The Happiness Trap Analysis
Recently, I read the book The Happiness Trap by Russ Harris and Bev Aisbett and at first I really
hated the book. It was patronizing, belittling and used an excess amount of exclamation marks. It also
said things such as let your mind chatter away like a radio in the background which I do not agree
with at all. I think that you should always pay attention to your emotions and thoughts, and that
dealing with them is much different than ignoring them. I overlooked this line, however and continued
reading, and athough I didn t like it at first, I tried to keep an open mind about the book, as the reviews

In the movie, A Beautiful Mind, the main character John Nash, a genius mathematician, struggles with
the constant pressure he puts upon himself in regards to creating an original idea. This intense stress
and anxiety eventually develops into paranoid schizophrenia. Throughout the movie Nash and his
wife, Alicia, have to try and cope with his constant delusions. This movie, by going through the life of
John Nash, depicts his struggle with schizophrenia, the different treatments he has to endeavor, and his
development as a person which can be seen through Gardner s Theory of Multiple Intelligences.
Once John arrives at Princeton he is still on the search for his original idea. The constant stress that he
brings upon himself in order to try and achieve his goal is starting to have negative effects on him.
This can be seen during the scene in which he meets his roommate Charles, who is a lackadaisical
character who doesn t have the same drive and passion as John does in regards to achieving greatness.

make cuts to necessary programs in order to finance the Act as whole. For example, the PPACA will
cut $575 billion from the Medicare budget in order to pay for the subsidies and tax breaks that the
program offers and many experts argue that this could not come at a worse time (Weinstein 2010). The
baby boomers are starting to come of age for Medicare and the program is going to be under more
stress than it has ever experienced before. To put it into perspective, 77 million individuals were born
during the baby boom between 1946 1965 and now with people projected to live up to 9 years longer
than when Medicare was instituted, there will be a higher demand for Medicare that will continue to
grow as more and more people become eligible (Keehan 2008). Furthermore, with this much money
being cut from Medicare, the money to fund it will have to come from other sources such as taxes.
Unfortunately, these taxes will be placed on the individuals too young to receive Medicare and these
will be added on to the new taxes that will come as a result of the PPACA. Even though the cuts made
by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act are trying to save money, they are made in the

further reinforce critical values gained by prisoners during prior rehabilitation.
This means that even if a prison were to offer inmates the most innovative forms of rehabilitation, the
