the officers have careers that involve high level of specialization in
technical fields and the officers are unable to identify key development areas to pursue. Thirdly, such
positions could lead in high levels of inefficiency especially in situations where the officers are not
motivated to work in those positions. Despite these disadvantages, I still look forward to holding the
position of a branch immaterial position because I consider the advantages to be significantly
outweighing the

Tell Tale Heart Literary Devices
Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees very gradually I made up my mind to
take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever. Edgar Allan Poe is the author of
Tell Tale Heart, a horror story with a lot of suspense and many different literary writing techniques
infiltrated into the story. In fact, Poe is a master of suspense and horror and the literary techniques he
uses in his writing intensify these two characteristics. Three techniques the Poe uses in Tell Tale Heart
are similes, punctuation and repetition, and point of view. One of the literary techniques that Poe uses
in Tell Tale Heart are similes. One of the reasons that Poe uses similes when he is writing Tell Tale
Heart was because similes were a good way to help get what he was thinking/his point across to the
reader. An example of him doing this in Tell Tale Heart was whenever Poe was talking about how
stealthy and carefully he would watch the man at night. Poe writes So I opened the lantern you cannot
imagine how stealthily, stealthily until at length, a single dim ray, like the thread of the spider, shot out
from the crevice and fell upon the vulture eye. This example from Tell Tale Heart also shows another
reason why Poe uses similes in his writing. This reason is because the similes that Poe uses helps his
readers see the image that he is trying to paint for them more clearly. Finally, Poe uses similes in his
writing because they can help keep his readers focused and because similes can also help grab a reader
s attention. An example of this from Tell Tale Heart is whenever Poe is talking about the beating sound
that he hears that keeps getting louder and louder. He writes, the sound increased...and what could I
do? It was a low, dull, quick sound, as a watch enveloped in cotton... Poe used similes like this one to
help keep his readers interested in what he had to say. In Tell Tale Heart, Poe uses punctuation and
repetition to intensify his writing. One reason why Poe likes to use this literary technique in his
writing so much is because it helps build suspense in the story. Since Poe likes to write horrifying and
suspenseful stories and he likes to keep people on the edge of their

Senators Should Be Elected

Senators should be Elected When they call the roll in the Senate, the senators do not know whether to
answer present or not guilty (Theodore Roosevelt/Google Images.) The Senate plays an important role
in the Canadian government. Canada s Senate today is made up of a variety of backgrounds such as
different cultures and religions. It also includes both men and women. The Senate looks at the
different issues that individuals or groups might have. They look at the children, veterans, the poor, the
elderly and much more. Senators look at issues in more depth. When the House of Commons passes a
bill, it must also pass a vote in the Senate before it becomes a law. Canada s Senate consists of one

People believe that senators should be elected not appointed. In Canada, the members that work in the
Senate are all established by the Prime minister. This system has been going on for many years but
Canadians think that the senators should be elected because many of the members lack their jobs and
many don t put their best effort into it. The Senate is run differently than the House of Commons. In
the Senate, there is no time limit for when the bill is do which gives senators the freedom to take as
much time needed to study the bill but sometimes senators take advantages of that by not spending
enough time on the bill and by not doing the best work. If senators get elected they would be
representing the people which means have bigger responsibilities toward the people. Senators would
want to do really good and work more efficiently because they would want to be elected again in the
next election. Senators jobs are based on the different groups in society senators take a look at issues
and bills that come from the House of Commons in more depth. Canadians think that if senators were

Keita
Learning the traditional purpose of one s name serves a core value. Until, these valuable lessons begin
to impede on one s daily life; which was demonstrated in the film Keita: The Heritage of the Griot.
The film was directed and written by Dani Kouyate, whose father, Sotigui, starred as the Griot in the
film. Mabo, one of the main roles within the film, is the depiction of a child living a post colonial
lifestyle within Africa. If not for Djeliba (the Griot) for entering Mabo s life, he would have never
have known the importance of his name. The film is a description of Mabo s history, name and
purpose, the deciding factor for him is to adhere to or precede with this path presented by Djeliba.
The post colonial lifestyle, has value to those within it, but when it is disturbed by the ancestral
calling, the reaction varies. Mabo, seeks curiosity and pride from his name, but as his family, teacher
and other influences begin to disrupt his lessons with Djeliba; it becomes obvious the amount of

Although, throughout the film there were moments that seemed to be irrelevant, yet it is possible not

was a hidden personal expectation of the direction the scenarios could have went. Overall, the film left
an impact, as to self reflection and relating to my personal life. Especially, as the parents within the
film dispute over who knows best for Mabo, allows the viewer to see that is an universal conflict. The
characters within the film all brought a different perspective to the storyline. Though when observing
the characters, Mabo left an impression, the viewer can connect with him as he learns of his ancestors

Self-Destruction In Stephen Crane s Untitled
There is a strain between what is good for the body and the reality of human nature. Individuals know
mistakes will occur, but they do not understand how to nurture themselves. Because of this reality,
people tear themselves apart, thinking it is the reasonable reaction. In Stephen Crane s poem, Untitled,
symbolism and religious indicators illustrate the theme of self betrayal.
Firstly, nature is typically fruitful; however, a desert is the antipode of this definition. Most plants
cannot grow in the desert climate, creating a barren, unwelcoming environment; this is where Stephen
Crane places his poem. The naked, bestial (2) creature the narrator sees is the only other living object
in this desert, representing self destruction. Innate in one s being, self destruction sucks dry a once
blossoming environment, turning oneself into a hell or purgatory like habitat. Life is difficult, yet self
destruction makes one bitter. The heart is bitter bitter, (7) says the creature. Although a typical human
wouldn t know what a heart tastes like, the fact it is described as bitter puts the reader off. Rather ...

Given the creature is self destruction, the presence of the narrator illustrates one s contentment in
giving in to the process. Using the phrase my heart (10) creates the connection between the individual
and the destruction. Without the connection, one could distance oneselves from their exterior and their
interior. One can have power over this self hatred; however, I is simply watching as the creature ruins
the core of the body. The narrator tries to appeal to the creature by calling it friend, (6) but this is not
enough for it to stop eating the heart. Instead, the individual makes small talk. In a way, this appeal
demonstrates one s offering of self care. One s heart being the fruit of one s labor; the narrator gives
up. Primal and controlled beasts become one with the last

Early Cinema Versus Modern Bodies Of Work
When looking at early cinema compared to modern bodies of work, one thing that has changed
dramatically was the way films were edited. From the 1900s through the 1960s, films such as L
Arroseur arrosé, Battleship Potemkin, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Citizen Kane, all had their own
way of telling a visual narrative. I m going to give examples of how editing evolved and what
techniques were developed. When looking at the Lumiére bros, one of their earlier works L Arroseur
arrosé , the editing was very simple. What we see on screen is a wide angle two shot of a man working
in a garden, using a hose. Now here s the key component, by choosing a wide angle shot, we re able to
see a second man walk into frame stepping on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his experiment, Kuleshov placed actor Ivan Mosjoukine with shots of three different subjects: a
hot plate of soup, a girl in a coffin, and a pretty woman lying in a couch. The footage of the actor was
the same expressionless gaze. The audience thought his performance was amazing, even though in
each shot he looked hungry, then sad, then lustful. As mentioned in Sikov, Film Studies: An
Introduction, Eisenstein used montage to convey and explore revolutionary ways for the audience to
watch films. Eisenstein believed that montage must consist of colliding shots. Editing the shots
rapidly, to exhibit conflict, making a sequence that more intense. His film, Battleship Potemkin, is a
great example of the soviet montage. There s one sequence in particular, The Odessa Step that helps
express this. It starts out with a wide angle shot of the crowd, followed by multiply medium shots of
the citizens waving to the sailors. shows their facial expression, as they have wave to the ship. Then
suddenly, we get a closeup shot of a woman in distress, quickly followed by a extreme closeup shot of
the same woman, looking even more frantic. As we see the citizens of Odessa run in terror, one thing
that stands out, is the woman with the white umbrella. As the citizens run franticly down the steps, the
woman runs directly into the camera, by doing so, she creates her own cut in the clip. Next he swiftly
cuts to a extreme long shot showing a soldiers following the

Positive And Negative Effects Of American Imperialism
In my point of view, the colonial period shifted the balance previously present throughout the world,
in which imperialism had less relevance in everyday lives. Before the colonial period, the natives
living in the Americas and the Caribbeans, mainly had internal fighting or conflicts between rival
tribes. While in Europe, the most tension occurred between major empires competing for trade, land,
recourses, and wealth. However, once the Europeans began colonizing America, both of the worlds
collided in a massive fight for sovereignty and wealth. This can be seen in each country s colonization
of America. In the French colonization, the colonist traded advanced weaponry to the Huron tribe for
fur and strong alliances. Consequently, the natives ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the colonial period, portrayed a time in which a variety of people were severely abused and
many conflicts were provoked, there were also many positive sides towards the American
colonization. This positive side promoted societal growth and increased numerous countries` wealth
dramatically. For example, the English found an outlet to employ many of their low class peasants in
their Chesapeake colonization, and also found a way to produce large amounts of rice, tobacco, and
many more exports. In addition to obtaining expensive goods and recourses, American colonization
gave European empires the opportunity to expand their rule across oceans. However, In some
situations this reaped negative results, such as the British attempt to excessively control their colonies
by unconstitutionally issuing new taxes. One can even go as far to say that American colonization led
to the separation of the British empire. Thus, there were both positive and negative aspects towards
American colonization, but if all the senseless deaths were worth the society we have today, will be a
question debated for many

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), psychologists provide services with

of Matthew s assault there was not any legislation regarding hate crimes that referred to anti gay acts

interesting sources came from: The better Bladder Book What s Bugging your Bladder by Wendy
Cohan. The chapter pg 96, discusses the role of food sensitivity in IC. It argues that food sensitivities
play a huge role in causing or worsening bladder symptoms and can also contribute to harmful
inflammation throughout the body. A lot of this relates to the types of foods we eat and how our bodies
process those foods. In my own experience in trying to find the right treatment options, diet was one
of the first that I had to change. Things that are high in acid like tomatoes could cause a painful flare
up that could last from hours to days, or even months, so eliminating this from my diet was one way to
eliminate another painful flare. This book was written with a copyright date of 2011, and since then,

Slobodan Miloševićs role in the destruction of Yugoslavia
Slobodan Milošević was an instrumental part of the Yugoslav Wars, his actions were the greatest
factors in the ethnic tensions sparking into an all out war. He used the Serbian media to great effect as
he was able to change the Serbian people s option of the conflict to benefit his actions. Also his
influence over the Serbian people gave him unchecked authority with his internal actions.
Everything spiralled down after the Leader of Yugoslavia Marciall Tito died on the 4th of May 1980

present to maintain the ritual of pre game prayers. The Court also found that the voting factor used by
the school to determine whether a prayer would be given and who would give it only worsened the
Establishment Clauses issues since the different religious groups within the school now became rival
political factors. Voting for the speaker guaranteed not religious conflict, but also guaranteed that the

Religious groups that would be heard is the majority religion. These factors led the Court to find that
the district policy on pre game
prayers resulted in both perceived and real validation of religion by the government, and

My First Semester At Mesa College
This is my first semester at Mesa College. I am currently a Political Science major. The term that
would best describe my current situation would be non traditional student. I graduated from high
school in 2006. Since then I have gotten married, travelled the world, and had two children. While in
high school I excelled and took part in many academic extra curricular activities. In the past ten years
I have accumulated work and life experience. Most recently I was able to work as a legal assistant for
an immigration firm. Being bilingual was beneficial, as was my interest in law in general. I plan on
attending law school in the future which made the job appealing. Although I deferred college for this
long it has always been my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite its location the University of California San Diego has an undeniable reputation, attrition rate,
and success rate of graduates; as well as a more appealing curriculum.
As stated above the University of California San Diego is not in the most desirable location, however I
believe it is the right choice after Mesa. UCSD is located in La Jolla at 9500 Gillman Drive (Make
Waves,2016). The nearest four year university for me would be San Diego State University. I currently
live in Chula Vista making UCSD a 28 minute drive time, not factoring in traffic (Travelmath,2016).
In comparison SDSU would be a 17 minute drive. Brenda Antonio, a manager in the accounting
department at UCSD, lives in my neighborhood and has stated that her average drive time on a
weekday morning is an hour (Antonio,2016). An hour commute may sound like an inconvenience but
there some positive aspects to a long commute. In a study done by the Australian National University
it was found that many people enjoy their commute and, said this was the only time they got to
themselves during the week, and so used it to dream, relax and meditate (Bissel, 2015). In addition, I
personally enjoy driving and don t mind the commute. Although an hour long commute is not ideal
there are certain options in order to reduce the negative aspects. Scheduling classes during low traffic
times and maximizing the time spent commuting, like listening to books on tape, would

Pluripotent Stem Cell Essay
A review on Induction of Pluripotent Stem Cells from Mouse Embryonic and Adult Fibroblast
Cultures by Defined Factors
¬Stem cells are yet undifferentiated cells, with the potential capability to further divide indefinitely,
and the ability to give rise to more specialized cell types. Embryonic stem(ES) cells are of especially
great importance due to their pluripotency and hence ability to differentiate to cells of all three germ
layers. Due to the great replicative powers of these cells, they may be used to treat degenerative
diseases, or injuries to the nervous system. However, as these ES cells are extracted from blastocysts,
an ethical dilemma arises, not to mention potential rejection of foreign bodies in patients. Typically, in

The 24 candidate genes were then introduced to mouse embryonic fibroblast(MEF); when grown, no
single candidate was capable of activating the Fbx15 locus. Conversely when all 24 candidates were
expressed Yamanaka and Takahashi were able to obtain multiple G418 resistant colonies. The
experiment was repeated, and six colonies were chosen. Out of these six, four displayed morphology
and proliferation properties which were highly similar to ES cells. Reverse transcriptase PCR(RTPCR)
revealed several ES cell markers, and further analysis provided evidence that it was a combination of
some of the 24 factors which induced pluripotency.
To find the specific combination required to induce pluripotency, Yamanaka and Takahashi observed
the effect of removing certain factors. A total of ten factors were noted to have critical effect on the
early growth of cells; removal of any of these ten factors resulted in no colony growth within the first
ten days of culturing. Furthermore, when these ten genes were combined, Yamanaka and Takahashi
noted that the resulting cells were more similar to ES cells than cells with all 24 factors were
transduced. Out of these ten factors, further factors were withdrawn; when factors Oct ¾ or Klf4 were
removed no G418 resistant colonies formed. Moreover, when Sox2 was removed minimal colonies
formed. While resistant colonies still formed despite the removal of c Myc, the colonies had a
distorted morphology from regular ES cells (Figure 1). The

Personal Behavior Change
Everyone has different challenge in his/her life ,and he/she may have different view on the same thing.
Therefore, people will have different goals which they are eager to achieve. Based on what my life
looks like and what I need in my life, my behavior change is to exercise at least one hour every day.
The reasons why I choose this goal are because I want to spend some time relaxing from my daily life,
and get the balance between education and occupation. Moreover, I expect to burn the fat in my body
because I spend very little time for workout since I got a job. When I planned to accomplish this
behavior change, I knew that challenges or difficulties would appear, I could not avoid them and I
could not finish it easily. But I am the kind of person who likes challenge and I am not afraid of it.
Therefore, I chose this behavior change. During the process of this behavior change, I met a lot of
difficulties and I learn how to get balance well in my life. The first and the biggest difficulty is time
because the time availability is limit for me. Because I have two summer classes and I need to work
five days weekly, time is huge challenge for me during the process. My schedule looks like going
school on the morning and working at the evening. Therefore, the only ... Show more content on

After accomplishing this behavior change, I also find that there is a big potential ability for me and I
believe that if I spend time and work hard, I can get through everything no matter how hard it is. And
if I had chance to select a behavior to change, I would do the same thing again because it is full of
challenges for me. But I would reduce the time for working or others so that everything can get
balance if I continue to keep working on this behavior change. I will try my best to continue this
behavior change because it will make my body strong and

Improving Short-Term Working Memory
The area of my memory that I have focused on improving is my short term working memory. Even
with rehearsals of 30 seconds plus, information is often not retained for recall a short time later. I
would greatly enjoy the ability to remember items without a contextual cue around them; such as
phone numbers or a list of five random items. In my experiment I am testing for two things. One, is
Information is being quickly displaced by other information and two if when worked on, can short

with little extra stimuli; my windowless bathroom.

The Narrative Of Arthur Gordon Pym Of Nantucket
Compulsion is present everywhere. Whether it is someone telling you if something is right vs. wrong
or it is growing up in a society that shaped one to think and behave in a certain way; compulsion is a
variable that has always existed. One of the largest visible cases of mass compulsion is that involved
in the slavery of Africans. Folks were compelled to believe that there was justification for believing
whites were superior to blacks, and blacks were compelled to believe they were lesser humans than
whites were. In, Melville and American Power , there is a lot of discussion over the inferiority of
blacks. Individuals in society conceived this notion of inequality, which was than passed on from
generation to generation. Racism is just one specific example of compulsion. In The Narrative of
Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket you see many situations and scenes where compulsion plays a
essential role. Though slavery is not an essential component of this text, there are some underlining
racist comparisons that are the result of compulsion. Most of the white characters in this novella are
civilized and come from well educated backgrounds. The black savages, whom were the natives on
the island Tsalal, in this novella are portrayed as being exactly that: savages. The blacks are primitive
and cruel, folks that are superstitious and are masterminding a plot against the whites. These are all
misconceptions and stereotypes about that people have because as a society we have been

Multicultural Barbie And The Merchandising Of Cultural...
Cultural Differences Cultural differences in my definition refer to differences among people because
of their racial or ethnic background, gender, language, nationality, sexual orientation, dress and
traditions. These differences can bring strength to the group if valued and integrated into the group
dynamics, at the same time it can also weaken a group as differences in interpretation of events can
lead to miscommunication, awkwardness and hostilities if not addressed. Prejudices about people of
different backgrounds can also lead people to jump to conclusions and misinterpret actions and
behaviors. In the article, Dyes and Dolls: Multicultural Barbie and the Merchandising of Difference,

Appiah describes this tolerance as becoming more cosmopolitan, which is to have a wider
understanding of other cultures and then be more understanding of their differences. As Appiah gives
an example where he writes, People are disgusted by the idea of drinking orange juice that has a
cockroach in it, even if they know the cockroach was rigorously cleaned of all bacteria by being
autoclaved in advance (662).We need to understand how cultures have values and that certain actions
are deemed taboo and that many cultures agree those actions taboo, but, there are other cultural
actions that are everyday life for those who are raised in that society such as, eating cats, or even
eating a red pepper on a Wednesday. According to Kwaine Anthony, Cosmopolitans suppose that all
cultures have enough overlap in their vocabulary of values to begin a conversation. But they don t
suppose that we could all come to agreement if only we had the same vocabulary (664). I do feel if we
had a universal language there would still be difficulties. Even if we set aside our language barriers we
cannot set aside our culture, our values, and our blood deep belief system, a cosmopolitan society may
still be a long way

Balzac And The Little Seamstress Essay
As a person begins to develop their own identity, their relationships with others can change based on
their newly acquired values. Beauty in a relationship has an ability to alter the way an individual sees
their partner as well as change the expectations that they have for one another. The passing of time
influences the way a person will look at their partner and critique them because with the passing of
time altercations in relationships need to be made in order to help it survive. In Balzac and the Little
Seamstress, Dai Sijie uses visual imagery to substantiate the concept of intimate relationships needing
more than just a physical to thrive as both Luo and the Narrator have essentially fallen in love with the
beauty of the Little Seamstress but not her persona. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The beauty of the Little Seamstress is first captured through her eyes that had the gleam of uncut
gems, of unpolished metal (24). Sijie uses the gleam of her eyes as a symbol of purity for the Little
Seamstress and shows an untainted aspect that attracts the boys to her. The Narrator proceeds to
examine the Seamstress s face that possessed an impressive, sensual beauty (25). She became a
beacon of light whose beauty entranced Luo and the Narrator and arouse in us [Luo and Narrator] an
irresistible desire to stay (25). However, even though she attains such beauty Luo persists that she s
not civilised enough to have fallen in love with her but he does fancy her (27). The limitations Luo
puts on the Little Seamstress s intellectual abilities leads him to focus more on her beauty as he sees it
as her greatest strength and quality. The emphasis on imagery when describing the Little Seamstress
complimented the concept of beauty presented throughout the

Health Spending Account
Any time that an avenue can be explored which benefits both sides of the aisle, it should be covered

the employer, who pays payroll taxes as well. This could be as much as a ten percent savings. OFTEN

The HAS is independent of the insurance plan, so it goes with the employee. If next year finds a better

keep looking for better plans. INTEREST CREATED THROUGH THE INVESTMENTS OF THE

  • 2. Persuasive Essay About Beauty Walking into BSW Beauty in Mattapan or any other beauty supply store in the hood is like walking into another universe. Cheap ugly bright lipsticks grab your eye immediately. Bags of hair hang from the ceiling. There is abundant amount of ECO Styler gel, cheap gold jewelry, and every hair accessory known to any human. It is a home to many beautiful Brown women struggling to make themselves fit society s definition of beautiful in a world that does not pay them any mind. If you look past owners who often are not of the community, indiscreetly following customers around as if they are going to steal something, and the lasting effects of colonization that are hidden in the ingredients of the skin lightening lotions on the shelves of the skin care aisles, it is almost an Utopia, almost. And while it may not an Utopia, it is a home. It is the kind of magic that is the result of most hood creations. They tried to destroy us, but we still here. Scraping the dirt and grime from the bottoms of barrels and still making it look golden. Can you see, it s in our strides, and it s in our appearance. And our appearances the fashions that we wear, specifically feminine fashions have existed as a disruption of the politics of poverty that say that poor people can t have nice things. Our fashions roar, making up for all the years that the world tried to take our voices. • 3. Symbolism In A Hanging By George Orwell By examining George Orwell s short story, A Hanging, one can see that the symbolism of the unexpected canine, and the symbolic action of stepping around a puddle can illustrate the importance of each individual life. To start off, it is evident in the story that the presence of an animal was not a common occurrence within the walls of the prison. As the narrator observed the prisoner due to be hanged, he saw that he was not much more than a Hindu man approaching death. But unexpectedly, a joyous dog appeared and approached the scene of people and went straight for that Hindu man. It s love and attention for the prisoner put everyone around them in shock, as the action began to humanize and be rid the anonymity that the prisoner s life once ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The realization of the catastrophic deeds being carried through to be rid those full, healthy lives reinstated the narrator s morality for that short period of time. The immediate transition of thoughts is clearly demonstrated when the narrator states, It is curious, but till that moment I had never realized what it means to destroy a healthy, conscious man. When I saw the prisoner step aside to avoid the puddle, I saw the mystery, the unspeakable wrongness, of cutting a life short when it is in full tide (Orwell 2). If it were not for the prisoner caring about such a miniscule act, the sensitization towards the prejudice murders being committed would not have occurred as strongly to the narrator. The unspeakable wrongness of cutting a life short when it is in full tide developed his understanding of the wrongdoing behind the negative imperialistic environment that surrounds him. This emphasizes to the reader how a slight reaction that is often dismissed, can symbolize the deeper value of a healthy, conscious man having enough dignity left to avoid such a small mishap like stepping in a ... • 4. Branch Immaterial Officer The position of a branch immaterial officer essentially implies that the officer holding such a position is not attached to any specified branch of the Army (Zurick, 2010). This position also means that a commissioned officer may fill that particular position. I really look forward to working as a branch immaterial officer because this position provides me with an excellent opportunity to explore my skills and abilities in a wide range of duties and activities. More significantly, this position presents me with a superb opportunity to gain more knowledge in the different areas that I may have to work. One critical advantage that I can easily associate this position with is the ability to equip officers with a wide range of skills, all of which are necessary to the success of an officer. Secondly, the position of a branch officer provides the officers with valuable opportunities to interact with officers with different specializations, which is critical to the development of essential leadership skills and the accumulation of vital information or knowledge to facilitate leadership later in one s career. In addition, this position provides officers with an exceptional opportunity to develop essential skills in communication and teamwork (U.S. Army War College, 2012). One of the disadvantages associated with this position is the possibility of stagnation in one s career, especially where such an officer does not develop a positive attitude toward the position, thus failing to recognize valuable opportunities for career development. Secondly, officer holding this position are likely to consider it to be a waste of their time, especially when the officers have careers that involve high level of specialization in technical fields and the officers are unable to identify key development areas to pursue. Thirdly, such positions could lead in high levels of inefficiency especially in situations where the officers are not motivated to work in those positions. Despite these disadvantages, I still look forward to holding the position of a branch immaterial position because I consider the advantages to be significantly outweighing the ... • 5. Tell Tale Heart Literary Devices Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees very gradually I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever. Edgar Allan Poe is the author of Tell Tale Heart, a horror story with a lot of suspense and many different literary writing techniques infiltrated into the story. In fact, Poe is a master of suspense and horror and the literary techniques he uses in his writing intensify these two characteristics. Three techniques the Poe uses in Tell Tale Heart are similes, punctuation and repetition, and point of view. One of the literary techniques that Poe uses in Tell Tale Heart are similes. One of the reasons that Poe uses similes when he is writing Tell Tale Heart was because similes were a good way to help get what he was thinking/his point across to the reader. An example of him doing this in Tell Tale Heart was whenever Poe was talking about how stealthy and carefully he would watch the man at night. Poe writes So I opened the lantern you cannot imagine how stealthily, stealthily until at length, a single dim ray, like the thread of the spider, shot out from the crevice and fell upon the vulture eye. This example from Tell Tale Heart also shows another reason why Poe uses similes in his writing. This reason is because the similes that Poe uses helps his readers see the image that he is trying to paint for them more clearly. Finally, Poe uses similes in his writing because they can help keep his readers focused and because similes can also help grab a reader s attention. An example of this from Tell Tale Heart is whenever Poe is talking about the beating sound that he hears that keeps getting louder and louder. He writes, the sound increased...and what could I do? It was a low, dull, quick sound, as a watch enveloped in cotton... Poe used similes like this one to help keep his readers interested in what he had to say. In Tell Tale Heart, Poe uses punctuation and repetition to intensify his writing. One reason why Poe likes to use this literary technique in his writing so much is because it helps build suspense in the story. Since Poe likes to write horrifying and suspenseful stories and he likes to keep people on the edge of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Senate plays an important role in the Canadian government. Canada s Senate today is made up of a variety of backgrounds such as different cultures and religions. Until, these valuable lessons begin to impede on one s daily life; which was demonstrated in the film Keita: The Heritage of the Griot. The film was directed and written by Dani Kouyate, whose father, Sotigui, starred as the Griot in the film. Mabo, one of the main roles within the film, is the depiction of a child living a post colonial lifestyle within Africa. If not for Djeliba (the Griot) for entering Mabo s life, he would have never have known the importance of his name. The film is a description of Mabo s history, name and purpose, the deciding factor for him is to adhere to or precede with this path presented by Djeliba. The post colonial lifestyle, has value to those within it, but when it is disturbed by the ancestral calling, the reaction varies. • 8. Self-Destruction In Stephen Crane s Untitled There is a strain between what is good for the body and the reality of human nature. Individuals know mistakes will occur, but they do not understand how to nurture themselves. Because of this reality, people tear themselves apart, thinking it is the reasonable reaction. In Stephen Crane s poem, Untitled, symbolism and religious indicators illustrate the theme of self betrayal. Firstly, nature is typically fruitful; however, a desert is the antipode of this definition. Most plants cannot grow in the desert climate, creating a barren, unwelcoming environment; this is where Stephen Crane places his poem. The naked, bestial (2) creature the narrator sees is the only other living object in this desert, representing self destruction. Innate in one s being, self destruction sucks dry a once blossoming environment, turning oneself into a hell or purgatory like habitat. Life is difficult, yet self destruction makes one bitter. The heart is bitter bitter, (7) says the creature. Although a typical human wouldn t know what a heart tastes like, the fact it is described as bitter puts the reader off. Rather ... Using the phrase my heart (10) creates the connection between the individual and the destruction. Without the connection, one could distance oneselves from their exterior and their interior. One can have power over this self hatred; however, I is simply watching as the creature ruins the core of the body. The narrator tries to appeal to the creature by calling it friend, (6) but this is not enough for it to stop eating the heart. Instead, the individual makes small talk. In a way, this appeal demonstrates one s offering of self care. One s heart being the fruit of one s labor; the narrator gives up. Primal and controlled beasts become one with the last ... • 9. Early Cinema Versus Modern Bodies Of Work When looking at early cinema compared to modern bodies of work, one thing that has changed dramatically was the way films were edited. From the 1900s through the 1960s, films such as L Arroseur arrosé, Battleship Potemkin, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Citizen Kane, all had their own way of telling a visual narrative. I m going to give examples of how editing evolved and what techniques were developed. When looking at the Lumiére bros, one of their earlier works L Arroseur arrosé , the editing was very simple. In his experiment, Kuleshov placed actor Ivan Mosjoukine with shots of three different subjects: a hot plate of soup, a girl in a coffin, and a pretty woman lying in a couch. The footage of the actor was the same expressionless gaze. The audience thought his performance was amazing, even though in each shot he looked hungry, then sad, then lustful. As mentioned in Sikov, Film Studies: An Introduction, Eisenstein used montage to convey and explore revolutionary ways for the audience to watch films. Eisenstein believed that montage must consist of colliding shots. Editing the shots rapidly, to exhibit conflict, making a sequence that more intense. His film, Battleship Potemkin, is a great example of the soviet montage. There s one sequence in particular, The Odessa Step that helps express this. It starts out with a wide angle shot of the crowd, followed by multiply medium shots of the citizens waving to the sailors. shows their facial expression, as they have wave to the ship. Then suddenly, we get a closeup shot of a woman in distress, quickly followed by a extreme closeup shot of the same woman, looking even more frantic. As we see the citizens of Odessa run in terror, one thing that stands out, is the woman with the white umbrella. • 10. Positive And Negative Effects Of American Imperialism In my point of view, the colonial period shifted the balance previously present throughout the world, in which imperialism had less relevance in everyday lives. Before the colonial period, the natives living in the Americas and the Caribbeans, mainly had internal fighting or conflicts between rival tribes. While in Europe, the most tension occurred between major empires competing for trade, land, recourses, and wealth. However, once the Europeans began colonizing America, both of the worlds collided in a massive fight for sovereignty and wealth. This can be seen in each country s colonization of America. In the French colonization, the colonist traded advanced weaponry to the Huron tribe for fur and strong alliances. Consequently, the natives ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the colonial period, portrayed a time in which a variety of people were severely abused and many conflicts were provoked, there were also many positive sides towards the American colonization. This positive side promoted societal growth and increased numerous countries` wealth dramatically. For example, the English found an outlet to employ many of their low class peasants in their Chesapeake colonization, and also found a way to produce large amounts of rice, tobacco, and many more exports. In addition to obtaining expensive goods and recourses, American colonization gave European empires the opportunity to expand their rule across oceans. However, In some situations this reaped negative results, such as the British attempt to excessively control their colonies by unconstitutionally issuing new taxes. One can even go as far to say that American colonization led to the separation of the British empire. Thus, there were both positive and negative aspects towards American colonization, but if all the senseless deaths were worth the society we have today, will be a question debated for many ... On the night of October 6, 1998, upon leaving a bar in Laramie, Wyoming, Matthew Shepard was robbed, tortured, continuously beaten and terrorized by Russel Henderson and Aaron McKinney. Pluripotent Stem Cell Essay A review on Induction of Pluripotent Stem Cells from Mouse Embryonic and Adult Fibroblast Cultures by Defined Factors ¬Stem cells are yet undifferentiated cells, with the potential capability to further divide indefinitely, and the ability to give rise to more specialized cell types. Embryonic stem(ES) cells are of especially great importance due to their pluripotency and hence ability to differentiate to cells of all three germ layers. Due to the great replicative powers of these cells, they may be used to treat degenerative diseases, or injuries to the nervous system. Conversely when all 24 candidates were expressed Yamanaka and Takahashi were able to obtain multiple G418 resistant colonies. The experiment was repeated, and six colonies were chosen. Out of these six, four displayed morphology and proliferation properties which were highly similar to ES cells. Reverse transcriptase PCR(RTPCR) revealed several ES cell markers, and further analysis provided evidence that it was a combination of some of the 24 factors which induced pluripotency. To find the specific combination required to induce pluripotency, Yamanaka and Takahashi observed the effect of removing certain factors. A total of ten factors were noted to have critical effect on the early growth of cells; removal of any of these ten factors resulted in no colony growth within the first ten days of culturing. Furthermore, when these ten genes were combined, Yamanaka and Takahashi noted that the resulting cells were more similar to ES cells than cells with all 24 factors were transduced. Out of these ten factors, further factors were withdrawn; when factors Oct ¾ or Klf4 were removed no G418 resistant colonies formed. Moreover, when Sox2 was removed minimal colonies formed. While resistant colonies still formed despite the removal of c Myc, the colonies had a distorted morphology from regular ES cells (Figure 1). The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. The Narrative Of Arthur Gordon Pym Of Nantucket Compulsion is present everywhere. Whether it is someone telling you if something is right vs. wrong or it is growing up in a society that shaped one to think and behave in a certain way; compulsion is a variable that has always existed. One of the largest visible cases of mass compulsion is that involved in the slavery of Africans. Folks were compelled to believe that there was justification for believing whites were superior to blacks, and blacks were compelled to believe they were lesser humans than whites were. In, Melville and American Power , there is a lot of discussion over the inferiority of blacks. Individuals in society conceived this notion of inequality, which was than passed on from generation to generation. Racism is just one specific example of compulsion. In The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket you see many situations and scenes where compulsion plays a essential role. Though slavery is not an essential component of this text, there are some underlining racist comparisons that are the result of compulsion. Most of the white characters in this novella are civilized and come from well educated backgrounds. The black savages, whom were the natives on the island Tsalal, in this novella are portrayed as being exactly that: savages. The blacks are primitive and cruel, folks that are superstitious and are masterminding a plot against the whites.
