Dev anand birthday-26 Sep Celebration
1. 1
Romancing with Life - Dev Anand
We are extremely happy while celebrating Dev Anand birthday on 26th
September
Dev Anand is deep into our life and hugely respected! We think, read, talk, listen, post, write, and share
about Dev Anand with fans and friends.
I am going to capture here few numbers, important milestones, various decisions and his personality.
1. Having born on 26th
Sep 1923, and BA graduate degree in English Literature from the Government
College, Lahore. Usha Chopra was his first love during college days. Dev Anand’s personality was
so pleasant and handsome, she wanted to kiss him in a class. This was a turning point, Dev thought
he must be good looking and fit the role as an actor in Bollywood.
2. It was July 1943, Dev Anand took frontier mail from
Lahore and came to Bombay, now Mumbai. He had
so many dreams in eyes and having just 30 Rs in
pocket.
He survived selling his stamp collection at Rs 30
after hard bargain. He became so big start and
popular that postal department has published his
stamp.
He did accept did few assignments at 85 Rs & 160
Rs per month salary during struggle period, but he
did not overshadow his dreams from his eyes.
3. Dev Anand got his first break in 1945, in movie Hum Ek hai produced by Prabhat Film Studio, which
was released in 1946. He was offered Rs 400 per month for three years contract.
4. He was paired with Suraiya in the movie Vidya in 1948, his first love in Bollywood. It was not
successful. This made Dev Anand to learnt to move on, it was a big learning. Elder brother Chetan
2. 2
pacified him saying that this would make him stronger. Life is full of up & down. He needs to learn
to face those and move on. Dev Anand really became stronger then. Dev Anand later adopted a
theme of his life, mai jindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya, har fikr ko duwe me udata chala gaya!
5. One of the most difficult, appropriate and the best decisions of Dev Anand life was forming
NavKetan in 1949. It was just 3 years he got the break; he was just 26 years old. He was a struggler
then. He might not had enough money. His first movie Afsar directed by Chetan Anand was
released in 1950. Music was by SD Burman, songs were composed by Sahir, Cinematography was
by V Ratna. Thus, team was getting formed.
6. Those were the days, promises were to keep. It was 1951, Dev offered direction of Baazi to Guru
Dutt to reciprocate his promise. After success of Baazi, Dev never looked back till 2011, wonderful
60 years of complete involvement, dedication, passion of acting and film making.
7. In 1954 NavKetan produced Taxi Driver. Its story and dialogues were written by his younger
brother Vijay Anand and Sister-in-Law Umaji. While on the set he took a short break, and secretly
registered married to his love Kalpanaji.
8. Dev Anand offered the opportunities to the talented people around. In 1957 he agreed to offer
direction to the most brilliant & an intelligent guy happened to be a younger brother Goldie for
Nau do Gyarah. Goldie was just 23 years old then. Dev Anand used to trust people and ability to
judge the brilliancy and the right evaluation based on the merit. Goldie became an integral part
of NavKetan. They both became complementary and started liking each other.
9. Then came 1965! Meanwhile NavKetan & Dev Anand was producing successful movies. House No
44, Funtoosh, Nau do gyarah, Kala paani, Kala Bazaar, Tere Ghar ke Samne, Hum Dono etc were
released and successful. Dev Anand decided to produce a movie The Guide, an ultimate, tough,
difficult and important decision of his life. During making stage people were heavily criticizing him.
His role was contradictory to his image. It was much ahead of the time. Dev Anand did not budge.
Aas a result, Bollywood got one of the top three movies. It guides you in the life. Likewise the life
of Dev Anand also guides you. I have stopped counting how many times I watched Guide! I watch
Guide, and get guided during difficult, tense, confused or jolly situation, or I need to make some
important decision. I realize a newer aspect and perspective every time. Goldie and NavKetan has
given us one of the best and an immortal film.
10. In 1971 Dev Anand took a bold decision to produce and direct a film himself, Pram Pujari. It was
a unique story having a great concept, love, fight, war and patriotism! It has excellent music by
SD & very popular songs by Neeraj. Further Dev Anand skills of direction got sharper and he
directed Heera Panna, HRHK, and Des-Pardes. Every time he made the movies with newer subject.
In all he directed total 19 movies during 40 years of 1971 to 2011.
11. Since 1945 till 2011 in 66 years, he kept acting in movies tirelessly, without stoppage. Dev Anand
did 114 movies. Out of these, 20 are super hit and 20-22 hit to successful range. List includes
Guide, Jewel Thief, Johey Mera Naam, Nau Do Gyarah, Paying Guest, Kala Paani, Hum Dono, Tere
Ghar ka Samne, Baazi, Taxi Driver, House No 44, CID, Kala Bazaar, Jaali Note, Jab pyar kisi se hota
hai, Asli Naqli, Ziddi, Jaal, Patita, Munimji, Funtoosh, Solva Saal, Love marriage, Maya, Teen
Deviyaan, Tere Mere Sapne, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Des Pardes, Amir Garib, Warrant, etc. I have
also compiled the detailed data like producer, director, heroines, supporting actors, music,
lyricists, story, dialogue, singers, box office success, rating, etc of his all movies.

12. He worked with 53 directors other than himself. He was a director’s hero, completely
surrendered. He learnt throughout like a student and sincerely followed the instructions. He did
all the roles without any hesitation. He did a role of Joker, Ice-cream seller, Sardar, Crown, Police
& Spy, Soldier or other military roles, Christ-father, Doctor, Author, Singer, Black-mailer,
Smuggler, Pick-pocketer, etc. He even sat on elephant or donkey to sing a song.
4. 4
13. Dev Anand had respectful relationship with everyone he was associated. There were around 1300
personalities of Bollywood. He was associated from Durga Khote & Kamla Kotnis to Divya Dutta &
Tara Sharma, P.L. Santoshi to Ashok Tyagi, SD Burman to Darshan Dave.
14. He worked with 88 heroines, 23 associate heroines, and 26 respected senior ladies. He had an
excellent respectful, dignified relationship with all. He did not exploit anyone. He worked with
Hemaji -9, Madhubala – 8, Waheedaji – 8, Suraiya – 7, Zeenat Aman -8, Geeta Bali- 7, Kalpana
Kartik – 6, Rakhee - 5, and Nutan – 4 movies.
5. 5
15. It was a peculiarity of Dev Anand. He earned money working in films and spent in making the
films. He produced 38 movies under NavKetan banner. Dev Anand did the excellent coordination
with all very successfully. In all he directed 19 films since 1971. After 1979 till 2011 post success
of Des Pardes which was his last successful movie, in 33 years, he produced and directed 14 films.
16. We observed by passing years, that many artists were offered the opportunities and worked
together for the long duration. Teamwork within NavKetan was amazing and long lasting. He
discovered 55 artists. He offered many to sharpen their talent and skills including directors like
Goldie, Guru Dutt, Raj Khosla, music directors like Jaidev, 7 actors like Jackie & Shatrughan Sinha,
14 heroines like Zeenat & Tina, Lyricists like Sahir & Neeraj, Shailendra, Amit Khanna, and many
singers, Cinematographer, Cameramen, art directors, etc. Also since 1950 NavKetan was
progressing in forming the team having Chetan – Dev – Vijay Anand, SD & RD Burman, Kishorda,
Lataji, Ashaji, Cinematographer Fali Mistry, Dance director Heeralal, Editor Dharamveer & Babu
Shaikh, Cameraman V Ratra, Lyrists Sahir, Neeraj, Shailendra, Art director T.K. Desai, Story writer
K.A. Narayan etc. All these brilliant contributors were associated with NavKetan for a long

duration and enjoyed working with Dev Anand. It was amazing teamwork in NavKetan under
leadership of Dev Anand. It was very appreciable and long running.
Another format
17. There are many attributes to learn from Dev Anand.
18. No regret and standing up after failure: If it Ishq Ishq, he would say, having learnt a lot, and kept
moving. Who can stand up after such a huge disaster, that too within few minutes! He started
immediately with Des Pardes. Who has guts to make movie Guide? Who has the guts to get a lady
from foreign land and make her learn Hindi for Swami Dada.
19. Communication style of DevAnand was unique, whether it was written or verbal, Hindi or English.
His communication was appreciated by his first director P.L. Santoshi. We saw that in his
autobiography. Such an honesty and spontaneity which are rarely observed. His energetic style is
reflected in each chapter. He is so fast, even while thinking and writing; you have to catch up with
his speed of thoughts while reading the book.
20. He loved and respected everyone around, from Rashid Khan, Sudhir to Ranbir; he worked with
Prithvi Raj Kapoor , associated with Raj Kapoor without any complexity, had friendship with
Shammi Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Dharmendra and Rajesh Khanna, and comfortable
with Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, and till Ranbir too, all four generations!
7. 7
He was young at heart, and get along very well with Salman
Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, and must be feeling
younger to those.
He used to spread happiness and love while meeting the
associates. There was a rightful demand in his relationship.
He will just call to Manoj Kumar and say he is taking title
Hare Rama Hare Krishna, finish. No more discussion. He
met Ranjit as well as Vinod Khanna with the same zeal,
same affection, celebrated birthday of Rupesh Kumar with
the same intense happiness. He never lived with prejudice.
He did not discriminate between artists, their levels,
gender, cast, religion, region, etc.
21. He was like Karna of Mahabharat, no one returned empty handed from his door. Everyone got an
opportunity. Everyone got treated with respect and dignity. We never observed exploitation of
any female costars. He was supportive to newcomers and offering to improve their performances
without shouting and go for many retakes. He would advise to his colleagues not to shout on
youngsters and encourage those to learn at eaze. He would demonstrate confidence in those. His
relationships used to be excellent without any ego, with newcomers, media & journalists,
politicians, etc; may be new comer Darshan Dave, Fatima Shaikh, Anita Ayub, or journalists
Sheerish Kanekar, Prabhu Chawala, etc. He is only a person having great repo with Panditji to
Indiraji and Atalji, Pranav Da, Bala Saheb Thackrey, etc. He used to be as eazy talking from
newcomer to prime minister of India.
22. NavKetan and Dev Anand is an institute of Bollywood. Lucky are those worked closely with Dev
Anand. Lucky are the fans those studied Dev Anand closely and loved, lucky are the audiences
who are superbly entertained by Dev Anand. Dev Anand never left us. He is a god, Dev for us,
always around. Long live Dev Anand. You will always be in the hearts of millions. We love you Dev
Anand. Salute to your kindness and greatness. Happiest birthday!
