To Be or Not To Be .. a Man
Being a man during the medieval period meant a lot more than being a man in the twenty first century.
There were certain expectations, and above all, different aspects when it came down to what being a
man was. Some things that are very evident are kinship, brotherhood, male to male relationships, and
bonding. While reading The Wonderer and Beowulf, it is very easy to pick out spots where these
different aspects are shown. So, how exactly do we know how these acts are being portrayed?
While reading Beowulf, right off the back the reader can get a sense of what being a man means.
There is a bond of unity from the very beginning. Brotherhood and kinship go hand in hand because
even though Beowulf did not need any help from the men who traveled with him, they all stood by
him and were there for moral support. The relationships between men seemed like they were a lot
more important, than those with women. Not only are women rarely mentioned during this time, but
when they were, they were often portrayed as damsels in distress. This is where kinship and
brotherhood go hand in hand. Just because these men were not of the same bloodline, that did not
make them any less of a family. There was always constant support, especially for Beowulf, and no
one ever really went against each other.

As a person who was not born and raised in the United States, I though these kinds of problem only
existed in my country, especially in the Asian region. The article opens my eyes on how subtle racial

In this experiment, we observed the pollination of various plants by various pollinators in the
Binghamton University Nature Preserve. We collected data by observing various plants by the pond
trail area of the nature preserve and attempted to explain why some plants were structurally more
attractive to pollinators than other plants. While observing a variety of plants, it became clear that the
Goldenrod Plant and the Aster plant were the most attractive. This conclusion was drawn because they

Knapweed was pollinated by a total of 8 pollinators (6 Bumble Bees, 2 Butterflies).

(1930). Given their similar internal structures, we would focus on a difference in flower length, an
external structure, to explain the differences in pollinator visitations. Previous work by Gross Werner
has shown the average flower length of Goldenrod plants to be ¾ of an inch (1983). Previous work by
Harder has shown the average flower length of Aster plants to be 2 inches (1985).

For this portion of the project, my partner and I went back to the neighborhood center to observe and
coach the teachers with the specific language strategies we suggested for them. We did this twice,
once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Our goal for this portion of the project was to again
observe and note what the teachers and children were doing well, and to provide suggestions to what
could be improved. Compared to the first observations I noticed Jihan and one of the aides using more
self talk and parallel talk with the children. I felt that Jihan and the aides took our suggestions to heart
and tried to implement them into various situations, and not just the example situations we provided
them with. During snack time Jihan did a good job of commentating on what a child was doing (now
you are cleaning up your area, and now you are bringing your spoon to the bucket, and now you are
going to the sink to wash your hands). In circle time, Amaira did a good job of describing what the
child was doing (you are banging the instruments together, he s playing the xylophone, she s playing
the triangle). We tried to reinforce their use of the strategies by smiling and nodding when they
demonstrated the strategy. I wanted to let the know the aides that they were doing a good job, but I
also did not want them to feel patronized. I think with more experience as a clinician, I will become

We did this twice, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Our goal for this portion of the project was to again observe and note what the teachers and children were doing well, and to provide suggestions to what could be improved. Compared to the first observations I noticed Jihan and one of the aides using more self talk and parallel talk with the children. I felt that Jihan and the aides took our suggestions to heart and tried to implement them into various situations, and not just the example situations we provided them with. During snack time Jihan did a good job of commentating on what a child was doing (now you are cleaning up your area, and now you are bringing your spoon to the bucket, and now you are going to the sink to wash your hands). In circle time, Amaira did a good job of describing what the child was doing (you are banging the instruments together, he s playing the xylophone, she s playing the triangle). We tried to reinforce their use of the strategies by smiling and nodding when they demonstrated the strategy. I wanted to let the know the aides that they were doing a good job, but I also did not want them to feel patronized.
