Let us make earth little softer..
1. Analysing Dev Anand : A Yogi, a true follower of Bhagwat Gita…By Rajendra Rakhecha
This is a story of 1972! I was living in a small town having 40,000 papulation then. I was 10 years old, studying in
5th std, had Annual English exam paper on Monday. I went to watch Johney mera naam on Sunday evening, just a
day ahead. That was a love about Dev Saab. He is and will remain role model for energy, passion and particularly
ability to move on even after failure after failure. He stood firmly with a head high. What an achievement! He
always remained busy in work, thoughts, newer ideas and passionate to take those to the audiences in form of
movies. It was a series of success as a result of great team work of Dev, Goldie, SD/RD, Fali Mistry,
Shailendra/Anand Bakshi/ Majrooh/ Neeraj etc. It is both interesting and painful to think, what happened to the
team later? Leader keeps the team intact. I followed him, almost all of his films & all the events later since last 45
years including Life time achievement award, Dada Saheb Falake award and many others appearances on Radio,
TV, NEWS paper, magazine, wherever he was! What a stylish entry and receiving the award! It runs like a movie
the moment you try to remember about the scene.
My elder brother used to collect photos of Dev Anand. He used to get weekly magazine “Screen”, which we used
to glance quickly hiding it from elders within family. Since spending too much time on Movies is supposed to be
bad for the students of 5
th
standard. That was my first meeting with Dev Saab.
During childhood as 10 years old, I started imitating his walking style, hair style, dressing, etc. We used to request
tailor to use collar of Joshila or Hare Rama hare Krishna, and demand a sister to pick up Rakhi of label Hare Rama
Hare Krishna..My elder brother used to get a weekly magazine Screen, we will look for new releases of Dev Anand
movie..and wait those to release..including Nawaw aur Sharab (later changed to Shawab during emergency), and
Ab meri bari, Mr.John, etc. I used to post questions related to Dev Saab in Screen and often those were published
in Q & A column. The Marathi magazine “Rasrang” published while Nav Ketan was celebrating silver jubilee. I read
and almost by heart every article published, and remember the title of photos. We friends were so innocent to
comment that he did not want to reveal the crunches around neck so he is using scarf! Elders to comment that we
knew more than his wife! We used to be around radio listening Binaca Geetmala, and counting how many songs
out of top 16 songs belongs to Dev Anand. We had radio advertisement byheart…Dharati ke upar baraf aur baraf
ke niche sona, kaun dundhega? Chhupa rustum!... We had in a town pan wala, having shop with his photo and
followed by name Anand Pan center! There was a debate comparing him with Amitabh who was a greater star.
It was a time while songs of 5 movies were included in Binaca. Those were Sharif Badmaash, Banarasi Babu,
Chhupa Rustum, Heera Panna & Joshila.
I remember I was fast asleep in the afternoon 3:30 pm on Sunday. I heard Dev Anand’s Jai Mala program on radio. I
wake up and ran to the radio. Everyone kept me watching!
2. As a child I went to sister’s home. It was a hobby – cum- habit to check the movie posture. I saw a posture of Tere
Mere Sapne! There used to be only 2 shows early days. I went on the same day for evening 6:0 pm show. I was
expecting a song “maine tere liye hi saat rang ke sapne chune”, I was that young & small kid then.
Also sister had a record player holding the records in bundle and dropping one-by-one automatically. She had HMV
record of Johney Mera Naam. We kept playing the same songs for the entire day.
As we grew, get to know more stories, made friends on Facebook who are fan following of Dev Saab. A man having
guts to loan 60 lacs and produce Guide! We waited for Ishq Ishq Ishq, a grand project by Dev Saab, taking the unit
for shooting using helicopter to the 13,000 ft height of Himalayan. He said, if you fell you would enjoy a beautiful
scene of Himalaya at 13,000 ft.
We also watched Waheedaji quoting conversion between Goldie and Dev
Dev Anand :No..No,I'll not do this, don't forget I'm Dev Anand
Goldie : Papa, aise nahi, plye aisa karana hai, pl listen to me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O26RObybQLE
We watched Dev Saab mentioning Goldie is intelligent, super intelligent than me, he did not get what he deserves

3. I kept collecting photos of Anand brothers & family using Google, Facebook and Twitter. Those are unique
collection and in thousands. Those take me to childhood too while I had seen a hard copy of those as a child.

There were many articles written by Sheerish kanekar. I remember one of the articles read during childhood. It
quotes author wants to hit the girls of new generation who were laughing at the style of Dev Anand, and wanted
to quote that their parents who had double the stomach and overweighed body had stood in queue to watch his
movies, and gathered the crowd at the theatres by bunking the college & study.
“That was Dev Anand” Nice article http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1sq0uj4
We spend time listening to radio show on youtube

Romancing with life…I read his autobiography multiple times. It remains at my bed side, and I keep reading few
pages every time. It is eazy to understand Dev Saab because of his honesty, transparency and high energy. He
thinks and talk and act, all actions are synchronized. There is no manipulation. His relationship with all co-stars was
excellent. Take any example from Raj , Dilip, Manoj Kumar, Pran, Premnath, Dharmendra, etc; Also the relationship
with business partners was smooth. Dev Saab never adamant on money matters. He was the highest paid actor
during sixties and second highest paid actor in seventies. He signed Johney mera naam on whatever capacity
Gulshan Rai had to pay at that time. He valued relationship more than money. He treated his lady co-stars with at
most dignity and respect like Madhubala, Waheeda, Nutan, Asha, Hema, Mumtaz, etc. Dev Saab was respected
among the political circle as well from Nehruji, to Indira and then Atalji and Pranav da too.
He was a great actor, not only Jewel thief, Tere mere sapne, Johney mera naam but even earlier releases Sharabi,
Manzil, Dushman, etc. His acting delivered from the heart, passionately, with so much involvement. His expertise
in acting was so huge, he just had to stand in front of camera and do the things.
Dev Saab was eazy going in communication and never had burden of the person standing opposite to him. During
NDTV show he asked Pranav Da, did he watch his movie? Pranav da thrashed & tried to answer without
confidence. “Don’t lie Paranv da” said Dev Saab. Pranav Da was president then. It was that eazy for Dev Saab!
One sure thing keeps me amazing is the relationship between three brothers. What a respect they had about each
other! Everyone is equally talented! They grew watching and taking whatever from each other. Everyone was
down to earth, and equally polite in nature, always ready to speak on phone or meet in person! That’s the sign of
great achievers.
And…One day thoughts poped up of “doing it my style, my way!”. And that proved to be a bad dream! There was
no second thought perhaps, or introspection, am I that good? Freedom of “doing it my way” won over intellect. He
wanted to direct the films. He started directing film with Prem Pujari in 1970, was pity to see waste of nice
concept, story, lyrics, songs and music. What would have Goldie felt? Goldie did say, “kya film banai”! Downfall
obviously started. Since Navketan’s foundation was so strong, it had to sustain for few years and it did. Des-Pardes
was a last successful movie released in 1978! That’s it. Too much involved in self, Self-centric personality does not
introspect. His energy levels were so high, he had no time to think and to choose the best talent and utilize. That’s
the reason post 1978 his fans saw no great movie. To the extend Charge sheet in Pune had only one show and one
person as an audience :( Was he the same person who produced Guide? Has he produced Gangster? It was a
complete mental deterioration. It was 33 years of unstoppable efforts of making films, post 1978 he kept
4. producing movies, unfortunately not close by standard of NavKetan and finally audience started making fun of
him. He did not realise.
While we observe the life of DilipKumar, he was selective about the role and stake holders of a movie like story,
screen play, director, producer, etc. At the fag end, DilipKumar poured his lifetime experience into acting and gave
us movie like Shakti. That start of career for of both was almost same years 1944 and 1946. The success story did
keep rising for both. DilipKumar gave Mugal-E-Aazam, while Dev Saab gave us Guide! Dilip Kumar also gave
Madhumati, Naya Daur, Ganga Jamuna, & Ram aur Sham like successful movies where as Kala pani, Hum Dono,
Jewel Thief and Johney Mera naam to the credit of Dev Saab. But graph for Dilip Kumar continued upward giving
the hit & sensible movies like Kranti, Shakti, Saudagar, Karma, etc; unfortunately success story started falling for
Dev saab, who offered us Ganster, Mr. Prime minister and Charge sheet!
Grand personality: We salute you Dev Saab for entertaining years, with great music, songs, acting and movies.
Critics and audiences have frequently regarded Anand as one of Bollywood's definitive Leading Men: Charismatic,
Debonaire, Urban, Handsome and Charming. Dev Saab was titled as Mr. Evergreen by film critics and analysts. He
is remembered as an energetic person, throughout the Industry.
Charismatic pleasant personality, always smiling and happy!
Extra ordinary energetic personality on the earth!
Failures did not bother him, he always moved on.
Had guts to take risk and produce movie like Guide! Even after +50 years one cannot believe that movie
like Guide can be made in India!
One of the finest actors in Bollywood, so eaze at acting! He could stand in front of camera anytime & act!
He surely made mistake to be director! Did avoid analysing the reason for failure and correcting those.
He valued relationship more than money so friendly with all. He always maintained the connect and good
relationship with many in various domains.
He was a great achiever so did not had ego. He was eazy in communication, most simple living,
entertained anyone approaching, and however liked the praise! And that’s THE Dev Anand!
He was emotional too, wept while alone, remembering the closest brothers Chetan and Goldie post their
demise! Felt bad about divorce of daughter Devina, but learnt to absorb the shocks and moved on.
True Yogi, true follower of Bhagwat Gita!
