3.2 Chemistry of chitin
Similar to its polysaccharide nature, Chitin has a similar chemical structure as that of cellulose. It is
reported to be a polymer with high molecular weight of N acetyl D glucosamine units which are
linked by β D bonds, which has 1000 3000 units (Shahidi Abuzaytoun 2005). In similarity with
cellulose, chitin has an acetamido group at its C2 postion unlike cellulose which has a hydroxyl group
(Shahidi Abuzaytoun 2005). Figure 1 shows the structure of chitin, its derivative chitosan and

heteropolymers as compared to cellulose which is a homopolymer (Kumar R 2000). In addition to the
structure of chitin the degree of N acetylation is also an important part of its chemistry. It is important
to know the chemistry related to the degree of N acetylation that is the ratio of 2 acetamido 2 deoxy D
glucopyranose to 2 amino 2 deoxy D glucopyranose (Kumar R 2000), before considering its
application for specific purposes. Furthermore, chitosan is one such universally accepted derivative of
chitin that is obtained by N deacetylation to such a degree at which it is soluble in aqueous solution of

On Thursday, the 4th of December 2014 at 0730hrs, a call was received of a forty one (41) year old
female whose chief complaint was abdominal pain with nil other symptoms. The call was assigned
Code Two, and the crew was dispatched to the private residence the call originated from. On arrival,
the patient was found in the main bedroom laying supine, guarding the lower abdominal area and as
the crew entered the room, the patient curled up onto her side. The patient stated eight out of ten
(8/10) pain located inferior to the umbilical region to right iliac, that came on suddenly after urination.
Pain was worse on movement and palpation, and nausea followed pain. On initial examination, the
patient was well perfused, all vital signs were within normal ranges and nil further complaints.
Abdomen was soft, non tender on palpitation, non distended, and patient denied any blood or dark
coloured stools, nil urinary symptoms, nil constipation. Patient was given 3mL of methoxyflurane to
assist with extrication to vehicle, with partial effect until patient became non compliant with use.
Patient was then given 50mcg of Fentanyl with good effect, bringing pain down to two out of ten
(2/10). Enroute to the hospital, the patient became pale, diaphoretic, nauseous and dizzy with
continuous abdominal pain. Patient became hypotensive, however all other vital signs remained stable.

3.3 Clear Statement of Requirements
According to Mueller (2005), the FBI did not have complete set of system requirements when the
contract was awarded to SAIC. Even though the FBI had an 800 plus requirements document, the
requirements were too complicated, incomplete and not sufficiently defined. Also the requirements
documents focused more on the finer details of the system layout instead of the high level functions of
the system (Goldstein, 2005). Failure of the VCF project was also caused by continuously changing
requirements. During the project life cycle, the FBI made 400 change requests most of which had
major impact on what was already designed and produced.
3.4 Proper planning
The VCF project lacked of proper planning. Firstly, the FBI had no Chief Information Officer (CIO) at
the start of the project. Without a CIO, the FBI had no standard software infrastructure. The FBI had
23 divisions, each with their own IT budget, investigations database and applications (Goldstein,
2005).
Secondly, the FBI had no Enterprise Architecture (EA) in place to assist them in making effective
decisions about IT projects. This shortage lead to the SAIC developers having no formal
documentation of how the FBI s IT structure and systems are mapped to its processes to guide them
during the development of the VCF system. Also SAIC was awarded a contract that did not have a
defined project schedule and milestones.
