Analysis on Behind the Veil by Dhu’l Nun Ayyoub Essay
In the short story From Behind the Veil, written by Dhu l Nun Ayyoub, the author changes how we
feel about the main character throughout the sequencing of the plot. We as the readers learn more
about how the protagonist really thinks coupled with what her motives are. The author also presents
language that clearly expresses how the protagonist feels and uses examples to show an overall theme
in the story. In the exposition we meet our protagonist who is a young women of Islam who wears the
traditional veil that muslim women are advised to wear under the law of the Quran were it says, And
tell the believing women to reduce some of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose
their adornment except that which necessarily ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is an interesting exception to the stereotypical and usual relationship between a Muslim man and
woman. Usually the man would have the majority of power in the relationship, but the protagonist has
made the relationship on her terms only. We also learn from the narrator that the protagonist has a
strong disposition. We can conclude that she seems to exude some power . We also learn that her
father thinks highly of her and feels that she is intelligent , well brought up , and obviously knows the
value of traditions and respects them. In the climax, we start to have a very different view of our
protagonist. We learn that she might not be as genuine as we think she is. The climax is after her father
reads the newspaper article a man submitted about a woman who revealed herself to him. She goes to
her room and talks to her veil stating that she despises the veil, how she uses it only to keep men away
from her, she doesn t care about her veil at all, she feels nothing for it, she defies it, and how she feels
that other women say they wear the veil to preserve their virginity, honor, and good morals, but if they
were honest about why they wore the veil it would be for no reason but to cover their flaws and
scandals. This is extremely surprising to the reader because from what we thought of her before she
was a girl who wore the veil as a symbol of good morals when

Societal Norms And Values Essay
Societal norms and values are key aspects of everyone s life today. Throughout this assignment I will
discuss the nature of norms, values and socialisation before explaining how norms and values are
transmitted through the socialisation process.
Firstly, I will address what norms are. Norms are expectations about appropriate conduct which act as
commonplace rules for social interaction. Because the term refers to the expectations of one socially,
norms entail the presence of legitimacy, consent and prescription. (Penguin dictionary of Sociology)
Norms are the actions perceived by society be it either by informal assumption on an individual s
general behaviour or a formal expectation, for example law. (Punch, S., Marsh, I., Keating, M. and ...

Sociology 3rd Edition)
This quote ties in perfectly with my next point, that being how norms and values are transmitted
through the socialisation process.
As aforementioned socialisation can be distinguished as process by which we become social beings by
interacting others. This concept is reliant on the resources such as family, work and community. It
relies on these resources so that it can provide us with choices to shape our identity by becoming
members of different groups. (Punch, S., Marsh, I., Keating, M. and Harden, J. (2013) Sociology:
Making Sense of Society, 5th ed., Harlow: Pearson, p.23)
From the moment we are capable of interaction as a baby we are reliant on our parents to teach us the
methods so socialisation. Therefore, a certain number of norms are instilled in us from our parents
alone. As we progress to the secondary stage of socialisation our peers influence the norms we
acquire. By broadening our social circle, we in turn increase the number of norms we are subjected to.
Similarly, with values, the more we are subjected to, the more we

Ancient Near East History

How did the Persian kings control/govern the various parts of their realm? Consider at least three
different geographical areas
The origins of Cyrus the Great are rather unclear and highly disputed. Multiple accounts range from
him being the grandson of the Median King Astyages to being the son of a poor Persian family of a
disreputable clan. Although there can be no certainty, as with most everything from the ancient world,
it is widely believed that, by heredity, he became the sub king of a Persian land called Persis, under
the rule of the Median king Astyages. (Cook 1983, 25 26) He quickly expanded his power by unifying
all of the Persian lands under ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After conquering Media, Babylonia, and Egypt, for instance, Cyrus The Great and Cambyses II would
make a personal union with the peoples of these countries. They would crown themselves according to
the local customs, and created normal conditions for the development of the economy and transit
trade. They retained, with moderate altercations, the local political structures in these countries, and
offered the peoples a large degree of local self government. These first two kings proved to have not
created a very well structured empire, however, which led to the multiple uprisings from 523 521
BCE. (Gershevitch 1985, 502 504) From there, Darius I, the King who proceeded Cambyses II, found
a more stable balance by putting in place a more organized administrative system that would not
undergo any fundamental changes up until the demise of the Achaemenid Empire.
The system that Darius I put in place split the empire up into roughly twenty satrapies that would be
governed by satraps. The satraps were responsible for collecting the annual tribute set by the king,
drafting people to the army, and maintaining justice and security within their satrapy. The satraps
would also have an armed force at their disposal to keep everybody within their satrapy in line.
(Gershevitch 1985, 267) Inspectors would also periodically visit each satrapy to

How Security Design Patterns Are Important Tools For...
A security pattern describes a specific security problem which arises in a given context and provides a
sound, time tested solution for the problem (Schumacher, Fernandez Buglioni, Hybertson,
Buschmann, Sommerlad, 2006). Security design patterns are important tools for secure software
engineering. In this section, we give a review of the literature on security design patterns. The survey
covers patterns published at the PLoP (Pattern Languages of Programs) conferences, the hub of the
patterns research community, pattern books, scientific databases as IEEE Xplore, the ACM Digital
Library, SpringerLink, etc., and papers from prominent indexing systems. We focus on three
categories of literary works related to this domain:
i. Patterns and pattern catalogs ii. Pattern classification iii. Survey papers
3.2.1 Patterns and Pattern catalogs
In their seminal paper on security patterns, Yoder and Barcalow (1997) present a case for the
importance of security in applications designed for the corporate environment. They present a
collection of 7 patterns which can be applied during system design and implemented late in the
development. These patterns are : SINGLE ACCESS POINT which helps solve back door access to
sensitive data by limiting application entry to one single entry point. The SECURE ACCESS LAYER
pattern enables secure communication between an application and external systems. The CHECK
POINT pattern provides for user validations in order to prevent security breaches.

Nigeria, The Niger Delta and the Nigerian Government
Nigeria might be rich in resources; its population lives in poverty. With a Multidimensional Poverty
Index (MPI) of .31, it was ranked number 157 out of the 186 United Nations (UN) member states in
2012. Also, according to the World Bank, the poverty headcount ratio was 68%, meaning this part of
the population lived with less than $1.25 a day in 2010.
The Niger Delta is one of the nine states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It counts about 20 million
people and around 70 000 km² of land. The region is one of the most prominent wetlands in the world.
Oil has produced about $600 billion since the 1960 s.
Despite its wealth in resources, the majority of the people live under poor conditions. To counter this
poverty, the Nigerian government has set up several commissions in the past. The most prominent are
the Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC) and the Niger Delta
Development Commission (NDDC).
The OMPADEC was established in 1993 and focused on the development of the Niger Delta Region
(NDR). It however failed due to factors as corruption, mismanagement and non sufficient funding.
Hereafter, the NDDC was to replace the OMPADEC. It would create socio economic development in
the NDR. The NDDC set up various projects in the region. However, due to the poor structure of the
organisation and inadequate funding the NDDC have

Charles Baxter s The Art Of Subtext
A story is only as good as the way it is told. The way a writer uses his or her words to say something is
just as important as what they don t say. Charles Baxter, author of plethora of books and university
teacher, writes a craft book that goes deeper than the surface of writing and deeper than the words
written down. In Charles Baxter s The Art of Subtext, he discusses how authors can use the words
they do write just as much to express what they don t write.
The first chapter, The Art of Staging claims Staging in fiction involves putting characters in specific
strategic positions in the scene so that some unvoiced nuance is revealed. (Baxter 13) This includes
the character s standing positions, their proximity to each other, specific gestures and facial
expressions, which give the reader more insight to the scene and the characters without explicitly
saying so. This goes hand in hand with the setting of the atmosphere where atmosphere sets the
dominant tone or the mood of a story. The atmosphere can be in reference to the setting or the
characters themselves. Here, the reader is to read between the lines. The key to this is using a lot of
detail which is crucial to providing the information.
This is something important that I need to incorporate in my own writing. More detail in my writing
concerning the unspoken things will allow the reader to see the evolution of the narrator s state of
mind. A twitch of an eye or how close my antagonist stands to his or her

Tariff In America
Tariffs have a great need to be fully increased across the board, first of all. If the tariffs were more
costly the money it will costs to outsource the services or products sold by companies will eventually

companies goods and services. I understand it s always better way to have any country use their own
locals to do the work in general to get things instead of getting out of the foreign companies to make

company we worked for leased the machine for 2 workers to run not so safely as we did it here in the
states, with all the rules we have to follow for safety. Without the tariffs we would continue to lose
jobs to other countries with cheaper labor cost. It is believed that it will continue to add to the
unemployment rate and increase the money lost from the U.S. economy and not coming back. Tariffs
have proven that they can keep the jobs in the U.S. and the money will stay too, which will be spent
on in stores, in local restaurants, housing, entertainment, groceries and other stuff. In the past and at
times some still think of tariffs as a bad word. Yes things here in America are better by far taxes, the

Produce an environmental audit, and report assessing the potential environmental impact of the
proposed project on the local Natural Environment.
There are different potential environmental impacts when building the new school on the local natural
environment. Most of which are positive impacts however some may be negative. For the project to
get the go ahead it needs a number of positive impacts on the local environment with minimal
negative impacts. Before the project begins, a run through of what impacts on the local environment
are brought up as the project goes through its construction stages. Some of the potential impacts on the
local natural environment that are positive are: reduction of pollution to the local area; less waste
produced from the project.
Reduction of pollution to the local area
A potential impact on the local natural environment due to the construction of the new school could be
the reduction of pollution to the local land.
At the moment little pollution is in the local environment due to very little building and life being in
the area. The local environment needs to be protected as best as possible. If a normal school was to be
built it could increase the pollution to the local natural environment. This would then make the local ...

council tax of the locals. Also adding to a reduction of household rubbish collected by the council,

Use Of Imagery Of Blood And Water In Macbeth
Stage 1 English
Macbeth: text analysis
How does imagery reinforce one or more of the main themes of Macbeth?
In the play Macbeth, Shakespeare relates the imagery of blood and water, which are symbolized in the
major themes of the play. Images of blood and water are mainly shown together as one main symbolic
image of numerous themes. Each detail of imagery has an important symbol related to the major
themes of the play. Shakespeare s play is about Macbeth s power to become king, including the
murder of King Duncan and his continuous evil actions. After the witches tell him that he is going to
become king, he doesn t think about it but he decides to make it happen so he kills the current king,
and his best friend. Macbeth is married to Lady Macbeth who does encourage some of the killings, but
in the end she kill s herself. Macbeth written by William Shakespeare expresses the themes of
ambition, guilt, consequence and the super natural, which is reinforced by the use of imagery. ... Show

Ambition is shown throughout the play, in many different ways. Between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth
there is a series of deaths. Both Macbeth and lady Macbeth are ambitious characters. The first
reference to blood is when Macbeth sees the dagger floating in the air which then leads him to King
Duncan s room and he sees the blood. Towards the beginning of the play, Macbeth is described in
reeking wounds blood then becomes a recurring image. The phrase come to my women s breasts and
take my milk for gall reveals her strong ambition as a character. The symbol of blood represents
murder and death. Shakespeare takes the theme of Ambition through the use of imagery within Lady
Macbeth s speech as she expresses her extreme lengths she will go for her husband to gain the throne

How Does Shakespeare Present Commitment In Romeo And Juliet
Examine Shakespeare s presentation of commitment within a love relationship in Romeo and Juliet.
William Shakespeare wrote over 400 plays during his life during the Elizabethan era, of which one of
his more famous plays is Romeo and Juliet. People from all classes went to watch his plays at the
Globe theatre where seating was available to suit the various classes. His plays examined several
issues that occurred to Elizabethan society, at a time when loyalty, religion and family were
paramount. This essay will be looking at the theme of commitment and how it was portrayed.
Shakespeare shows the theme of commitment in the play Romeo and Juliet by demonstrating
commitment to one another within a love relationship. This was demonstrated within the lines If thou
dost love me, pronounce it faithfully which is followed later in that dialogue with Lady by blessed
moon I swear. This shows commitment by swearing at the moon of their love, which is an example of
pathetic fallacy due to the fact that this scene occurs at night. This is pathetic fallacy as the
relationship is secretive which has connotations of darkness / night. The word moon can have several
meanings in this context. The first meaning moon can have is of one where it provides light in the
darkness which as previously discussed may be referring to the secrecy of their relationship. A second
meaning is that the darkness represents the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets; whilst the
moon is representing

Masseter Muscle Research Paper
Masseter Muscle
The masseter muscle is a thick, strong muscle that functions as one of the major muscles of
mastication (2,8). The muscle arises from the zygomatic arch and zygomatic bone and inserts
inferiorly on the external surface of the ramus of the mandible. The masseter has superficial and deep
heads. The superficial head travels distally and posteriorly, attaching near the angle of the mandible.
The smaller deep head inserts to the upper region of the ramus of the mandible (2).
The masseter is a powerful elevator of the mandible and provides the force necessary to chew
efficiently. The primary function of the masseter, therefore, is to develop large forces between the
molars for effective grinding and crushing of food (8). As the ... Show more content on

Bilateral contraction of the medial pterygoid produces elevation and protrusion of the mandible, while
unilateral contraction produces contralateral excursion (8). Along with the masseter muscle, it forms a

Sandusky Case Summary
Poor inventory management allowed the storage of old wine products and promotional items that led
to a buildup of out dated inventory. Poor communication between department managers in marketing
and production also led to the mess. The production department started producing a large volume of
inventory before the marketing department was ready to begin its promotional campaign. All of this
was combined with the current inventory.
Which inventory cost components are missing in the calculation of total inventory cost?
The inventory cost components that are missing are, the cost of storage and inventory risks. The cost
of storing an outdated product line adds to the overall cost of inventory. This takes away from the

This shows that the company has lost revenue. If not careful it can also be considered inventory fraud.
This can happen if you show that inventory as part of your net worth and then it no longer exists
reducing the projected value of the company (2).
Some inventory can be salvaged by selling it at a discounted price or, in Sandusky s case relabeling
the promotional wine products. There are also some components of the products that can be salvaged.
The bottles from the wine that were improperly stored can be emptied, sterilized, and then reused.
This would help to reduce the price of inventory purchase costs.
Inventory write off can be explained but never justified. Unless the case is fire or natural disaster there
is no excuse. If the company has proper inventory management then the product will be sent to
market. It will not sit in storage until it becomes out dated obsolete. Improper record keeping and
inventory control does not justify loss of revenue by discarding product.
How would you change the current inventory management practices (including inventory
classification schemes) to ease storage space

What Are The Causes Of The Boxer Rebellion
The boxer rebellion−the fight between China and Western countries−has been a debate since the end
of 1901. Many people have been wondering how the war happened and what were the reasons that
lead to it. Although many researchers have showed the causes they have found, there will be other
research that disagrees with them. This paper mainly supports the claim that suggested the three major
causes of the boxer rebellion, and refutes the point that the new technologies and innovations that the
West had introduced was not one of the causes. It will define three main causes that leaded to the
boxer uprising which were the personal and religious belief of Chinese people, the rise of Christianity,
and the support of Qing dynasty. As the result of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To be more specific, the new innovations such as trains, steamboats, and weaving machines made
Chinese people lived more comfortable and sociable with outsiders. While this position is popular, the
Western machines were the reason that made people in China lived uncomfortable, and created
disputes in the country. To illustrate, weaving machines introduced by Westerners had taken control
over China s cloth industry. As the machines were faster and more efficiency than normal humans,
many people in China, especially women, began to lose their jobs (Boxer rebellion, nd.). Furthermore,
because of the construction of British train transportation, Chinese people began to lose their lands to
the government (Theroux, 1989). Besides, when Chinese people started losing their lands, people felt
threatened from the changes that Westerners made. In the mean time, when the boxer rebellion had
occurred, destroying railroads that foreigners built was one of their aims (Tamura et al, 1997). Thus,
although there were some advantages in the new innovations and technologies that Westerners had

How Does Thomas Hobbes Use Fear In The Leviathan
In Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes defines fear as aversion with opinion of hurt from the object (30). This
aversion that humans experience plays a fundamental role in Hobbes understanding of humanity and
society. More specifically, in the state of nature the fear of death sustains a constant state of war that
motivates men to seek peace under a common power called the Leviathan. However, the function of
fear in the Leviathan differs from its function in the state of nature, in that men in the Leviathan
maintain peace not only out of fear of other men, but also out of fear of the common power. This
understanding of fear mirrors Machiavelli s as outlined in The Prince, in which Machiavelli contends
that leaders should use fear to secure their subjects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reason for this discrepancy is that desire for power and fear of death balance each other out in the
Leviathan. More precisely, Hobbes describes men as having a perpetual and restless desire of power
after power, that ceaseth only in death and a fear of oppression that disposes them to seek aid by
society because there is no other way by which a man can secure his life and liberty (58 59). Hobbes
illustrates how in men, the desire for power and the fear of death are in a tug of war contest, and men
ultimately find the most benefit within the Leviathan. The Leviathan acquires power because the fear
of death authorizes it to, since the Leviathan controls the life and liberty of the people (127). Hobbes
elaborates that men who choose their sovereign do it for fear of one another and that they subject
themselves to him they are afraid of (127). Essentially, Hobbes postulates that the fear of the state of
nature, in which men live in constant war, has a stronger influence upon men than does the fear of the
Leviathan. The Leviathan keeps all men in awe, and they subject themselves to even the most
tyrannical dictator in exchange for removal from the state of nature. Therefore, fear in the Leviathan
compels men to obey their sovereign in order to remain within the realm of

Wessex Tales Essay
Wessex Tales
This essay is about the times and the society of the 19th Century and how Thomas Hardy s characters
were affected. The five stories I will be writing about are:
1. The Withered Arm
2. The Son s Veto
3. Tony Kytes the Arch Deceiver
4. Absent Mindedness in a parish choir
5. The Melancholy Hussar of the German Legion
In the 19th century there were a lot of divisions between people eg. Class. A girl from a high class
could not marry a boy from the middle class. Not what you call a gentlemen (The Son s Veto). Also it
was like a sin if you married someone from a lower class than you. It was social suicide if a parson
was to marry his maid (The Son s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A woman could not do anything disloyal like commit adultery but a man could commit adultery and
no one would say anything. I have privately married a young dear belle (Melancholy Hussar). Age
difference did not really matter then a man could marry a woman half his age. Years younger than he
(Withered Arm). And More like 40 (Withered Arm).
People of the 19th Century were very religious. They feared God and would not take his name in vain.
This is an insult to me, my family, my visitors and God Almighty (Absent Mindedness in a Parish
Choir). The stories were set in farms or small villages where a high class person would be a farmer
(Farmer Lodge Withered Arm) or a Parson (Mr.Twycott The Sons Veto).
There were not many facilities available in the 19th Century for example: Their transport facility was
a horse and cart or they used wagons. The poorer people had to walk it to the places they wanted to
go. Driving home the waggon (Tony Kytes). It was a long walk (Withered Arm).
The churches were quite poor because they had no source of heat. This afternoon we ll have
something in our insides to make us warm (Absent Mindedness in a Parish Choir). Which means they
will drink brandy to help them keep warm because there were no heaters. Also bands/choirs used to

Module Leader/Lecturer: Marc Rose ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this essay is to examine, the notion of music being a part of a deaf individual s life
may seem contradictory, but there is evidence that music is and has been a part of many deaf people s
lives. Music is and has been a part of the Deaf culture, including, but not limited to, Deaf musicians,
utilising music to teach speech. The primary purpose of this thesis was to explore the relation between
Deaf culture and music and examine the role of music in the deaf culture and to relate the findings to
current practices in music education programs for hearing impaired students historically and presently.
We also look at the introduction of sign language interpreters in live vocal music performances as well
pre recorded shows and music videos and also how it is being adopted in the music industry.
Secondary purposes of the study were to accumulate data of ways in which the music industry has
provided for the Deaf Communities by organising concerts and raves for them.

Comparing Frankenstein And The Creature In Mary Shelley s...
Frankenstein and the Creature s relationship directly parallels their subconscious understanding of
God. Whereas the Creature sees each of them fulfill distinct roles of Creator and creation, Victor feels
the duality of being both created and Creator. Paradise Lost indoctrinated the Creature with its own
testimony of the creation story and filled his subconscious with ideas of conflict and betrayal. Victor s
exposure is consequence of the Christian dominant culture of Europe in his time. From a
psychoanalytical perspective, Victor struggles to identify himself as the god his id suggests or as the
man that his super ego insists he is. Even so, the war the Creature is waging dwarfs this identity crisis.
The Creature feels that he must physically fight the spiritual battle that exists between God and his
creations, whether that is mankind or Satan himself. In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein the actions of
both Victor and the Creature are wrought by their understanding of the Judeo Christian creation. ...

relation to his creation. He cannot claim the power nor omniscience of God, but he also feels set apart
because of the creature he had cast among mankind, and endowed with the will and power to effect

Construction Of Roads For Black Cotton Soil
INTRODUCTION :
Construction of roads in black cotton soil areas has been problematic due to their low bearing capacity
and the detrimental effects of volume instability arising from swelling and shrinkage characteristics of
such soils during wet and dry seasons.
Such problems assume greater acuteness where the water table is high and clayey subsoil stratum is
thick.
A Perfect example of a case history study can be considered from Gudivada Bantumilli State
Highway, which passes through a plain terrain surrounded with paddy fields, and constructed on a
black cotton soil embankment of 3mts height. The entire stretch of the road is located in the delta
region of Godavari and Krishna rivers, of the south eastern part of India. The pavement on the
embankment was in a state of extreme distress. Lateral shift and settlement in embankment were the
common soil failure features observed. TWO METHODOLOGIES USING LIME :
Method 1 Injection of Lime Slurry
Method 2 Placement of Lime Piles
Method 1 : To verify the efficacy of the technique, laboratory experiments were conducted at Central
Road Research Institute
India on a test embankment of 2.5m x 2.0m x 2.5m made from the locally available silty soil having a
dry density of 16 kN/m2. Lime slurry was injected in one side of the embankment. The injected lime
contained 30% lime by weight in the mixture of lime water.

Sigmund Freud s Theory Of Development
Emily Bradshaw
Professor David Iannaccone
Introduction to Psychology
December 4th, 2014
Abstract
In this research paper, I explained what Sigmund Freud s psychosexual theory of development is and
why it is important for the developing child to overcome said conflicts. I also talked about the
different effects of not overcoming the conflicts Freud had determined that would lead to adult
behaviors.
Over the years, Sigmund Freud has created many theories involving many different ideas in the
psychological world. One theory that stood out to me throughout our journey in introduction to
psychology is Freud s developmental theory. Freud s development theory is the influence that sexual
growth has on personality development from birth to adult life, with the phases of sexual maturation
designated as oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital. (psychosexual development. (n.d.). The
American Heritage® Stedman s Medical Dictionary. ) This theory stood out to me the most because I
feel that Freud has a very unique idea of how we, as humans, develop and how almost every stage
refers to a different growth, yet all involve sexual ideas. Sigmund Freud was said to believe that once
a child reached adulthood at eighteen years of age that they were fully grown. Many psychologists
have went against this theory however to discover that humans do not stop growing at eighteen. All
the stages of psychosexual development have a conflict in which has to be resolved or the child will
have

Diego Velázquez – Las Meninas (1656-57)
Introduction
Las Meninas was Velázquez s largest oeuvre measuring 3.21 m by 2.81 m (Umberger 96). Velázquez s
masterpiece is one that draws sharp criticism ranging from those who find this work as a complete
piece with its pictorial features prominent in the artwork, to those who find it hard to interpret its
content conclusively (Ancell 159 160; Snyder 542+; Steinberg 48; Bongiorni 88). Despite such
disparities, Velázquez s masterpiece was able to project a day in the life of the royal family while at
the same time achieving his artistic ideal. This work explores this artwork in light of the royal family
and personal gratification by Velázquez as a celebrated artist.

The first maid of honor is Don ̀a María Augustustina Sarmiento. María offers Margarita a drink while
kneeling down as a sign of her paying homage to the position Margarita holds in the royal family. The
second maid of honor is Don ̀a Isabel de Velasco stands inclined towards the princess. Isabel s glare is
towards the same direction Margarita is facing yet Isabel s face is not affixed to the viewer s point of
view but rather facing down. This captures her as a servant rather than a member of the royal family.
Another interesting perspective captured in the painting is facial elevation and position. The meninas
heads are at different elevations to that of Margarita. Their attention is towards Margarita yet their
perspectives are different. María s eye view is higher than Margarita s eye view yet the painter makes
it appear as if María s eyes are looking up on Margarita. Moreover, Isabel s elevation appears to pay
homage to Margarita by her angle of inclination, eye direction and facial expression. .
On the foreground, the painting captures two dwarfs. The adult dwarf is Maribárbola while the midget
is the daughter Nicolás Pertusato (Umberger 97). Nicolás has her foot on the back of the dog, which
appears unperturbed despite the presence of human foot on its back. This calmness shows a well
trained dog of the royal family whose presence is calming. The dog appears to be trained to be a child

Computer Science In Education Essay
Only 5% of United States high schools teach computer science, the study of the principles and use of
computers, despite its critical importance. Even as the enrollment in science, technology, engineering,
and math classes have increased in the past 20 years, the number of students enrolled in computer
science has actually decreased. This can be attributed to the neglect exhibited by schools on computer
science. In these 20 years, 1 billion computers have been built which makes computer science
integrated : so baked into human life that it is not surprising to encounter, with social, technological,
and futuristic aspects of the world. Unlike other integrated disciplines such as English or math,

Universities are already starting to require computer science classes, but this creates the question:
How should computer science courses be implemented in education before University? An optimal
solution must teach social problem solving skills, increase the functionality of technology, and provide
an understanding of the future. The time at which computer science is introduced must also be
considered to ensure students have enough prior background knowledge in other related disciplines
and a basic understanding of what computer can and cannot do. In order to properly implement
computer science in education, it should be required in high school education and teach the ubiquitous
relationship that computer science has with the social, technological, and futuristic aspects of the
world.
Computer science is bound to have social impacts because of its ubiquitous nature. The most
influential of these impacts is the introduction of computational thinking. Computational Thinking is a
process that generalizes a solution to open ended problems. Open ended problems encourage full,
meaningful answers based on multiple variables, which are derived using abstraction and automation.
When solving open ended problems, computer scientists abstract notions from both the physical and
theoretical worlds. Unlike mathematical notions which only consider theory, computer science
combines both

Charles Darwin s Survival Of The Sickest By Dr. Sharon...
Throughout modern day society, many diseases that humans would consider harmful and just simply
and outright, fatal, were actually beneficial to our ancestors, centuries ago. Granted, there are
definitely many diseases today that are killing millions of people, but these same diseases that exist
have done the opposite for our ancestors. Many of these diseases such as diabetes, and
hemochromatosis that we consider deadly provide us a follow up question: Why was this disease
selected into our gene pool? And this question will date us back to centuries ago when our ancestors
had actually benefited from such diseases as a crucial way to survive. The father of evolution, Charles
Darwin describes his theory behind natural selection. Natural ... Show more content on

Essentially, iron is what allows almost every form of life to metabolize and function. In fact, our
bodies body has several mechanisms that prevent access to iron to pathogens and other infectious
bacteria thrive on iron that may harm our bodies known as the acute phase response. The author
describes this as he states the bloodstream is flooded with illness fighting proteins, and, at the same
time, iron is locked away to prevent biological invaders from using it against us (7). So us readers can
take away the idea that iron is crucial for our bodies. So how could potentially accumulating too much
iron affect our health? That s when hemochromatosis comes along. Our bodies assumes that the
person is lacking iron in their system so they continually absorb the iron in the intestine. Not only that,
don t forget that bacteria and diseases also rely on iron to grow and accumulate. This can cause cancer
cells to grow and spread continuously without stopping if it consumes our iron. Some of the symptoms
of hemochromatosis are shown as the author observes from Aran Gordon, a natural long distance
runner. From the book Moalem describes it as He was tired all the time. His joints hurt. His heart
seemed to skip a funny beat. He told his running partner he wasn t sure he could go on with training,
with running at all (1). He was eventually diagnosed through

Similarities Between Theatre And Hospitality Industry
Comparing theatre and the hospitality industry is like comparing apples and oranges they have a
surprising amount of similarities while retaining their own individual characteristics. Theatre is the art
of performing on stage. Employees have a wide range of skills in order to produce a performance that
guests will enjoy. On the opposite side of the spectrum, hospitality involves restaurant and hotel
management, event planning, and tourism. Much of the industry is centered around providing the best
experience possible for customers, as is theatre. While hospitality workers are not actors or crew
members, employees in both industries strive to provide the best experience for their guests. Both
theatre and hospitality offer intangible goods and services, require a great amount of practice outside
of the classroom, and put an emphasis on design. Theatre and hospitality both focus on intangible
goods and services to provide the best experience for their guests. Theatre is all about the experience;

Identifying The Unknown Bacteria From A Mixed Culture
Identification of Enterobacter Aerogenes

Unknown #19
The purpose of this study is to identify an unknown bacterium from a mixed culture. We identified the
unknown bacteria through different biochemical tests and identified the many metabolic capabilities of
the bacteria. Studying and discovering unknown bacteria is very important in the health field as it may
lead to new medicines and innovations for current, existing diseases as well as any upcoming diseases.
The discovery of unknown bacteria is very useful in the pharmaceutical industry, as most of the
products prepared are made based on these unknown organisms.
The biochemical tests used to identify the unknown bacteria included: phenol red broth test (glucose,
lactose, and sucrose), methyl red and Voges Proskauer test, citrate test, indole test, H2S production
test, urea test and motility test. The PR broths are used to differentiate members of Enterobacteriaceae
and to distinguish these members from other gram negative rods. The PR broths are useful in
determining a bacterium s fermentation abilities. If the bacterium is able to utilize the carbohydrate,
then the acid production from fermentation lowers pH, which in turn turns the broth yellow. However,
if the bacterium is unable to utilize the carbohydrate, but does utilize the peptone, which produces the
by product ammonia, the medium will have a rise in pH turning the broth pink.
The methyl red and Voges Proskauer tests

Alexis De Tocqueville Democracy In America Summary
Democracy in America was Alexis De Tocqueville s observation of American political character. His
1830s view on the laws are different now in the 21st century. De Tocqueville adds his view of
property, power, and religion. He states that in 1830 the democracy which governs American
communities appears to be rapidly rising into power in Europe thus became the idea behind
Democracy in America. I figuratively sat down with Alexis De Tocqueville to talk about his views in
Democracy in America and told him how different or similar some are to our democracy now. De

The Court Case Of Powell Vs. Alabama During The 1930s
Supreme Court Case
The United States attention was captivated on the Supreme Court Case of Powell vs Alabama during
the 1930s. During the time period, this case revealed the brutal treatment towards African Americans
more than any other event. The case began on March 25, 1931, when a group of young white and
African American youths were traveling on a train to find a job. A physical encounter broke out
between them and the white youths were thrown out of the train. Then they reported the incident to a
stationmaster, who stopped the train. The police arrived to gather the nine African Americans and
brought them to jail. Nine young African Americans were recognized as the Scottsboro boys . They
were accused of rape of two white women on that train. The white jury convicted eight of them, all
except one, the youngest at 12 years old, and were sentenced to death. These youths were falsely
charged with raping two white women in Alabama. Although there was no evidence that linked the
African Americans to the white women, they were still charged with sexual assault. The two women
fearing prosecution for their sexual relationship with the white men agreed to testify against the black
youths. The Supreme Court Case of Powell vs Alabama is crucial in both Civil Rights history and in
the evolution of the Constitution.

Migration Problems for Puerto Ricans
Puerto Rico is a Spanish speaking region made up of one big island and a few smaller islands in the
Caribbean Sea. It belongs to the U.S as an unincorporated territory. It was a place where the country s
constitution does not apply by default. Puerto Ricans are considered Americans. If you are
automatically born in Puerto Rico, you are automatically a U.S citizen. They use U.S passports to
travel internationally. Some people are inclined to view the Puerto Rican experience as a historical
repetition of earlier migrations to the United States. However, the migration experience of Puerto
Ricans to the United States is more complex, as well as one of a kind. Similarities do exist between
the migration of Puerto Ricans and that of other groups, however, no other ethnic group has shared the
tribulations of the Puerto Rican population. Their experience is different from that of anyone else.
When Puerto Ricans migrated to the United States they did it in two major waves. The first wave of
emigration occurred in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The second wave
occurred from the 1940s to the present. The workings of Bernando Vega and Jose Cruz deal with the
different generations of Puerto Ricans that these two waves brought to the United States. While Vega
discusses the early emigration of Puerto Ricans to New York City, Cruz discusses the later emigration
of Puerto Ricans to Connecticut. Each author describes a different Puerto Rican experience in the

Bourgeoise In The Communist Manifesto
The Communist Manifesto first came about as a result of the economic and political chaos. Within the
document, it distinguishes the class stratification and the struggles within. Also within the Communist
Manifesto, it was clear that the production of development involving the lower class (proletariat) and
the middle class (bourgeoise) was its clear focus. The document then discusses the class struggles of
both the proletariat and the bourgeoise, and soon shows how one class over powers the other. This
would soon develop a new form of freedom for the rest of the society. The basic argument of the
Communist Manifesto is the struggles within the classes. The bourgeoise was commonly known as the
property owners and the proletariat was commonly known as the workers. The class struggle begins
with the bourgeoisies. The bourgeoisies society was created from the ruins of the feudal society, they
had the advantage of not only progression of industrial commerce, but they also had the advantage of
convenient transportation. Due to the advantage of transportation, the bourgeoisies were very popular
within distributions to other countries. This was a problem because due to the mass production and

The Sabbath is nearly forgotten and rarely observed in modern Christianity. Furthermore most don t
connect the lack of Sabbath observance to modern issues including the sense of being over worked,
over scheduled, and even over stimulated as Christians. Brueggemann explains the Sabbath was
created and established by God create for man to resist the constant inward pull toward the prevailing
values of the day (Brueggemann, 2016). Yet, the prevailing values and cultures seem to be winning for
most Christians. Scazzero explains the Sabbath observes comes from our core, our true sense of
spirituality, and isn t a suggestion, but in fact a command of God (Scazzero, 2006).
Unfortunately, I like most Christians, have suffered the same fate. Not only as a Christian person, but
as I pastor, I have regularly ignored the need for a Sabbath s rest and have suffered for it. As Barton
explains, if Sabbath isn t observed, often our illnesses become our Sabbath (Barton, 2015). These
words resonate deep within my own soul. Early in my ministry career while serving as Church plant
pastor and teaching pastor at a large Nazarene Church I hit an emotional and spiritual rock bottom. My
ministry suffered, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I am unable to commit one full 24 hour period toward these disciplines but each week, I spend one
morning block focusing on these habits. Many Monday I have spent fishing, golfing, or even walking
through the woods in time of quiet reflection. I always do things in solitude. The earlier in the
morning I often find it better to find solitude and time to be alone in prayer. When I return I nap, rest
as my body needs, and spend extended time in journaling, and personal study. I often spend time with
my family days that my kids are home from school. We ride bikes, play together and spend intentional

Food And Religion
Secondly, there are many variations in the kind of practices associated with food. These practices can
be traced down to their religious beliefs or from their cultural heritage. Again, given the diversity of
cultural backgrounds of the Indians in Singapore, it is expected that there will be a plethora of
practices that people follow. During the field trip to the Burhani mosque, I noticed how there is the
practice of eating salt before and after food. Further research reveals that Muslims believe that salt is
very beneficial for body health and it can protect you from many diseases if you take it right before
and after meals. This is just one example illustrating the influence religion has on eating habits. In
Hinduism several rituals are associated with food as well. They believe that ... Show more content on

As such, it is a very common sight among the Hindus who traditionally follow the custom of
sprinkling water on the food before eating their meal and it is believed to be an act of purification.
Cultural belief also affects the way people eat. For instance, among all the Indians, cutlery is not used
to eat food. They think that food is meant to be a whole sensory experience, so an eating habit in the
traditional Indian culture is to consume Indian foods such as curry, rice and naan bread by picking it
up using the hands. Bread is often used to scoop up the curry sauce and rice, and it is dipped into
traditional soups such as daal, a lentil based soup. Indian people are supposed to eat with their right
hands, because eating with the left hand is thought to be unclean. While it is still common to find
Singaporean Indians eating with hands, it is more likely they will do so in the comfort of their own
homes or in restaurants where they can wash their hands before and afterward. Many Indians now do
not eat with hands and use cutlery instead in public settings such as the food court or school canteens
because they may find it inconvenient and unhygienic to eat with hands in these

Characteristics Of Fragile X Syndrome
Fragile X Syndrome is a genetic disorder that causes intellectual disability and is very common. The
main characteristic is that children find it hard to process, understand information and work. You can
identify fragile x syndrome is babies miss important developmental steps, or if their are noticeable
physical traits like a different face or a big head circumference. This disability causes difficulty in
learning, development and in their behaviour social/behavioural.
It is more common in boys than girls, and usually more severe, but anyone can get it. Fragile X
Syndrome is the most common genetically inherited disability with affecting around 100000

The X chromosome is a sex chromosome which is normally seen in women as (XX) and in men (XY).
The FMR1 is a mental retardation gene. Its main function is to give a set of guidelines for the body in
making protein. When this gene is lengthened the process of making the protein is stopped and
involves brain development and other functions. Fragile X Syndrome can be passed down through
generations. A daughter born to a father who has FXS will be affected but the son will not be effected
as they do not inherit the fathers X chromosome. If the mother has FXS both genders have 50% of
inheriting this syndrome.
Management of Fragile X Syndrome can start with an individual assessment and designing medication
specifically made to help manage the effects of the syndrome. This medication can manage
behavioural and emotional issues commonly seen in FXS like anxiety, ADHD, OCD, and mood
instability. Management also includes for family members and people dealing with people with FXS
to understand the syndrome and how to get treatment and sort out education plans if they are to attend

Communication in Virtual Team
Katie M Drinkall (u06a1) Unit 6 Assignment 1 Communication in Virtual Team Capella University
September 26, 2013 Communication Communication is the activity of conveying information though
the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information by speech, visuals, signals, writings or behaviors
(Grosse, 2002). These processes are done over time, culture, and geographic boundaries, while this
has become a common practice for organizations and has give rise to the concept of globally dispersed
teams known as virtual teams (LaLonde, 2011). Communication is one of the most necessary
components of leadership, without communication there would be no teams, nobody would know
what their role on the team would be, there would be no procedures ... Show more content on

(Jarvenpaa amp; Leidner, 2006). When a virtual team is established there are many reasons why the
team was developed, the main reason would be physical locations from one another. When teams are
spread out over a long distance it can be very time consuming as well as costly to travel to that current
location for a meeting, while the meeting could be conducted via the internet and conference call.
Even though a team is only communicating in the virtual reality, there are many aspects of the first
initial meeting that need to be made to make the team as effective as possible. According to Nyström
amp; Asproth, once initial contact has been made there needs to be standards that need to be set for a
positive communication standard. Technology According to Pitts (p.3), Training is a very large issue
related to communication in a virtual team, either the team members do not have enough training
when it comes to technology or they are simply lacking the equipment needed to communication in a
professional manner. While LaLonde (p.8) states that the information technology provides the
influence necessary to support the development and expansion of new organizational infrastructure.
Since there are no training courses in trust (Grosse, 2002). There are however numerous carouses in
communication and how to improve

Example Of Observational Learning
The topic that I chose for this week is observational learning. Observational learning is learning by
others and imitating their behavior (Griggs, 2009, p. xx). Observational learning can help us when we
want to learn how to play sports, drive a car, or even learn to write letters. There are numerous things
we can acquire through observational learning. Many of us watched our mother and grandmother
bake, or even just cook when we were younger. We picked up many of the things that they did, this is
another example of observational learning.
We also learn attitudes and behaviors through observational learning. There are good models of
behavior. Models such as how to act appropriately in certain situations. On the other hand, there are
bad models. Those little negative traits, and habits we pick up from watching others. Often times we
hear people say: He/she did not have proper home training. This comes from ... Show more content on

If you have ever made a face at an infant and watched them try to imitate it, this is the observational
process at work. The same with a toddler who sees his parents folding laundry. Later the child will
grab some clothes and pretend to be folding them. A young boy watches another boy on the
playground get in trouble for hitting another child. He learns from observing this interaction that he
should not hit others (Cherry, 2016).
There are several factors that influence observational learning. They are attention: The person must
have their focus directed at the model. Retention: The observer must be able to code, and store
patterns so the data can be retrieved. Motor reproduction: Kinesthetic and neuromuscular patterns are
practiced with successive iterations until the model s behavior is approximated by the observer (
Albert Bandura Observational Learning, 2016). Lastly reinforcement and incentives: These send the
learner in the direction of wanting to pay attention, retain, and recall the action in

Does The Government Influence The Role Of The Church And...
While our Founding Fathers did not intend for the government to interfere with Church and family
roles, it is clear from America s history that this is exactly what has happened. Over the past few
centuries, the government has slowly taken over the roles of the Church and family. The role of the
Church is supposed to provide hope to the unreached and unsaved and be a place to grow closer to
God. The role of the family is to provide care for one another and connect to each other on a personal
level. The government has slowly been taking these roles away and replacing it with their own laws
and regulations. Over the years, the United States government has slowly usurped the roles of the
Church and family system and removed God from many things, causing Americans to put ... Show

This has changed to the government overtaking the roles of the Church and family. First of all, the
government has had a major impact on the Church. People have come to trust the government rather
than trusting the Church. There are many reasons for this including: if there are no jobs, people go to
the government s welfare; if you need food, you get food stamps instead of relying on the Church; and
if you need medical support, you get Medicaid instead of relying on the Church for support. The
government has also taken away the right of talking about God in the public school system. Instead of
schools allowing free speech, there are certain requirements about what can and cannot be talked
about. Since the government operates the public schools, they get to decide what to teach the kids,
even if it is not Spiritually related. Furthermore, giving taxes to the Church is hard to do when you
have to pay the Government about 30% of your income. The Bible tells us to give 10% of our income
to God. Overall, the government has replaced religion with science, and people put their trust in the
government rather than the Church. Next, the government has replaced the roles of the

You Are Living The American Dream
Imagine you are a nineteen year old living in the USA. You are homecoming queen, smart, and rather
popular. You have a perfect boyfriend and perfect friends. You have an amazing little brother and
parents who strive for your success. Monetarily wise, you have an abundance of wealth: a large house,
plenty of food, and a nice car. You are living the American dream. Now imagine that you are again
nineteen years old, but living in Uganda. You have little money, few belongings, no peers or mentors,
and no education past high school. Instead, you are a single, homeschooling mother to eight girls, all
under twelve years old, and all of which still struggle to even speak your language. Katie Davis
Majors, a missionary to Uganda and author ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Money that was well deserved by the citizens was stripped away by a corrupt government. It was a
cycle: The parents could not afford an education. With no education means no job to pay bills. They
became homeless. Their children were forced to grow up in depravity, with no schooling either, and
thus begins the cycle anew. Katie Majors began to realize that the children who didn t go to school
simply couldn t afford the mere USD $20 that it costed. To the undernourished and homeless families
on the street, that was a fortune. Majors decided to change that. She started Amazima Ministries,
dedicated to providing school funds, hot meals, and the Gospel. Amazima is still growing and
prospering today. She began assisting those who were infected with diseases such as AIDS and HIV,
as well as helping care for the injured. Agnes, a young girl who fell prey to injury, had been the sole
provider of her family at just nine years old. She, and her sisters, Mary and Scovia, were living alone
when Majors found them. Their father had died of disease and their mother had fled in fear of being a
single parent. It was on a fateful day that their crumbling house collapsed on Agnes. She was rushed to
the hospital but was not treated. In Uganda, those who are treated are only those who can pay. She had
no money nor an adult to pay, so she simply lay on the bed, waiting for medical care. Majors learned
about the girl s situation and rushed to the hospital

Terrorism Between Iraq And The United States Essay
After the gulf wars, a ceasefire was negotiated between the United Nations coalition and Iraq. During
the ceasefire, the United Nations became aware that Iraq had started a biological warfare program in
the 1980s, as well as a chemical warfare program. Upon further investigation, they found that these
programs had not continued after the war. As a result, the United States main focus moving forward
was the removal of the Saddam regime, their official foreign policy for years to come focused on this
goal. With the suspicions that Saddam Hussein had the abilities to acquire weapons of mass
destruction, the Bush administration going as far as to claim he already had them, the United States
and other countries began devising a plan of action. These countries strongly believed that Iraq was a
treat to its neighbors and the rest of the world, and that the only solution was to invade Iraq. The
United States invading Iraq in 2003 was a turning point in the reason why relationship between Iraq
and the United States is the way it is today.
In August of 2002, the Bush administration s position about Iraq had changed significantly. Prior to
this point, the United States and other western countries had been arming Iraq with weapons of every
type. The fact the United States and other countries had been arming Iraq with weapons, shows how
little they considered Iraq to be a threat. This quickly changed. A debate on invading Iraq, held by the
Senate Foreign Relations Committee, created

  • 2. Analysis on Behind the Veil by Dhu’l Nun Ayyoub Essay In the short story From Behind the Veil, written by Dhu l Nun Ayyoub, the author changes how we feel about the main character throughout the sequencing of the plot. We as the readers learn more about how the protagonist really thinks coupled with what her motives are. The author also presents language that clearly expresses how the protagonist feels and uses examples to show an overall theme in the story. In the exposition we meet our protagonist who is a young women of Islam who wears the traditional veil that muslim women are advised to wear under the law of the Quran were it says, And tell the believing women to reduce some of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which necessarily ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is an interesting exception to the stereotypical and usual relationship between a Muslim man and woman. Usually the man would have the majority of power in the relationship, but the protagonist has made the relationship on her terms only. We also learn from the narrator that the protagonist has a strong disposition. We can conclude that she seems to exude some power . We also learn that her father thinks highly of her and feels that she is intelligent , well brought up , and obviously knows the value of traditions and respects them. In the climax, we start to have a very different view of our protagonist. We learn that she might not be as genuine as we think she is. The climax is after her father reads the newspaper article a man submitted about a woman who revealed herself to him. She goes to her room and talks to her veil stating that she despises the veil, how she uses it only to keep men away from her, she doesn t care about her veil at all, she feels nothing for it, she defies it, and how she feels that other women say they wear the veil to preserve their virginity, honor, and good morals, but if they were honest about why they wore the veil it would be for no reason but to cover their flaws and scandals. This is extremely surprising to the reader because from what we thought of her before she was a girl who wore the veil as a symbol of good morals when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Societal Norms And Values Essay Societal norms and values are key aspects of everyone s life today. Throughout this assignment I will discuss the nature of norms, values and socialisation before explaining how norms and values are transmitted through the socialisation process. Firstly, I will address what norms are. Norms are expectations about appropriate conduct which act as commonplace rules for social interaction. Because the term refers to the expectations of one socially, norms entail the presence of legitimacy, consent and prescription. (Penguin dictionary of Sociology) Norms are the actions perceived by society be it either by informal assumption on an individual s general behaviour or a formal expectation, for example law. (Punch, S., Marsh, I., Keating, M. and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sociology 3rd Edition) This quote ties in perfectly with my next point, that being how norms and values are transmitted through the socialisation process. As aforementioned socialisation can be distinguished as process by which we become social beings by interacting others. This concept is reliant on the resources such as family, work and community. It relies on these resources so that it can provide us with choices to shape our identity by becoming members of different groups. (Punch, S., Marsh, I., Keating, M. and Harden, J. (2013) Sociology: Making Sense of Society, 5th ed., Harlow: Pearson, p.23) From the moment we are capable of interaction as a baby we are reliant on our parents to teach us the methods so socialisation. Therefore, a certain number of norms are instilled in us from our parents alone. As we progress to the secondary stage of socialisation our peers influence the norms we acquire. By broadening our social circle, we in turn increase the number of norms we are subjected to. Similarly, with values, the more we are subjected to, the more we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Griffin Bassman Professor Frame Ancient Near East History 12/5/14 How did the Persian kings control/govern the various parts of their realm? Consider at least three different geographical areas The origins of Cyrus the Great are rather unclear and highly disputed. Multiple accounts range from him being the grandson of the Median King Astyages to being the son of a poor Persian family of a disreputable clan. Although there can be no certainty, as with most everything from the ancient world, it is widely believed that, by heredity, he became the sub king of a Persian land called Persis, under the rule of the Median king Astyages. After conquering Media, Babylonia, and Egypt, for instance, Cyrus The Great and Cambyses II would make a personal union with the peoples of these countries. They would crown themselves according to the local customs, and created normal conditions for the development of the economy and transit trade. They retained, with moderate altercations, the local political structures in these countries, and offered the peoples a large degree of local self government. These first two kings proved to have not created a very well structured empire, however, which led to the multiple uprisings from 523 521 BCE. (Gershevitch 1985, 502 504) From there, Darius I, the King who proceeded Cambyses II, found a more stable balance by putting in place a more organized administrative system that would not undergo any fundamental changes up until the demise of the Achaemenid Empire. The system that Darius I put in place split the empire up into roughly twenty satrapies that would be governed by satraps. The satraps were responsible for collecting the annual tribute set by the king, drafting people to the army, and maintaining justice and security within their satrapy. The satraps would also have an armed force at their disposal to keep everybody within their satrapy in line. (Gershevitch 1985, 267) Inspectors would also periodically visit each satrapy to ... A security pattern describes a specific security problem which arises in a given context and provides a sound, time tested solution for the problem (Schumacher, Fernandez Buglioni, Hybertson, Buschmann, Sommerlad, 2006). Security design patterns are important tools for secure software engineering. In this section, we give a review of the literature on security design patterns. The survey covers patterns published at the PLoP (Pattern Languages of Programs) conferences, the hub of the patterns research community, pattern books, scientific databases as IEEE Xplore, the ACM Digital Library, SpringerLink, etc., and papers from prominent indexing systems. We focus on three categories of literary works related to this domain: i. Patterns and pattern catalogs ii. Pattern classification iii. Survey papers 3.2.1 Patterns and Pattern catalogs In their seminal paper on security patterns, Yoder and Barcalow (1997) present a case for the importance of security in applications designed for the corporate environment. They present a collection of 7 patterns which can be applied during system design and implemented late in the development. These patterns are : SINGLE ACCESS POINT which helps solve back door access to sensitive data by limiting application entry to one single entry point. The SECURE ACCESS LAYER pattern enables secure communication between an application and external systems. The CHECK POINT pattern provides for user validations in order to prevent security breaches. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Charles Baxter, author of plethora of books and university teacher, writes a craft book that goes deeper than the surface of writing and deeper than the words written down. In Charles Baxter s The Art of Subtext, he discusses how authors can use the words they do write just as much to express what they don t write. The first chapter, The Art of Staging claims Staging in fiction involves putting characters in specific strategic positions in the scene so that some unvoiced nuance is revealed. (Baxter 13) This includes the character s standing positions, their proximity to each other, specific gestures and facial expressions, which give the reader more insight to the scene and the characters without explicitly saying so. This goes hand in hand with the setting of the atmosphere where atmosphere sets the dominant tone or the mood of a story. The atmosphere can be in reference to the setting or the characters themselves. Here, the reader is to read between the lines. The key to this is using a lot of detail which is crucial to providing the information. This is something important that I need to incorporate in my own writing. • 11. How Does Shakespeare Present Commitment In Romeo And Juliet Examine Shakespeare s presentation of commitment within a love relationship in Romeo and Juliet. William Shakespeare wrote over 400 plays during his life during the Elizabethan era, of which one of his more famous plays is Romeo and Juliet. People from all classes went to watch his plays at the Globe theatre where seating was available to suit the various classes. His plays examined several issues that occurred to Elizabethan society, at a time when loyalty, religion and family were paramount. This essay will be looking at the theme of commitment and how it was portrayed. Shakespeare shows the theme of commitment in the play Romeo and Juliet by demonstrating commitment to one another within a love relationship. This was demonstrated within the lines If thou dost love me, pronounce it faithfully which is followed later in that dialogue with Lady by blessed moon I swear. This shows commitment by swearing at the moon of their love, which is an example of pathetic fallacy due to the fact that this scene occurs at night. This is pathetic fallacy as the relationship is secretive which has connotations of darkness / night. The word moon can have several meanings in this context. The first meaning moon can have is of one where it provides light in the darkness which as previously discussed may be referring to the secrecy of their relationship. A second meaning is that the darkness represents the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets; whilst the moon is representing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. How Does Thomas Hobbes Use Fear In The Leviathan In Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes defines fear as aversion with opinion of hurt from the object (30). This aversion that humans experience plays a fundamental role in Hobbes understanding of humanity and society. More specifically, in the state of nature the fear of death sustains a constant state of war that motivates men to seek peace under a common power called the Leviathan. However, the function of fear in the Leviathan differs from its function in the state of nature, in that men in the Leviathan maintain peace not only out of fear of other men, but also out of fear of the common power. This understanding of fear mirrors Machiavelli s as outlined in The Prince, in which Machiavelli contends that leaders should use fear to secure their subjects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason for this discrepancy is that desire for power and fear of death balance each other out in the Leviathan. More precisely, Hobbes describes men as having a perpetual and restless desire of power after power, that ceaseth only in death and a fear of oppression that disposes them to seek aid by society because there is no other way by which a man can secure his life and liberty (58 59). Hobbes illustrates how in men, the desire for power and the fear of death are in a tug of war contest, and men ultimately find the most benefit within the Leviathan. The Leviathan acquires power because the fear of death authorizes it to, since the Leviathan controls the life and liberty of the people (127). Hobbes elaborates that men who choose their sovereign do it for fear of one another and that they subject themselves to him they are afraid of (127). Essentially, Hobbes postulates that the fear of the state of nature, in which men live in constant war, has a stronger influence upon men than does the fear of the Leviathan. The Leviathan keeps all men in awe, and they subject themselves to even the most tyrannical dictator in exchange for removal from the state of nature. Therefore, fear in the Leviathan compels men to obey their sovereign in order to remain within the realm of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Foxfire Book Summary When people think Appalachia, they think of West Virginia, but the Appalachian Mountains stretch far from West Virginia and the people living in their hills have a shared cultural heritage that is evident no matter what state they are a part of. The above excerpt is taken from The Foxfire Book, the first in a series of books compiling various articles originally published in Foxfire. Foxfire began in 1996 as a class project for high school students at a Georgian private school. Her generosity is not to be missed either. Even though she only has the food she can grow herself or from her neighbors own generosities, she still found some to share with the students for a meal. She also talks about, near the end of the interview, how she would always make corn pones (corn bread) for her father to take with him to when he went to the city and for the neighbors when they would come to visit. Her kindness and generosity doesn t go unreturned by her neighbors though. As her description of the hog s head shows. Her neighbors obviously really like her, enough to give her a hogs head with a surplus of meat, one that most people would save for themselves, much less give away for free and refusing any payment at that. Whereas the Creature sees each of them fulfill distinct roles of Creator and creation, Victor feels the duality of being both created and Creator. Paradise Lost indoctrinated the Creature with its own testimony of the creation story and filled his subconscious with ideas of conflict and betrayal. Victor s exposure is consequence of the Christian dominant culture of Europe in his time. From a psychoanalytical perspective, Victor struggles to identify himself as the god his id suggests or as the man that his super ego insists he is. • 24. Construction Of Roads For Black Cotton Soil INTRODUCTION : Construction of roads in black cotton soil areas has been problematic due to their low bearing capacity and the detrimental effects of volume instability arising from swelling and shrinkage characteristics of such soils during wet and dry seasons. Such problems assume greater acuteness where the water table is high and clayey subsoil stratum is thick. A Perfect example of a case history study can be considered from Gudivada Bantumilli State Highway, which passes through a plain terrain surrounded with paddy fields, and constructed on a black cotton soil embankment of 3mts height. The entire stretch of the road is located in the delta region of Godavari and Krishna rivers, of the south eastern part of India. The pavement on the embankment was in a state of extreme distress. Lateral shift and settlement in embankment were the common soil failure features observed. TWO METHODOLOGIES USING LIME : Method 1 Injection of Lime Slurry Method 2 Placement of Lime Piles Method 1 : To verify the efficacy of the technique, laboratory experiments were conducted at Central Road Research Institute India on a test embankment of 2.5m x 2.0m x 2.5m made from the locally available silty soil having a dry density of 16 kN/m2. Sigmund Freud s Theory Of Development Emily Bradshaw Professor David Iannaccone Introduction to Psychology December 4th, 2014 Abstract In this research paper, I explained what Sigmund Freud s psychosexual theory of development is and why it is important for the developing child to overcome said conflicts. I also talked about the different effects of not overcoming the conflicts Freud had determined that would lead to adult behaviors. Over the years, Sigmund Freud has created many theories involving many different ideas in the psychological world. One theory that stood out to me throughout our journey in introduction to psychology is Freud s developmental theory. Freud s development theory is the influence that sexual growth has on personality development from birth to adult life, with the phases of sexual maturation designated as oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital. (psychosexual development. (n.d.). The American Heritage® Stedman s Medical Dictionary. ) This theory stood out to me the most because I feel that Freud has a very unique idea of how we, as humans, develop and how almost every stage refers to a different growth, yet all involve sexual ideas. Sigmund Freud was said to believe that once a child reached adulthood at eighteen years of age that they were fully grown. Many psychologists have went against this theory however to discover that humans do not stop growing at eighteen. All the stages of psychosexual development have a conflict in which has to be resolved or the child will have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Velázquez s masterpiece is one that draws sharp criticism ranging from those who find this work as a complete piece with its pictorial features prominent in the artwork, to those who find it hard to interpret its content conclusively (Ancell 159 160; Snyder 542+; Steinberg 48; Bongiorni 88). Despite such disparities, Velázquez s masterpiece was able to project a day in the life of the royal family while at the same time achieving his artistic ideal. Isabel s glare is towards the same direction Margarita is facing yet Isabel s face is not affixed to the viewer s point of view but rather facing down. In order to properly implement computer science in education, it should be required in high school education and teach the ubiquitous relationship that computer science has with the social, technological, and futuristic aspects of the world. Computer science is bound to have social impacts because of its ubiquitous nature. The most influential of these impacts is the introduction of computational thinking. Throughout modern day society, many diseases that humans would consider harmful and just simply and outright, fatal, were actually beneficial to our ancestors, centuries ago. Granted, there are definitely many diseases today that are killing millions of people, but these same diseases that exist have done the opposite for our ancestors. Many of these diseases such as diabetes, and hemochromatosis that we consider deadly provide us a follow up question: Why was this disease selected into our gene pool? And this question will date us back to centuries ago when our ancestors had actually benefited from such diseases as a crucial way to survive. Essentially, iron is what allows almost every form of life to metabolize and function. In fact, our bodies body has several mechanisms that prevent access to iron to pathogens and other infectious bacteria thrive on iron that may harm our bodies known as the acute phase response. The author describes this as he states the bloodstream is flooded with illness fighting proteins, and, at the same time, iron is locked away to prevent biological invaders from using it against us (7). So us readers can take away the idea that iron is crucial for our bodies. So how could potentially accumulating too much iron affect our health? That s when hemochromatosis comes along. Our bodies assumes that the person is lacking iron in their system so they continually absorb the iron in the intestine. Not only that, don t forget that bacteria and diseases also rely on iron to grow and accumulate. This can cause cancer cells to grow and spread continuously without stopping if it consumes our iron. We identified the unknown bacteria through different biochemical tests and identified the many metabolic capabilities of the bacteria. Studying and discovering unknown bacteria is very important in the health field as it may lead to new medicines and innovations for current, existing diseases as well as any upcoming diseases. The discovery of unknown bacteria is very useful in the pharmaceutical industry, as most of the products prepared are made based on these unknown organisms. The biochemical tests used to identify the unknown bacteria included: phenol red broth test (glucose, lactose, and sucrose), methyl red and Voges Proskauer test, citrate test, indole test, H2S production test, urea test and motility test. The PR broths are used to differentiate members of Enterobacteriaceae and to distinguish these members from other gram negative rods. The PR broths are useful in determining a bacterium s fermentation abilities. If the bacterium is able to utilize the carbohydrate, then the acid production from fermentation lowers pH, which in turn turns the broth yellow. However, if the bacterium is unable to utilize the carbohydrate, but does utilize the peptone, which produces the by product ammonia, the medium will have a rise in pH turning the broth pink. During the time period, this case revealed the brutal treatment towards African Americans more than any other event. The case began on March 25, 1931, when a group of young white and African American youths were traveling on a train to find a job. A physical encounter broke out between them and the white youths were thrown out of the train. Then they reported the incident to a stationmaster, who stopped the train. The police arrived to gather the nine African Americans and brought them to jail. Nine young African Americans were recognized as the Scottsboro boys . They were accused of rape of two white women on that train. The white jury convicted eight of them, all except one, the youngest at 12 years old, and were sentenced to death. • 38. Migration Problems for Puerto Ricans Puerto Rico is a Spanish speaking region made up of one big island and a few smaller islands in the Caribbean Sea. It belongs to the U.S as an unincorporated territory. It was a place where the country s constitution does not apply by default. Puerto Ricans are considered Americans. If you are automatically born in Puerto Rico, you are automatically a U.S citizen. They use U.S passports to travel internationally. Some people are inclined to view the Puerto Rican experience as a historical repetition of earlier migrations to the United States. However, the migration experience of Puerto Ricans to the United States is more complex, as well as one of a kind. Similarities do exist between the migration of Puerto Ricans and that of other groups, however, no other ethnic group has shared the tribulations of the Puerto Rican population. Their experience is different from that of anyone else. When Puerto Ricans migrated to the United States they did it in two major waves. The first wave of emigration occurred in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The second wave occurred from the 1940s to the present. The workings of Bernando Vega and Jose Cruz deal with the different generations of Puerto Ricans that these two waves brought to the United States. While Vega discusses the early emigration of Puerto Ricans to New York City, Cruz discusses the later emigration of Puerto Ricans to Connecticut. Each author describes a different Puerto Rican experience in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Bourgeoise In The Communist Manifesto The Communist Manifesto first came about as a result of the economic and political chaos. Within the document, it distinguishes the class stratification and the struggles within. Also within the Communist Manifesto, it was clear that the production of development involving the lower class (proletariat) and the middle class (bourgeoise) was its clear focus. The document then discusses the class struggles of both the proletariat and the bourgeoise, and soon shows how one class over powers the other. This would soon develop a new form of freedom for the rest of the society. The basic argument of the Communist Manifesto is the struggles within the classes. The bourgeoise was commonly known as the property owners and the proletariat was commonly known as the workers. The class struggle begins with the bourgeoisies. The bourgeoisies society was created from the ruins of the feudal society, they had the advantage of not only progression of industrial commerce, but they also had the advantage of convenient transportation. Due to the advantage of transportation, the bourgeoisies were very popular within distributions to other countries. This was a problem because due to the mass production and transportation of trade between two regions, this created competition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It gave us an insight on how class consciousness is required to create a well organized production society. When a society has class consciousness, it gives them an advantage of team work. When they are aware of their class, they understand what is happening around them and also see themselves as a group with common interest to work together as a whole, rather than individual. This shows us that if it was productive in history, it would more likely be beneficial to our society today if we were more aware of our class to create an organized ... • 40. The Sabbath In Modern Christianity The Sabbath is nearly forgotten and rarely observed in modern Christianity. Furthermore most don t connect the lack of Sabbath observance to modern issues including the sense of being over worked, over scheduled, and even over stimulated as Christians. Brueggemann explains the Sabbath was created and established by God create for man to resist the constant inward pull toward the prevailing values of the day (Brueggemann, 2016). Yet, the prevailing values and cultures seem to be winning for most Christians. Scazzero explains the Sabbath observes comes from our core, our true sense of spirituality, and isn t a suggestion, but in fact a command of God (Scazzero, 2006). Unfortunately, I like most Christians, have suffered the same fate. Not only as a Christian person, but as I pastor, I have regularly ignored the need for a Sabbath s rest and have suffered for it. As Barton explains, if Sabbath isn t observed, often our illnesses become our Sabbath (Barton, 2015). These words resonate deep within my own soul. • 41. Food And Religion Secondly, there are many variations in the kind of practices associated with food. These practices can be traced down to their religious beliefs or from their cultural heritage. Again, given the diversity of cultural backgrounds of the Indians in Singapore, it is expected that there will be a plethora of practices that people follow. During the field trip to the Burhani mosque, I noticed how there is the practice of eating salt before and after food. Further research reveals that Muslims believe that salt is very beneficial for body health and it can protect you from many diseases if you take it right before and after meals. This is just one example illustrating the influence religion has on eating habits. In Hinduism several rituals are associated with food as well. They believe that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As such, it is a very common sight among the Hindus who traditionally follow the custom of sprinkling water on the food before eating their meal and it is believed to be an act of purification. Cultural belief also affects the way people eat. For instance, among all the Indians, cutlery is not used to eat food. They think that food is meant to be a whole sensory experience, so an eating habit in the traditional Indian culture is to consume Indian foods such as curry, rice and naan bread by picking it up using the hands. Bread is often used to scoop up the curry sauce and rice, and it is dipped into traditional soups such as daal, a lentil based soup. Indian people are supposed to eat with their right hands, because eating with the left hand is thought to be unclean. While it is still common to find Singaporean Indians eating with hands, it is more likely they will do so in the comfort of their own homes or in restaurants where they can wash their hands before and afterward. Many Indians now do not eat with hands and use cutlery instead in public settings such as the food court or school canteens because they may find it inconvenient and unhygienic to eat with hands in these ... A daughter born to a father who has FXS will be affected but the son will not be effected as they do not inherit the fathers X chromosome. If the mother has FXS both genders have 50% of inheriting this syndrome. Management of Fragile X Syndrome can start with an individual assessment and designing medication specifically made to help manage the effects of the syndrome. This medication can manage behavioural and emotional issues commonly seen in FXS like anxiety, ADHD, OCD, and mood instability. • 43. Communication in Virtual Team Katie M Drinkall (u06a1) Unit 6 Assignment 1 Communication in Virtual Team Capella University September 26, 2013 Communication Communication is the activity of conveying information though the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information by speech, visuals, signals, writings or behaviors (Grosse, 2002). These processes are done over time, culture, and geographic boundaries, while this has become a common practice for organizations and has give rise to the concept of globally dispersed teams known as virtual teams (LaLonde, 2011). Communication is one of the most necessary components of leadership, without communication there would be no teams, nobody would know what their role on the team would be, there would be no procedures ... When a virtual team is established there are many reasons why the team was developed, the main reason would be physical locations from one another. When teams are spread out over a long distance it can be very time consuming as well as costly to travel to that current location for a meeting, while the meeting could be conducted via the internet and conference call. Even though a team is only communicating in the virtual reality, there are many aspects of the first initial meeting that need to be made to make the team as effective as possible. According to Nyström amp; Asproth, once initial contact has been made there needs to be standards that need to be set for a positive communication standard. Technology According to Pitts (p.3), Training is a very large issue related to communication in a virtual team, either the team members do not have enough training when it comes to technology or they are simply lacking the equipment needed to communication in a professional manner. While LaLonde (p.8) states that the information technology provides the influence necessary to support the development and expansion of new organizational infrastructure. • 44. Example Of Observational Learning The topic that I chose for this week is observational learning. Observational learning is learning by others and imitating their behavior (Griggs, 2009, p. xx). Observational learning can help us when we want to learn how to play sports, drive a car, or even learn to write letters. There are numerous things we can acquire through observational learning. Many of us watched our mother and grandmother bake, or even just cook when we were younger. We picked up many of the things that they did, this is another example of observational learning. We also learn attitudes and behaviors through observational learning. There are good models of behavior. Models such as how to act appropriately in certain situations. On the other hand, there are bad models. Those little negative traits, and habits we pick up from watching others. Often times we hear people say: He/she did not have proper home training. This comes from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If you have ever made a face at an infant and watched them try to imitate it, this is the observational process at work. The same with a toddler who sees his parents folding laundry. Later the child will grab some clothes and pretend to be folding them. A young boy watches another boy on the playground get in trouble for hitting another child. He learns from observing this interaction that he should not hit others (Cherry, 2016). There are several factors that influence observational learning. They are attention: The person must have their focus directed at the model. Retention: The observer must be able to code, and store patterns so the data can be retrieved. Motor reproduction: Kinesthetic and neuromuscular patterns are practiced with successive iterations until the model s behavior is approximated by the observer ( Albert Bandura Observational Learning, 2016). Lastly reinforcement and incentives: These send the learner in the direction of wanting to pay attention, retain, and recall the action in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Does The Government Influence The Role Of The Church And... While our Founding Fathers did not intend for the government to interfere with Church and family roles, it is clear from America s history that this is exactly what has happened. Over the past few centuries, the government has slowly taken over the roles of the Church and family. The role of the Church is supposed to provide hope to the unreached and unsaved and be a place to grow closer to God. The role of the family is to provide care for one another and connect to each other on a personal level. The government has slowly been taking these roles away and replacing it with their own laws and regulations. Over the years, the United States government has slowly usurped the roles of the Church and family system and removed God from many things, causing Americans to put ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This has changed to the government overtaking the roles of the Church and family. First of all, the government has had a major impact on the Church. People have come to trust the government rather than trusting the Church. There are many reasons for this including: if there are no jobs, people go to the government s welfare; if you need food, you get food stamps instead of relying on the Church; and if you need medical support, you get Medicaid instead of relying on the Church for support. The government has also taken away the right of talking about God in the public school system. Instead of schools allowing free speech, there are certain requirements about what can and cannot be talked about. Since the government operates the public schools, they get to decide what to teach the kids, even if it is not Spiritually related. Furthermore, giving taxes to the Church is hard to do when you have to pay the Government about 30% of your income. The Bible tells us to give 10% of our income to God. Overall, the government has replaced religion with science, and people put their trust in the government rather than the Church. Next, the government has replaced the roles of the ... You are living the American dream. Now imagine that you are again nineteen years old, but living in Uganda. You have little money, few belongings, no peers or mentors, and no education past high school. It was a cycle: The parents could not afford an education. With no education means no job to pay bills. They became homeless. Their children were forced to grow up in depravity, with no schooling either, and thus begins the cycle anew. Katie Majors began to realize that the children who didn t go to school simply couldn t afford the mere USD $20 that it costed. To the undernourished and homeless families on the street, that was a fortune. Majors decided to change that. She started Amazima Ministries, dedicated to providing school funds, hot meals, and the Gospel. Amazima is still growing and prospering today. She began assisting those who were infected with diseases such as AIDS and HIV, as well as helping care for the injured. Agnes, a young girl who fell prey to injury, had been the sole provider of her family at just nine years old. She, and her sisters, Mary and Scovia, were living alone when Majors found them. Their father had died of disease and their mother had fled in fear of being a single parent. It was on a fateful day that their crumbling house collapsed on Agnes. She was rushed to the hospital but was not treated. In Uganda, those who are treated are only those who can pay. She had no money nor an adult to pay, so she simply lay on the bed, waiting for medical care. Majors learned about the girl s situation and rushed to the hospital ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Terrorism Between Iraq And The United States Essay After the gulf wars, a ceasefire was negotiated between the United Nations coalition and Iraq. During the ceasefire, the United Nations became aware that Iraq had started a biological warfare program in the 1980s, as well as a chemical warfare program. Upon further investigation, they found that these programs had not continued after the war. As a result, the United States main focus moving forward was the removal of the Saddam regime, their official foreign policy for years to come focused on this goal. With the suspicions that Saddam Hussein had the abilities to acquire weapons of mass destruction, the Bush administration going as far as to claim he already had them, the United States and other countries began devising a plan of action. These countries strongly believed that Iraq was a treat to its neighbors and the rest of the world, and that the only solution was to invade Iraq. The United States invading Iraq in 2003 was a turning point in the reason why relationship between Iraq and the United States is the way it is today. In August of 2002, the Bush administration s position about Iraq had changed significantly. Prior to this point, the United States and other western countries had been arming Iraq with weapons of every type. The fact the United States and other countries had been arming Iraq with weapons, shows how little they considered Iraq to be a threat. This quickly changed.
