Gender Roles And The Medias Influence On Gender

Thought Paper #1
Gender roles, sex roles and the medias influence on gender have always seemed to play a key role in
society. They define the outcomes for the men and woman that are growing up in today s age. men are
taught to be strong, willing and show no emotion. Meanwhile woman are taught to be beautiful, kind
and delicate. These concepts show that the over powering force of society and that the media have
immense control of how boys and girls grow up with a heavy burden to bare.
Gender roles are very strong chains to break, they define what is and isn t allowed. During the 2008
campaign trail senator Hillary Clinton was bombarded with various forms of verbal abuse. When
speaking to a crowd of her supporters a couple of men in the crowd began to chant a variety of
demeaning phrases at the former secretary of state. This form of actions shows that people aren t
accepting of different genders. The idea of gender roles being able to decide whether or not a
candidate is suitable ultimately based on what he/she identify as is a devastating blow to any feminist
movement in the world. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Nicaraguan Politics and Government Essay
Nicaraguan Politics and Government
On the narrow isthmus known as Central America, between the world s two greatest oceans,
Nicaragua has been marked by endless years of political turmoil, social tension and economic dismay.
The turmoil s that have shaken the country make it plausible to believe that by some metaphysical law,
Nicaraguan politics have accommodated to nature s tantrums. Like its diverse, rugged and seismically
active geology, the country s politics have been irregular, impulsive and often explosive (Pastor, 15).
The Nicaraguan election of February 25, 1990 represents the country s attempt to break from its
turbulent political past and pursue economic and political stability through the establishment of a
democracy. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There was much speculation regarding the potential outcome of the election especially regarding the
possible social upheavals that could have resulted in yet another Civil War. The National Vote
Counting Center was not announcing results until every electoral ballot had been counted, but quick
counts conducted by both sides of the opposition as well as by the representatives of the monitoring
international organizations hinted at the possible victory of UNO. As a result the concern had shifted
as to how to ensure a smooth transition while preventing any possible social upheavals. Daniel Ortega
expressed his concern to Carter in meeting that took place the night the polls were closed: I wanted to
talk to you about what could be an eventual triumph of UNO, and take steps to ensure that if this
occurred, it would not produce a bad outcome. There is a section within UNO who would be so
encouraged by a UNO victory that they might want to provoke acts of violence against the FSLN....
There could be a civil war. The conduct of the U.S. government would be decisive (Pastor, 261). Due
to the cooperation of the opposition party s especially in calming and controlling their supporters, the
announcement of the UNO victory did not result in any social repercussions and hence helped
Nicaragua serve as an exemplary model to the international community proving that peaceful
transition is in fact possible. Despite Barrios s success in the election her tenure

Street and documentary photography captures a subject or...
Street and documentary photography captures a subject or situation in a candid moment. The theme of
the images can be broad. A portrait of a begging homeless child on a city street to a man walking his
dog in an inner city park can remain under the umbrella of street and documentary photography as the
photographer is capturing an honest reflection of that particular environment.
The introduction of portable cameras has made it feasible for anyone with basic knowledge of how to
use a camera to now go out and record what they see. However, what one chooses to photograph is
still a reflection on them as well as well as the scenes they witness.
Street and Documentary photography can send shockwaves throughout the world. Whether a ... Show

Street photography is a branch of documentary photography, but instead demonstrates the
photographer s vision of the world as opposed to an explicit social agenda. For example, documentary
photography can record all works of life but the majority are often dedicated to showing the life of
underprivileged or disadvantaged people to highlight the social injustice.
Recording this genre of society goes back to the early 19th century. Photographs Of The Old Closes
and Streets of Glasgow, 1868 77 , was a documentation of the slum areas in Glasgow.
Another example is Street Life in London , published in 1877, which documented how the advanced
stages of industrialization in the 19th century impacted on social life. In 1936 socially committed
photographer, Bill Brandt, published the illustrated book The English at Home , in which he portrayed
the English class society and how the Great Depression had affected them. In the mid 1930s such
invasive photography was rare and the unsettling social questions raised by Brandt s photographs were
then rarely discussed. However, subsequently Brandt was commissioned by the Ministry of
Information to photograph life in the London Underground bomb shelters during the Blitz.
His uncompromising eye for detail made Brandt one of Britain s most influential and internationally
admired photographers of the 20th century. Through

Mr. Mcgarvey s Case Analysis
Mr. McGarvey currently resides at 51831 S. Riverside Rd. 7B in Index, WA with his father and
younger sibling whom is developmentally delayed. Mr. McGarvey reports that his mother past away
some years ago from natural causes.
Mr. McGarvey began seeing this provider on 4.22.15 for sex offender specific treatment. He reports
that he completed sex offender treatment while serving his criminal sentence for his index sex offense
in the Monroe Prison Facility and upon his release from prison participated in treatment group with
another treatment provider. According to Mr. McGarvey, he could no longer continue treatment with
that provider because of his physical limitations. He reports that the providers building did not have an
elevator and because of his declining physical health, taking the stairs to see her was no longer
possible.
It is clear that Mr. McGarvey has physical limitations, he walks with a cane and his gate appears
labored. Recently, in July 2015, Mr. McGarvey complained of chest pain and loss of overall strength,
something he sought guidance from his primary care physician, but ignored her urgent
recommendation that he admit himself to a hospital. Days after his physician recommended he admit
himself to the hospital, while at home, his pain escalated and emergency medical response was

I Am A Safe Haven At Your Hands
Imagine having a safe haven at your hands, any time of the day. It is 2013, and I am in seventh grade.
I am scrolling through Twitter in my dark room when I come across a page called Buddy Project, and
decide to read into it. As I am reading, with the light from my phone illuminating my face, I find out
that it s a nonprofit organization that pairs you with a person. It is meant to help you deal with an
eating disorder, self harm, suicidal thoughts, and mental illnesses. I am seeing all of this information
and I know I need to join the project. It was that one day in November that changed my life forever.
I remember my heart racing when I was paired with my first buddy. I found out that her name was
Abby; she was dealing with an eating disorder and suspected she was depressed. We both hadn t
gotten help at this point, so it wasn t truly beneficial. Pain and darkness were consuming our lives, but
speaking up didn t seem like an option. The next year, 2014, I met two new people. Their names were
Danielle and Jay. Again, mutual effort was being made, but nobody got the help they needed yet. I saw
blood curdling messages, but I knew it was my job to help as best as I could. I felt like I was drowning
and gasping for air, but my main priority was the other people. Even though there was a disclaimer
that says not to use the project as a replacement for getting help, that is what so many people did.
Trying to help someone who wouldn t get professional help is the type of thing

Romeo Monologue
Benvolio is sitting on a step after Romeo has fled the scene
How could Romeo do such a thing? (stands up) And he just runs off without owning up to it! I thought
of Romeo as a better man but I guess that Mercutio is family and we would do anything for each other
(sits back down on the step). The amount of times Romeo has lashed out I can count on just one hand,
he has changed since the party and I need to figure out why. Did Tybalt say something to him, did
Rosaline reject him again? Maybe that s why he has given up on her, finally! (smirks). Why am I
thinking about this right now? I need to be thinking about what Romeo did! Where would he be by
now? How will the Capulet s ever forgive him? What if he gets banished, what if he gets killed? Oh
dear, wherefore art thou Romeo. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I mean I just witnessed a murder! But Romeo is family and that would be betrayal. I tried so hard to
make sure there would be peace between us and the Capulets yet it seems like I just made it worse.
How will I deal with the guilt when I don t confess. I won t be able to control myself. The fate of
Romeo s life is in my hands and I can t let him down except I can t let Verona down either. (annoyed)
The amount of times I ve had to save him from the Capulet s is ridiculous but he never listens and gets
beat up and attacked. Maybe I should turn him in, it wasn t my fault was it? (shaking his head). I
should have stopped him from leaving the beach to go fight Tybalt but there is no way I could have
calmed him down. I could see the fire in his eyes and nothing would stop him from getting revenge
against Tybalt. The anger he all of a sudden had for Tybalt was too overwhelming for him and I guess
he couldn t take it. He went from not wanting to fight him at all at the beach but as soon as Mercutio
was killed he went on a rampage. I would have never imagined even in my dreams that Romeo would
do such a thing. I guess he s different

Amendment ensures the freedom of religion for all American citizens. The relevant part of the First
Amendment to this analysis talks about how congress will not make any laws specifically addressing

school to allow a course involving Bible Literacy, not stop a course currently offered by the school.
People in support of the course argue that many of the figures referenced in the Bible are referenced
throughout world history and today and that learning these figures will actually help their education.
Those who support the course support the course as an elective class or on that a student chooses to
take. Those opposed to the course question what the phrase Bible Literacy means and how exactly the
Bible will be taught. Concerns over students who do not come from religious households or religions
that do not use the Bible were brought up. It is assumed at this point that the course is approved by the

I Watched It Die By Teresa Sandoval
She watched it die.
At the top of her apartment complex, above families and lovers, perched a figure on the ledge of the
rooftop. It stood above layers of humanity in that complex, liveliness indicated by the lights shining
through the different curtains and blinds covering most of the windows of the complex. The figure
stepped closer to the edge, its head turned to Teresa Sandoval. The silhouette reminded her of a
woman: the harsh wind pulled back its hair and a sheet cascaded down the building.
The smell of red wine and smoke stung her eyes. Teresa stood underneath the one working streetlight
on the entire street: all the other lights flickered. As the figure moved closer to the edge, the lights
flickered even more. The buzzing grew louder. Teresa s cheeks were red from the alcohol she had
downed only fifteen minutes earlier and the cold wind slapping against her cheeks. She leaned against
the pole, her burning eyes still fixed on the shadow as it halted right up to the ledge. She glanced
quickly at the pavement in front of her then right up to the figure. The moon shone brightly behind the
figure, long black hair illuminated. As it walked closer, the lights behind the windows at the feet of the
figure were killed. She felt like she was at a shootout with an unknown enemy. She pretended the
sweat slicking her neck was from the hot desert air, that her eyes were stinging from the sand flying to
her face. Teresa scratched her wrist, a habit of hers when nerves consume

Symbolism In The Cask Of Amontillado
The story of a Cask of Amontillado is a story of how hate can consume someone to the point of
hurting someone. The story has plenty of irony but the symbols in this story show a whole side readers
may not have seen if the symbols were not added. The cask of wine, the coat of arms of Montresor s
family, and the family moto are the symbols that stood out the most though out the story. First, the
Cask of wine is a symbol of if a feeling comes up that something might be better than it seems, it most
likely is. Fortunato is trying to boost and show his wine tasting skills. In doing this he is only hurting
himself by trying to boost and show up. Being like Fortunato is in this part is not a good decision
because he just let his pride get him killed.

Reflection Paper On Rock Climbing
Reflection Paper #3 During Week 3, we started our day on the bad side due to the lack of sleep, and
the change of weather. Throughout the day our energy level improved as the day went on. The field
activity for the day included rock climbing. Discussion of group dynamics, rock climbing technique
and leave no traces were brought up through out the day.
Group Dynamic The group dynamic was really off since the morning started. Everyone was gloomy
and sleepy. I know that I personally slept for four hours the night before . Which leads me to almost
thought about just coming to class two hours late just because of how unmotivated my mindset was at
the time. Even in the group setting, it was not just me who was low on morale, it was everyone in
class too. This can affect our group s energy and it lowered morale and excitement within the rank.
Sitting inside and listening to presentation all day long do not help . The idea of going out and moving
around have help with our engird level. This is useful for leading group in time of low energy like
what we went through that day. When it came to lunch time, people were feeling better due to having
food in our system, and the active hand on cooking hlep made us more active. With food in our
tummy, we were able to feel the energy to participate in our rock climbing.
Rock Climbing Technique Rock climbing was a very intense workout. I have not rock climb for a long
time, I remembered the first time that I did, it took me a long time to

Cons Of Modern Technology
Introduction: In the modern era, the thing that is being used the most is the technology. Technology
makes work easy for human beings and gradually they are replacing humans. It has pros and cons.
With the help of latest technological machines work is being done much faster and the problem is lack
of jobs. Now a day s technology is being used and extensively being spread around the world. Modern
and latest technological tools can be used by people at whatever place and all the time around the
world. Statista published the article Number of Internet Users Worldwide 2005 2017 states that the
given data on the cumulative users of the internet around the worldwide from 2005 to 2017 are 3.5

Bartleby, the Scrivener the Lady with the Dog Essay
A number of the stories studied this semester explore the conflict between social restraint and inner
compulsion. Discuss at least two of the stories in the light of this.
Through an exploration of the boundaries between social constraint and inner compulsion, Melville
and Chekov reveal the restrictions forced upon one s personal desires as they struggle to find a balance
between conflicting values and social norms. Anna and Gurov in The Lady with the Dog are restrained
by the socially expected conventions in their marriages, inhibiting their ability to express their inner
compulsion of desire. Chekov reveals their yearning to escape their individual lives as they cope with
personal troubles by distancing themselves from marriage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He uses his employment as a means of escaping social conventions through his monotonous statement
I would prefer not (Melville 1998, p. 198), living a life of choice and preference in a world where
preference is non existent. Bartleby represents a new form of humanity where an individual has the
right to choice rather than living a life of routine through social constraints, defying all forms of
society s restrictions in order to reveal his true desires.
Chekhov explores this concept of conflict through Anna and Gurov s relationship in The Lady with
the Dog as he reveals a need to defy social restraints in order to escape their marriages as this restricts
them from fully embracing their desires. The image of the long grey fence adorned with nails
(Chekhov 1998, p. 371), symbolises the confines of marriage keeping them apart, unable to be free
from social restraint. Creating an air of seclusion and limitations, this depiction appears to be fending
off Gurov, producing a feeling of entrapment and isolation as it separates their love. The image of an
old woman, a beggar and a dog walking in and out of the fence freely further emphasises this lack of
freedom they have in their lives; the portrayal of a beggar being the most illuminating aspect of this
passage. Even what is considered as the lowest form of humanity, appears to show more freedom then
what they can as they cannot pass this

Products and Services for Consumers
1. Debate the issue of global versus adapted products for the international market. A recurring debate
exists relative to product planning and focuses on the question of standardized products marketed
worldwide versus differentiated products adapted or even redesigned for each culturally unique
market. Those with a strong production and unit cost orientation advocate standardization and others,
perhaps more culturally sensitive, propose the policy of a different product for each market. The issue
cannot be resolved with a simple either/or decision. Cost revenue analyses need to be done and
decisions made in the hard, cold lights of profitability. There is no question that significant cost
savings can be realized from having standardized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Industrialized countries have the highest quality image, and there is generally a bias against products
from developing countries. Within groups of countries grouped by economic development there are
variations of image. For example, one study of COE between Mexico and Taiwan found that a
microwave oven manufactured in Mexico was perceived as significantly more risky than an oven
made in Taiwan. However, for jeans there was no difference in perception between the two countries.
One might generalize that the more technical the product, the less positive is the perception of one
manufactured in a less developed or newly industrializing country. There is also the tendency to favor
foreign made products over domestic made in less developed countries. Not all foreign products fare
equally well since consumers in developing countries have stereotypes about the quality of foreign
made products even from industrialized countries. A survey of consumers in the Czech Republic found
that 72 percent of Japanese products were considered to be of the highest quality, German goods
followed with 51%, Swiss goods with 48%, Czech goods with 32% and, last, the United States with
29%. One final generalization about COE involves fads that often surround products from particular
countries or regions in the world. These fads are more often product specific and generally involve
goods that are themselves faddish in nature. European consumers are apparently

Outline For Harrison Bergeron
The story Harrison Bergeron is about a society in the future where people with beauty, strength, or
intelligence are given handicaps in order to decrease these abilities they were born with so they are
able to be brought down to a level that would make everyone equal to each other. Due to this, one
Harrison Bergeron stood against the government by removing his handicaps as to regain his freedom
from them, all while being watched on television by George and Hazel Bergeron. The book Harrison
Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut is a story that teaches readers that you should never let anyone take away
your freedom from you.
One example of when you can that freedoms shouldn t be taken away in this story is on page 2.
During this scene, Hazel suggests that George takes his handicaps off, but he responds by telling her
that he has become used to them, and they ve become a part of him. Although he says they no longer
bother him, Hazel also mentioned to George all of a sudden you look so tired. This shows that even
though the people being affected were subliminal to it, they were having their freedoms taken away
from them. Also, having their freedoms taken away from them, even without realizing, was taking a
negative toll on the people in this story. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

story shows the theme of you shouldn t let others take away your freedom because, without the
handicaps that inhibited them, Harrison Bergeron and his empress were limitless. Their abilities

Pro And Negative Effects Of Islamophobia
But as we say Muslims empire was scary because it was powerful so in beginning of the eighteenth
century with the decreasing of the Ottomans power and the rapid increase of European empire powers,
Islam was not that much scary anymore and Islamophobia was disappeared gradually.
However, Islamophobia picked up again when these European powers, which were mainly Christians,
decrease again after World War II. While European countries and some of Asian ones and USA were
burning in World War II fire most of the Islamic nations being far of WW heart had time to become
industrialized and powerful in their own right. Also, improvements in healthcare and medical facilities

civil wars or hate news in media make everything even worse, in my opinion, this time, its west who
should learn from the east. Instead of being afraid of Muslims and Islam west should try to learn about
Islamic cultures and show respect to it while accepting it differences. Also, it will be so effective if
western society shows they are putting difference between radical Muslims and others ones. West
should keep in mind that radical Islam problem cannot be solved without the help of other Muslims so

Political Changes In The 1920s
Politics:
Politically, the 1920s could be described as pro business and anti union. These two main principles of
our political time period directly contrast that of the error of reforms pre war America was in. Coming
into this decade, the war has come to an end and now the U.S believes it is time for a hedonistic
interlude. A time of less reforms and more business. Post war America is a start of a new chapter for
our young country which obviously comes with its own set of problems.
After the war, our former president Woodrow Wilson brings forth the idea of the League of Nations
which begins to split the countries population depending on their political views of the super pact.

family life and careers of their own. One of the most enduring images of the 1920s is that of the

While the main purpose of a documentary film is to provide a well rounded view of a clear subject
sometimes complex. The filmmaker is supposed to put forth this information and allow the audience
to form their own view and opinion. The biggest issue with the film thus far is that it doesn t provide a

them into categories of immediate, short term and long term goals. My immediate goals include
completing assignments by their due date, reading the assigned material before it is discussed in class
and being fully prepared to face the next day of classes. Short term goals include doing well in each of
my courses, successfully participating in extracurricular activities, and learning about the engineering
profession by participating in student engineering societies. Long term goals include graduating with a
bachelor s degree in engineering, getting a position as an engineer, and becoming a leader within the

What Is The White Man s Burden Imperialism
Everybody Wants to Rule the World Imperialism has slowly disappeared as nations have developed.
However, the idea of spreading one nations idea and power through other lands was once a very
popular and practiced idea. Once the United States became free of Great Britain s rule, many in the
new county believed it was the United States job to spread the idea of democracy and freedom
throughout the world. This was a form of imperialism and one advocate of this way of thinking was
Rudyard Kipling who wrote the poem titled The White Man s Burden: The United States The
Philippine Islands, 1899. At the time, the ideas in the poem were common, as Imperialism was a
common practice. On the other hand, now and days this poem is seen by many as unacceptable and
unethical. The intentions of Kipling are clear, and the topic raises many questions on the art as a

Analysis Of Paris Is Burning
COMPARISON OF PARIS IS BURNING AND HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE
Ava Morrow
History 3220
The United States in the 20th Century
November 13, 2017 Beginning in the mid 1980 s, a number of efforts were initiated to bring
awareness and enlightenment to the actual tragedy of AIDS. Two films that evolved out of these
awareness campaigns were the documentaries Paris Is Burning and How to Survive a Plague . Both
films, although in significantly diverse ways, provide a window into the alternative lifestyles of LGBT
people of the times and the problems and issues they faced. A comparison of these two documentaries
demonstrates the initial fears of the public and affected people and the beginnings of acceptance or at
least tolerance of these alternative lifestyles.
The movie Paris Is Burning is a documentary film exploring race, gender, and sexuality within the
African American and Latino gay and transgender communities of the ball culture of New York in the
mid to late 1980 s. Ball culture is a term used to describe the underground sub culture of LGBT people
who walk or compete for trophies in events known as balls. The film chronicles the ostentatiously
arranged competitions in which participants, within a very specific theme, must walk while being
judged on criteria such as the authenticity and beauty of their apparel and their dancing ability. Much
of the film shows footage of actual balls interspersed with interviews of prominent members of this
drag scene. The film shows people of different gender identities and their varied methods of
expressing themselves while also exploring how they cope with racism, AIDS, poverty, and
homophobia.
How to Survive a Plague is a documentary movie which depicts the early years of the AIDS epidemic
and the efforts of ACT UP and other groups. ACT UP, founded in March 1987, is an advocacy group
which supports legislation and medical research and treatment of AIDS victims. The film used
archived footage of news coverage, interviews, protests, meetings, and conferences to chronicle the
struggles of AIDS activists from the start of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in New York City. It focused on
the efforts of these activists to obtain meaningful responses from medical

Essay On Male Circumcision
The choice of circumcision is purely a personal choice and an elective procedure that each family can
make their own decision on. However, there are many medical benefits that have medical evidence to
support. Male circumcision is the removal of some or all of the foreskin covering the head of the penis
(Circumcision Academy of America, 2016). This procedure is one of the most common medical
procedures performed on male infants in the United States, typically occurring after 24 hours of life,
and almost always done within 10 days. There is current evidence that the health benefits of newborn
male circumcision outweigh the risks, and therefore justify access to this procedure for families who
choose it (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2012). There are many medical benefits of circumcision

Circumcision reduces the risk of penile cancer. It has been found that the incidence of penile cancer is
about 1 in 100,000, but in uncircumcised men is 1 in a 600 chance (Hall, 2008). Penile cancer is
almost exclusively found in uncircumcised men. Uncircumcised men have a higher etiological risk
including of human papillomavirus (HPV), phimosis, and balanitis due to their location of the glans
penis and coronal sulcus which is covered by the foreskin (Morris, et al., 2011). There is evidence that
circumcised men may clear HPV more quickly and phimosis which is a congenital narrowing of the
foreskin opening, restriction impeding the passage of urine and the ability to clean under the foreskin
(Circumcision Academy of America, 2016). Phimosis almost exclusively occurs in uncircumcised men
(Morris, et al., 2011) and increases the risk of penile cancer 12 fold (Circumcision Academy of

Fire Hydrant Research Paper
The usage of fire hydrants has been an essential part of fire extinguishing in the United States. Before
the creation of the fire hydrant, fire plugs and bucket brigades were used to access water. The word
hydrant appeared for the first time in connection with Philadelphia s municipal water system. The
initial use of the hydrant was used for both firefighting and a source of sanitary water for the
community (Wohleber, 2002). Fire hydrants can be found in various of places that allows fire fighters
to access water when needed. Over the years, it has provided active protection and local water supply
to the community. A fire hydrant allows for quick access to water and is an important device for
fighting dangerous fires. It was believed that Frederick Graff, Chief Engineer of the Philadelphia
Water Works, invented the pillar type cast fire hydrant in 1801. ... Show more content on

The initial creation of the fire hydrant was very different than what we think of it today. It started off
with having to use buckets of water to using a hand pumping system to fire hydrants storing water
underground. As of today, there are over 6 million fire hydrants located across the United States and
are easily located with different markings. The purpose of this creation was it allowed for a safe and
active fire protection measure and a source for water storage. When responding to a fire emergency,
fire hydrants are useful in situations when there is a lack of supply for water. To prevent the misuse of
the hydrant, it requires special tools to be opened, such as a pentagonal wrench to remove the valve
that covers the hydrant (Jones, 2009). Fire trucks are unable to carry big tanks that hold all the water
and so having these devices located in the community enables them to have access to all the water
they need. Hydrants are designed to allow about 250 gallons of water to flow through the hydrants per

Avoidance Strategies In The Workplace
On the other hand, avoidance strategies are also often adopted as a coping mechanism for bullying. As
Anderson, Labriola, Andersen, Lund, and Hansen (2015) reported victims of bullying remain passive
and seldom ask for help therefore avoidance plays a pivotal role in depression. Depression via
bullying and avoidance coping strategies is reflected in absenteeism levels in the workplace
(McTernan et al., 2013) The study by Ortega et al. (2011) found that the risk of long term absence was
higher for those exposed to bullying than for those not bullied. Victims of workplace bullying may
adopt an avoidance strategy as a coping mechanism to escape the bully, by not attending work they
avoid being bullied (Casimir et al., 2012). An avoidance strategy ... Show more content on

Workplace bullying is a negative event and the interplay between such behaviour and the
environment, namely negative and positive reinforcement, and negative and positive punishment,
contributes to the development of depression (Kanter et al., 2008). The use of learned helplessness as
an avoidance strategy is a further learning theory that reinforces behaviour by providing negative
reinforcement which exacerbates and maintains depression (Cribb et al., 2006). Furthermore, using
avoidance strategies such as absenteeism instead of coping with the event may cause victims to
complain to others to receive sympathy and this positive reinforcement again exacerbates and
maintains depression (Ramnero et al., 2016). Social observational learning further contributes to
developing low self esteem and inadequate social skills which are risk factors of depression (Andersen
et al., 2015), In addition, social observation learning through vicarious learning is a risk factor to
developing depressive symptoms as witnessing hostile events may induce strong emotional responses
(Bandura Richard, 1977). Rumination, as an adjunct behaviour in depression positively reinforces
behaviour and predicts the length and severity of depression (Kanter et al., 2008). In sum, this paper
has discussed how types of operant learning theories and social observational learning may explain
how depression develops as a consequence of experiencing workplace bullying. As reported by
Ramnero et al. (2016) implications of considering a learning theory approach to depression includes
the development of clinical treatment strategies that understand the antecedents and consequences of
behaviour as well as the biological and cognitive

Causes Of Power Corrupts
The Power Magnet
Award winning author David Brin once stated, It is said that power corrupts, but actually it s more true
that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power. In a
perfect world there would be no corruption or lust for power; however, humans are not perfect,
therefore, mistakes are made and many crave money, pleasures, and power causing them to lose sight
of what truly matter. Throughout the history of our existence, there have been instances of corruption
for various reasons. Some cases include the terror of Maximilien Robespierre amid revolutionary
France, the recent American Olympic scandal at the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics, and the ascension
of the narcissistic rapper Kanye West.
While corruption isn t always the reason for gaining power, it can become the reason why certain
actions are taken to maintain that new power. Initially, Maximilien Robespierre was a French
revolutionary who supported the people despite being a bourgeoisie, commonly seen as an enemy of
the oppressed. Once the revolution gained control of the French monarchy, Robespierre let his greed
and ambition take hold of him. He devised the plan to behead former King Louis XVI in order to
assure the success of the revolution. Robespierre let this new power overcome him resulting in the
shelving of the Constitution so he could pursue the elimination of all suspects against the Republic,
allowing him to legally capture and kill almost anyone.

Women And Representations Of Women
The lives and representations of women in the Florentine Renaissance
In Biblical imaginary, the image of woman often originated from the image of Eve. Eve was allured
by the devil and impelled Adam to disobey God and eat the forbidden fruit, resulting in their exclusion
from the paradise, mortality and hardship in their lives living on Earth. Since then, the female
descendants of Eve were held responsible for this loss of paradise.
During the Renaissance era, women were oppressed by men because of the fault of Eve, and that they
have to be punished for that. This repression was mostly caused by religion, which imposed conditions
that were almost impossible to fulfil for both men and women. This essay focuses on different
representations of women through different artistic genres, comparing the women visually represented
with the women who actually lived at that time.
Before going into examination of representations, it is indispensable to discuss how gender roles were
constructed in Italy during the Renaissance period. The fulfilment of a woman s role was, on the most
basic level, marriage.
Girls after sexual maturity, between the ages of fifteen and eighteen, were in fact either rushed into
marriage or, if considered unmarriageable which means that her family could not find an
advantageous spouse they were made nuns and secluded within a convent, in order to avoid scandals
and to protect the family s reputation.
Not just before but also after marriage, women of

Introduction:
The aim of this literature review is to determine why set of structured points or methodology for the
management of coarse fisheries of lakes and rivers within the UK, is the best way forward to achieve a
good ecological status of surface water bodies in the UK. The following critical literature review will
attempt to explain why achieving a good ecological status is necessary, what it is and why being
applied to fisheries with UK is the most practical approach, the themes examined will be:
1. Fisheries within the UK and their significance
2. Good ecological status as per legislation requirements and for socio economic and cultural benefits.

Other uses involve fisheries for harvesting of fish, such as salmon farms. In 1994 there were an
estimated 0.8 million game anglers and 2.3 million coarse anglers. (Peirson, Tingley, Spurgeon,
Radford, 2001, p.416). Annual expenditure on all items related to angling/fishing involved the
purchasing of rod licences from the Environment Agency, tackle, bait, and permits on private lakes as
well as travel by anglers, in 1994, the total was estimated to be approximately £3 Billion (Moon and
Souter, 1994). By 2005 approximately thirty million days were fished by anglers on UK fisheries
which was substantially more than the year 2000 (Mawle, Peirson, 2009, p.44.) This increase in
angling activity increases competition between fisheries to ensure that the best quality stocks of fish
are available for anglers.
It is estimated by (Girdler, Wellby, Welcomme, 2010, p.3) that approximately 90% of the still water
bodies in the UK may be privately owned and marketed or operated as fisheries. Whilst running as a
privately owned fishery this could mean the fishery ends up removed from the direct influence of
significant regulating bodies such as conservation, freshwater scientists and regulators like the
Environment Agency, thus emphasising the role that fishery managers must independently regulate the
aquatic environment of their freshwater body. One of the main reasons as to why it is so significant to

Violating Its Investment Treaty Obligations
In order to satisfy the necessity requirements, the responding government must demonstrate that
violating its investment treaty obligations is the only way for the State to safeguard an essential
interest against a grave and imminent peril. Moreover, the breach must not seriously impair an
essential interest of the State towards which the obligations exists . In LG E, the tribunal determined
that economic, financial or those interests related to the protection of the State against any danger
seriously compromising its internal or external situation, are also considered essential interests. The
tribunal in Enron, on the other hand, acknowledged the severity of the crisis but held that it had not
compromised the existence of the State.
The next requirement of necessity as a defence is the only means standard. That is, if other measures
could lead to the same result, even if they would be more difficult or expensive, those alternative
measures should be pursued. In CMS, EDF, Suez and Sempra, the tribunals found that human rights
were relevant but the necessity defence was because it failed the only means requirement because the
government had other options available. This stringent and literal view of only means would seem to
preclude the use of the defence as there is almost always an alternative.
There have been tribunals that have taken a more liberal interpretation of the requirements. The first

I have always been intrigued with the Mona Lisa, I don t know why but there is something about her

the reason why I can look at this painting with great joy, it doesn t make me think too much, it doesn t

You can see that the painting seems to be made up of three triangles. Mona Lisa being the biggest then
the left top corner is the background and the top right corner, a continuation of the background. From
what we ve read he designed this painting in an upright triangular composition. However, these two
backgrounds seem to not be part of the same landscape. The left top corner seems more shaded, and
darker. Also the winding road I feel might symbolize troublesomeness, or decisions. Where as, the
right top side of the background is a little lighter in color and the path seems clear and straight. By
positioning the Mona Lisa the way Leonardo did creates balance within the painting. He also did a
wonderful job on the symmetry of her face and of the painting, between the objects in the painting and
the color used its self.
You can see that when viewing a painting like this there are many questions that arise in your mind.
Looking at the Mona Lisa I get drawn in and a sense of wonderment comes over me. I start to imagine
the person in the painting and what her smile was really about. A strong, confident women is what I
think she was, and that was brought out beautifully by de Vinci. I also think that the way he painted
the Mona Lisa shows a lot about what and how Leonardo viewed women. Many say that it was

Greenroot Activism
Public policy and civil rights movements are one of the most talked about subjects to date, many
different actions were taken to bring better rights for those who didn t have any. With the emergence
of activist organizations, they gave black minorities motivations to defend their own civil rights. Many
activist organizations such as: NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People)

Jumonville Glen. This helped to make the French and Indian war. In the following year Washington
joined Major General Edward Braddock on his march to Fort Duquesne. Following the British failure
to capture Fort Duquesne in 1754, British men assigned General Edward Braddock the task of going
to the Forks of Ohio and removing the French from the region. Joining Braddock on the expedition
was Washington. Washington played an important role in saving Braddock s army from death during
the French and Indian War. This restored Washington s reputation as a good leader after his defeat at
Fort Necessity. The march to Fort Duquesne was slow and Braddock left about one third of his force
to bring the supply train, while pressing on through forest country with perhaps 1,500 men. They
found rude messages left by the French on the trees that were stripped bare of bark. On July 9th, after
crossing the Monongahela River ten miles from Fort Duquesne, Braddock s army was proceeding
through the trees then was surprised by an enemy force close to 900 men. ... Show more content on

The Battle of Monongahela lasted several hours and witnessed the near destruction of Braddock s
army. Braddock realized retreat was his only option and made orders to that effect. Moments later, a
bullet struck Braddock s right arm and pierced his lung. When Braddock was lying on the ground he
made Washington to effectively carry out Braddock s orders and make the

Good Bye Lenin Symbolism
Within the film, Good Bye, Lenin!, the transition from a Socialist society to a post Socialist nation can
be seen in the film s utilization of symbolism. Symbolism used within the film can be understood as
reflective of the actual lives of German citizens, and from this imagery, the transition to post
Socialism can be analyzed as bittersweet. Good Bye, Lenin! portrayed the conditioning of Socialist
citizens by politicians, the citizens reliance on governmental support, the westernization of East
Germany, and the gendered roles of men and women within society. Within the film s symbolic
imagery, these portrayals further resonate the bittersweet transition of Germany s society and the
reality of its citizens. It is from these various depictions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
by Alex, the film s main character. The transition is best described by Alex when he expresses his
childhood interest in the cosmonaut, Sigmund Jahn. Within the film, as Alex verbally details his
childhood interest in the cosmonaut s departure into space, a spaceship is visually seen leaving earth
for space. The departure of the spaceship from earth into space is reflective of East Germany s
transition from Socialism to post Socialism. This depiction of the cosmonaut is symbolic of how new
and foreign post Socialism was to East German citizens, as space was to Sigmund Jahn. More
importantly, the ascent into space by Jahn is also symbolic of the wanted achievements of Alex.
Furthermore, this example of symbolism allows for the interpretation of distinct feelings of those
experiencing the transition from Socialism to post Socialism may have felt to be acknowledged.
Within Socialist societies, dependency on the government to require resources and resolution upon
being given certain opportunities can be noted. During the transition to post Socialism, uncertainty of
what a society free of Socialism would consist of, and freedom to exhibit characteristics that were
condemned under Socialism can also be noted. In acknowledging the differences of feelings felt
within Germany s Socialist and post Socialist society, the transition s description as bittersweet can be

Passover In Jewish Culture
Passover is, without a doubt, one of the most sacred holidays in Jewish culture, and in this reflection
paper, I will take a look at the history of Passover and other important Jewish holy days, then I will go
over how attaining my first Passover affected me. The holy day, know as Passover, has its origins in
Exodus 12, which tells the story of how the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt by the Pharaoh who had
begone to fear them, because of how fast their numbers were increasing. So, after several years of
slavery and oppression, God made Himself known to a man named Moses. God instructs Moses to go
tell the Pharaoh to let God s people go free. The Pharaoh of course refuses. So, God strikes the people
of Egypt with ten different plagues. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this section of the paper, I would like to go over how Passover is celebrated today. For some Jews,
the celebrations last for seven or eight days. Many Jewish families clean their houses thoroughly
during this time to remove all traces of leaven. In many Jewish homes, the children can take part in a
special search for any leftover leaven. On the evening right before the Passover begins, Jews have a
special service called a Seder. Seder takes place over a meal with family and friends in the home. The
Seder plate is made up of a lamb shank, a roasted egg, a green vegetable to dip in salt water, some
bitter herbs and horseradish, and a paste of chopped apples, walnuts, and

When speaking to a crowd of her supporters a couple of men in the crowd began to chant a variety of demeaning phrases at the former secretary of state. The turmoil s that have shaken the country make it plausible to believe that by some metaphysical law, Nicaraguan politics have accommodated to nature s tantrums. Like its diverse, rugged and seismically active geology, the country s politics have been irregular, impulsive and often explosive (Pastor, 15). There was much speculation regarding the potential outcome of the election especially regarding the possible social upheavals that could have resulted in yet another Civil War. The National Vote Counting Center was not announcing results until every electoral ballot had been counted, but quick counts conducted by both sides of the opposition as well as by the representatives of the monitoring international organizations hinted at the possible victory of UNO. As a result the concern had shifted as to how to ensure a smooth transition while preventing any possible social upheavals. Daniel Ortega expressed his concern to Carter in meeting that took place the night the polls were closed: I wanted to talk to you about what could be an eventual triumph of UNO, and take steps to ensure that if this occurred, it would not produce a bad outcome. There is a section within UNO who would be so encouraged by a UNO victory that they might want to provoke acts of violence against the FSLN.... There could be a civil war. The conduct of the U.S. government would be decisive (Pastor, 261). Due to the cooperation of the opposition party s especially in calming and controlling their supporters, the announcement of the UNO victory did not result in any social repercussions and hence helped Nicaragua serve as an exemplary model to the international community proving that peaceful transition is in fact possible. It stood above layers of humanity in that complex, liveliness indicated by the lights shining through the different curtains and blinds covering most of the windows of the complex. The figure stepped closer to the edge, its head turned to Teresa Sandoval. The silhouette reminded her of a woman: the harsh wind pulled back its hair and a sheet cascaded down the building. The smell of red wine and smoke stung her eyes. Teresa stood underneath the one working streetlight on the entire street: all the other lights flickered. She leaned against the pole, her burning eyes still fixed on the shadow as it halted right up to the ledge. She glanced quickly at the pavement in front of her then right up to the figure. The moon shone brightly behind the figure, long black hair illuminated. As it walked closer, the lights behind the windows at the feet of the figure were killed. He uses his employment as a means of escaping social conventions through his monotonous statement I would prefer not (Melville 1998, p. 198), living a life of choice and preference in a world where preference is non existent. Bartleby represents a new form of humanity where an individual has the right to choice rather than living a life of routine through social constraints, defying all forms of society s restrictions in order to reveal his true desires. Chekhov explores this concept of conflict through Anna and Gurov s relationship in The Lady with the Dog as he reveals a need to defy social restraints in order to escape their marriages as this restricts them from fully embracing their desires. The image of the long grey fence adorned with nails (Chekhov 1998, p. 371), symbolises the confines of marriage keeping them apart, unable to be free from social restraint. Creating an air of seclusion and limitations, this depiction appears to be fending off Gurov, producing a feeling of entrapment and isolation as it separates their love. The image of an old woman, a beggar and a dog walking in and out of the fence freely further emphasises this lack of freedom they have in their lives; the portrayal of a beggar being the most illuminating aspect of this passage. However, for jeans there was no difference in perception between the two countries. One might generalize that the more technical the product, the less positive is the perception of one manufactured in a less developed or newly industrializing country. Analysis Of Paris Is Burning COMPARISON OF PARIS IS BURNING AND HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE Ava Morrow History 3220 The United States in the 20th Century November 13, 2017 Beginning in the mid 1980 s, a number of efforts were initiated to bring awareness and enlightenment to the actual tragedy of AIDS. Two films that evolved out of these awareness campaigns were the documentaries Paris Is Burning and How to Survive a Plague . Both films, although in significantly diverse ways, provide a window into the alternative lifestyles of LGBT people of the times and the problems and issues they faced. A comparison of these two documentaries demonstrates the initial fears of the public and affected people and the beginnings of acceptance or at least tolerance of these alternative lifestyles. The movie Paris Is Burning is a documentary film exploring race, gender, and sexuality within the African American and Latino gay and transgender communities of the ball culture of New York in the mid to late 1980 s. Ball culture is a term used to describe the underground sub culture of LGBT people who walk or compete for trophies in events known as balls. The film chronicles the ostentatiously arranged competitions in which participants, within a very specific theme, must walk while being judged on criteria such as the authenticity and beauty of their apparel and their dancing ability. Much of the film shows footage of actual balls interspersed with interviews of prominent members of this drag scene. The film shows people of different gender identities and their varied methods of expressing themselves while also exploring how they cope with racism, AIDS, poverty, and homophobia. How to Survive a Plague is a documentary movie which depicts the early years of the AIDS epidemic and the efforts of ACT UP and other groups. ACT UP, founded in March 1987, is an advocacy group which supports legislation and medical research and treatment of AIDS victims. However, there are many medical benefits that have medical evidence to support. Male circumcision is the removal of some or all of the foreskin covering the head of the penis (Circumcision Academy of America, 2016). This procedure is one of the most common medical procedures performed on male infants in the United States, typically occurring after 24 hours of life, and almost always done within 10 days. Before the creation of the fire hydrant, fire plugs and bucket brigades were used to access water. The word hydrant appeared for the first time in connection with Philadelphia s municipal water system. The initial use of the hydrant was used for both firefighting and a source of sanitary water for the community (Wohleber, 2002). Fire hydrants can be found in various of places that allows fire fighters to access water when needed. Over the years, it has provided active protection and local water supply to the community. As Anderson, Labriola, Andersen, Lund, and Hansen (2015) reported victims of bullying remain passive and seldom ask for help therefore avoidance plays a pivotal role in depression. Depression via bullying and avoidance coping strategies is reflected in absenteeism levels in the workplace (McTernan et al., 2013) The study by Ortega et al. Workplace bullying is a negative event and the interplay between such behaviour and the environment, namely negative and positive reinforcement, and negative and positive punishment, contributes to the development of depression (Kanter et al., 2008). The use of learned helplessness as an avoidance strategy is a further learning theory that reinforces behaviour by providing negative reinforcement which exacerbates and maintains depression (Cribb et al., 2006). Furthermore, using avoidance strategies such as absenteeism instead of coping with the event may cause victims to complain to others to receive sympathy and this positive reinforcement again exacerbates and maintains depression (Ramnero et al., 2016). Social observational learning further contributes to developing low self esteem and inadequate social skills which are risk factors of depression (Andersen et al., 2015), In addition, social observation learning through vicarious learning is a risk factor to developing depressive symptoms as witnessing hostile events may induce strong emotional responses (Bandura Richard, 1977). Rumination, as an adjunct behaviour in depression positively reinforces behaviour and predicts the length and severity of depression (Kanter et al., 2008). In sum, this paper has discussed how types of operant learning theories and social observational learning may explain how depression develops as a consequence of experiencing workplace bullying. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power. In a perfect world there would be no corruption or lust for power; however, humans are not perfect, therefore, mistakes are made and many crave money, pleasures, and power causing them to lose sight of what truly matter. Throughout the history of our existence, there have been instances of corruption for various reasons. Some cases include the terror of Maximilien Robespierre amid revolutionary France, the recent American Olympic scandal at the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics, and the ascension of the narcissistic rapper Kanye West. While corruption isn t always the reason for gaining power, it can become the reason why certain actions are taken to maintain that new power. Initially, Maximilien Robespierre was a French revolutionary who supported the people despite being a bourgeoisie, commonly seen as an enemy of the oppressed. Once the revolution gained control of the French monarchy, Robespierre let his greed and ambition take hold of him. He devised the plan to behead former King Louis XVI in order to assure the success of the revolution. • 31. Women And Representations Of Women The lives and representations of women in the Florentine Renaissance In Biblical imaginary, the image of woman often originated from the image of Eve. Eve was allured by the devil and impelled Adam to disobey God and eat the forbidden fruit, resulting in their exclusion from the paradise, mortality and hardship in their lives living on Earth. Since then, the female descendants of Eve were held responsible for this loss of paradise. During the Renaissance era, women were oppressed by men because of the fault of Eve, and that they have to be punished for that. This repression was mostly caused by religion, which imposed conditions that were almost impossible to fulfil for both men and women. This essay focuses on different representations of women through different artistic genres, comparing the women visually represented with the women who actually lived at that time. Before going into examination of representations, it is indispensable to discuss how gender roles were constructed in Italy during the Renaissance period. The fulfilment of a woman s role was, on the most basic level, marriage. Girls after sexual maturity, between the ages of fifteen and eighteen, were in fact either rushed into marriage or, if considered unmarriageable which means that her family could not find an advantageous spouse they were made nuns and secluded within a convent, in order to avoid scandals and to protect the family s reputation. In 1994 there were an estimated 0.8 million game anglers and 2.3 million coarse anglers. (Peirson, Tingley, Spurgeon, Radford, 2001, p.416). Annual expenditure on all items related to angling/fishing involved the purchasing of rod licences from the Environment Agency, tackle, bait, and permits on private lakes as well as travel by anglers, in 1994, the total was estimated to be approximately £3 Billion (Moon and Souter, 1994). By 2005 approximately thirty million days were fished by anglers on UK fisheries which was substantially more than the year 2000 (Mawle, Peirson, 2009, p.44.) This increase in angling activity increases competition between fisheries to ensure that the best quality stocks of fish are available for anglers. In LG E, the tribunal determined that economic, financial or those interests related to the protection of the State against any danger seriously compromising its internal or external situation, are also considered essential interests.
