Digital Documents as a Paper Simulator?
Vannevar Bush
Ted Nelson
Most people don't understand the logic of the
concept: "What You See Is What You Get" is
based on printing the document out ("get"
means "get WHEN YOU PRINT IT OUT"). And that
means a metaphysical shift: a document can
only consist of what can be printed! [...] No
overlays [...] â PAPER UNDER GLASS.
When data of any sort are placed in storage,
they are filed alphabetically or numerically,
and information is found (when it is) by
tracing it down from subclass to subclass. It
can be in only one place, unless duplicates
are used [...] The human mind does not work
that way. It operates by association.

Radical Atoms (Ishii et al., 2012)
ī§ Vision taking a leap beyond Tangible Bits
ī§ assuming a hypothetical generation of materials that can
dynamically change their form and appearance
ī§ vision-driven design research
ī§ Radical Atoms is
ī§ a computationally transformable and reconfigurable material that
is bidirectionally coupled with an underlying digital model (bits)
- changes to digital model are reflected in physical representation and vice versa
ī§ a future material that can transform its shape, conform to
constraints and inform the users of its affordances
ī§ a vision for the future of human-material interaction and Material
User Interfaces (MUIs) in which all digital information has a
physical manifestation so that we can directly interact with it

Data Physicalisation (Jansen et al., 2015)
ī§ Physical objects used for output
ī§ often static encoding of digital
information
ī§ physical visualisations can outperform
their virtual counterparts
ī§ How can we achieve dynamic data
physicalisation with dynamic affordances
ī§ e.g. 3D visualisation with additional dimensions represented
by physical variables such as temperature, texture, weight or
plasticity
ī§ TRANSFORM is one possible approach; tangible holograms
(TangHo) is another experimental mobile solution
- can be used for multidimensional collaborative exploration and analysis of
big data sets

ī§ Inspired by research agenda of Jansen et al.
ī§ Understanding the design space
ī§ how do users map data to physicalisations
ī§ Understanding the perceptual effectiveness

variable can convey?
