2. How to Calculate Average Speed
Calculating average speed is really simple. All you do is use the formula s=d/t where s is speed, D
represents distance, and t represents time. You basically just divide the amount of distance by time, and
thats your answer.
EXAMPLE
Joe drove to Walmart. It took him 5 minutes and he drove 1 mile. What is his average speed?
So first you gather the information you need, which is distance and time. The distance is 1 mi and the time
is 5 mins . So you write S= 1mi / 5min , then you solve it so basically 1 divided by 5 is equal to 0.2 .
Since you really can divide the units you just write 0.2 mi/min, (make sure you don’t forget the units)and
so your answer is
0.2 mi/min = average speed
3. Characteristics of Speed, Velocity, and Acceleration
● Speed - is a way of measuring how fast something is
moving or being done, speed doesn’t refer to direction
unlike velocity.
● Velocity - is a rate of motion with a specific direction
● Acceleration - is the rate of change of velocity with respect
to time
