Heat Lab Report Discussion
Conductivity is the ability to pass on electrical current within a solution, a metal or even a gas. It can
be affected by other chemical related factors such as the concentration, temperature and also the
mobility and valence of ions. Yet the most conductive form occurs within aqueous solutions as it
contains both cations and anions; where the solvent stabilises the attracting ions through a process
called solvation. Within the various levels of ionic strength from low to high electricity flow,
electrolytes can either be strong or weak, according to the reaction. Strong electrolytes are substances
that are fully ionised in solution due to the positive and negative ions that migrate under the influence
of an electric field. Therefore the concentration ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although weak electrolytes can conduct electricity, it is unable to perform as well as strong

part A of the experiment, the usage of the conductivity sensor was to measure and determine the
current within the various brands of sports drink in order to record the different electrolyte levels.
Additionally in part B, the technique of a pipette allowed the transport of an extra 10 additions of 1mL
aliquots of the selected sport drink whilst the magnetic mixer consistently stirred the solution. The
focus of this experiment, is to identify the conductivity of various brands consisting of isotonic,
hypertonic and hypotonic sports drinks. Based on logic, it is predicted that Maximus will consist of
the highest level of conductivity, followed by Powerade and then Gatorade due to the fact that there is
an excessive level of electrolytes due to salt ions. In terms of association to the experiment, the
independent variable is adjusted by the variety of sport drinks, directly influencing the dependent
variable. Whilst the dependant variable aims to measure the conductivity of each

Critically Discuss the Factors Which Contribute to...
Critically discuss the factors which contribute to building cohesive groups/teams.
The purpose of the essay is to discuss what factors can contribute to building cohesive groups. There
are many factors which can be useful in developing perfectionism within a group. These factors are as
follow: membership and work environment factors, organisational factors and group development and
maturity. Meredith Belbin s nine team roles also determine the degree to which cohesiveness is
maintained. In order to discuss these factors, this essay will define what a group team is and present
two different kinds of groups. Second, some of these factors contributing to success of group work
will be described. Next, this essay will also focus on the role of ... Show more content on

A team can be successful if the members know each other for a reasonable time. Moreover, they can
build trust within such a group and as a result it can help them in building confidence to perform tasks
better (Mullins, 2010). Thus the time, individuals skills, and the size of the group are significant
aspects in building successful teams.
Work environment is another factor which can help build and maintain perfectionism among team
members. Nature of the task can contribute to the task and the degree of task difficulty should be
moderated because too difficult tasks can cause conflicts, too easy one however boredom.
Communication is also very important and tasks should be communicated clearly which can lead to
cohesiveness. Technology is another aspect worth considering as the resources available in the
workplace can contribute to developing successful teams (Mullins, 2010). Therefore, the manager
should organise work according to the sources they have.
Organisational factor can also play an important part in maintaining successful teams. Successful team
work depends on management and leadership styles. Encouragement and understanding of individual
s problems should be maintained. Human Resource policies and procedures should also be applied
fairly and there should not be any act of discrimination towards people. Success is another key
element bringing success in a team (Mullins, 2010). Thus a manager should take an active part in

care economics along with the evolution and timeline of health care funding. Gaining insight from
economical terms can assist with understanding the history and future changes; terms such as,
elasticity, inelasticity, supply and demand. Health care costs are changing over the years and by
understanding the history of health care economics will help individuals be prepared for future

Understanding how the flow of funds falls in line with knowing what transactions take place between
sellers and buyers. It is best to also understand where the monies sources come from, how the money

this process is known as elasticity or inelasticity (2007). Examining how these behaviors and decision

components that allocate how decisions are made for resources affects the need for supply and

market does not resourcefully arrange or distribute services and goods to the consumer (2007).
Inefficient organization of production will result in an unsatisfied buyer being able to purchase their

Omnivore s Dilemma Essay
Mr. Webb 5th period

Book Review In Michael Pollan s book The Omnivore s Dilemma he examines the main question
What should we have for dinner? (Page 1) He also examines the true meaning of food in today s
society. When we have just about any type of food available at our fingertips, it tends to cause a
dilemma, an omnivore s dilemma. We tend to make poor decisions due to the fact that we have so
many choices. To answer the question What should we have for dinner? Pollan decides that he needs
to know where food comes from. Through his journey Pollan discovers many problems with how food
is produced such as, food preservation techniques, and sanitary transportation. In the Omnivore s

He likes to eat junk food and McDonald s just as much as the rest of us. He is telling the story of the
Omnivore s Dilemma from his own point of view because, just like the rest of us, he is an omnivore.
He is explaining our epic food dilemma so the readers can understand and relate to his predicament.
He does a good job of using real world examples, like a meal from McDonald s, to help the readers
see the problem, which is that we have absolutely no clue where our food comes from, let alone what
products make up our food.
Michael Pollan argument in the Omnivore s Dilemma is very convincing because he has volunteered
countless hours of his own time to find out where food comes from, and what exactly the food is made
from. He visits many different farms, and actually learns how food begins its journey to his dinner
plate by being curious to learn whom, and what [he d] find at the far end of the food chain that keeps
[him] alive. (Page 33) By meeting with and talking to the owner of one of Iowa s most productive
farms, Pollan learns all of the ins and outs of farming, consequently learning the beginnings of his
dinner. He even purchased his own cow, steer 534, to track exactly where his food was going and how
it was being processed. [He] wanted to follow one of [the] steers through the life cycle. (Page 72) By
purchasing his own steer, we see how committed Pollan is to this project, and finding out exactly

A Summary Of Disliking Books By Gerald Graff
Disliking Books: A Summary
The essay Disliking Books by Gerald Graff gives reason to why so many kids and young adults dislike
reading. Graff mentions things from his childhood, and things from his time as a college student to
explain his reasoning. Being a part of a middle class family, Graff explains the stigma surrounding
studying and enjoying books in his childhood. Graff then shows us his experience that changed his
mind. Graff uses details from his life to give meaning to his ideas.
In Graff s childhood, he explains that if someone were to become a bookworm, they would likely get
beaten up. Even girls had to be careful; otherwise they would be labeled as stuck up . The idea of the
freedom of knowledge and developing ideas only scared Graff, and that carried on long after.
Finally at college, Graff was able to forget about being beaten up, only to now fear failing his classes.
He often could not force himself to do the required readings, and if he did, he simply did not know
what to say about them in class. Graff didn t have the proper vocabulary to explain his feelings of the
readings, if he even had any. He mentions near the end that the ... Show more content on

Eventually though, his defining moment was when his instructor mentioned that the book they were
reading at the time, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, had a controversial ending. He then became
curious, and decided to write his term paper on it. Graff describes reading the critics as picking up
exactly where the class discussion ended. Seeing what professionals thought, gave him the idea that he
was nearly the same as them, as he had the same thoughts, but was not as experienced with the
vernacular. Graff then reread the book, and did so eagerly, as he now had a reason to read. Looking for
issues gave him a sense of purpose, and showed that reading and intellectual discussion actually had

Health Care Reform in Politics Essay
Health Care Reform in Politics
Due to the upcoming presidential election, the two major political parties, and their candidates, have
been focusing on the primary problems that the nation will face. Chief among those problems is the
future of Medicare, the national health insurance plan. Medicare was enacted in 1965, under the
administration of Lyndon B. Johnson, in order to provide health insurance for retired citizens and the
disabled (Ryan). The Medicare program covers most people aged 65 or older, as well as handicapped
people who enroll in the program, and consists of two health plans: a hospital insurance plan (part A)
and a medical insurance plan (part B) (Marmor 22). Before Medicare, many Americans didn t have
health ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result of these problems, the program could cease to exist unless a solution is found. One of the
problems of Medicare itself is that it doesn t cover the costs of prescription drugs for its members; this
has led to one of the major reasons that the program is in danger. A great deal of personal healthcare
relies on the use of drugs, and since the program doesn t cover these costs, the individual must bear
them. According to the AARP, in 1999 out of pocket costs for prescription drugs were estimated to be
$450 per person each year (AARP). Obviously, members have joined the program to defray their
medical costs, but these figures indicate that they still have large costs to pay. The other problem faced
by the Medicare program is that it is also suffering from a lack of funds. According to Governor
George W. Bush, the financial health of Medicare is in serious jeopardy and might face deficit as soon
as 2010 (Bush). As a result of these major problems, one might wonder why the plan isn t scrapped for
another program; well according to polls done by the Public Agenda, an Internet public policy site,
American citizens are strongly in favor of Medicare, and would rather see the problems ironed out
(Public Agenda). Therefore it is necessary to come up with a solution, so that the Medicare program
remains intact. The most favorable solution for these problems is for the national government to

Perception And Perception Of Perception
The term friendship is defined as a mutual strand of affection between two or more people. It is a
stronger form of interpersonal bond than an association. It is a link between people who show trust
and altruism with one another without the placement of sexual or physical intimacy that commonly
happens in a romantic relationship. Friends tend to share common interests, demographics,
backgrounds, and traits of the self. However, before we get to know a person, we use perception to
categorize them into a certain role. It often causes us to assume that the other party is superior or
inferior to us. We do this more often than not without even realizing we ve engaged in perception.
Perception played a very large part in the first meeting of my best friend, Cinda, and I. In Chapter 4:
Interpersonal Perception (Floyd, 2011), there are many examples of the ways in which people
instantly perceive another person as being one way or another. This exact thing happened when I met
Cinda. Our perceptions of one another were not complimentary or nice, in fact, we were practically
enemies at the time. Negativity bias, or the tendency to weigh negative information more heavily than
positive (Floyd, 2011), would describe what we felt with each other. We were unable to see anything
good or complimentary about the other. What exactly brought on these feelings? One might ask. Well,
embarrassingly enough, it all started with a boy; Cinda and I had never even spoke to each other.

What a Story Reveals about the Story Teller Essay
Geoffrey Chaucer wrote the Canterbury Tales from the view of a pilgrim journeying with many other
travelers who all had tales to tell. I believe that the stories told by the characters in Chaucer s book
gives us insight into the individual spinning the tale as well as Chaucer as the inventor of these
characters and author of their stories. There are three main characters whose stories I will be using as
examples: The Knight s Tale, The Miller s Tale, and The Wife of Bath s Tale.
The knight told a tale of love, bravery, chivalry, justice, romance, and adventure. His story included
two cousins and sworn brothers, Palamon and Arcite, who were both enraptured by the love of one
woman, Emily. Emily was related to king Theseus who had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Secondly, it tells us his idea of bravery and devotion. Palamon and Arcite were not willing to give up
Emily to the other, although they had been great friends. The devotion lies not in their friendship, but
in their love of Emily. Likewise, the knight himself had left all to nobly fight for his cause; and still
had such devotion to his faith to join the pilgrimage. With smudges where his armour had left mark;
Just home from service, he had joined our ranks To do his pilgrimage and render thanks (The
Canterbury Tales, p.5). Thirdly, it shows us the knight s ideas of fortune and justice. I believe the
knight was optimistic in a practical sense. He viewed Fortune as a beneficial force of justice which is
reflected in his happy ending of the tale. Although he had a realistic note of sadness, the overall
outcome was good. All the characters prayed to different gods, and all got what they asked for.
Although Arcite wins Emily, he dies before he can claim her and she is later married to Palamon.
Lastly, the tale was constructed with such length and wordiness to convey the intelligence and
education of the speaker the Knight.
This story tells me that Chaucer holds the knight in high regard. As the creator of this character and
his tale, he displays his fondness of the characteristics which he attributes to the knight. Chaucer uses
many great adjectives to describe the knight in the general

Bad Leadership Research Paper
Leadership is both a complex and a multifaceted concept defined in different styles in diverse
contexts. In its traditional sense, leadership is all about influencing the organizational activities, as
well as people affiliated with that particular firm aiming at attaining certain predetermined goals. The
influence that a person tasked with leadership roles and responsibilities has determines whether he/she
is a quality leader or a bad leader. Indeed, the success of any contemporary enterprise depends on the
type of leaders that the organization recruits; quality or bad. It is readily apparent that quality leaders
base their leadership on getting followers to like them while bad leaders typically apply coercive
measures to enforce hard work and respect. The topic on how quality leadership compares with bad
leadership is the area of focus of this assignment. The various aspects of quality leaders and bad
leaders are compared and contrasted with the intent of advocating for quality leadership through
showing that quality leaders are more effective than their bad ... Show more content on

Apparently, many acceptable and credible circles presently judge quality leaders as good and tough
leaders as bad. Even so, quality leaders can be tough based on the strategies they adopt, and still retain
their reputation of being quality leaders. The failure of quality leaders to apply the right strategies for
preventing employees and other staff members from taking advantage of them can easily thwart their
leadership effectiveness. In that case, quality leaders need to embrace some positive toughness for
their leadership initiatives and styles to bear positive fruit. It is because quality leaders may inevitably
encounter situations requiring the use of authoritarian leadership methods. Applying this approach
does not imply that the quality leader has lost value for the dispositions mentioned

How Does Indecision Affect Hamlet s Mind
Having your head in the clouds is an idiom that describes Hamlet in a fashion that no other idiom or
description can. Throughout the play Hamlet, Hamlet never seems to be thinking clearly and can not
decide how he feels or what he wants to do. One day Hamlet is singing a song of joy and the next
showing fiery feelings through his own soliloquy. Shakespeare purposefully uses Hamlet s indecision,
to show the audience how one s inner struggle can affect their thoughts and decisions. Hamlet s
indecision is seen throughout the play, but during one soliloquy it is most prevalent. Hamlet questions
whether To be, or not to be: that is the question: (3.1.54). Hamlet s mind is wrapped and trapped into a
bubble of indecision that cannot be escaped ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hamlet has so far not been true in the revenge of his father s death. This due in most part to his
indecision. Hamlet specifically thinks, Now, whether it be. Bestial oblivion, or some craven scruple.
Of thinking too precisely on th event (4.4.38 40). Hamlet explicitly says that even he knows the reason
for not being able to revenge his own father s death. The indecision of killing Claudius as laid a seed
of inner struggle within Hamlets heart that is slowing growing and changing his decisions. This inner
struggle has caused even Hamlet to admit that he his being consumed by his own thoughts.
Shakespeare specifically has Hamlet reference his thoughts so that the audience knows that his
thoughts are being consumed. The other parts of the play with indecision are still snow piling into a
great understanding within the audiences mind of the effects of indecision on ones thoughts. To
enhance the audiences understanding of indecision, Shakespeare diligiently has indecision break up
what Hamlet says he has, cause and will and strength and means. To do t (4.4.45 46). The death of
Hamlet s father should give Hamlet full right and motivation to revenge his father s death.
Shakespeare uses this part of the plot to further his communication with the audience. Hamlet s
indecision has caused, what originally were strong thoughts and motivation within revenge to change
to thoughts of indecision. A strong bond of thoughts were broken by an inner struggle of indecision
that was able to even wash away the most powerful connections of family blood. Furthermore
Shakespeare also uses Hamlets own words to further his point on indecision. My thoughts be bloody,
or be nothing worth! (4.4.66). Hamlet s indecision had taken such a toll on Hamlet that he finally
decided that he would change the parameters on what his thoughts should be about. This

20 Ways to Motivate Staff
20 ways to motivate your employees without raising their pay By: Dave Worman, Dr. Motivation It is
a costly mistake to get lost in the false theory that more money equals happy employees. Believing
this is costing you valuable time, revenue, employees...and even threatening your own job. Cash will
always be a major factor in motivating people and a solid compensation plan is critical to attracting
and keeping key personnel. But the key is that additional cash is not always the only answer and in
many cases not even the best answer. Too many bonus or commission checks get cashed, spent and

Set career paths within your organization. Do you promote from within? I hope you can answer yes to
that. Although specific circumstances require you to look for talent outside your company you should
always first consider internal personnel. If you do this you are sending a very positive message to
every one that there are indeed further career opportunities within your organization. 6. Job Titles.
When you talk about job titles you are tapping the self esteem of people. How someone feels about the
way they are perceived in the workforce is a critical component to overall attitude and morale. Picture
a social gathering that includes some of your staff. The subject of work inevitably comes up. Will your
people be proud, or embarrassed, to share their title and workplace? The importance of feeling proud
of who you are and what you do is monumental. Be creative as you think of possibilities for titles.
Have your staff come up with ideas giving them input into the titles. Bottom line, you are dealing with
pride...and pride enhances a positive attitude...and a positive attitude is the foundation for continuing
success. 7. Good Work Environment. A recent industry study shows just how inaccurate your results

A Comparison Of Feminism In The Good Earth
Gloria Steinem, an American journalist once said, A feminist is anyone who recognizes the equality
and full humanity of women and men. This quote explains that any person who believes in feminism,
believes in the idea that men and women should be treated equally. Feminism is the emphasis that
women and men should not have divided opportunities. Feminism in literature is when authors use
feminist beliefs in their characters. They use characters in their literature to show how the men and
women are being treated equally, or how they are being treated unequally. Although it is difficult to
see that feminism is showed in The Good Earth, Pearl Buck finds ways to show feminism differently
throughout the female characters. O lan is one of the main characters and shows feminism in the
novel. She was a slave in the House of Hwang before she became the Wife of Wang Lung. O lan
helped Wang Lung achieve wealth, and she also helped their family survive during the famine. It said,
All through the long months of winter she lay dying and upon her bed, and for the first time Wang
Lung and his children knew what she had been in the house, and how she made comfort for them all
and they had not known it (274). It was always expected for O lan to do the jobs around the house for
the rest of the family, and when she died they finally realized how important she was to the household.
This shows feminism because it is a belief that women are only known for performing household
duties. Another

Review Of Vampire Bats
1. Vampire bats give blood to unrelated vampire bats for several reasons. Among the reasons are the
cost sharing of blood, the benefit of sharing blood and the probability that the bats that were given
blood will in turn reciprocate and give blood to other bats at a later date. The cooperative equilibria in
blood sharing among bats means that the sharing of blood will occur if the benefits of sharing blood
multiplied by the probability that blood sharing will be beneficial in the future is greater than the cost
of sharing blood. If a bat shares blood with another bat (even an unrelated bat), the bat that is the
recipient is expected to donate blood to other bats at a larger rate than it received at a later time.
A donor bat will give blood to a bat that has not had a meal so that this bat can have the opportunity to
hunt again, giving an increased chance that it will reciprocate to another bat that has not had a meal,
enabling the roost to maintain survival. In the event that a recipient bat does not reciprocate in the
future, that bat will not be donated to if it needs it in the future, thus allowing for recipient bats to be
donor bats in the future as needed.

Abstract
Shifting probability of credit status of past due or non performing loans across stage has always been

changing credit status has a major influence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A significant portion of those overdue bad loans will cause the rapid rise in the Non Performing Loans
(NPL) ratio for financial institutions, resulting in a serious erosion of profit, and causing a chain
reaction of bankruptcy and escalated financial crisis. The century old Lehman Brothers declared
bankruptcy in 2008 which caused a domino effect, not only hitting the U.S. economy, but also
triggering a global financial tsunami. Such disaster may be explained by the fact that banks recently
owns excessive amount of poor credits which may be the result of highly competitive banking
environment and reckless credit imprudence, even reaching an alarming level in bank s NPL ratios. In
order to correct this problem, the banking industry must make prudent and cautious decisions in the
beginning of loan auditing process and also recognize the dynamic fact that credit status is not static.
It shifts greatly throughout the life span of the loan credit. The change is more dramatic especially in
the case of past due or non performing loans. Only when banking institutions are fully aware of the
dynamic nature of credit status can the banking institutions avoid making the same mistake again.

Essay about What Really Happened to the Lindbergh Baby
What REALLY happened to Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr.? Patience Smith Intro to CJ System
CJ101 02 Prof. Dan Bilodeau On June 22, 1930, Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr. was born to the
infamous Lucky Lindy and his wife, Anne. When he was a mere 20 months old, he was kidnapped
from his crib in the house where parents and staff were in the house beneath him. The kidnapping
occurred from a second story window in a rainstorm where no one heard a thing! Here in lie the
questions that we will discuss in this paper. The police suspected an inside job from the beginning.

The New Jersey police became heavily involved in a battle over the jurisdiction of the case. Another
questionable problem with the evidence was that the child was pinned into his crib so that he wouldn t
move at night and somehow, when the child was abducted, whomever took him, didn t move the pins
or even touch the pins to get him out of the bed. There were no fingerprints on the ladder, not even
where the person that made the ladder would have left fingerprints, showing that everything had been
wiped clean. Then there was the ransom note that was written with grave misspellings and horrible
Germanic construction. The next question involved is with the courts, the adjudication, arraignment
and the preliminary hearing. Throughout all of the investigations, they came down with one principle
suspect. A Bronx carpenter by the name of Bruno Richard Hauptmann. He passed a $10 gold
certificate at a gas station from the ransom money and this led to his subsequent arrest, trial and finally
the death penalty. Ultimately, the police found about $14,000 or more of the ransom money at the
suspect s home. In newspapers, the case appeared open and shut. Hauptmann had entered the United
States as a stowaway, with a prison record in Germany for robberies.

Being a Chef is one of those professions that people love to dream about, a lot of people think that
being a chef means that you only cook all day. Wrong! As a matter of fact they cook, clean, run the
kitchen, and tell the other cooks what to do. The life of a cook is way more work than you think. Yes
cooking is what they love to do but it only takes some of their day. The other parts of their day is
preparing, ordering ingredients, setting prices and checking stock. They work very long hours and
have little time for relaxing. The life of a chef is not for everyone but those who do it love it. The

Partnership
Camisha Booker CA 156: Computerized Accounting 11 Partnership vs Sole Proprietorship March 11,
2014 Thinking about starting your own business? Do you prefer to work alone? Or do you prefer to
work with a partner? If you choose to work with a partner then the best business structure for you
would be the partnership structure. First you must ask yourself; do we have the same vision or
objectives on how to run the business? Are we able to communicate well with each other? Most
important question of all, do you trust this individual? If two of these three questions is no then maybe

Having discretionary time, more contacts, support and motivation is a big plus when starting a
business. The right partnership has these qualities. When one needs time to spend with family and
friends or even just to get the most important things dealing with the business done, having a partner is
a good ideal because days or weeks can be rotated among the two. By bringing on a partner, you
acquire a new network of contacts and potential customers. If one partner was to died or become
physical impaired while in the partnership agreement the other partner can take over the business
completely or choose to sell the other partner s half of the business (Price, 2012). With sole
proprietorship if the owner becomes impaired or dies the business can result in termination because
there is no one to take over the business (LaMance, 2013) If you are a team player, I say go for the
partnership, but talk things over with your potential partner before making any decisions. Now if you
choose to go in it alone with the sole proprietorship keep in mind that some investors think businesses
started under the sole proprietorship are less professional than any other structure that consist of two
or more people. Works Cited Partnership: Pros and Cons. (2014). Retrieved from Boundless:

Insurance and Medical Care Essay: Formal Assessment
A qualified health plan under the Affordable Care Act may not include pre existing condition

insurance companies may not cancel a policy should a person become ill.
Under the Affordable Healthcare Act implemented in 2014, an insurance plan that is certified by the
Health Insurance Marketplace, provides essential health benefits, follows established limits on cost
sharing (like deductibles, copayments, and out of pocket maximum amounts), and meets other
requirements. A qualified health plan will have a certification by each Marketplace in which it is sold.

supposed to teach 3rd and 4th grade math at the same time. When the plan changed from her doing 3rd

I did not like the cubby hangers because it seemed to be very messy and some students are not very

middle and a teaching area in the center of the room. Mrs. Henderson had her desk in the back corner.
She also had a carpeted area where her large variety of books were. She did not have a time out area

The Pros And Cons Of World Population Control
Have you ever wondered what the answer to world problems is? World population control is one
option, but it is not a good one. Some say that it would help improve life, and would help bring
balance to the world. However, I believe that population control would not truly help anyone. World
population control is not the answer to world problems, for it would take away human life, the right to
have kids, and in the long run would not help any living thing.
The idea of population control started out many years ago. The person who first started Planned
Parenthood wanted to control the population of African Americans because she wanted less of them
around (National Public Radio). She tried to persuade more African Americans to come to Planned
Parenthood than people of other races. In addition, there was forced population control during the
Holocaust, a time in World War II, when Nazi Germany tried to exterminate all Jews and others the
Germans did not like (National Public Radio). This was because Adolf Hitler discriminated against
anyone not white or German. In the late 20th century, the Chinese decided to make a rule to where

The Parable Of The Alert Servant Made Simple Essay
The Parable of the Alert Servant Made Simple (Mark 13:33 37)
By Matthew Payne
Jan 11, 2012
Mark 13:33 37 reads:
Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is. It is like a man going out to a far
country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded
the doorkeeper to watch. Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is
coming in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning lest, coming
suddenly, he find you sleeping. And what I say to you, I say to you all: Watch!
Throughout the New Testament, Jesus shared all about the signs of the time. He had been sharing that
there will be false Christs and there will be tribulation. The stars of Heaven will fall and all sorts of
things will happen before the coming of the end of days.
Jesus is much more than a wonderful person. While reading or listening to these parables, I hope you
will fully understand who He is and what is really going on. Today, Jesus has in fact gone to a far
country. This is no longer a parable. While it is true that when Jesus was on earth, this was a parable
with a funny significance, He had not yet gone to that far country but now Jesus has gone away. It
says just before this, concerning the day of his second coming, of that day no one knows, not even the
angels in Heaven nor the Son, but only the Father.
I have heard many recent accounts of people who have met Jesus in Heaven, and

Eating Poetry By Mark Strand
Mark Strand is one of the most prominent figures in contemporary American poetry, and yet his
poems are often considered some of the most elusive (Strand 59). Throughout Mark Strand s Eating
Poetry, this is shown greatly by his use of surrealism. The surrealism, which is releasing the creativity
of the unconscious mind, is one of Strand s ways of writing. The speaker exhibits this by saying that a
man is eating poetry, then that the man has eaten all of the poems, also that there are now dogs in the
poem, and finally, the speaker shows how the man has somewhat of a special connection with the dogs
that came out of nowhere. There are multiple places in which this poem takes place, which helps to
add to the surrealism that exists throughout the entire length of the poem. ... Show more content on

than the speaker because when she sees the speaker of the poem, she is in awe for she does not believe

To what extent is Nationalism inherently aggressive and expansionist? Intro: It is difficult to define
Nationalism as either inherently destructive or expansionist. It depends on the type of Nationalism and
the circumstances in which is arises and how people use or abuse it as an ideology. Heywood defines
four main breeds of Nationalism; Liberal Nationalism, Conservative Nationalism, Expansionist
Nationalism, Anti and post colonial Nationalism. One of the types of nationalism which is more likely
to be inherently destructive and expansionist is Expansionist Nationalism, as its name suggests, is
essentially destructive and expansionist. It advocates a form of national chauvinism where patriotism

I believe that modern expansionist and destructive imperialism is a logical consequence of the rise of
nationalism and that the liberation of conquered peoples was its unavoidable consequence. In some
regions, Europeans exerted complete political authority, in other areas, spheres of influence were
established, and leaving the existing governments as puppets, occasionally only economic influence
was exerted. Imperialism in Africa created colonies designed to serve the needs of the colonial
powers. Colonial boundaries often exacerbated long standing ethnic rivalries. The consequences of
expansionist nationalism were destructive and also predictable. Competition between the expanding
modern empires, rooted in expansionist nationalism, led to inter state wars, starting overseas in the
peripheral territories where these states sought to expand their rule, and it ended, during the 20th
century, in gigantic inter state wars at the centre. World Wars I and II brought the defeat of Germany
and Italy in comparison with France, England, America and Russia, but all of Europe suffered from
war devastation. In this period, the true off springs of nationalism who elevated this school to its
highest position and gave it its severest form were

Abstract A review of the main technologies currently available to produce wines with lower alcohol
(ethanol) levels was undertaken. These comprise technologies to reduce the initial sugar levels in the
grape juice; yeasts to produce less alcohol by diverting sugar metabolism to glycerol production; and
post fermentation technologies to remove some all of the alcohol from the wine. Some of the legal
issues around alcohol taxation and wine labelling are outlined, particularly those affecting export. The
major technologies are discussed, along with their limitations, particularly with regard to the effects
on sensory attributes (aroma and flavour). The potential for yeast strains with lower conversion
efficiencies is outlined, both for selected strains, for non Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts, and for
genetic modification. A summary of the application of reduced alcohol technologies

Structural Funding Policy in the EU Essays
Structural Funding Policy in the EU
The central aim of this paper is to examine European Union policy in terms of its agenda setting
characteristics. To do this, a theory of punctuated equilibrium is explored, based on the emergence and
recession of policy issues from the transnational policy agenda. The primary goal of this paper is to
define the current equilibrium and how it is punctuated. The secondary goal is to examine what forces
drive the punctuated equilibrium, so that we might predict punctuation in the future. To this end, I
hope to demonstrate the utility of the theory by studying structural funding (SF) policy within the
European Union.

The increasingly interdependent nature of the transnational system has resulted in national borders
becoming ever more ill matched with political and economic forces and reality. This interdependence
has made it possible for Western European states to transfer policy responsibilities to the transnational
level in order to shape, manage, control, take advantage of, and keep pace with the modern world.
To the extent that transnational authorities attempt to control, either directly or indirectly, the
economies and social welfare of its members, the study of policymaking is a process worth studying.
EU policymaking is governed by various instruments, including treaty provisions, regulations, and
directives. While many policy studies on the EU focus on the need for, and benefits of, general
economic and social policies, the more fundamental, and I would submit rigorous issues of specific
policy formation, and its impacts, are under researched.
The central aim of this paper is to begin closing that gap by examining EU policy in terms of its
agenda setting characteristics. To do this, I explore a theory of punctuated equilibrium, based on the
emergence and recession of policy issues from the transnational policy agenda. Defining the current
equilibrium and how it is punctuated is one goal of this paper. Also, examining what forces drive the
punctuated equilibrium, that is, under what conditions it occurs will help in understanding how we

Edna St. Vincent Millay s sonnet, What lips my lips have kissed and where and why
Edna St. Vincent Millay s sonnet, What lips my lips have kissed and where and why, is about being,
physically or mentally jaded, and thinking back to the torrid love of one s youth. The ghosts that haunt
her are the many lovers of her past; she s specifically trying to remember them all. She recalls the
passion she experienced and how there was a certain feeling within herself. Millay shows this through
her vivid imagery, use of the rain as a literary device and by paralleling herself with a lonely tree.
The use of symbols sets the tone of the piece. She personifies the rain in, But the rain/ Is full of ghosts

The seasons in the poem also can be seen as symbols of time passing in her life. Saying that in the
height of her life she was much in love and knew what love was she says this all with four words
summer sang in me. And as her life is in decline her lovers left her, this can be told by using winter as
a symbol because it is the season of death and decline from life and the birds left the tree in winter.
The birds can be seen as a literal symbol of the lovers that have left her or flown away or it can have
the deeper meaning that in the last stages of our life all of our memories leave us tittering to our
selves.
Paralleling herself with a lonely tree really sets into the mind how she feels about love. What birds
have vanished one by one. By saying this she speaks about how the birds leave the tree as winter
comes and how the tree does not care whether they are there or not. However, the tree does realize that
life is a lot quieter. By reading this one can assume that she feels that love plays a very small role in
her life over all, but in reading further she writes, I cannot say what loves have come and gone/ I only
know that summer sang in me/ A little while, it sings no more. She sounds almost remorseful of the
lovers and the memories that

My Art Museum Experience
1. Have you ever attended a major art museum like the DIA before? Yes I have attended DIA back in 7
or 8 grade with Port Huron School District.
2. How long did you explore the DIA? My Husband and I were in there from 10:30am to around 2pm
that day.
3. What time period, movement or artist captivated your interest? My husband and I really like the
artwork from 1800 s for the most part. At lot of painting we like were of landscapes or of animals. My
grandmother used to paint for a living. Nothing famous, but all of her paintings are of landscapes.
Share with others AT LEAST ONE thing that you learned during your visit related to the museum
experience and the art that you observed. I looked up more about Chevy by Edwin Henry Landseer; he
painted animal; particularly horses, dogs and stags. Learned that Queen Victoria commissioned several
pictures from the Edwin and enjoyed his paintings. She even had him painted her family pets. Even in
the 1800 s people want portraits of her loyal pets. I have so many people asking me for professionals
pictures of their family pets, but even in the 1800 those who could afford it want pictures of them in
paintings as well. I learn there s so many forms of artwork and really if you look anywhere there s all
different forms of artwork.
4. Did you attend the museum alone or did others travel with you? My husband went with me. My
mother in law really want to go, but with the time frames of needing to go didn t work with her

The Dramatic Significance of Sick Characters in Ola...
THE DRAMATIC SIGNIFICANCE OF SICK CHARACTERS IN OLA ROTIMI S PLAYS Odia
Clement Eloghosa ABSTRACT In this paper, the sick characters are studied through the examination
of their dramatic significance and contributions to the development of Ola Rotimi s drama. Three
aspects of dramatic significance are identified in this paper and we argue that the sick: (1) act as
witness and help the healthy establish truth, (2) create crisis situations that stir up diverse emotions in
the audience, and finally, (3) heighten dramatic tension which boosts the degree of suspense in the
plays. I INTRODUCTION The paper examines the dramatic significance of sick characters in Ola
Rotimi s plays. It covers four of Rotimi s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He identifies collectivist consciousness as the defining factor which crystallizes Rotimi s advancement
of themes like solidarity, followership and self sufficiency. Femi Osofisan, Toyin Akinosho, Umukoro
et al and Effiok Uwatt have made cursory remarks on Rotimi s use of sick characters and these are
worth reviewing here. Osofisan, examining the political imperative in African dramaturgy and theatre
practice, makes some passing comments on the sick in Hopes, a play he considers as belonging to the
tradition of socialist theatre and posits that the aim of the sick in that play is to teach our masses the
virtue of collective struggle, the irrelevance of tribal differences in face of common economic
exploitation and the possibility of heroism among the poor and down trodden (5). On his part,
Akinosho, reviewing the performance of Rasheed Gbadamosi s Behold My Redeemer, a play directed
by Ola Rotimi, and which has a psychiatric setting, makes brief comments on Rotimi s portrayal of
sick characters. He says, As director and playwright, Ola Rotimi is known for using the sick to portray
the Nigerian Society (11). He adds that in Our Husband, the playwright uses the sick to paint the
Nigerian politician as a mad power seeker . Umukoro et al, examining the major events in The Gods,
briefly interpret the use of sickness in the play thus, The only real significance

W. E. B. Dubois Dark Princess
People, no matter their race or color, have always wanted to be successful, live comfortably, and
provide for their families. While the definitions for success and comfort have changed over time, a
constant truth is that hard work and sacrifice are required to reach these goals. Moving from an
individual to the societal or political level, for many races and nations, progress can measure success.
Ethnic groups want progress towards equality, while nations, particularly those in Asia, Africa, and the
Middle East, want progress towards economic and industrial progress towards leveling with the West;
they also wish for political respect and autonomy. Since the end of the colonial era, there has been a
massive struggle by previously colonized nations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Examining W.E.B. Dubois novel Dark Princess, the characters of Sammy Scott and Sara Andrews
exemplify individualism completely. The honorable Sammy Scott was a leading black politician in
Chicago. Dubois described Sammy s beginnings: ...in 1910 by selling the right to gamble, keep houses
of prostitution, and commit petty theft, to certain men, white and black, who paid him in cash (Dubois,
pg. 82). Sammy is completely corrupt, wanting power and money for himself. He misses his
opportunity as a politician to help his district, make positive changes that could improve the lives of
the black people all around him. Instead he chooses to be a gangster, promoting gambling and
prostitution, and maintaining a criminal undertone in Chicago. Sara Andrews was equally calculating.
Dubois describes Sara on page 84 as having a good intellect without moral scruples and a clear idea of
the communal and social value of virginity, respectability, and good clothes . Dubois is saying she is
cunning, and in tune with what is expected in society. She knows what she needs to do to be
successful, and like Sammy, she wants all of the power for herself. Sammy and Sara both lived a dog
eat dog existence, and were willing to sacrifice others on their way to the top. It is important to note
that Dubois recognized individualism as a major obstacle for racial progress, and Sammy and Sara
demonstrated the issues stemming from individualism in Dark Princess. Unfortunately, others failed to
capitalize on Dubois foresight. Today there is an equal lack of cohesiveness amongst African
Americans, due to varying socioeconomic levels. At the time of civil rights, a black middle class was
able to forge ahead and have success. This professional level is still here today, but what also exists
today is the bottom of

Don t Leave Me This Way: The Analysis of Abandonment in Mary Shelly s Frankenstein and Judith
Guest s Ordinary People
Both Mary Shelley s Frankenstein and Judith Guest s Ordinary People display the consistent theme of
abandonment by guardians. Both protagonists, the Creature and Conrad, experience rejection from
their parents and constantly try to search for love and attention in different aspects of society since
they unfortunately can not receive it from their parents. Given that no individual wants to associate
with the Creature, he becomes immorally and seeks revenge on the entire human race for not
accepting him. Contrastly, Conrad has the support of several people in his ... Show more content on

Beth s nonchalant attitude towards Conrad becomes increasingly obvious and begins to really frustrate
him, ultimately leading him to lash out at her, listen, don t give me that, the only reason you care, the
only reason you give a fuck about it is because someone else knew about it first! You never wanted to
know anything I was doing or anything I wasnt doing (Guest: 110). It is evident that Conrad
constantly tries to spark conversations with his mother hoping that she will give him her undivided
attention, but it only results in him feeling as though he is a burden. The emotional detachment from
his mother forces him to distance himself from his entire family thinking that it would some how
make Beth happy. Instead of forcing himself to deal with his mom s distant attitude he exclaims, I
know why she never came out there, not once! I know! Hell she was going to goddamn Spain and
goddamn Portugal, why should she care if I was hung up by the goddamn balls, revealing that he
knows his mom has abandoned him as a son and has to deal with the fact that he is not the favorite son
in the family. He also comes to the realization that his mom is constantly trying to run away from the
responsibility of parenting and is still unable to show any kind of affection to her son who just tried to
commit suicide. Rather than asking how Conrad is feeling, she plays victim as if Conrad has rejected
her and

  • 2. Heat Lab Report Discussion Conductivity is the ability to pass on electrical current within a solution, a metal or even a gas. It can be affected by other chemical related factors such as the concentration, temperature and also the mobility and valence of ions. Yet the most conductive form occurs within aqueous solutions as it contains both cations and anions; where the solvent stabilises the attracting ions through a process called solvation. Within the various levels of ionic strength from low to high electricity flow, electrolytes can either be strong or weak, according to the reaction. Strong electrolytes are substances that are fully ionised in solution due to the positive and negative ions that migrate under the influence of an electric field. Therefore the concentration ... The purpose of the essay is to discuss what factors can contribute to building cohesive groups. There are many factors which can be useful in developing perfectionism within a group. These factors are as follow: membership and work environment factors, organisational factors and group development and maturity. Meredith Belbin s nine team roles also determine the degree to which cohesiveness is maintained. A team can be successful if the members know each other for a reasonable time. Moreover, they can build trust within such a group and as a result it can help them in building confidence to perform tasks better (Mullins, 2010). Thus the time, individuals skills, and the size of the group are significant aspects in building successful teams. Work environment is another factor which can help build and maintain perfectionism among team members. Nature of the task can contribute to the task and the degree of task difficulty should be moderated because too difficult tasks can cause conflicts, too easy one however boredom. Communication is also very important and tasks should be communicated clearly which can lead to cohesiveness. Technology is another aspect worth considering as the resources available in the workplace can contribute to developing successful teams (Mullins, 2010). Therefore, the manager should organise work according to the sources they have. Organisational factor can also play an important part in maintaining successful teams. Successful team work depends on management and leadership styles. Encouragement and understanding of individual s problems should be maintained. He does a good job of using real world examples, like a meal from McDonald s, to help the readers see the problem, which is that we have absolutely no clue where our food comes from, let alone what products make up our food. Michael Pollan argument in the Omnivore s Dilemma is very convincing because he has volunteered countless hours of his own time to find out where food comes from, and what exactly the food is made from. • 8. A Summary Of Disliking Books By Gerald Graff Disliking Books: A Summary The essay Disliking Books by Gerald Graff gives reason to why so many kids and young adults dislike reading. Graff mentions things from his childhood, and things from his time as a college student to explain his reasoning. Being a part of a middle class family, Graff explains the stigma surrounding studying and enjoying books in his childhood. Graff then shows us his experience that changed his mind. Graff uses details from his life to give meaning to his ideas. In Graff s childhood, he explains that if someone were to become a bookworm, they would likely get beaten up. Even girls had to be careful; otherwise they would be labeled as stuck up . The idea of the freedom of knowledge and developing ideas only scared Graff, and that carried on long after. Finally at college, Graff was able to forget about being beaten up, only to now fear failing his classes. He often could not force himself to do the required readings, and if he did, he simply did not know what to say about them in class. • 9. Health Care Reform in Politics Essay Health Care Reform in Politics Due to the upcoming presidential election, the two major political parties, and their candidates, have been focusing on the primary problems that the nation will face. Chief among those problems is the future of Medicare, the national health insurance plan. Medicare was enacted in 1965, under the administration of Lyndon B. Johnson, in order to provide health insurance for retired citizens and the disabled (Ryan). The Medicare program covers most people aged 65 or older, as well as handicapped people who enroll in the program, and consists of two health plans: a hospital insurance plan (part A) and a medical insurance plan (part B) (Marmor 22). One of the problems of Medicare itself is that it doesn t cover the costs of prescription drugs for its members; this has led to one of the major reasons that the program is in danger. A great deal of personal healthcare relies on the use of drugs, and since the program doesn t cover these costs, the individual must bear them. According to the AARP, in 1999 out of pocket costs for prescription drugs were estimated to be $450 per person each year (AARP). Obviously, members have joined the program to defray their medical costs, but these figures indicate that they still have large costs to pay. The other problem faced by the Medicare program is that it is also suffering from a lack of funds. According to Governor George W. Bush, the financial health of Medicare is in serious jeopardy and might face deficit as soon as 2010 (Bush). As a result of these major problems, one might wonder why the plan isn t scrapped for another program; well according to polls done by the Public Agenda, an Internet public policy site, American citizens are strongly in favor of Medicare, and would rather see the problems ironed out (Public Agenda). Therefore it is necessary to come up with a solution, so that the Medicare program remains intact. The most favorable solution for these problems is for the national government to ... • 10. Perception And Perception Of Perception The term friendship is defined as a mutual strand of affection between two or more people. It is a stronger form of interpersonal bond than an association. It is a link between people who show trust and altruism with one another without the placement of sexual or physical intimacy that commonly happens in a romantic relationship. Friends tend to share common interests, demographics, backgrounds, and traits of the self. However, before we get to know a person, we use perception to categorize them into a certain role. It often causes us to assume that the other party is superior or inferior to us. We do this more often than not without even realizing we ve engaged in perception. Perception played a very large part in the first meeting of my best friend, Cinda, and I. In Chapter 4: Interpersonal Perception (Floyd, 2011), there are many examples of the ways in which people instantly perceive another person as being one way or another. This exact thing happened when I met Cinda. Our perceptions of one another were not complimentary or nice, in fact, we were practically enemies at the time. Negativity bias, or the tendency to weigh negative information more heavily than positive (Floyd, 2011), would describe what we felt with each other. We were unable to see anything good or complimentary about the other. What exactly brought on these feelings? One might ask. Well, embarrassingly enough, it all started with a boy; Cinda and I had never even spoke to each other. Ironically ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. What a Story Reveals about the Story Teller Essay Geoffrey Chaucer wrote the Canterbury Tales from the view of a pilgrim journeying with many other travelers who all had tales to tell. I believe that the stories told by the characters in Chaucer s book gives us insight into the individual spinning the tale as well as Chaucer as the inventor of these characters and author of their stories. There are three main characters whose stories I will be using as examples: The Knight s Tale, The Miller s Tale, and The Wife of Bath s Tale. The knight told a tale of love, bravery, chivalry, justice, romance, and adventure. His story included two cousins and sworn brothers, Palamon and Arcite, who were both enraptured by the love of one woman, Emily. Emily was related to king Theseus who had ... Palamon and Arcite were not willing to give up Emily to the other, although they had been great friends. The devotion lies not in their friendship, but in their love of Emily. Likewise, the knight himself had left all to nobly fight for his cause; and still had such devotion to his faith to join the pilgrimage. With smudges where his armour had left mark; Just home from service, he had joined our ranks To do his pilgrimage and render thanks (The Canterbury Tales, p.5). Thirdly, it shows us the knight s ideas of fortune and justice. I believe the knight was optimistic in a practical sense. He viewed Fortune as a beneficial force of justice which is reflected in his happy ending of the tale. Although he had a realistic note of sadness, the overall outcome was good. All the characters prayed to different gods, and all got what they asked for. Although Arcite wins Emily, he dies before he can claim her and she is later married to Palamon. Lastly, the tale was constructed with such length and wordiness to convey the intelligence and education of the speaker the Knight. This story tells me that Chaucer holds the knight in high regard. As the creator of this character and his tale, he displays his fondness of the characteristics which he attributes to the knight. • 12. Bad Leadership Research Paper Leadership is both a complex and a multifaceted concept defined in different styles in diverse contexts. In its traditional sense, leadership is all about influencing the organizational activities, as well as people affiliated with that particular firm aiming at attaining certain predetermined goals. The influence that a person tasked with leadership roles and responsibilities has determines whether he/she is a quality leader or a bad leader. Indeed, the success of any contemporary enterprise depends on the type of leaders that the organization recruits; quality or bad. It is readily apparent that quality leaders base their leadership on getting followers to like them while bad leaders typically apply coercive measures to enforce hard work and respect. The topic on how quality leadership compares with bad leadership is the area of focus of this assignment. This quote explains that any person who believes in feminism, believes in the idea that men and women should be treated equally. Feminism is the emphasis that women and men should not have divided opportunities. Feminism in literature is when authors use feminist beliefs in their characters. They use characters in their literature to show how the men and women are being treated equally, or how they are being treated unequally. Although it is difficult to see that feminism is showed in The Good Earth, Pearl Buck finds ways to show feminism differently throughout the female characters. O lan is one of the main characters and shows feminism in the novel. She was a slave in the House of Hwang before she became the Wife of Wang Lung. O lan helped Wang Lung achieve wealth, and she also helped their family survive during the famine. It said, All through the long months of winter she lay dying and upon her bed, and for the first time Wang Lung and his children knew what she had been in the house, and how she made comfort for them all and they had not known it (274). • 17. Review Of Vampire Bats 1. Vampire bats give blood to unrelated vampire bats for several reasons. Among the reasons are the cost sharing of blood, the benefit of sharing blood and the probability that the bats that were given blood will in turn reciprocate and give blood to other bats at a later date. The cooperative equilibria in blood sharing among bats means that the sharing of blood will occur if the benefits of sharing blood multiplied by the probability that blood sharing will be beneficial in the future is greater than the cost of sharing blood. If a bat shares blood with another bat (even an unrelated bat), the bat that is the recipient is expected to donate blood to other bats at a larger rate than it received at a later time. A significant portion of those overdue bad loans will cause the rapid rise in the Non Performing Loans (NPL) ratio for financial institutions, resulting in a serious erosion of profit, and causing a chain reaction of bankruptcy and escalated financial crisis. The century old Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy in 2008 which caused a domino effect, not only hitting the U.S. economy, but also triggering a global financial tsunami. Such disaster may be explained by the fact that banks recently owns excessive amount of poor credits which may be the result of highly competitive banking environment and reckless credit imprudence, even reaching an alarming level in bank s NPL ratios. In order to correct this problem, the banking industry must make prudent and cautious decisions in the beginning of loan auditing process and also recognize the dynamic fact that credit status is not static. It shifts greatly throughout the life span of the loan credit. The change is more dramatic especially in the case of past due or non performing loans. Only when banking institutions are fully aware of the dynamic nature of credit status can the banking institutions avoid making the same mistake again. It is like a man going out to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch. The film rendition of this novel produced by Baz Luhrmann was a ginormous box office hit, that revenued about 351 million dollars. The film starts world renounced actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire. Overall the film version of The Great Gatsby truly captured the theme that the American Dream is often not as attainable as it is made out to be which is presented in the book. This is seen through the portrayal of Daisy and Gatsby s relationship, Nick s location while he narrates the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is a major difference between the two; in the book we are unaware of where Nick is telling the story from, but in the film he is writing the story in a sanitarium. This speaks volumes about Nick s mental state after leaving Long Island and all of the palaver surrounding it. Nick intended to reach the American Dream in a similar way to Gatsby. He wanted to become successful in some way, so he surrounded himself with people who had recently found success. He did this by moving to West Egg. Nick describes his experience with losing faith in humanity during his time in Long Island saying, Only Gatsby...was exempt from my reaction Gatsby, who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn (Fitzgerald 2). Nick left the city more bereft and hopeless than he was when he arrived. He understood that Gatsby did not reach his aspirations, but he also knew that there is seemingly higher value to the relationships and lessons in life than the possessions and perfections presented by the ideals of the American Dream. Nick posses the counter argument to the theme; he essentially asks if the American Dream is really worth all the sacrifice that comes with it. This question is left for a morally collapsing society to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Structural Funding Policy in the EU Essays Structural Funding Policy in the EU The central aim of this paper is to examine European Union policy in terms of its agenda setting characteristics. To do this, a theory of punctuated equilibrium is explored, based on the emergence and recession of policy issues from the transnational policy agenda. The primary goal of this paper is to define the current equilibrium and how it is punctuated. The secondary goal is to examine what forces drive the punctuated equilibrium, so that we might predict punctuation in the future. To this end, I hope to demonstrate the utility of the theory by studying structural funding (SF) policy within the European Union. Supranational integration has been one of the most distinctive features of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The increasingly interdependent nature of the transnational system has resulted in national borders becoming ever more ill matched with political and economic forces and reality. This interdependence has made it possible for Western European states to transfer policy responsibilities to the transnational level in order to shape, manage, control, take advantage of, and keep pace with the modern world. To the extent that transnational authorities attempt to control, either directly or indirectly, the economies and social welfare of its members, the study of policymaking is a process worth studying. EU policymaking is governed by various instruments, including treaty provisions, regulations, and directives. While many policy studies on the EU focus on the need for, and benefits of, general economic and social policies, the more fundamental, and I would submit rigorous issues of specific policy formation, and its impacts, are under researched. The central aim of this paper is to begin closing that gap by examining EU policy in terms of its agenda setting characteristics. To do this, I explore a theory of punctuated equilibrium, based on the emergence and recession of policy issues from the transnational policy agenda. Defining the current equilibrium and how it is punctuated is one goal of this paper. Also, examining what forces drive the punctuated equilibrium, that is, under what conditions it occurs will help in understanding how we might ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Edna St. Vincent Millay s sonnet, What lips my lips have kissed and where and why Edna St. Vincent Millay s sonnet, What lips my lips have kissed and where and why, is about being, physically or mentally jaded, and thinking back to the torrid love of one s youth. The ghosts that haunt her are the many lovers of her past; she s specifically trying to remember them all. She recalls the passion she experienced and how there was a certain feeling within herself. Millay shows this through her vivid imagery, use of the rain as a literary device and by paralleling herself with a lonely tree. The use of symbols sets the tone of the piece. The seasons in the poem also can be seen as symbols of time passing in her life. Saying that in the height of her life she was much in love and knew what love was she says this all with four words summer sang in me. And as her life is in decline her lovers left her, this can be told by using winter as a symbol because it is the season of death and decline from life and the birds left the tree in winter. The birds can be seen as a literal symbol of the lovers that have left her or flown away or it can have the deeper meaning that in the last stages of our life all of our memories leave us tittering to our selves. Paralleling herself with a lonely tree really sets into the mind how she feels about love. What birds have vanished one by one. By saying this she speaks about how the birds leave the tree as winter comes and how the tree does not care whether they are there or not. However, the tree does realize that life is a lot quieter. By reading this one can assume that she feels that love plays a very small role in her life over all, but in reading further she writes, I cannot say what loves have come and gone/ I only know that summer sang in me/ A little while, it sings no more. She sounds almost remorseful of the lovers and the memories that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. The Dramatic Significance of Sick Characters in Ola... THE DRAMATIC SIGNIFICANCE OF SICK CHARACTERS IN OLA ROTIMI S PLAYS Odia Clement Eloghosa ABSTRACT In this paper, the sick characters are studied through the examination of their dramatic significance and contributions to the development of Ola Rotimi s drama. Three aspects of dramatic significance are identified in this paper and we argue that the sick: (1) act as witness and help the healthy establish truth, (2) create crisis situations that stir up diverse emotions in the audience, and finally, (3) heighten dramatic tension which boosts the degree of suspense in the plays. I INTRODUCTION The paper examines the dramatic significance of sick characters in Ola Rotimi s plays. It covers four of Rotimi s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He identifies collectivist consciousness as the defining factor which crystallizes Rotimi s advancement of themes like solidarity, followership and self sufficiency. Femi Osofisan, Toyin Akinosho, Umukoro et al and Effiok Uwatt have made cursory remarks on Rotimi s use of sick characters and these are worth reviewing here. Osofisan, examining the political imperative in African dramaturgy and theatre practice, makes some passing comments on the sick in Hopes, a play he considers as belonging to the tradition of socialist theatre and posits that the aim of the sick in that play is to teach our masses the virtue of collective struggle, the irrelevance of tribal differences in face of common economic exploitation and the possibility of heroism among the poor and down trodden (5). On his part, Akinosho, reviewing the performance of Rasheed Gbadamosi s Behold My Redeemer, a play directed by Ola Rotimi, and which has a psychiatric setting, makes brief comments on Rotimi s portrayal of sick characters. He says, As director and playwright, Ola Rotimi is known for using the sick to portray the Nigerian Society (11). He adds that in Our Husband, the playwright uses the sick to paint the Nigerian politician as a mad power seeker . Umukoro et al, examining the major events in The Gods, briefly interpret the use of sickness in the play thus, The only real significance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. W. E. B. Dubois Dark Princess People, no matter their race or color, have always wanted to be successful, live comfortably, and provide for their families. While the definitions for success and comfort have changed over time, a constant truth is that hard work and sacrifice are required to reach these goals. Moving from an individual to the societal or political level, for many races and nations, progress can measure success. Ethnic groups want progress towards equality, while nations, particularly those in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, want progress towards economic and industrial progress towards leveling with the West; they also wish for political respect and autonomy. Since the end of the colonial era, there has been a massive struggle by previously colonized nations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Examining W.E.B. Dubois novel Dark Princess, the characters of Sammy Scott and Sara Andrews exemplify individualism completely. The honorable Sammy Scott was a leading black politician in Chicago. Dubois described Sammy s beginnings: ...in 1910 by selling the right to gamble, keep houses of prostitution, and commit petty theft, to certain men, white and black, who paid him in cash (Dubois, pg. 82). Sammy is completely corrupt, wanting power and money for himself. He misses his opportunity as a politician to help his district, make positive changes that could improve the lives of the black people all around him. Instead he chooses to be a gangster, promoting gambling and prostitution, and maintaining a criminal undertone in Chicago. Sara Andrews was equally calculating. Dubois describes Sara on page 84 as having a good intellect without moral scruples and a clear idea of the communal and social value of virginity, respectability, and good clothes . Dubois is saying she is cunning, and in tune with what is expected in society. She knows what she needs to do to be successful, and like Sammy, she wants all of the power for herself. Sammy and Sara both lived a dog eat dog existence, and were willing to sacrifice others on their way to the top. It is important to note that Dubois recognized individualism as a major obstacle for racial progress, and Sammy and Sara demonstrated the issues stemming from individualism in Dark Princess. Unfortunately, others failed to capitalize on Dubois foresight. Today there is an equal lack of cohesiveness amongst African Americans, due to varying socioeconomic levels. At the time of civil rights, a black middle class was able to forge ahead and have success. This professional level is still here today, but what also exists today is the bottom of ... You never wanted to know anything I was doing or anything I wasnt doing (Guest: 110). It is evident that Conrad constantly tries to spark conversations with his mother hoping that she will give him her undivided attention, but it only results in him feeling as though he is a burden. The emotional detachment from his mother forces him to distance himself from his entire family thinking that it would some how make Beth happy. Instead of forcing himself to deal with his mom s distant attitude he exclaims, I know why she never came out there, not once! I know! Hell she was going to goddamn Spain and goddamn Portugal, why should she care if I was hung up by the goddamn balls, revealing that he knows his mom has abandoned him as a son and has to deal with the fact that he is not the favorite son in the family.
