How Did The Macedonians Rule Over The Golden Age Of...
Historians regularly categorize important eras throughout history for the distinction it holds. Heralding
a period of prosperity and security in all spheres political, social, economic, and culture is the Golden
Age. Although the history of Byzantium is marked by constant challenges and various levels of
successes, the era of the Macedonian dynasty represents the critical centuries of Byzantine prosperity
and influence. Thus, this paper aims to demonstrate through an exploration of the political, and socio
cultural context of Byzantine society the extent to which the Macedonians ruled over the Golden Age
of Byzantium in the ninth to eleventh centuries. Before this discussion may begin, it is important to
note the various members of the Macedonian dynasty. While starting with Basil I, a peasant from
either Thrace or Macedonian who moved to Constantinople and quickly rose up the ranks, the long
line of Macedonians rulers over the next 194 years were punctuated with rulers who associate
themselves with this dynasty through marriage, a process called dynastic grafting . Using the
legitimacy of the Macedonians to advance their own individual ambitions, various emperors
nevertheless reflect their belief in the consolidated power and authority in the name of the
Macedonians, thus consequently also reflecting the stability of the political structure at the time. This
contrasts other eras of Byzantium history where individuals ruthlessly took power without paying
much mind to

Who Is David Adjaye Sunken House
Sunken House Analysis
One of the things that most architects strive to achieve in their work is to make it stand out and really
add to its location s surroundings. This was definitely accomplished by David Adjaye in his Sunken
House project. In 2007, Adjaye designed a house for photographer Ed Reeve which is why today it is
also called Ed s Shed. However, the Sunken House is also a very deserving name. On the lot there was
a space already dug out for a basement foundation, however Adjaye had no intentions of including
some traditional basement. Instead, he used the lowered area to make a hidden first floor, and then
have the driveway connect to the second floor rather than the first/ground floor. This is just the
beginning of some of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of the simple box style he uses, most all of the walls were constructed off site and then
assemble or put together on site. This caused the actual construction process of this building to be
completed in just weeks with efficiency that should be considered rather innovative. This shows that
even the way something comes together can be part of design or architecture. Ultimately the end result
or final product can reflect to the process and the journey made to get to it, which is just another
outstanding design reflected in Adjaye s project.
In conclusion there are many innovative or modernized design styles of Adjaye in this Sunken House
project, and many of his other projects reflect similar design concepts. This just goes to show that you
can really see an artist, a designer, and also an architect as they mature in their design concepts and as
they gain experience and go through their career. Also however, it is important to maintain your design
concepts and build upon them to improve your work and set apart yourself from others, just like your
work will set apart itself form its

The Harm Of A Smolder Research Paper
Blazes, seethes, etcetera are intermittent in numerous homes over the globe, especially among children
with the ages 3 to 13. The expression smolder suggests that the disturbance identified with the blazing
is more than the injury is made out to be. Copies are depicted by compelling skin hurt that causes the
impacted skin cells to fail miserably. An incredible measure of individuals can recover from smolders
without the stresses of further confusions and wellbeing issues, dependent upon the cause and level of
harm. A great deal of the more grave seethes require moment emergency human services to forestall

They cause the most mischief, extending through every layer of skin. It is trusted that severely charred
areas are the most agonizing, this nonetheless, is a misconception. At the point when the harm of the
smolder is so extreme, it is liable to bring about nerve harm which results in not having the capacity to
feel any torment by any stretch of the imagination. These smolders don t have a set time in which they
recoup. (Richardson 41) They likewise can t be dealt with from home, it is key that one looks for

Importance of Hunting
Importance of hunting.
Like baseball and apple pie, hunting is an American tradition shared by young and old, rich and poor,
regardless of social or economic status. Three out of every ten people are against hunting but for what
reasons? What makes them stand out from the seven out of ten that are for hunting? My preference
supports hunting for many reasons. Hunting is important because without it there would be animals
struggling to survive because of the shortage of the nutrient food they need on a daily basis to stay
healthy. It would also cut down the number of damage done to vehicles by animals. It also gets more

Alice And The Video Games
Alice and the Video Games Alice, an ignorant little girl from Alice and the Wonderland tumbled down
the rabbit hole into a world of meaninglessness (IMDb); today, proponents of banning violent video
games are following Alice, stumbling over themselves into a pitfall of a lack of substantial evidence
and reasoning. An exemplary example of such a proponent is Eric Roberts, the uncredentialed author
of the article Violent Video Games Produce Violent Behavior in Our Nation s Youth and Should Be
Banned . On top of making groundless claims against violent video games, Roberts lumps in unrelated
elements simply to appeal to pathos and vainly attempts to reel in his far fetched conclusions using a
plethora of fallacies to back up his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the latter half of his first argument, Roberts boldly claims Violent video games equate to violent
behavior, especially in children whose brains are not fully formed yet and a game rated MA (Mature)
doesn t stop a kid from playing it, yet there is utterly no evidence supporting these poor claims. In
reality, according to the Entertainment Software Rating Board s official website, a majority of parents
check the video game rating before purchasing it for their child (ESRB). Robert draws a hasty
generalization in hopes that readers will gloss over such details and ignorantly agree with Robert s
meaningless and false claims.
A vast majority of Robert s argument is based around women being portrayed as helpless victims or
sexual objects. Drawing on sympathetic feelings, Robert equates violent video games to sexual ones
and generalizes them as a whole. While attempting to indirectly attack violent video games, he utilizes
the straw man fallacy to prey on a vaguely associated, weaker target: sexual video games. He criticizes
these sexual games to coerce compassionate support, a mere gaudy bauble for naive readers to blindly
listen to Robert s argument. In fact, Roberts gives absolutely no evidence to state any link between
violent and sexual video games, much less a link between how sexual video games translate into sexist
or aggressive behavior in the modern world. Rather,

Theories Of The Slope Fallacy
Special Pleading: Everything must have a source or creator. Example If Jesus is God s son, then who
created God? God has no creator he is eternal.
Contradictory Premises: Something you say that goes against what you said earlier. Example If God
can do anything, he can make a stone that he can t list.
Undistributed Middle Term: A specific type of error that s in deductive reasoning (The minor premise
and the major premise of a syllogism might or might not overlap) Example We are mammals,
mammals are warm blooded, and dogs are mammals so they are warm blooded
Faulty Analogy:: Relying on comparing to prove something other than arguing for it. Example
education is like cake; a small amount tastes sweet, but eat too much and your teeth will rot out.

Medea and Jason and the Golden Fleece Essays
Medea and Jason and the Golden Fleece
Medea and Jason and the Golden Fleece are two well known Greek stories. In both these stories the
Olympian gods in the stories play important roles that affect the lives of both Jason and Medea. The
behaviors of these two character also have a great contrast between them. In the story of Jason and the
Golden Fleece , Jason is the son of Aeson who is the legitimate king of Iolcus, in Thessaly. Aeson s
half brother Pelias steals the throne away from Aeson making himself the new king of Iolcus. Jason is
the rightful heir to the thrown but his father feared for his life and sent him to live with the centaur

For Medea must fall in love with Jason and then she will use her great skill with magic to help Jason
acquire the fleece. Because of Hera s hatred towards Pelias Medea s life is now destined for extreme
agony, shame, and guilt. Her love for Jason causes her to tear away from her loving parents and
dishonor her father by helping his enemy. Hera s plan to avenge Pelias also flood Medea s head with
thoughts to keep her from straying from Hera s plan. Unfortunately for Medea her decision to help
Jason was not her own and was a careful thought out plan by Hera. Her life would never again be the
same. Even though Jason promises to love her always and promises that she will be his wedded wife,
he breaks this promise as soon as she become old and he is given the opportunity to marry royalty.
Medea decisions were not in any way wise but if it were not for the arrows of Eros she would have
had better judgment on the stranger. Medea s behavior in this story shows that of loyalty and
confusion in her heart. She is in agony because she can not conceive as to why she feels so much love
for a stranger and does not wish to dishonor her father by doing so. But then she is constantly

CHAPTER 11 QUESTIONS
1. Distinguish among depreciation, depletion, and amortization expenses.
Depreciation refers to the cost allocation of tangible long term assets; depletion refers to the cost
allocation of natural resources; and amortization refers to the cost allocation of intangible assets. All
three terms have similar underlying principles governing their use.
2. What factors must be considered in determining the periodic deprecation charges that should be
made for a company s depreciable assets?
Four separate factors must be considered in determining the periodic depreciation charges that should
be made for a company s assets. They are (1) asset cost, (2) residual or salvage value, (3) useful life,

IAS 36 differs from U.S. GAAP in that the discounted sum of future cash flows, rather than the
undiscounted sum, is used to determine whether an impairment loss exists.
13. If a non US company chooses to revalue a long term operating asset upward in accordance with
IAS 16, how is the unrealized gain on the revaluation recognized in the financial statements?
If a non U.S. company chooses to revalue a long term operating asset upward in accordance with IFRS
16, the unrealized gain on the revaluation is recognized as a revaluation equity reserve. This equity
reserve increases the reported amount of equity but is not shown as a gain in the income statement.
14. Briefly describe the three types of intangible assets in terms of amortization and impairment.
For accounting purposes, recorded intangible assets come in three varieties:
a. Intangible assets that are amortized. The impairment test for these intangibles is the same as the two
step test used for tangible long term operating assets.
b. Intangible assets that are not amortized. The impairment test for these intangibles involves a simple
one step comparison of the book value to the fair value.
c. Goodwill, which is not amortized. The goodwill impairment test is a two step process that first
involves estimating the fair value of the entire reporting unit to which the goodwill is

Present Day Teenagers Essay
As time passes, change is inevitable; depending on the situation, change results in positive or negative
effects. In the case of present day teenagers versus teenagers in the good old days , the changes that
occurred were negative. When comparing the two generations, the differences could not be more
apparent in all aspects of the term. Society has involved in many ways such as communication,
technology, and lifestyle practices. Teenagers have been impacted the most in the aforementioned
societal changes. Teenagers have done a complete turnaround compared to old school teenagers, and it
is evident that they are drastically different in their values, work ethic, and behaviors. When
contrasting the two generations of teenagers, the most obvious change is the sense of entitlement
teenagers have developed. Majority of teens nowadays believe that parents owe them, and that they
should not have to work for anything in life. These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Old school parents made their kids go to church, made sure their education was a priority, and made
sure they have raised reliable and independent teens. Teenagers today, want to be grown in the
physical sense rather than focusing on priorities to survive this unfair world. The reason for present
day teens to be so caught up on the wrong things may be because they value the wrong things and
people. 21st century juveniles use rappers, who glorify sex, money, drugs, and designer clothes, as
role models. As a result, these teens are more concerned about how they look and other peoples
opinions rather than creating their own brand and standing out. Today s adolescents have become
more self centered, which is why they no longer value a sense of community or care to create real
connections. Instead, these young people opt to stay inside staring at their phone or tv, thus only

Exploring Social Patterns in the Renaissance Through Fashion
Exploring Social Patterns in the Renaissance Through Fashion
Fashion reflects the attitudes of a society more than any other art form. Like art, fashion is a material
record of the ideals that swayed the nations at the time of their creation. Through examining the styles,
and tastes of a particular era, we can realize where the interests and priorities of a time lie. As Frank
Parsons wrote in his 1920 study, The Psychology of Dress, There is surly no better field in which to
trace the devious paths of human thought than in that of clothes, where man has ever given free play
to self expression, in a way which, thought not always a credit to his intelligence, is yet quite true to
his innermost self, whether he will acknowledge it or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Clothing expression in medieval Europe, like all other forms of artistic expression at this time, found
it s biggest outlet in the ecclesiastical field, as this was where all the money was to be found. The
churches employed all the best builders and craftsmen in creating their great cathedrals, and art works.
In clothing, the church dictated what sorts of materials were made, and brought into the area, what
colors were in use, and what styles were used, influencing the secular as well as ecclesiastical dress. In
the feudal system only great Barons and their families wore fine cloths, as clothing was a symbol of
rank and importance. Each family made their own clothes, so fashion was very individualistic in style,
and each family had their own characteristics. With an increase of wealth in the area, and the
beginning of the crusades, new elaborate styles were introduced into the scene. Fashions became
strange, and grotesque in nature reflecting the constant struggles and wars of the time, as fantasy and
the grotesque generally influence social costumes accompanying times of war. Women in their
headgear actually wore huge horns, like an ox, that towered above them and supported a veil, and men
s shoes were peaked and extended six inches in front of them for common men, and a foot for
gentlemen, and two feet for noblemen.
The church frowned on the extreme finery, painted faces, and low cut dresses of the women. But as

The Problem Of Chronic Homelessness
According to suitcaseclinic.org homelessness is a temporary condition that people fall into when they
cannot afford to pay for a place to live, or when their current home has been declared unsafe or even
unstable. According to Habitat.org, this issue affects between 1.6 million to close to 3 million people
within the United States. The issue is growing throughout the world, but what is the root cause? Many
people wonder how they can help. Most tend to believe that the solution is as simple as just giving
them money to use for daily living. Even though their root cause for their issue isn t money. It is the
fact that they either don t know how to use their money properly/ responsibly. The main causes of
chronic homelessness include poverty, disability, mental illness, along with substance abuse or
addiction. Poverty is a hard but doable cycle to break and becomes more and more difficult to get out
once you start to fall behind a specific income level. Once people reach that point they then usually
are not able to obtain the proper resources for the acquired knowledge and resources that are necessary
for a higher paying job. Disability affects a great percentage of the homeless. This is usually caused by
some injury that prevents them from working numerous jobs within their societies and without their
dependable income they then fall into the poverty cycle. Mental illness impacts the homeless with
diseases like depression, PTSD, and schizophrenia. When these illnesses are

My First Thoughts Of Buffalo State
My first thoughts of Buffalo State, I had many different ideas on what I should expect. First I was very
excited to step foot in a place that I never been. I love experiencing new places. Considering I never
been to the Buffalo State college or even orientation I expected the best. I figured the campus be
beautiful and very spacy. I researched facts about Buffalo State and I was very surprised to see how
many students attended. I love the fact that the college presented a lot of diversity. I also expected that
the college life would be very social since I asked the former students of Buffalo State about it. Of
course I was a little nervous that there was a little chance that it May not be anything close to what I
expected. The helping hands on the college life I expected would be top notch since there were so
many students living on campus. When I received the letter that I would be attending the EOP
program which I applied for I was very excited. I wasn t really sure exactly what EOP actually was but
I hoped for the best. My mom gave me a brief description on what the program was. I didn t like the
fact that it was three weeks long and the first thing that came to my mind when I heard that was my
summer was coming to an end quite early. I didn t think too negative about it but I hoped that it gave

Capitalism and the Natural Environment Essay
Concept of capitalism can be difficult to understand. It is commonly identified by economist and
political philosophers as a system in which the means of production are privately owned and operated
in the free market in exchange for a profit (Galbraith, 1952). The economical/social system determines
the structure of production, the allocation of inputs and outputs, and consumption of goods. Capitalism
remains popular in America because it values freedom, much like the people in our country. This is
true because it allows individuals to set their own plans and pursue their own goals; in addition, one
can decide what career they would enjoy most, thus creating an incentive and reward for achieving
ones ambitions. In a free market, everyone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Capitalism leads to the creation of unprecedented wealth, advanced technology, and wide prosperity.
Yet capitalism is denounced as a system of greed, materialism, and ruthless dog eat dog competition
One positive implication capitalism has to the natural environment is industrial ecology, a system of
chain production and consumption, serving to the lowest environmental impacts in a most
environmentally sustainable economy as the main goal of operation (Richards Pearson, 1998). The
Companies in a like to operate in such way because of four major reasons. The most important factor
is known as the corporate well being, for it is determined by higher profits and growth provided by
innovations in an industry. Profits are increased from recognizing the production ineffiency costs that
comes from wasted inputs and energy losses; this allowing cost savings to increase and ineffiency to
decrease. compliance with cleaner technology alternatives such as ones that produce less waste and
less energy will provide long term savings which are both beneficial to the environment and the
business at hand. A real world example freight company changes their salvaged driving equipment to
hybrid vehicles. Money is temporarily lost, but the gasoline and maintenances cost savings will
compensate in a long run period of time.
Industrial ecological systems are also used because of the consumer demand.

Privacy And National Security In George Orwell s 1984
It has been more than seventy years since the release of George Orwell s 1984, a novel that imparts a
lesson on the consequences of government overreach. However, today that novel reads like an exposé
of government surveillance. Privacy and national security are two ideas competing for value on a
balance; if one is more highly valued, the other carries less weight. Government desire to bolster
national security by spying on its own citizens even the law abiding ones is what leads to the inverse
relationship between civil liberties and security. In times of a perceived threat to the nation, national
security becomes highly prized and people lose privacy. One case is terrorist attacks. 9/11 caused an
understandable kneejerk reaction in Americans to bolster protection. Some of the the measures taken
were observable, like greater security at airports, but others attempted to increase national security in a
more intrusive way. Privacy should be more highly valued than national security, and America has
reached a point where that is no longer true.
Legally speaking, the constitution and the Supreme Court prizes privacy, not surveillance in the name
of security. The Fourth Amendment gives us the right to be free of unreasonable search and seizure. In
1890, the Supreme Court decided that this amendment also implied the right to be left alone. Under
the Fourth Amendment, a warrant needs to be obtained before people can be searched, and to obtain
the warrant, evidence proving

Domestication Of Foxes Essay
Josh Gelman
10/2/12
Science Research Paper
Domestication of foxes in Russia In the world people have been domesticating animals for
amusement, comfort, and for them to be mans best friend. Now a new mans best friend comes to
thought; to domesticate foxes. In Russia a Soviet geneticist Dmitry K. Belyaev started the fast pace
domestication of foxes. Up to 50,000 foxes used through time people are getting close to the
domestication of foxes, although the process was very detailed; with genetic science, to identify how
phenotypes change from experiments, and how the fox s will change their behavior. Out of a small
town in 1954 in Siberia Dmitry K Belyaev set out to isolate the genes of dogs that were easy to train.

Their body size, fur color, fur length, and if the fur was straight or curly was all altered. Some lost
pigmentation in some areas of their body. Many physical traits changed for them by domestication.
Although some people get domestication confused, domestication is the change in a genetic level. The
actual definition is is the process whereby a population of living organisms is changed at the genetic
level, through generations of selective breeding, to accentuate traits that ultimately benefit the interests
of humans. Taming is different then domestication by a long shot. Taming means to train a wild
animal not to kill the human. Also by taming them, the fox doesn t have a strong affection and
willingness to do anything to comfort the human. The program also tests willingness to obedience. For
the owner of the fox to have a great relationship with his companion, the fox must learn simple
obedience. Simple calls will be tested on the foxes in Russia: come, sit, stay, down, and settle. All
domesticated foxes will go through the process by hand gestures. Then the scientists will take notes on
how the animals do. If the kits are raised and treated like domesticated dog puppies and pass this test,
then the scientist will concur that the genes are pertinent to domestication and are present in their

Similarities Between Chile And Uruguay
1. Introduction.
Chile and Uruguay are two of the most prosperous countries of Latin America. Both countries had an
important democratic tradition and enjoy of political Institutions that works, also they are a referent
for the rest of the countries of the region and they are well known for been the countries with the
greatest political stability in the region.
In the last Human Development Index of 2016 Chile was ranked 38 and Uruguay 54 (Human
Development Report, 2016, pág 198). These two countries were in the first three places of the Latin
America region. Another important indicator of development is the prosperity Index by the Legatum

In regards to the literature, one of the most important theories is the one that Daron Acemoglu and
James Robinson explain in their book Why Nations Fail The authors argument is that the principal
reason of one country is richer than other is because of their extractive Institutions , this mean that the
institutions works for the benefits of their political leaders instead of working for the citizens interests.
But is clear that in this case that explanation is insufficient. These four countries don`t have extractive
institutions, but their results are very different from each other.
In fact the Democracy Index of 2017, ranked Switzerland in the second place and Norway tenth. From
the other hand Uruguay was ranked 18 and Chile 26 (Democracy Index, 2017, pág 5). Therefore is
clear that these four countries have strong political

The Escalation Cycles Of Conflict
This has been an interesting week of personal reflection as I have been introduced to the concept of
conflict. It is not that I was unaware that conflict exists but I cannot say that I have given it much
thought other than how can we avoid it in our family. While reading about the escalation cycles of
conflict in the textbook I was taken back to the patterns that developed between myself and my ex
husband. I found the description of one s health often being compromised due to conflict to be an
accurate assessment of the effects long term conflict had on me personally during my first marriage. I
can see looking back now how the daily conflict regarding every conversation and decision negatively
impacted my health and left me on blood pressure

based job as a mortician and regularly had services in his home. Due to the amount of time and work
he put into his business he rarely had time for Vada. Her private life and emotions are affected by her
feeling like she killed her mom, by her dad s new girlfriend (Shelly), and raging hormones. She feels

She blames herself for her mother s death which has put a psychological toll on her developing mind.
Vada also lives in a house of death. She lives in a funeral home more or less. She is very frightened by
death and always believes she has caught something from the deceased people in her home. She
dropped her basketball in the basement with a dead body. She finally got the courage to go get it and
got locked into the basement. This fear sent her into an anxiety attack. She always thought she was
dying. She went to the doctor and would describe problems that the dead people at her house had
experienced before their death this was her hypochondriac behavior setting in. She is at the adolescent
stage of believing that bodily processes stop at death, but psychological ones still exist. She has a
better understanding of death as an adolescent than a child does due to her more developed cognitive
skills, but doesn t have a complete understanding yet. She thinks of her own death a lot, but not much
about her loved ones dying. This is why when her best friend Thomas died it hit her so traumatically.
She was in such shock and confusion. She tried to talk to him while he was in the coffin and tried to
get him up to play. It was a psychological shock. Vada also deals with not only her mother s absence,

In general, a products perceived value may be increased in one of two ways either by:
(1) Increasing the benefits that the product will deliver, or,
(2) Reducing the cost.
For consumers, the PRICE of a product is the most obvious indicator of cost hence the need to get
product pricing right.
IMPORTANCE OF PRICING
When marketers talk about what they do as part of their responsibilities for marketing products, the
tasks associated with setting price are often not at the top of the list. Marketers are much more likely
to discuss their activities related to promotion, product development, market research and other tasks
that are viewed as the more interesting and exciting parts of the job.
Yet pricing decisions can have important consequences for the marketing organization and the
attention given by the marketer to pricing is just as important as the attention given to more
recognizable marketing activities. Some reasons pricing is important include: Most Flexible
Marketing Mix Variable For marketers price is the most adjustable of all marketing decisions. Unlike
product and distribution decisions, which can take months or years to change, or some forms of
promotion which can be time consuming to

Modified Red Blood Cells Essay
As a potential tool to optimize the delivery of therapeutics via the cardiovascular system, researchers
are looking to erythrocytes as an abundant and versatile drug delivery platform. There seems to be a
consensus in the biomedical community that modified red blood cells (RBCs) have great potential to
add to the safety, effectiveness, and specificity of therapeutics and other interventions. RBCs have
already been shown to interact with more than fifty known drugs that have been approved by the
FDA, and may be unintentionally serving as a natural compartment that affects; biodistribution,
metabolism, and the pharmacokinetics of many commonly prescribed medications. As seen in figure
1, RBCs are enucleated, biconcave discs that are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A major downside to this method is a lack of therapeutic isolation from the body which makes this
approach a poor choice for targeted delivery. Another complication with this method is that the
coupled therapeutic might cause an unintended immune response. The major benefit associated with
coupling therapeutics to the surface of RBCs is that it is possible to perform the procedure in the
patient s cardiovascular system. Once injected, the therapeutics with conjugated RBC targeting
ligands will form covalent chemical cross linkers with a receptor on the extracellular surface of the
RBC. In doing so, the trouble of having to extract RBCs, treat them, and ultimately reintroduce them
back into the patient s cardiovascular system is avoided. Also, by coupling the therapeutics to the
RBCs membrane, this approach avoids the damage that can occur during the encapsulation method
which will be discussed next. (Muzykantov)
The alternative method of loading RBCs, involves encapsulating the therapeutics inside the cell.
While there are multiple methods for coaxing the cell to uptake a therapeutic, there appears to be a
consensus that osmosis driven entrapment is the method that does the least amount of damage to the
cell membrane. This method takes advantage of an interesting biochemical feature of red blood cells
and can be viewed in figure 2. When RBCs are put in a hypotonic solution

Common Core State Standards Analysis
The Common Core State Standards provide clear and consistent learning goals to help prepare
students for college, career, and life, these standards clearly show what students are likely to learn at
each grade level, so that every parent and teacher can comprehend and provide support for the
students learning. It is stated that, these standards set grade specific goals, they do not express how the
standards should be taught or which resources should be used to support students . Many states and
local districts identify that there will need to be a variety of backings in place to confirm that all
students, (including those with special needs and English language learners), can master the standards

One of the most imperative objectives of the Common Core State Standards is that it gives the needed

A Raisin Of The Sun By Lorraine Hansberry
Lorraine Hansberry, a female playwright and black activist, spent almost all of her life dealing with
American racism, poverty, and lack of social mobility. As a person who witnessed the daily struggles
of African Americans, Hansberry wanted to expose the hypocrisy in the idea that America was the
land of equal opportunity. As a result, in 1959, Hansberry wrote the play, A Raisin in the Sun, which
details the Youngers, an African American family, who experienced racism, poverty, and the lack of
social mobility during the 1950s in Chicago s Southside. Throughout the play, the Younger family
members try to make their respective dreams come true and try to deal with the problems that
surround them. However, the process of one family member achieving his or her own dream stifles
another family member s respective dream. Hansberry uses the Younger family characters to argue
that America is not a land of equal opportunity due to racism, poverty, and the lack of social mobility
and to make American society aware of the disadvantages that African Americans are faced with.
Hansberry uses Walter Younger, an African American male character who aspires to have a better
socioeconomic position in the United States, to reveal the economic and social inequities African
Americans face. During the play, Walter Younger states that he is tired of everything [...] [and] the way

The World Intellectual Property Organization Essay
Intellectual property is an asset to an individual or a business. Even though intellectual property is
intangible, it is very important to protect it. Protection of intellectual property can be one of the most
important business decisions one can make.
The World Intellectual Property Organization (n.d.) states intellectual property refers to creations of
the mind. This can include inventions but also includes literary and artistic works, as well as symbols,
names and images used in commerce. The World Property Organization (n.d.) categorizes intellectual
property into two categories, which are industrial property and copyright. Industrial property includes
trademarks, patents for inventions, and industrial designs and geographical indications. Copyright
includes music, films, literary and artistic works (World Intellectual Property Organization, n.d.).
The World Intellectual Property Organization (n.d.) helps one understand the importance of protecting
intellectual property. They have spelled out several reasons of this importance including inventing new
works in technology and culture, which allows progress to be made that, can be utilized worldwide. In
addition, the legal protection of intellectual property encourages the commitment of additional
resources for further modernization. Finally, promoting and protecting intellectual property
encourages economic growth. It creates new jobs and industries. Protecting intellectual property also

Esters Lab
Flavor Lab
Leslie Perez
FST 426L.1
Purpose
The objective of this experiment is to prepare and identify several types of esters by the process of
dehydration synthesis using an alcohol with an acid.
Introduction
The process by which esters are formed is a reversible reaction called esterification. They are formed
when alcohols react with carboxylic acids in the presence of hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. This
reaction is known as a condensation reaction. In the reaction above, the hydroxyl group ( OH) in the
carboxylic acid is replaced by the alkoxy group ( R*O) of the alcohol yielding an ester and water.
Esters are used as constituents of perfumes, cosmetics, and surfactants, just to mention a few
examples. In addition to this they are used in the food industry for flavoring of sweet and margarine.

Table 1 shows the different alcohols and acids used for the production of esters. The name of the esters
is shown in the last column of this table as well as how the team member identified the odors of the
ester produced. Table 2 shows the results for all 5 groups in the class. Most of the esters produced in
this laboratory experiment were easily identified as specific fragances such as banana, wintergreen,
and menthol. It is shown in the table, that banana was the most identified one followed by tube M and
tube A. The rest of the esters, E and B, had more variability in the identification of esters while C was
identified as mouthwash, which can be associated to the menthol flavor and odor. Ester in tube B was
the hardest to be identified according to Table 2, since it had 4 different associated smells to it.
Students identified one of the odors as expo marker which can be due to experimental error in which
the ester did not fully react and the solution smelled more like alcohol (ethanol or isopropanol), which
are ingredients that most dry erase markers such as the brand Expo

The Sonnets Of The Sonnet In The 17th Century
Prior to the 17th century, poetry was not only predominantly written by males, but also catered to their
ideas, interests, and views. During this time, women were limited in their expression and were
silenced to anything other than their household duties. Among this era, Elizabeth Barrett was born in
1806 to a family of great wealth in Durham, England. Under a very traditional, strict household, she
was the eldest of 12 children. Her father, Edward, was very controlling and forbid all of his daughters
from marrying. Although, he did encourage highly encourage their studies. Elizabeth began to explore
beyond her traditional studies and took an interest in poetry, literature, and various languages. At a
very young age, she could read the works of many well known scholars. Unfortunately, Elizabeth
became very ill, which in turn affected not only her well being but over overall mindset. Although her
circumstances grew worse, she was able to spend more time on her studies. Elizabeth later became a
very influential poet, writing the Sonnets of the Portuguese, challenging the traditional male
dominance in writing through her new view, writing style, and the concept of love.
With Elizabeth s gloomy outlook on life, and the overbearing traditional sense of love from her father,
she was certain that she would never find true love or even marry. However, the more she began to
write the more attention she received, particularly from one individual writer, Robert Browning. Later

Determinism And Free Will
Determinists believe that everything that occurs in the world follows both from the laws of nature and
also the prior state of the universe. As a result, they further believe that our actions are predetermined.
Many philosophers believe this it offers a simple justification as to why people commit such actions
and, even more broad, why history precedes in the way that it does.
As an incompatibilist, I believe that determinism rules out the possibility of human freedom.
Determinism relies on a cause and effect relationship between the current state and the past. it uses
empirical notions that past action, or experience, combines with natural law to basically set out our
actions. I cannot see how a philosophy that suggests this cause and effect ... Show more content on

Peter van Inwagen, a proponent of libertarianism, argues in his piece Freedom of the Will that freedom
and a society dictated. Libertarians often rationalize that one must believe that humans have free will
so that we as a society are able to hold people accountable for their actions. Yet, as a hard determinist,
I would say that yes we do exist in a cause and effect world in which actions are predetermined; yet,
we are the means of those actions. van Inwagen also rejects determinism because he believes in the
possibility of one having multiple futures which determinism does not allow for. Most importantly, he
rejects determinism s central idea, the causality relationship, in favor of a world in which humans can
choose their own paths. This idea of choice is not sound as actions that one has no control over before
birth indirectly influence their decision making, rationalizing, and so forth. For instance, people born
into households with lower incomes tend to go to lower performing schools. These lower performing
schools impact their ideas about society, their role in society, and in a broader view, the world. The
choices they make were already decided before they were even born from the socioeconomic
conditions and genetic history since the beginning of time that had preceded the birth. Unknowingly,
the person makes choices, which are not really their own, based off of

The History Of Deism
Most people have either never heard of Deism or consider it to be of historical interest only. Its roots
can be traced to ancient Greece and it flourished for a while in the eighteenth century in Britain and
America, a product of the Enlightenment. Many of America s founding fathers Thomas Jefferson,
Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, John Adams, James Madison and the British radical Thomas
Paine were Deists.
Deism was regarded by those who espoused it, to be a personal philosophy.
Deists were not proselytizers striving to win converts which proved to be its weakness. While
evangelical religion brought large numbers into its pews throughout the nineteenth century, Deism
dwindled.
Yet despite reports to the contrary it did not disappear. Today, in the USA, Deism is resurgent and
growing, this has largely been due to the internet allowing widespread presentation and discussion of
Deist ideas. This at a time when there has been a search for alternatives to evangelical religion and it s
often equally fundamentalist counterpart, militant atheism. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Yet there may well be a large number of Deists who simply don t realise that is what they are. It is not

something beyond what we can see and so on. The following bullet points are an attempt to give some
definition to Deism. They are most certainly NOT a creed demanding adherence.

personal experience, reason leads to a belief in God.

The Canterbury Tales And The Pardoner s Tale
In the late 1300s Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales, a story which follows the religious
journey of twenty nine people, who represent many aspects of Medieval society, to the Canterbury
Cathedral in southeast England. While on the pilgrimage the host of the tavern, where all the pilgrims
meet, suggests that the pilgrims each tell a story for the group s entertainment. Chaucer intended for
all the voyagers to tell two stories, but he unfortunately died before he could finish the book and only
got to write one story apiece. However, the goal of the storytelling contest is to tell the most moral
story possible, and the one who wins receives a free meal, which the rest of the pilgrims will pay for.
Although some of the other stories have good moral messages, The Pardoner s Tale and The Wife of
Bath s Tale are on different ends of the moral spectrum. The Pardoner s Tale focuses on a pardoner
who preaches against greed. While The Wife of Bath s Tale exemplifies what all women want in their
relationships: power. Although both The Pardoner s Tale and The Wife of Bath s Tale demonstrate the
value of the opinion of elders, the stories differ in their moral values and their storyteller s values. In
The Pardoner s Tale a group of revelrous men seek revenge after Death kills their friend. While on the
hunt for Death, the men find an old man, who has found Death, but Death has not taken the man yet.

Symptoms And Treatment Of Respiratory Diseases
Introduction of the respiratory system in health and disease
The module introduced knowledge on the respiratory anatomy and physiology, and how it relates to
respiratory diseases. In addition, it induced array of symptoms and signs of respiratory diseases, and
their pathogenesis and aetiology. Respiratory diseases are an epidemic in developing countries, with
high mortality rates such as tuberculosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. it s important for
biomedical scientists, to understand the symptoms and treatment strategies. The lecture focused on
diagnostic methods such as lung function testing, and its measurements. The respiratory system is a
collective group of organs that facilitate oxygenated processes and removal of carbon dioxide as by
product via the blood. Principle muscle mechanics of breathing and physiology of gas exchange was
revision for me (expiration and inspiration) as well as the conducting airway systems. Respiratory
system is indulged in many homeostatic processes like gas exchange and PH maintenance. Cells
require oxygen for energy production in the form of ATP to carry out the life processes.
What was new to me was knowing that the medulla is the respiratory control centre, and that an array
of receptors such as chemoreceptor s, control and influence respiration by detecting changes of carbon
dioxide concentrations in the blood an monitoring of blood gas levels. Another important point was
the transport mechanisms of Oxygen and carbon

states that all of his paintings are self portraits of some aspect of himself. His work takes on a

Santo Domingo Pueblo. He had found a buffalo dancer sitting on the ground. Scholder painted him
with a horned headdress, beads around his neck, and an ice cream in his hands. Instead of painting the
man with the traditional attire, Scholder painted him as he saw him. I think that that s why this
painting is quintessentially Scholder, because he picked up on the Indian as mythical being and Indian
as ice cream cone eater, Scholder s second wife, Romona Scholder states when speaking about the
piece. The painting is a great example of expressionist and pop art technique. The painting is clearly
an expressionist piece as it is presented through a solely subjective perspective, altering it radically for
emotional effect that arouse emotion and ideas. It s also easy to see Scholder s pop artist influence as it
does not portray a traditional theme, rather celebrating people of everyday life. The use of color and
line within the piece directs the viewer s eye to the buffalo dancer, emphasizing his importance to the
overall meaning. Scholder s use of subtle Native American aspects adds a balance to the piece that
effectively challenges pre conceived stereotypes. This can be seen through the traditional beads and
headdress the man is wearing, however, Scholder challenges stereotypes of Native Americans with the

The Criminalization of the Mentally Ill Essay
Problem Analysis: The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world and of that over
sixty percent of jail inmates reported having a mental health issue and 316,000 of them are severely
mentally ill (Raphael Stoll, 2013). Correctional facilities in the United States have become the primary
mental health institutions today (Adams Ferrandino, 2008). This imprisonment of the mentally ill in
the United States has increased the incarceration rate and has left those individuals medically
untreated and emotionally unstable while in jail and after being released. Better housing facilities,
medical treatment and psychiatric counseling can be helpful in alleviating their illness as well as upon
their release. This paper will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The deinstitutionalization of state mental hospitals has left many individuals untreated and in the
community where there come under police scrutiny due to their odd behavior, that is a manifestation
of their illness. Majority of mentally ill offenders have not committed a serious crime and are
subjected to inappropriate arrest and incarceration (Soderstrom, 2008). This new policy has become
quite a concern to the fact that the correctional environment has proven to show no positive results in
the mental health of the offender during their time of incarceration or upon their release date and
thereafter (Soderstrom, 2008). Another major factor is the lack of medical services in the prisons and
jails. Many of the mentally ill are retained in the criminal justice system without the appropriate
treatment needed because of the lack of trained staff in the mental illness field (Markowitz, 2011).
There is usually limited access to treatment programs while incarcerated and a high risk of
decomposition and deterioration (Rock, 2001). In a Frontline documentary on mental illness
researchers estimated that about two thirds of the inmates in state facilities who did receive counseling
or psychotropic drugs did not necessarily specialize in providing mental health services; leaving us to

An exemplary example of such a proponent is Eric Roberts, the uncredentialed author of the article Violent Video Games Produce Violent Behavior in Our Nation s Youth and Should Be Banned . In the latter half of his first argument, Roberts boldly claims Violent video games equate to violent behavior, especially in children whose brains are not fully formed yet and a game rated MA (Mature) doesn t stop a kid from playing it, yet there is utterly no evidence supporting these poor claims. In reality, according to the Entertainment Software Rating Board s official website, a majority of parents check the video game rating before purchasing it for their child (ESRB). Robert draws a hasty generalization in hopes that readers will gloss over such details and ignorantly agree with Robert s meaningless and false claims. A vast majority of Robert s argument is based around women being portrayed as helpless victims or sexual objects. Drawing on sympathetic feelings, Robert equates violent video games to sexual ones and generalizes them as a whole. While attempting to indirectly attack violent video games, he utilizes the straw man fallacy to prey on a vaguely associated, weaker target: sexual video games. He criticizes these sexual games to coerce compassionate support, a mere gaudy bauble for naive readers to blindly listen to Robert s argument. In fact, Roberts gives absolutely no evidence to state any link between violent and sexual video games, much less a link between how sexual video games translate into sexist or aggressive behavior in the modern world. Like art, fashion is a material record of the ideals that swayed the nations at the time of their creation. Through examining the styles, and tastes of a particular era, we can realize where the interests and priorities of a time lie. As Frank Parsons wrote in his 1920 study, The Psychology of Dress, There is surly no better field in which to trace the devious paths of human thought than in that of clothes, where man has ever given free play to self expression, in a way which, thought not always a credit to his intelligence, is yet quite true to his innermost self, whether he will acknowledge it or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Clothing expression in medieval Europe, like all other forms of artistic expression at this time, found it s biggest outlet in the ecclesiastical field, as this was where all the money was to be found. The churches employed all the best builders and craftsmen in creating their great cathedrals, and art works. In clothing, the church dictated what sorts of materials were made, and brought into the area, what colors were in use, and what styles were used, influencing the secular as well as ecclesiastical dress. In the feudal system only great Barons and their families wore fine cloths, as clothing was a symbol of rank and importance. Each family made their own clothes, so fashion was very individualistic in style, and each family had their own characteristics. With an increase of wealth in the area, and the beginning of the crusades, new elaborate styles were introduced into the scene. Fashions became strange, and grotesque in nature reflecting the constant struggles and wars of the time, as fantasy and the grotesque generally influence social costumes accompanying times of war. Women in their headgear actually wore huge horns, like an ox, that towered above them and supported a veil, and men s shoes were peaked and extended six inches in front of them for common men, and a foot for gentlemen, and two feet for noblemen. According to Habitat.org, this issue affects between 1.6 million to close to 3 million people within the United States. The issue is growing throughout the world, but what is the root cause? Privacy And National Security In George Orwell s 1984 It has been more than seventy years since the release of George Orwell s 1984, a novel that imparts a lesson on the consequences of government overreach. However, today that novel reads like an exposé of government surveillance. Privacy and national security are two ideas competing for value on a balance; if one is more highly valued, the other carries less weight. Government desire to bolster national security by spying on its own citizens even the law abiding ones is what leads to the inverse relationship between civil liberties and security. In times of a perceived threat to the nation, national security becomes highly prized and people lose privacy. One case is terrorist attacks. 9/11 caused an understandable kneejerk reaction in Americans to bolster protection. Some of the the measures taken were observable, like greater security at airports, but others attempted to increase national security in a more intrusive way. Privacy should be more highly valued than national security, and America has reached a point where that is no longer true. Legally speaking, the constitution and the Supreme Court prizes privacy, not surveillance in the name of security. The Fourth Amendment gives us the right to be free of unreasonable search and seizure. In 1890, the Supreme Court decided that this amendment also implied the right to be left alone. There seems to be a consensus in the biomedical community that modified red blood cells (RBCs) have great potential to add to the safety, effectiveness, and specificity of therapeutics and other interventions. RBCs have already been shown to interact with more than fifty known drugs that have been approved by the FDA, and may be unintentionally serving as a natural compartment that affects; biodistribution, metabolism, and the pharmacokinetics of many commonly prescribed medications. As seen in figure 1, RBCs are enucleated, biconcave discs that are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A major downside to this method is a lack of therapeutic isolation from the body which makes this approach a poor choice for targeted delivery. Another complication with this method is that the coupled therapeutic might cause an unintended immune response. The major benefit associated with coupling therapeutics to the surface of RBCs is that it is possible to perform the procedure in the patient s cardiovascular system. Once injected, the therapeutics with conjugated RBC targeting ligands will form covalent chemical cross linkers with a receptor on the extracellular surface of the RBC. In doing so, the trouble of having to extract RBCs, treat them, and ultimately reintroduce them back into the patient s cardiovascular system is avoided. Also, by coupling the therapeutics to the RBCs membrane, this approach avoids the damage that can occur during the encapsulation method which will be discussed next. (Muzykantov) The alternative method of loading RBCs, involves encapsulating the therapeutics inside the cell. While there are multiple methods for coaxing the cell to uptake a therapeutic, there appears to be a consensus that osmosis driven entrapment is the method that does the least amount of damage to the cell membrane. This method takes advantage of an interesting biochemical feature of red blood cells and can be viewed in figure 2. When RBCs are put in a hypotonic solution ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. A Raisin Of The Sun By Lorraine Hansberry Lorraine Hansberry, a female playwright and black activist, spent almost all of her life dealing with American racism, poverty, and lack of social mobility. As a person who witnessed the daily struggles of African Americans, Hansberry wanted to expose the hypocrisy in the idea that America was the land of equal opportunity. As a result, in 1959, Hansberry wrote the play, A Raisin in the Sun, which details the Youngers, an African American family, who experienced racism, poverty, and the lack of social mobility during the 1950s in Chicago s Southside. Throughout the play, the Younger family members try to make their respective dreams come true and try to deal with the problems that surround them. However, the process of one family member achieving his or her own dream stifles another family member s respective dream. Hansberry uses the Younger family characters to argue that America is not a land of equal opportunity due to racism, poverty, and the lack of social mobility and to make American society aware of the disadvantages that African Americans are faced with. Hansberry uses Walter Younger, an African American male character who aspires to have a better socioeconomic position in the United States, to reveal the economic and social inequities African Americans face. During the play, Walter Younger states that he is tired of everything [...] [and] the way [they] live (Hansberry 32) because he doesn t have a career to help him move up in society and all he can give is ... • 34. Esters Lab Flavor Lab Leslie Perez FST 426L.1 Purpose The objective of this experiment is to prepare and identify several types of esters by the process of dehydration synthesis using an alcohol with an acid. Introduction The process by which esters are formed is a reversible reaction called esterification. They are formed when alcohols react with carboxylic acids in the presence of hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. This reaction is known as a condensation reaction. In the reaction above, the hydroxyl group ( OH) in the carboxylic acid is replaced by the alkoxy group ( R*O) of the alcohol yielding an ester and water. Esters are used as constituents of perfumes, cosmetics, and surfactants, just to mention a few examples. In addition to this they are used in the food industry for flavoring of sweet and margarine. In the article, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Table 1 shows the different alcohols and acids used for the production of esters. The name of the esters is shown in the last column of this table as well as how the team member identified the odors of the ester produced. Table 2 shows the results for all 5 groups in the class. Most of the esters produced in this laboratory experiment were easily identified as specific fragances such as banana, wintergreen, and menthol. It is shown in the table, that banana was the most identified one followed by tube M and tube A. The rest of the esters, E and B, had more variability in the identification of esters while C was identified as mouthwash, which can be associated to the menthol flavor and odor. Ester in tube B was the hardest to be identified according to Table 2, since it had 4 different associated smells to it. Students identified one of the odors as expo marker which can be due to experimental error in which the ester did not fully react and the solution smelled more like alcohol (ethanol or isopropanol), which are ingredients that most dry erase markers such as the brand Expo ... • 35. The Sonnets Of The Sonnet In The 17th Century Prior to the 17th century, poetry was not only predominantly written by males, but also catered to their ideas, interests, and views. During this time, women were limited in their expression and were silenced to anything other than their household duties. Among this era, Elizabeth Barrett was born in 1806 to a family of great wealth in Durham, England. Under a very traditional, strict household, she was the eldest of 12 children. Her father, Edward, was very controlling and forbid all of his daughters from marrying. Although, he did encourage highly encourage their studies. Elizabeth began to explore beyond her traditional studies and took an interest in poetry, literature, and various languages. At a very young age, she could read the works of many well known scholars. Unfortunately, Elizabeth became very ill, which in turn affected not only her well being but over overall mindset. Although her circumstances grew worse, she was able to spend more time on her studies. Elizabeth later became a very influential poet, writing the Sonnets of the Portuguese, challenging the traditional male dominance in writing through her new view, writing style, and the concept of love. As a result, they further believe that our actions are predetermined. Many philosophers believe this it offers a simple justification as to why people commit such actions and, even more broad, why history precedes in the way that it does. As an incompatibilist, I believe that determinism rules out the possibility of human freedom. Determinism relies on a cause and effect relationship between the current state and the past. it uses empirical notions that past action, or experience, combines with natural law to basically set out our actions. Peter van Inwagen, a proponent of libertarianism, argues in his piece Freedom of the Will that freedom and a society dictated. Libertarians often rationalize that one must believe that humans have free will so that we as a society are able to hold people accountable for their actions. Yet, as a hard determinist, I would say that yes we do exist in a cause and effect world in which actions are predetermined; yet, we are the means of those actions. van Inwagen also rejects determinism because he believes in the possibility of one having multiple futures which determinism does not allow for. Most importantly, he rejects determinism s central idea, the causality relationship, in favor of a world in which humans can choose their own paths. This idea of choice is not sound as actions that one has no control over before birth indirectly influence their decision making, rationalizing, and so forth. For instance, people born into households with lower incomes tend to go to lower performing schools. These lower performing schools impact their ideas about society, their role in society, and in a broader view, the world. The choices they make were already decided before they were even born from the socioeconomic conditions and genetic history since the beginning of time that had preceded the birth. Unknowingly, the person makes choices, which are not really their own, based off of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The History Of Deism Most people have either never heard of Deism or consider it to be of historical interest only. Its roots can be traced to ancient Greece and it flourished for a while in the eighteenth century in Britain and America, a product of the Enlightenment. Many of America s founding fathers Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, John Adams, James Madison and the British radical Thomas Paine were Deists. Deism was regarded by those who espoused it, to be a personal philosophy. Deists were not proselytizers striving to win converts which proved to be its weakness. While evangelical religion brought large numbers into its pews throughout the nineteenth century, Deism dwindled. Yet despite reports to the contrary it did not disappear. Today, in the USA, Deism is resurgent and growing, this has largely been due to the internet allowing widespread presentation and discussion of Deist ideas. • 38. The Canterbury Tales And The Pardoner s Tale In the late 1300s Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales, a story which follows the religious journey of twenty nine people, who represent many aspects of Medieval society, to the Canterbury Cathedral in southeast England. While on the pilgrimage the host of the tavern, where all the pilgrims meet, suggests that the pilgrims each tell a story for the group s entertainment. Chaucer intended for all the voyagers to tell two stories, but he unfortunately died before he could finish the book and only got to write one story apiece. However, the goal of the storytelling contest is to tell the most moral story possible, and the one who wins receives a free meal, which the rest of the pilgrims will pay for. Although some of the other stories have good moral messages, The Pardoner s Tale and The Wife of Bath s Tale are on different ends of the moral spectrum. The Pardoner s Tale focuses on a pardoner who preaches against greed. While The Wife of Bath s Tale exemplifies what all women want in their relationships: power. Although both The Pardoner s Tale and The Wife of Bath s Tale demonstrate the value of the opinion of elders, the stories differ in their moral values and their storyteller s values. In The Pardoner s Tale a group of revelrous men seek revenge after Death kills their friend. Symptoms And Treatment Of Respiratory Diseases Introduction of the respiratory system in health and disease The module introduced knowledge on the respiratory anatomy and physiology, and how it relates to respiratory diseases. In addition, it induced array of symptoms and signs of respiratory diseases, and their pathogenesis and aetiology. Respiratory diseases are an epidemic in developing countries, with high mortality rates such as tuberculosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. it s important for biomedical scientists, to understand the symptoms and treatment strategies. The lecture focused on diagnostic methods such as lung function testing, and its measurements. Principle muscle mechanics of breathing and physiology of gas exchange was revision for me (expiration and inspiration) as well as the conducting airway systems. Respiratory system is indulged in many homeostatic processes like gas exchange and PH maintenance. Cells require oxygen for energy production in the form of ATP to carry out the life processes. What was new to me was knowing that the medulla is the respiratory control centre, and that an array of receptors such as chemoreceptor s, control and influence respiration by detecting changes of carbon dioxide concentrations in the blood an monitoring of blood gas levels. He had found a buffalo dancer sitting on the ground. Scholder painted him with a horned headdress, beads around his neck, and an ice cream in his hands. Instead of painting the man with the traditional attire, Scholder painted him as he saw him. I think that that s why this painting is quintessentially Scholder, because he picked up on the Indian as mythical being and Indian as ice cream cone eater, Scholder s second wife, Romona Scholder states when speaking about the piece. The painting is a great example of expressionist and pop art technique. The painting is clearly an expressionist piece as it is presented through a solely subjective perspective, altering it radically for emotional effect that arouse emotion and ideas. It s also easy to see Scholder s pop artist influence as it does not portray a traditional theme, rather celebrating people of everyday life. The use of color and line within the piece directs the viewer s eye to the buffalo dancer, emphasizing his importance to the overall meaning. Scholder s use of subtle Native American aspects adds a balance to the piece that effectively challenges pre conceived stereotypes. This can be seen through the traditional beads and headdress the man is wearing, however, Scholder challenges stereotypes of Native Americans with the addition of an ice cream cone. Majority of mentally ill offenders have not committed a serious crime and are subjected to inappropriate arrest and incarceration (Soderstrom, 2008). This new policy has become quite a concern to the fact that the correctional environment has proven to show no positive results in the mental health of the offender during their time of incarceration or upon their release date and thereafter (Soderstrom, 2008). Another major factor is the lack of medical services in the prisons and jails. Many of the mentally ill are retained in the criminal justice system without the appropriate treatment needed because of the lack of trained staff in the mental illness field (Markowitz, 2011). There is usually limited access to treatment programs while incarcerated and a high risk of decomposition and deterioration (Rock, 2001).
