Theme Of Everything That Rises Must Converge By Flannery O...
While the effect of racism and discrimination is hotly debated, the world is not what it was yesterday. The changing society can ultimately result in
battles between young and old generations causing individuals to rely on human instincts to resolve issues. In Flannery O' Connor's short story
"Everything That Rises Must Converge," two characters clash in a generational conflict. On the surface, the story shows an issue of racism and
discrimination, however, it shows a deeper understanding of humanity's maturity. Characters include Julian, and his nameless mother who has high
"blood pressure" (O' Connor 405). Although Julian criticizes his mom's behaviour towards people of colour, he fails to realize the downfall of his own
demeanor.

Julian's mother dwells in the past and family heritage, not familiarizing to a new society and integrated South. The mother is not used to treating blacks
with equality, yet she wears the same hat as the negro woman. When Julian is displeased with his mother's point of view, he aims to change her,
showing a generational conflict. Julian does not reach his full potential and his relationship with his mother is of much distress. After the bus ride and
confrontation with the negro woman, the mother dies, before she can accept new customs. Although Julian is filled with remorse and regret, Patricia
Dinneen Maida points out that the stroke could be a drive for Julian to change. Neither Julian or his mother are wrong, nor adapting to each other's point
of view. Montgomery expresses that although the relation to the title seems unknown, it is only after the tragic incident that the story's title comes into

Pierre Bonnard Research Paper
Pierre Bonnard was born on October 3rd, 1867 at Fontenay–aux–Roses, a village outside Paris. He was the son of prominent official of the French
Ministry of War. Due to his insitnace Bonnard studied law at Sorbonne from 1885 to 1888. During the year of 1887 Bonnard enrolled in evening
classes at AcadГ©mie Julian, which was an art school in Paris. While at the art school he and four of his friends joined together and formed group
which was known as Les Nabis. They used this group to integrate art into daily life; they did this by combining nature with personal aesthetic and
symbolism. They used posters, prints, book illustrations and paintings to show this. In 1981 Bonnard won his first competition which was making a
poster for French champagne, also in 1891 Bonnard showed his work at an annual exhibit at the Society of Independent Artists. This is where he
started to make his mark in the artist community. He didn't become an established and successful artist until 1896; this is when he had his first solo art

Also around 1910 he left Paris to travel around the South of France. Even though he traveled to these places, there seems to of been no effect on his
art. During his mature years he was described as a man with a "quiet temperament" and was always independent. Bonnard was made the honorary
president of a young French artist society in 1918. In 1925 Bonnard married Maria Boursin. For many years before their marriage she was an
ever–present subject in his artwork. Also during these years he began painting several self–portraits, street scenes, still life's, and landscapes. After his
marriage, Maria Boursin and Bonnard moved to Southern France, which stayed their permanent resident. Shortly after buying their home in 1926,

Pierre De Fermat Essay
Pierre de Fermat Pierre de Fermat was born in the year 1601 in Beaumont–de–Lomages, France. Mr. Fermat's education began in 1631. He was home
schooled. Mr. Fermat was a single man through his life. Pierre de Fermat, like many mathematicians of the early 17th century, found solutions to the
four major problems that created a form of math called calculus. Before Sir Isaac Newton was even born, Fermat found a method for finding the
tangent to a curve. He tried different ways in math to improve the system. This was his occupation. Mr. Fermat was a good scholar, and amused
himself by restoring the work of Apollonius on plane loci. Mr. Fermat published only a few papers in hislifetime and gave no systematic exposition of
his methods. He had a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fermat's proof is as follows. Let n be prime, and suppose it is equal to x2 –y2 that is, to (x+y)(x–y). Now, by hypothesis, the only basic, integral factors
of n and n and unity, hence x+y=n and x–y=1. Solving these equations we get x=1 /2 (n+1) and y=1 /2(n–1). –He gave a proof of the statement made
by Diophantus that the sum of the squares of two numbers cannot be the form of 4n–1. He added a corollary which I take to mean that it is impossible
that the product of a square and a prime form 4n–1[even if multiplied by a number that is prime to the latter], can be either a square or the sum of two
squares. For example, 44 is a multiple of 11(which is of the form 4 x 3 – 1) by 4, therefore it cannot be expressed as the sum of two squares. He also
stated that a number of the form a2 +b2, where a is prime b, cannot be divided by a prime of the form 4n–1. –Every prime of the form 4n+1 is accurate
as the sum of two squares. This problem was first solved by Euler, who showed that a number of the form 2(4n+1) can be always showen as the sum of
two squares, of course it was Mr. Pierre de Fermat. –If a, b, c, are integers, a2 + b2= c2, then ab cannot be a square. Lagrange solved this. – The
determination of a number x such that x2n+1 may be squared, where n is a given integer which is not squared. Lagrange gave a solution of this also.

The Renaissance: Two Sides Of The Renaissance
The Renaissance
Sides 1 The Renaissance period was between 1400–1600 century. It began in Italy and spread to the rest of Europe. The Renaissance time is were self
paintings mostly came from. In most of the painting the people were nude. They started making the painting 3D. There are many things about the
Renaissance. Renaissance means born a new. The concept enshrined in the world of Renaissance is actually one of rebirth. It was considered the
beginning of modern history. The High Renaissance was from about 1495–1527. The Late Renaissance was from about 1527–1600. Europe 's gateway
to trade was Venice. Venice was a producer of fine glass. The capital of textiles wasFlorence. The pandemic Black Death happened in the fourteenth
century in Italy. The plaque was carried by fleas on ships. Due to the lack of proper sanitation it spread quickly. About 1.4 million people in
England died. It was also called the bubonic plaque. The value of working class increased and workers traveled to more favorable positions. The
price of food dropped and land value decreased. The disease spread more rampant in areas of poverty because of poor sanitation, dirty drinking water
and lice. Children were hit the hardest. Fun facts about the Renaissance. In most of the painting with people in them the people were naked. This is
how pornography started. They started panting people nude during the Renaissance. Some of the people they painted was from there religion. Some of

Modern Day Olympics Dbq
There are quite a few factors that shaped the modern–day Olympics from 1892 to 2002. Pierre de Coubertin states that he wanted to create the
Olympics to spread world peace. He does this by substituting war for friendly sports competitions (doc 1). Of course, there were some bumps in the
road while trying to achieve this utopia. Some factors that have changed the Olympics are the allowing of women being able to compete in the
Olympics, women's suffrage, nationalism, wars, and economic conditions (doc 2–7). Women have gone through a lot during this time frame: women's
suffrage, feminism, and more. Despite these instances, women's rights have increased from 1908 to 1992. In 1908, 2% of the competitors were
women (doc 2). This number of women... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Japan was undergoing a mini–depression in the economic department. This was due to the aftershock of World War 2. The Japanese mayor, Ryotaro
Azuma, knew they were going through an economic depression, so he wanted the Olympics to be held in Japan. Furthermore, the Olympics were later
held in Japan in 1972. Afterward, Azuma was greatly satisfied and content with the outcome. Japan was, again, part of the worldwide trade and the
economy flourished. He believes that the companies, that deal with the Olympics, have saved him (doc 4). This also relates to the fees paid by the
United States to air the Olympics on TV and radio broadcasts. In 1996, the Olympics were held in Atlanta and the money spent on the social media
increased by about 135% from 1988 (doc 7). It can be inferred that the Olympics can revive nations; therefore, the United States agreed to pay more
money since the Olympics were held in Atlanta, Georgia. The spending of money was being carried over to the 2000 Olympics, as well. Throughout
this journey, many factors had an impact on the Olympics. Some of the factors that changed the modern day Olympics are women competitors,
women's suffrage, nationalism, wars, and economic conditions. An increase of women's rights was given, pride for the nations was shown, wars still
occurred, and economies have flourished. The longer the Olympic Games have aged, the closer the world's state is to Pierre's

Essay on Flannery O'Connor
Love Always Converge
Flannery O' Conner was born in Georgia. Her Southern Catholic views on racial issues and religion gives O' Conner her name. She continued to
express her views on the decaying south up to her death. " Everything That Rises Must Converge" was one of O'Connor's last pieces before lupus took
her life. The title" Everything That Rises Must Converge" is borrowed from the works of Teilhard de Chardin. "The religion philosopher explains the
ideal of everything and everyone will be joined at the end of the geologic time." (179) The author uses this theme to explain in the story how the old

A mother's love overpowers any tradition or belief. Julian is far too self–absorbed to appreciate the many sacrifices his mother has made for him in the

teeth to rot to afford him braces. Through all Julian ungratefulness, she does not give up on him like she doesn't give up on the return of the old

Essay about Leisure During the Classical Period
Regarding leisure and sport during the Classical period, it is important to comment on the Olympic Games. Although this event has morphed since its
inception in 776 B.C. it is still known throughout the world today. The first Olympic Games were held in the Greek city of Olympia, ninety miles west
of Athens. The games were originally a religious ceremony to honor the Greek god, Zeus. Boxing, wrestling, and sprinting were just some of the events
that were included in the early years of the Olympics. The games continued for over a thousand years before an empire turning towards Christianity
abolished them. This new government rejected the 'pagan origins' of the games. It wasn't until the end of the nineteenth century when Pierre de ... Show

However, the key component of this new religious movement was that God chose who would be saved with the belief that individuals were on
earth to glorify and work for God. The phrase 'Protestant Ethic' was coined in 1904 by sociologist Max Weber and describes how followers emphasized
hard work and diligence as a way to constantly demonstrate their salvation to God ("Max Weber"). The Greek view of a balanced approach to
work and leisure was gone. As Cross (1990) explains, 'the old comforts of community leisure were but a snare in dragging the individual believer
down from his isolated path of following Christ' (p. 26). Cross (1990) further illustrates that 'leisure was feared both as a lure to sin and a threat to
godliness' (p.27).
Although the Bible recognized the Sabbath, it was the Puritans that shaped it for generations to come. Regarding holidays, the Puritans only regarded
the Sabbath as being biblical. The other holidays were 'invented by men for pleasure' (Cross, 1990, p.29). The Sabbath represented a major shift in the
work week and allowed for a day of rest for its followers, even though it was to seriously worship God. The Puritans gained momentum and used their
power to control leisure and recreation during the Sabbath. Even after the breakdown of the Protestant movement, the effects of regulating the Sabbath
continue. In the United States,

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin was born on May 1, 1881 at a family estate of Sarcenat near Clermont–Ferrand, Auvergne. He was born into a family of
eight, being the fourth born child to Emmanuel and Berthe–Adele Teilhard de Chardin. His oldest brother died in September 1902, then his youngest
sister died in 1904, and his oldest sister in 1911. The death of his oldest sister greatly saddened Pierre because she was the only other religious family

He was a very unique man and had an interesting theory that I like very much. He was concerned most with the expanding population. He didn't
understand how we can continue to grow in population in an Earth of finite resources. A quote by Teilhard de Chardin in "Phenomenon of Man",
"The success of humanity's evolution will not be determined by survival of the fittest but by our own capacity to converge and unify". What he
meant by this is that it isn't about who is going to be the best but can we come together as a whole? "We are one, after all, you and I. Together we
suffer, together exist, and forever will recreate each other". I believe this quote from Chardin describes his theory of evolution in a visual manner. I
like this quote because I can easily grasp what he is saying. Through unity and love, we evolve. Pierre lived through two world wars, and through the
rise of nuclear power. I believe he was incredibly intelligent and very observative. Through the wars he lived and the places he traveled, he saw this

Principles Of The International Olympic Committee
Within every business or organization, there must be a set of values and goals that are established to prove consistency throughout their existence.
These values and principles are there for them to follow and to lay groundwork as to how they should handle everything that encompasses their
organization. In the same way, theInternational Olympic Committee was set to provide a charter to highlight their mission and their principles. While
it has become clear that Olympism aims to promote a "joy of effort, the educational value of good example, social responsibility and respect for
universal fundamental ethical principles" (IOC, 2015, p.13), it has also become evident that they must partner with sponsors to avoid debt like in the

This in return turns out to be misleading to the investors, but since General Electric is also sponsoring the Olympics this could cause one to question
the true stance on their sponsorship. By General Electric deviating from SEC rules, it's as if the International Olympic Committee were not to follow
the charter and to be going against their values of following good governance within their organization.
Considering the above contradiction, a solution would be to get more involved in the governance of General Electrics. A way to do this would be to
have the International Olympic Committees financial auditors evaluate and monitor General Electric's financial auditors and double check their work.
This would ensure that any wrong–doing on General Electric's behalf be taken care of immediately and with advice from the International Olympic
Committee on making the right decision that will go along with their values. Through this solution, the Olympics don't risk losing a highly–ranked
company as a sponsor, but can also aid in reducing irrevocable mistakes.
Furthermore, two other sponsors, Samsung and Panasonic have undergone scandals that contradict the Olympics' values. In November of 2016,
Samsung and Panasonic were under investigation for abusing labor rights. In their supply chains in Malaysia, workers seemed to be deceived
regarding pay and worked long hours with an inadequate amount of rest (Pattison, 2016). As sponsors of the

Athletic Activity in the Ancient World, An Outline
In ancient Greece athletic activity in the ancient world fell into 2 categories: competitive athletics in public religious festivals (victors won prizes and
honored with statues and poems) or sporting events in a gymnasium.
2. The two categories were brought about by different beliefs in how the Olympics began:
a. According to Philostratos, an ancient Greek author and philosopher during this time, the first contest was held during the festival at Olympia in 776
B.C. where many competitive races were held. This was a race in which the athletes ran around the circumference of the stadium.
b. The Games can be seen as a religious worship of the gods and heroes.
c. This idea that the Olympics were seen as worship just supports the belief that the gods in fact began the Olympic Games. In one story, five brothers
fought to protect baby Zeus (King of the gods) by running in a race where the victor was crowned with an olive branch crown–thus beginning the
Olympic Games. This story is closer to what happened during the ancient Greek Games but there are many other stories that exemplify the god's part in
the Games.
3. The Olympic Games were seen as a status symbol–if you were not part of higher class you were not able to participate and win
a. Kind of like the Hunger Games book today where in Districts one, two and three the tributes were to train for their whole life to win while others
were just thrown in.
b. Another example would be ancient China––where

How Did The Olympic Games Change The World?
Over many lifetimes the Olympic games have been a symbol of the most prestigious sporting event in the world. Throughout time the games have
evolved from two events to two hundred. Along with the events, the athletes and vision of the games have changed as well. This paper is going to
show the changes for better or worse of the games. For over a thousand years there has been people participating in the Olympics. The first
documented games were in greece in the year 776 BC. The games were first called "Olympics" because the first location was close to Mount
Olympus, Greece. During these first games events were limited and all competitors were males. Events were held in a coliseum and a few of the
competitions were wrestling and sprinting.
The games were held each year for hundreds of years until the 4th century BC. The games were stopped during that time by an Olympian ruler named
Theodosius A. Christian. Modern historians believe that the ruler banned the games because they went against his edicts. An edict was the rulers
proclamation when he assumed power from the previous ruler and it is believed that he literally banned the games in this order. After Christians
proclamation the games were not revived until the late 1800s by a frenchman named Pierre de Coubertin. He was Born into a French aristocratic
family, he became an academic and studied a broad range of topics, most notably education and history. In 1892 Coubertin proposed a series of games

The Olympic Games Of The United States Essay
In 1896, the Olympic Games were officially reborn into the modern era thanks to a Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin (Lewis, 1992). In
1904, the Games of the III Olympiad arrived in the United States, marking itself as the first Olympics to be held in said country as well as the first
hosted outside of Europe. Often forgotten, this specific Olympics also signifies the beginning of the horrible luck Chicago, Illinois, has had regarding
the hosting rights. With four losses under its belt and a history of bad news, Chicago is frequently told–to no one's surprise–that it should simply give
up on its dream and focus on improving itself. However, who's to say that the Jewel of the Midwest can't do both? By incorporating a
well–thought–out narrative of what the city has gone through into their appeal process, Chicago could very well win the bid next time
around–whenever that might be. The city boasts an efficiently compact setting; a history and love of sports that entices amiable relations between
residents; and an enthralling tale to tell. Overall, Chicago can use its need for a strong community to reach the top of the podium in the rigorous battle
for host city status. A point often overlooked, the city technically won the hosting rights once.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the city the right to host the third Olympics in 1904. Be that as it may, those games did not take
place in Chicago as planned. Instead, Saint Louis, Missouri, captured the rights

A Brief Biography of Pierre de Fermat
Pierre de Fermat Pierre de Fermat was born in 1601 "near Montauban". He was born to a French leather merchant and was home–schooled. All of his
free time was spent studying mathematics. He spent a good amount of time in his life arguing with Descartes which ended well and turned out to
be "a friendly conclusion". He found math very fun, delving into its deepest points and "amused himself by conjecturally restoring the work of
Apollonius on plane loci." Fermat didn't publish anything in his lifetime. He simple wrote a few papers but never really documented his works
completely. HIS work wasn't found written until after he died at Castres on January 12,1665 "on loose sheets of paper or written in the margins of
works which he had read, annotated, and unaccompanied by any proof." This makes it hard to tell when it was written and whether or not he had
taken the ideas from someone else at that time period. At the age of 30, he became a counselor for his local parliament at Toulouse. He was known
as a very good and honest counselor. There, he worked on most of his mathematical studies and was mostly self taught. He wrote most of his papers
there as well, even though the papers are few in numbers. His papers were the "final forms" of his works and cannot be "dated before 1660". He never
dated anything himself, making it hard to pinpoint a particular date in which he had written these works. Fermat studied many statistical problems.

The Characteristics Of The Piltdown Man
A century ago, the Piltdown man was presented to the world as one of the most phenomenal and astonishing discoveries of time – only to be revealed as
the boldest and most ingenious hoax in the history of science.
In 1912, Charles Dawson, a scientist and an amateur archaeologist, had exhumed two skull bones and a jawbone with two teeth after a three year
excavation of the Piltdown gravel in Sussex, England. Dawson along with Arthur Smith Woodward, imminent geologist and a caretaker of the
geological department in the British Museum claimed that the jawbone and skull fragment must have come from the same skull as they were a
seemingly good fit. The skull had characteristics of both ape and human. Woodward named the skullPiltdown man. On 18 December 1912, they

which matched Dawson and Woodward's prediction about its size, was excavated a year later. In addition to there, they also discovered another

The Olympic Games in Ancient Greece and Now
Throughout the years, major events such as the Olympic games have shaped our history, establishing global tradition and unity. The games serve as a
gathering for hundreds of competing nations, with each country showcasing their best athletes. However, the games were not always how they are
today and have changed dramatically throughout the years.
The first recorded Olympics were held in 776 B.C. However, it is believed that the games had been going on much earlier. It is said that Heracles, the
son of Zeus and Alcmene, was the founding father of the Olympic games (The Olympic Games 1). The Olympics essentially began as a religious
ceremony honoring the Greek god Zeus. The celebration was a sporting event held in Olympia, where the title of the "Olympics" was originated. The
festival occurred every four years in the summer and featured a series of athletic contests. Many of which are very different from the sports played
today.
The games played during the Olympics in ancient Greece over three thousand years ago consisted of running and equestrian events, javelin, wrestling
and boxing. Horse drawn chariots were often used in equestrian events. Over time new sports were added. As culture changed and the games became
international, sports such as chariot races were no longer a part of the modernized Olympics. The combination between wrestling and boxing was a
sport known as pankration. However the sport included no rules. This has changed with the introduction of the modern

The Birthday Paradox is the chance of 23 people in the same room to have the same birthday. It's a 50 percent chance that there is. Surprisingly, the

percent for 47 people. With 57 people there is better than a 99 percent chance of a birthday match. In my project i'm doing 50 people to have a better

Data are the facts and figures that are collected, analyzed, and summarized for presentation and interpretation. Statistics was developed in the early 19th
century as the study of populations, economies, and moral actions and later in that century as the mathematical tool for analyzing such numbers.
Examples of Statistics that are used today are Mean, Median ,Mode and Range, Histograms and Stem and leaf plots. Sample survey methods are used
to collect data from observational studies, and experimental design methods are used to collect data from experimental studies. The area of descriptive
statistics is concerned primarily with methods of presenting and interpreting data using graphs, tables, and numerical summaries. Whenever
statisticians use data from a sample., a subset of the population–to make statements about a population, they are performing statistical inference. The
population is how many people i'm doing for my project which is 50 people. Estimation and hypothesis testing are procedures used to make statistical
conclusions. Probability plays a key role in statistical inference, it is used to provide measures of the quality and precision of the inferences. Some of
these methods are used primarily for single–variable studies, while others, such as regression and correlation analysis, are used to make inferences
about relationships among two or more variables. A paradox is a statement that, despite apparently sound reasoning from true premises, leads to a
self–contradictory or a logically unacceptable conclusion. The purpose of a paradox is to arrest attention and provoke fresh thought. An entertaining
example is to determine the probability that in a randomly selected group of n people at least two have the same birthday. If one assumes for
simplicity that a year contains 365 days and that each day is equally likely to be the birthday of a randomly selected person, then

the athletes was glory, fame and, in a real sense, historical immorality" (Cartwright).

Summary Of Pierre Teilhard De Chardin
John Hughes
Mr. Lace
Senior Theology Honors
18 November 2011
Mr. Lace Trimester Final Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, A. North Whitehead, Monsignor Luigi Guissani, and Charles Hartshorne have contributed
significant bits of Theology as the Roman Catholic Church, perhaps a century late, has finally come to a difficult crossroads about the creation of the
world: Should the Vatican alter (no pun intended) modify Church Dogmas, which are infallible snippets of doctrinal teaching, or ignore rapid scientific
finds that have eroded the Church's belief that God created one man and one woman. These men, who study Theology, Physics, Theology, and
Philosophy, respectively, provide scientific basis on why theCatholic Church must adapt a Theology ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, there is no proof for the alleged Creator. It is important, however, to acknowledge that Science has not disproved God either. Science has
further discounted the Church's teaching that Adam and Eve existed with artifacts of animals, many of which have human characteristics, existing
thousands of years before the appearance of the human form society knows today. Science has discovered that humans share approximately ninety
seven percent of the same DNA with chimpanzees, and that humans have one less chromosome than monkeys. Charles Darwin, a nineteenth century
English naturalist, developed a controversial peace that challenged the established theories of how humans developed, which until his time, remained
based heavily on the Christian Churches. His Theory of Evolution, and the Roman Catholic Church's response (or lack thereof) to the theory has brought
increased criticism from liberal theologians and scientists alike about whether or not the Church is serious about evolution and science in general. This
comes as an admittedly liberal organization, National Public Radio, released an article that detailed how "At Johns Hopkins University, research
suggests that chemicals that act on the serotonin system trigger mystical experiences that are life–altering. Serotonin is a chemical messenger that
helps regulate mood and sleep." (NPR) Consequently, some scientists now claim that the evidence is "scientific fact" that

Dangerous Liaisons Essay
Comparison and Differences of Dangerous Liaisons Novel and Film The film Dangerous Liaison, directed by Stephen Frears remains just about
faithful to the epistolary novel, Dangerous Liaisons, by Choderlos de Laclos. Stephen Frears does "betray" the novel towards the end of the film but, it
makes the ending that much more better and enticing. The film represents what the epistolary novel only hints at us readers. The novel is composed of
letters where we only get a sense of the characters thoughts and emotions. The film tries to put those words into action but only showing one version
of each scene. It is different in which the writer of the novel is using words while the film maker is using pictures to describe what's happening. ... Show

The biggest betrayal the film makes to the novel is the ending. The film ends when Merteuil goes to the opera to find out she is hated by everyone
there, she goes back to her room and it ends with her removing her makeup, her destiny is left unknown. In the book, she gets a very painful case of
small pox and loses sight in one of her eyes after her letters to Valmont have been published. When Merteuil removes her makeup at the end of the
film, she is wiping away the surface that made her attractive, her desirability is being wiped away. Her power has been based on her appearance
and her destruction of her face symbolizes her destruction of herself. Merteuil no longer is the strong feminist she use to be, she is now a weak
woman just like Tourvel. I think the director made a good choice in changing the ending of the film. I was shocked and somewhat happy to see
Merteuil finally get what she deserved. The jaw dropper for me was when she fell while leaving the opera it symbolized her reputation falling too.
Everyone use to look up to Merteuil and she would control them like puppets and now the roles have been turned. For me the ending of the movie
was a lot more satisfying and jaw dropping. Merteuil tried everything in her power to win the game of revenge and it back fired on her. Vicomte de

How Great Of An Honor Is It At Host An Event Such As The...
How great of an honor is it to host an event such as the Olympics? According to Stefan Szymanski, "the hosting of major sporting events has become
the subject of intense competition among nations. Governments will make large financial commitments in order to win the bidding competition." The
regression of big time sporting events have changed immensely, from firstly being about showing who the best athlete was, to now a way of nations
being able to bring fame and possible fortunes to their doors for just hosting such huge events. 2000–2015 has been a time span where the conversation
about the Olympics, it's events, and it's policies have changed.
The Olympic games originated in ancient Greece, about 3,000 years ago (8th century B.C. to 4th century A.D.) (A+E Networks, 2015). The games
took place in Olympia located in the western Peloponnese peninsula. At first the Olympic games were used as a religious festival in honor of the ruler
of gods, Zeus. After many years the Olympic games were re–introduced in the 19th century, which was done to bring countries back together as one
and participate in this world wide competition of olympians. The games as a whole have changed the way of how people see the athletes. In the
beginning of it all, the athletes competed for their religious believes, now the race to be the best is at its highest, with the 28 sports to participate in.
According to the author, the number of professional has increased by approximately 10,500 professional

The Novel ' The Expedition Of Humphry Clinker ' By Tobias...
The epistolary novel, a novel that is written entirely in the form of letters, first gained traction in the early 18th century. Two epistolary novels that
encapsulated this style very well were Dangerous Liaisons and Evelina. The similarities are also not solely in terms of writing style. Both of these
authors use the letters that their characters write as a method of deception to obtain what they truly desire, even if it does not appear as such. Despite
the divide that separates them in genre, both Burney and Laclos exhibited this style very well as the authors used these letters to convey their
characters goals, intentions, and desires to the reader in their works.
We will first examine the novel by Pierre Ambrose Laclos, Dangerous Liaisons. There are a few reasons why Laclos' letters provided a sense of
importance stylistically. Dangerous Liaisons was not a typical work, as it was the first French epistolary novel to use more than one perspective
(Brittanica). As we know The Expedition of Humphry Clinker by Tobias Smollett was published in 1771, had multiple perspectives displayed through
letters, but Smollett was a Scot, and his work was set in both England and Scotland. His work was never able to gain much popularity in France.
French literature in general did not implore this style; they usually followed a more traditionalist model when it came to the novel. He was also the
first French author to employ letters that were not designed solely for reporting events.

Different Eras In Olympic History
There are two different eras in Olympic history. One is the origin of the Games in the ancient times when it was held in Greece. The other is the
modern era when Pierre de Coubertin revived them. Different issues dominated the Olympics in the different eras. Religion was emphasized during the
Olympics in Ancient Greece. On the other hand, it is politics that have dominated the modern Olympics. Despite the International Olympic
Confederation's or as it is generally known, the IOC, best efforts to keep politics out of the Olympics, there have been many instances throughout
several Olympic Games in which politics has transcended the Olympics.
One of the biggest conflicts in recent history was the Cold War. During that time, theSoviet Union and the US fought in many areas including the
Olympics. The 1952 Helsinki Olympics were the first Olympics that Russia had competed in since their revolution. At the time, there were already
tensions between the US and Russia. The Olympics provided an international showdown for people to observe who was winning the war, "The Free
World" or the Communists. It showed as the competitiveness between the two countries led to several new world records and better results across the
board. The 1980 Moscow Games were another example of politics coming before the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, that just isn't case as politics often gets in the way of competition. There are many more examples through history such as South Africa
getting banned for 32 years because of its apartheid policies to the civil rights movement. The Olympics provides a global stage where people and
countries can show the world what they feel and in the end, that is almost always prioritized over the Games. The fact is since the Olympics are an
international competition, international politics will always be connected to it and affect

Francois Quesnay
Francois Quesnay was the founder of the economic system that eventually was called the physiocratic system. He was born on June 4, 1694 in
Paris, France. His father was a country lawyer that didn 't get payed very much money. Francois didn 't receive any financial aid from his family to
get an education. In result of no education, he didn 't learn how to read until he was twelve years old. However, he was able to gain some
knowledge of medicine as a young adult. In 1718, at the age of only 24, he started practicing medicine in the village of Mantes. Between 1730 and
1758, he began to write several medical papers that contained very original contributions from well–known people.
Francois didn 't obtain a formal medical degree until 1744. However, in 1735, his reputation was so good that he had gotten a position in Paris as a
physician to the Duke of Villeroy. After that position, he decide to move to Versailles, having a new boss namedMadame de Pompadour. When he got
there, he became a consulting physician to Louis XV and got to meet many popular economists at the time. After realizing moving to Versailles was an
excellent decision, he decided to live there for the rest of his life.
Francois had written many things on medicine for awhile, but he didn 't publish his first writing on economics until 1756, which was in his early

Tis Pity She's A Whore Analysis
Consummation in Epithalamion and 'Tis Pity She's a Whore In his introduction to Petrarchan Love and the Continental Renaissance, Gordon Braden
claims that much of the scholarly conversation on Petrarchism centers on the "reactions of particular writers to a dominant tradition already in
place...as a kind of agonistic revolt against that heavy inheritance [of the Petrarchan tradition] (Braden xii). What Braden seeks to accomplish in his
scrutiny of these same writers is a reorientation of the scholarly point of view on the Petrarchan love tradition. Rather than seeing writers resisting the
tradition, Braden suggests that instead there is "a sense of the tradition as opportunity, a starting point that makes new action both possible and
meaningful"... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Braden sees this capacity for seduction having developed via the kiss's growing presence in Petrarchan–inspired poetry of the sixteenth century. In
some texts, the kiss is one "in which souls are exchanged without the taint of physical lust, and possibly with that protection they become part of the
expected commerce between lover and lady in almost all Renaissance venues" (108). But as Braden shows through Pierre de Ronsard, the kiss wished
from the beloved could turn from a chaste kiss–which Ronsard's poet dismisses as "icy"–into one that has "savour in the mouth, or never kiss" at all
(qtd. in Braden 108–109). This transformation from chaste/unconsummated love into more erotic poems is a subject on which Philip Sidney later
complains in his Defence of Poesy, arguing that the once–virtuous love poems have become "larded with passionate Sonnets" intended to seduce

Slaves Of Society : The Women Of Les Liaisons Dangereuses
Slaves of Society: The Women of Les Liaisons dangereuses With each letter in Les Liaisons dangereuses, Choderlos de Laclos advances a great many
games of chess being played simultaneously. In each, the pieces–women of the eighteenth–century Parisian aristocracy–are tossed about mercilessly but
with great precision on the part of the author. One is a pawn: a convent girl pulled out of a world of simplicity and offered as an entree to a public
impossible to sate; another is a queen: a calculating monument to debauchery with fissures from a struggle with true love. By examining their
similarities and differences, Laclos explores women's constitutions in a world that promises ruin for even the most formidable among them. Presenting
the reader glimpses of femininity from a young innocent's daunting debut to a faithful woman's conflicted quest for heavenly virtue to another's ruthless
pursuit of vengeance and earthly pleasures, he insinuates the harrowing journey undertaken by every girl as she is forced to make a name for herself as
a woman amongst the tumult of a community that machinates at every turn her downfall at the hands of the opposite sex. In his careful presentation of
the novel's female characters, Laclos condemns this unrelenting subjugation of women by making clear that every woman's fate in such a society is a
definitive and resounding checkmate. Laclos gives ammunition to his argument by steadily demonstrating the weakness instilled in women from
youth. In the

Pierre De Consard And Louise Labe Comparison
France had some well–known and talented poets, poetry got enhanced by them during the period of renaissance. To name a few, Joachim du Bellay,
Pierre de Ronsard, and Louise Labe. French culture was revolutionized and influenced by these three poets. Additionally, these poets had some
similarities in their poetry even though they had their own diverse form of writing. The most meaningful "I do not write of love", by Joachim du Bellay
's poem has a powerful humility in it. It suppresses other poets' work. Fair and in–depth comparison can be used by Pierre de Ronsard's "Of his Lady's
Old Age" and Louise Labe's "I Live, I Die" when speaking of "I do not write of Love".

Louise Labe focuses on one intense example, "Joy comes and endless boredom weighs me down." By this she means, is it even worth finding true
love at the same time feeling pain and extremes. Her poems are well explanatory because one can imagine the description of the words being used in
her poem.
Joachin du Bellay is famous for his poems that shows pain, heartache and sorrow. Additionally, they are overwhelming because they have a sense of
humbling. He mentions, "I do not write of love", which means he is not about love but at the same time he believes that he is. The poem seems to be
self–criticizing yet it is valuable. Joachin du Bellay states, "...my pleasures are all over, so I do no try to write of pleasure, but only misery." His
words may sound harmful, yet it is honest poem out of all poems. His poem is straightforward and his words are honest because he has no desire to
amaze anyone. There is a clear division in his poem, he is struggling to see the good in life. He thinks society is superficial, then he looks at himself
and wonders he may be artificial too. The impression is that he points out his own errors without thinking about his image, is very touching. His
poem is remarkable because he discusses about how people are not real as they pretend to be different. Also, he tries to be honest with himself and
show people how he really is.

Factors that Shaped the Modern Olympic Movement
DBQ Essay
Some factors that shaped the modern Olympic movement from 1892 to 2002 were the increased participation of women in the games due to women's
suffrage, the rising nationalism and superiority over competitors that took place, and the increase in trade and funding.
The modern Olympic movement was shaped through the soaring advocation of women's rights (2, 8). An anonymous photographer (#2), in the 1908
Olympic games held in Great Britain where only 2 percent of women participated in the games, presents a photograph of Sybil Newall, a female
British competitor at the games, and advocates women participating in the games. This photographer might have this view because he or she is a
feminist that took place in the women suffrage movement and is baffled that solely two percent of athletes were women, and is urging the Olympics to
make a great change. Hassiva Boulmerka (#8), an Algerian competitor that engaged in the 1992 games held in Spain where 29 percent of the athletes
were women, believes that every woman has the ability of becoming an athlete, and must strengthen their mind and conscious, not just their body, to
overcome these social challenges. Boulmerka, as a woman participant, may have this belief because she has underwent these obstacles as well, and
wishes to motivate women in Spain to have the will and determination to overcome them and become a female athlete like herself. A good additional
document that would better our understanding of how this social

The Piltdown Hoax
Introduction The infamous event of the Piltdown hoax is one that continues to draw speculative attention over a century after the initial announcement
of the paleoanthropological findings. Although many scientists, especially those involved in the field of paleoanthropology, would like to forget the
incident entirely, the Piltdown man–taxonomically referred to as Eoanthropus dawsoni–is perhaps the greatest hoax in anthropological history. By
1912, British archaeologists and paleontologists were desperate for a significant paleoanthropological finding that would provide the missing link
between humans and apes in hominin evolution (Prosser, 2009). The Piltdown man was originally a famous finding that straddled the human–animal

first concrete evidence implicating Hinton in the Piltdown hoax (Gardiner, 2003). Contained in the trunk were x teeth similarly stained to the materials
discovered at Piltdown I, while several other materials, such as elephant and hippopotami teeth and bone fragments, had been whitened similar in
fashion to the 'cricket bat' found at the Piltdown II site; the cricket bat having been made form an elephant femur. Hinton had experimented with bone
and tooth staining (De Groote et al., 2016) predominantly staining them with iron to match the gravels of a Pleistocene era (Gardiner, 2003)... Also
among Hinton's effects, were eight human teeth that had been stained with iron, chromium, and manganese (Gardiner & Currant, 1996), similar to
those of the Piltdown site. When the fluorine dating method was implemented this further incriminated Hinton as the findings from the Piltdown I site
evidenced "a recent ape jaw and canine had been artificially modified, stained and planted at Piltdown I, along with parts of a similarly stained recent
human skull" (De Groote, 2016, p. 4). The method Hinton practiced (evidenced by the findings in his trunk) was unique to him–a signature–therefore,

Comparing Dangerous Liaisons by Choderlos de Laclos and Cruel Intentions the Movie
It is my intention to compare the book, Dangerous Liaisons by Choderlos de Laclos, to its modern movie version, Cruel Intentions starring Sarah
Michelle Gellar. I intend to examine how the original French text was modified in reference to plot, character, morals/values, and themes. I also plan to
discuss how these transformations change the meaning of the story and reflect different cultural/historical contexts. There are some major differences
between these two works, if only because of when they were written. First, the plots of both works need to be discussed and explained how they are
different. The stories of both works have basically the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cecile directly gets revenge on Catherine. In Dangerous Liaisons, she does not. This also relates to cultural context. It shows how more independent
women are in the modern world. In Dangerous Liaisons, Tourvel dies of misery and Cecile goes into the convent. This shows that women were much
weaker and less independent in society in the late 1700s. The last scene in the movie shows Annette driving off in Sebastian's expensive car. This is a
typical ending to a modern story. In the book, her character dies, but in the movie, she is the vengeful, independent woman. It is apparent that the
morals and values of both works change because of their cultural and historical context. Dangerous Liaisons was basically written to teach young
women in society what not to do. This kind of literature was looked down upon at the time it was written.
"In 1824 a decree of the cour royale de Paris condemned it to be destroyed as 'dangerous'. This verdict remained the official one throughout the later
nineteenth century. The book was spoken of only to be deplored: 'a picture of the most odious immortality, that should never have been revealed even
supposing it had been true', 'a work of revolting immorality', 'a book to be admired and execrated'."(Laclos, p. 7)
It was considered to be an immoral book. The movie was made mainly for entertainment purposes. Since we basically live in an immoral society, it was
well accepted as a good movie. Although the schemes that Catherine

Europe 's gateway to trade was Venice. Venice was a producer of fine glass. The capital of textiles wasFlorence. The pandemic Black Death happened
in the fourteenth century in Italy. The plaque was carried by fleas on ships. Due to the lack of proper sanitation it spread quickly. About 1.4 million
people in England died. It was also called the bubonic plaque. The value of working class increased and workers traveled to more favorable positions.
The price of food dropped and land value decreased. The disease spread more rampant in areas of poverty because of poor sanitation, dirty drinking

Fermat's Last Theorem Research Paper
Fermat's Last Theorem Pierre de Fermat, born in 1601, hailed by many as the "king of amateurs", was a French lawyer and mathematics hobbyist. In
the margin of his copy of Diophantus' Arithmetica, he scribbled a note that would perplex and puzzle event the greatest mathematicians for the next
350 years. In this margin, Fermat wrote that there were no positive integers that can fill in x, y, and z of xn+yn=zn, where n represents a number higher
than two. This equation was based on Pythagorean triples, infinite triplets of numbers that could satisfy the equation xn+yn=zn where n represents 2.
the problem arose when Fermat noted that, "I have found a truly marvelous demonstration of this proposition which this margin is too narrow to
contain." This supposed proof was never revealed. This was not strange for Fermat, as he had a reputation of concealing his proof in order to frustrate
his colleagues, and in Arithmetica, he frequently left out his proof. The thing that made this particular equation stand out was the fact that after
Fermat's death in 1665 and the posthumous publishing of his Arithmetica, all other marginal conjectures were verified while this last... Show more

Title IX : Equality, Equality And Equality
America, as many people understand, seeks for rights, equality and chances for both men and women. America is a place where you can do almost
anything you want and be who you want to become. But before the Act of 1972, Title IX, women weren't allowed to participate in any sporting
events such as the Olympics and Wimbledon, and would have been classed as the weaker sex and as a woman who would stay at home, nurture their
children, cook for the family and clean their home. Title IX, signed on June 23rd, 1972 by President Nixon, but went into full effect on July 1st, 1972,
is a federal law that frowns upon discrimination and sexism towards women and gives them the chance to not feel different. Unfortunately, women
today still fight for what is right to them, including having a less income than men and more sexual harassment cases towards women in sport.
This law wasn't just for women, men were given opportunities for different sports that women took part in. But before 1972, just like how women
weren't allowed to compete in sporting events, boys didn't do similar things to what women did, before 1972. Cheerleading is one of them.
Cheerleading is debatable whether it is classed as a sport or not, for Title IX, but participants and supporters consider it as a sport. Title IX sees it as
an activity or hobby, whereas with gymnastics, figure skating and diving, are scored based on how well the trick was executed. Boys in school, didn't

(Social)
My third and final reason for the Olympic Games being important is, the Olympic Games have long been used as a political tool, especially as a
tool of global publicity and to give a good political image. Historically, in 393, Theodosius the Great, banned the games because there was too much
bribery and corruption going on and the games did not return until 1896. More recently, the 1936 games in berlin were choreographed by the Nazi
party as a form of propaganda showing German superiority.
Former IOC president Avery Brundage aimed to "separate sport from politics". Sadly it seems that countries will aim to use their teams as a tool,
rather than an example of what they can achieve. This inability to separate sports from politics can be traced back over almost the entire history of
the Olympic Games. However, this may be true, but there is a good side to this as well, mainly the countries involved can get lots of support from
political and none political sources.

To begin, as mentioned, most of Domingo's and Mary's powers lie within their ability to provide for Madame de la Tour's and Margaret's family,
and in Domingo's case, his ability to also save the family. This would have been in line with the cultural and social norms at the time of the novel's
conception, as slaves were a common thing at the time. As slaves, their common duty would have been to provide for their masters. In conclusion,
Paul and Virginia showcases an idyllic society in which the main characters are raised without the preconceptions of European society, or at least so it
seems on the surface. In reality, as the novel progresses, it becomes obvious that those preconceptions have made their way to Mauritius, especially in
the power dynamics of the novel. While it is presented that the main characters possess a majority of the power, it is the care of their slaves, Mary and
Domingo, that allows the family to survive on the island, thus giving them most of the

Sport 's Impact On Moral And Ethical Values Of The Modern...
Sport as important social phenomena touches every layer of the modern world society, providing significant influence on all spheres of human vital
activities. It influences almost every aspect of our lives: business life, interethnic global relations, social conditions, it also forms moods, behaviors
spreading throughout the society, has an impact on moral and ethical values of populations, radically changes the way of life. Proving this thesis I
want to include the words of famous Russian sportsman Alexander Volkov: "...sport today is the main social factor that can reflect the invasion of
bad habits and cheap cultural efficiency. Sport is the best 'rattle' which can divert people from social problems. It's some kind of 'glue' that has enough
power to unite the whole nation together, but it's impossible for neither religion, nor politics." And politicians consider sport as high potential
phenomena that can rally society with one unified national idea. However, there are not so many countries and governments that understand the
genuine value of sport's integration into the heart of the society. But to talk more specifically and in more positive way, I will take the United States
as one of the most successful countries in this entire sport understanding and its affection of life. Already in the early 1960s after the publication of
Robert H Boyle's book " Sport – mirror of the American life" in 1963 sport became a national passion and without any doubts a part of the

Olympic Games
This paper is going to evaluate the extent on how the Olympic Games have lived up to the ideas and goals of olympisim. The paper will also
evaluate key factors that have affected the Olympic Games and how it has affected the games. The paper will include on how racism have affected the
Olympic Games.
Olympisim
The idea of Olympism was set up more than 120 years ago by Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Movement. He did this because he
wanted to make the world a better place. He believed that this can be done though sport. He believed sport could help bring communities together, stop
wars and promote healthy competition free from cheating and discrimination. Ultimately Coubertin wanted to show how sport can ... Show more

Olympism tells us that sport is a universal human right and we all should be free to practice it. Olympism is a great way to show how everyone in
the world can better themselves. Pierre de Coubertin said; "Olympism is not a system it is a state of mind. It can permeate a wide variety of modes
of expression and no single race or era can claim to have the monopoly of it". (http://olympians.org/woa/olympism/ )
Olympism was formalised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC. The IOC established on 23rd June 1894 and it continues to promote
Olympism around the world. (http://olympians.org/woa/olympism/). The WOA, honours the Olympic spirit by helping the 142 NOAs around the
world run projects and events that support Olympians and that promote Olympism in the community.
Olympic ideas and goals
Goals of the Olympics is to break down barriers that could raise from, political, gender, race, or social background though sport. This allows everyone
to be able to live together happy and to make a more free world for everyone. They will do this by educating youth through sport without discrimination
of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires an mutual understanding with the spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.
Idea that they Olympics have wanted to achieve, was that men and woman are equal and are able to compete. This was finally achieved in London
2012. Where the same number of men and woman competing, first time that this has happened been mainly

Theme Of Everything That Rises Must Converge By Flannery O...

  • 1. Theme Of Everything That Rises Must Converge By Flannery O... While the effect of racism and discrimination is hotly debated, the world is not what it was yesterday. The changing society can ultimately result in battles between young and old generations causing individuals to rely on human instincts to resolve issues. In Flannery O' Connor's short story "Everything That Rises Must Converge," two characters clash in a generational conflict. On the surface, the story shows an issue of racism and discrimination, however, it shows a deeper understanding of humanity's maturity. Characters include Julian, and his nameless mother who has high "blood pressure" (O' Connor 405). Although Julian criticizes his mom's behaviour towards people of colour, he fails to realize the downfall of his own demeanor. Scholars ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Julian's mother dwells in the past and family heritage, not familiarizing to a new society and integrated South. The mother is not used to treating blacks with equality, yet she wears the same hat as the negro woman. When Julian is displeased with his mother's point of view, he aims to change her, showing a generational conflict. Julian does not reach his full potential and his relationship with his mother is of much distress. After the bus ride and confrontation with the negro woman, the mother dies, before she can accept new customs. Although Julian is filled with remorse and regret, Patricia Dinneen Maida points out that the stroke could be a drive for Julian to change. Neither Julian or his mother are wrong, nor adapting to each other's point of view. Montgomery expresses that although the relation to the title seems unknown, it is only after the tragic incident that the story's title comes into ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Pierre Bonnard Research Paper Pierre Bonnard was born on October 3rd, 1867 at Fontenay–aux–Roses, a village outside Paris. He was the son of prominent official of the French Ministry of War. Due to his insitnace Bonnard studied law at Sorbonne from 1885 to 1888. During the year of 1887 Bonnard enrolled in evening classes at AcadГ©mie Julian, which was an art school in Paris. While at the art school he and four of his friends joined together and formed group which was known as Les Nabis. They used this group to integrate art into daily life; they did this by combining nature with personal aesthetic and symbolism. They used posters, prints, book illustrations and paintings to show this. In 1981 Bonnard won his first competition which was making a poster for French champagne, also in 1891 Bonnard showed his work at an annual exhibit at the Society of Independent Artists. This is where he started to make his mark in the artist community. He didn't become an established and successful artist until 1896; this is when he had his first solo art show.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also around 1910 he left Paris to travel around the South of France. Even though he traveled to these places, there seems to of been no effect on his art. During his mature years he was described as a man with a "quiet temperament" and was always independent. Bonnard was made the honorary president of a young French artist society in 1918. In 1925 Bonnard married Maria Boursin. For many years before their marriage she was an ever–present subject in his artwork. Also during these years he began painting several self–portraits, street scenes, still life's, and landscapes. After his marriage, Maria Boursin and Bonnard moved to Southern France, which stayed their permanent resident. Shortly after buying their home in 1926, Bonnard visited the ... • 3. Pierre De Fermat Essay Pierre de Fermat Pierre de Fermat was born in the year 1601 in Beaumont–de–Lomages, France. Mr. Fermat's education began in 1631. He was home schooled. Mr. Fermat was a single man through his life. Pierre de Fermat, like many mathematicians of the early 17th century, found solutions to the four major problems that created a form of math called calculus. Before Sir Isaac Newton was even born, Fermat found a method for finding the tangent to a curve. He tried different ways in math to improve the system. This was his occupation. Mr. Fermat was a good scholar, and amused himself by restoring the work of Apollonius on plane loci. Mr. Fermat published only a few papers in hislifetime and gave no systematic exposition of his methods. He had a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fermat's proof is as follows. Let n be prime, and suppose it is equal to x2 –y2 that is, to (x+y)(x–y). Now, by hypothesis, the only basic, integral factors of n and n and unity, hence x+y=n and x–y=1. Solving these equations we get x=1 /2 (n+1) and y=1 /2(n–1). –He gave a proof of the statement made by Diophantus that the sum of the squares of two numbers cannot be the form of 4n–1. He added a corollary which I take to mean that it is impossible that the product of a square and a prime form 4n–1[even if multiplied by a number that is prime to the latter], can be either a square or the sum of two squares. For example, 44 is a multiple of 11(which is of the form 4 x 3 – 1) by 4, therefore it cannot be expressed as the sum of two squares. He also stated that a number of the form a2 +b2, where a is prime b, cannot be divided by a prime of the form 4n–1. –Every prime of the form 4n+1 is accurate as the sum of two squares. This problem was first solved by Euler, who showed that a number of the form 2(4n+1) can be always showen as the sum of two squares, of course it was Mr. Pierre de Fermat. –If a, b, c, are integers, a2 + b2= c2, then ab cannot be a square. Lagrange solved this. – The determination of a number x such that x2n+1 may be squared, where n is a given integer which is not squared. Lagrange gave a solution of this also. –There is only one integral solution of the equation x2 +4=y3. The required ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The High Renaissance was from about 1495–1527. The Late Renaissance was from about 1527–1600. Europe 's gateway to trade was Venice. Venice was a producer of fine glass. The capital of textiles wasFlorence. The pandemic Black Death happened in the fourteenth century in Italy. The plaque was carried by fleas on ships. Due to the lack of proper sanitation it spread quickly. About 1.4 million people in England died. It was also called the bubonic plaque. The value of working class increased and workers traveled to more favorable positions. The price of food dropped and land value decreased. The disease spread more rampant in areas of poverty because of poor sanitation, dirty drinking water and lice. Children were hit the hardest. Fun facts about the Renaissance. • 5. Modern Day Olympics Dbq There are quite a few factors that shaped the modern–day Olympics from 1892 to 2002. Pierre de Coubertin states that he wanted to create the Olympics to spread world peace. He does this by substituting war for friendly sports competitions (doc 1). Of course, there were some bumps in the road while trying to achieve this utopia. Some factors that have changed the Olympics are the allowing of women being able to compete in the Olympics, women's suffrage, nationalism, wars, and economic conditions (doc 2–7). Women have gone through a lot during this time frame: women's suffrage, feminism, and more. Despite these instances, women's rights have increased from 1908 to 1992. In 1908, 2% of the competitors were women (doc 2). This number of women... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Japan was undergoing a mini–depression in the economic department. This was due to the aftershock of World War 2. The Japanese mayor, Ryotaro Azuma, knew they were going through an economic depression, so he wanted the Olympics to be held in Japan. Furthermore, the Olympics were later held in Japan in 1972. Afterward, Azuma was greatly satisfied and content with the outcome. Japan was, again, part of the worldwide trade and the economy flourished. He believes that the companies, that deal with the Olympics, have saved him (doc 4). This also relates to the fees paid by the United States to air the Olympics on TV and radio broadcasts. In 1996, the Olympics were held in Atlanta and the money spent on the social media increased by about 135% from 1988 (doc 7). It can be inferred that the Olympics can revive nations; therefore, the United States agreed to pay more money since the Olympics were held in Atlanta, Georgia. The spending of money was being carried over to the 2000 Olympics, as well. Throughout this journey, many factors had an impact on the Olympics. Some of the factors that changed the modern day Olympics are women competitors, women's suffrage, nationalism, wars, and economic conditions. An increase of women's rights was given, pride for the nations was shown, wars still occurred, and economies have flourished. • 7. Essay about Leisure During the Classical Period Regarding leisure and sport during the Classical period, it is important to comment on the Olympic Games. Although this event has morphed since its inception in 776 B.C. it is still known throughout the world today. The first Olympic Games were held in the Greek city of Olympia, ninety miles west of Athens. The games were originally a religious ceremony to honor the Greek god, Zeus. Boxing, wrestling, and sprinting were just some of the events that were included in the early years of the Olympics. The games continued for over a thousand years before an empire turning towards Christianity abolished them. This new government rejected the 'pagan origins' of the games. However, the key component of this new religious movement was that God chose who would be saved with the belief that individuals were on earth to glorify and work for God. The phrase 'Protestant Ethic' was coined in 1904 by sociologist Max Weber and describes how followers emphasized hard work and diligence as a way to constantly demonstrate their salvation to God ("Max Weber"). The Greek view of a balanced approach to work and leisure was gone. As Cross (1990) explains, 'the old comforts of community leisure were but a snare in dragging the individual believer down from his isolated path of following Christ' (p. 26). Cross (1990) further illustrates that 'leisure was feared both as a lure to sin and a threat to godliness' (p.27). Although the Bible recognized the Sabbath, it was the Puritans that shaped it for generations to come. Regarding holidays, the Puritans only regarded the Sabbath as being biblical. The other holidays were 'invented by men for pleasure' (Cross, 1990, p.29). The Sabbath represented a major shift in the work week and allowed for a day of rest for its followers, even though it was to seriously worship God. The Puritans gained momentum and used their power to control leisure and recreation during the Sabbath. Even after the breakdown of the Protestant movement, the effects of regulating the Sabbath continue. In the United States, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

By General Electric deviating from SEC rules, it's as if the International Olympic Committee were not to follow the charter and to be going against their values of following good governance within their organization. Considering the above contradiction, a solution would be to get more involved in the governance of General Electrics. A way to do this would be to have the International Olympic Committees financial auditors evaluate and monitor General Electric's financial auditors and double check their work. This would ensure that any wrong–doing on General Electric's behalf be taken care of immediately and with advice from the International Olympic Committee on making the right decision that will go along with their values. Athletic Activity in the Ancient World, An Outline In ancient Greece athletic activity in the ancient world fell into 2 categories: competitive athletics in public religious festivals (victors won prizes and honored with statues and poems) or sporting events in a gymnasium. 2. The two categories were brought about by different beliefs in how the Olympics began: a. According to Philostratos, an ancient Greek author and philosopher during this time, the first contest was held during the festival at Olympia in 776 B.C. where many competitive races were held. This was a race in which the athletes ran around the circumference of the stadium. b. The Games can be seen as a religious worship of the gods and heroes. c. This idea that the Olympics were seen as worship just supports the belief that the gods in fact began the Olympic Games. In one story, five brothers fought to protect baby Zeus (King of the gods) by running in a race where the victor was crowned with an olive branch crown–thus beginning the Olympic Games. This story is closer to what happened during the ancient Greek Games but there are many other stories that exemplify the god's part in the Games. 3. The Olympic Games were seen as a status symbol–if you were not part of higher class you were not able to participate and win a. Throughout time the games have evolved from two events to two hundred. Along with the events, the athletes and vision of the games have changed as well. This paper is going to show the changes for better or worse of the games. For over a thousand years there has been people participating in the Olympics. The first documented games were in greece in the year 776 BC. The games were first called "Olympics" because the first location was close to Mount Olympus, Greece. During these first games events were limited and all competitors were males. Events were held in a coliseum and a few of the competitions were wrestling and sprinting. The games were held each year for hundreds of years until the 4th century BC. The games were stopped during that time by an Olympian ruler named Theodosius A. Christian. Modern historians believe that the ruler banned the games because they went against his edicts. An edict was the rulers proclamation when he assumed power from the previous ruler and it is believed that he literally banned the games in this order. After Christians proclamation the games were not revived until the late 1800s by a frenchman named Pierre de Coubertin. In 1904, the Games of the III Olympiad arrived in the United States, marking itself as the first Olympics to be held in said country as well as the first hosted outside of Europe. Often forgotten, this specific Olympics also signifies the beginning of the horrible luck Chicago, Illinois, has had regarding the hosting rights. With four losses under its belt and a history of bad news, Chicago is frequently told–to no one's surprise–that it should simply give up on its dream and focus on improving itself. However, who's to say that the Jewel of the Midwest can't do both? By incorporating a well–thought–out narrative of what the city has gone through into their appeal process, Chicago could very well win the bid next time around–whenever that might be. The city boasts an efficiently compact setting; a history and love of sports that entices amiable relations between residents; and an enthralling tale to tell. Overall, Chicago can use its need for a strong community to reach the top of the podium in the rigorous battle for host city status. A point often overlooked, the city technically won the hosting rights once. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the city the right to host the third Olympics in 1904. He found math very fun, delving into its deepest points and "amused himself by conjecturally restoring the work of Apollonius on plane loci." Fermat didn't publish anything in his lifetime. He simple wrote a few papers but never really documented his works completely. HIS work wasn't found written until after he died at Castres on January 12,1665 "on loose sheets of paper or written in the margins of works which he had read, annotated, and unaccompanied by any proof." This makes it hard to tell when it was written and whether or not he had taken the ideas from someone else at that time period. At the age of 30, he became a counselor for his local parliament at Toulouse. He was known as a very good and honest counselor. There, he worked on most of his mathematical studies and was mostly self taught. He wrote most of his papers there as well, even though the papers are few in numbers. His papers were the "final forms" of his works and cannot be "dated before 1660". He never dated anything himself, making it hard to pinpoint a particular date in which he had written these works. Data are the facts and figures that are collected, analyzed, and summarized for presentation and interpretation. Statistics was developed in the early 19th century as the study of populations, economies, and moral actions and later in that century as the mathematical tool for analyzing such numbers. Examples of Statistics that are used today are Mean, Median ,Mode and Range, Histograms and Stem and leaf plots. Sample survey methods are used to collect data from observational studies, and experimental design methods are used to collect data from experimental studies. The area of descriptive statistics is concerned primarily with methods of presenting and interpreting data using graphs, tables, and numerical summaries. Whenever statisticians use data from a sample., a subset of the population–to make statements about a population, they are performing statistical inference. The population is how many people i'm doing for my project which is 50 people. Estimation and hypothesis testing are procedures used to make statistical conclusions. Probability plays a key role in statistical inference, it is used to provide measures of the quality and precision of the inferences. Some of these methods are used primarily for single–variable studies, while others, such as regression and correlation analysis, are used to make inferences about relationships among two or more variables. A paradox is a statement that, despite apparently sound reasoning from true premises, leads to a self–contradictory or a logically unacceptable conclusion. Stephen Frears does "betray" the novel towards the end of the film but, it makes the ending that much more better and enticing. The film represents what the epistolary novel only hints at us readers. The novel is composed of letters where we only get a sense of the characters thoughts and emotions. The film tries to put those words into action but only showing one version of each scene. According to Stefan Szymanski, "the hosting of major sporting events has become the subject of intense competition among nations. Governments will make large financial commitments in order to win the bidding competition." The regression of big time sporting events have changed immensely, from firstly being about showing who the best athlete was, to now a way of nations being able to bring fame and possible fortunes to their doors for just hosting such huge events. 2000–2015 has been a time span where the conversation about the Olympics, it's events, and it's policies have changed. The Olympic games originated in ancient Greece, about 3,000 years ago (8th century B.C. to 4th century A.D.) (A+E Networks, 2015). Two epistolary novels that encapsulated this style very well were Dangerous Liaisons and Evelina. The similarities are also not solely in terms of writing style. Both of these authors use the letters that their characters write as a method of deception to obtain what they truly desire, even if it does not appear as such. Despite the divide that separates them in genre, both Burney and Laclos exhibited this style very well as the authors used these letters to convey their characters goals, intentions, and desires to the reader in their works. We will first examine the novel by Pierre Ambrose Laclos, Dangerous Liaisons. There are a few reasons why Laclos' letters provided a sense of importance stylistically. Dangerous Liaisons was not a typical work, as it was the first French epistolary novel to use more than one perspective (Brittanica). As we know The Expedition of Humphry Clinker by Tobias Smollett was published in 1771, had multiple perspectives displayed through letters, but Smollett was a Scot, and his work was set in both England and Scotland. His work was never able to gain much popularity in France. French literature in general did not implore this style; they usually followed a more traditionalist model when it came to the novel. His father was a country lawyer that didn 't get payed very much money. Francois didn 't receive any financial aid from his family to get an education. In result of no education, he didn 't learn how to read until he was twelve years old. However, he was able to gain some knowledge of medicine as a young adult. In 1718, at the age of only 24, he started practicing medicine in the village of Mantes. Between 1730 and 1758, he began to write several medical papers that contained very original contributions from well–known people. Francois didn 't obtain a formal medical degree until 1744. However, in 1735, his reputation was so good that he had gotten a position in Paris as a physician to the Duke of Villeroy. After that position, he decide to move to Versailles, having a new boss namedMadame de Pompadour. When he got there, he became a consulting physician to Louis XV and got to meet many popular economists at the time. After realizing moving to Versailles was an excellent decision, he decided to live there for the rest of his life. Francois had written many things on medicine for awhile, but he didn 't publish his first writing on economics until 1756, which was in his early sixties. • 25. Tis Pity She's A Whore Analysis Consummation in Epithalamion and 'Tis Pity She's a Whore In his introduction to Petrarchan Love and the Continental Renaissance, Gordon Braden claims that much of the scholarly conversation on Petrarchism centers on the "reactions of particular writers to a dominant tradition already in place...as a kind of agonistic revolt against that heavy inheritance [of the Petrarchan tradition] (Braden xii). What Braden seeks to accomplish in his scrutiny of these same writers is a reorientation of the scholarly point of view on the Petrarchan love tradition. Rather than seeing writers resisting the tradition, Braden suggests that instead there is "a sense of the tradition as opportunity, a starting point that makes new action both possible and meaningful"... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Braden sees this capacity for seduction having developed via the kiss's growing presence in Petrarchan–inspired poetry of the sixteenth century. In some texts, the kiss is one "in which souls are exchanged without the taint of physical lust, and possibly with that protection they become part of the expected commerce between lover and lady in almost all Renaissance venues" (108). But as Braden shows through Pierre de Ronsard, the kiss wished from the beloved could turn from a chaste kiss–which Ronsard's poet dismisses as "icy"–into one that has "savour in the mouth, or never kiss" at all (qtd. in Braden 108–109). This transformation from chaste/unconsummated love into more erotic poems is a subject on which Philip Sidney later complains in his Defence of Poesy, arguing that the once–virtuous love poems have become "larded with passionate Sonnets" intended to seduce ... • 26. Slaves Of Society : The Women Of Les Liaisons Dangereuses Slaves of Society: The Women of Les Liaisons dangereuses With each letter in Les Liaisons dangereuses, Choderlos de Laclos advances a great many games of chess being played simultaneously. In each, the pieces–women of the eighteenth–century Parisian aristocracy–are tossed about mercilessly but with great precision on the part of the author. One is a pawn: a convent girl pulled out of a world of simplicity and offered as an entree to a public impossible to sate; another is a queen: a calculating monument to debauchery with fissures from a struggle with true love. By examining their similarities and differences, Laclos explores women's constitutions in a world that promises ruin for even the most formidable among them. Presenting the reader glimpses of femininity from a young innocent's daunting debut to a faithful woman's conflicted quest for heavenly virtue to another's ruthless pursuit of vengeance and earthly pleasures, he insinuates the harrowing journey undertaken by every girl as she is forced to make a name for herself as a woman amongst the tumult of a community that machinates at every turn her downfall at the hands of the opposite sex. In his careful presentation of the novel's female characters, Laclos condemns this unrelenting subjugation of women by making clear that every woman's fate in such a society is a definitive and resounding checkmate. Laclos gives ammunition to his argument by steadily demonstrating the weakness instilled in women from youth. In the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To name a few, Joachim du Bellay, Pierre de Ronsard, and Louise Labe. French culture was revolutionized and influenced by these three poets. Additionally, these poets had some similarities in their poetry even though they had their own diverse form of writing. The most meaningful "I do not write of love", by Joachim du Bellay 's poem has a powerful humility in it. It suppresses other poets' work. Fair and in–depth comparison can be used by Pierre de Ronsard's "Of his Lady's Old Age" and Louise Labe's "I Live, I Die" when speaking of "I do not write of Love". Additionally, they are overwhelming because they have a sense of humbling. He mentions, "I do not write of love", which means he is not about love but at the same time he believes that he is. The poem seems to be self–criticizing yet it is valuable. Joachin du Bellay states, "...my pleasures are all over, so I do no try to write of pleasure, but only misery." His words may sound harmful, yet it is honest poem out of all poems. His poem is straightforward and his words are honest because he has no desire to amaze anyone. There is a clear division in his poem, he is struggling to see the good in life. He thinks society is superficial, then he looks at himself and wonders he may be artificial too. The impression is that he points out his own errors without thinking about his image, is very touching. • 28. Factors that Shaped the Modern Olympic Movement DBQ Essay Some factors that shaped the modern Olympic movement from 1892 to 2002 were the increased participation of women in the games due to women's suffrage, the rising nationalism and superiority over competitors that took place, and the increase in trade and funding. The modern Olympic movement was shaped through the soaring advocation of women's rights (2, 8). An anonymous photographer (#2), in the 1908 Olympic games held in Great Britain where only 2 percent of women participated in the games, presents a photograph of Sybil Newall, a female British competitor at the games, and advocates women participating in the games. This photographer might have this view because he or she is a feminist that took place in the women suffrage movement and is baffled that solely two percent of athletes were women, and is urging the Olympics to make a great change. Hassiva Boulmerka (#8), an Algerian competitor that engaged in the 1992 games held in Spain where 29 percent of the athletes were women, believes that every woman has the ability of becoming an athlete, and must strengthen their mind and conscious, not just their body, to overcome these social challenges. Boulmerka, as a woman participant, may have this belief because she has underwent these obstacles as well, and wishes to motivate women in Spain to have the will and determination to overcome them and become a female athlete like herself. The Piltdown Hoax Introduction The infamous event of the Piltdown hoax is one that continues to draw speculative attention over a century after the initial announcement of the paleoanthropological findings. Although many scientists, especially those involved in the field of paleoanthropology, would like to forget the incident entirely, the Piltdown man–taxonomically referred to as Eoanthropus dawsoni–is perhaps the greatest hoax in anthropological history. By 1912, British archaeologists and paleontologists were desperate for a significant paleoanthropological finding that would provide the missing link between humans and apes in hominin evolution (Prosser, 2009). Contained in the trunk were x teeth similarly stained to the materials discovered at Piltdown I, while several other materials, such as elephant and hippopotami teeth and bone fragments, had been whitened similar in fashion to the 'cricket bat' found at the Piltdown II site; the cricket bat having been made form an elephant femur. Also among Hinton's effects, were eight human teeth that had been stained with iron, chromium, and manganese (Gardiner & Currant, 1996), similar to those of the Piltdown site. When the fluorine dating method was implemented this further incriminated Hinton as the findings from the Piltdown I site evidenced "a recent ape jaw and canine had been artificially modified, stained and planted at Piltdown I, along with parts of a similarly stained recent human skull" (De Groote, 2016, p. 4). Comparing Dangerous Liaisons by Choderlos de Laclos and Cruel Intentions the Movie It is my intention to compare the book, Dangerous Liaisons by Choderlos de Laclos, to its modern movie version, Cruel Intentions starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. I intend to examine how the original French text was modified in reference to plot, character, morals/values, and themes. I also plan to discuss how these transformations change the meaning of the story and reflect different cultural/historical contexts. There are some major differences between these two works, if only because of when they were written. First, the plots of both works need to be discussed and explained how they are different. The stories of both works have basically the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cecile directly gets revenge on Catherine. In Dangerous Liaisons, she does not. This also relates to cultural context. It shows how more independent women are in the modern world. In Dangerous Liaisons, Tourvel dies of misery and Cecile goes into the convent. This shows that women were much weaker and less independent in society in the late 1700s. The last scene in the movie shows Annette driving off in Sebastian's expensive car. This is a typical ending to a modern story. In the book, her character dies, but in the movie, she is the vengeful, independent woman. It is apparent that the morals and values of both works change because of their cultural and historical context. Dangerous Liaisons was basically written to teach young women in society what not to do. This kind of literature was looked down upon at the time it was written. "In 1824 a decree of the cour royale de Paris condemned it to be destroyed as 'dangerous'. This verdict remained the official one throughout the later nineteenth century. The book was spoken of only to be deplored: 'a picture of the most odious immortality, that should never have been revealed even supposing it had been true', 'a work of revolting immorality', 'a book to be admired and execrated'."(Laclos, p. 7) It was considered to be an immoral book. In the margin of his copy of Diophantus' Arithmetica, he scribbled a note that would perplex and puzzle event the greatest mathematicians for the next 350 years. In this margin, Fermat wrote that there were no positive integers that can fill in x, y, and z of xn+yn=zn, where n represents a number higher than two. This equation was based on Pythagorean triples, infinite triplets of numbers that could satisfy the equation xn+yn=zn where n represents 2. the problem arose when Fermat noted that, "I have found a truly marvelous demonstration of this proposition which this margin is too narrow to contain." This supposed proof was never revealed. This was not strange for Fermat, as he had a reputation of concealing his proof in order to frustrate his colleagues, and in Arithmetica, he frequently left out his proof. The thing that made this particular equation stand out was the fact that after Fermat's death in 1665 and the posthumous publishing of his Arithmetica, all other marginal conjectures were verified while this last... America is a place where you can do almost anything you want and be who you want to become. But before the Act of 1972, Title IX, women weren't allowed to participate in any sporting events such as the Olympics and Wimbledon, and would have been classed as the weaker sex and as a woman who would stay at home, nurture their children, cook for the family and clean their home. Title IX, signed on June 23rd, 1972 by President Nixon, but went into full effect on July 1st, 1972, is a federal law that frowns upon discrimination and sexism towards women and gives them the chance to not feel different. Unfortunately, women today still fight for what is right to them, including having a less income than men and more sexual harassment cases towards women in sport. This law wasn't just for women, men were given opportunities for different sports that women took part in. But before 1972, just like how women weren't allowed to compete in sporting events, boys didn't do similar things to what women did, before 1972. Cheerleading is one of them. Cheerleading is debatable whether it is classed as a sport or not, for Title IX, but participants and supporters consider it as a sport. Historically, in 393, Theodosius the Great, banned the games because there was too much bribery and corruption going on and the games did not return until 1896. More recently, the 1936 games in berlin were choreographed by the Nazi party as a form of propaganda showing German superiority. Former IOC president Avery Brundage aimed to "separate sport from politics". Sadly it seems that countries will aim to use their teams as a tool, rather than an example of what they can achieve. Sport as important social phenomena touches every layer of the modern world society, providing significant influence on all spheres of human vital activities. It influences almost every aspect of our lives: business life, interethnic global relations, social conditions, it also forms moods, behaviors spreading throughout the society, has an impact on moral and ethical values of populations, radically changes the way of life. Proving this thesis I want to include the words of famous Russian sportsman Alexander Volkov: "...sport today is the main social factor that can reflect the invasion of bad habits and cheap cultural efficiency. Sport is the best 'rattle' which can divert people from social problems. It's some kind of 'glue' that has enough power to unite the whole nation together, but it's impossible for neither religion, nor politics." And politicians consider sport as high potential phenomena that can rally society with one unified national idea. However, there are not so many countries and governments that understand the genuine value of sport's integration into the heart of the society. But to talk more specifically and in more positive way, I will take the United States as one of the most successful countries in this entire sport understanding and its affection of life.
