Continuities In The Commerce Of The Indian Ocean
From 650 CE to 1750 CE, there were many changes and continuities in the commerce of the Indian
Ocean region. One major continuity in the commerce of the Indian Ocean was the emergence and use
of the same trade routes for both imports and exports of goods such as gold and ivory. One major
change was how the commerce of the Indian Ocean prospered economically. The commerce of the
Indian Ocean developed rapidly, and the trade incorporated places such as East Africa, the Persian
Gulf, Red Sea and India. Another major change was the increased involvement of the Europeans in the
Indian Ocean commerce shortly after discovering it.
One major continuity in the commerce of the Indian Ocean was the continued use of the same trade
routes and ports in the Indian Ocean for imports and exports. Trading ports in East Africa served as a
method of transporting goods from Africa. The goods being traded was another continuity. Gold,
ivory, and iron were constantly being exported from Africa due to their profitable values. These items
could be sold at a profit because they were scarce in Asian countries. Another continuity was the
tradition in the use of monsoon winds to help travel. The Indian Ocean trade was made easier by the
monsoon winds that circulated between Asia and the Eastern coast which reduced travel times, and
produced favorable wind currents.
However, there were also many changes in the commerce of the Indian Ocean. The commerce of the
Indian Ocean changed the eastern coast of

The Influence of the US and USSR in the...
During the period following World War 2.The new Zionist movement of Jews immigrating to the
Middle East to establish a homeland for all Jews in what was now Israel after being displaced for
many years. This led to conflict between the Arabs and the Jews about who had rights to this
homeland, with both the Arab Muslims and the Jewish Israelis having biblical claims to the cities in
the Middle East. This conflict was further fuelled by both the USA and the USSR as they were trying
to spread their sphere of influence by supplying aid in the form of weapons, ammunition and support
to gain access to valuable resources and water ways. However their involvement was not a direct
factor leading to the conflict between Israel and the Arab states but rather prolonging it by supplying
tools of war.
To begin with the USA had strong interests in the Middle East due to its resource rich lands and
strategic importance in the world and would secure these aims by aligning themselves with Israel to
land a foothold in the Middle East. The USA had strong interests in the Middle East for two main
reasons the first being oil. The USA has always put its sources of oil on a priority. So when the Middle
East became unstable the USA s first goal was to secure its source of oil. Secondly was the strategic
location of Middle East being the link between three continents and home to the Suez Canal a vital
shipping route from the Mediterranean to the Red sea. The USA also wanted to solidify the capitalist

The Apache Indians Essay
The Apaches, like most Native Americans, have no written history other than that written by white
men. But the story of the Apaches did not begin in the American Southwest but in the northwestern
corner of North America, the western Subarctic region of Alaska and Canada. The Apache Indians
belong to the southern branch of the Athabascan group, whose languages constitute a large family,
with speakers in Alaska, western Canada, and American Southwest. The fact that the Apaches
originated in the western mountainous Subarctic region makes their nomadic behavior after the arrival
in the American Southwest more comprehensible; the tribes of the Southwest were highly mobile and
moved from place to place depending on availability of food. They ... Show more content on

Raiding had been something to Apache had only done once in awhile but now that they couldn t hunt
buffalo any longer raiding became necessary for their survival. The hostility between the Apache and
the Spanish settlers increased when New Mexico became a Spanish Colony . From the time of the
Spanish colonization until 1886 they were noted for their warlike disposition. According to the written
history of whites, Apaches have always been hostile; in truth, serious warlike behavior could usually
be attributed to belligerent behavior on the part of the whiteman, or misunderstandings between the
two peoples.
Since no single food source could support their people for any length of time the Athabaskan
continued to move around. Because they were accustomed to living in mountainous regions their
migration southward followed the Rocky Mountain range until they eventually reached the
Southwestern us, probably in the 1500 s. The reason for all this southward trek is not so clear but is
most likely because of lack of game and food. During the migration they broke into smaller bands that
settled in various areas of the country. Those that landed in what are now the states of Colorado, New
Mexico, Arizona, and Utah adopted some of the culture of the Pueblo Indians and eventually came to
be known as Navajos; others, who became the Western

Weber s Theory Of Authority
The purpose of this essay is to analyse Weber s theory of authority and power in order to establish its
role in the modern contemporary world today. Weber, in his most acclaimed writings, discusses his
three ideal types of authority being outlined as traditional, charismatic and rational legal authority. He
believes that in order for any political leader or political establishment to hold legitimate authority
over its peoples, they must have either one of these types of authority. All of these types of power and
authority can be referred to in some way in today s contemporary world using examples of differing
political leaders and systems. However, Weber s writings were conducted in 1922 and may be
considered as out dated, and not as relevant as they were at his time of writing. Also, many dispute
that Weber s types of authority were perhaps not entirely relatable and Martin Spencer, like many
other critics of Weber s work in fact argue that there should have been four types of authority. Hence
why these issues must be discussed in order to conclude whether Weber s ideal types of authority are
representative of political leaders and governments, and whether or not they can be associated with the
contemporary world we live in today.
Max Weber introduced his three types of authority in an essay which was first published in 1922 in
German, and was later published in 1958 in English. Weber believes that many systems can consider
themselves as holding legitimate authority, yet

Homestead Lockout and Strike Essay
Homestead Lockout and Strike On the night of July 6, 1892, an event would take place that would
change American history forever. Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick were planning something
that no one would ever expect. The Amalgamated Association (The AA) attempted to renew their
contract, but because the majority of the employees were non union they decided to go with the
majority and make it non union. Carnegie did not want to be directly involved with the break of the
unions, so he brought in Frick to be in charge of the plant. His plans were to lockout the workers and
bring in workers who would do what he wanted them to do with increased hours and less pay. Frick
built a fifteen foot barbed wire fence around the plant to keep ... Show more content on

They were not willing to make any concessions. They wanted them to continue with the long hours as
mandated by them. If the workers didn t agree to these terms they would be fired. Employers knew
that people needed jobs and were not concerned about filling vacant positions. In today s age, if you re
working that many hours we believe that we should get paid for what we worked. They felt they same
way, but because of the union they didn t receive those rights. Some consequences of the strike were
longer workdays. Days went from eight hour shifts to twelve hour shifts, six days a week. Wages were
cut; all employees were working with a mandatory increase of hours and not making what they should
have been making. People were not able to provide for their families. Conditions would continue this
way until the steel industry unionized, but that would not be for about another forty four years later.
Because of the way the economy is today, unfortunately history seems to be repeating itself. There
seems to be a big push to get the unions out of the work force again. Businesses cannot afford the hirer
wages, benefits and security that unions afford. Businesses are being forced to downsize resulting in
the layoff of workers. Cutting medical benefits and hiring more employees but only for part time
positions, to keep costs down. Employees are

The Importance Of Human Relations
Summary What is human relations? The term human relations is defined as the interactions among
people. Human relations are important to me as well as many others because it is a skill you need to
master to be able to work well with others and build lasting relationships. Whether it be working with
other employees from a different cultural background or learning how to maintain a good relationship
with your boss, mentor, or leader, having good human relation skills will help you succeed in not only
your personal life but your professional life as well. Human relation skills are important to
organizations because the skills learned play a major role in what makes an organization succeed.
Workplace relations directly affect work performance and employees must work together through
what is defined as teamwork (working together to achieve something beyond the capabilities of
individuals working alone) to accomplish the organizations overall goal. An organizations overall goal
should entitle the goal of human relations, which is to create a win win situation by satisfying
employee needs while achieving organizational objectives. A. How would you describe yourself as a
person? I would describe myself as an outgoing, ambitious, compassionate, and a creative person with
an intuitive mind. I am goal oriented, and I aspire to be successful in everything that I do by working
hard and accomplishing many tasks. I empathize with others, but I like to take control of a situation if

On My Dear Grandchild Simon Bradstreet
On My Dear Grandchild Simon Bradstreet, Who Died on 16 November 1669, being but a Month, and
One Day Old, is about the death of poet Anne Bradstreet s grandchild. She personifies God as a
gardener whom harvests the grandson Simon and his two sisters. She seems to find ways to
understand the situation and remain true to her faith. The internal conflict in Bradstreet s poem is to
retain her trust and faith while accepting the tragedy of her grandchild. Bradstreet struggles with the
loss of her faith in God by hiding her feelings but she eventually accepts the loss the loved ones as
being a part of God s plan. Bradstreet uses the term cropped to explain how God plants us a seed but

A Report On A Formal Report
A formal report provides information on a particular problem or subject and gives a recommended
course of action based on that information. Some of the different kinds of reports are feasibility
studies, research reports, position papers and problem reports. Each type of report has its own set of
requirements for effectiveness, but they have a lot of common elements which will be discussed in this
paper.
In addition to the components that make up a report, writing a report requires a technique or process
that ensures the proper research is accomplished and the right data is included. Some people use
checklists while others use a set of questions to ensure all the bases are covered. I will touch on the
procedure for writing a report after the components section.
Components of Formal Reports: Front matter, body and end matter are the major components of most
formal reports. Each major component is made up of several subsections which can be removed or
added as needed.
Front Matter: The front matter precedes the text (Lannon Guark, 2014 p. 533) or, body of the report,
its purpose is to introduce and summarize the report and contains the following elements;
A letter that introduces the report (transmittal letter) to the person or group that asked for it. The letter
may list the reason for the report, point out specific items of interest in the report, describe problems
with the data or thank people that contributed to the research.

course of the Vietnam War there were four attacks on the US Embassy of South Vietnam. The first
incident occurred on March 30, 1965, when the Vietcong detonated a car bomb outside the embassy.
The car contained roughly three hundred pounds of explosives. The explosion killed two Americans,
one of whom was a female CIA employee. In addition to the two dead Americans, nineteen
Vietnamese and one Filipino who were serving in the U.S. Navy. One hundred and eighty three others

Alice Munro s The Amber Of The Moment
Here we are, trapped in the amber of the moment. There is no why (Vonnegut 76 77). There are
notable depictions of a sense of entrapment among protagonists in works such as Alice Munro s
Dimension and Train. In these short stories, the central characters, Doree and Jackson suffer from a
sensation of feeling trapped, due to their life experiences, which ultimately leads them becoming
motivated to go onto the next chapter of their lives. There are overlapping themes and writing styles in
each story, therefore accentuating the similarities between the experiences of Doree and Jackson, and
bring the two stories closely together, evoking strong emotions and pathos within the reader.
Thematically, Munro shows parallel ones in both Dimension and Train, with the most prominent ones
being isolation, and relationships with family members and its affiliation with sexuality and gender.
Munro s writing style rings identical in both stories as well, as each one incorporates the use of
flashbacks, once again implementing a way to compare the characters, as the flashbacks provide
explanations for being emotionally confined. Lastly, a prominent technique used is the way in which
each story ends abruptly, stimulating a response in the reader of wanting more to the story, as the
endings both foreshadow a start to a new life, although Doree breaks free whereas Jackson seemingly
follows his cycle as a result from feeling trapped. Isolation is a theme that is largely present in both

in the availability and use of social networking sites. Dictionary.com describes the term social
networking as an online community of people with a common interest who use a website or other
technologies to communicate with each other and share information, resources, etc. and, within the
last 10/15 years, there have been significant developments in technology making these online
communities even easier to access. During the late 90 s and early 2000s, there was limited
interactivity on computers and internet speeds; this is what s known as Web 1.0. In 1995, Clifford
Stoll wrote an article for Newsweek titled The Internet? Bah! Hype alert: Why cyberspace isn t, and

What Is The Similarities Between Arcite And Plamon
Arcite and Palamon, friends and foes, both fighting for the hand of the same woman. Love, true love,
is that not one of the most popular themes in any type of media? The most common portrayal of love
is a forbidden love, but after that is rivaled love. Two people fighting for the love of a single person. In
The Knight s Tale, Chaucer gives us this exact same theme. Arcite and Palamon, cousins, both
attempting to earn the hand of the beautiful Emily. When looking closer at them, we can see some
distinct differences between them but also some concealed resemblances. The most major differences
are the way the view Emily and who they turn to when they need help. Moreover, the most significant

In their first fight, Palamon had just escaped and Arcite had achieved a stable position in Emily s

could have killed him, but instead swore to Palamon that I shall not fail to be found here, on my faith
as a knight, and to bring quite enough armor for you. (Chaucer 753) They both returned and helped
each other into their armor, this is important because they both had the opportunity to sabotage the
other but they choose not to. When they are found fighting by Theseus, Palamon immediately insists
on being killed for his misdeeds, but also demands that Arcite be killed too. Palamon recognizes his
just penalty and does not argue against it. After Arcite is wounded during the tournament and he
becomes aware of his impending death, he calls Emily and Palamon to his side. After bemoaning his
fate, Arcite turns to Emily with these words: If you are ever to be a wife, forget not Palamon, the
gentle man. (Chaucer 1939) By the time Arcite dies, he and Palamon have no more quarrels between

Use Of Hydraulic Systems Used From Ancient Egypt
1. INTRODUCTION
___________________________________________________________________
1.1 Chronology of Hydraulics
A machine could be described as a device which reduces human effort. Machines consist of various
components which perform their intended operations to give the desired result. Engines, Vehicles,
computers etc are all examples of machines we come across in our daily lives. Hydraulic machines are
those devices which use the power of a liquid to perform simple work. These machines are based on
the principle of hydraulics which deals with the mechanical properties of liquids. Properties of fluids
provide the basis of hydraulics. A hydraulic press is one such device which is based on this principle.
The use of hydraulic systems can be traced to the regions of ancient Egypt, China and various other
regions where the principle of hydraulics was used for a variety of purposes but it was only in the
modern era that the concept of hydraulics was put to use for operating machinery and in the
development of hydraulic power networks. Numerous scientists like Blaise Pascal and Benedetto
Castelli contributed enormously in this regard.
1.2 The Science of Hydraulics
The term hydraulics is derived from the Greek words hydro (meaning water) and aulics (meaning
pipes). We come across hydraulic machines like cranes, forklifts etc in our day to day lives.
Aeroplanes and cars use the concept of hydraulics for carrying out certain operations. A hydraulic
system works on the

Overcrowding Prisons And The Prisons Essay

Overcrowding Prisons Prisons were essentially built to accommodate a number of prisoners, but over
the years, it has reached over capacity. Today in the United States, there are approximately 193,468
federal inmates that consist of the Bureau of Prisons Custody, private managed facilities and other
facilities. The inmates ages range from 18 65 with the median age being in their late 30 s. This number
is counting both male and female population with a male being 93.3% of inmates and females being
6.7%. The number of inmates has steadily increased since 1980 with only having approximately less
than 50,000 but today the number has gone more up. Drug offenses are the highest number of inmate s
imprisonment, the next higher offense would be weapons, explosives and arson; immigration and
miscellaneous fall next in lines. The number of the other offenses, such as robbery, extortion, fraud,
bribery, burglary, larceny, property offenses and other offenses are lower. Overcrowding prisons have
become problematic as the prisons population continues to increase, leading to proper care and
attention to prisoners.

How Did Rock N Roll Influence Pop Culture
Rough Draft For music to endure for centuries it has to have, in addition to wondrous sound, but an
image of its composer that electrifies for generations. Rock N Roll has it all, yet to understand it
deeply we must understand the fathers. Chuck Berry plunged his guitar into his amp and turned the
hairs of his audience electric. Elvis Presley, the heartthrob of the south would give Rock N Roll its
image for the next decade while America started to find out who it was and what their bleak future had
in store for them. Chuck Berry had a distinct sound that gave him an edge in finding his audience. He
began using the call and response with his volume pumped up guitar. He would evoke not just image
but raw skill where he can make his guitar do the singing for him while he s accompanied by his
backing band. Elvis Presley never did write many of his songs. Most were written by his bandmates
yet Elvis gave the music its charm and eventually its glorified time. He put Rock N Roll in the
spotlight of pop audiences and drew out audiences consisting of young teenage girls who adored his
good looks yet also bringing out the image of cool for boys to imitate. FINAL DRAFT ... Show more

Photography Has An Alternate Point Of View On Photography
Photography is commencing to wind up as the world s most popular pastime. Because photographs
surround us, we are able to utilize photography to explore the world. Susan Sontag, author of On
Photography, has an alternate point of view on photography. When Sontag implies that photography
lets us know how we think about the world, we acknowledge it as the camera records it; this is
essentially what photography is all about, but it involves the photographer s view utilizing a camera to
record both a physical reality and an internal reality. Sontag s claim that photography constrains our
comprehension of the world is a great observation; conversely, today s current photograph
manipulation makes it difficult to see what reality truly is. Photography is taking pictures. Following
its invention in the 1800s, the photographic picture and its consistent development have formed our
experience of reality. Regardless of the brilliant ascent of photography from an interest to a mass
medium over the previous century, there is something unspeakably, yet unquestionably diverse, about
visual society in the advanced age. The feel of simply unique and natural without a moment s delay
particular and profoundly established is at the embodiment of the photographic image itself. For
instance, the photograph by Nick Brandt, Wasteland with Elephant, shows the natural beauty of the
environment. Brandt epitomizes Sontag s assertion, Picture taking serves a high purpose: uncovering a

Theme Of Selfishness In All My Sons
People Are Selfish According to The Washington Post, 70% of the American population is classified
as being selfish. ( Americans are patriotic, honest, lazy, and selfish, according to Americans: The
Washington Post ) Selfishness is displayed in the play All My Sons, as there is much conflict centered
around one family relating to the ideas of marriage, death, and lying. In this play, the author, Arthur
Miller, reveals that most people really do not care about others, by showing that they are indeed
selfish, so they can look better than other people. This is portrayed by the character Joe Keller. Joe s
selfishness is shown through how he blames others, and tries to cover up his mistakes, rather than
owning up to them. This interpretation is important because it makes the reader think of how they act,
and if they would be that 70% of the American population that is considered selfish. First, Miller
illustrates how Joe acts selfish by depicting how he blames others. In the contents of the play, Joe
tends to blame Steve, his previous business partner, for the majority of his problems. Throughout the
play Steve is in jail because Joe blamed him for manufacturing, and distributing all of the defective
plane parts that eventually lead to the death of twenty one innocent pilots. Miller shows that Joe was
indeed responsible for the manufacturing of the defective plane parts and let Steve face the
repercussions of those actions. When Joe refers to himself by stating, . . .

Describe the Concept of Jit and Its Relationship to...
Just In Time (JIT) is a management philosophy which implements systems or processes which aims to
maximise return of investment by maximising production efficiency, improving product quality,
reducing manufacturing and logistical costs, and the elimination of waste. JIT, as the name implies,
also means bringing the right materials at the right place at the right time. Items must arrive as and
when they are needed, neither earlier nor later, but just in time . In its strictest sense, inventory is
considered a waste in JIT. In logistics, JIT aims to eliminate waste of all forms; be it time, resources or
materials.
Although the JIT concept has been applied loosely for years by various organisations, the JIT
philosophy we know today can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, the computers delivered were customized according to different customer requirements, without
compromising on quality. With JIT, production levels can be easily adjusted to meet demand.
Integrated supplier and distributor networks were instrumental in the success of Dell Computers.
Without these relationships, Dell would not have been able to support a 50+% growth rate for 3
consecutive years that lead to $12 billion in annual sales by 1997. (Fillard, Frahm, Mercer Scott, n.d.)
Although the JIT system managed to revolutionise numerous companies in the way they run their
logistics, it is not all a bed of roses for some companies. Since JIT does away with supply inventory,
companies are sometimes forced to be over dependent on their JIT suppliers. Sometimes they are at
their suppliers mercy. Examples of this can be found at Ford Motor Company and General Motors.
Ford faced a problem with one of its suppliers which forced them to shut down six plants which cost
them tens of millions of dollars. The supply company for General Motors had a strike, and supplies
could not be delivered. Two thirds of their plants had to shut down. This cost GM about $600 million
in profits in 1996. (Glenn, T. 2001)
For JIT to be efficiently implemented, it is vital for companies to have the right partner suppliers
which share the same JIT commitment and drive. Toyota

Worldview Is What You Think About The World
What is Worldview?
Worldview is what you see and think about the world. So it would depend on the person on what they
think about the world since everyone is different. It is what you believe of what you have heard and
would take it to heart of what you believe. For example in the book called Finding Your Worldview:
Thinking Christianly about the World, it gives an example of different color lens. When you give
others a different color lens each of them is going to be seeing it differently and that is how Worldview
works and it would impact your life when you would respond to issues in the world. A worldview
would feed off a person that would base every action, opinion and a response that they would see in
the world. So since the world is built around their life, they would share what they have seen and
experienced. People always wonder how life began or mankind comes into existence and it is hard for
someone to explain what you believe by just saying what you think is right. It tells and shows God
creating the heavens and the earth in the beginning. (Genesis 1:1). In the bible, God created the world
in six days and rested on the seventh day. (Genesis 2:1 3) Christians believe that God created us in His
own image. (Genesis 1:27) God made us to be like Him; of course we are not nearly perfect as God.
But we would have the ability to understand and learn and to obey what God has sent us down here
for. So it is believed in Christian worldview of how life began, that God

Deaf People Disability
Do Deaf people have a disability? What is the difference between Deaf and deaf ?
A disability can be defined as a limitation of function because of an impairment (Lane, 2008, p. 277).
To some, deaf people [seem] limited in some functions because of an impairment of hearing (Lane,
2008, p. 277). However, this determination of disability has arisen from norms and the technologies of
normalization (Lane, 2008, p. 279) by the hearing and otherwise able bodied world. To the hearing
world, Deaf people lack the ability to hear; a sense which so many of us hearing people depend on. In
actuality, the only reason Deaf people seem to suffer is because we, the hearing majority, have placed
our own beliefs and values on them. By labeling Deaf people as disabled, we are guilty of audism and
ableism, as we [insist] that inherent biological factors determine individual traits and capacity (Lane,
2008, p. 282), and assume their life is lacking because they either cannot hear or cannot hear as well
as we think they should. If we were to change our mentality about accessibility, about human rights,
and about individuality, it would seem clear that the only reason Deaf people are limited in any way is
because the majority makes so much revolve around the importance of hearing, and dismiss the reality

Best Practices Fo A New ERP System Implementation
Implementing A New ERP System Into The Enterprise:
Best Practices in Project and Change Management
Introduction
The most significant costs and risks a company can take are in re aligning its core business processes
and systems to allow for greater responsiveness to market opportunities and threats. Increasingly
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are being used as the unifying platform for all systems
throughout an enterprise. As a result, the project, implementation, training and support plans often
must be carefully devised and implemented across nontechnical and technical personnel to ensure the
overall project s success. ERP systems especially are fulfilling a critical role in the managing of
enterprises, taking on the tasks of managing accounting, financial reporting, supply chain
management, logistics and ongoing quality management of products, processes and the role of people
in adding value to finished goods and services (Ash, Burn, 2003). ERP has become the catalyst of
entirely new approaches to using information, including the ongoing development of analytics and
business intelligence (BI) applications that are giving executives greater visibility into their operations
than ever before (Ash, Burn, 2003). In addition to analytics and BI, companies are aggressively
pursuing Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems that give them the ability to more
effectively track and evaluate the performance of marketing and selling strategies. CRM systems are

In humans, the ileum is around 2 to 4 m long, and it stretches from the jejunum to the cecum.
Description:
The small intestine is the part of the gastrointestinal tract that lies between the stomach and the large
intestine. This is the place where maximum digestion and absorption of food takes place. The small
intestine is divided into three regions the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. When undigested food
enters the small intestine, various juices and enzymes act upon it to digest it. Once the food is digested
properly, it is ready for absorption. The walls of the small intestine are folded many times over to
increase the surface area of the small intestine, which helps to maximize the absorption of nutrients.

Imagery In Nikki Giovanni s Knoxville, Tennessee
Images are important as images can speak a great number of words. Nikki Giovanni s poem
Knoxville, Tennessee uses imagery to depict the theme of joys of childhood and family. The lines you

home style vibe. The imagery of the food can help contribute to the theme as the unidentified person
has ate with his family and is reminiscing about it showing the love and importance of family. The
simplicity of the words fresh and daddy are strong words which help show the image in your mind.

The Franco-Prussian War Essay
The Franco Prussian War
During the first half of the nineteenth century, Germany was made up of more than 30 small states, the
largest and most dominant of which was Prussia. Prussia had decided that all of the states should all be
united to create a bigger and better country, Germany. By the end of 1870 it had forced all of the
German states to accept its authority and create the German Empire with the King of Prussia at its
head (the Hohenzollen s). Everything was going to plan as Chancellor Prince Otto Von Bismarck
(person who was behind the unification of Germany) had anticipated apart from the four large states in
southern Germany who remained independent. Bismarck now needed a way to unite ... Show more

But this wasn t enough for the French government so they took the matter further, and the French
Ambassador was to see Wilhelm making sure that Leopold had given up all claims to the Spanish
throne. Wilhelm sent a telegram to Bismarck asking him to deal with the matter. On July 13th 1870
Bismarck published an amended version of the telegram, famously known as the Em s Telegram . This
suggested that Wilhelm had deliberately insulted the French Ambassador, and the French were so
outraged by this that on July 19th 1870 they declared war on Prussia just as Bismarck had planned.
For France the war was a disaster. 200,000 French troops found themselves facing 380,000 Prussian
troops who were more experienced, had better leadership and organization skills, and the Prussian
Mauser rifle was far better than the French Chassepot. Unfortunately 180,000 French troops were
surrounded in the Fortress of Metz and the French force that had been sent to help were too
surrounded at Sudan and surrendered. To make matters worse Napoleon III had also been taken
prisoner, and in Paris and independent republic was set up, and the city fought on for one year until
January 1871, but it was a lost battle.
As compensation for Prussia, Prussia wrote up the treaty of Frankfurt, in which France had to give

Glaeser City Sociology
1. According to Glaeser, cities attract talent and innovation due to its abundance of opportunity.
Historically, workers migrate to cities in search of employment and upward mobility, as demonstrated
by many cities migration patterns in the early twentieth century as a result of the Industrial
Revolution. However, Glaeser claims that in order to attract wealthy people, like Indian billionaire
Lakshmi Mittal to London, a city must prove to be pleasant and not only abundant in opportunity but
in entertainment because of all the people cities import. Restaurants are a major source of
entertainment in urban life, primarily for the experience of eating out and the fact that eating out is

sign of urban failure the painful crime rate and disintegration of urban amenities (104). According to
the data given of American metropolitan areas, Fresno has the lowest real wages at $44,501 while
Tulsa has the highest at $70,260. By Glaeser s argument, Fresno should be the metropolitan area with
the greatest amenities. However, Fresno has the lowest median family income and second highest cost
of living index. Out of the five cities, Boston is the most cosmopolitan. The city is rich with
entertainment establishment and enjoys a high median family income. Yet, Fresno appears to offer

Loie Fuller s Dance Critique
Critique 1
On Friday, September 11th at 7:00 PM, I attended Dancestry by the Shay Ishii Dance Company. This
performance was held by Texas State University s Department of Theatre and Dance.
The vision for the performance was to take modern dance pioneers and highlighting their work and
contributions.
The first segment of the night was highlighting Loie Fuller. Fuller was a choreographer and dancer of
a unique and beautiful style of dance, using dazzling and flowing silk dresses. Her breakthrough in
what became known as Serpentine Dance . In Friday s performance, it was evident that the beauty of
the dance wasn t because of the flowing dresses, but the lighting used to create beautiful images.

Her tribute consisted of three movements from Chopin Suite. All of them involved three young
women. The unique thing about these dances that separated them from the others showcased was that I
was actually able to follow them. They were more story like than the rest. Duncan s dance style was
similar to Fuller in that she utilized flowing scarves and dresses to enhance the dances. This part of the
show was my favorite, I love dances that tell a clear cut story, and Isadora Duncan s style of dance
allowed for that to happen.
The last segment of the night was highlighting the work of Erick Hawkins. Hawkins vision consisted
of unique dancing, costuming, and overall style of performance. He utilized traditions from New
Zealand tribes in his work. I personally was not a fan of the Hawkins performances. There was a lot of
nonsensical movements, and there was just too much going on the stage. Although there was only the
one stage, there were at times so many separate movements going on at once, it seemed that there
were 3 or 4 separate stages. I can see the appeal that some audience members could have had in
viewing this dance style, though. The music was very interesting, and the costumes even more so. I
was reminded at times of the Lion King. There were leaping antelope, huge porcupines, and several
fish all dancing on the stage. Although I wasn t very interested in Hawkin s dance style,

The Lymphatic System
The health of our lymphatic system is vital to the health of our whole body. This system is critical to
our body s ability to detoxify and regenerate tissues, filter out toxins and foreign substances, recover

The Lymphatic system keeps the water of the body clean, and the pumping of the nodes during
Lymphatic massage stimulates the production of various white blood cells and thus boosts the immune

This edema would causes tissue destruction or death, the problem is avoided by the presence of
lymphatic vessels that act as drains to collect the excess fluid and return it to the venous blood just
before it reaches the heart.
Manual lymphatic drainage is a massage focused on the moving and draining of the lymph from the
extremities into the nodes for processing and ultimately elimination. The natural movements of the
body, such as walking, standing, deep breathing and rigorous exercise all aid the lymphatic process
but correct massage more fully augments the finer workings of the lymph system. As there is not a
pump in the system (like the heart in the circulatory system) the lymph is moved through the vessels
when the surrounding skeletal muscle contracts, (physical activity). If there is a reduction of activity
or if the system is overloaded through diet or pollutants, the lymph system becomes stagnated and the
body is more prone to infection.
Manual lymphatic drainage massage can be performed in a variety of ways. There is lymphatic pump
manipulation done with a machine. There is superficial lymphatic drainage focusing on the vessels
and the lymph lying just below the surface of the skin, and there is deep tissue lymphatic drainage. In
a deep tissue massage, the movements are applied from the extremities toward the heart stimulating
the lymphatic circulation. While the blood is being returned to the heart

The Food System Is Essential For Sustaining Human Life
The food system is essential to sustaining human life, yet it often gets overlooked. Feeding a city
comes with a lot of issues, especially feeding the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) at a
population of 414,000 (Statistics Canada, 2015). Although food is required to sustain humans, it has
not always been produced sustainably in Halifax. Food sustainability is not only concerned with the
food people consume, but rather looks at the whole system, interconnecting social, economic, and
environmental components. In Halifax, barriers to food sustainability include greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions, food waste, food corporations, and food insecurity.
Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions
One of the main negative externalities of the food system in HRM is the vast amount of greenhouse
gas emissions produced. Looking at this in terms of an ecological footprint, a measurement of
resource consumption and waste production, Nova Scotians use approximately 8 hectares each. This is
more than four times the sustainable global amount of 1.8 hectares per person. Furthermore, Nova
Scotians food usage accounts for about one third of the total footprint (Lowe, 2007). Hence, there are
definitely driving factors within the HRM food system that are increasing the ecological footprint.
Transporting food to accessible locations is a large problem in Halifax. Out of approximately 4,000
farms in Nova Scotia, less than 200 are based in HRM. However, due to population dynamics, Halifax
and Dartmouth

The Opening Game Of The Winter Sport
The opening game of that winter sport, professional basketball, comes as unexpectedly as a first snow,

in such byways as Fort Dodge, Iowa, Monett, Mo., and Morris, Ill., and moved into the big cities to
start their fast and fierce spectacle once again.
They came, as always, with new plans, new hopes and new players. In the East the long suffering
majority of teams were anticipating that the champion Boston Celtics and their aging Bob Cousy

A number of able college coaches have at one time or another joined the pros. Fred Schaus (West

Having courage isn t the same as having no fear. It s being afraid and pushing forward anyway.
Although spoken by a fictional character, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III from Dreamworks
Dragons, this quote holds a very real truth. This truth is especially evident in the lives of siblings Hans
and Sophie Scholl, founders of a peaceful anti Nazi group in Germany called The White Rose. After
realizing the errors of Hitler s ways, they started writing anonymous leaflets to expose him, which
they knew could cause them a lot of trouble. Despite the looming danger of an entire nation pining
against them, the Scholls persevered courageously to make a difference in their own setting in a way
that inspires me to do the same. In the 1930s, German teenagers everywhere were joining the Hitler
Youth, a movement designed to separate the weak children from the strong adults, as it were. Hitler

Among the good natured types is moral courage. Moral courage is being persistent in the face of
adversity when everyone else is against what you know is right. This can be manifested in a variety of
ways. It can be as trivial as standing up to a bully or as extreme as going up against an entire nation to
spread a message it does not want to hear. The White Rose knew that Hitler was wrong, yet the wool
had been pulled so thickly over everyone s eyes, that it would take far too long to remove it all before
the authorities exterminated the bugs trying to undo their work. Even so, the White Rose knew that all
it takes is a spark to start an inferno. As little progress as it may have seemed they made, it graduated
into something phenomenal. In the words of Sophie Scholl, Somebody, after all, had to make a start.

has been reported that the average American is exposed to up to 600 625 ads every single day. We are
constantly bombarded with advertisements on a daily basis through posters, television and even

When carefully analyzed, one can see that the advertisers chose a prominent issue (acne), which is a
common area of insecurities among a reasonable portion of our society and provided a solution. To
support their solution to skin blemishes, they revealed customer testimonies, recruited a celebrity
spokesperson, displayed diversity in consumers, showed professional expert authorization and above
all, implemented that s not all technique. The commercial commences by identifying factors such as
makeup, oils and sweat which contribute to our skin problems and leads to acne among men and
women. Then, it proceeds to call out failed attempts such as washing our faces with bare hands and
paying for outrageously expensive facial tools. Next, the deep cleansing brush was introduced. This
new device will supposedly wash away all impurities and dirt from our pores which we cannot get to
by washing with our bare hands. Surprisingly, this sixty five dollar brush is offered free of charge
when the product is purchased. To prove the authenticity of this free yet effective brush, two qualified
dermatologists are presented. This improves the credibility of the product and its deep cleansing
power . In order to retain the audience s attention, create relativity and improve the attractiveness of
the product, two celebrities: Lily Aldridge (a Victoria s secret angel) and Sarah Michelle Gellar
provided their personal testimonies about the product. Bear in mind that these celebrities are regarded
as sweethearts and generally really nice people. This evokes the halo effect that viewers will begin to
associate with the product. To solidify their hold on the audience, they utilize that s not all technique
by promising to add a second brush head which increases the value of the product.

  • 2. Continuities In The Commerce Of The Indian Ocean From 650 CE to 1750 CE, there were many changes and continuities in the commerce of the Indian Ocean region. One major continuity in the commerce of the Indian Ocean was the emergence and use of the same trade routes for both imports and exports of goods such as gold and ivory. One major change was how the commerce of the Indian Ocean prospered economically. The commerce of the Indian Ocean developed rapidly, and the trade incorporated places such as East Africa, the Persian Gulf, Red Sea and India. Another major change was the increased involvement of the Europeans in the Indian Ocean commerce shortly after discovering it. One major continuity in the commerce of the Indian Ocean was the continued use of the same trade routes and ports in the Indian Ocean for imports and exports. Trading ports in East Africa served as a method of transporting goods from Africa. The goods being traded was another continuity. Gold, ivory, and iron were constantly being exported from Africa due to their profitable values. These items could be sold at a profit because they were scarce in Asian countries. Another continuity was the tradition in the use of monsoon winds to help travel. The Indian Ocean trade was made easier by the monsoon winds that circulated between Asia and the Eastern coast which reduced travel times, and produced favorable wind currents. However, there were also many changes in the commerce of the Indian Ocean. The commerce of the Indian Ocean changed the eastern coast of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Influence of the US and USSR in the... During the period following World War 2.The new Zionist movement of Jews immigrating to the Middle East to establish a homeland for all Jews in what was now Israel after being displaced for many years. This led to conflict between the Arabs and the Jews about who had rights to this homeland, with both the Arab Muslims and the Jewish Israelis having biblical claims to the cities in the Middle East. This conflict was further fuelled by both the USA and the USSR as they were trying to spread their sphere of influence by supplying aid in the form of weapons, ammunition and support to gain access to valuable resources and water ways. However their involvement was not a direct factor leading to the conflict between Israel and the Arab states but rather prolonging it by supplying tools of war. To begin with the USA had strong interests in the Middle East due to its resource rich lands and strategic importance in the world and would secure these aims by aligning themselves with Israel to land a foothold in the Middle East. The USA had strong interests in the Middle East for two main reasons the first being oil. The USA has always put its sources of oil on a priority. So when the Middle East became unstable the USA s first goal was to secure its source of oil. Secondly was the strategic location of Middle East being the link between three continents and home to the Suez Canal a vital shipping route from the Mediterranean to the Red sea. The USA also wanted to solidify the capitalist ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Apache Indians Essay The Apaches, like most Native Americans, have no written history other than that written by white men. But the story of the Apaches did not begin in the American Southwest but in the northwestern corner of North America, the western Subarctic region of Alaska and Canada. The Apache Indians belong to the southern branch of the Athabascan group, whose languages constitute a large family, with speakers in Alaska, western Canada, and American Southwest. The fact that the Apaches originated in the western mountainous Subarctic region makes their nomadic behavior after the arrival in the American Southwest more comprehensible; the tribes of the Southwest were highly mobile and moved from place to place depending on availability of food. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Raiding had been something to Apache had only done once in awhile but now that they couldn t hunt buffalo any longer raiding became necessary for their survival. The hostility between the Apache and the Spanish settlers increased when New Mexico became a Spanish Colony . From the time of the Spanish colonization until 1886 they were noted for their warlike disposition. According to the written history of whites, Apaches have always been hostile; in truth, serious warlike behavior could usually be attributed to belligerent behavior on the part of the whiteman, or misunderstandings between the two peoples. Since no single food source could support their people for any length of time the Athabaskan continued to move around. Because they were accustomed to living in mountainous regions their migration southward followed the Rocky Mountain range until they eventually reached the Southwestern us, probably in the 1500 s. The reason for all this southward trek is not so clear but is most likely because of lack of game and food. During the migration they broke into smaller bands that settled in various areas of the country. Those that landed in what are now the states of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah adopted some of the culture of the Pueblo Indians and eventually came to be known as Navajos; others, who became the Western ... • 5. Weber s Theory Of Authority The purpose of this essay is to analyse Weber s theory of authority and power in order to establish its role in the modern contemporary world today. Weber, in his most acclaimed writings, discusses his three ideal types of authority being outlined as traditional, charismatic and rational legal authority. He believes that in order for any political leader or political establishment to hold legitimate authority over its peoples, they must have either one of these types of authority. All of these types of power and authority can be referred to in some way in today s contemporary world using examples of differing political leaders and systems. However, Weber s writings were conducted in 1922 and may be considered as out dated, and not as relevant as they were at his time of writing. Also, many dispute that Weber s types of authority were perhaps not entirely relatable and Martin Spencer, like many other critics of Weber s work in fact argue that there should have been four types of authority. Hence why these issues must be discussed in order to conclude whether Weber s ideal types of authority are representative of political leaders and governments, and whether or not they can be associated with the contemporary world we live in today. Max Weber introduced his three types of authority in an essay which was first published in 1922 in German, and was later published in 1958 in English. Weber believes that many systems can consider themselves as holding legitimate authority, yet ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Homestead Lockout and Strike Essay Homestead Lockout and Strike On the night of July 6, 1892, an event would take place that would change American history forever. Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick were planning something that no one would ever expect. The Amalgamated Association (The AA) attempted to renew their contract, but because the majority of the employees were non union they decided to go with the majority and make it non union. Carnegie did not want to be directly involved with the break of the unions, so he brought in Frick to be in charge of the plant. His plans were to lockout the workers and bring in workers who would do what he wanted them to do with increased hours and less pay. Frick built a fifteen foot barbed wire fence around the plant to keep ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They were not willing to make any concessions. They wanted them to continue with the long hours as mandated by them. If the workers didn t agree to these terms they would be fired. Employers knew that people needed jobs and were not concerned about filling vacant positions. In today s age, if you re working that many hours we believe that we should get paid for what we worked. They felt they same way, but because of the union they didn t receive those rights. Some consequences of the strike were longer workdays. Days went from eight hour shifts to twelve hour shifts, six days a week. Wages were cut; all employees were working with a mandatory increase of hours and not making what they should have been making. People were not able to provide for their families. Conditions would continue this way until the steel industry unionized, but that would not be for about another forty four years later. Because of the way the economy is today, unfortunately history seems to be repeating itself. There seems to be a big push to get the unions out of the work force again. Businesses cannot afford the hirer wages, benefits and security that unions afford. Businesses are being forced to downsize resulting in the layoff of workers. Cutting medical benefits and hiring more employees but only for part time positions, to keep costs down. Employees are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. A Report On A Formal Report A formal report provides information on a particular problem or subject and gives a recommended course of action based on that information. Some of the different kinds of reports are feasibility studies, research reports, position papers and problem reports. Each type of report has its own set of requirements for effectiveness, but they have a lot of common elements which will be discussed in this paper. In addition to the components that make up a report, writing a report requires a technique or process that ensures the proper research is accomplished and the right data is included. Some people use checklists while others use a set of questions to ensure all the bases are covered. I will touch on the procedure for writing a report after the components section. Components of Formal Reports: Front matter, body and end matter are the major components of most formal reports. Each major component is made up of several subsections which can be removed or added as needed. Front Matter: The front matter precedes the text (Lannon Guark, 2014 p. 533) or, body of the report, its purpose is to introduce and summarize the report and contains the following elements; A letter that introduces the report (transmittal letter) to the person or group that asked for it. • 12. Alice Munro s The Amber Of The Moment Here we are, trapped in the amber of the moment. There is no why (Vonnegut 76 77). There are notable depictions of a sense of entrapment among protagonists in works such as Alice Munro s Dimension and Train. In these short stories, the central characters, Doree and Jackson suffer from a sensation of feeling trapped, due to their life experiences, which ultimately leads them becoming motivated to go onto the next chapter of their lives. There are overlapping themes and writing styles in each story, therefore accentuating the similarities between the experiences of Doree and Jackson, and bring the two stories closely together, evoking strong emotions and pathos within the reader. Thematically, Munro shows parallel ones in both Dimension and Train, with the most prominent ones being isolation, and relationships with family members and its affiliation with sexuality and gender. Munro s writing style rings identical in both stories as well, as each one incorporates the use of flashbacks, once again implementing a way to compare the characters, as the flashbacks provide explanations for being emotionally confined. Lastly, a prominent technique used is the way in which each story ends abruptly, stimulating a response in the reader of wanting more to the story, as the endings both foreshadow a start to a new life, although Doree breaks free whereas Jackson seemingly follows his cycle as a result from feeling trapped. Isolation is a theme that is largely present in both Dimension ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Don t Forget To Like, Share and Subscribe: A Critical Evaluation of the Contemporary Issues in Social Media The recent explosion in computer mediated communication has led to a phenomenal up surge in the availability and use of social networking sites. Dictionary.com describes the term social networking as an online community of people with a common interest who use a website or other technologies to communicate with each other and share information, resources, etc. and, within the last 10/15 years, there have been significant developments in technology making these online communities even easier to access. During the late 90 s and early 2000s, there was limited interactivity on computers and internet speeds; this is what s known as Web 1.0. In 1995, Clifford Stoll wrote an article for Newsweek titled The Internet? Bah! Hype alert: Why cyberspace isn t, and will never be, nirvana . In his article, he went on to describe what little faith he has in the internet lasting very long and that he thought it was just a temporary craze . Little did he know that by the year 2012, some 2 billion people around the world be using the internet and social media via computers, smartphones, tablet devices and consoles as well as internet enabled televisions and e readers . Palamon recognizes his just penalty and does not argue against it. After Arcite is wounded during the tournament and he becomes aware of his impending death, he calls Emily and Palamon to his side. • 15. Use Of Hydraulic Systems Used From Ancient Egypt 1. INTRODUCTION ___________________________________________________________________ 1.1 Chronology of Hydraulics A machine could be described as a device which reduces human effort. Machines consist of various components which perform their intended operations to give the desired result. Engines, Vehicles, computers etc are all examples of machines we come across in our daily lives. Hydraulic machines are those devices which use the power of a liquid to perform simple work. These machines are based on the principle of hydraulics which deals with the mechanical properties of liquids. Properties of fluids provide the basis of hydraulics. A hydraulic press is one such device which is based on this principle. The use of hydraulic systems can be traced to the regions of ancient Egypt, China and various other regions where the principle of hydraulics was used for a variety of purposes but it was only in the modern era that the concept of hydraulics was put to use for operating machinery and in the development of hydraulic power networks. Numerous scientists like Blaise Pascal and Benedetto Castelli contributed enormously in this regard. 1.2 The Science of Hydraulics The term hydraulics is derived from the Greek words hydro (meaning water) and aulics (meaning pipes). Because photographs surround us, we are able to utilize photography to explore the world. Susan Sontag, author of On Photography, has an alternate point of view on photography. When Sontag implies that photography lets us know how we think about the world, we acknowledge it as the camera records it; this is essentially what photography is all about, but it involves the photographer s view utilizing a camera to record both a physical reality and an internal reality. Sontag s claim that photography constrains our comprehension of the world is a great observation; conversely, today s current photograph manipulation makes it difficult to see what reality truly is. Photography is taking pictures. Following its invention in the 1800s, the photographic picture and its consistent development have formed our experience of reality. Regardless of the brilliant ascent of photography from an interest to a mass medium over the previous century, there is something unspeakably, yet unquestionably diverse, about visual society in the advanced age. The feel of simply unique and natural without a moment s delay particular and profoundly established is at the embodiment of the photographic image itself. ( Americans are patriotic, honest, lazy, and selfish, according to Americans: The Washington Post ) Selfishness is displayed in the play All My Sons, as there is much conflict centered around one family relating to the ideas of marriage, death, and lying. In this play, the author, Arthur Miller, reveals that most people really do not care about others, by showing that they are indeed selfish, so they can look better than other people. This is portrayed by the character Joe Keller. Joe s selfishness is shown through how he blames others, and tries to cover up his mistakes, rather than owning up to them. This interpretation is important because it makes the reader think of how they act, and if they would be that 70% of the American population that is considered selfish. First, Miller illustrates how Joe acts selfish by depicting how he blames others. In the contents of the play, Joe tends to blame Steve, his previous business partner, for the majority of his problems. Throughout the play Steve is in jail because Joe blamed him for manufacturing, and distributing all of the defective plane parts that eventually lead to the death of twenty one innocent pilots. Since JIT does away with supply inventory, companies are sometimes forced to be over dependent on their JIT suppliers. Sometimes they are at their suppliers mercy. Examples of this can be found at Ford Motor Company and General Motors. Ford faced a problem with one of its suppliers which forced them to shut down six plants which cost them tens of millions of dollars. So it would depend on the person on what they think about the world since everyone is different. It is what you believe of what you have heard and would take it to heart of what you believe. For example in the book called Finding Your Worldview: Thinking Christianly about the World, it gives an example of different color lens. When you give others a different color lens each of them is going to be seeing it differently and that is how Worldview works and it would impact your life when you would respond to issues in the world. A worldview would feed off a person that would base every action, opinion and a response that they would see in the world. So since the world is built around their life, they would share what they have seen and experienced. People always wonder how life began or mankind comes into existence and it is hard for someone to explain what you believe by just saying what you think is right. It tells and shows God creating the heavens and the earth in the beginning. (Genesis 1:1). In the bible, God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh day. (Genesis 2:1 3) Christians believe that God created us in His own image. (Genesis 1:27) God made us to be like Him; of course we are not nearly perfect as God. A disability can be defined as a limitation of function because of an impairment (Lane, 2008, p. 277). To some, deaf people [seem] limited in some functions because of an impairment of hearing (Lane, 2008, p. 277). However, this determination of disability has arisen from norms and the technologies of normalization (Lane, 2008, p. 279) by the hearing and otherwise able bodied world. To the hearing world, Deaf people lack the ability to hear; a sense which so many of us hearing people depend on. In actuality, the only reason Deaf people seem to suffer is because we, the hearing majority, have placed our own beliefs and values on them. By labeling Deaf people as disabled, we are guilty of audism and ableism, as we [insist] that inherent biological factors determine individual traits and capacity (Lane, 2008, p. 282), and assume their life is lacking because they either cannot hear or cannot hear as well as we think they should. The natural movements of the body, such as walking, standing, deep breathing and rigorous exercise all aid the lymphatic process but correct massage more fully augments the finer workings of the lymph system. As there is not a pump in the system (like the heart in the circulatory system) the lymph is moved through the vessels when the surrounding skeletal muscle contracts, (physical activity). If there is a reduction of activity or if the system is overloaded through diet or pollutants, the lymph system becomes stagnated and the body is more prone to infection. Manual lymphatic drainage massage can be performed in a variety of ways. There is lymphatic pump manipulation done with a machine. There is superficial lymphatic drainage focusing on the vessels and the lymph lying just below the surface of the skin, and there is deep tissue lymphatic drainage. In a deep tissue massage, the movements are applied from the extremities toward the heart stimulating the lymphatic circulation. While the blood is being returned to the heart ... • 32. The Food System Is Essential For Sustaining Human Life The food system is essential to sustaining human life, yet it often gets overlooked. Feeding a city comes with a lot of issues, especially feeding the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) at a population of 414,000 (Statistics Canada, 2015). Although food is required to sustain humans, it has not always been produced sustainably in Halifax. Food sustainability is not only concerned with the food people consume, but rather looks at the whole system, interconnecting social, economic, and environmental components. In Halifax, barriers to food sustainability include greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, food waste, food corporations, and food insecurity. Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions One of the main negative externalities of the food system in HRM is the vast amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced. Looking at this in terms of an ecological footprint, a measurement of resource consumption and waste production, Nova Scotians use approximately 8 hectares each. This is more than four times the sustainable global amount of 1.8 hectares per person. Furthermore, Nova Scotians food usage accounts for about one third of the total footprint (Lowe, 2007). Hence, there are definitely driving factors within the HRM food system that are increasing the ecological footprint. Transporting food to accessible locations is a large problem in Halifax. Out of approximately 4,000 farms in Nova Scotia, less than 200 are based in HRM. However, due to population dynamics, Halifax and Dartmouth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. The Opening Game Of The Winter Sport The opening game of that winter sport, professional basketball, comes as unexpectedly as a first snow, bat a good deal earlier. Thus, the World Series had hardly ended and football little more than arrived last week when the nine teams of the National Basketball Association stopped exhibiting their talents in such byways as Fort Dodge, Iowa, Monett, Mo., and Morris, Ill., and moved into the big cities to start their fast and fierce spectacle once again. They came, as always, with new plans, new hopes and new players. In the East the long suffering majority of teams were anticipating that the champion Boston Celtics and their aging Bob Cousy might stumble at last, while in the West the worry was that the St. Louis Hawks would not stumble, ... His challenge is to develop further and properly use the game s greatest individual talent and toughest problem Wilt Chamberlain. And his eventual effect may be to measurably change the character of professional basketball from the brawling, hustling, cigar in the face and eye on the till game it has been for decades to the major league sport which it longs and deserves to be. A number of able college coaches have at one time or another joined the pros. Fred Schaus (West Virginia) of the Los Angeles Lakers and Eddie Donovan (St. Bonaventure) of the New York Knickerbockers are two of the most notable recent ones. But never before has the NBA gotten a coach who was as famous, esteemed and skilled at handling athletes as Frank McGuire. In his nine years at the University of North Carolina he consistently produced a national basketball power. He did it with players he brought south from the streets of New York, and that he could do this despite the intense competition for metropolitan area boys is indicative of the personality of the man. McGuire was born and raised in New York s Greenwich Village, the 13th child of an Irish cop. He worked on the docks, he played pro basketball (in the unassuming American League), he coached at his alma mater, St. John s University, and he made lasting, loyal friends by the hundreds. It was through his friends that he recruited New York s best basketball players for a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Essay Starting A Spark Starting a Spark Having courage isn t the same as having no fear. It s being afraid and pushing forward anyway. Although spoken by a fictional character, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III from Dreamworks Dragons, this quote holds a very real truth. This truth is especially evident in the lives of siblings Hans and Sophie Scholl, founders of a peaceful anti Nazi group in Germany called The White Rose. After realizing the errors of Hitler s ways, they started writing anonymous leaflets to expose him, which they knew could cause them a lot of trouble. Despite the looming danger of an entire nation pining against them, the Scholls persevered courageously to make a difference in their own setting in a way that inspires me to do the same. In the 1930s, German teenagers everywhere were joining the Hitler Youth, a movement designed to separate the weak children from the strong adults, as it were. Hitler believed that the future of Germany laid in the children ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Among the good natured types is moral courage. Moral courage is being persistent in the face of adversity when everyone else is against what you know is right. This can be manifested in a variety of ways. It can be as trivial as standing up to a bully or as extreme as going up against an entire nation to spread a message it does not want to hear. The White Rose knew that Hitler was wrong, yet the wool had been pulled so thickly over everyone s eyes, that it would take far too long to remove it all before the authorities exterminated the bugs trying to undo their work. Even so, the White Rose knew that all it takes is a spark to start an inferno. As little progress as it may have seemed they made, it graduated into something phenomenal. In the words of Sophie Scholl, Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just do not dare to express themselves as we did ... • 35. Proactiv Skincare Advertising The Media: Manipulating the public? The media is one of the most significant agents of socialization in our society. This means that to some extent, the media has some power over our opinions or expected behavior as citizens. This necessarily is not a horrible thing but it is not marvelous either. It has been reported that the average American is exposed to up to 600 625 ads every single day. We are constantly bombarded with advertisements on a daily basis through posters, television and even newspapers. It is quite impressive that we are still capable of responding to ads after being exposed countless times. Not to imply that all ads are detrimental but most times, the message is usually to persuade us to make a purchase that will in some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This commercial was successful in convincing me to purchase their product through a central route. When carefully analyzed, one can see that the advertisers chose a prominent issue (acne), which is a common area of insecurities among a reasonable portion of our society and provided a solution. To support their solution to skin blemishes, they revealed customer testimonies, recruited a celebrity spokesperson, displayed diversity in consumers, showed professional expert authorization and above all, implemented that s not all technique. The commercial commences by identifying factors such as makeup, oils and sweat which contribute to our skin problems and leads to acne among men and women. Then, it proceeds to call out failed attempts such as washing our faces with bare hands and paying for outrageously expensive facial tools. Next, the deep cleansing brush was introduced. This new device will supposedly wash away all impurities and dirt from our pores which we cannot get to by washing with our bare hands. Surprisingly, this sixty five dollar brush is offered free of charge when the product is purchased. To prove the authenticity of this free yet effective brush, two qualified dermatologists are presented. This improves the credibility of the product and its deep cleansing power . In order to retain the audience s attention, create relativity and improve the attractiveness of the product, two celebrities: Lily Aldridge (a Victoria s secret angel) and Sarah Michelle Gellar provided their personal testimonies about the product. Bear in mind that these celebrities are regarded as sweethearts and generally really nice people. This evokes the halo effect that viewers will begin to associate with the product. To solidify their hold on the audience, they utilize that s not all technique by promising to add a second brush head which increases the value of the product. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
