Steve Harmon Character Analysis
CHARACTER DESCRIPTION INVOLVEMENT Steve Harmon Steve Harmon is a 16 year old black
man who is being convicted of felony murder and participating in a holdup at a drugstore. Steve grew
up in a bad neighborhood and on multiple occasions admired the tough thug guys and even wanted to
be like King (pg 96). His flashbacks show us that Steve did talk to King, Johnny and Cruz about a
planned holdup, (pg 50) though in court he outright lies and says that he never talked to either one of
them about anything important enough to remember (pg 226). When in prison, Steve is terrified of the
other guys and guards (pg 96) and gives us the impression that he is innocent and doesn t belong there.
Steve wants to make himself different than the other guys in his mind and the mind of the jury, but he
goes through hard times where he sees himself as just another criminal (pg 129.) He proves to be a
pretty good kid in his film class with Mr. Sawicki (pg 234) and loves his little brother, Jerry (pg 58).
Steve sees himself as a good person, though he admits that he has made mistakes. Steve s biggest
struggle throughout the novel is against his moral, as he tries to figure out if he really he is a monster
like Petrocelli called him. Filmmaking becomes his way of coping with the environment while on
trial. Through his screenplay his can separate himself from his inner and outer fears and make sense of
his experience. Filmmaking allows Steve to look at things from an outside perspective. Kathy

Gender, Ethnicity, And Class
The purpose of this paper is to assess two research based articles from a psychology journal from two
different time periods. The assessment was to compare the way gender, ethnicity, and class was
represented in each of the articles and how they differ from each time period. The articles were chosen
from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. The first article was from 1976 titled, Impact
of fear of success and sex role attitudes on women s competitive achievement (Peplau, 1976). The
second article of interest was titled, Psychological well being and job stress predict marital support
interactions: A naturalistic observational study of dual earner couples in their homes (Wang Repetti,
2014). The piece from 1976 was written by Letitia Anne Peplau and she wanted to compare results
from a previous experiment done by M.S. Horner in 1972 that measured the fear if success on women
s achievement to her own experiment on the same topic. Horner suggests that many women are in
conflict about intellectual and professional achievement (Peplau, 1976). Peplau wanted to compare
Horner s results to her own results when it concerned women s sex role attitudes of traditionalism and
liberalism. The goal was to see if there was a difference in the fear factor of success between the two
ideologies of dating women when they were on their own and when they were with their partners. She
also wanted to see if the fear of success was correlated differently to competition against

Booesman s Monologue
Question one
Like the words in brackets suggest, Boesman in this monologue is angry and has an element of
aggressiveness. This monologue is recited at a very violent voice. The monologue however resembles
an irony as Boesman speaks so much about freedom that he claims to have and yet does not have at
all. He speaks of being free yet he does not have a place to rest his own head, to call his own nor to
even feel safe around. He speaks of freedom yet he always lives on the run for a Whiteman and they
still wonders around in search of a place and identity in hope of finding out who they are. They move
around clueless trying to find a place to repeat their pattern of building their pondok where the
Whiteman will not find them, yet he speaks of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

abuse of power by the white man, they use the power they have to oppress the black community, take

Examples Of Confucianism In The Movie Mulan
Mulan, a tale of adventure and honor, is not only an engaging film to watch, but it also contains an
amazing amount of historical accuracy concerning religions in China. The film Mulan is historically
accurate in its portrayal of Daoist ideas, the expected behavior of women according to Confucianism,
and Confucian relationships.
First of all, the movie Mulan is historically accurate in its portrayal of Daoist thoughts. One of the
main Daoist thoughts is that nature s function is better than constructs or actions taken by humans.
This is well represented when Mulan faces an army of Huns at the alps. Instead of having taking a
more human focused route by firing the cannon directly at the approaching army, she acts like a true
Daoist and shoots ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this philosophy, relationships that people share with others are considered to be extremely
important. The relationship between a father and a son is a significant hierarchical relationship, and in
this kind of relationship the sons must treat their fathers with immense respect. This type of
relationship is best exemplified in the scene where Shang mourns his dead father s loss with a small
shrine with his father s helmet. It s a respectful and thoughtful way that a son would react to his parent
s death, and the importance of the father son relationship is really emphasized in this scene. Another
important relationship in Confucianism is the one shared between a ruler and his subjects. The subject
s responsibility is to follow that of the ruler, and the ruler s is to take care of his subjects. This
relationship is shown in the second scene of the film, when Shang s father and the emperor discuss the
possible ways to handle the Hun invasion. Instead of sending his troops to protect his own palace, as
suggested by Shang s father, the emperor commands him to send the troops to protect the people of
China. This action shows that the emperor regards the ruler subject relationship as important by
fulfilling his obligation to take care of his subjects. Another way the father child relationship is
accurately portrayed is the strong bond that Mulan and her father possess.

Legal Aid In Criminal Justice
One thing that needs to be changed within the civil justice system is a victims right to counsel,
especially involving domestic violence victims that have a low income. The President of the Legal
Services Corporation, James J. Sandman quotes that Most Americans don t realize that you can have
your home taken away, your children taken away and you can be a victim of a domestic violence, but
have no constitutional right to a lawyer to protect you Basically, the abuser is entitled to free legal
assistance if they are charged with a crime, but there is no legal right to an attorney for victims that try
to get a restraining order or a protective order in civil cases. As the article would say, there is no right

It is great to see that some victim assistance programs are funded through good will contributions.
However, sadly we live in a world where a large majority are consumed with selflessness, or are

What Role Does Utopia Play In A Dystopian Society
The world in any society has two sides, Utopia which is defined as the perfect world and the peaceful
life that is free from disasters. This word Utopia is derived from Greek roots by Sir Thomas More
which means a good place (More 37). Merriam Webster defined Utopia as an imaginary place, all life
aspects are perfect, as the world suffers from nothing (Webster 19). while Dystopia is defined as an
imagined universe in which the unequal society controls the fancy of an ideal society which are
maintained through technological, moral, corporate or totalitarian control Beauty of dystopia is that it
lets us vicariously experience future worlds but we still have the power to change our own (Condie
75). in which the genre challenges utopia s fundamental supposition of human perfectibility, arguing
humanity s inherent flaws that negate the possibility of constructing ideal societies.
both Utopia and Dystopia are opposite terms, one means perfection and the other means that
everything is terrible. as many writers, critics and philosophers give different definitions for them, and
many books have written about them,To show that the society as it is or how it should be. The

There Should Be Year Round School Essay
Should schools be year round. Year round school could help in many reasons. It could help with
academic achievement. It could be horrible though, because it would ruin family plans. There have
been a ton of arguments about if this should be a thing or not. The whole country would be affected in
a terrific way and a horrible way, if the summer was removed, I would be on the pro side for some
certain reasons.
Removing any sort of a long break from school can improve a child s academic achievement, The Pros
and Cons of year round school stated. If we took away break, then we would be more like a genius
and more people could go to college and get better jobs. People might not fail as much. Kids would be
able to get more scholarships. We would remember all of the things in school and be smarter the next
year. Kids would not be held back or have to go to summer school. It would help the family because
they might not have to pay for college and summer school. Kids could work better in groups because
they would be with those people during the year much longer than Though it may seem fun, a summer

Still Alice Identity
A man is only a man as long as he deems himself to be as such. In the novels, Me Before You and Still
Alice the authors, Jojo Moyes and Lisa Genova suggest that hopelessness is inescapable when a
person is stripped of what they consider to be the core essence of themselves. Will Traynor, the male
protagonist in Me Before You is an adventurous young man who found his identity though the joy of
physical thrills yet he completely lost his mobility due to a motorcycle accident which shattered his
idea of himself. By contrast, for an academic like Alice Howland, the protagonist in Still Alice, her
identity is her intelligent mind which is gradually fading due to the fact that she has developed a case
of early onset Alzheimer s disease. Both individuals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Will is no longer the Will he used to be as he has lost so much of himself. He cannot see himself being
truly happy in the future if he has to live bound to his wheelchair. He has lost all of his hope and in his
eyes, death seems to be the only option left for him. This is the path he chooses for himself. Louisa
confesses her love for Will and he rejects her affections. Heartbroken, she vents to her sister saying, I
told him I loved him, she said, her voice dropping to a whisper. And he just said it wasn t enough.
(119). Louisa s love is not enough to revitalize his love of life. Everyday before his accident, Will
worked to achieve his dreams. He tells Louisa during one of their first encounters that, I worked out
what would make me happy, and I worked out what I wanted to do, and I trained myself to do the job
that would make those two things happen. (61). Will worked hard so he could live the way he wanted
to and one day the reason he worked so hard was stripped away from him. By the time Louisa meets
Will Traynor, he is already too far gone in his depression to find another reason to live. Will lost all of
his hope and in turn, lost all of his will to live. His hopelessness killed him, his depression was merely

Essay on Gregor as Catalyst for Metamorphosis
Gregor as Catalyst for Metamorphosis of the Family
In Franz Kafka s The Metamorphosis, Gregor is not the only presence that undergoes a complete
transformation. Sometimes a change in one area of life will give way to changes in other areas, but the
ensuing changes would not have come about without the first change that set things in motion. This is
the case with Gregor and his family. Gregor s family was in dire need of change, and Gregor s
condition became a powerful catalyst for that change. Gregor s metamorphosis facilitates the change
of his entire family, proving that oftentimes an outside source is needed to pull people out of a rut and
get them on their feet again.
Before Gregor turned into a giant bug, his entire ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through the course of the novel, the family proceeds from a state of senselessness to a gradual form of
existentialism. In the beginning, the lives of the family members mean nothing and have no purpose.
They are not individuals, but rather mindless drones who take advantage of a convenient situation,
allowing Gregor to meet the expenses of the whole household (95). After Gregor is transformed in his
bed into a gigantic insect (67), the lifestyle of the family changes dramatically. As David
Eggenschwiler says, the three Samsas [the family] . . . assume and struggle with many of the problems
that Gregor once had (208). No longer able to rely on Gregor, the family must now face the difficulties
of supporting the household and providing income. As a result, each member of the family: the
mother, the father, and the sister, slowly has a metamorphosis.
Throughout the course of the story, Gregor s mother gradually changes, becoming more self sufficient.
In the early stages of the story, Gregor describes his mother as having severe asthma, which kept her
lying on a sofa every other day panting for breath (97). The mother seems destined to be a bystander,
incapable of working or taking action. However, as the story progresses, she desires to see her lost son
and develops a more adventurous spirit. She cries, do let me in to Gregor, he is my unfortunate son
(100). She slowly begins to emerge from her secluded world and

Transit Oriented Development ( Tod ) Essay
Introduction
Transit Oriented Development (TOD) began as a counter movement to urban sprawl and it s
economic, social, and environmental impacts by moving more towards the garden city movement of
the 19th century be designating areas for specific land use, while also, employing the design of
multiuse buildings. By looking at the greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area there is a need to
accommodate for future cities by employing community and regional design concepts.
Content
The future of living is cities. Somehow the ancients understood it, but Americans in the 1950s decided
cities were a thing of the past. The movement from the city to the suburb has been one of the single
most expensive cultural migrations in world history. There is much more than the initial cost of a
house with a yard. There are the environmental costs that accumulate from the destruction of wildlife
from both, building materials and the clearing of area for the physical house. This initial cost also does
not account for the supermarkets, and roads needed to sustain life in these suburban areas separated
into pods. What about the costs of a car needed for transportation in these metropolises, and all their
external costs as well? Those are not accounted for either, but suburban living was the American
Dream for nearly half a century. However, as the American Dream, and family models, change there is
an evident need for living conditions to change as well. There is not a singular way to design a city,

Facts And Facts About An Expert Based On Their Experience
Facts are facts; they are irrefutable. Therefore, how can two people in the same field disagree when
they are able to view the same facts? This brings to mind two questions. If two people disagree over
the facts, then what are facts? If facts are blameless, then to what extent is one an expert based on their
knowledge in contrast to their experience? This year I realized that facts and experts may be
ambiguous terms as the country prepared for an election. Specifically, I entered into domestic
discussions with my own parents. Though I had learned many of my values from them, we disagreed
politically. I decided that though my parents and I could see the same facts, we had different
experiences and emotions that allowed us to be on different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

More specifically, it showed that facts are ambiguous, sometimes because morals or religious beliefs
can alter their meanings. In this scenario, the knowledge that stem cells from human embryos offer the
chance to cure many diseases is an idea that is pleasing to countries where disease is rampant, but is
disturbing to those whose religious beliefs indicate that life begins before birth. As a result it is
possible for two experts to disagree because of how they define life, often caused by their own
experiences and emotions. Disagreements may even come when two experts share knowledge of the
same subject, even though they use it in different fields. On March 4, 1986, The Times published an
article titled Two Experts Disagree on Skull Findings. Louise Robbins, a forensic anthropologist at the
University of North Carolina; and John B. Butts, associate chief medical examiner for North Carolina
both agreed that a skull found in Guilford Creek belonged to a young, white female. However,
Robbins insisted that the girl was most likely shot in the head while Butts insists that the girl likely
underwent a surgery, a surgeon s drill being the cause of the hole. In the article, Robbins made clear
that she and Butts come from different backgrounds and

UFO and Alien Sightings
UFO and Alien sightings One of the most interesting topics to think about is if we really alone in this
world. Many people believe that aliens do not exist, and many people believe that aliens do exist.
Some people claim to have been abducted, and some people believe it is crazy to say other life forms
may exist out there. Interesting enough, many signs do point to the existence of extraterrestrial life
forms. Many examples of Alien and UFO sightings include, such as spaceship wreckage, recorded
sightings in the sky, and Alien life forms found on Earth and other planets. To begin with, reported
Alien sightings continue to surface. The 1947 Roswell incident is a great example of a UFO sighting.
An unidentified flying object crashed on a ranch northwest of Roswell, New Mexico, sometime during
the first week of July 1947 ( 1947 Roswell UFO Incident ). Brazel said that as they rode along, he
began to notice unusual pieces of what seemed to be metal debris scattered over a large area. Upon
further inspection, he said, he noticed a shallow trench several hundred feet long gouged into the
ground ( 1947 Roswell UFO Incident ). And, according to Marcel, the debris was strewn over a wide
area, I guess maybe three quarters of a mile long and a few hundred feet wide. Scattered in the debris
were small bits of metal that Marcel held a cigarette lighter to, to see if it would burn ( 1947 Roswell
UFO Incident ). The Proctors told Brazel he might be holding wreckage from an alien

Climate Analysis On Climate Archives
There is significant evidence from studies based on climate archives that the Earth s climate about 10
000 years ago was very different from the present climate; it has changed a lot since the last glacial
period which ended about 10 000 12 000 years ago (Chappell, 1998). Hence, about 10 000 years ago
the Earth was buried under ice sheets and it was much cooler than present temperatures (see Figure 1,
Appendix) (Chappell, 1998). The Earth that has been cycling between cold and warm climates for
ages and is currently in the interglacial period where it has slowly become warmer along with a rise in
sea level (Watts, 2009). There are many climate archives which can help scientists study past climates

Corals were first discovered about 200 million years, however most have grown over the last 10 000
years. Therefore, corals are great climate archives to use in order to study the climate from the last 10
000 years. Corals also have a wide array of climatic history stored within them (Introduction: Coral
Reefs, 2015). They have a long lifetime and rapid growth which makes them ideal climate archives for
studying the past climate (Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics, 2015). Along with the corals
there is the foraminifera; also referred to as sea floor fossils. These sea floor fossils are often found in
sediment cores and can reveal a variety of things about the past climate through ocean currents,
temperature and oxygen ratios. Also these fossils are the most common source of paleoceanographic
proxies, making them easily available (Kucera, 2007). Hence, foraminifera or sea floor fossils are an
ideal climate archives for studying the past climate from about 10 000 years ago alongside corals.
Information about the past climate can not only help us understand our present climate but can also
help predict our future climate trends.
Corals, which are one of the climate archives been discussed, are living organisms who produce a
calcium carbonate skeleton to make themselves look like rocks. The calcium carbonate bands found in
corals help form permanent records of seasonal and annual climate changes. Corals are a type of biotic

Minority groups have always been marginalized and bellowed by our current justice system in society
within these groups are women, this leads to questioning the role of the justice system in perpetuating

these women specifically Native American women from sexual violence, and what worsens the case is
that more often than not their attackers are let off easy or escape punishment altogether because of
federal, state and tribal jurisdictions. In the Round House by Louise Erdrich which is set in 1988 and

Mutual Aid Agreements Are Essential For Allocating Resources
Mutual Aid Agreements Brian H. Doyle Saint Leo University Abstract Mutual aid agreements are
essential for allocating resources, equipment, and personnel between jurisdictions through intrastate,
interstate, private organizations, and nongovernmental organizations agencies in the event of an
emergency situation that exceeds the capabilities of the local agencies. Intrastate agencies mobilized
by a mutual aid agreement consist of resources within the state that can provide support to the
requesting department. During catastrophic events, interstate sources activated through a mutual aid
agreement are comprised of resources from other states that are able to support the operations required
when state resources are incapable of providing adequate aid. Private sector organizations, nonprofit
organizations, and nongovernmental organizations provide additional support in times of crisis when
the organization has necessary resources to sustain operations. Emergency situations that may arise
and benefit from the resources established in an existing mutual aid agreement include mass casualty
incidents, fire and law enforcement situations, natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes, and
terrorist attacks. Mutual Aid Agreements provide for increased capabilities during natural disasters,
terrorist events, and other emergency situations by enabling organizations at all levels to leverage
resources in their favor when the situation exceeds the capabilities of the local

OPEC and the United states inevitably became more dependent on imported oil during the 1970s.
Perfect Collusion Model:
OPEC recognized their interdependence decided to collaborate in the matter of pricing their product
(Oil). There will be one market demand function (AR MR) and many cost functions (AC and MC) as
the number of competing countries in the OPEC. So various MC curves can then be summed up
horizontally to get the combined MC (CMC). The point where CMC and MR curve intersect gives the
point of maximum profit output. AR curve will give the equilibrium price. The distribution of industry
output among countries would be obtained by equating MR=MC through a horizontal straight line
passing through the point of intersection between CMC and MR curves.
Below is the diagram of Homogeneous oligopoly pricing under perfect collusion:
OPEC output and prices are shown in last part (d) where CMC was obtained by horizontal sum up of
MC1 ,MC2 MC3 i.e. the marginal costs. AR and MR represent demand and corresponding marginal
revenue curves of the OPEC as a whole. OPEC output OQ is divided among the partner countries as in
diagram shown say three as Oq1, Oq2 Oq3. The sum of these outputs equal OPEC output OQ by
construction. Each of the country sells oil at an uniform price equal to OP which is determined in
diagram part (d).

Essay about Mentoring
Managing People Individual Assessment
Managing Mentoring
With the development of the more organic and less formal organisational structures the role of
mentors has shifted with these changes. Unlike previously where mentors where seen as formal
trainers who taught newcomers the processes and got them acquainted with the cultures and the
systems within the organisation. Which required good interpersonal skills and a good knowledge of
the activity or tasks the mentee would have to undertake, and be able to effectively relay or
demonstrate the tasks or activities to the mentee. As opposed to more recently where a mentor would
have to be more of an emotional counselor and demonstrate more skills than were traditionally
required from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Accompanied with the current shift towards more organic organisation structures and more emphasis
on the learning organisation, mentoring provides a more all round experience to the mentees by
getting them confident with their role with the organisation. It also improves communication
throughout the organisation by allowing mentees to give feedback and learn in a not so formal fashion
which helps people feel more relaxed and develops the formal and informal culture of the
organisation.
From the organisations standpoint mentoring is a cost effective way of training and developing new
staff, and it helps retain existing staff by giving them more responsibility. It is argued that with the
underlying causes behind facilitated mentoring lying in cost effectiveness, does this underlying tenet
prevent a real chemistry existing between the mentor and the mentee.
This is not necessarily the case in all organisations, the Metropolitan police force (a non profit
organisation) have recognised the need for mentoring and have incorporated it both internally and
externally to assist them in their day to day work. The Metropolitan Police have started a mentoring
scheme for young ethnic officers by pairing them with a mentor from the same background, to help
them get prepared for the job and also to act as counselors and to deal with any reservations they may
have about joining the force. This type of mentoring scheme is based more around relationship
forming and

Social Equality Essay
Social Equality Synthesis of American History and Today
The development of America as a nation was largely influenced by several key points in its history
that gave rise to a country that is continuously struggling with social equality. First, the consolidation
of the United States Constitution, in 1786, failed to legalize slavery, which contentiously allowed
slavery to continue, dehumanizing blacks to lower positions in America s social hierarchy. Next, the
changing dynamics of social roles redefined the traditional male and female societal responsibilities
and obligations that generated a divide of gender issues. The issue prompted a surge of feminist
activists that sought for gender equality that is still being debated today. Finally, in a current and
contemporary example, President Trump s aggressive stance on immigration has forced many
immigrants to be fearful of their current status in the country. This issues has been severely centered
around race, which has been the core issue and debate with President Trump, Democrats, and the
nation. From the 17th century to the 21st century, the United States debated and still debates social
equality and what it means to be citizen and a member of society that was reflective through the
degradation of slaves and blacks, women rights and their elevated roles in society, racial injustice of
African Americans, and the immigration system of contemporary America. The founding of America
was driven on economic prosperity and

Argumentative Essay On National Night Out
I never knew of National Night Out until a couple of weeks ago, when at church, it was mentioned as
an excellent opportunity to connect with one s community. Growing up in a cul de sac with a bunch of
older couples, my siblings and I were always playing all by ourselves. We were limited by the absence
of other neighborhood kids. I acutely remember the pain of not being able to play with any others,
other than my younger siblings. Being part of a vibrant neighborhood community, however, was not
just something that was missing for us, as we lived in a cul de sac. The vista of a neighborhood street
filled with children and families on porches in the evenings after dinner is nothing but a scene in a
movie today. It is a dream of bygone times. We as Americans in general live lives wholly disconnected
from those that live around us. We stay inside, when we re home, and then abscond into our cars as we
drive away to work each day. Our interactions with our neighbors is kept to a minimum. National
Night Out, which is today, August 1, is an annual community building campaign that promotes police
community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring
places to live, for it is known that the lack of a true sense of community weakens the local economy,
isn t conducive to a healthy environment, and breeds disrespect among peoples urban planning and
smart neighborhood development are not only good for the environment, despite such

A Presentation Of The National Nanotechnology Initiative (...
1. Introduction.
There s plenty of room at the bottom ; this statement by Richard Feynman in 1959 during a
presentation to a meeting of the American Physical Society, is widely accepted as the spark that
initiated the present nano age1. Nano, dwarf in Greek, is defined as one billionth, it follows that the
nanoscale is measured in nanometres, or 10 9 m. To put this in perspective; the average strand of a
human hair is roughly 75,000 nm in diameter, or from the other extreme 1 nm is the length of 10
hydrogen atoms lined up end to end.
Nanotechnology can be difficult to define, as its definition is often engineered to suit the researcher
and their field; this resulted in a need of a general working definition, which the national
nanotechnology initiative (NNI) established []. Nanotechnology is thus defined as possessing the
following features;
Nanotechnology involves research and technology development at the 1 nm to 100 nm range.
Nanotechnology builds on the capability to organize or manipulate at the atomic scale.
Nanotechnology creates and uses structures that have novel properties because of their small size.
.
2. Nanotechnology
Nanoscience involves a study of nanotechnology and nanomaterials, of which at least one of the
dimensions is in 1 100 nm range. Over the past two decades, nanomaterials have been a topic of both
scientific and technological interest2. Due to their compact dimension and enlarged surface area, these
materials possess new physical and

Conception Of An Educated Person
Most individuals consider an educated person to be a professor, lawyer, doctor, or anyone who has
completed at least four years at a university. I, however, consider an educated person to be anyone
who holds a piece of knowledge that can be obtained through one s day to day life. One is not required
to attend an institution of higher learning to be considered an educated person, nor is it necessary that
he or she earns a degree, or even a diploma. Despite many individuals believing that a traditional
education must be received in order to be considered an educated person, there are multiple routes that
one can choose; therefore, one is not defined by the amount of schooling that he or she has obtained.
Although an individual may be considered educated , he or she does not necessarily possess greater
knowledge than a carpenter or a real estate broker. In fact, individuals who attend a four year
university are usually only educated in a particular field. Therefore, someone without a college degree
has the ability to be just as knowledgeable in a different field. ... Show more content on

White Privilege In America
Dr. Peggy McIntosh makes a clear distinction between racism and white privilege. Personally, I have
seen and been affected by white privilege more than by racism. I have always been more affected by
the advantages given to whites than the disadvantages given to others. In school I was always
identified as an equal with my white friends, but there were scenarios where I had to work harder to
succeed. It was always difficult communicating my ideas to a predominantly white society. As a
Hindu, I always found it appalling when events at my school were cancelled due to pushback from
white Christian parents. As soon as a white parent would argue for something, administration would
immediately accommodate in any way necessary. When minorities, such ... Show more content on

For example, while visiting family and friends in India, I have always noticed how differently
different tourist groups are treated. A white family will be pampered the entire trip and provided extra
accommodations to make their stays more pleasant, where as my family will be treated like a
commoner and not given any attention. While white privilege mostly refers to societal privileges
afforded to whites indirectly in Western countries, it is hard not to recognize the effects of white
privilege in other communities. Through my experiences, I believe the root of white privilege and
racism is the perpetual dominance of whites over others throughout history: dominance over money,
culture, environment, and people. While people try to eliminate white privilege, it is mostly white
activists trying to promote change. If white privilege is only being condoned criticized by activism in
the white community, it promotes the idea that only white people can engender change. In order to
truly fight white privilege, minorities and activists of all kinds need to unite and overcome the
difficulties. It may be hard in the short term to level the playing field, but once the playing field is
level and power is not controlled by whites, white privilege and racism can finally

Persuasive Essay On Owning A Car
WELL BEING Leasing a car is one way to finance a new automobile. When you lease a car, your
payments are determined by the portion of the life of the car that you actually use: the depreciation of
the car over the period of time that you are leasing. Therefore, with a lease, you can drive a more
expensive car with lower payments, sometimes. However, a key point to remember is that you do not
own the car when you lease. Leasing is like renting. You rent the car for a certain period of time, but
you are also responsible for a down payment and some taxes and fees very similar to a security
deposit on an apartment. At the end of the lease contract (or rental agreement), you give the vehicle
back and you may be charged for any excessive wear on the vehicle. Your initial money down will not
be applied to these charges. These will be additional charges due at the time you return the car.
Furthermore, you are limited to driving the number of miles specified in your contract.
If you exceed the total mileage allowed in the lease, you will pay additional fees per mile that you
went beyond the limit. This can become expensive! Some lease contracts may also include a turn in
fee. A closedend lease will allow you the option of purchasing the car at the end of the lease. If you
choose to purchase the car, you will have a credit applied to the payments you have made previously,
but you will still have to negotiate the purchase price. If you do not have a closed end lease, you will

Nanosolar s value proposition is its lower cost per watt to purchase and install (see Case page 5).
Because thin film PVs require 43% more roof space per watt generated, it is more valuable to larger
commercial and utility customers than residential customers. Nanosolar s focus should remain on
industrial scale projects that benefit most from its lower installation costs. In order to approach
residential market, significant investment is required to establish installer relationships (eg. In the US).
Nanosolar should also focus on production efficiency (see delay of the 2007 Beck s project (Case page
6.) and hire, train sales staff (has only 1 person in the US and 1 person in Switzerland). Worldwide
Solar Market and Incentives By having its final assembly in Germany, Nanosolar is geographically
positioned to meet the needs of developing countries such as India and China while distributing its
panels throughout Europe. Shipping completed modules to the US would require additional cost and
put it at a disadvantage compared to First Solar which has a manufacturing plant in Ohio (Exhibit 9).
Incentives (governmental regulations require utilities to purchase renewable electricity at higher
rates), can only help the business to become established in the market, so are important in the short
and mid term only. Because European incentives diminish over time, in the long term all PV
technologies will compete based on price and performance therefore cost

Stereotypes In The Lion King
Films serve as a means of communication and are composed of millions of different elements that
form a narrative. Also, they use original techniques to deliver messages in ways that the creator wants
them to deliver. Usually, children s films contain a variety of implicit messages, because the language
should be simple, and in turn, it should contain fun elements. However, one of the best ways to create
stereotypes in culture is the use of children s movies, because people build their personality and
critical thinking in their first years of life. An example of this is the movie The Lion King, where the
characters are animals, but also each one plays a role of a human being within a society. This film
shows a patriarchal and sexist society, where men have all the power not only in government but also
within their own family; women, by contrast, have a secondary role always being focused on the
service of men and their children. It also has an implicit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Dilemmas Faced by the Roman Catholic Church Today
Dilemmas Facing Roman Catholic Church Today:
The Roman Catholic Church has faced several dilemmas or challenges in today s society, particularly
on moral issues. Most of the dilemmas that the Catholic Church faces today are rooted in its Roman
traditions, doctrines, and dogmas. Some of these main dilemmas include concerns on whether to be
more conservative or liberal in religious direction, how to deal with the pedophilia crisis, and how to
tackle the shortage of priests. As these dilemmas have continued to be a serious challenge to the
Catholic Church, there is a great need to find the appropriate solutions to them. The Catholic Church
has been characterized by a long simmering hostility between conservative and liberal members of the
church regarding the need for the church to change in the wake of Vatican II. Consequently, the
conservative Catholics have faulted the unsteady post Vatican II perspective that has nearly made
everything permissible whereas the liberals claimed that there is a prejudiced hierarchy that seeks to
sweep unpleasant truths under the rug (Allen, 2012). While many conservative Catholics would like
the existing teachings to remain in place, the liberals are in support of drastic changes to the church
teachings on several issues like marriage and sexual matters. The other major dilemma facing the
Roman Catholic Church today is the pedophilia crisis, especially on how to deal with it. This Church
has been unsettled by numerous and credible

In Quebec, the wine sector is based primarily on value added bottling and blending from imported
bulk wines. Thirty five small grower/estate wineries have also recently emerged in this province,
producing 100,000 bottles annually.
In the Maritimes, six small enterprises account for 13.5% of wine volume, while the two largest
companies in Canada produce the bulk of wine in that region.
The wine industry in Ontario and BC is closely linked to the grape growing sector and, as such, is
directly affected by provincial agricultural policies. In Ontario, the vintners negotiate annually with
the grape growers represented by their marketing board to establish grape prices. In BC, the grape
market is not regulated and growers and wineries contract privately with each other.
Wineries will normally take about 80% of the annual grape production, with much of the balance
going for juice or fresh fruit consumption. Annual grape purchases by wineries in Ontario and BC are
estimated at $75 million.
The industry is closely regulated (see Regulatory Factors section below). Wines, like other alcoholic
beverages, must be distributed and sold through provincial liquor control board outlets. Some
provinces permit wineries to sell their own wines in establishments which they operate. In Quebec,
wine sold in grocery stores must be bottled in the province.

King Louis XIV, On Social Order And Absolute Monarchy
After suppressing revolts by the Fronde in 17th century France, King Louis XIV had become the
supreme ruler of the country. Without any challenges to his power, he was able to practice absolutism,
which is the concentration of power and symbolic authority in royal hands. With this power Louis
XIV had many great achievements in France. He improved the tax system, religion, trading, and court
life.1 Jean Domat was a juror who was supported by the king himself. He dedicated his life to explain
and justify the importance of the role of absolutism in French society. The culmination of this work
can be found in his legal digest, On Social Order and Absolute Monarchy. Many interesting ideas
about the theory of absolutism can be found in his writings. It explains the essential environment for
absolutism, defines the origin and necessity of government, and demonstrates the duties of the
sovereign.
Domat s theory first begins with the idea of a perfect society. It is one with a comfortable style of
living for all in the nation. For this to occur, a state of order is necessary. Everyone needs to know
their rank and work together to contribute to society. Specific roles are given to each person, and
ideally they will all work to the best of their ability. It is in this environment that absolutism thrives.
Relationships between the government and the governed are easier to foster when everyone has a duty
and they do not question their place in the community. Because Domat gave this basis for absolutism
with his idea of teamwork in a state, he is able to justify the rest of his theory.
After providing the basis, Domat justifies the role of government. He starts by stating that all men are
essentially equal by nature. This seems like it would argue against absolute power of government, but
he goes on to find the differences in society. They actually appear in the form of things like social
status, occupation, and relationships built. These factors are what gives rank and society, which in
return prove the need of government. According to Domat, these dynamics also arise in nature. He
explains, this distinction leads to a first kind of government in families, where children owe obedience
to their parents, who head the

  • 2. Steve Harmon Character Analysis CHARACTER DESCRIPTION INVOLVEMENT Steve Harmon Steve Harmon is a 16 year old black man who is being convicted of felony murder and participating in a holdup at a drugstore. Steve grew up in a bad neighborhood and on multiple occasions admired the tough thug guys and even wanted to be like King (pg 96). His flashbacks show us that Steve did talk to King, Johnny and Cruz about a planned holdup, (pg 50) though in court he outright lies and says that he never talked to either one of them about anything important enough to remember (pg 226). When in prison, Steve is terrified of the other guys and guards (pg 96) and gives us the impression that he is innocent and doesn t belong there. Steve wants to make himself different than the other guys in his mind and the mind of the jury, but he goes through hard times where he sees himself as just another criminal (pg 129.) He proves to be a pretty good kid in his film class with Mr. Sawicki (pg 234) and loves his little brother, Jerry (pg 58). Steve sees himself as a good person, though he admits that he has made mistakes. Steve s biggest struggle throughout the novel is against his moral, as he tries to figure out if he really he is a monster like Petrocelli called him. Filmmaking becomes his way of coping with the environment while on trial. Through his screenplay his can separate himself from his inner and outer fears and make sense of his experience. Filmmaking allows Steve to look at things from an outside perspective. Kathy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Gender, Ethnicity, And Class The purpose of this paper is to assess two research based articles from a psychology journal from two different time periods. The assessment was to compare the way gender, ethnicity, and class was represented in each of the articles and how they differ from each time period. The articles were chosen from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. The first article was from 1976 titled, Impact of fear of success and sex role attitudes on women s competitive achievement (Peplau, 1976). The second article of interest was titled, Psychological well being and job stress predict marital support interactions: A naturalistic observational study of dual earner couples in their homes (Wang Repetti, 2014). The piece from 1976 was written by Letitia Anne Peplau and she wanted to compare results from a previous experiment done by M.S. Horner in 1972 that measured the fear if success on women s achievement to her own experiment on the same topic. Horner suggests that many women are in conflict about intellectual and professional achievement (Peplau, 1976). Peplau wanted to compare Horner s results to her own results when it concerned women s sex role attitudes of traditionalism and liberalism. The goal was to see if there was a difference in the fear factor of success between the two ideologies of dating women when they were on their own and when they were with their partners. She also wanted to see if the fear of success was correlated differently to competition against ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Booesman s Monologue Question one Like the words in brackets suggest, Boesman in this monologue is angry and has an element of aggressiveness. This monologue is recited at a very violent voice. The monologue however resembles an irony as Boesman speaks so much about freedom that he claims to have and yet does not have at all. He speaks of being free yet he does not have a place to rest his own head, to call his own nor to even feel safe around. He speaks of freedom yet he always lives on the run for a Whiteman and they still wonders around in search of a place and identity in hope of finding out who they are. They move around clueless trying to find a place to repeat their pattern of building their pondok where the Whiteman will not find them, yet he speaks of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. Examples Of Confucianism In The Movie Mulan Mulan, a tale of adventure and honor, is not only an engaging film to watch, but it also contains an amazing amount of historical accuracy concerning religions in China. The film Mulan is historically accurate in its portrayal of Daoist ideas, the expected behavior of women according to Confucianism, and Confucian relationships. First of all, the movie Mulan is historically accurate in its portrayal of Daoist thoughts. One of the main Daoist thoughts is that nature s function is better than constructs or actions taken by humans. This is well represented when Mulan faces an army of Huns at the alps. Instead of having taking a more human focused route by firing the cannon directly at the approaching army, she acts like a true Daoist and shoots ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this philosophy, relationships that people share with others are considered to be extremely important. The relationship between a father and a son is a significant hierarchical relationship, and in this kind of relationship the sons must treat their fathers with immense respect. This type of relationship is best exemplified in the scene where Shang mourns his dead father s loss with a small shrine with his father s helmet. It s a respectful and thoughtful way that a son would react to his parent s death, and the importance of the father son relationship is really emphasized in this scene. Another important relationship in Confucianism is the one shared between a ruler and his subjects. The subject s responsibility is to follow that of the ruler, and the ruler s is to take care of his subjects. This relationship is shown in the second scene of the film, when Shang s father and the emperor discuss the possible ways to handle the Hun invasion. Instead of sending his troops to protect his own palace, as suggested by Shang s father, the emperor commands him to send the troops to protect the people of China. This action shows that the emperor regards the ruler subject relationship as important by fulfilling his obligation to take care of his subjects. Another way the father child relationship is accurately portrayed is the strong bond that Mulan and her father possess. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. What Role Does Utopia Play In A Dystopian Society The world in any society has two sides, Utopia which is defined as the perfect world and the peaceful life that is free from disasters. This word Utopia is derived from Greek roots by Sir Thomas More which means a good place (More 37). Merriam Webster defined Utopia as an imaginary place, all life aspects are perfect, as the world suffers from nothing (Webster 19). while Dystopia is defined as an imagined universe in which the unequal society controls the fancy of an ideal society which are maintained through technological, moral, corporate or totalitarian control Beauty of dystopia is that it lets us vicariously experience future worlds but we still have the power to change our own (Condie 75). in which the genre challenges utopia s fundamental supposition of human perfectibility, arguing humanity s inherent flaws that negate the possibility of constructing ideal societies. both Utopia and Dystopia are opposite terms, one means perfection and the other means that everything is terrible. as many writers, critics and philosophers give different definitions for them, and many books have written about them,To show that the society as it is or how it should be. Sometimes a change in one area of life will give way to changes in other areas, but the ensuing changes would not have come about without the first change that set things in motion. This is the case with Gregor and his family. Gregor s family was in dire need of change, and Gregor s condition became a powerful catalyst for that change. By looking at the greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area there is a need to accommodate for future cities by employing community and regional design concepts. Content The future of living is cities. Somehow the ancients understood it, but Americans in the 1950s decided cities were a thing of the past. The movement from the city to the suburb has been one of the single most expensive cultural migrations in world history. There is much more than the initial cost of a house with a yard. There are the environmental costs that accumulate from the destruction of wildlife from both, building materials and the clearing of area for the physical house. This initial cost also does not account for the supermarkets, and roads needed to sustain life in these suburban areas separated into pods. What about the costs of a car needed for transportation in these metropolises, and all their external costs as well? Those are not accounted for either, but suburban living was the American Dream for nearly half a century. If facts are blameless, then to what extent is one an expert based on their knowledge in contrast to their experience? This year I realized that facts and experts may be ambiguous terms as the country prepared for an election. Specifically, I entered into domestic discussions with my own parents. Doyle Saint Leo University Abstract Mutual aid agreements are essential for allocating resources, equipment, and personnel between jurisdictions through intrastate, interstate, private organizations, and nongovernmental organizations agencies in the event of an emergency situation that exceeds the capabilities of the local agencies. Intrastate agencies mobilized by a mutual aid agreement consist of resources within the state that can provide support to the requesting department. During catastrophic events, interstate sources activated through a mutual aid agreement are comprised of resources from other states that are able to support the operations required when state resources are incapable of providing adequate aid. Private sector organizations, nonprofit organizations, and nongovernmental organizations provide additional support in times of crisis when the organization has necessary resources to sustain operations. Emergency situations that may arise and benefit from the resources established in an existing mutual aid agreement include mass casualty incidents, fire and law enforcement situations, natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes, and terrorist attacks. Social Equality Essay Social Equality Synthesis of American History and Today The development of America as a nation was largely influenced by several key points in its history that gave rise to a country that is continuously struggling with social equality. First, the consolidation of the United States Constitution, in 1786, failed to legalize slavery, which contentiously allowed slavery to continue, dehumanizing blacks to lower positions in America s social hierarchy. Next, the changing dynamics of social roles redefined the traditional male and female societal responsibilities and obligations that generated a divide of gender issues. In school I was always identified as an equal with my white friends, but there were scenarios where I had to work harder to succeed. It was always difficult communicating my ideas to a predominantly white society. As a Hindu, I always found it appalling when events at my school were cancelled due to pushback from white Christian parents. As soon as a white parent would argue for something, administration would immediately accommodate in any way necessary. When minorities, such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, while visiting family and friends in India, I have always noticed how differently different tourist groups are treated. A white family will be pampered the entire trip and provided extra accommodations to make their stays more pleasant, where as my family will be treated like a commoner and not given any attention. While white privilege mostly refers to societal privileges afforded to whites indirectly in Western countries, it is hard not to recognize the effects of white privilege in other communities. Through my experiences, I believe the root of white privilege and racism is the perpetual dominance of whites over others throughout history: dominance over money, culture, environment, and people. While people try to eliminate white privilege, it is mostly white activists trying to promote change. If white privilege is only being condoned criticized by activism in the white community, it promotes the idea that only white people can engender change. In order to truly fight white privilege, minorities and activists of all kinds need to unite and overcome the difficulties. It may be hard in the short term to level the playing field, but once the playing field is level and power is not controlled by whites, white privilege and racism can finally ... • 29. The Road Back Analysis When Eric Maria Remarque released All Quiet on the Western Front, he was shunned by Germany as being unpatriotic. This didn t stop Remarque from releasing his second book The Road Back but it did lead to him fleeing Germany, his sister being beheaded and his books being burned by the Nazi s. Why all this fuss over fiction, unless the Nazi s did not want the German population to see the truth behind their Glorification of war. The same situation can be seen of the ex soldier Siegfried Sassoon, who was placed in a military psychiatric hospital for his anti war poetry. The fact that both authors of these texts went to war only strengthens the authenticity of the pieces. Remarque was a soldier for Germany in the first world war, with some events ... Edwin Armstrong was only eleven when Marconi made the first transAtlantic radio transmission. Enthralled, the young Armstrong began studying radio and building homemade wireless equipment, including a 125 foot antenna in his parent s backyard. Some of his inventions are considered by many. • 32. Persuasive Essay On Owning A Car WELL BEING Leasing a car is one way to finance a new automobile. When you lease a car, your payments are determined by the portion of the life of the car that you actually use: the depreciation of the car over the period of time that you are leasing. Therefore, with a lease, you can drive a more expensive car with lower payments, sometimes. However, a key point to remember is that you do not own the car when you lease. Leasing is like renting. You rent the car for a certain period of time, but you are also responsible for a down payment and some taxes and fees very similar to a security deposit on an apartment. At the end of the lease contract (or rental agreement), you give the vehicle back and you may be charged for any excessive wear on the vehicle. Your initial money down will not be applied to these charges. These will be additional charges due at the time you return the car. Furthermore, you are limited to driving the number of miles specified in your contract. If you exceed the total mileage allowed in the lease, you will pay additional fees per mile that you went beyond the limit. This can become expensive! Some lease contracts may also include a turn in fee. A closedend lease will allow you the option of purchasing the car at the end of the lease. If you choose to purchase the car, you will have a credit applied to the payments you have made previously, but you will still have to negotiate the purchase price. If you do not have a closed end lease, you will need ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Case Study Analysis Nanosolar is a start up company and expects to be one of the first manufacturers to produce thin film solar panels using copper indium gallium (di)selenide (CIGS) technology. Nanosolar is focused on selling a single type of thin film Photovoltaic (PV) module called the Nanosolar Utility Panel . The utility panel is 50% less energy efficient than c Si modules, but being 90% less expensive to produce. Strategic Options: (1) Continue to invest in European and Asian markets. (2) Enter US Utilities and Commercial Market Immediately. (3) Launch an industrial scale pilot project in the US. Nanosolar s value proposition is its lower cost per watt to purchase and install (see Case page 5). Because thin film PVs require 43% more roof space per watt generated, it is more valuable to larger commercial and utility customers than residential customers. Nanosolar s focus should remain on industrial scale projects that benefit most from its lower installation costs. In order to approach residential market, significant investment is required to establish installer relationships (eg. In the US). Nanosolar should also focus on production efficiency (see delay of the 2007 Beck s project (Case page 6.) and hire, train sales staff (has only 1 person in the US and 1 person in Switzerland). Worldwide Solar Market and Incentives By having its final assembly in Germany, Nanosolar is geographically positioned to meet the needs of developing countries such as India and China while distributing its panels throughout Europe. Shipping completed modules to the US would require additional cost and put it at a disadvantage compared to First Solar which has a manufacturing plant in Ohio (Exhibit 9). Incentives (governmental regulations require utilities to purchase renewable electricity at higher rates), can only help the business to become established in the market, so are important in the short and mid term only. Because European incentives diminish over time, in the long term all PV technologies will compete based on price and performance therefore cost ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Stereotypes In The Lion King Films serve as a means of communication and are composed of millions of different elements that form a narrative. Also, they use original techniques to deliver messages in ways that the creator wants them to deliver. Usually, children s films contain a variety of implicit messages, because the language should be simple, and in turn, it should contain fun elements. However, one of the best ways to create stereotypes in culture is the use of children s movies, because people build their personality and critical thinking in their first years of life. An example of this is the movie The Lion King, where the characters are animals, but also each one plays a role of a human being within a society. This film shows a patriarchal and sexist society, where men have all the power not only in government but also within their own family; women, by contrast, have a secondary role always being focused on the service of men and their children. • 35. The Dilemmas Faced by the Roman Catholic Church Today Dilemmas Facing Roman Catholic Church Today: The Roman Catholic Church has faced several dilemmas or challenges in today s society, particularly on moral issues. Most of the dilemmas that the Catholic Church faces today are rooted in its Roman traditions, doctrines, and dogmas. Some of these main dilemmas include concerns on whether to be more conservative or liberal in religious direction, how to deal with the pedophilia crisis, and how to tackle the shortage of priests. As these dilemmas have continued to be a serious challenge to the Catholic Church, there is a great need to find the appropriate solutions to them. The Catholic Church has been characterized by a long simmering hostility between conservative and liberal members of the church regarding the need for the church to change in the wake of Vatican II. Consequently, the conservative Catholics have faulted the unsteady post Vatican II perspective that has nearly made everything permissible whereas the liberals claimed that there is a prejudiced hierarchy that seeks to sweep unpleasant truths under the rug (Allen, 2012). While many conservative Catholics would like the existing teachings to remain in place, the liberals are in support of drastic changes to the church teachings on several issues like marriage and sexual matters. The other major dilemma facing the Roman Catholic Church today is the pedophilia crisis, especially on how to deal with it. This Church has been unsettled by numerous and credible ... • 38. King Louis XIV, On Social Order And Absolute Monarchy After suppressing revolts by the Fronde in 17th century France, King Louis XIV had become the supreme ruler of the country. Without any challenges to his power, he was able to practice absolutism, which is the concentration of power and symbolic authority in royal hands. With this power Louis XIV had many great achievements in France. He improved the tax system, religion, trading, and court life.1 Jean Domat was a juror who was supported by the king himself. He dedicated his life to explain and justify the importance of the role of absolutism in French society. The culmination of this work can be found in his legal digest, On Social Order and Absolute Monarchy. Many interesting ideas about the theory of absolutism can be found in his writings. It explains the essential environment for absolutism, defines the origin and necessity of government, and demonstrates the duties of the sovereign. Domat s theory first begins with the idea of a perfect society. It is one with a comfortable style of living for all in the nation. For this to occur, a state of order is necessary. Everyone needs to know their rank and work together to contribute to society. Specific roles are given to each person, and ideally they will all work to the best of their ability. It is in this environment that absolutism thrives. Relationships between the government and the governed are easier to foster when everyone has a duty and they do not question their place in the community. Because Domat gave this basis for absolutism with his idea of teamwork in a state, he is able to justify the rest of his theory. After providing the basis, Domat justifies the role of government. He starts by stating that all men are essentially equal by nature. This seems like it would argue against absolute power of government, but he goes on to find the differences in society. They actually appear in the form of things like social status, occupation, and relationships built. These factors are what gives rank and society, which in return prove the need of government. According to Domat, these dynamics also arise in nature. He explains, this distinction leads to a first kind of government in families, where children owe obedience to their parents, who head the ...
