Venturing Crew 180's B.S.A. Florida Sea Base Recap
1. Sea Base is one of 4 B.S.A. High Adventure Bases.
Crew 180 has been to Sea Base once, and to the
Philmont Scout Ranch twice.
Other adventures have been this summer’s Cavalcade in New
Mexico, a 100 mile canoe trip, 2 50 mile canoe/hikes, and
participation in an international event in England
2. … is on Big Munson Island,
owned by Sea Base and
reached by paddling 5 ½
miles in “war canoes”
3. A B.S.A. swim test
and then snorkling
instruction and
gear check-out
4. A visit to the quartermaster to
“shop” for what we wanted for food
– Crews plan their own menu.
Then clean and disinfect the
barrels to pack the food and
supplies in, as well as filling water
jugs with a week’s worth of fresh
water.
5. We learned about the native species,
including an endangered species of deer.
One Key Deer named Steve was likely to
visit. Oh, and there are poisonous trees,
too!
11. Each day we had plenty to do, including finding
our way out of a maze to the ocean. And, by the
way, we were unhurried: no watches were allowed,
or any electronics for that matter!! By week’s end
we figured out that the staff used the tides to
know about where in the day we were!
12. We used the war
canoes to get around..
Out to a reef one
night for snorkeling
after dark, and to
gather bait fish for
our deep sea fishing.

20. Part of the fun was
joining in games with
Boy Scouts from around
the country, including a
Troop from the
Philidelphia area…
21. We shared the charter bus with
the Phily Troop and joined them
in a side trip to visit the
Everglades by airboat that
included a tour of a Reservation
given by tribe members whose
ancestors were here before the
Spanish.
22. • Last week of July / first week of August time frame to be able to be at
Westover Air Show the second week of July
•We need to enter the lottery that opens January 15 and closes February 15 to
compete for a 2018 opportunity!
•Sea Base has minimums and maximums. For our trip we will are planning for
about 10 youth and 4 leaders (2 male, 2 female) with room for 2 more youth or
leaders. If more than 16 are interested we need to scale to 18 minimum with 6
leaders (3 female, 3 male).
•There are economies of scale involved
•Group airline travel has a 10 person minimum
•Ground transportation is “by group”
