Physical Appearance Of Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
Kayla Caputo
Ms. Schindler
English IV
23 March 2015
Physical Appearance
In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley shows that appearance does not represent internal character by the use
of contrasting characters. Shelley uses the characters of the monster and Victor to show that looks don
t determine your personality. Physical appearance is related to internal character due to the fact that
people judge on looks before anything else. Social media, making people more concerned with their
looks, has influenced the importance of appearance. Different studies show that people pick their
friends and spouses based on appearance. Physical appearance is not an indicator of character, but still
the acceptance of someone who looks different lies in the eyes of judgmental people.
In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, physical appearance plays an immense role in the way characters are
treated. Many would believe that a beautiful exterior represents a beautiful soul, but that is not the
case. Victor creates a hideous monster that later becomes mistreated and judged solely on his
appearance. The monster is never given a chance by anyone besides Mr. De Lacey to show his inner
self. I am blind, and cannot judge of your countenance, but there is something in your words which
persuades me that you are sincere (Shelley 120). Since De Lacey is blind, he does not have the power
to judge the harmless monster on his appearance. He accepts the monster into his home, not running in
terror from his harsh exterior.

Familial Cardiomyopathies ( Fc )
Background: Familial Cardiomyopathies (FC) are a collection of cardiac diseases that vary vastly
genetically, and pathologically (1, 2). Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common form
of FC (2). HCM is diagnosed often with left ventricular hypertrophy without a noticeable increase in
external load and smaller ventricular cavity, but with a preserved ejection fraction (3). That is, the
percent of blood leaving the left ventricle (5) does not change. Other pathologies include interstitial
fibrosis, thickening of the media in intramural arteries, and myocytes disarray greater than 5%; which
is a hallmark of HCM (4). HCM shows variability in its penetrance, from a patient with no symptoms,
to having sudden cardiac death (SCD) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result, many patients that do not fit standard diagnostic criteria may in fact have this form of
HCM (8). This low diagnostic sensitivity can be a contributing factor to the high mortality rate of TnT
related HCM, making understanding its etiology very important. Mutations in TnT mostly seem to be
associated with changes in calcium sensitivity (10). Three mutations seem to be prevalent, each having
varying affects on calcium sensitivity. The TnT Arg278Cys (R278C) mutation, not without some
debate (15), has been found to have negligible effects on calcium handling, resulting in a relatively
better prognosis for the patient (11). TnT Phe110Ile (F110I) and Ile79Asn (I79N) mutations both show
a respective increase in calcium sensitivity (10). Their pathologies differ from most HCM in that very
little fibrosis or hypertrophy is seen (12). This is unique, as most HCM has associated fibrosis, which
results in re entrant tachycardias and possible fibrillation (13). But with I79N and associated
mutations, re entrant tachycardias have been observed in the absence of any fibrosis (14). Both the
etiology of these mutations and resulting pathology has been researched extensively in murine and
porcine models (14, 15). The I79N, R278C, and F110I mutations were first identified and
characterized by Watkins et al. (16). Families exhibiting HCM had their DNA sequenced and, using
statistical analyses, polymorphisms were

Abortion Pro Life Research Paper
Rose Willis 3 13 15 English Abortion: A Call of Help for Life Abortion was outlawed in the eighteenth
century, and legalized in the nineteenth century. Ever since the Supreme Court legalized abortion,
more than hundreds of abortions are performed daily. Abortion is a constant debate among pro life and
pro choice. Not everybody believes or agrees with the same point of view. People argue pro life or pro
choice, if it is murder or not, however, an abortion ends the pregnancy before giving birth thus ending
the life of a living unborn child. Pro life supporters believe abortion is murdering a child. They
suggest other alternatives for the life of the child. A fetus is living as soon as it is conceived.
Therefore, it is killing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They believe that since it is the woman s body, it is her choice. In the pro choice argument, the group
says it is safer for teens to have an abortion than to give birth because teens are not yet completely
developed to have a baby. Teenage girls are not ready to physically give birth to their child. Their
bodies need to mature before being able to give birth to a baby safely (Durrett, 18). Raising a baby is
too hard for teens because they often are not yet prepared. Teenage girls, still have an education to
finish and a future to plan. They are not financially prepared to have a baby and will rely too much on
parents or guardians. When an abortion has failed or even thought about, there will be hurt. Pro choice
supporters believe unhealthy relationships will occur between mother and child because of being
unwanted. The baby will feel unloved and worthless and that will be key for the relationship going
down the gutter. There will be too much conflict for both of them to handle and this will cause a
terrible life for both the child and mother. They believe there should be no debate over what someone
else should do with their own body. Another difference is whether the fetus is a baby. Pro choice say
the fetus is not a person yet, therefore it is not murder. A baby is a person when it takes its first breath
outside of the womb. When a baby is no longer attached to its mom and living and breathing on its
own is when life begins for the baby. Meaning they do not believe obviously that the fetus is a baby.

Sigonella Diver Scenarios
In response to the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, the United States strengthened its presence
abroad. Sigonella, Italy is the hub for all Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) diving operations.
At that time, I was a member of the United States Naval Reserves; I served as an Explosive Ordnance
Disposal Diver. I was deployed to Sigonella from November 2001 September 2002. There, part of my
duties included my service as an EOD diving supervisor. A diving supervisor has the responsibility for
protecting all divers, including their safety in the water, transporting them to a call for service or
operation, and evaluating, creating, and when necessary, implementing emergency action plans. Upon
arrival in Sigonella, I was reviewing the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to the location of the military installation, divers are usually transported to the ocean by boat, to a
dive location usually 30 90 minutes away. If a diver was stricken, a helicopter was supposed to
transport the rescue team, who, once arrived would swim 50 100 yards to the diver, placing him in a
rescue stretcher, and towing him back to the boat. This process alone could take approximately 30
minutes. The helicopter transporting the rescue team meanwhile would hover overhead. In turn the
rescue diver and stricken diver, are at risk because the rescue diver is attempting to swim with rescue
stretcher in tow through rough waters. Assuming they are both able to get onto the boat safely, the
rotor wash is still endangering not only the victim and rescue crew, but everyone on the boat as well,
because the rough water could cause the boat to capsize. Under these conditions the stretcher could
not be safely lifted to the helicopter. If the boat did not capsize, it would transport the crew back to
base 30 90 minutes away, prolonging the wait time before the diver could receive medical attention.
Under that policy the rescue process could take anywhere from 90 minutes to 3 hours, depending on
how far they were from base, to get the stricken diver medical attention there. Time is critical,
especially if the stricken diver experiences a medical emergency like a heart

My Favorite Books
I cannot remember a time in my life when I didn t love reading and writing. My favorite books during
my early childhood mostly consisted of Dr. Seuss books. I spent hours reading with my parents and on
my own, we read a book before bed every night. When I was in Kindergarten I wrote my first book,
about bunny rabbits. I spent hours making two copies of my picture book about what I believed
bunnies did. My older sister became my first critic when she told me that my book was stupid and
childish. I remember sobbing when a glass of water spilled on them and smudged the marker I had
used to create them. My mom managed to salvage the books and they re still in a box somewhere.
After Dr. Seuss and P.D Eastman; I graduated to Junie B. Jones , The Boxcar Children , and Magic
Tree House. I read nearly all of the books in those series, with my favorite being The Boxcar Children.
At the suggestion of my older sister, I read Suzanne Collins Gregor the Overlander series and loved it.
My sister and I fell in love with Violet Rains Almost Got Struck by Lightning and Everything on a
Waffle around the time I was going into middle school. I read those books about fifteen times each
and can still describe Violet Rains Almost Got Struck by Lightning perfectly. Around the same time, I
read, Out of my Mind by Sharon M. Draper and was completely blown away. That book changed my
perspective on people with special needs and I m now extremely active with the special

Plato s The Nicomachean Ethics
In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle presents the reader with a guide to living a good life. He claims
the highest good is happiness, and the way to obtain it is through the use of reason. In order to better
comprehend Aristotle s ideas regarding happiness, we will explain his conception of eudaimonia and
excellence through rational activity. Then, we will examine this concept of rational activity in relation
to the aristotelian concept of self sufficiency. At the end of the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle offers a
seemingly divergent point of view. However, we will argue that these final reflections on happiness
describe the best way to experience a good life.
All individuals are in search of some good. Every one of our actions, skills and choices has an aim,
and this aim is defined as the good of that particular activity (1094a1 3). While these activities are
distinct, some may be classed into broader faculties. For example, ethics, metaphysics, aesthetics,
logic and epistemology are all activities that fall under the more general faculty of philosophy. As a
result, the individual ends of the former all work towards the superior good of the latter. (1094a9 16).
However, such ends are incomplete they are not pursued for their own sake, but for the sake of another
superior goal. As we examine the categorization of activity, is important to distinguish between
instrumental value and intrinsic value. An action or skill with instrumental value is not pursued for its
own

Pharmaceutical Industry and Merck
Merck, being on one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world today, came from a meek
beginning and still encounters many problems today while trying to maintain a lead amongst its
competition. While being looked at as a research and development driven company, Merck now has to
go beyond R D to stay competitive in the pharmaceutical industry. Attracting talent to work for the
company has never been a problem for Merck, but the bigger question was whether or not this talent
would be able to keep Merck s profits at a maximum and keep developing drugs in the pipeline.
Through the late 80 s to early 90 s, Merck was able to boast profits and sales through biochemistry
drugs that were seen as breakthrough drugs in this new market. ... Show more content on

Weaknesses:
Although Merck has encountered success, the organization has confronted weaknesses and
disappointments. One weakness that Merck has confronted is the duration of the drug development,
the value of the drug being evaluated and the length of the FDA application for drug approval. For
example, of the 5,000 molecules that are discovered, only couple of hundred are investigated, only one
enters into the market and only a third becomes a marketable success (Gilbert and Sarkar 3). A drug
development time may take on average over 15 years and expenditure R D total costs of about $880
million (Gilbert and Sarkar 2) (Exhibit 3). The length for and FDA application is at least 100,000
pages, which details the potential drug s usage, production, formula and labeling. Another weakness
with Merck is that too much power is given to scientists in decision making of candidate drugs. The
MRL was somewhat the main decision makers in organizing the drug development process including
final say on whether Phase V or post evaluation drug studies could be used. MRL, at one time, did not
show a lot of emphasis on Phase V and wanted to move on after Phase III. Figures like Per Wold
Olsen, President of Human Health Europe, had to fight to get approval and funding for Phase V
research. The third weakness is the inadequacies and lack of communication between marketing and
research. For

Racial Segregation In Major League Baseball
Introduction
Back in the day, American baseball excluded players of African American descent from Major League
Baseball and also in its lower Minor Leagues up until 1947. Racial segregation in professional
baseball was called a gentleman s agreement an arrangement or understanding which is based upon
the trust of both or all parties, rather than being legally binding because there was no written
agreement even at the highest level of organized baseball, the major leagues. But there was a vote in
the minor league in 1887 that was against allowing new contracts with African American players
within its league which sent a powerful strike that eventually led to the disappearance of African
Americans from the sport s other minor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Steamy air soaked Fianna s clothes as she and Tan tak kle ah tussled their way closer to the brink. A

Marine Insurance
INTRODUCTION
Insurance is a form of risk management in which the insured transfers the cost of potential loss to
another entity in exchange for monetary compensation known as the premium.
Insurance allows individuals, businesses and other entities to protect themselves against significant
potential losses and financial hardship at a reasonably affordable rate. We say significant because if
the potential loss is small, then it doesn t make sense to pay a premium to protect against the loss.
After all, you would not pay a monthly premium to protect against a Rs. 1000 loss because this would
not be considered a financial hardship for most.
In one form or another, we all own insurance. Whether its auto, medical, liability, disability or ... Show

Insuring anything other than human life is called general insurance. Examples are insuring property
like house and belongings against fire and theft or vehicles against accidental damage or theft. Injury
due to accident or hospitalization for illness and surgery can also be insured. Your liabilities to others
arising out of the law can also be insured and is compulsory in some cases like motor third party
insurance.
General insurance companies have willingly catered to these increasing demands and have offered a
plethora of insurance covers that almost cover anything under the sun.
Any insurance other than Life Insurance falls under the classification of General Insurance. It
comprises of: * Insurance of property against fire, theft, burglary, terrorism, natural disasters etc *
Personal insurance such as Accident Policy, Health Insurance and liability insurance which covers
legal liabilities. * Errors and Omissions Insurance for professionals, credit insurance etc. * Policy
covers such as coverage of machinery against breakdown or loss or damage during the transit. *
Policies that provide marine insurance covering goods in transit by sea, air, railways, waterways and
road and cover the hull of ships. * Insurance of motor vehicles against damages or accidents and theft
All these above mentioned form a major chunk of non life insurance business.

Mongeon also claims that the best part of her job is being there every day with the residents, and that
they make it worth coming to work every day. Heather adds that the families can make things a little
tough. According to Mongeon the only time that it gets pretty difficult, is when the resident is in a
higher level of care than the facility can give and the family is in denial. Heather was asked if she
believes there are any social issues for an assisted living home, and immediately said yes. She states
that the residents that are higher class look down on the ones that are maybe more lower class. She
ostensibly said that there are quite a few cliques such as the gossipers, the bullies, the higher class, the
judgmental ones, and of course the nosey ones.
Heather stated that an assisted living home and a nursing home are completely different. An assisted
living home provides some help, but the residents must be able to still ambulate on their own and bath
mostly on their own with some assistance. As for a nursing home, faculty helps with most of the
residents needs. They help with toileting, bathing, feeding, and walking. Nursing homes are a high
care facility. Assisted living homes have only three types of services, independent living, which they
are still able to do everything on their own; then there is assisted living in which the resident may need
some assistance with bathing or walking; finally, there is enhanced living

Comparison Of Gatsby And Trimalchio
A reader s understanding of the eponymous central character of F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby
cannot be considered complete until said character is compared to him whose name was the second
choice for the title of the novel: Petronius Trimalchio. Fitzgerald, by comparing Gatsby and
Trimalchio, critiques the excesses of high society in 1920s America, although there remains a
redeeming element in Gatsby not shared by the other bourgeoisie. Both Gatsby and Trimalchio
possess opulent wealth, and each one leverages said wealth in orgiastic parties and banquets the excess
of which shows both Petronius and Fitzgerald s disdain for the decadence of the plutocrats of their
respective eras. Gatsby has his food set up such that spiced baked hams crowded against salads of
harlequin designs and pastry pigs and turkeys bewitched to a dark gold and his alcohol consists of gins
and liquors and . . . cordials so long forgotten that most of his female guests were too young to know
one from another (Fitzgerald 44). Fitzgerald s description of such a display of wealth may seem

The Benefits of Alternative Medicine over Conventional Medicine
I used to be like millions of Americans, thinking: I m too busy to research alternative health care. I
don t even have time to slow down enough to think about it. I know I don t eat right; but there s not
enough time to make healthy food. I m not even sure what is healthy; the experts seem to come up
with new findings that counter previous ones at least once a week. I rely on my doctor to keep me
abreast of any problems; and when one does come up, he has a quick fix for me: antibiotics, anti
depressants, tension relievers, and pills to counter the side effects (like stomach upset, restlessness)
caused by the others. I ve heard of other holistic health ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most important aspect of my learning is I know that if I raise my son to eat healthy and know how
to take care of himself, he will not have to go through the same difficult learning and unlearning
process that I did. If he prevents the common ailments, as I do now, he won t rely on those quick fixes
as much (which tend to be more harmful in the long run). And most importantly, he won t become an
experimental consumer who is tried out on a variety of drugs (like anti depressants that are so popular
today), in the mean time becoming dependent on them.
You and your family also need to find out about alternatives to conventional medicine. I m not saying
to turn your back on conventional medicine all together; just don t rely on it solely. What everyone can
and should do is be able to take the best from a variety of methods, in anything, but especially
concerning health matters. The Chinese have a proverb: The methods used by one man may be faulty,
the methods used by two men will be better (Monte 29). After hearing that, who could dispute it?
Well, maybe the self interested drug companies who want to keep us dependent on their pills so they
can continue to grow.
I sympathize with everyone who leads a hectic, fast paced life. I understand why there never seems to
be enough time to do the necessary things, let alone the things on the to do someday list. However, if

Madness Theme In Hamlet
Hamlet s Madness
There are a variety of different themes that are shown within the play Hamlet . These themes vary
from death to obsession and also betrayal, all of which contribute in some manner to encourage
Hamlet s madness. In every theme, the audience can somewhat relate on a level both back in the day
and in contemporary times as death, obsession and betrayal are common entities, well known today
and will continue to be known and understood until the end of time. There are many themes that
reoccur, all of which relate back to Hamlet s madness, specifically including death, obsession, and
betrayal. It has been rumored that Hamlet, the play in this case, is a perfect combo of internal and
external forces. Hamlet experiences turmoil, based not only on his inner mental state, but also on the
external circumstances of both the murder of his father committed jointly by his mother and the
constant spying on him by Claudius and Polonius. In this case, Hamlet mostly likely is just suffering
from some mild paranoia..
Hamlet seem to think about suicide throughout the course of the play more than the average person
would. Hamlet is trying to avoid and not to be subjected to the inevitable heartache that is simply a
part of life, and by wishing to not have to tolerate pain, shows why his wish is to die. At the end,
Hamlet has apparently made the decision that he would rather die, but if only he were not afraid of
what would come after death. This also reflects Hamlet s depression in that he would constantly think
about death and suicide. The question remains as to whether or not this is madness. It is possible that
because he debats about suicide in a very real and serious way, it could possibly be thought of as
madness as it is not a thought that any normal person would ever have. Instead, a normal person could
see issues in life that need to be dealt with instead of run away from which could have been what
Hamlet was doing/trying to do. Madness is all over this possibility of death because most individuals
will never truly contemplate taking their own life in any normal circumstances.
Hamlet can be said to be truly mentally ill in some cases. At the same time, he resents and hates his
mother for killing his

Genetics And Biotechnology And Its Effect On The World...
The definition of biotechnology, according to the fourth addition biology book from BJU press, states
that Biotechnology is the use of technology to enhance living organisms and processes.
Their are many aspects of biotechnoogy including cloning, genetic engineering, stem cell technology,
gene therapy and genetically modified plants and food. I will be splitting this paper off into sections
by these specific aspects in order to learn more about genetics and biotechnology and its effect on the
world around us. So let s dive in. Section 1. Cloning
There are three common types of clones:natural clones, artificial clones and last but not least human
clones.
Natural cloning occurs when animals without man s intervention create a native, unaffected genetic
copy of themselves as their young. This occurs by asexually reproduction, a process in which certain
animals don t need two parents in order to create a young, but can make sperm themselves. Organisms
that are multicellular can reproduce by processes such as: fragmentation, budding or produce spores
from asexual reproduction from natural clones. Natural clones make an exact genetic copy of
themselves except in the fetus stage. The organisms that can make a natural clone are some jellyfish,
some insects and some worms. Unlike most animals that are more common to us such as fish, birds
and mammals reproduce sexually making them inapplicable for natural cloning. Unlike the animal
kingdom, plants can easily make clones and

process planning, organizing, leading, and controlling? Trader Joe s demonstrates planning by
intending to carry unique products at a low cost within a fun, relaxing environment. Their organizing
skills were apparent due to their approach to find unusual foods from around the world, contract
directly with manufacturers, label their products with catchy phrases and by maintaining a small stock
of each product. Their leadership was exemplified by hiring employees with job skills such as being

personally listen to their employers give them instruction and feedback when they re half way across

employee morale. Performance effectiveness and efficiency are impacted negatively. Also, considering
the fact that the company as a whole remains very quiet and do not give interviews or spend much of
anything on advertising, they run the risk of being forgotten. Word of mouth remains prevalent for this
company at this time, but that might not always be the case. Problem Solving: First of all, I m thrown

Essay On Coach Omar Dupree
Omar Dupree works in a school, but he s not a teacher. He can be a fun person to joke around with,
but when it come down to doing work, he expects his players and students to be focused. Coach Omar
is not a fancy person. He is a tall black man with a small patch of gray on the left side, but he s young,
just 33 years old. Unlike teachers that have to wear professional clothes, Omar wears sport clothing
because he is a coach.
When he finished high school, Omar applied to 6 colleges: Goucher, Elizabethtown, Seton Hall,
University of MD Baltimore County, University of Maryland, and University of Durham.

Robot Vs. Loftus Robots
Recent technological innovations have made technology more efficient within the workplace. From
simple software scripts that are able to robotize a wide range of digital workflow process to
sophisticated robots capable of performing an ever growing number of physical tasks. Automation

If We Are Not Reading
If we are not reading carefully, it s easy to move from chapter 27 to 28, simply presume that Job
continued to speak, and sail right on into chapters 29 and beyond. That s especially true if our reading
is guided (as it often is) by headings in whatever translation we are reading. The ESV, for example,
shapes our perception with Job Continues: Where is Wisdom? at the beginning of chapter 28. The
NASB implies the same idea Job Tells of Earth s Treasures. Likewise, the NKJV reads Job s
Discourse on Wisdom. The NIV has no break at all between chapters 27 and 28, suggesting that Job
simply continued. Nonetheless, it seems best to understand chapter 28 as an interlude during which the
reading/listening audience was granted breathing space. There had been words in profusion,
overwhelming in sheer volume to say nothing of tone. Thus, time for silent contemplation was
essential. That might also imply Job himself stopped speaking into the drama. Where may wisdom be
found? We might ask why inquire about wisdom at this point? Hasn t the disputation been about
justice and righteousness? If anything, Job might have been asking where is God to be found? Is this
another hint that they had all missed something critical? Is it a preparation for the specific wisdom
focus in God s discourses? Whoever uttered these verses, their contents are rich. The metaphors send
us far underground into the darkest mine, back to the heart of the precious metals exchange, and

Consequently, the alliance has boosted profitability, market capitalization and sales in 192 for both

from synergies The making of the alliance was motivated by the enthusiasm of Ghosn to develop
potential synergies, where both firms maintain their operational freedom. The foundation of the
alliance focuses on the need for the negotiation of a formal equity joint venture because Renault and
Nissan must evaluate their partners equities, capabilities and willingness to cooperate before selecting

Hinduism And Buddhism Similarities
Buddhism and Hinduism are two religions that are known to share many similarities and contrasting
differences. Both religions are thought to have originated in the Ganges culture of Northern India
around 500 BC (Gartzke and Kristian, 57). Some religious scholars argue that Hinduism and
Buddhism share a long but peculiar relationship which is comparable to that of Christianity and
Judaism. Despite the existence of a strong rivalry between the followers of Buddha and the Siva, both
the religions, Buddhism and Hinduism have influenced each other in many ways (Gartzke and

With many Hindu texts professing on the eternal nature of the soul, atman is said to be trapped within
a cycle of rebirth (Saraswathi, 46). Both reincarnation and Karma ideas are merged to stipulate that the
thoughts and actions within an individual s present life will play an important role in determining the
condition of soul s future existences. There is, therefore, a cause and effect of every action. The
motivation of religious and moral activities in Hinduism is to accumulate good Karma so as to free
oneself from baneful material thus liberating the soul from the cycle of rebirth (Fisher and Rinehart,
77). According to the idea of rebirth, death only relates to the physical body but the soul continues and
is reborn into another body. The continuing worldly existence, the samsara, thus refers to the cycle of
repeated births. As already mentioned, reincarnation is dictated by the law of Karma. According to
Hinduism, Karma is the law of cosmos leading to the absolute reality (Fisher and Rinehart, 78). The
doctrine of Karma sets the world of justice making every action to have an outcome. Renouncing the
worldly life is an important aspect in spiritual liberation and entails embodying Hinduism s Dharma
ideals so as to build good Karma that will prevent one from coming back as a lower class Hindu or

Women had very little opportunities before Title IX existed, especially in sports. They were not able to
participate in any organized sports because they were only designed for men. Women only played
sports or participated in any physical activities recreationally and without rules. In the past, many

Watch on the Rhine or The Battle of the Bulge as the American called it, was the Germans last major
counter offensive in World War II to push the allied force out of northern France and into northwestern
Belgium. The fighting force in the battle was 250,000 Germans which included 14 German infantry
divisions guarded by four Panzer tank divisions against a mere 80,000 Americans. The first assault
happened on December 16, 1944, on a thinly guarded 85 mile stretch from Echternach in the south to
Monschau in the north in the Ardennes Mountains, called the Ghost Front. For Adolf Hitler and the

September to December 7th, Hitler and his most trusted generals worked up the plan for the Ardennes

renamed it, Watch on the Rhine. High commanding officers were read into the operation. By the end
of December 7th, the first load of supplies was loaded on trains and on the way to the Ardennes to
ensure all the supplies they would need for the operation were stockpiled and on December 11th the
buildup was complete. Hitler moved his headquarter near a castle in Ziegenburg so he was about to
keep a close, personal eye on the operation and set the date of December 16th for the attack to begin.
Hitler briefed his division commanders himself and concluded by saying, This battle is to decide
whether we shall live or die. I want all my soldiers to fight hard and without pity. The battle must be
fought with brutality and all resistance must be broken in a wave of terror. In the most serious hour of

The Power Of Solar Energy
Power Use
Solar power or what is commonly referred to as solar energy is the energy from the sun that is
converted into thermal or electrical energy. This form of energy is the cleanest and most abundant
since it is almost everywhere in the world. It is also renewable and hence through modern
technological advancement it be harnessed into a wide range of uses such as electricity generation,
lighting or indoor use, water heating, machine driving and other commercial as well as industrial
applications. There are many more other benefits that come along with solar energy use apart from
just the application, such as the environmental friendliness, cheapness in terms of production and use,
and the value it adds on a business or a home.
The U.S, just like any other industrialized country in the world, has been facing major power
shortages due to the increased electricity demands for both industrial and home use. As the number of
industries and companies increases in the country, electricity demand also increases. This implies that
energy sources have to also increase. Most of the electricity is produced through the use of steam
turbines powered by fossil fuels such as coal or petroleum and water in boilers, about one fifth of the
energy is produced from nuclear power and the rest (only 13%) comes from renewable energy sources
for example hydropower, wind power, biomass, solar power, and geothermal power (Fahrenbruch, et
al., 54)
The country needs to invest more in renewable energy

On the Origin of Spain s current Economic Crisis
The economy of Spain has taken a downturn in 2011 since the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
Unlike the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, where Spain was a global empire, modern Spain is facing
a very stagnant economy. Spain s unemployment rate reached a record of 27 percent in 2011. This

Spain s historical glory did not prevent it from current economic crisis. Spain was the first global

Spanish empire became the most prominent superpower, dominating most of the world. This allowed
Spanish people at the time to enjoy a cultural golden age during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries;
but this glorious moment did not last longer to prevent Spain s current economic downfall. Despite
suffering an economic downturn, Spanish empire remained the largest in the world until the eighteenth
centuries.

Groundwater Pumping In Florida
Groundwater Pumping The state of Florida is very dependent on groundwater, primarily for public and
agricultural supply. Indeed, the largest source of drinking water in Florida is groundwater from the
state s massive aquifer system; approximately ninety percent of the state s drinking water is extracted
from groundwater sources (Marella, 2004). According to Marella (2004), Between 1970 and 2000,
total freshwater withdrawals increased for public supply by 176 percent and for agricultural self
supplied by 87 percent (p. 1). As discussed previously, a growing population correlates with an
increase in the demand for groundwater resources. Groundwater is currently being pumped out of
Florida s aquifers faster than the state s abundant rainfall can refill them (Barnett, 2007, p.2). The
excessive pumping of groundwater can create subsurface voids because of the lowering of the water
table, which can lead to the development of sinkholes due to gravity and a loss of fluid pressure
support (Tihansky, 1999, p. 132). Waltham et al (2005) contend, The most widespread cause of
induced sinkholes is any form of water table decline, where the vertical drainage is quite literally

first key characteristic is the understanding of the strategic position of an organization, followed by the

development of strategy. The level of technology and preferences concerning materials changed over

Bigger companies entered the sector with advanced electronic games. Thus they needed to reconsider

the rapid change of the environment, difficulties in financial control and logistics and longer lead
times needed for running in new activities such as the new LEGOLAND parks were responsible for
their fluctuating profit. Moreover the customers are an essential external feature. The customer needs
changed from traditional to innovative which is reflected in the success of bigger companies with
electronic games. It turned out that younger customers expect more of their toys then before and that
the using time of traditional bricks decreased. For that reason LEGO came up with play themes which

Analyzing Virtue Ethics
My purpose of this essay is to explain and analyze virtue ethics. According to virtue ethics, in order to
live an ethical life, one must possess the right character traits, which are virtues, and as a result, they
will have the appropriate moral character. While virtue ethics does have many strengths to it, such as
that it places a central role on character, I have to disagree with this theory because it is too difficult to
identify which virtues we should acquire. Unlike most ethical theories, virtue ethics understands
morality in terms of good and bad character rather than the rightness or wrongness of actions. It tells
us not how we should act but how we ought to act. Virtue ethics emphasizes the role of character and
virtue rather than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One weakness of virtue ethics is that it is not action guiding. Other theories rely on one rule or
principle that offer a clear direction on what to do. As long as someone knows the principles, they can
apply them to practical situations. Virtue ethics fails to give any help on how we should behave and
lacks focus when it comes to determining actions that are morally acceptable from the ones that need
to be avoided. Instead, it focuses more on the qualities an individual needs to improve in order to
become a good person. Another problem with virtue ethics is that it is hard to determine what traits are
virtues and whether they are so in all circumstances. Virtuous characteristics can be performed even
when the actions carried out are unethical. For example, courage is often regarded as a virtue, but can
there not be courageous thefts? It seems that a theft could exhibit courage while robbing a store, yet
everyone usually agrees that stealing is morally wrong. There are also so many different opinions and
perspectives of people that come from diverse cultures and societies. These aspects can lead to
differences on what is morally right or wrong for people and make it hard to identify virtues. Are there
really any traits that are universal? Finally, virtue ethics can be all about luck. The path to becoming
virtue is difficult and many things outside our control can go wrong. The right education, influences,
or habits can help someone develop virtue, while the wrong influences can encourage vice. Some
people will be lucky and receive the help and encouragement they need, but others will not. Therefore,
it is not fair to reward the virtuous and blame the vicious for something they could not

Mary Warren The Crucible Essay
Morals and morality is a big theme throughout the whole play, people are like a tree in a windstorm

which character holds on to them the most: Mary Warren the young girl, Reverend John Hale of
Beverly, or John Proctor the farmer? From the beginning to the end of the play people constantly
change, but what do they really believe in?
Mary Warren is introduced in the first act of the play. She is described as, seventeen, a subservient,

means she can be easily persuaded. From the beginning. Mary wanted them to confess saying that she

The Lemon Test, which was created in a case called Lemon V. Kurtzman, consists of three prongs
(Speich 275). They are that governmental action be supported by a secular purpose, that it not have the
principal or primary effect of advancing or inhibiting religion, and that it not foster an excessive
governmental entanglement with religion. (qtd. in Conkle). In other words, the first prong requires the
court to question the intent of the government or group in charge of creating the policy; the second
prong asks the court to determine the result of the policy and its effects on religion, and the last prong
asks the court to not complicate the dynamic of the church and the state (Speich 275). The
Endorsement test is used after the first two prongs of the lemon test have been verified. First occurring
in Lynch V. Donnelly, the Endorsement test states that the government cannot endorse, favor, promote,
or prefer any religious belief or practice (Speich 277). The test asks the judges if the policy in question
merely looks like it endorses religion. The Coercion test, which is sometimes used instead of the
lemon test such as in Lee v. Weisman case, asks if the policy tricks members of the minority or
dissenting religion into participating (Schweitzer; Speich 278).

Theme Of Courage In Beowulf
In the epic poem, Beowulf, the main character, Beowulf, can be seen as one of the most prime and
pure examples of an epic hero due to his almighty courage. What is an epic hero without courage?
Well, not a epic hero at all. Beowulf has the superhuman strength, glory and fame, but he cannot
embody those characteristics if he does not have courage to drive him primarily. Initially, the reader
can get a taste of Beowulf epicness when he heavily boasts about his battle at sea with Breca. Due to
jealousy, Unferth calls him out for his loss in the thrashing waves, yet Beowulf shows no
embarrassment and even exploits Unferth for his lack of braveness as he claims, The fact is, Unferth,
if you were truly as keen and courageous as you claim to be, Grendel would never have gotten away
with such unchecked atrocity, attacks on your king, havoc in Heorot and horror everywhere (Heaney
590 594). He makes it clear that no one can deteriorate or match the courage that he beholds. While he
the battle is brought up, Beowulf states that Often, for undaunted courage, fate spares a man that it has
not already marked (572 573). This is inferring that if one hasn t died yet due to fate, they can
continue living their life through courage. This foreshadows the mindset of Beowulf and how he holds
the theory of bravery close in his morals. As Beowulf goes on to explain this rigorous battle, he claims
that not only did he swim for seven days in full armor, but also nonchalantly slayed nine sea

Distorted Reality In Katherine Mansfield s Miss Brill
Katherine Mansfield was born in 1888 in New Zealand, and passed away the year of 1923 in France.
She moved to London as a young woman and began writing short stories. In her story Miss Brill, a
lonesome, elderly lady spends her day watching people in a local public garden. Miss Brill was
unnoticed by the people that visited the garden, but she managed to convince herself that she was an
amazing actress and the people around her were just part of her world. Her fantasy is quickly crushed
by remarks made by two people in the garden towards the end of the story. Events following the
incident in the park make it clear that something changed in Miss Brill at the end of the story. The
theme of this story is a distorted reality, and Miss Brill was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This leaves some people alone, friendless, and left to create their own sense of existence. Miss Brill is
one of these people, she is distant from the world and does not really belong anywhere. People acted
as if she did not exist, and for the most part did not speak to her. She became very skilled at
eavesdropping on other people s conversations without letting them know she was listening. She was
so accustomed to listening to others and observing, she forgot that is was normal to engage in
conversations with others around her. Although Miss Brill is an English teacher, it is clear that she
does not share things with people in her life such as her students. One can assume that there is not a
real connection between Miss Brill and her students. While she believes going to the park is like a big
play in which she is very important, she still fails to share this information with her class. The
relationship with the old man that she reads to at the park four times a week is almost non existent.
She insinuates that if he were to die it would not matter to her. She thinks she is an actress reading to
an old gentlemen, but in reality she is just a school teacher reading to a man that is sleeping. Miss Brill
seems to only have a real connection with noone other than

Avatar Effect
What I call the Avatar effect plays a pervasive (if unconscious) role on the road. Basically, it comes
down to moral hazard: people are more likely to take risks when they feel they are shielded from the
consequences of their actions. Especially when they feel detached from danger via avatars or proxies.
Like Jake Sully (the crippled main character of Avatar), who uses a super expensive Na vi human
hybrid, to transport himself to a place where he can make a fortune (for someone else, and a (relative)
pittance for himself); people conduct themselves in a manner that corresponds to their perceived
risk/reward ratio.
Jake was quite emboldened by the fact that he himself was not at risk of dying when he was going
about Pandora in his Na vi Avatar. There was only a small sense of fiscal preservation in his actions.
Obviously, drivers are not as reckless as Jake, for whom death was taken ... Show more content on

Drivers subconsciously feel almost anonymous and essentially invincible once inside their cars. The
rolling metal machines take all the punishment, while protecting all passengers inside.
That is why people do not mind cutting strangers off in a manner that makes them have to slam on
their brakes to avoid collision. The way selfish people see it, the worst possible outcome of that is a
fender bender that gives them a palpable excuse for being late to work.
They (like Jake) are also held aback by the fear of losing such an expensive product. Granted, much of
that fear is mitigated by insurance companies (straight out of pandora s box) who are now brazenly
siphoning resources from people (though not the Na vi s unobtainium (but only because they are
fictional)).
People drive as reckless as they do because they feel safe in their automotive avatars. They have seen
countless crash test dummies walk away from brutal collisions of all kinds, with impacts emanating
from every

Daphnia Research Paper
Copper is a naturally occurring element that can be found in all plants and animals. A certain amount
of copper is necessary for health, and the human body has developed a way to maintain the proper
level of copper in it (Minnesota). Even so, large concentrations of copper, and general long term
exposure, can have a negative impact on the body. Symptoms include stomachaches, vomiting,
diarrhea, liver and kidney damage, and even death (Lenntech). Exposure to copper comes from many
areas, but the most common one is through the water. Copper is commonly found in plumbing pipes,
which can lead to high levels of copper in drinking water and fresh water sources due to erosion.
Lakes and streams are also treated with copper to prevent algae overgrowth (Group). Copper
concentrations that exceed 20 micrograms per gram can be toxic to any living thing (Solomon).
Copper binds easily to organic matter, which means it levels are rather high in animals that can filter
materials from water; although biomagnification doesn t occur in the food web. In terms of aquatic
organisms and ecosystems, copper is one of the most toxic metals, and aquatic organisms tend to be
more sensitive to its effects. Daphnia are normally used to test potentially harmful substances in water
supplies, and are easy to handle and monitor. This experiment was designed around this fact, ... Show

As this happened, a clean glass slide was placed on the microscope stand in preparation for the
Daphnia. Once in the solution, the Daphnia was removed after five (5) seconds and placed onto a glass
slide along with a drop of solution. The Daphnia didn t need to be in the solution for long as it would
still be affected by it while on the slide. The proper adjustments were made on the microscope until
the Daphnia s heart was well in view, which was often difficult as it kept moving

Hypochondria Argumentative Essay
Hypochondria, most have heard this word before, whether on a television show or even in comedic
jokes. But, what is hypochondria? Most people who have heard of this illness disassociate it from its
definition. Hypochondria is when a healthy person is obsessively worried about their health, usually
believing they are ill with something they are not. Although, people who are seriously afflicted with
this mental sickness can develop other symptoms, and are called hypochondriacs.
To begin with, there are quite a few symptoms of hypochondria that a person may utilize to find
whether or not they, or another person, suffers from this disorder. To start, a person may develop
severe anxiety, to the point to where it incredibly influences their daily life in a debilitating way. Of
course, the more obvious characteristic is the irrational belief that the person, suspected to be a
hypochondriac, is constantly afflicted with an injury or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People can choose to undergo psychotherapy, behavioral stress management therapy, and exposure
therapy. Therapy can help a person suffering from hypochondria learn different ways on how to cope,
or even ultimately overcome it. Therapy could even address underlying issues that initially began the
sickness. There aren t many medications that doctors prescribe, because that could potentially promote
the disease. However, doctors can recommend anti depressants that may help with a patient s anxiety.
In conclusion, hypochondria, despite its lighthearted reputation, should not be taken less seriously
than any other mental illness. Hypochondria is just as real as any other disease, affecting about nine
percent of the population. Both women and men can contract it, and age has no influence. Everyone is
at risk; the most effective way of combating hypochondria is education. Educating yourself and others
about this illness could possibly prevent hypochondria from

Indifference By Elie Wiesel
There is no question as to whether or not an author can influence their reader s emotions. It is
something that most people experience at some point or another through fictional novels or a
biography, or a speech. The question is how do they do it and why. Through their use of stories and
word choice authors are able to heighten emotional intensity in order to manipulate the reader into
feeling certain emotions. In a paper or speech where authors are trying to persuade, authors create
these emotions because their audience is more likely to accept their argument and want to bring
change if they are emotionally invested in something. One particular author that is very good at this is
Elie Wiesel. In his speech, Perlis of Indifference, he describes his experience during the holocaust. He
is able to evoke emotions of remorse, and guilt from the audience by telling his story with vivid
details, and sharing his definition of indifference with the audience. He does this so we understand
that indifference is a bad thing, and it is something that we should try to end. When people think about
being indifferent to something they would think of it as something that they do not care about,
something that is harmless. While Wiesel may agree that being indifferent means not caring he would
not agree that being indifferent is harmless.
He states, Indifference after all is more dangerous than anger and hatred. Anger at times can be
creative... But indifference is never creative...

  • 2. Physical Appearance Of Mary Shelley s Frankenstein Kayla Caputo Ms. Schindler English IV 23 March 2015 Physical Appearance In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley shows that appearance does not represent internal character by the use of contrasting characters. Shelley uses the characters of the monster and Victor to show that looks don t determine your personality. Physical appearance is related to internal character due to the fact that people judge on looks before anything else. Social media, making people more concerned with their looks, has influenced the importance of appearance. Different studies show that people pick their friends and spouses based on appearance. Physical appearance is not an indicator of character, but still the acceptance of someone who looks different lies in the eyes of judgmental people. In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, physical appearance plays an immense role in the way characters are treated. Many would believe that a beautiful exterior represents a beautiful soul, but that is not the case. Victor creates a hideous monster that later becomes mistreated and judged solely on his appearance. The monster is never given a chance by anyone besides Mr. De Lacey to show his inner self. I am blind, and cannot judge of your countenance, but there is something in your words which persuades me that you are sincere (Shelley 120). Since De Lacey is blind, he does not have the power to judge the harmless monster on his appearance. He accepts the monster into his home, not running in terror from his harsh exterior. ... • 3. Familial Cardiomyopathies ( Fc ) Background: Familial Cardiomyopathies (FC) are a collection of cardiac diseases that vary vastly genetically, and pathologically (1, 2). Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common form of FC (2). HCM is diagnosed often with left ventricular hypertrophy without a noticeable increase in external load and smaller ventricular cavity, but with a preserved ejection fraction (3). That is, the percent of blood leaving the left ventricle (5) does not change. Other pathologies include interstitial fibrosis, thickening of the media in intramural arteries, and myocytes disarray greater than 5%; which is a hallmark of HCM (4). HCM shows variability in its penetrance, from a patient with no symptoms, to having sudden cardiac death (SCD) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, many patients that do not fit standard diagnostic criteria may in fact have this form of HCM (8). This low diagnostic sensitivity can be a contributing factor to the high mortality rate of TnT related HCM, making understanding its etiology very important. Mutations in TnT mostly seem to be associated with changes in calcium sensitivity (10). Three mutations seem to be prevalent, each having varying affects on calcium sensitivity. The TnT Arg278Cys (R278C) mutation, not without some debate (15), has been found to have negligible effects on calcium handling, resulting in a relatively better prognosis for the patient (11). TnT Phe110Ile (F110I) and Ile79Asn (I79N) mutations both show a respective increase in calcium sensitivity (10). Their pathologies differ from most HCM in that very little fibrosis or hypertrophy is seen (12). This is unique, as most HCM has associated fibrosis, which results in re entrant tachycardias and possible fibrillation (13). But with I79N and associated mutations, re entrant tachycardias have been observed in the absence of any fibrosis (14). Both the etiology of these mutations and resulting pathology has been researched extensively in murine and porcine models (14, 15). The I79N, R278C, and F110I mutations were first identified and characterized by Watkins et al. (16). Families exhibiting HCM had their DNA sequenced and, using statistical analyses, polymorphisms were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Abortion Pro Life Research Paper Rose Willis 3 13 15 English Abortion: A Call of Help for Life Abortion was outlawed in the eighteenth century, and legalized in the nineteenth century. Ever since the Supreme Court legalized abortion, more than hundreds of abortions are performed daily. Abortion is a constant debate among pro life and pro choice. Not everybody believes or agrees with the same point of view. People argue pro life or pro choice, if it is murder or not, however, an abortion ends the pregnancy before giving birth thus ending the life of a living unborn child. Pro life supporters believe abortion is murdering a child. They suggest other alternatives for the life of the child. A fetus is living as soon as it is conceived. Therefore, it is killing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They believe that since it is the woman s body, it is her choice. In the pro choice argument, the group says it is safer for teens to have an abortion than to give birth because teens are not yet completely developed to have a baby. Teenage girls are not ready to physically give birth to their child. Their bodies need to mature before being able to give birth to a baby safely (Durrett, 18). Raising a baby is too hard for teens because they often are not yet prepared. Teenage girls, still have an education to finish and a future to plan. They are not financially prepared to have a baby and will rely too much on parents or guardians. When an abortion has failed or even thought about, there will be hurt. Pro choice supporters believe unhealthy relationships will occur between mother and child because of being unwanted. The baby will feel unloved and worthless and that will be key for the relationship going down the gutter. There will be too much conflict for both of them to handle and this will cause a terrible life for both the child and mother. They believe there should be no debate over what someone else should do with their own body. Another difference is whether the fetus is a baby. Pro choice say the fetus is not a person yet, therefore it is not murder. A baby is a person when it takes its first breath outside of the womb. When a baby is no longer attached to its mom and living and breathing on its own is when life begins for the baby. Meaning they do not believe obviously that the fetus is a baby. ... Sigonella, Italy is the hub for all Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) diving operations. At that time, I was a member of the United States Naval Reserves; I served as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Diver. I was deployed to Sigonella from November 2001 September 2002. There, part of my duties included my service as an EOD diving supervisor. Due to the location of the military installation, divers are usually transported to the ocean by boat, to a dive location usually 30 90 minutes away. If a diver was stricken, a helicopter was supposed to transport the rescue team, who, once arrived would swim 50 100 yards to the diver, placing him in a rescue stretcher, and towing him back to the boat. This process alone could take approximately 30 minutes. The helicopter transporting the rescue team meanwhile would hover overhead. In turn the rescue diver and stricken diver, are at risk because the rescue diver is attempting to swim with rescue stretcher in tow through rough waters. Assuming they are both able to get onto the boat safely, the rotor wash is still endangering not only the victim and rescue crew, but everyone on the boat as well, because the rough water could cause the boat to capsize. Under these conditions the stretcher could not be safely lifted to the helicopter. If the boat did not capsize, it would transport the crew back to base 30 90 minutes away, prolonging the wait time before the diver could receive medical attention. Under that policy the rescue process could take anywhere from 90 minutes to 3 hours, depending on how far they were from base, to get the stricken diver medical attention there. Time is critical, especially if the stricken diver experiences a medical emergency like a heart ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I spent hours reading with my parents and on my own, we read a book before bed every night. When I was in Kindergarten I wrote my first book, about bunny rabbits. I spent hours making two copies of my picture book about what I believed bunnies did. My older sister became my first critic when she told me that my book was stupid and childish. I remember sobbing when a glass of water spilled on them and smudged the marker I had used to create them. My mom managed to salvage the books and they re still in a box somewhere. After Dr. Seuss and P.D Eastman; I graduated to Junie B. Jones , The Boxcar Children , and Magic Tree House. I read nearly all of the books in those series, with my favorite being The Boxcar Children. At the suggestion of my older sister, I read Suzanne Collins Gregor the Overlander series and loved it. My sister and I fell in love with Violet Rains Almost Got Struck by Lightning and Everything on a Waffle around the time I was going into middle school. I read those books about fifteen times each and can still describe Violet Rains Almost Got Struck by Lightning perfectly. Around the same time, I read, Out of my Mind by Sharon M. • 7. Plato s The Nicomachean Ethics In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle presents the reader with a guide to living a good life. He claims the highest good is happiness, and the way to obtain it is through the use of reason. In order to better comprehend Aristotle s ideas regarding happiness, we will explain his conception of eudaimonia and excellence through rational activity. Then, we will examine this concept of rational activity in relation to the aristotelian concept of self sufficiency. At the end of the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle offers a seemingly divergent point of view. However, we will argue that these final reflections on happiness describe the best way to experience a good life. All individuals are in search of some good. Every one of our actions, skills and choices has an aim, and this aim is defined as the good of that particular activity (1094a1 3). While these activities are distinct, some may be classed into broader faculties. For example, ethics, metaphysics, aesthetics, logic and epistemology are all activities that fall under the more general faculty of philosophy. As a result, the individual ends of the former all work towards the superior good of the latter. (1094a9 16). However, such ends are incomplete they are not pursued for their own sake, but for the sake of another superior goal. As we examine the categorization of activity, is important to distinguish between instrumental value and intrinsic value. An action or skill with instrumental value is not pursued for its own ... Pharmaceutical Industry and Merck Merck, being on one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world today, came from a meek beginning and still encounters many problems today while trying to maintain a lead amongst its competition. While being looked at as a research and development driven company, Merck now has to go beyond R D to stay competitive in the pharmaceutical industry. Attracting talent to work for the company has never been a problem for Merck, but the bigger question was whether or not this talent would be able to keep Merck s profits at a maximum and keep developing drugs in the pipeline. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Weaknesses: Although Merck has encountered success, the organization has confronted weaknesses and disappointments. One weakness that Merck has confronted is the duration of the drug development, the value of the drug being evaluated and the length of the FDA application for drug approval. For example, of the 5,000 molecules that are discovered, only couple of hundred are investigated, only one enters into the market and only a third becomes a marketable success (Gilbert and Sarkar 3). A drug development time may take on average over 15 years and expenditure R D total costs of about $880 million (Gilbert and Sarkar 2) (Exhibit 3). The length for and FDA application is at least 100,000 pages, which details the potential drug s usage, production, formula and labeling. Another weakness with Merck is that too much power is given to scientists in decision making of candidate drugs. The MRL was somewhat the main decision makers in organizing the drug development process including final say on whether Phase V or post evaluation drug studies could be used. MRL, at one time, did not show a lot of emphasis on Phase V and wanted to move on after Phase III. Insurance allows individuals, businesses and other entities to protect themselves against significant potential losses and financial hardship at a reasonably affordable rate. Heather was asked if she believes there are any social issues for an assisted living home, and immediately said yes. Fitzgerald, by comparing Gatsby and Trimalchio, critiques the excesses of high society in 1920s America, although there remains a redeeming element in Gatsby not shared by the other bourgeoisie. Both Gatsby and Trimalchio possess opulent wealth, and each one leverages said wealth in orgiastic parties and banquets the excess of which shows both Petronius and Fitzgerald s disdain for the decadence of the plutocrats of their respective eras. And most importantly, he won t become an experimental consumer who is tried out on a variety of drugs (like anti depressants that are so popular today), in the mean time becoming dependent on them. • 17. Madness Theme In Hamlet Hamlet s Madness There are a variety of different themes that are shown within the play Hamlet . These themes vary from death to obsession and also betrayal, all of which contribute in some manner to encourage Hamlet s madness. In every theme, the audience can somewhat relate on a level both back in the day and in contemporary times as death, obsession and betrayal are common entities, well known today and will continue to be known and understood until the end of time. There are many themes that reoccur, all of which relate back to Hamlet s madness, specifically including death, obsession, and betrayal. It has been rumored that Hamlet, the play in this case, is a perfect combo of internal and external forces. Hamlet experiences turmoil, based not only on his inner mental state, but also on the external circumstances of both the murder of his father committed jointly by his mother and the constant spying on him by Claudius and Polonius. In this case, Hamlet mostly likely is just suffering from some mild paranoia.. Hamlet seem to think about suicide throughout the course of the play more than the average person would. Hamlet is trying to avoid and not to be subjected to the inevitable heartache that is simply a part of life, and by wishing to not have to tolerate pain, shows why his wish is to die. At the end, Hamlet has apparently made the decision that he would rather die, but if only he were not afraid of what would come after death. This also reflects Hamlet s depression in that he would constantly think about death and suicide. The question remains as to whether or not this is madness. It is possible that because he debats about suicide in a very real and serious way, it could possibly be thought of as madness as it is not a thought that any normal person would ever have. • 18. Genetics And Biotechnology And Its Effect On The World... The definition of biotechnology, according to the fourth addition biology book from BJU press, states that Biotechnology is the use of technology to enhance living organisms and processes. Their are many aspects of biotechnoogy including cloning, genetic engineering, stem cell technology, gene therapy and genetically modified plants and food. I will be splitting this paper off into sections by these specific aspects in order to learn more about genetics and biotechnology and its effect on the world around us. So let s dive in. Section 1. Cloning There are three common types of clones:natural clones, artificial clones and last but not least human clones. Natural cloning occurs when animals without man s intervention create a native, unaffected genetic copy of themselves as their young. This occurs by asexually reproduction, a process in which certain animals don t need two parents in order to create a young, but can make sperm themselves. Organisms that are multicellular can reproduce by processes such as: fragmentation, budding or produce spores from asexual reproduction from natural clones. Natural clones make an exact genetic copy of themselves except in the fetus stage. The organisms that can make a natural clone are some jellyfish, some insects and some worms. Unlike most animals that are more common to us such as fish, birds and mammals reproduce sexually making them inapplicable for natural cloning. Unlike the animal kingdom, plants can easily make clones and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. If We Are Not Reading If we are not reading carefully, it s easy to move from chapter 27 to 28, simply presume that Job continued to speak, and sail right on into chapters 29 and beyond. That s especially true if our reading is guided (as it often is) by headings in whatever translation we are reading. The ESV, for example, shapes our perception with Job Continues: Where is Wisdom? at the beginning of chapter 28. The NASB implies the same idea Job Tells of Earth s Treasures. Likewise, the NKJV reads Job s Discourse on Wisdom. The NIV has no break at all between chapters 27 and 28, suggesting that Job simply continued. Nonetheless, it seems best to understand chapter 28 as an interlude during which the reading/listening audience was granted breathing space. There had been words in profusion, overwhelming in sheer volume to say nothing of tone. Thus, time for silent contemplation was essential. That might also imply Job himself stopped speaking into the drama. Where may wisdom be found? We might ask why inquire about wisdom at this point? Hasn t the disputation been about justice and righteousness? If anything, Job might have been asking where is God to be found? Is this another hint that they had all missed something critical? Is it a preparation for the specific wisdom focus in God s discourses? Whoever uttered these verses, their contents are rich. Indeed, the largest source of drinking water in Florida is groundwater from the state s massive aquifer system; approximately ninety percent of the state s drinking water is extracted from groundwater sources (Marella, 2004). According to Marella (2004), Between 1970 and 2000, total freshwater withdrawals increased for public supply by 176 percent and for agricultural self supplied by 87 percent (p. 1). As discussed previously, a growing population correlates with an increase in the demand for groundwater resources. Groundwater is currently being pumped out of Florida s aquifers faster than the state s abundant rainfall can refill them (Barnett, 2007, p.2). The excessive pumping of groundwater can create subsurface voids because of the lowering of the water table, which can lead to the development of sinkholes due to gravity and a loss of fluid pressure support (Tihansky, 1999, p. 132). • 33. Analyzing Virtue Ethics My purpose of this essay is to explain and analyze virtue ethics. According to virtue ethics, in order to live an ethical life, one must possess the right character traits, which are virtues, and as a result, they will have the appropriate moral character. While virtue ethics does have many strengths to it, such as that it places a central role on character, I have to disagree with this theory because it is too difficult to identify which virtues we should acquire. Unlike most ethical theories, virtue ethics understands morality in terms of good and bad character rather than the rightness or wrongness of actions. It tells us not how we should act but how we ought to act. Virtue ethics emphasizes the role of character and virtue rather than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One weakness of virtue ethics is that it is not action guiding. Other theories rely on one rule or principle that offer a clear direction on what to do. As long as someone knows the principles, they can apply them to practical situations. Virtue ethics fails to give any help on how we should behave and lacks focus when it comes to determining actions that are morally acceptable from the ones that need to be avoided. Instead, it focuses more on the qualities an individual needs to improve in order to become a good person. Another problem with virtue ethics is that it is hard to determine what traits are virtues and whether they are so in all circumstances. Virtuous characteristics can be performed even when the actions carried out are unethical. For example, courage is often regarded as a virtue, but can there not be courageous thefts? It seems that a theft could exhibit courage while robbing a store, yet everyone usually agrees that stealing is morally wrong. There are also so many different opinions and perspectives of people that come from diverse cultures and societies. These aspects can lead to differences on what is morally right or wrong for people and make it hard to identify virtues. Are there really any traits that are universal? Finally, virtue ethics can be all about luck. The path to becoming virtue is difficult and many things outside our control can go wrong. The right education, influences, or habits can help someone develop virtue, while the wrong influences can encourage vice. Some people will be lucky and receive the help and encouragement they need, but others will not. Therefore, it is not fair to reward the virtuous and blame the vicious for something they could not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If a region spend too much time and expenditure on developing events industry, it will create a unbalanced development, it will displace some traditional business and make some other basic industries growth rate declined, the growth rate of events industry will decrease because it could not develop without enough supports from other basic and traditional industries. Social impacts A big event can always bring a lot of benefits to the society of the host city, holding an event means there will be more opportunities of jobs for the citizens in the city and it will increase employment. • 38. Theme Of Courage In Beowulf In the epic poem, Beowulf, the main character, Beowulf, can be seen as one of the most prime and pure examples of an epic hero due to his almighty courage. What is an epic hero without courage? Well, not a epic hero at all. Beowulf has the superhuman strength, glory and fame, but he cannot embody those characteristics if he does not have courage to drive him primarily. Initially, the reader can get a taste of Beowulf epicness when he heavily boasts about his battle at sea with Breca. Due to jealousy, Unferth calls him out for his loss in the thrashing waves, yet Beowulf shows no embarrassment and even exploits Unferth for his lack of braveness as he claims, The fact is, Unferth, if you were truly as keen and courageous as you claim to be, Grendel would never have gotten away with such unchecked atrocity, attacks on your king, havoc in Heorot and horror everywhere (Heaney 590 594). He makes it clear that no one can deteriorate or match the courage that he beholds. While he the battle is brought up, Beowulf states that Often, for undaunted courage, fate spares a man that it has not already marked (572 573). This is inferring that if one hasn t died yet due to fate, they can continue living their life through courage. This foreshadows the mindset of Beowulf and how he holds the theory of bravery close in his morals. As Beowulf goes on to explain this rigorous battle, he claims that not only did he swim for seven days in full armor, but also nonchalantly slayed nine sea ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Distorted Reality In Katherine Mansfield s Miss Brill Katherine Mansfield was born in 1888 in New Zealand, and passed away the year of 1923 in France. She moved to London as a young woman and began writing short stories. In her story Miss Brill, a lonesome, elderly lady spends her day watching people in a local public garden. Miss Brill was unnoticed by the people that visited the garden, but she managed to convince herself that she was an amazing actress and the people around her were just part of her world. Her fantasy is quickly crushed by remarks made by two people in the garden towards the end of the story. Events following the incident in the park make it clear that something changed in Miss Brill at the end of the story. The theme of this story is a distorted reality, and Miss Brill was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This leaves some people alone, friendless, and left to create their own sense of existence. Miss Brill is one of these people, she is distant from the world and does not really belong anywhere. People acted as if she did not exist, and for the most part did not speak to her. She became very skilled at eavesdropping on other people s conversations without letting them know she was listening. She was so accustomed to listening to others and observing, she forgot that is was normal to engage in conversations with others around her. Although Miss Brill is an English teacher, it is clear that she does not share things with people in her life such as her students. One can assume that there is not a real connection between Miss Brill and her students. While she believes going to the park is like a big play in which she is very important, she still fails to share this information with her class. The relationship with the old man that she reads to at the park four times a week is almost non existent. She insinuates that if he were to die it would not matter to her. She thinks she is an actress reading to an old gentlemen, but in reality she is just a school teacher reading to a man that is sleeping. • 40. Avatar Effect What I call the Avatar effect plays a pervasive (if unconscious) role on the road. Basically, it comes down to moral hazard: people are more likely to take risks when they feel they are shielded from the consequences of their actions. Especially when they feel detached from danger via avatars or proxies. Like Jake Sully (the crippled main character of Avatar), who uses a super expensive Na vi human hybrid, to transport himself to a place where he can make a fortune (for someone else, and a (relative) pittance for himself); people conduct themselves in a manner that corresponds to their perceived risk/reward ratio. Jake was quite emboldened by the fact that he himself was not at risk of dying when he was going about Pandora in his Na vi Avatar. There was only a small sense of fiscal preservation in his actions. Obviously, drivers are not as reckless as Jake, for whom death was taken ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Drivers subconsciously feel almost anonymous and essentially invincible once inside their cars. The rolling metal machines take all the punishment, while protecting all passengers inside. That is why people do not mind cutting strangers off in a manner that makes them have to slam on their brakes to avoid collision. The way selfish people see it, the worst possible outcome of that is a fender bender that gives them a palpable excuse for being late to work. They (like Jake) are also held aback by the fear of losing such an expensive product. Granted, much of that fear is mitigated by insurance companies (straight out of pandora s box) who are now brazenly siphoning resources from people (though not the Na vi s unobtainium (but only because they are fictional)). People drive as reckless as they do because they feel safe in their automotive avatars. They have seen countless crash test dummies walk away from brutal collisions of all kinds, with impacts emanating from every ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Daphnia Research Paper Copper is a naturally occurring element that can be found in all plants and animals. A certain amount of copper is necessary for health, and the human body has developed a way to maintain the proper level of copper in it (Minnesota). Even so, large concentrations of copper, and general long term exposure, can have a negative impact on the body. Symptoms include stomachaches, vomiting, diarrhea, liver and kidney damage, and even death (Lenntech). Exposure to copper comes from many areas, but the most common one is through the water. Copper is commonly found in plumbing pipes, which can lead to high levels of copper in drinking water and fresh water sources due to erosion. Lakes and streams are also treated with copper to prevent algae overgrowth (Group). Copper concentrations that exceed 20 micrograms per gram can be toxic to any living thing (Solomon). Copper binds easily to organic matter, which means it levels are rather high in animals that can filter materials from water; although biomagnification doesn t occur in the food web. In terms of aquatic organisms and ecosystems, copper is one of the most toxic metals, and aquatic organisms tend to be more sensitive to its effects. Daphnia are normally used to test potentially harmful substances in water supplies, and are easy to handle and monitor. This experiment was designed around this fact, ... • 42. Hypochondria Argumentative Essay Hypochondria, most have heard this word before, whether on a television show or even in comedic jokes. But, what is hypochondria? Most people who have heard of this illness disassociate it from its definition. Hypochondria is when a healthy person is obsessively worried about their health, usually believing they are ill with something they are not. Although, people who are seriously afflicted with this mental sickness can develop other symptoms, and are called hypochondriacs. To begin with, there are quite a few symptoms of hypochondria that a person may utilize to find whether or not they, or another person, suffers from this disorder. To start, a person may develop severe anxiety, to the point to where it incredibly influences their daily life in a debilitating way. Of course, the more obvious characteristic is the irrational belief that the person, suspected to be a hypochondriac, is constantly afflicted with an injury or ... • 43. Indifference By Elie Wiesel There is no question as to whether or not an author can influence their reader s emotions. It is something that most people experience at some point or another through fictional novels or a biography, or a speech. The question is how do they do it and why. Through their use of stories and word choice authors are able to heighten emotional intensity in order to manipulate the reader into feeling certain emotions. In a paper or speech where authors are trying to persuade, authors create these emotions because their audience is more likely to accept their argument and want to bring change if they are emotionally invested in something. One particular author that is very good at this is Elie Wiesel. In his speech, Perlis of Indifference, he describes his experience during the holocaust. He is able to evoke emotions of remorse, and guilt from the audience by telling his story with vivid details, and sharing his definition of indifference with the audience. He does this so we understand that indifference is a bad thing, and it is something that we should try to end. When people think about being indifferent to something they would think of it as something that they do not care about, something that is harmless. While Wiesel may agree that being indifferent means not caring he would not agree that being indifferent is harmless. He states, Indifference after all is more dangerous than anger and hatred. Anger at times can be creative... But indifference is never creative... ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
