HandsOn Greater Huntsville, formerly known as The Volunteer Center
of Madison County, is the premier connection between volunteers and
community needs. We partner with the community to mobilize volunteers
and to provide solutions to local challenges. But it is you, the individual
volunteer, who makes HandsOn key to this community. We believe that
only people can solve community problems, and we would like to challenge
you to help us help our community.
HandsOn Greater Huntsville was created in 1969 as a clearinghouse to
link new volunteers with non-profit organizations. We build the capacity of
partner agencies – most of the non-profit agencies in our community
- to involve and manage volunteers and to address local needs
through volunteering.
HandsOn Greater Huntsville is the only agency in Madison County that
acts as a clearinghouse for ALL volunteer services to over 175 non-
profit agencies. Over the past year, HandsOn Greater Huntsville has
facilitated over 3,000 opportunities for volunteers to serve. We have
tripled our volunteer database from 1,500 to over 4,500 registered skilled/
unskilled volunteers who support the tutoring, translating, business and
workplace volunteering and overall betterment of Madison County. The
national average value for a volunteer, based on research by the Points
of Light Institute, is $21.44/hour in 2009. Based on that figure, HandsOn
Greater Huntsville provided our community with over $2.4 million in
volunteer placements last year. Your gift of time, talent and treasure helps
strengthen our community and we thank you.
HandsOn Greater Huntsville offers online registration and volunteer
opportunities at www.volunteerhsv.org. Our toll free number is 1-877-567-
8723. We provide customized, done-in-a-day projects for individuals and
for businesses who promote employee volunteerism. Make it part of your
Business Plan to be a member of HandsOn Business Volunteer Council.
Please join us. We know we can provide an opportunity for you to better
our community.

About Us
About Us is really About YOU! HandsOn Network Inspires, Equips
and Mobilizes People to Take Action that Changes the World.
Through our network of more than 250 HandsOn Action Centers, you
can find volunteer projects and programs that align your passion with
real needs in your local community. You can get trained to become a
volunteer leader, or you can use your professional skills to get a local
non-profit on track. The options are endless.
Our Action Centers are in more than 250 communities across the
country and 11 international locations. They reach 83% of the
population, facilitating more than 30,000 projects a month. Our
network also includes more than 70,000 nonprofit, faith, school
and community-based organizations. There truly is something for
everyone. If you don’t see something you like, don’t worry - your local
Action Center will help you design, develop and manage a project
that really gets your blood pumping!
In 2007 alone, HandsOn volunteers delivered more than 30 million
hours of service! The call to engage in your community is stronger
than ever. Don’t miss out on your opportunity to Be The Change. We
are here to help!
HandsOn Network is the leading business unit within the Points
of Light Institute portfolio and is the activating arm. HandsOn
Network equips, mobilizes and inspires people to take action that
changes the world. At the center of the network are our more than
250 affiliates serving 83% of the American population and 12
international communities. It is also a “network of networks” that
includes our partnering nonprofits, government agencies, faith-based
organizations, and companies seeking to engage in service.
The strategy of HandsOn Network is to build a “network of networks”
with diverse connection points for citizen action, offering many ways
for people to align their interests with community needs. Anchored
by our 250 linked HandsOn Action Centers, this strategy includes
creating a new national culture of service through public policy,
advocacy, thought leadership and utilization of media and 21st
century social networking technology.
The Network also includes an expanded base of thousands
of corporate partners, nonprofit, community, faith-based and
government organizations. HandsOn Network is the activating,
volunteer-focused arm of Points of Light Institute and is the leading
business unit.

Hands On Handbook 2009

  • 1.
  • 2.
  • 3. HandsOn Greater Huntsville, formerly known as The Volunteer Center of Madison County, is the premier connection between volunteers and community needs. We partner with the community to mobilize volunteers and to provide solutions to local challenges. But it is you, the individual volunteer, who makes HandsOn key to this community. We believe that only people can solve community problems, and we would like to challenge you to help us help our community. HandsOn Greater Huntsville was created in 1969 as a clearinghouse to link new volunteers with non-profit organizations. We build the capacity of partner agencies – most of the non-profit agencies in our community - to involve and manage volunteers and to address local needs through volunteering. HandsOn Greater Huntsville is the only agency in Madison County that acts as a clearinghouse for ALL volunteer services to over 175 non- profit agencies. Over the past year, HandsOn Greater Huntsville has facilitated over 3,000 opportunities for volunteers to serve. We have tripled our volunteer database from 1,500 to over 4,500 registered skilled/ unskilled volunteers who support the tutoring, translating, business and workplace volunteering and overall betterment of Madison County. The national average value for a volunteer, based on research by the Points of Light Institute, is $21.44/hour in 2009. Based on that figure, HandsOn Greater Huntsville provided our community with over $2.4 million in volunteer placements last year. Your gift of time, talent and treasure helps strengthen our community and we thank you. HandsOn Greater Huntsville offers online registration and volunteer opportunities at www.volunteerhsv.org. Our toll free number is 1-877-567- 8723. We provide customized, done-in-a-day projects for individuals and for businesses who promote employee volunteerism. Make it part of your Business Plan to be a member of HandsOn Business Volunteer Council. Please join us. We know we can provide an opportunity for you to better our community. Sheila McFerran President/CEO HandsOn Greater Huntsville

We are here to help! HandsOn Network is the leading business unit within the Points of Light Institute portfolio and is the activating arm. HandsOn Network equips, mobilizes and inspires people to take action that changes the world. At the center of the network are our more than 250 affiliates serving 83% of the American population and 12 international communities. It is also a “network of networks” that includes our partnering nonprofits, government agencies, faith-based organizations, and companies seeking to engage in service. The strategy of HandsOn Network is to build a “network of networks” with diverse connection points for citizen action, offering many ways for people to align their interests with community needs. Anchored by our 250 linked HandsOn Action Centers, this strategy includes creating a new national culture of service through public policy, advocacy, thought leadership and utilization of media and 21st century social networking technology.
