A Narrative Essay About Moving To A College
I grew up in the country of the small town of Forest City, Iowa. I am an only child who has always
been a motivated person to achieve at my highest level. Throughout my life, I have always been told I
am hard worker, and I believe that is from my childhood background of growing up with a single
mother. My mother and I have gone through endless challenges with one another, but that does not
stop either of us from succeeding in life. I have set many high goals for myself, and nothing seems to
be impossible in my mind. When I was ten years old, my dad moved out. We lived in a rundown
country home that had a window air conditioning and was heated by a burning stove. My mom and I
would haul wood through snow from a shed across our yard to our basement just to keep our house
warm. We were low on money and sacrificed opportunities to help save money. About four years later,
my family could finally afford to get a divorce, and my mom and I moved to a house we could
manage better. It was hard for me to grow up without a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I was instantly heart broken and terrified I would lose the person that motivated me to do my best. My
mom had to go through seventeen chemotherapy treatments and three surgeries. Throughout this entire
process, I was terrified, but I tried my best to hide it. I knew that my mom needed a solid support
system and optimism in the atmosphere. My mom getting cancer made it hard for me to focus in
school, sports, and I failed to be a teenager by being with friends and gaining new experiences. About
two years later, I was a senior in high school when my mom was pronounced cancer free. A huge
weight was lifted off my shoulders, and I never felt so grateful in my life. My mom s cancer taught us
both to be optimistic in challenging situations, trust God s plans, and to never take advantage of what
you have because you never know when it can slip

Essay on Legal Rights Afforded to the Accused
Legal Rights Afforded to the Accused
James Parkins
CJ227: Criminal Procedure
November 11, 2013
In this paper we will be discussing the procedural steps that the police are required to take once John
began to incriminate himself along with the procedural steps they are required to take following the
arrest and interview of John at the police station. After covering the procedural steps we will compare
both the preliminary hearing and grand jury proceeding to establish probable cause for the felony
charges. Once we finish covering the two procedural steps we will cover what the judge needs to take
into consideration when setting the bond for John. The final thing that will be covered is what an
arraignment is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once John is booked he will be allowed one phone call and then incarcerated until the arraignment
where he will appear before the judge. When he is before the judge, the judge will decide if there was
probable cause for his arrest and decide whether or not he will be allowed to post bail, and if so, the
amount. Now, we move on to cover and compare the preliminary hearing and the grand jury process to
establish probable cause for the felony charges. A preliminary hearing is used to determine if there is
enough evidence against John to go to trial. A good way to look at the preliminary hearing is to think
of it as a mini trial. It is where the judge will allow hearsay evidence. The judge must make their
decision based on probable cause and if the prosecutors have enough evidence to convince a jury that
John is guilty. During a preliminary hearing both sides can argue why or why not a trial should
happen. Witnesses and evidence can be used and defense can cross examine. A preliminary hearing is
held as soon as possible after the arraignment of the defendant. Some states only require a preliminary
hearing if the suspect is charged with a felony. Some states use a grand jury. A grand jury is where a
group of citizens listen to evidence and determine themselves on whether or not there should be a trial.
The only other person that is there with the grand jury is the prosecutor showing them all

Male Gaze In The Male Gaze
The Male Gaze is a phrase coined by Laura Mulvey, in which she examines how through media, the
portrayal of women has evolved and is seen through the eyes of the male perspective. After the 1960 s
sexual revolution, films started to incorporate women as a more objectified aspect, demonstrated by
the visual representation of how they provocatively use their bodies.
In this essay we will be specifically examining the male gaze in the 1999 s cult classic, Fight Club
from both the protagonist and antagonist view and how we as the audience view ourselves, dissected
from the way the characters view themselves.
Fight Club is based on a book by Chuck Palahniuk, centred around a heavily depressed man (Narrator)
who is suffering from insomnia. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator encounters Marla after she begins attending the self help groups he attends in order to
cope with his insomnia. She attends a self help group for testicular cancer, an obvious giveaway that
she, like him, is there under false pretence. He states that ..her lie reflected my lie, and suddenly I felt
nothing, I couldn t cry and so I couldn t sleep (Fight Club 2006, p. 7)
Similarly to the Mirror Stage , theorised by Lacan, he has identified his own trait in the opposite sex.
Through a process of identification which parallels Lacan s famous mirror stage, he derives pleasure
from identifying with an ideal image[...] (Laura Mulvey and the Male Gaze 2015)
From the Narrator s male gaze, he initially doesn t see her as an object of any desire. Her portrayal
towards the audience is almost corpse like, as seen in the image below.

Monetary Policy Essay
Monetary Policy
Monetary policy has some basic goals: to promote quot;maximum quot; sustainable output and
employment and to promote quot;stable quot; prices. The term quot;monetary policy quot; refers to
the actions undertaken by a central bank, such as the Federal Reserve, to influence the availability and
cost of money and credit to help promote national economic goals. The Federal Reserve Act of 1913
gave the Federal Reserve responsibility for setting monetary policy.
The Fed can not control inflation or influence output and employment directly; instead, it affects them
indirectly, mainly by raising or lowering a short term interest rate called the quot;federal funds quot;
rate. The Federal Reserve has certain tools at its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Using these tools, the Federal Reserve influences the demand for, and supply of, balances that
depository institutions hold at Federal Reserve Banks and in this way alters the federal funds rate. The
federal funds rate is the interest rate at which depository institutions lend balances at the Federal
Reserve to other depository institutions overnight. The point of implementing policy through raising
or lowering interest rates is to affect people s and firms demand for goods and services. Changes in the
federal funds rate trigger a chain of events that affect other short term interest rates, foreign exchange
rates, long term interest rates, the amount of money and credit, and, ultimately, a range of economic
variables. This shows how policy actions affect real interest rates, which in turn affect demand and
ultimately output, employment, and inflation.
Monetary policy can be quickly altered and can affect money supply and investments very fast thus
making speed and flexibility one of its strength. Members of the Feds board are appointed a 14 year
term. This isolates them from lobbying so therefore no political pressure to contend with. The tight
monetary policy helped the economy succeed from 1980 thru to 1990 by bringing down the inflation
rate.
Monetary policy is not all strengths there are weaknesses also associated

Atwood Learning Center Narrative
Atwood Learning Center in Rockford is 334 acres long. Most of their land is filled with habitats for
wild animals. The other part of their land is filled with trails. When I went to Atwood, we went on a

what we were going to do because I was tired and didn t know we were just hiking and weren t going

Meaning, it was covered in sweat. I also had a long sleeve and jacket on which didn t help but I just

The Tea Of Tea Masters
In Japan, much of the art that is popular today has been made popular by the endorsement that tea
masters have given it. Tea masters are highly regarded in Japan and they have a large influence on
what becomes popular and what is remembered. A tea master may say that a piece of art has
significance and their word means a great deal. The Tea Ceremony, also known as chanoyu, has long
been a tradition in the Japanese culture. It is defined as a ritualized, secular practice in which tea is
consumed in a specialized space with a codified procedure. It is an elaborate ceremony that has been
performed since the Edo Period in the seventeenth century. It is related to both the Samurai culture
and Zen Buddhism. Tea schools exist to teach the ways of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

utensils are delicate but deliberate and are performed with great concentration. Once the tools are
purified, the thick tea is prepared in a bowl. The guests will be drinking out of the same bowl. The tea
whisk is used to whisk the thick tea. Once the tea is prepared then the bowl is placed facing the guests.
The first guests picks up the bowl and the linen cloth and takes a sip from the bowl. The guest
expresses their pleasure in the tea and continues to drink until they have taken their designated amount
of tea. They then wipe the bowl where their lips touched and pass it to the next guest. When finished
the utensils are taken to the preparation room marking the end of the tea ceremony. The guests bow
and then leave the tea room.
The Japanese Tea ceremony is a secular ritual known for becoming popular in the Edo Period of
Japan. The Japanese Tea Ceremony is a ritual that takes place in the tea house. The tea house was a
place that was meant for Zen practice. It is an intimate affair held between small groups of people. The
Samurais were one of the first social groups to be associated with the Tea ceremony. The long
isolation of Japan from the rest of the world, so conductive to introspection, has been highly favorable
to the development of Teaism (Okakura). Japan used its isolation in order to

Alchemy And Greek Culture
Alchemy is mainly concerned with discovering different methods of changing ordinary metals into
gold or to find a universal elixir. It is a form of chemistry practiced in the Middle Ages. The journey of
Alchemy takes place in Egypt where the word Khem had been applied in reference to the fertility of
the food plains near the Nile. Egyptian beliefs in the hereafter and mummification procedure probably
gave rise to rudimentary chemical knowledge and a goal of immortality. Later, Greek had conquered
Egypt where the ways of Egyptians intrigued Greek philosophers. Greek views of how matter is
contained of the 4 elements of nature had been merged with Egyptian sacred science. The Greek word
for Egypt resulted in Khemia The Arabs added the word

Emile Durkheim Social Facts Examples
According to Emile Durkheim, a social fact is a manner of acting, thinking and feeling engaged by
individuals because and on condition that other members of the social group are also engaged in the
same thing. He said that social facts exist outside human consciousness because it is external,
objective and inherited. It is not in the mind of the person, it is in the environment. Social facts also
have a coercive power that can have a causal influence. We often realize and be aware of the social
fact if we stay away from them, resist or contradict because we are usually unaware of all the social
facts. Social facts do not necessarily require social institutions or organizations for it to be recognized
as a social fact because there are social facts that are not institutional facts. Social facts cannot be
defined by their universality for it can only be defined in a collective aspect because it is practiced by
the community, creating a collective action, making it social. Lastly, according to him, in a holistic
perspective, social facts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Searle defined brute facts as facts that exist independent of us. They are objects that are independent
of human environment. Example would be mountains, rivers, pebbles, etc. Institutional facts however
are facts that are greatly dependent on human environment or institutions for its existence. Example of
this is the government. We constantly recognize the importance and purpose of the government
because of its function. With out human institutions, the government will just be a system. Even the
thought of it of being a system is highly dependent on us. Aside from the brute and institutional facts,
Searle made another distinction in his article, the regulative and the constitutive rules. Regulative rules
regulate existing activities while constitutive rules constitute a certain thing and are responsible for the

Essay on Investigating the Effect of Alcohol on Heartbeat...
Investigating the Effect of Alcohol on Heartbeat of Daphnia
Daphnia are the organisms that are involved in this experiment to find out what effect alcohol has on
their heartbeat. It is easy to study the effects of alcohol on the heart of Daphnia as the organ can be
easily seen through the transparent body of Daphnia. The number of heartbeats may be counted before
submersion in alcohol and after submersion in alcohol to investigate the effect of alcohol.
Daphnia belong to the Phylum Arthropoda and are Branchiopoda which belong to the class, Crustacea.
Daphnia are invertebrates and also have an exoskeleton, jointed appendages, a dorsal heart and open
blood system.

This can also be related to Daphnia in the same way. Therefore I predict that as the concentration of
alcohol surrounding the Daphnia increases the greater the percentage decrease of heartbeat.
ABSTRACT
The aim of the investigation was to find out the effect of alcohol on the heart rate of Daphnia. My
hypothesis was, as the concentration of alcohol increases the lower the heartbeat of the Daphnia will
fall. To test my prediction I carried out 25 individual experiments which were all carried out using the
same procedure but varying the alcohol concentration of the solution. To investigate how alcohol
concentration affects the heartbeat of Daphnia I recorded the heartbeat of 25 Daphnia for a period of 7
minutes. This included 1 minute before submersion in alcohol, 3 minutes during submersion in
alcohol and 3 minutes after submersion in alcohol. I then found the percentage decrease of the
heartbeat of the Daphnia from the resting heart rate. At the highest concentration of ethanol solution,
1x10 1gcm 3 the greatest percentage decrease of heart rate was 86.5%. The results in general show
that increasing the concentration of alcohol decreases the heartbeat of the Daphnia lower.
METHOD
Before starting the practical part of the investigation the different concentrations of alcohol that

The Gospel Of Judas, Tell Judas
A Gospel is a religious document that describes Jesus life from when he was born, until death and the
resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus, himself, had 12 disciples, whom advised him and later grew to the
name, The 12 Apostles . Those of whom Jesus call his Apostles (Students) were: Simon (Named
Peter), Andrew ( Peters brother), James (Son of Zamebee), John (James brother), Phillip,
Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew (The Tax Collector), James (Son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus, Simon

Throughout all the other gospels, they claim that Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus Christ to the Romans
for a mass sum, of 30 pieces of silver. Now that may not sound like too much now, but back then in
33AD, it was a large amount. Judas was a politician. Who played both Jews and romans to use Jesus

Germany s Tug Of War For Unification
Germany s Tug of War for Unification
In the relatively short one hundred and thirty three years that Germany has been a nation, its borders
have grown, shrunk, and changed hands many times. While currently it is a rather stable nation that
most likely finally has established itself for the foreseeable future, it looks nothing like it did those
133 years ago. Even less than twenty five years ago it was a totally different nation than it is today.
Germany s volatile borders of the past combined with its origins as a bunch of independent states
being brought together under one flag has made it hard for Germany to truly be a unified nation. For
being such a young nation it has been at the center of most of the world s historical highlights, ...

This was the first time Germany was a centralized nation. There was the German Confederation which
came about in 1815, to replace the Holy Roman Empire, or the First Reich. The German
Confederation was comprised of 41 German states; this was not a government, however, more an
agreement not to fight each other, and a promise to defend each other in the case of war. The states
were still ruled by monarchies and there was no sort of currency or government body. In 1848 there
was an attempt to unify the German states into a single nation. It was brought about by a revolution,
which caused elections to be held, and a constitution to be drafted. This movement basically crashed
and burned, however. There was debate because Austria Hungary was part of the confederation but the
National Assembly which was convened felt Austria Hungary was too large and only really wanted the
German speaking half in the nation. They didn t have the power to break up the state so leadership of
the state would have fallen on the Prussian Emperor. He did not like the idea of having to act on behalf
of the will of the people and rejected being emperor. This was basically the final nail in the coffin for
that and the rebellion was then squashed. In 1866 following a war with Austria, the German
confederation was replaced by the North German Confederation which was led by the Prussians and
was cut down to 17 states. When the Second Reich was established, Bismarck remained

“The Science of Shopping” versus The Signs of Shopping -...
WRIT 102
Feb 24, 2013
The Science of Shopping versus The Signs of Shopping Two Sides of an Issue Shopping has become a
daily activity which happens a billion times in America and around the world. We cannot imagine how
our lives would be affected if shopping was suddenly stopped. Malcolm Gladwell and Anne Norton
both write articles about two sides of modern day shopping: how consumers have impacted the retail
industry and how the industry influences consumers. In the article The Science of Shopping, Malcolm
Gladwell, a well known writer and journalist, analyzes the shopping behaviors of customers and how
retailers can lure customers; while Anne Norton, a professor of political science at the University of
Pennsylvania, in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, Gladwell writes What Paco likes are facts (100). The sentence is short but strong and
clear enough to emphasize the idea of the following paragraph. The way Gladwell describes Paco
Underhill and his expression of Paco is objective. Although Gladwell says It isn t a hostile gaze,
because Paco isn t hostile at all, readers do not find any kind of subjective emotion in his article (102).
He keeps his tone throughout the article neutral, neither positive nor negative. This is one of the
strongest points that makes his essay more convincing compared with Norton s essay. Gladwell is
specific when talking about Paco. He gives a brief description of Paco and the way he feels when he
interacts with Paco: Paco Underhill is a tall man in his mid forties, partly bald, with a neatly trimmed
beard and an engaging, almost goofy manner (Gladwell 98). This gives readers a clear image of Paco
Underhill like he actually stands before them. In contrast, Norton shows her negative voice in the
Shopping at the Mall part of the article. Norton writes Those who own and manage the mall restrict
what come within their confines (105). Using many strong verbs, restrict, permit and a clear negative
tone, Norton strongly confirms that Neither freedom of speech nor freedom of assembly is permitted
there (105). Despite

The Challenges Of Interracial Marriage
Interracial marriage takes place between people who are from different racial or ethnic groups. This
year marks the 50th anniversary of Loving v. Virginia, but still they facing few challenges through out
the years. Loving v. Virginia, the U.S. Supreme Court case overturned state laws banning interracial
marriage. Over five decades, interracial relationships have become more common across the United
States, but those couples still face some unique challenges. Interracial marriage is reasonable and
people should stop being judgmental. Interracial couple should not be judged or differentiate than any
normal couple. Everyone is unique in their own way, race or color have nothing to do with the
marriage. If a person really understands you and cares for you, race or culture does not matter. Outer
shell of a person does not change who they are on the inside.
Henriken explains that In U.S. Census Bureau (2000) data, the number of interracial marriages rose to
slightly more than 3,000,000 and comprised approximately 5.5 percent of all marriages (Henriksen jr.,
n.d.). In 1990, the interracial law was passed, and after the year of 2000, 3,000,000 interracial
marriages took place. You can tell from the number that this law was much needed for those who liked
someone from different race or culture. The number of interracial marriage has been increasing and
society have start accepting them. People should remember that a couple is made up of two people,
not two races or cultures.

Descartes s Theory Of Knowledge Essay
Descartes begins his Meditation observing that there have been many occasions in the past when he
had thought he was acquiring important knowledge yet subsequently discovering to have been
mistaken. Therefore he aims to find a method that will render the research absolutely immune from
the very possibility of error. The method of doubt is not only an epistemological method, but
successfully fulfills the purpose of Descartes by helping to achieve important metaphysical results.
One fundamental reason Descartes gives his readers to doubt everyday beliefs about the world, is to
build up a system of reliable knowledge. To do so it is necessary that he gets rid of all the unreliable
beliefs he might have had. He notices that most of us tend to manage life though ad hoc revisionism,
which he finds inadequate. His most powerful reason becomes clear when Descartes presents our
collective beliefs in the image of an imaginative house, which unlike most houses, is entirely ad hoc.
This house is the metaphor for the course of human life: with no blueprint or architectural drawing.
No three years old makes any sort of long term plan. Would we really want our position in the world
to be determined by a three years old? The meditations offer a chance to start over by demolition of
our old dwelling. By illustrating what is weakest in the science (the lack of a guiding principle e.g.
blueprint), Descartes wished to offer the basis for the new science. Scientia (knowledge) extends to

Was the Reichstag Fire the Main Reason Why Hitler Was Able...
In 1934 Hitler moved in to take supreme power of Germany and was able to establish a dictatorship. I
agree that the main reason why Hitler was able to do this was because of the Reichstag Fire in 1933.
There were many other reasons other than this such as the Enabling Act, the banning of political
parties and trade unions and finally the Night of the Long Knives.
The Reichstag fire was the most important why Hitler was able to establish a dictatorship. On the
evening of the 27th of February 1933, the Reichstag building was destroyed by a huge fire caused by a
Dutch communist supporter called van der Lubbe who was caught at the site of the fire with matches

The Reichstag was now just a meeting place for the NSDAP.
The final reason for the establishment of Hitler s dictatorship was the Night of the Long Knives. Some
SA leaders demanded that the Nazi party should carry out its socialist agenda, and that the SA should
take over the army. Hitler couldn t afford to annoy the businessmen or the army. On the 30th of June
1934, Hitler, with the help of the SS, murdered around 400 of the SA members, including its leader
Ernst Röhm, along with a number of Hitler s other political opponents. All this was done in just 4
days! The Night of the Long Knives was important. The first reason it was important was because of
this, Hitler was given loyalty by the army. Because the army was much smaller than the SA, they
feared them a lot. Consequently, many of the Army s leaders asked Hitler to abolish the power of the
SA. If he didn t do this, the army warned him that they will put up a candidate to oppose Hitler. The
army was also the only organisation that had the power to remove Hitler. After he did this, the army
swore an oath of loyalty to Hitler.
So what am I to conclude? Is it still a yes or is it a no. In fact, I think the answer is still yes, because

Clouded Leopard Research Paper
The clouded leopard could possibly be saved. There are 10,000 left as of 2015 they are considered
critically endangered. They are critically endangered because of Hunting,Poaching, Climate changes,
and Human impact are all causes of the population decrease.
Human Impact is one of the causes the clouded leopard is going extinct. The black market sells the
clouded leopards skulls and pelts for 5,700 dollars to vietnam each year. Smuggling is a big part of
human impact because illegal markets smuggle 3,00 each year . Also the clouded leopard is getting
killed by farmers because it eats the farmers livestock which is a decrease to the farmers livestock so
they kill the leopard. Therefore Human Impact is a big problem .
Climate change is another factor of the Clouded leopards extinction.By south asia, the weather has
gotten a lot warmer which is why it s hard for the animal to repopulate. Their natural environment is
being harmed due to Global warming. The clouded leopard is normally in cold weather so they have

Remove The Rotted Wood
If you have noticed that the wood around one of your window frames has become soft to the touch,
the wood around your window is rotting. Unfortunately, once the wood starts rotting, you can t stop
the process. However, you can patch the wood and allow yourself some time to save up to replace the
frame. Remove The Rotted Wood The first thing you are going to need to do is remove the rotted
wood from the window frame. In order to remove the rotted wood, you are going to need a chisel, a
knife and small paintbrush. Take the chisel and use it to slowly chip away at the rotting wood. You
should be able to easily chip away all the soft wood without putting too much pressure on the chisel. If

Personal Speech On Football
In just about every football game from any age group there is always some sort of peptalk. This is
usually given by the coach to fire up the players and get them ready for the game ahead of them. The
pep talk I got that night will be in my mind for the rest of my life. My Coach always gave us life
lessons that were key not only on the field but off of it as well. He would say things such as there is no
I in team and anything is accomplishable if you work hard enough. He was always inspiring me with
his speeches, but one stuck out the most. This speech was at one of our Thursday night meetings; we
would meet every Thursday to eat supper together as a team, hang out with freinds, and most
importantly get ready for the game on Friday. We would always sit in chairs and listen to him; Usually
ranting on about teamwork and stuff like that but he changed it up. The life lesson he was teaching us
was play like it was your last game.
In his story he talked about a bulldog, and how the owner showed no pity on him. The man would not
let the bulldog ride in the carriage with him, the dog always had to keep up with the man. One night
the man was riding in his carriage and decided to camp the night out. So he stopped and set up his
camp and noticed the dog wasn t around. The man said to his kids if the bulldog wants to live he will
catch up . The kids were devastated at this and wanted the dog back, but did not testify their dad s
words. The man woke up in the middle of the night to the sounds of growling and vicious snarling.
That s when he heard his bulldog aggressively barking back at the creature. The man didn t dare go
outside to help his dog because he thought the dog had the willpower and strength to fend for itself. So
he heard a long going battle of barking, growling, biting, and whimpering. At about midnight the
fighting noises stopped in a great whimpering noise. He didn t know if the dog was still alive or not
but he went back to sleep. The next day the man and his family woke up and left the tent to find his
bulldog laying in the grass next to a giant grey wolf. The bulldog fought for its life and won, this is
because the wolf thought he had nothing to lose but the bulldog fought for everything he had. My

Eulogy
When my Grandmother passed away, I thought about it long and hard. I thought about how I could
somehow do something to make her life here on Earth a tribute from the ones whom loved her, and the
ones that she had touched. This eulogy written for Corolie Feagin Davis, was not only written as a
means to be closure of her life here on Earth, but to celebrate her crossing over into a much better
place. That place, which she has spoken to me and others about on several occasions, is where she has
been laying up her treasures. All my life she has told me, and others, that she need not gather up her
treasures here on this Earth, because as she used to say her treasures lie on the other side. Every one of

New Mexican Culture In Bless Me, Ultima
Traditional New Mexican culture is the backbone of Bless Me, Ultima. Although there a lot of
qualities taken from the culture, readers will view the novel from multiple perspectives and separate
the realistic representations of the culture from fiction. Analyzing different elements from the novel
will demonstrate how the relationship between them brings the world of Bless Me, Ultima to life. The
elements of the llano, owl, and whirlwind will specifically examine Ultima and her role as a
curandera. These are just three of the elements, but all of them together are essential to Tony s
understanding of Ultima and his coming of age we see throughout the novel. In the beginning of the
novel, Antonio is with his siblings at night when they first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She teaches Antonio that even the plants [have] a spirit (Chapter 4). The llano is a sacred place for her.
The reader can see the importance of the care and handling of the plants is to Ultima because she has a
specific process of how to handle them. There is much history behind her practice and she takes great
pride in it. The llano is an extension of Ultima because as a curandera, she uses plants as physical
healing as well as spiritual healing. Ultima and Antonio have an unexplainable connection through the
whirlwind. When she places holds Antonio s hand, he feels the four directions of the llano met in
[him], and the white sun shone on his [soul]. This is referencing an Aztec and indigenous perspective
as physical and spiritual markers in finding one s identity. Ultima is the whirlwind helping him to
grow and mature into a young adult. In this scene, the whirlwind is a powerful and positive force, but
in western cultures, winds are almost always seen as destructive and evil. This is a common contrast
readers see throughout the novel with Ultima. Each element, the owl, llano, and whirlwind, are a
projection of everything Ultima symbolizes. She is a guardian who watches over her family and the
town, protecting them from the evils that try to do harm. She is a healer that provides physical and
mental healing. She is a teacher that assists Antonio on his journey to becoming a young

The Ethics of Crowdsourcing
Stephanie Lee
Ethics of Crowdsourcing
Crowdsourcing ; Innovation or Exploitation?
Abstract
Crowdsourcing is the concept of mass collaboration of external outsourced tasks typically from an
institution to its community (Howe, 2005). This paper explores the two sides of crowd sourcing;
whether this net enabled community collaboration is accelerating innovation or exploiting the laborers
with menial tasks of little to no benefit through an analysis of Soylent, one of the latest innovations in
crowd sourcing using John Rawls Theory of Justice, the Veil of Ignorance, I aim to demonstrate how
can we all benefit from crowdsourcing and harness the true power of collective intelligence and mass
collaboration just by maintaining a fine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1714, the British Government was stuck for a solution to what they called The Longitude Problem
which made sailing difficult and deadly (killing 1,000s of seamen every year) (Thomas, 2011).
Inaccurate Longitude charts were causing sailors to be lost at sea, and in some cases people starved.
Seeking innovation, the British Government offered £20,000 for people to invent a solution (£20,000
in 1714 is around $4.7 million dollars in 2010) (Thomas, 2011). Innovative scientists and sailors came
together to formulate information that is more accurate. This is possibly the first ever example of
crowdsourcing; thus, solving the problems for many sailors. The contest was considered unsolvable by
many. John Harrison, the son of a carpenter, won the Longitude contest. Harrison invented the marine
chronometer (i.e. an accurate, vacuum sealed pocket watch) (Thomas, 2011). His knowledge and
brilliance helped solve navigation in the 1700 s. The aristocrats were hesitant to award Harrison the
prize but eventually paid him the £20,000 (Thomas, 2011). This example of crowdsourcing is a great
one because it highlights one of the principles of crowdsourcing innovation and creativity can come
from anywhere (Thomas, 2011). In the early 18th century, being able to navigate accurately was the
difference of returning home or not. Getting lost on a transoceanic voyage did not just mean that a
competing nation could

In Block v. Rutherford, 468 U. S. 576 (1984), it was concluded that banning contact visits would be
beneficial since visitors can conceal prohibited items and they can easily be transferred to the inmates
through close contact and it would be too difficult to tell which inmates have violent tendencies as the
inmate population is constantly changing. A new inmate can pose numerous risks to the staff and
existing detainee population. Therefore, it is important that correctional officers conduct a thorough
search as part of their standard procedure for all new inmates. Incoming inmates need to be searched
in order to detect any concealed contraband that may disrupt the safety and operation of a jail as well
as treating individuals who may have wounds or visual infections.
Decision: The Supreme Court affirmed the judgment of the Court of Appeals of the Third Circuit
holding that strip searches do not violate the Fourth Amendment. They concluded that due to the
likelihood of inmates smuggling illegal/prohibited items, it was reasonable that the facilities
conducted thorough searches in order to maintain the safety and order of the institutions. Comments:

How Does Nathaniel Hawthorne Use Symbols In The Scarlet...
Authors employ symbolism to convey a complex idea and incorporate a deeper understanding of a
novel. Many writers exert symbolism through an object, character, or a circumstance that signifies a
deeper meaning rather than directly pointing out how they feel about their novel. In The Scarlet Letter,
Hawthorne includes symbols to represent his life experiences under Puritan ideals. Hawthorne uses
symbolism in the names of the following characters; Hester Prynne, Roger Chillingworth, Arthur
Dimmesdale, and Pearl which represents different aspects of each characters personality. Hawthorne
selected these names based on biblical references, Puritan era, and evocative names. In The Scarlet
Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne writes a historical and romantic fiction novel riddled with symbolism

The History And How Of Computers
The History and How of Computers Everything you do on a computer or phone is meticulously
programmed. Surfing the web requires HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery, and PHP. Lines upon lines
written such as $temp = password_hash($object password, PASSWORD_BCRYPT); . The binary
zeros and ones of machine code turn into video games, websites, and programs such as what you are

known information and share new knowledge. The unsung founders of the age of information are
programmers that created the links between peers that we now call the World Wide Web. In the past
200 years, a computer has gone from reading punch cards to running simulations on how the universe
was created. In the beginning, there was Jacquard. Joseph Marie Jacquard was an inventor in France
between the 18th and 19th centuries. His most famous work was the Jacquard loom, which read a
punch card in order to weave a chosen design into cloth. In 1822, Charles Babbage had the idea of a
device powered by steam to calculate tables of numbers, although the idea was to be funded by the
English government, it never came to be (The Engines). Decades later, in 1890, Herman Hollerith
revamped the punch card system in order to calculate the census. Hollerith s company became what
we know as IBM who later paved the way for data storage by floppy discs and hard drives ( IBM is

Nobody Knows Sparknotes
Making jokes is the best way for people to create connections. However, a person s sense of humor
makes a huge difference in joking telling because jokes can offend people and has various
consequences. Making jokes about people is common between friends because a man can understand
that his friend only wants to get a couple laughs out of him and that his joke shouldn t be taken to
heart. In the short story Nobody Knows, a man, who clearly has not mastered English, comes up to a
random man asking him to explain a fight to a nearby cop. When the man says, Tell the cop that guys

The kid throws a punch at the man and a ten second fight breaks out. The way everything played out,
the man started the fight because the kid could have interpreted the joke has the man insulting his art

make a joke about his dick for? Plus, talking about dick does lead to fights at times, depending on how
people throw the word dick around. After the ten second round ends, the man finds the stranger to help
him explain the situation to the nearby cop. If I was the cop, the first thing I would tell the man is, Sir,
please learn how to speak and write English properly because you sound like a kid trying to read a
physics textbook. And second of all, why would you hit a kid with a bottle if he tried to punch you?
The man could have easily done serious damage to the kid and risk going to jail over a dick joke. Not
to mention that he s older than the kid and he s the one telling the kid a dick joke. As the cop, all I
would need to say is, You re a grown man and what comes to your mind is telling a dick joke to some

Tommy Douglas Should Be Proud Of Canada
Canada has a history of wars and famous people that its citizens can be proud of. In the past one
hundred years there have been events or people that have really made an impact on history. For
example D Day, on the first day Canada made more progress up the beach than any other country, it
was a massive victory! A person that Canada can be proud of is Frederick Banting. He created insulin
which is a medicine that helps control the effects of diabetes. Tommy Douglas is another Canadian
that Canada can be proud of. He is the lead cause for free health care in Canada and he did so many
other things that shaped Canada into what it is today. These are just some reasons that Canada is a
country that its citizens can be proud of.
Canada has had a lot of famous people that have impacted the world and Canada greatly, one of them
is Tommy Douglas. Tommy Douglas was a big part of Canadian history. For one, he was a big part of
things like government run auto insurance, minimum wage, paid vacations and a forty hour work

introduced Medicare which is still in effect today and Canadians all over can be safe knowing that if

Persuasive Essay On High School Games
It is obvious that this game was out of control before this fight broke out. According to Murphy,
(2013) the two teams combined for a total of 20 penalties. I am not sure how many of these were
personal fouls or unsportsmanlike penalties but based on the postgame fight it seems that the coaches
and referees struggled to maintain control of the game.
The two teams remained separate after the game instead of shaking hands. It is custom in high school
football, and football at all levels, to shake the hand of your opponent. In the video, it is obvious that
the teams were told not to shake hands. Instead, the white team stands on the logo in the middle of the
field. The black team is heading toward the locker room when the fight breaks out.
Finally, the presence of police on the field suggests that tensions were high by the end of the game.
There are often police at high school football games but there were at least six officers on the field.
Maybe high school games have a higher police presence than I am used to in Illinois, but the number
of uniformed officers on the field suggests that this wasn t the first time that a football game between
these two teams escalated beyond normal physical football.
An athletic director would have a lot to sort out after an altercation like this. Besides the two coaches
fighting, there are many situations that need to be addressed in the video. First, a player from the white
team spears a player from the black team. This happens just above the

My Pre-Writing Process Analysis
My usual method for writing an essay made it hard for me to start and actually continue into writing it.
I would first start out and open a word document; Then, I would try and figure out how I was going to
write the entire paper in my head, which made it really difficult sometimes. Starting the essay was
definitely my worst enemy because I didn t know what to start with or how to go about most papers.
My method has changed since this class. I always knew what an outline was but now I have
implemented it into my pre writing. Before, I write I try to make an outline of all of the topics that will

long time to think about the rhymes I was going to use but it was challenging and fun for me. The
easiest essay I wrote in this class was also very enjoyable. It was my essay about the golf tournament I
went to. I included sensory details into it and hoped to bring people s attention to my writing through
it. I enjoyed the essay a lot because it was a true story on a great experience I had in a golf
tournament. The activities that assisted me in preparing for each essay were simply an outline.
Although, I m not sure if randomly typing to start an essay would qualify for an activity, it helped me

1 Riff and Bernardo thinking (in terms of their own gangs) of the fight arranged for later that evening
2 Anita thinking about her nocturnal activities with Bernardo after the fight
3 Tony and Maria more romantic love, idealised, though Tony has to agree with Riff, in exasperation,

odds are the toilet will at present be stopped up.
On the off chance that you are a visitor over going by individuals you know or most exceedingly
awful yet individuals you just met and you have stopped up the toilet, having it flood would be a bad
dream no doubt.
Well, this is one of the most straightforward circumstances to maintain a strategic distance from, you

What you have to know when the toilet gets stopped up is:
1) Do Not Flush It Again Using the Handle!
2) You require a plunger obviously. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To know whether the obstruct is unclogged you will either have enough water in the bowl. It will
leave quickly as if you simply flushed it or you have to fill the toilet with water while holding the
plunger over the gap, you at that point expel the plunger, and the water will quickly leave the bowl,
the key is to have the water sufficiently high to leave the bowl. If you pull the plunger far from the gap
and the water just stays there then set the plunger back in and cover the opening. This time top the
bowl off to the base of the edge and after that evacuate the plunger if the water quickly leaves then
you have unclogged the toilet if not it is as yet stopped up, and you have to continue diving until the
point when it does. All the time is keeping enough water in the bowl to compel it through the obstruct.
Doing the unclogging the way it was recently clarified the toilet would never flood since you are
controlling the measurement of water entering the bowl, utilizing the handle you can t control the
water entering the bowl.
Endeavoring to flush and hold the flapper down is too unsafe as is stopping the water, you can cause a
hole by simply turning the water valve, you can break or curve the flush valve parts attempting to hold
the flapper close and causing to a higher degree an issue.
Following the above advances is the least demanding and the most secure approach to never flood a

Internal Comments:
No. While the idea that we choose to see the world either optimistically and pessimistically is

to continue living. I think more specificity in your images, would eliminate both some of the moments
where the poem borders on cliche as well as the moments that distance the reader from the snapshots.
Personal details with make the poem stronger, and feel like the reader is in your snapshot scenes.
The second note for revision I have for this poem is to think about the form. Right now the form isn t
particularly helping you, and in some places with the uneven spacing and unnecessary stanza breaks, it
actively hurts your poem. I would consider fewer stanzas personally. I wonder even about having a
very regimented line, stanza, or even a syllabic pattern, except for those lines speaking about
kaleidoscope eyes. Thank you so much for submitting to Polyphony H.S.; continue

International Trade As A Tool For International Business
The case study in chapter fourteen asks some very important questions regarding international trade as
SME and MNE evolve globally due to technology. Therefore as international business continues to
evolve companies are find easier ways to find importers and exporters from the comfort of their
offices without the costly methods of travel and due diligences trying to find reputable companies to
handle their needs. Using a variety of sources I will analyze international trade through the use of
websites and go into detail about the secureness and effectiveness of those sites.
The advancement of technology has created a network that has speed up globalization due to

Therefore companies are able to benefit through e commerce by overcoming capital and infrastructure
limitations (Daniels, Radebaugh, Sullivan, 2015). Furthermore, there are additional benefits of using
Websites like alibaba .com such as being an improved mechanism for trade by making information
readily available and inexpensive. Therefore by creating a direct service to international traders, gives
companies the opportunities to grow in addition to an even playing field among competitors. Although
there are a good deal of benefits associated with international trade using the internet there are still
some things to watch for in which companies looking to use websites like alibaba.com for their trade
needs should look for. For example, Alibaba s reputation among US consumers has been poor,
including an F rating from the Better Business Bureau. The low rating is due to Alibaba s failure to
respond to 79 complaints against its businesses, including Alibaba.com and AliExpress, BBB s ratings
report said (Whitehouse, 2014). Over the last three years the BBB has received 240 complaints about
Alibaba with about half with problems pertaining to product and service (BBB, 2016). Furthermore, as

Through the IR spectrum we can identify it as an isoborneol because it s basically a hydrocarbon with
a carbonyl. The C H stretching around 3000 wavenumbers, there isn t much else you can identify.
Camphor is fairly simple, so there is no anything other than the carbonyl and some C H stretching.
The spectrum of isoborneol should show an OH peak, though because it s a solid sample, the peak
won t be as broad as those seen for OH peaks in liquid samples. My guess is that the peak at ~3600
wavenumbers is the OH group. However, in my result, the wave doesn t seem to be clearly showed. It
probably means that my isoborneol sample has retained some amount of the precursor, either because
the reaction didn t go to completion or because my purification procedure was inadequate.
Borneol and isoborneol contain an asymmetric carbon atom (denoted by an asterisk), and therefore
each of them exists in two optically active forms and one inactive racemic form ( , +, and ±). Borneol
has an endo configuration; in other hand, its isomer, isoborneol, has an exo

I Want To Run Out Analysis
Small, sleepy towns are like bad movies. Your mom drags you to one to bond on her day off. Just
when you feel settled in with popcorn and soda, the lights dim, the opening credits roll, and you can
tell you re in for an unbearable hour and a half just by the somnolent music that begins to play over
the tinny speakers. The opening scene drags on for several agonizing minutes as the camera pans over
barren landscapes, townscapes, bayous, or tundras. You want to run out the theater door to the car, but
you d hurt your mom s feelings. You re too poor to buy a ticket to another movie. Security is tight. The

Nursing Case Study Nursing
Introduction Nurses are responsible for a significant portion of clinical decisions made within the
hospital setting and their ability to clinically reason and make educated choices is vital to patient
safety and outcomes (Gillies, 2013). This essay will present a case study of a clinical decision made
by a third year nursing student working in the Emergency Department (ED) of a Gold Coast Hospital,
using the first seven steps of the Levett Jones et al., (2010) clinical reasoning cycle. Factors
influencing her methods will be taken into account, and the essay will draw from current literature to
rationalise and support claims. Background to the Case Study Mr Jones is a 42 year old male who was
bought to the ED of public hospital on the Gold Coast by the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS).
Mr Jones was experiencing 10/10 pain in his left hip after his motorcycle fell on top of him. QAS gave
him 10mg of morphine intravenous (IV) at 13:50 before arriving to the ED. When Mr Jones arrived to
the hospital at 14:20 his pain was 9/10, blood pressure (BP) 135/70, heart rate (HR) 75bpm,
temperature 36.6, breathing 16 respirations per minute (RPM) and his oxygen (02) saturation was 98%

Bubonic Plague Research Paper
Bubonic plague is an infectious disease that is spread by the bacteria Yersinia pestis. These bacteria
remain in a dormant state primarily in a rat flea s foregut. Once the flea has bitten a victim it
regurgitates the contents in its foregut into the bite location. Once the bacterium has entered into a
mammal s warm body it begins to reproduce and spread throughout the mammal s body. The
reproduction of this bacterium creates large painful swollen lymph nodes which are called buboes.
Once these buboes get large enough they begin to ooze infected body fluid so that any contact
between an infected person and a healthy person will facilitate the spread of this disease. (The Mayo
Clinic Staff, 2012)

(The Mayo Clinic Staff, 2012)
It was believed in the middle ages that this disease was caused by poor hygiene, bad eating habits,
corrupted humid air, and a lack of rest. Once a person was thought to be infected the doctors would
move them to a non infected area thinking that this would heal the persons illness instead this
transported the disease even further than normal. In modern times we have made leaps and bounds to
control this illness. One of the main problems of the plague is that it is not treatable until the victim
gets tested and confirmed that the plague is the illness. Once that is done they will start receiving high
doxycycline doses and many other types of antibiotics. The mortality rate for someone that is not
treated is 50 90% compared to treated cases of 1 15%.
The bubonic plague has been around for almost two thousand years. In most early cases the plague
was spread from China along the Silk Road. The Silk Road was the over land trade route from the
orient that silk, spices, and other trade able goods from the east to western Europe. In most cases rats
carrying the Oriental Rat Flea or another animal carrying the flea would move to a new location. Once
that animal died the flea would move to another host which could be a human. Once bitten by the flea
a bubo begins to form when the bubo begins to ooze fluid the illness can then be passed through
touch. As stated above in the Middle

My Life Soundtrack
Have you ever rode in a car subsequently after some tremendous event just occurred in your life then a
song begins to sing perfectly with what is going on in your situation? I feel like this has happened
often to many people. Being almost eighteen years old, throughout my life there have had plenty of
experiences that match perfectly with songs. I like to compare it to a soundtrack of my life. As an
example, a soundtrack that I relate to my life is ¨One thousand miles¨ by Vanessa Carlton. The specific
verse that relates my life to this song is ¨You know I d walk a thousand miles just to see you tonight.
The reason I relate to my life to this is because before I turned sixteen years old I would walk miles to

form connections with people and allow us to view each other in a better light. In America, I believe
pro social behavior and altruism is important because everyone in the society are so different, and it
creates a point of similarity as well as charitability.

Interviewing Pastor Hester and volunteering with Spiritual Minds provided me with a different lens as
I look at the importance of advocacy, education, and prevention. First, after talking with members and

issues. Spiritual Minds is making concerted efforts to make a difference, and I believe organizations

Billie Holiday Essay examples
Billie Holiday
Billie Holiday was born Eleanora Fagan on April 7, 1915 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but spent
most of her poverty stricken childhood in Baltimore. Lady Day, as she was named by
Lester Young, had to overcome many tragedies in her lifetime and yet still became one of the most
popular jazz blues vocalists of all time. Billie s Parents, Sally Fagan and Clarence Holiday, were both
born in Baltimore. They married as teens and soon Sally gave birth to Eleanora Fagan. Shortly after
the birth, Clarence
Holiday deserted his family to tour with Fletcher Henderson s band. Billie saw little of her immediate
family and she essentially grew up alone, feeling unloved and gaining a lifelong inferiority complex
that led ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But even with the new marriage the marital and drug abuse continued. She was given a chance to be in
a movie with one of her early idols, Louis Armstrong in 1946. On top of the being disgusted at the fact
that she was stuck playing a maid, she was again feeling the effects of racism, but still she could not
pass up the chance to work with a great like Armstrong. Billie Holiday s story from 1950 on is a
gradual down slide. She was arrested several times on drug charges and was divorced then remarried
for a third time. In 1951 she met and married Louis McKay, who similar to her other two husbands,
turned out to be abusive as well.
Although her recordings, which started up again in 1952, placed her once again with all star jazz
musicians, her voice was slipping fast. Her unhappy relationships distracted her, the heroin use and
excessive drinking continued and by 1956 she was way past her prime. Holiday s 1958 album Lady in
Satin found the 43 year old singer sounding old and worn out and the following year she collapsed. On
the summer day of July 17,1957 Billie Holiday s problems finally caught up with her. She died at the
early age of 44. Holiday rarely sang traditional blues, but her reputation rests on her ability to
transform popular songs into emotionally profound pieces. The recordings that I decided to listen to
were on a cassette titled Billie s

George Santayana And Transcendentalism
George Santayana was an influential 20th century American thinker. He was born is Spain in 1836 and
arrived with his family to the United States when a child. Santayana spent a substantial amount of his
time working at Harvard teaching in the department of philosophy. Santayana is often portrayed as a
realist, a materialist, and a naturalist. These entitlements accompany Santayana well with is his mature
philosophy. He was skeptical about religious matters and believed that the pervasiveness of religious
beliefs and faiths are of value of understanding but not accepting or practicing. Being a naturalist or
atheist, like Santayana, makes it is difficult to see eye to eye with the theory of Transcendentalism and
Calvinism. To begin to defend ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Either we share Emerson s intuition or we do not. Either we see the beauty of the whole or we do not.
And if we do share Emerson s spirituality, we also share his category of mistakes, the confusion of the
logical relationship between good and evil with the possibility that good deeds or characters may
emerge in response to evil experiences. Later, Santayana concludes that Emerson is optimistic in
regards to his nature, his form of life, or his character rather than his thought. Although Emerson
thinks he is making a critical point, actually it is his gratuitous affection for any and all things natural,
in other words, his way of living rather than a theory or ways of thinking. Emerson s optimism is
something that has to be shown or exemplified biographically, not vindicated metaphysically or
epistemologically. In conclusion, Santayana believes Transcendentalists think nature is a product of
the mind, and without the mind nature would not exist. Both Calvinism and Transcendentalism were
beginnings to a presented belief. In order to categorize one as such, Santayana describes the mind to
be distressed, and have other radical subjective criticism of knowledge. When these two ideas
disappeared, systems ceased to be sensibly understood. They became only sacred mysteries. Therefore
making the transcendental system seem especially

  • 2. A Narrative Essay About Moving To A College I grew up in the country of the small town of Forest City, Iowa. I am an only child who has always been a motivated person to achieve at my highest level. Throughout my life, I have always been told I am hard worker, and I believe that is from my childhood background of growing up with a single mother. My mother and I have gone through endless challenges with one another, but that does not stop either of us from succeeding in life. I have set many high goals for myself, and nothing seems to be impossible in my mind. When I was ten years old, my dad moved out. We lived in a rundown country home that had a window air conditioning and was heated by a burning stove. My mom and I would haul wood through snow from a shed across our yard to our basement just to keep our house warm. We were low on money and sacrificed opportunities to help save money. About four years later, my family could finally afford to get a divorce, and my mom and I moved to a house we could manage better. It was hard for me to grow up without a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I was instantly heart broken and terrified I would lose the person that motivated me to do my best. My mom had to go through seventeen chemotherapy treatments and three surgeries. Throughout this entire process, I was terrified, but I tried my best to hide it. I knew that my mom needed a solid support system and optimism in the atmosphere. My mom getting cancer made it hard for me to focus in school, sports, and I failed to be a teenager by being with friends and gaining new experiences. About two years later, I was a senior in high school when my mom was pronounced cancer free. A huge weight was lifted off my shoulders, and I never felt so grateful in my life. My mom s cancer taught us both to be optimistic in challenging situations, trust God s plans, and to never take advantage of what you have because you never know when it can slip ... • 3. Essay on Legal Rights Afforded to the Accused Legal Rights Afforded to the Accused James Parkins CJ227: Criminal Procedure November 11, 2013 In this paper we will be discussing the procedural steps that the police are required to take once John began to incriminate himself along with the procedural steps they are required to take following the arrest and interview of John at the police station. After covering the procedural steps we will compare both the preliminary hearing and grand jury proceeding to establish probable cause for the felony charges. Once we finish covering the two procedural steps we will cover what the judge needs to take into consideration when setting the bond for John. The final thing that will be covered is what an arraignment is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once John is booked he will be allowed one phone call and then incarcerated until the arraignment where he will appear before the judge. When he is before the judge, the judge will decide if there was probable cause for his arrest and decide whether or not he will be allowed to post bail, and if so, the amount. Now, we move on to cover and compare the preliminary hearing and the grand jury process to establish probable cause for the felony charges. A preliminary hearing is used to determine if there is enough evidence against John to go to trial. A good way to look at the preliminary hearing is to think of it as a mini trial. It is where the judge will allow hearsay evidence. The judge must make their decision based on probable cause and if the prosecutors have enough evidence to convince a jury that John is guilty. During a preliminary hearing both sides can argue why or why not a trial should happen. Witnesses and evidence can be used and defense can cross examine. A preliminary hearing is held as soon as possible after the arraignment of the defendant. Some states only require a preliminary hearing if the suspect is charged with a felony. Some states use a grand jury. A grand jury is where a group of citizens listen to evidence and determine themselves on whether or not there should be a trial. The only other person that is there with the grand jury is the prosecutor showing them all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Male Gaze In The Male Gaze The Male Gaze is a phrase coined by Laura Mulvey, in which she examines how through media, the portrayal of women has evolved and is seen through the eyes of the male perspective. After the 1960 s sexual revolution, films started to incorporate women as a more objectified aspect, demonstrated by the visual representation of how they provocatively use their bodies. In this essay we will be specifically examining the male gaze in the 1999 s cult classic, Fight Club from both the protagonist and antagonist view and how we as the audience view ourselves, dissected from the way the characters view themselves. Fight Club is based on a book by Chuck Palahniuk, centred around a heavily depressed man (Narrator) who is suffering from insomnia. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. Monetary Policy Essay Monetary Policy Monetary policy has some basic goals: to promote quot;maximum quot; sustainable output and employment and to promote quot;stable quot; prices. The term quot;monetary policy quot; refers to the actions undertaken by a central bank, such as the Federal Reserve, to influence the availability and cost of money and credit to help promote national economic goals. The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 gave the Federal Reserve responsibility for setting monetary policy. The Fed can not control inflation or influence output and employment directly; instead, it affects them indirectly, mainly by raising or lowering a short term interest rate called the quot;federal funds quot; rate. The Federal Reserve has certain tools at its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Using these tools, the Federal Reserve influences the demand for, and supply of, balances that depository institutions hold at Federal Reserve Banks and in this way alters the federal funds rate. The federal funds rate is the interest rate at which depository institutions lend balances at the Federal Reserve to other depository institutions overnight. The point of implementing policy through raising or lowering interest rates is to affect people s and firms demand for goods and services. Changes in the federal funds rate trigger a chain of events that affect other short term interest rates, foreign exchange rates, long term interest rates, the amount of money and credit, and, ultimately, a range of economic variables. This shows how policy actions affect real interest rates, which in turn affect demand and ultimately output, employment, and inflation. Monetary policy can be quickly altered and can affect money supply and investments very fast thus making speed and flexibility one of its strength. Members of the Feds board are appointed a 14 year term. This isolates them from lobbying so therefore no political pressure to contend with. The tight monetary policy helped the economy succeed from 1980 thru to 1990 by bringing down the inflation rate. Monetary policy is not all strengths there are weaknesses also associated ... Emile Durkheim Social Facts Examples According to Emile Durkheim, a social fact is a manner of acting, thinking and feeling engaged by individuals because and on condition that other members of the social group are also engaged in the same thing. He said that social facts exist outside human consciousness because it is external, objective and inherited. It is not in the mind of the person, it is in the environment. Social facts also have a coercive power that can have a causal influence. We often realize and be aware of the social fact if we stay away from them, resist or contradict because we are usually unaware of all the social facts. Social facts do not necessarily require social institutions or organizations for it to be recognized as a social fact because there are social facts that are not institutional facts. Social facts cannot be defined by their universality for it can only be defined in a collective aspect because it is practiced by the community, creating a collective action, making it social. Even the thought of it of being a system is highly dependent on us. The number of heartbeats may be counted before submersion in alcohol and after submersion in alcohol to investigate the effect of alcohol. ABSTRACT The aim of the investigation was to find out the effect of alcohol on the heart rate of Daphnia. My hypothesis was, as the concentration of alcohol increases the lower the heartbeat of the Daphnia will fall. To test my prediction I carried out 25 individual experiments which were all carried out using the same procedure but varying the alcohol concentration of the solution. To investigate how alcohol concentration affects the heartbeat of Daphnia I recorded the heartbeat of 25 Daphnia for a period of 7 minutes. This included 1 minute before submersion in alcohol, 3 minutes during submersion in alcohol and 3 minutes after submersion in alcohol. I then found the percentage decrease of the heartbeat of the Daphnia from the resting heart rate. At the highest concentration of ethanol solution, 1x10 1gcm 3 the greatest percentage decrease of heart rate was 86.5%. The results in general show that increasing the concentration of alcohol decreases the heartbeat of the Daphnia lower. METHOD Before starting the practical part of the investigation the different concentrations of alcohol that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Germany s Tug Of War For Unification Germany s Tug of War for Unification In the relatively short one hundred and thirty three years that Germany has been a nation, its borders have grown, shrunk, and changed hands many times. While currently it is a rather stable nation that most likely finally has established itself for the foreseeable future, it looks nothing like it did those 133 years ago. Even less than twenty five years ago it was a totally different nation than it is today. This was the first time Germany was a centralized nation. There was the German Confederation which came about in 1815, to replace the Holy Roman Empire, or the First Reich. The German Confederation was comprised of 41 German states; this was not a government, however, more an agreement not to fight each other, and a promise to defend each other in the case of war. The states were still ruled by monarchies and there was no sort of currency or government body. In 1848 there was an attempt to unify the German states into a single nation. It was brought about by a revolution, which caused elections to be held, and a constitution to be drafted. This movement basically crashed and burned, however. There was debate because Austria Hungary was part of the confederation but the National Assembly which was convened felt Austria Hungary was too large and only really wanted the German speaking half in the nation. They didn t have the power to break up the state so leadership of the state would have fallen on the Prussian Emperor. He did not like the idea of having to act on behalf of the will of the people and rejected being emperor. This was basically the final nail in the coffin for that and the rebellion was then squashed. In 1866 following a war with Austria, the German confederation was replaced by the North German Confederation which was led by the Prussians and was cut down to 17 states. WRIT 102 Feb 24, 2013 The Science of Shopping versus The Signs of Shopping Two Sides of an Issue Shopping has become a daily activity which happens a billion times in America and around the world. We cannot imagine how our lives would be affected if shopping was suddenly stopped. Malcolm Gladwell and Anne Norton both write articles about two sides of modern day shopping: how consumers have impacted the retail industry and how the industry influences consumers. In the article The Science of Shopping, Malcolm Gladwell, a well known writer and journalist, analyzes the shopping behaviors of customers and how retailers can lure customers; while Anne Norton, a professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania, in ... The sentence is short but strong and clear enough to emphasize the idea of the following paragraph. The way Gladwell describes Paco Underhill and his expression of Paco is objective. Although Gladwell says It isn t a hostile gaze, because Paco isn t hostile at all, readers do not find any kind of subjective emotion in his article (102). He keeps his tone throughout the article neutral, neither positive nor negative. This is one of the strongest points that makes his essay more convincing compared with Norton s essay. Gladwell is specific when talking about Paco. He gives a brief description of Paco and the way he feels when he interacts with Paco: Paco Underhill is a tall man in his mid forties, partly bald, with a neatly trimmed beard and an engaging, almost goofy manner (Gladwell 98). This gives readers a clear image of Paco Underhill like he actually stands before them. In contrast, Norton shows her negative voice in the Shopping at the Mall part of the article. Norton writes Those who own and manage the mall restrict what come within their confines (105). Using many strong verbs, restrict, permit and a clear negative tone, Norton strongly confirms that Neither freedom of speech nor freedom of assembly is permitted there (105). Despite ... Virginia, but still they facing few challenges through out the years. Loving v. Virginia, the U.S. Supreme Court case overturned state laws banning interracial marriage. Over five decades, interracial relationships have become more common across the United States, but those couples still face some unique challenges. Interracial marriage is reasonable and people should stop being judgmental. Interracial couple should not be judged or differentiate than any normal couple. Everyone is unique in their own way, race or color have nothing to do with the marriage. If a person really understands you and cares for you, race or culture does not matter. Outer shell of a person does not change who they are on the inside. Henriken explains that In U.S. Census Bureau (2000) data, the number of interracial marriages rose to slightly more than 3,000,000 and comprised approximately 5.5 percent of all marriages (Henriksen jr., n.d.). In 1990, the interracial law was passed, and after the year of 2000, 3,000,000 interracial marriages took place. You can tell from the number that this law was much needed for those who liked someone from different race or culture. The number of interracial marriage has been increasing and society have start accepting them. People should remember that a couple is made up of two people, not two races or cultures. ... • 15. Descartes s Theory Of Knowledge Essay Descartes begins his Meditation observing that there have been many occasions in the past when he had thought he was acquiring important knowledge yet subsequently discovering to have been mistaken. Therefore he aims to find a method that will render the research absolutely immune from the very possibility of error. The method of doubt is not only an epistemological method, but successfully fulfills the purpose of Descartes by helping to achieve important metaphysical results. One fundamental reason Descartes gives his readers to doubt everyday beliefs about the world, is to build up a system of reliable knowledge. To do so it is necessary that he gets rid of all the unreliable beliefs he might have had. He notices that most of us tend to manage life though ad hoc revisionism, which he finds inadequate. His most powerful reason becomes clear when Descartes presents our collective beliefs in the image of an imaginative house, which unlike most houses, is entirely ad hoc. This house is the metaphor for the course of human life: with no blueprint or architectural drawing. No three years old makes any sort of long term plan. Would we really want our position in the world to be determined by a three years old? The meditations offer a chance to start over by demolition of our old dwelling. By illustrating what is weakest in the science (the lack of a guiding principle e.g. blueprint), Descartes wished to offer the basis for the new science. Scientia (knowledge) extends to ... I agree that the main reason why Hitler was able to do this was because of the Reichstag Fire in 1933. There were many other reasons other than this such as the Enabling Act, the banning of political parties and trade unions and finally the Night of the Long Knives. The Reichstag fire was the most important why Hitler was able to establish a dictatorship. On the evening of the 27th of February 1933, the Reichstag building was destroyed by a huge fire caused by a Dutch communist supporter called van der Lubbe who was caught at the site of the fire with matches and firelighters. The final reason for the establishment of Hitler s dictatorship was the Night of the Long Knives. Some SA leaders demanded that the Nazi party should carry out its socialist agenda, and that the SA should take over the army. Hitler couldn t afford to annoy the businessmen or the army. On the 30th of June 1934, Hitler, with the help of the SS, murdered around 400 of the SA members, including its leader Ernst Röhm, along with a number of Hitler s other political opponents. All this was done in just 4 days! The Night of the Long Knives was important. The first reason it was important was because of this, Hitler was given loyalty by the army. Because the army was much smaller than the SA, they feared them a lot. Consequently, many of the Army s leaders asked Hitler to abolish the power of the SA. If he didn t do this, the army warned him that they will put up a candidate to oppose Hitler. The army was also the only organisation that had the power to remove Hitler. This is usually given by the coach to fire up the players and get them ready for the game ahead of them. The pep talk I got that night will be in my mind for the rest of my life. My Coach always gave us life lessons that were key not only on the field but off of it as well. He would say things such as there is no I in team and anything is accomplishable if you work hard enough. He was always inspiring me with his speeches, but one stuck out the most. This speech was at one of our Thursday night meetings; we would meet every Thursday to eat supper together as a team, hang out with freinds, and most importantly get ready for the game on Friday. We would always sit in chairs and listen to him; Usually ranting on about teamwork and stuff like that but he changed it up. The life lesson he was teaching us was play like it was your last game. In his story he talked about a bulldog, and how the owner showed no pity on him. The man would not let the bulldog ride in the carriage with him, the dog always had to keep up with the man. One night the man was riding in his carriage and decided to camp the night out. So he stopped and set up his camp and noticed the dog wasn t around. The man said to his kids if the bulldog wants to live he will catch up . The kids were devastated at this and wanted the dog back, but did not testify their dad s words. The man woke up in the middle of the night to the sounds of growling and vicious snarling. That s when he heard his bulldog aggressively barking back at the creature. The man didn t dare go outside to help his dog because he thought the dog had the willpower and strength to fend for itself. So he heard a long going battle of barking, growling, biting, and whimpering. At about midnight the fighting noises stopped in a great whimpering noise. He didn t know if the dog was still alive or not but he went back to sleep. It is thought that the Parvocellular pathway is our primary source for recognition and identification, but there are speculations that its allocentric frame of reference can also be used in a more egocentric approach (i.e., the Parvocellular pathway is able to elicit an autonomic response like the Magnocellular pathway). This research expands on these theories by studying the role of color vision in autonomic attention responses. The experiment attempts to study the relationship between the Magnocellular pathway and Parvocellular pathway through color cues and its effects in capturing attention and control visual behavior (e.g., moving the eyes to locate the ... Starting the essay was definitely my worst enemy because I didn t know what to start with or how to go about most papers. My method has changed since this class. I always knew what an outline was but now I have implemented it into my pre writing. Before, I write I try to make an outline of all of the topics that will go into the essay. It was my essay about the golf tournament I went to. I included sensory details into it and hoped to bring people s attention to my writing through it. It will leave quickly as if you simply flushed it or you have to fill the toilet with water while holding the plunger over the gap, you at that point expel the plunger, and the water will quickly leave the bowl, the key is to have the water sufficiently high to leave the bowl. If you pull the plunger far from the gap and the water just stays there then set the plunger back in and cover the opening. This time top the bowl off to the base of the edge and after that evacuate the plunger if the water quickly leaves then you have unclogged the toilet if not it is as yet stopped up, and you have to continue diving until the point when it does. Later, Santayana concludes that Emerson is optimistic in regards to his nature, his form of life, or his character rather than his thought. Although Emerson thinks he is making a critical point, actually it is his gratuitous affection for any and all things natural, in other words, his way of living rather than a theory or ways of thinking. Emerson s optimism is something that has to be shown or exemplified biographically, not vindicated metaphysically or epistemologically.
