2. Mathematics and Dress Making
Mathematics plays a crucial role in sewing, whether you’re a trainee
or an experienced seamstress. A designers ensures that the dress will
fit the models requires exact and advised measures. For the price of
items, designers and retailers use calculations to determine dress
prices by calculating the cost of fabric, hangers, thread, and other
musts. They also use calculations to determine when and how to offer
discounts. A person will need to understand geometric shapes, angles,
and measures to draft patterns directly. Mathematics is an integral part
of sewing, guiding everything from measures and pattern adaptations
to fabric computations and intricate design fundamentals. The
purpose of this presentation is to show that many mathematical
components are incorporated into creative and applied fields like
sewing, and to demonstrate how much of my costume’s success
depended on what I’ve learned in my math major. I doubt my costume
would be as well fitted, consistently patterned, symmetrical, ample, or
durable without the mathematical understanding I had. Therefore, I
found few ways where mathematics is involved in sewing and
designing.
3. What Measurements are required to make a customers Dress
Sewing involves accurate measurements to create dress that fit
well. Understanding concepts like inches, centimeters, and
fractions is essential for accurate measuring, cutting fabric, and
ensuring a proper fit. The designers used inches to take
measurement for dress making and centimeters are mostly used
for making different designs on dress. Meters are used to
purchase clothes, laces and foam etc. Addition, subtraction,
multiplications and division are also in use to sale and purchase
dresses and materials which is used to complete a dress. Some
important points are followings;
4. Pattern Scaling
Sewing patterns are often available in various sizes. To adapt a pattern to
your specific measurements or to scale it up or down, you need math skills to
calculate the adjustments required while maintaining the proportions of the
design.
Seam Allowances
Seam allowances are the extra fabric added to each side of a seam for sewing.
Knowing how to measure and add or subtract seam allowances is
fundamental to constructing dresses correctly.
Fabric Yardage
Calculating the amount of fabric needed for a project is crucial to avoid
running out or wasting material. This involves determining the fabric width,
pattern repeat, and layout to minimize waste.
Pleats, Darts, and Tucks
Creating decorative elements or shaping garments often requires the use of
pleats, darts, tucks, or gathers. These techniques rely on math to determine
their placement, size, and spacing for the desired outcome.
Pattern Making
If you design your own sewing patterns, advanced math skills are essential.
You’ll need to understand geometric shapes, angles, and measurements to
draft patterns accurately
5. Important Calculations for the endurance of Dress business
The factory price of your product includes many different cost items: labor,
fabrics, accessories, employees, machinery, energy and more. Such costs
fluctuate, sometimes heavily. Fabric prices, for instance, have risen significantly
in 2021 (for both polyester and cotton), and so have shipping costs.
Furthermore, labor costs have risen, particularly in Asian production countries.
These costs are central to the sourcing strategy of European buyers. When costs
change, sourcing strategies change with it. That’s why a designer need to
monitor all your costs regularly. ( Prices depends on the selections of markets
too)
Example;
Price of a Causal Dress
Example 1;
Cost of clothe = 200 per meter and 1 normal dress consumes 5 meter clothe
(excluded stroller) so 200 * 5 = RS 1000
Price of Lace = RS 40 per 1 meter and causal dress consumes 5 meter lace
(included in front of arms, chalks and glair ) so 40 * 5 = RS 200
Price of Buttons, silk, thread etc += RS 300
Stiching charges = RS 1000
Total Price = 1000 + 200+ 300+ 1000 = RS 2500
Note; prices changes due to variety of things and selection of clothe too. It also
effects due to area.
6. Example 2;
Let’s have calculations on another casual dress which have stroller with it and
variation in design too. ( Addition, multiplication)
Seam allowances = 150 RS
Pleats, Darts, and Tucks = 300 RS
Total required Clothe included Stroller= 7.5 meter
Price of clothe = 2200 RS
Price of Laces included Stroller = 300 RS
Price of Thread, buttons, cotton, and foam = 150 RS
Stiching Charges included attaching Lace on Stroller = 1500 RS
Total Price of Dress = Addition of prices of all material which is used to make this dress
So 150+ 2150+ 300+150+1500 = 4300 RS
Example 3;
Suppose our client changes his/mind and want to add double laces on shirt and stroller
so we need to check the price of lace again. The lace price is 150 RS as per meter, and we
need to purchase 8 meter lace more. Therefore 8*150 = 1200 RS
Now what will be the payable amount = 4250 + 1200 = 5500 RS
Example 4; ( Subtraction)
Our client changes his/her mind and he said you to eliminate all laces and stroller too
so what will you do?
Total price of lace was = 1200+300= 1500 RS
Price of Stroller = 700 Rs
Total amount to subtract from price = 1500 + 700 = 2200
New Price of dress will be = 5500 – 2200 = 3300 RS
7. Geometry concepts in Dress Designing
Geometry is necessary for fashion design because it explains
visual phenomena like how patterns are formed and how
garments fit together. Without a good sense and understanding of
math, designers would not be able to produce designs that look
accurate and stylish. Anyone who wants to create successful
fashion should have a strong knowledge of geometry.
