Themes Of Sacrifice In The Hunger Games And The Maze Runner
The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner are two best selling novels that both embrace the latest
craze of young adult dystopian literature. Both novels encompass the genre of science fiction and
accentuate the main theme of sacrifice, although the authors portray the themes in different ways. In
addition, the main character in the Hunger Games, Katniss and the main character in The Maze
Runner, Thomas are both impelled to fight for their lives in artificial worlds which serves as the main
conflict in both novels. However, the Hunger Games and The Maze Runner bare conspicuous
differences such as in the Hunger Games District 12 lives in poverty and have scarce amounts of food
while in The Maze Runner they re civilized, have a surplus of food, and ... Show more content on

The main characters in both novels have hope that they will be able to escape. In the Hunger Games
Katniss is put into an arena and is forced to fight in order to make it out alive. I really think I stand a
chance of doing it now. Winning. It s not just having the arrows or outsmarting the Careers a few
times, although those things help. Something happened when I was holding Rue s hand, watching the
life drain out of her. Now I am determined to avenge her, and I can only do that by winning and
thereby making myself unforgettable (242). Katniss is determined to win the Games and fight for her
life. In the end of the Hunger Games Katniss succeeded and made it out of the arena. Likewise, in The
Maze Runner Thomas and his friends are trapped in the Glade. The only way to escape the Glade is to
solve the Maze. Towards the end of The Maze Runner the Glade starts falling apart forcing Thomas
and his friends to work together and decode the Maze. Thomas and his friends decrypt the Maze and
figure out how to escape. After two years of being treated like mice, tonight we re making a stand.
Tonight we re taking the fight back to the Creators, no matter what we have to go through to get there.
Tonight the Grievers better be scared (328). The denouement of The Maze Runner was victorious and
they finally made it out of the Glade. Therefore, both novels

Morality Is Not The End All Be All
Morality is not the End All be All Morality is a set of principles that individuals use to distinguish
between right and wrong, good and bad actions. Being the code by which we live our lives, morality is
a concept that leaks into almost every aspect of human life. For example, even a mundane activity like
eating a sandwich for lunch can have moral implications. Consider this question, was the turkey that
ended up on the sandwich raised in horrific factory farm conditions and subjected to torturous
treatment? That is a question with heavy moral implications. Distinguishing right action from wrong is
a crucial skill for humans to have, but is morality the only thing that truly matters about a person.
Susan Wolf, an esteemed philosopher, thinks it is not. Wolf argues that morality is just one of many
aspects and values of a person. In other words, people are more than just moral beings and we should
be happy that this is the case. This paper will provide a brief look at Susan Wolf s argument as well as
my argument for why her contention is the correct one. First a brief summary of one of Wolf s most
notable pieces, Moral Saints . In Moral Saints , Wolf argues from example. She opens her piece by
asserting that she does not know if there are moral saints in the world, but she is happy that she has
not encountered any in her life. Wolf then goes on describing two different kinds of moral saints that
she believes can be conceptualized using common sense, the loving saint and

ENC 1102 Dutchman Thematic Analysis
The phrase racial tension is a small description of the main theme in Dutchman by Amiri Baraka.
While race is a vital part of the underlying messages in the play, it stems to a much broader term. In
Dutchman Amiri Baraka attempts to grasp the attention of the African American society. Baraka uses
Clay s character to show readers that complete assimilation into another culture is wrong. He wants to
awaken the African American men and women in a predominately Caucasian American culture to
subconsciously kill the person that is portrayed by Clay in the play. Not only does Baraka want
readers and audience members to kill their inner Clay, but refuse to conform to ... Show more content

Clay, you liver lipped white man. You would be Christian. You ain t no nigger, you re just a dirty
white man. Get up. Clay. Dance, with me, Clay. Clay: Lula! Sit down, now. Be cool. Even through
Lula insulted him and spoke badly about his mother clay still responded in an apprehensive way. Lula
s aggressiveness in her speech angers Clay to the point where he curses at her, that is after she calls
him an Uncle Tom Wooly Head. (Martin 62)(Kumar 276)
At the end of scene one Lula says You re a murderer, Clay, and you know it. (Baraka 2751)This quote
could be thought of as a subliminal way of saying that Clay killed the black man inside of him. All
throughout the first scene Lula has the more aggressive and dominant role, but in scene two Clay takes
on the more authoritative role, while Lula ends up being the actual murderer at the end of the play.
Lula s plot to kill Clay is in some way foreshadowed when the other passengers board the train and
she says we ll pretend that people cannot see you . (Baraka 2751) Clay tries to defend himself all
throughout the play but doesn t succeed because he can t defend something that he is not. While Lula
is insulting the stereotypes and behavior of black men, Clay cannot fully defend them because he
himself isn t truly black . (Klinkowitz 123 124)
Baraka used a sense of satire because instead of directly inputting his opinion about Clay he played off
of Lula s character,

Comparison Of The BookThe Joy Luck Club And The Joy Luck Club
Jim Butcher once said: When everything goes to hell, the people who stand by you without flinching
they are your family. No matter what, family will always help; the same can be said for friends who
are family. In the article, The Friendships That Hold Us Safely in Their Keep by Sara Lukinson and
the novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, many similarities and differences can be found pertaining
to family. In many circumstances, friends become your family especially if they have stayed by your
side. This can be said for both the novel and the article because they characterize friends as family. In
the book, Amy wrote, Auntie, Uncle, I say, repeatedly, nodding to each person there. I have always
called these old family friends Auntie and Uncle. (Tan 15). Jing Mei Woo describes her family s
friends using the titles of Aunt and Uncle; normally reserved for your parent s siblings. Throughout
her article, Lukinson explains how her friends helped her cope with her sister s death. Towards the end
of the article she says, My friends, I am lucky to say, held on tightly even on the days I wanted to let
go. When I could find no place for myself, they did. (Lukinson 2017). Although she does not directly
say her friends are like her family, Sara s friends do things that a family would; keeping her grounded
in reality and reassuring her whenever there is doubt. At some point of a person s life, they experience
death; whether it is the death of a loved one or a stranger

Robert Frost Reconsidering Perspectives
Discoveries often require individuals to reconsider their perspective and develop a new understanding
of the world around them. Examine this statement in relation to your prescribed text and ONE related
text. Often, discoveries can demand a re evaluation of one s outlook on life. Arguably, the process of
reconsidering perspectives is a way of making sense of the world and coming to terms with
confronting realities. This is examined throughout Robert Frost s poetic texts Stopping by woods on a
snowy evening (SBW) and the Tuft of Flowers (TTOF) and Sean Penn s film, Into the Wild (ITW).
Here the composers criticise the varied ramifications of emotional and intellectual discoveries on
individuals that have led them to reconsider their personal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

you must be a natural born citizen of the United States, you must be 35 years old, and have been a

Animal Testing Over 100 Years Essay
If you lived in 1900, you could only expect to live to 47.3 years old (berkeley.edu). However, today
you can expect to live to see your 78th birthday, that s a difference of 31.5 years (cdc.gov). Why such
an age difference in just over 100 years? There are several factors that contribute to a longer life
expectancy today. They include, healthier lifestyles, better hygiene, and notice of public health. But,
the greatest contribution comes from medical advancements, such as vaccinations, surgical
procedures, and medications that have been discovered through the process of animal testing. Animals
have contributed greatly to the prolonged life spans of humans.
Take polio for example. From the late 19th century through the early 1950 s, an ... Show more content

In 1933 more than twelve women were blinded and one died from permanent mascara called Lash
Lure; due to a chemical in the product called p phenylenediamine, which was untested (National
Research Council of the National Academies). Again, this was before product safety tests were
required by law.
Not only do humans benefit from animal research, but animals do too. Animals develop many of the
same diseases that people do and there are many procedures performed on people that are also
performed on animals to improve their quality of life. Some treatments found through animal testing
that benefit animals are treatments for diabetes, cancer, arthritis, vaccinations, antibiotics, and surgical
techniques (psbr.org).
There are currently in vitro models such as cell cultures and computer modeling that are in use that
can replace some animal models. It is hopeful that one day animals will not need to be used in
experiments. However, as of today all animals cannot be replaced by such models.
As you can see with these examples, it is absolutely necessary to use animals in research; for diseases
that currently exist and for the ones yet to be discovered. There is no doubt that using animals to test
products and to develop lifesaving medications and surgical procedures have improved our quality of
life

Gender Roles In Chrysanthemums
The short story Chrysanthemums, written by John Steinbeck in 1938, portrays the conformity to
societal gender roles of females throughout most of the nineteenth century. Many women in the 1930s
were entering the workforce where they were faced with lower wages and harsh working conditions.
Married women at the time often faced more hostility in the workplace, due to the fact that they
highlighted the image of women taking away men s jobs, and the fact that a woman s place is in the
home taking care of their children. While women were able to work, stereotypical societal roles
continued to shape the way women lived inside and outside of the workplace. In the home, the roles
included cooking, cleaning, watching the children and providing ... Show more content on

The love she wishes for herself and the peddler is a lustful, rebellious one. It serves more as a

husband whom she is tied down to. Once the peddler leaves, and Elisa sees her flower has been tossed

With her flower symbolizing her womanhood, she is able to see but not acknowledge the fact that she

as her wanted freedom will only be thrown away and soiled by men or other controlling forces.
The transformation of Elisa s clothes also serve as a symbol of her longing to escape the traditional

way. I was insistent on being normal and doing normal things. It probably wasn t advisable to go to

Class This Semester Has Been Good
Class this semester has been good. It was a well taught and constructed course. The atmosphere was
always enjoyable unlike a few of my classes. Professor Airek created an open environment that let me
as a student feel as ease communicating and being involved in class. We ve shared many laughs and I
ve grown as a writer and as a student. I ve learned that essays need to be turned in on time and stapled
together. But most of all, I have learned to never give up. One experience in class that I won t forget
was on a Monday morning when we watched a deer frolic through campus like it was his natural
habitat. It just really symbolizes our class and how it is based around random comedy. I can vouch that
simple things like that and cracking jokes in class makes students more at ease in the classroom. We
aren t completely dreading waking up at 7:30 AM every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday when we
know we that class isn t going to be hell. Even while we are having fun in class, we simultaneously
learn things through either short, non throat slitting lectures and/or interesting exercises. I say
interesting because I ve never done things in any of my English classes in high school like I ve done in
Composition 1. This is a good thing. The red barn exercise was one of my favorites. This left it up to
the imagination of the writer to take over and conjure his or her own alternate ending with the prompt

Clausewitz s Continued Relevance In 21st Century Warfare
Clausewitz s Continued Relevance in 21st Century Warfare
It was my ambition to write a book that would not be forgotten after two or three years, and that
possibly might be picked up more than once by those who are interested in the subject. Carl Von
Clausewitz
For over 180 years, the writings of Carl Von Clausewitz have influenced strategists and generals alike.
In fact, Clausewitzian thought has dominated how wars have been waged since the publication of his
writings in 1832. It is interesting to note, that although he had written his thoughts on war and conflict
for several years, his most well known work, On War, was not published until after his death. Even
then, editors completed the final manuscript for him. Although his writings have been influential in
militaries around the world, many modern critics believe that Clausewitz s theories are outdated.
Today s strategist is left to take new lessons and make his own decisions on how best to apply the text.
Clausewitz developed many theories on the conduct of war, but he is perhaps best known for his
attempt to describe the nature of war. Clausewitz understood the importance of history and explained,
every age had its own kind of war, its own limiting conditions, and its own peculiar preconceptions.
While most theorists can find some common ground on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Essay on Sigmund Freud s Ego Defense Mechanisms
Sigmund Freud is perhaps one of the most well known theorists in regards to the study of the human
psyche. Freud s model of the human psyche is comprised of three core elements: the Id, or the
unconscious mind; things out of our awareness. The
Superego, or the subconscious mind, and finally the Ego, which lies between the unconscious and
subconscious. Freud proposes that there are nine ego defense mechanisms that act the ego uses in its
job as the mediator between the id and the superego. In psychoanalysis, an ego defense mechanism is
an unconscious personality reaction that the ego uses to protect our conscious mind from threatening
feelings or perceptions.
The ego defense mechanisms are as follows: denial, displacement, ... Show more content on

If I m planning to do something but something else comes up, I may try and rationalize the decision
by putting down the other option weather is going to be bad , I didn t really want to do that anyway ,
or I can always go later . Another example is entertainment movies, music, or activities; I may not like
a certain type of film or genre of music, but when American pop culture is rife with that type of music
or movie, I ll try and rationalize my association with such things as everything in moderation or it s
fine, as long as I don t indulge . Displacement is another defense mechanism I ve noticed. If I m
having a bad day or if I m mad for one reason or another, I notice that I d often take it out on
undeserving people. Often I would use an angry tone with someone if I d just been in an argument, as
my anger has not yet subsided. As with everything, everything in moderation . I believe ego defense
mechanisms are not completely unhealthy, and that using them to deal with some situations can prove
to be beneficial in the development of our personality. However, if one relies primarily on ego defense
mechanisms and refuses to deal with circumstances head on , they will develop problems later in life.
In situations when one is undoubtedly guilty, it is impossible to rationalize or justify their actions or
attitudes and hide behind unfounded explanations in

Similarities And Differences Of President Obama And Barack...
The 2008 Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee John

in many ways. Both men differ in background, military and religion, and views on different subjects
dealing with the United States. Even though they differ for the most part, the two candidates do have a
few similarities.
Barack Obama is forty seven years old and was born on August 4th, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii (obama

Panama Canal Zone, where his mother and father; both naval officers were stationed (obama

includes Cherokee Indians and Lueo people of Kenya. John McCain graduated from Episcopal High
School in Virginia and then went on t the United States Naval Academy in 1958 (obama mccain.info).
Barack Obama went to many different schools up through High School, but then attended Occidental

Paul s By Paul Summary
Introduction
Our spritual journey is harsh. Thanks to the development of media, a plethora of information facilities
our life as Christians. However, in other words, our identity of Christian are always in risk of jeopardy
by wrong or extreme information. Paul, who handled a numerous problem of the incipient Church,
would give the answer to us, who are waiting for the second coming of Jesus as the early church was.
I believe that Paul would encourage us, who are already citizens of heaven, to go forward to the glory
of Jesus wholeheartedly, whereas respecting the fruits of the race of Christian journey to obtain the
trophy of transformation into Jesus. By exegeting and analyzing Philippians 3:17 4:1 with consulting

As people of Philippi enjoy all rights, and public service of Rome, they are also eligible for all

Roman citizen in Philippi would be familiar with these conjoined terms applied to Caesar, and they

Alluding to the hymn (2:5 11) by using the words, form, humiliation and power, the next verse
elucidates the privilege of the citizen of heaven. Again, Paul shows his paradoxical theology by using
opposite words, humiliation and glory, impressing the paradoxical dynamism of salvation with a
divine initiative on the recipients. Interestingly, Paul does not use the plural form, but use singular
form, our body. By this, Paul probably shows the communal characteristic of salvation here.
Confirming his point by further exhortation, stand firm, Paul conculdes his presentation (4:1). He
mentions his trophy of the stoic race (3:12 14) is not only resurrection (3:10), transformation (3:21),
but also the congregation in Philippi. Thus, Paul seems to regard the Church as risen body of

Examples Of John Proctor In The Crucible
John Proctor; Tragic Hero or Ordinary Joe Plays have been used as a method of storytelling and form
of entertainment for hundreds of years. A tragedy is one type of play where the audience pities the
characters and fear the same consequences that the characters face. In addition, tragedies often include
a tragic hero who has a tragic flaw causing his or her downfall. One example of a play that is a tragedy
and includes a tragic hero is the The Crucible. John Proctor in The Crucible is a true tragic hero
because he possess the four characteristics of goodness, superiority, tragic flaw, and realization of his
downfall. In order to be a true tragic hero, the protagonist must be a moral and ethical person. Proctor

Together with having extensive land, Proctor´s crops were doing considerably well compared to other
farmers (Act 2). Not all farmers in the region are lucky and suffer from crop failures. Because of his
successful harvest and land, Proctor is considered superior and privileged in the Salem community.
Therefore, Proctor is a tragic hero because he holds the characteristics of superiority. One cannot be a
tragic hero with a tragic flaw. This flaw will lead to the downfall of the protagonist. Proctor s tragic
flaw is his inability to avoid temptation. Specifically, Proctor gave into temptation of Abigail. In Act 1,
Abigail confronts Proctor about his nightly visits to Abigail s window. Proctor agrees that he has been
visiting Abigail, owing to that he can not avoid the temptation of Abigail. Although Abigail and him
are no longer seeing each other, Proctor cannot stay away from Abigail and gives into temptation to
visit Abigail. Another example that demonstrates Proctor s inability to avoid temptation is when
Proctor confesses to the court about his relationship with Abigail (Act 2). In court, Proctor could have
kept the court oblivious to the fact that he and Abigail had a relationship, instead as a last resort,
Proctor gave into the temptation and informed the court. In the process Proctor also ruined his name in
the community. By giving into temptation, Proctor caused his own demise. Tragic heroes eventually

Theme Of Satire In Lazarillo De Tormes
Lazarillo de Tormes is a famous work of Spanish literature published anonymously. The novel is
written in the first person. Lazarillo de Tormes is known as a picaresque novel in that the novel is
written about a character of the lower class instead of a hero or upper class character. The novel has
several themes, but the theme that is constant throughout the novel is appearance versus reality. The
author utilizes several rhetorical devices in the novel which add emphasis to the story. The novel,
which was banned by the Spanish Crown during the time of the Spanish inquisition, is the story of the
birth and life Lazarillo de Tormes as he serves various masters and his struggle for survival. His
struggles are real. Many of the rhetorical devices serve to add humor to the novel as well. The author
uses satire to support the theme of appearance versus reality. The definition of satire is an attempt to
ridicule, mock, or criticize something or someone with humorous content. Satire is a rhetorical device
that is used throughout the novel. The author uses humor in the wake of misfortune. This is evident in
the chapter where Lazarillo serves his first master, a blind man. He treated Lazarillo horribly and also
starved him. Lazarillo learns many deceitful things from his master which will serve him well
throughout his life. Lazarillo s goal was to get away from the blind man. An example of satire is the
quote, What! You smelled the sausage and you couldn t smell the post? Ole ? Ole ? I jeered (Albert,
Michael 17). Lazarillo was making fun of the blind man for being able to smell the difference in the
sausage and rotten turnips, but he did not smell the post that Lazarillo purposefully guided him into.
Lazarillo was set on getting away from his first master and this is the clever way that Lazarillo gets
away. He leaves without knowing the condition of his first master. In the end, Lazarillo did manage to
outwit the blind man. The author s portrayal of the clergy can be considered satire as well. The clergy
is portrayed very negatively in the novel. The clergy is not noble, honest or Christ like which is what
people normally equate with a man that holds such a position. According to T. Anthony Perry, there is
a high

In the Preface, Ellis recreates the sense of urgency felt at the time of the Revolutionary War. Ellis
discusses how the founding members of the revolutionary generation secured their legacies through
battle and later though legislation. Ellis reminds the reader that our forefathers risked being hung for
treason. No other colony at that time in history had ever successfully won its independence to form a
lasting republic, thus the United States had no basis to build upon.
Ellis supplements the reader with many of the different perspectives of the American Revolution.
Some of the revolutionary leaders thought in the long run that America had the potential to become a
unified nation. Others were more shortsighted; they just wanted to secede ... Show more content on

The Jeffersonian tale claims that the nation formed a successful republic, only to fail at the hands of
the Federalists led by Alexander Hamilton. The other interpretation suggests that the Federalist leaders
created an inclusive government which was marred by the ideologies of Jefferson and his associates.
To this day, the debate between the dominant political parties remains, and can be traced to this
unsolvable conflict. Thankfully, the government was so overwhelmed by practical problems that these
issues did not cause a civil war.
Analysis
Ellis hopes to draw attention to the Founding Fathers as they really were: men of unique talent caught
in the crossfire of a revolution, but prone to mistakes as well as victory and success. Ellis not only
uncovers the truth of these seminal figures, but also reveals how their actions influenced the course of
history. Therefore, he focuses primarily on the players themselves, wishing to explore how their
relationships resonated through political changes.
Ellis wants the readers to realize the anxieties that these men actually felt at the time, when success
was not so assured. The chapters are linked both by Ellis pursuit of balanced truth and the

Lockheed Martin Research Paper
I chose the Lockheed Martin Company because of how their planes and technology have furthered the
innovation within the aviation world. Many of their planes have been used to break records or have
broken records themselves. They have also built planes that were necessary in a few wars. The
Lockheed Martin company was started in 1995 but originally it consisted of two separate companies.
These companies were the Glen L. Martin Company and the Lockheed Aircraft Company. These two
companies created several important innovations that have shaped how aviation and aeronautics are
thought about. Martin flew the first plane he made in 1909. The plane was built inside of a church that
he rented. The Lockheed brothers Allan Haines Lockheed flew his ... Show more content on

(One single person can be responsible of 90% of the companie s revenue) So , we have two solutions :
first , to find the best employee and put him in charge of the professional users and large corporate
accounts and use the other 9 employees to cover DIYs . The second solution is to make a cost benefit
analysis to determine if having 9 employees that generate only 10% of the companie s revenue is
profitable (Pareto principle) . So , we think that the company should let go to the DIYs clients and
maybe use this employees to find new bigger customers. On this manner, the company would focuss
only in professional users and large corporate accounts , this would generate much more profit and
reduce cost of unnecessary employees and time.
* Finally , the time zones problem . 40% of the companie s clients are located on a different time zone
so , the customer service is not available at certain time . For this , we think that the best solution is to

accounts needs will be covered . The other 9 employees will continue with a normal schedule from

Since the first human cord blood transplant (UCBT) performed back in 1988, much has been learned
about UCBT. Cord blood banks have been established worldwide for the collection, cryopreservation
and distribution of UCB for HSCT. Today, a global network of cord blood banks and transplant

Pollution And Its Effects On The Environment
From plastic bags to pesticides the greater part of the waste we deliver ashore inevitably reaches the
oceans, either through purposeful dumping or from keeping running off through channels and

Dangerous chemicals Almost every marine living being, from a minor tiny fish to whales and polar
bears, is polluted with man made chemicals, for example, pesticides and chemicals utilized as a part of
the normal customer product. Some of these chemicals enter the ocean through intentional dumping.
For a considerable length of time, the seas have been an advantageous dumping ground for waste

transfer of about everything, including dangerous material, for example, pesticides, substance
weapons, and radioactive waste.
Dumping of the most poisonous materials was banned from the London Dumping Convention in
1972, and a changed bargain at 1996 (the London Convention) further confined what could be
dumped adrift. Be that as it may, there are still the issues of as of now dumped lethal material, and
even the transfer of allowed substances adrift can be a generous ecological hazard.Chemicals

Theory Analysis And Skill Training
1. Briefly explain the concept of paradigm.
A paradigm is defined as the fundamental way in which we think and define reality. It may include
values and beliefs that influence our decisions on what is real and what is not. It is how we know the
things we know. It is our own awareness of ourselves as observers and knowers and may relate to how
we think and act in certain situations. It is also how we process what is real and how we present our
knowings to others. In a paradigm no right or wrong answers are presented but instead fundamental
assumptions are used.
2.What is the dominant paradigm guiding practice and research in special education? Explain a few
key features of this paradigm.
The dominant paradigm is known as the Newtonian Mechanistic Paradigm and is often referred to as
the machine paradigm. This paradigm views animals and humans as machines. Simplicity is very
important and all complexity is often broken down and translated. Information is arranged logically
and sequentially. The theory includes task analysis and skill training and has a focus on quantity
instead of quality. It also ranks human behavior. This method does not value personal knowledge or
individuality. It does not focus on the process of learning or students motivation for learning.
3. Can you cite any professional examples of mechanistic practice that you ve encountered? (or if you
are currently teaching, you may describe what you do that may exemplify mechanistic practice)

The Causes Of Premature Neonates
Introduction
Premature neonates or preterm babies refer to the neonates that are born before 37 weeks of gestation
are over. Given that most of the body organs are not completely developed at this stage, the neonates
have a high risk of developing many complications at birth. A good example of these organs is the
lungs, which completely mature by week 36 of gestation. The surfactant production does not begin
until 20 weeks of gestation age; at this stage of gestation surfactant only present in small amount and
in immature form. The mature surfactant production begins approximately after 35 weeks of gestation
age. Even though the lung has mature surfactant at this stage it is not completely capable of
respiratory function. Therefore, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, even if these methods have managed to reduce mortality in preterm infants, they are
associated with serious adverse effects that may be fatal or contribute to chronic conditions later in life
of the patient.
According to DiBlasi, even in animal models, the conventional methods cause inflammation of the
lungs and sometimes cause injure to the lungs.1 These techniques also cause redundancy in alveolar
growth and also affect the efficacy of surfactant produced in the animal lung.1 This is a good signal
that these techniques may have serious consequences in the neonate. One of the adverse effects of
invasive and mechanical ventilation is ventilator induced lung injury.1 This complication is defined by
the presence of polytrauma (excessive tidal volume) and shear injury to the airways, a condition
known as atelectrauma.1 Insertion of the endotracheal tube into the lungs through the airways also
causes injury to the lungs and the airways, a condition known as endotrauma.1
Insertion of the endotracheal tube through the airways is also a painful procedure that may need the
neonate to be sedated first. According to DiBlasi, insertion of the tube may also cause acute airway
injury, emergencies, an infestation of the airway with bacteria,

Students Should Get Paid For Good Grades Essay
Should Students Get Paid For Good Grades?
Why do almost all students dread school? Though the answer may differ between different people, the
main reason why most students dread school is because we have to go to school almost everyday and
work, receiving no reward. There is nothing to look forward to in school and though the idea may
sound absurd, students should get paid for good grades. School is work, it s difficult and it takes up
our entire day, filling the rest of our free time with homework or topics to study. If we got paid for
doing good in school, then we would be encouraged to keep up the hard work and we would put more
effort in school. Meaning that the next generation of adults would be well educated and would benefit
society in many ways. Getting paid for good grades would also help us see the responsibility that
comes with money. It would also help prepare us for life after school because we would know how to
spend our money wisely, so in other words, students should get paid for good grades because school is
work, we would be more encouraged to be diligent and we would learn the responsibility that comes
with money.
First off, school requires a mental effort which by definition is considered to be work. Since we go to
school for 8 hours every day and do that about 180 days per year, we should get paid if we keep our
grades up because it s hard to do. Keeping good grades requires lots of hard work and effort. It also
requires time, which some of us

The Lewis Blackman Case Case Study
The Lewis Blackman case is an unfortunate case of failure to be ready to deal with unexpected
problems, failure to recognize the problem, and failure to respond to the crisis at hand. Clinical
warning signs and symptoms were clearly present and even recognized by the healthcare team
however, they failed to recognize the significance of the data and correlate it to impending crisis
which lead to failure to rescue. There was a presence of understanding the data but a lack of cognitive
ability to translate the data into meaningful information to guide decision making efforts. The focus of
the team was obviously focused on the fact that the expected and anticipated plan of care for Lewis
Blackman only accounted for a favorable outcome ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Blackman s complaints, signs, and symptoms were downplayed and eventually he was transferred out
of the PACU with no further plan of care, assessment of the issues, or action to alleviate his
complaints. 3 days postoperative, with continued scheduled Ketorolac administration, Lewis pain was
unfathomable. Despite repeated attempts to gain the attention of the healthcare team to Blackman s
impending crisis, his pain was once again downplayed. The nurses again failed to recognize the
significance of his increasing abdominal pain and deterioration, chalking it up to gas pain, suggesting
only movement and a bath as the acceptable plan of care. Lewis symptoms continued to progress and
he deteriorated to a state of clinical shock evidenced by abnormally low temperature and increased
heart rate and respiratory rate accompanied by extreme paleness, enlarged abdomen, with absent
bowel sounds. Inexperience, lack of recognition, and failure to rescue eventually led to the unexpected
death of Lewis Blackman (Acquaviva, et al., 2013).
Was the healthcare team ready to care for Lewis Blackman? In this case, it appears that the healthcare
team was anchored in the fact that Lewis was a healthy, young man. Because of this they were unable
to think outside of the expected outcome. While it is clear that signs and symptoms leading up to
Lewis critical condition and unnecessary death were recognized the healthcare team appears to have
been unable to

factors that contribute to the logic behind the decisions made by humans that negatively impact the

Orson Welles Influences
When talking about how the Western culture has been influenced over the years, it is impossible not to

in his young years he was introduced to much of the world around him, his childhood wasn t exactly

Women Entrepreneurs And Social Incubators Essay
In this chapter literature on women entrepreneurs and social incubators is discussed. It also explains
the conceptual framework and conceptual map of the study..
2.1 Concept of Women Entrepreneur
Women or a group of women who initiate, organize and operates a business enterprise is defined as
Women Entrepreneurs . The Government of India has defined women entrepreneurs as an enterprise
owned and controlled by women having a minimum financial interest of 51 per cent of the capital and
giving at least 51 per cent of the employment generated in the enterprise to women. Women
Entrepreneur is a person who accepts challenging role to meet her personal needs and become
economically independent (Meenu Goyal and Jai Prakash, 2011, pp. ). In India, these entrepreneurs
are part of the larger sustainable development strategy employed by the policymakers. Evidence
shows that Women entrepreneurship has already contributed to the economic growth across the world
and women led enterprises are increasing in every country.. These enterprises also created a large
number of job opportunities in their respective economies. Apart from this, these enterprises also
created new business solutions for the pressing social problems.Further in whole enterprises scenario,
number of enterprises owned by women is very less compared to men. Government of India has
implemented various schemes for development of such enterprises but impact is yet to be seen. Over

Buying A New Home Market
The choice to purchase a new home in today s market is very challenging to make after considering
the disadvantages and the advantages. The current real estate market decides that today is the excellent
time to buy a house as prices and the interest rate are still low. Sadly, many economic signals reveal
that the real estate market may not have reached the bottom yet and more losses might be in store for
the near future. The choice to buy real estate should be meticulously considered and massively
dependent upon the actions of the local real estate market neighboring today s buyers and sellers. A lot

In this position, buyers have a provisional advantage over sellers because buyers can demand
incentives from sellers to close the transaction or find another agreeable seller. The opportunity cost,
or whatever someone is willing to give up in exchange for what he or she wants, is typically basic
because the buyer can simply find another house that meets his or her needs. The opportunity cost for
sellers in this market are typically very high as they may waste time with buyers who do not intend to
buy their property; time is very important to sellers, but not as important to buyers in this type of
market. Sellers are typically highly motivated to sell and can easily become desperate to sell a home
quickly in a buyer s market; buyers can easily take advantage of a seller in trouble. In a seller s
market, buyers stand to lose haggling power such as seller improvements that could help buyers with
closing costs because the number of homes available for purchase isn t as many; buyers will have
limited choices of homes for sale. In this position, sellers have a provisional advantage over buyers
because sellers can demand full price, cash only, and zero incentive to close the transaction. The
opportunity cost is typically essential for sellers in this market because they can simply wait for the

Darwinism And Religion Gould Summary
At the beginning of the essay Gould made a clear reference to a dear friend, Kirtley Mather, who was
a pillar of both science and Christian religion in America (Gould, 1981). Comparatively, this appealed
to the emotions of the reader, unlike most scholarly works Gould reminded the reader of his humanity.
Often, Christians relate evolution as being the work of a devil, or some form of subhuman, out to
misguide their faith; therefore, the reader assumed this was Gould s way of facilitating a viable
connection with biased readers before undermining creationism. Darwinism is known as the theory of
evolution, and creationists repeatedly utilize a mistaken vernacular of the word theory to denounce
evolution. Although, a theory is part of a hierarchy of confidence running downhill from fact to theory
to hypothesis to guess (Gould, 1981). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

And humans evolved from apelike ancestors whether they did so by Darwin s proposed mechanism or
by some other, yet to be discovered (Gould, 1981). In other words, Darwinism is a theory, but human
genetics were, without a doubt, sown from the same seeds as apes, and even if another theory replaces

A Survey On The Healthcare System Essay
Introduction Some believe the healthcare may be the most scrutinized industry out there today
(Ashrafi, Kelleher Kuiboer, 2014). As the government continues to reform the U.S. healthcare system
away from a fee for service to a value based model, many institutions are turning to business
intelligence (BI) and analytics for assistance. Moving forward providers of healthcare are responsible
for the overall care of patients from admission, discharge and now if the patient returns for the same
issue. According to Graaff and Austin, the push by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid organization
for meaningful use stage 2 requirements, was one of the first changes to place emphasis in the area of
BI within the industry. Although healthcare continues use utilize BI to aid with improving quality of
care, operational efficiencies, controlling costs and staying ahead of competitors to name a few. Per a
study conducted by Deloitte, health system analytics may be the missing key to unlock value based
care (Morris, Mittal, Chang Shukla, 2015). A survey by Teksystems conducted in 2014, stated that
roughly 58 percent of physician practices and hospitals stated their organization has not yet implement
a BI solution. Regardless of the numbers, many healthcare organizations have experienced success
with the adoption of BI. Not to mention enabling better decision making throughout the entire
organization. Per the Deloitte Center for Health Solution 2015 US Hospital and Health System

Themes Of Edgar Allan Poe
Another of Poe s strong emotions was anger, leading him to seek revenge. Seasonal changes just as

Edgar Allan Poe s life experiences had a adult impact on the topics and themes of his writing. One of
the most common themes in Edgar Allen Poe s poems and clerestory relating to death are The Black
Cat, The Masque of the Red Death, Cast of Amontillado, Annabel Lee and The Raven . Prophet!
aforesaid I, thing of evil prophet still, if bird or devil! This in my opinion relates to how he did not

that are in the back of our minds when we walk into a dark room or turn a corner in that erie basement
many of us have, and in that way he stays with us. They are some examples that empahsis this. An
example of the influence of alcohol is The Black Cat. Here, Poe writes about committing gruesome
acts while he is intoxicated. Poe had a cottage in Fordham New York; a nearby university was

  • 2. Themes Of Sacrifice In The Hunger Games And The Maze Runner The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner are two best selling novels that both embrace the latest craze of young adult dystopian literature. Both novels encompass the genre of science fiction and accentuate the main theme of sacrifice, although the authors portray the themes in different ways. In addition, the main character in the Hunger Games, Katniss and the main character in The Maze Runner, Thomas are both impelled to fight for their lives in artificial worlds which serves as the main conflict in both novels. However, the Hunger Games and The Maze Runner bare conspicuous differences such as in the Hunger Games District 12 lives in poverty and have scarce amounts of food while in The Maze Runner they re civilized, have a surplus of food, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main characters in both novels have hope that they will be able to escape. In the Hunger Games Katniss is put into an arena and is forced to fight in order to make it out alive. I really think I stand a chance of doing it now. Winning. It s not just having the arrows or outsmarting the Careers a few times, although those things help. Something happened when I was holding Rue s hand, watching the life drain out of her. Now I am determined to avenge her, and I can only do that by winning and thereby making myself unforgettable (242). Katniss is determined to win the Games and fight for her life. In the end of the Hunger Games Katniss succeeded and made it out of the arena. Likewise, in The Maze Runner Thomas and his friends are trapped in the Glade. The only way to escape the Glade is to solve the Maze. Towards the end of The Maze Runner the Glade starts falling apart forcing Thomas and his friends to work together and decode the Maze. Thomas and his friends decrypt the Maze and figure out how to escape. After two years of being treated like mice, tonight we re making a stand. Tonight we re taking the fight back to the Creators, no matter what we have to go through to get there. Tonight the Grievers better be scared (328). • 3. Morality Is Not The End All Be All Morality is not the End All be All Morality is a set of principles that individuals use to distinguish between right and wrong, good and bad actions. Being the code by which we live our lives, morality is a concept that leaks into almost every aspect of human life. For example, even a mundane activity like eating a sandwich for lunch can have moral implications. Consider this question, was the turkey that ended up on the sandwich raised in horrific factory farm conditions and subjected to torturous treatment? That is a question with heavy moral implications. Distinguishing right action from wrong is a crucial skill for humans to have, but is morality the only thing that truly matters about a person. Susan Wolf, an esteemed philosopher, thinks it is not. Wolf argues that morality is just one of many aspects and values of a person. In other words, people are more than just moral beings and we should be happy that this is the case. This paper will provide a brief look at Susan Wolf s argument as well as my argument for why her contention is the correct one. First a brief summary of one of Wolf s most notable pieces, Moral Saints . In Moral Saints , Wolf argues from example. She opens her piece by asserting that she does not know if there are moral saints in the world, but she is happy that she has not encountered any in her life. Wolf then goes on describing two different kinds of moral saints that she believes can be conceptualized using common sense, the loving saint and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Dutchman Williams, Jae`da June 19, 2012 ENC 1102 Dutchman Thematic Analysis The phrase racial tension is a small description of the main theme in Dutchman by Amiri Baraka. While race is a vital part of the underlying messages in the play, it stems to a much broader term. In Dutchman Amiri Baraka attempts to grasp the attention of the African American society. Baraka uses Clay s character to show readers that complete assimilation into another culture is wrong. He wants to awaken the African American men and women in a predominately Caucasian American culture to subconsciously kill the person that is portrayed by Clay in the play. Not only does Baraka want readers and audience members to kill their inner Clay, but refuse to conform to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Clay, you liver lipped white man. You would be Christian. You ain t no nigger, you re just a dirty white man. Get up. Clay. Dance, with me, Clay. Clay: Lula! Sit down, now. Be cool. Even through Lula insulted him and spoke badly about his mother clay still responded in an apprehensive way. Lula s aggressiveness in her speech angers Clay to the point where he curses at her, that is after she calls him an Uncle Tom Wooly Head. (Martin 62)(Kumar 276) At the end of scene one Lula says You re a murderer, Clay, and you know it. (Baraka 2751)This quote could be thought of as a subliminal way of saying that Clay killed the black man inside of him. All throughout the first scene Lula has the more aggressive and dominant role, but in scene two Clay takes on the more authoritative role, while Lula ends up being the actual murderer at the end of the play. Lula s plot to kill Clay is in some way foreshadowed when the other passengers board the train and she says we ll pretend that people cannot see you . (Baraka 2751) Clay tries to defend himself all throughout the play but doesn t succeed because he can t defend something that he is not. While Lula is insulting the stereotypes and behavior of black men, Clay cannot fully defend them because he himself isn t truly black . (Klinkowitz 123 124) Baraka used a sense of satire because instead of directly inputting his opinion about Clay he played off of Lula s character, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Comparison Of The BookThe Joy Luck Club And The Joy Luck Club Jim Butcher once said: When everything goes to hell, the people who stand by you without flinching they are your family. No matter what, family will always help; the same can be said for friends who are family. In the article, The Friendships That Hold Us Safely in Their Keep by Sara Lukinson and the novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, many similarities and differences can be found pertaining to family. In many circumstances, friends become your family especially if they have stayed by your side. This can be said for both the novel and the article because they characterize friends as family. In the book, Amy wrote, Auntie, Uncle, I say, repeatedly, nodding to each person there. I have always called these old family friends Auntie and Uncle. (Tan 15). Jing Mei Woo describes her family s friends using the titles of Aunt and Uncle; normally reserved for your parent s siblings. Throughout her article, Lukinson explains how her friends helped her cope with her sister s death. Towards the end of the article she says, My friends, I am lucky to say, held on tightly even on the days I wanted to let go. When I could find no place for myself, they did. (Lukinson 2017). Although she does not directly say her friends are like her family, Sara s friends do things that a family would; keeping her grounded in reality and reassuring her whenever there is doubt. • 6. Robert Frost Reconsidering Perspectives Discoveries often require individuals to reconsider their perspective and develop a new understanding of the world around them. Examine this statement in relation to your prescribed text and ONE related text. Often, discoveries can demand a re evaluation of one s outlook on life. Arguably, the process of reconsidering perspectives is a way of making sense of the world and coming to terms with confronting realities. This is examined throughout Robert Frost s poetic texts Stopping by woods on a snowy evening (SBW) and the Tuft of Flowers (TTOF) and Sean Penn s film, Into the Wild (ITW). • 8. Animal Testing Over 100 Years Essay If you lived in 1900, you could only expect to live to 47.3 years old (berkeley.edu). However, today you can expect to live to see your 78th birthday, that s a difference of 31.5 years (cdc.gov). Why such an age difference in just over 100 years? There are several factors that contribute to a longer life expectancy today. They include, healthier lifestyles, better hygiene, and notice of public health. But, the greatest contribution comes from medical advancements, such as vaccinations, surgical procedures, and medications that have been discovered through the process of animal testing. Animals develop many of the same diseases that people do and there are many procedures performed on people that are also performed on animals to improve their quality of life. Some treatments found through animal testing that benefit animals are treatments for diabetes, cancer, arthritis, vaccinations, antibiotics, and surgical techniques (psbr.org). There are currently in vitro models such as cell cultures and computer modeling that are in use that can replace some animal models. It is hopeful that one day animals will not need to be used in experiments. However, as of today all animals cannot be replaced by such models. As you can see with these examples, it is absolutely necessary to use animals in research; for diseases that currently exist and for the ones yet to be discovered. • 9. Gender Roles In Chrysanthemums The short story Chrysanthemums, written by John Steinbeck in 1938, portrays the conformity to societal gender roles of females throughout most of the nineteenth century. Many women in the 1930s were entering the workforce where they were faced with lower wages and harsh working conditions. Married women at the time often faced more hostility in the workplace, due to the fact that they highlighted the image of women taking away men s jobs, and the fact that a woman s place is in the home taking care of their children. While women were able to work, stereotypical societal roles continued to shape the way women lived inside and outside of the workplace. Once the peddler leaves, and Elisa sees her flower has been tossed out onto the road, like her fantasy relationship with the peddler, and her eyes would not obey (Steinbeck 6). While Elisa s eyes are unable to look away from her flower that was tossed away, her soul is unable to accept the fact that she will never be able to obtain the abstract lifestyle she longs for. With her flower symbolizing her womanhood, she is able to see but not acknowledge the fact that she will never be able to escape the inequality of the stereotypical roles of women she if forced to live in, as her wanted freedom will only be thrown away and soiled by men or other controlling forces. The transformation of Elisa s clothes also serve as a symbol of her longing to escape the traditional womanly roles she is forced to take on. • 10. Summary Of Eliza And Her Monsters Outside Reading Book Essay: Eliza and Her Monsters Ignoring fame was my rebellion, in a funny way. I was insistent on being normal and doing normal things. It probably wasn t advisable to go to college in America and room with a complete stranger. And it probably wasn t wise to share a bathroom with eight other people in a coed dorm. Looking back, that was crazy, Emma Watson. Fame is something that consequently cannot be ignored once gained without bearing great consequences and risk to its owner. Rather than being appreciative towards her parents for what they said and their praise, Eliza instantly shrinks away from it, her biggest secret having made its way into the real world. Had she not been anxious about getting such attention for it, she would ve been okay with her identity being known, but all Eliza wanted was to live her life in the shadows, a dream that s now been shattered. • 11. Class This Semester Has Been Good Class this semester has been good. It was a well taught and constructed course. The atmosphere was always enjoyable unlike a few of my classes. Professor Airek created an open environment that let me as a student feel as ease communicating and being involved in class. We ve shared many laughs and I ve grown as a writer and as a student. I ve learned that essays need to be turned in on time and stapled together. But most of all, I have learned to never give up. One experience in class that I won t forget was on a Monday morning when we watched a deer frolic through campus like it was his natural habitat. It just really symbolizes our class and how it is based around random comedy. I can vouch that simple things like that and cracking jokes in class makes students more at ease in the classroom. We aren t completely dreading waking up at 7:30 AM every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday when we know we that class isn t going to be hell. Even while we are having fun in class, we simultaneously learn things through either short, non throat slitting lectures and/or interesting exercises. I say interesting because I ve never done things in any of my English classes in high school like I ve done in Composition 1. This is a good thing. The red barn exercise was one of my favorites. This left it up to the imagination of the writer to take over and conjure his or her own alternate ending with the prompt in a short amount of time. • 12. Clausewitz s Continued Relevance In 21st Century Warfare Clausewitz s Continued Relevance in 21st Century Warfare It was my ambition to write a book that would not be forgotten after two or three years, and that possibly might be picked up more than once by those who are interested in the subject. Carl Von Clausewitz For over 180 years, the writings of Carl Von Clausewitz have influenced strategists and generals alike. In fact, Clausewitzian thought has dominated how wars have been waged since the publication of his writings in 1832. It is interesting to note, that although he had written his thoughts on war and conflict for several years, his most well known work, On War, was not published until after his death. Even then, editors completed the final manuscript for him. Although his writings have been influential in militaries around the world, many modern critics believe that Clausewitz s theories are outdated. Today s strategist is left to take new lessons and make his own decisions on how best to apply the text. Clausewitz developed many theories on the conduct of war, but he is perhaps best known for his attempt to describe the nature of war. • 13. Essay on Sigmund Freud s Ego Defense Mechanisms Sigmund Freud is perhaps one of the most well known theorists in regards to the study of the human psyche. Freud s model of the human psyche is comprised of three core elements: the Id, or the unconscious mind; things out of our awareness. The Superego, or the subconscious mind, and finally the Ego, which lies between the unconscious and subconscious. Freud proposes that there are nine ego defense mechanisms that act the ego uses in its job as the mediator between the id and the superego. In psychoanalysis, an ego defense mechanism is an unconscious personality reaction that the ego uses to protect our conscious mind from threatening feelings or perceptions. Lazarillo de Tormes is known as a picaresque novel in that the novel is written about a character of the lower class instead of a hero or upper class character. The novel has several themes, but the theme that is constant throughout the novel is appearance versus reality. The author utilizes several rhetorical devices in the novel which add emphasis to the story. The novel, which was banned by the Spanish Crown during the time of the Spanish inquisition, is the story of the birth and life Lazarillo de Tormes as he serves various masters and his struggle for survival. His struggles are real. Many of the rhetorical devices serve to add humor to the novel as well. The author uses satire to support the theme of appearance versus reality. The definition of satire is an attempt to ridicule, mock, or criticize something or someone with humorous content. Satire is a rhetorical device that is used throughout the novel. The author uses humor in the wake of misfortune. This is evident in the chapter where Lazarillo serves his first master, a blind man. He treated Lazarillo horribly and also starved him. Lazarillo learns many deceitful things from his master which will serve him well throughout his life. Lazarillo s goal was to get away from the blind man. An example of satire is the quote, What! You smelled the sausage and you couldn t smell the post? Ole ? Ole ? I jeered (Albert, Michael 17). Lazarillo was making fun of the blind man for being able to smell the difference in the sausage and rotten turnips, but he did not smell the post that Lazarillo purposefully guided him into. Lazarillo was set on getting away from his first master and this is the clever way that Lazarillo gets away. He leaves without knowing the condition of his first master. In the end, Lazarillo did manage to outwit the blind man. The author s portrayal of the clergy can be considered satire as well. The clergy is portrayed very negatively in the novel. The clergy is not noble, honest or Christ like which is what people normally equate with a man that holds such a position. According to T. Anthony Perry, there is a high ... It may include values and beliefs that influence our decisions on what is real and what is not. It is how we know the things we know. It is our own awareness of ourselves as observers and knowers and may relate to how we think and act in certain situations. It is also how we process what is real and how we present our knowings to others. Though the answer may differ between different people, the main reason why most students dread school is because we have to go to school almost everyday and work, receiving no reward. There is nothing to look forward to in school and though the idea may sound absurd, students should get paid for good grades. It would also help prepare us for life after school because we would know how to spend our money wisely, so in other words, students should get paid for good grades because school is work, we would be more encouraged to be diligent and we would learn the responsibility that comes with money.
