Literature Review
The problem my group decided to address is violence against women. Violence against women can be
defined as a pattern of abusive, violent or coercive behaviors. These behaviors are used against the
victim in an intimate relationship to control their thoughts, beliefs or behaviors. The abuser uses
violence to hold power and dominance over the victim of violence. Not only do they physically violate
the victim, they also isolate the individual from her support system, making it tougher for her to
receive help and leave the horrific situation. This is a prevalent issue in America that does not receive
the attention it deserves. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, every nine
seconds a woman in the United States is being assaulted, that equivalates to one in every three woman
have been a victim of some form of violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. According to
Evaluating the Effect of a Specialized MSW Course on Violence Against Women, it is evident that
rates of violence against women occur at astonishing rates in the United States. A national survey s
results exemplify these rates, the results indicated that 52% of women were physically assaulted as a
child by an adult caretaker or as an adult by any type of perpetrator; 18% experienced a completed or
attempted rape at some point in their lives; and 8% reported being stalked at some point in their lives
(McMahon, Postmus, Warrener, Plummer Schwartz, 2013). Women who

Consider for a second your childhood memories. Maybe you thought of freedom, of exploration and
independent play. For many children today, the most memorable moments of their youth will not be
any of these; for many children today, they will remember the child harness; a leash attached to a child
s backpack that restricts a child s mobility to their parents . It s a growing trend, popular with busy,
metropolitan parents that, as a father, I find worrying. Why would a parent be so demeaning,
neglecting and restrictive to their children?

Not only I, but the boy himself knew that in wearing a leash, he was being likened to, and treated as, a
pet: Less than human. To limit a child s movement in such a way is limiting their freedom; a born
entitlement. Taking away this right puts the child below a person;
To demean and dehumanise a child with such an accessory is wrong.
This is a contentious point, but nonetheless, the parent is neglecting their child in constricting them as
opposed to educating them in discipline and boundaries, a critical point once the child ages beyond the
leash. Parents are expected to be able to chase down their more excitable children and educate them
on the dangers of running off. Doing so keeps the child from trying to run off and the child would gain
responsibility. In contrast, if a parent attached a leash to the child, if they were to run, all that would be
required is to pull them back as if nothing had happened. Yes, perhaps at the time the leashed child is
safe, but I fear for the child who is one day taken off the leash and does not know how to act

When Victoria s Secret is allowed to have models prance around on screen but Lane Bryant Ads
(lingerie for plus size women) is banned then there s a problem. The media is portraying these models
who are thin to the point where it is unhealthy. And the media is feeding society lies. A perfect
example is of Gerran Tyler. Tyler was a 12 year old supermodel. She walks the run way for clients like
Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein, and Betsey Johnson. She s tall, thin, the perfect model because she hasn t
