Operating Room Observation Experience This past week, I was able to observe a right hip fracture
repair. The patient had broken his hip and was undergoing surgery to place screws and plates into his
hip. I was able to see the whole process through the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative
stages. The preoperative stage is when the patient comes to the OR and is being prepped for the
surgery. The patient is verified by the nurse, who needs to check patient identification, patient records
and make sure is calm for the surgery. Before this particular surgery, the anesthesiologist came down
before the surgery to administer a block to the patient. The block is to dull the nerve ending so when
the patients comes out of surgery he will be in less pain. The consent form is signed by two people, the

because its the only one I ve completed and in another part due to the incredibly complex subject
matter. Response four asks us to pick apart the characteristics K.Dover attributes to homosexuality in

Throughout Whale Rider Paikea is expected to listen to what her grandpa tells her to do and say.
Personally, Paikea feels conflicted and under pressure to stick to her grandpas rules, as she wants to go
her own way. Her grandpa finds it hard to see Paikea as her own person and can t accept modernity,
which he is not used to. He also stops her from learning the ways of a Maori chief, which is something
she still tries to do in secret with the help of the rest of her family. Koro sometimes fails to see what
Paikea can do, as he feels very strongly about old traditions, but other times he sees what she can do
and fails to appreciate it. Paikea just wants to be loved and accepted by her grandfather and her strong
sense of leadership and determination to get that from him leaves her as a role model to others to be
brave and to never stop until they get what they want.
Koro feels the need to stick to old traditions and rules but is not willing to try new things and to
change. Change is something that is new for Koro, as he has been so used to doing the same thing all
his life, but Paikea and what she does challenges Koro to get outside his comfort zone. Koro has been
used to and believes in a traditional and patriarchal society with everyone in their particular place.
This is why when Paikea starts to show the true qualities of a chief, and in his words Doesn t obtain to
her role, he is blinded and ignores them as he is so focused on what he is used to. While Paikea is
asking Koro about her ancestors, Koro says Each one of those threads, is one of your ancestors, all
joined together and strong. But then the rope breaks, which symbolises either a wave of change
coming through or old traditions being broken and new ones being started, either way, Paikea will be
the one to put the rope back together again, as in that scene she fixes the rope to get the engine started.
Paikea is trying to learn the ways of a leader and a chief but Koro keeps shutting her off and getting
mad whenever she does. He would always say, She is no good to me. Even when Paikea is learning to
