Mail Attender Attachment Archiving vs.
Domino DAOS

Introduction:
At Sherpa Software, we’re often asked how Mail Attender’s Attachment Archiving feature compares to DAOS,
which can be obtained inherently within IBM Domino. While DAOS does a good job, it comes down to the question;
“What is your main goal for this feature?” Evaluating each will allow you to see how they work and what they do and
do not provide. While you may not be inclined to spend the time to evaluate both, or you already implemented
DAOS into your environment and want to learn how Mail Attender can compliment it, you can get a quick peek into
additional options. What this article won’t do is tell you how to install it and set it up. You can find more information
on that in this DAOS Quick Start Guide. This article is designed to answer that first question that comes up.

What each product does:
DAOS: Stores attachments in a single store per server. These are stored as messages reach the router, before the
user ever sees them in their mail file.

Mail Attender: Stores attachments in a single .nsf store in either a centralized or distributed model (the choice is
that of the administrator). Mail Attender processes the attachments after they are in the mail file and process them
by age, size or name.

What you see:
So now that you know what they do (essentially the same thing), what about your access as a Domino
administrator? What can you see and know about what is in the store? This is also a big advantage to Mail
Attender’s Attachment Store. Let’s take a look.

DAOS Summary:

                                                                                                             Page |2

Domino DAOS

Mail Attender Summary:

As you can see, there is a much better visual of what’s in the store AND you can open each store if needed. You
also have an easy to see view of the total size and number of attachments per server (regardless if you choose the
central or distributed method).

Additional Considerations:
Centrally Stored vs. Distributed

This is a point of debate on what is the best option and how it should work. Many believe that DAOS being a
distributed option is the best way. In a large, world-wide distributed environment, it would make sense to have one
store per server. However, what about the smaller locations that are just a handful of servers connected via a high-
speed WAN? Why not offer a centrally stored attachment and take up even less space? This is one of the biggest
requests Sherpa gets from our customers. No matter what side of the fence you are on, Mail Attender offers both
methods and lets you choose the best setup for your environment.

                                                                                                         Page |3

Attachment Review

Another feature that customers love about Mail Attender’s Attachment store is that specific users can have full
access to the data. This allows key employees from your Legal or Human Resources department the ability to
quickly review what type of attachments users are sending and receiving. It also allows them to easily manage and
deal with any inappropriate or potentially damaging attachments. With DAOS, you would have to search the mail
files individually to see what users are storing.

Another key request we get is when a user accidentally sent out the wrong attachment to a group of users. This
could be an attachment that contains confidential information or possibly non-business appropriate material. Being
able to see the data in the archive allows for quick, easy removal of the damaging attachment.

As you can see, there are many advantages to using Mail Attender Attachment Archive store. Only you can decide
what works best for your environment and what will fit your needs better. If you have any questions, feel free to
leave us a comment, or, you can try a free trial of Mail Attender for Notes.
