1. A LEGACY OF HOPE, MG (Ret.) and Mrs. Graham share their experience with tragedy Come out and learn about
   resilience from a firsthand perspective. MG (Ret.) Mark Graham and Mrs. Carol Graham discuss how they have
   coped with and continue to work through the tragic loss of two sons - one college-aged son to suicide and another
   to combat in Iraq only seven months later. Their discussion will highlight many of the resources that are available to
   assist with building resiliency. This exceptional opportunity will provide the JBLM community with additional tools
   to understand, prevent, and deal with tragedy in their lives. Help spread the Graham’s message of hope across the
   JBLM community. The event is open to the entire JBLM community to include all I Corps and tenant unit military,
   civilians, significant others of service members, and extended families. Note this event is not appropriate for
   children or teens. If you, your service member, or someone you love is battling with depression or if you are simply
   interested in the topic, the Grahams will share their experiences three times at Carey Theater, JBLM Main, March

                                                                    5.      JBLM TAX CENTERS The center had a record
                                                                    breaking year in 2012 but wants to do more, Tax
                                                                    Center OIC CPT Keaton Troy said, offering the first-
                                                                    ever JBLM drop-off program for service members in
                                                                    grades E1 through E4. For information, contact CPT

      The Tax Center will be open full time through April 16th, 2013. Hours for the Tax Center are 0800 - 2000, Monday
     through Friday and 0900-1700, on Saturdays. The Tax Center is located in BLDG T-6069, across from Iron Mike
     statute, across street from Main Exchange. We also are located in BLDG 100 on McChord Field RM 3005, phone
     number is 253-967-1040.
The JBLM Tax Center is offering a new E1-E4 Priority Drop Off Program. Do you want to save money? Do you want
    to save time? Do you want quality review over your tax return? The E-1 to E-4 drop off program allows
    servicemembers on JBLM to have tax returns prepared while still at work. Documents needed for drop off program:
    * W-2 (Up to three only)
    * 1099 INT or 1099
    * No rental property
    * Filing status - Single or Married Filing Jointly
    * Copy of All Social Security Cards on tax return (including children)
    * Copy of Military ID

7. PIERCE COUNTY ALERT This free service allows
   you to sign up to get alerts on your cell phone,
   work phone, text message, e-mail, home
   phone, and more. You can also choose the
   locations you want to be contacted about. You
   can receive alerts about emergencies that may affect your residence, workplace, child’s school, or other areas as

8. THE ARMY EMERGENCY RELIEF SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM is a need based scholarship program established to assist
   children and spouses of Soldiers in obtaining a 4-year undergraduate degree. Applicants must apply each year and
   may receive assistance for up to four academic years. We are now accepting applications for academic year 2013-

9. THE FORT LEWIS FAMILY MEMBER SCHOLARSHIP Fund is accepting 2013 scholarship applications to April 10.
   Applications can be downloaded from www.fortlewisscholarship.com. Applicants are encouraged to use the fill-in
   form. Family members of active duty service members, retirees and surviving family members are eligible to receive
   scholarships without regard to family income or rank of the service member. The applicant remains anonymous until
   the process is complete. The Fort Lewis Family Member Scholarship Fund typically awards more than $29,000 per
   year, which comes from charitable donations from many sources. Applications are judged on multiple criteria
   including but essay response, grades, community involvement and leadership. For information go to

10. INTERNATIONAL SPOUSE ORIENTATION International spouses who are new to Joint Base Lewis-McChord are invited

11. Family & MWR Directorate is looking for a licensed massage therapist to work at Jensen Family Health and Fitness
    Center at JBLM. The work will be provided through a concession contract, with all supplies & equipment provided by

16. The American Red Cross has a new FREE FIRST AID APP. This app
    has received high ratings. Very good tool for everyday first aid
    knowledge and also for first aid in case of an emergency. You
    can download the app from either the iTunes Store or Google
    Play, search: Red Cross. This and other Red Cross emergency
    preparedness apps are available.

17. FLEA MARKET VENDORS WANTED Clean out your attic and
    closets and sell your household treasures at the Spring Flea
    Market March 23 from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. in the MWR Fest Tent
    (next to Bowl Arena Lanes on Liggett Ave. at Lewis Main). You
    can rent a 12-foot space for $24 or an 18-foot space for $34. If

19. FREE SAT AND ACT PREP PROGRAMS: The SAT and ACT DVD includes more than 11 hours of video instruction and
    3000 files of supplemental test prep material, sample questions, and practice tests. Students select the training
    they need and study at their own pace. Who is eligible to receive the donated software? Eligible recipients include
    Service Members from all branches of the Military who are active duty, retired, Veterans, Guard, Reserve, DoD
    employees and civilians performing military support. Also eligible are relatives and dependents of anyone who

20. THE WARRIOR CHECK-UP is a unique opportunity for Soldiers with questions or concerns about their alcohol or
    substance use to take stock of their situation and think through their options with a counselor who is outside the
    military system. Command has no access to names or information of participants. A study funded by the
    Department of Defense, callers may also complete a series of questionnaires and earn up to $175. This service is no-
    pressure, nonjudgmental and entirely telephone-based. Call 888 685-3889 to find out more!"

21. MILITARY SPOUSES ACTIVITIES, Lakewood Family YMCA. Refuel emotionally, physically, and spiritually while getting
    connected to other military Spouses through fun activities and self-reflection. Every first and third Tuesday of the

23. LEWIS ARTS & CRAFTS CENTER RELOCATED All Arts & Crafts services are now located at McChord Field. Come and

26. THE EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP) is available at both
    Fort Lewis and McChord Field. The EAP is a free, confidential
    information, referral and consultation service available to the
    following individuals: DOD Civilian Employees, Retired military
    personnel, and FAMILY MEMBERS OF ACTIVE DUTY SERVICE
    MEMBERS, Retirees and DOD Civilians. To schedule an appointment,

32. ARMY OFFERS NEW APP- Members of the Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) community can now download
    frequently requested info about installation activities and events to Apple or Android mobile device, using the "My
    Military Communities" (myMC2) smartphone app. Smartphone users can download myMC2 by searching for "My
    Military Communities" in Google Play or iTunes. Once installed, users can select "Joint Base Lewis-McChord" (or one
    of more than 30 other participating installations) to view a customer service directory and an event calendar for
    their base, using the app. For more information about the MWR app, visit the Joint Base Lewis-McChord MWR

33. COLLEGE GRANTS FOR AF STUDENTS If you’re an Air Force family with a family member in college or starting college
    in the fall of 2013, you may be eligible for a $2,000 grant. The AFAS General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant
    Program helped 3,000 college students last year and expects to make the same number of awards in 2013. Don’t
    hesitate because you think you make too much money. The program has a better that 50 percent selection rate!

RUMOR HAS IT…SEQUESTRATION AND MILITARY FAMILIES- http://www.militaryfamily.org/feature-

   Rumor: Military Pay and Allowances will be cut. FALSE

   Fact: Military pay and allowances are protected. Paychecks will be paid on time and basic allowance for housing and
   other pays will continue. Retirees and survivors will also continue to receive their payments and annuities.

   Rumor: Troops deployed to Afghanistan will come home early because of sequestration. False.

   Fact: Department of Defense (DoD) is protecting funding for operations in Afghanistan. The bad news is that no one
   knows where the funding is coming from and cuts to training accounts could delay the preparation of replacements
   for service members currently deployed.

   Rumor: Sequestration will cause a government shutdown. False.

   Fact: While DoD will immediately have more than $40 billion less to fund its operations after March 1, the effects of
   the cuts will occur over the next several months. Information from the Services suggests that the effects will be
   more severe after April and especially this summer. Child care centers will operate and schools and commissaries
   will remain open, but services will diminish and many programs and agencies will cut their hours. The greatest
   effects will be seen in military readiness, as it declines over the next year, but this is not a shutdown. Check back for
   updates later in March regarding a possible government shutdown due to the end of the funding in the Continuing
   Resolution.

   Rumor: Contract workers will lose their jobs. Unknown.

   Fact: There is no one answer for the impact on contract workers. Present contracts should be honored. Future
   contracts may be cancelled, modified or postponed. For a specific answer, check with your contracting agency.

   Rumor: Wounded warrior programs are in jeopardy. False—maybe.

   Fact: DoD says wounded warrior programs are protected. But, support for wounded warriors and their families is
   provided through several different programs, including military health care, the Army Wounded Warrior Program,
   Marine for Life, and Navy Safe Harbor. Many of these programs are staffed by civilians who might be furloughed.
   More details are needed before we can determine just how total support for wounded warriors and their families
   will be affected.

   Rumor: Only non-essential DOD civilians could be furloughed for up to 22 days. False.

   Fact: Most of the 800,000 DOD civilians around the world could be furloughed for up to 22 days beginning April 25.
   The once-a-week furlough day would result in a 20 percent cut in their pay. All parts of the country and military
   communities overseas will be affected. Eighty percent of these workers work outside of the National Capital region.
   This furlough will affect all civilians equally, but DoD has identified only limited exceptions to the furloughs, including
   civilians in war zones, foreign workers overseas, and political appointees.
Rumor: Family health care will probably be affected with longer wait times and less access. True.

Fact: The military health system is NOT exempt and will be cut by $3 billion. DoD civilians, who will be subject to
furlough, make up 40 percent of the total workforce in military hospitals and clinics. This could result in reductions in
clinic hours and care. Referrals for “elective” care might be delayed or frozen. If sequestration drags on, DoD may
delay payment to civilian doctors who see TRICARE patients.

Rumor: TRICARE for Life is protected from sequestration. True—But.

Fact: Funding for TRICARE for Life and Medicare is protected, except that Medicare payments to doctors will be cut
by 2 percent under sequestration. So, Medicare-eligible TRICARE beneficiaries can continue to visit their civilian
doctors and have their medical claims paid. TRICARE for Life beneficiaries who receive care in military hospitals and
clinics may find it more difficult to get an appointment because of civilian furloughs. They may also find that the
military pharmacy is trying to save money by no longer stocking some medications or filling prescriptions for a
smaller number of days than usual. Pharmacy civilian staff will also be furloughed and so wait times at the
pharmacies may climb. We encourage beneficiaries to check out TRICARE Pharmacy Home Delivery.

Rumor: Community support services will cease to exist. False.

Fact: Offices that service military families – Army Community Service, Fleet and Family Support Centers, Airman and
Family Service Centers, Marine Corps Community Services – could have to adjust hours and services due to the
civilian furloughs. They are also subject to hiring freezes. Smaller staffs will result in longer waits for families needing
services such as counseling, financial advice, new parent support programs, survivor outreach, and victim
advocates.

Rumor: Only military children in DoD schools will be affected by sequestration. False.

Fact: While Department of Defense schools are NOT exempt from civilian furloughs, DoD insists they will work to
provide school children with a full year of quality education and ensure each school maintains its accreditation. It’s
important to remember that military families will also be hurt by cuts to civilian programs. Federal education
programs face cuts of $106 million in Impact Aid money that supports civilian schools educating military kids; $1
billion in special education programs; $140 million in student financial aid; and $1.3 billion in Title I funding that
helps many schools attended by military children.

Rumor: Many Child Development Centers will experience reduced hours and available slots. True.

Fact: The impact on Child Development Centers (CDC) and Child and Youth Services is unclear. Some centers are
staffed by Non-appropriated fund (NAF) workers who will not be affected by furloughs. Others are staffed by civilian
government employees and some by a mixture of both types. Centers staffed by DoD civilians will be affected by
furloughs. Decisions on cutbacks on hours or services will be made locally.

Rumor: Commissaries will go away. False.

Fact: Commissaries and its headquarters will be closed on Wednesdays, in addition to any days the commissaries are
currently closed.

Rumor: Base exchanges will have to cut hours. False.

Fact: Military exchanges (AAFES, NEXCom, Marine Corps Exchange) do not receive appropriated funding (other than
some support for shipping goods overseas) and so will not have to adjust hours because of sequestration.
Rumor: PCS orders will be affected. Unknown.

    Fact: What will happen to Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves is unclear. Funds for dislocation allowances
    tied to PCS moves will be available, but transportation offices will be short-staffed because of civilian furloughs.
    When we asked if funds to cover the transportation of household goods and families would be affected by
    sequestration, we were told each Service will decide soon on the extent of PCS moves this summer.

35. ST. PATTY’S DAY 5K/10K and IRISH CRAIC Enter the 2013 St. Patty’s Day 5K/10K Run March 16 and stick around for

    military children can escape the stress of everyday life and enjoy just being a kid, surrounded by others who

    climb towers, plummet down water slides, and more in a “purple” environment that includes kids of all ranks and
    services, including the reserve and guard components. This, as the military terms it, “purple” environment is

    schedule that is designed to support military kids dealing with the stresses of deployment. All military kids

64. COUNSELING FOR YOUTH THROUGH MILITARY ONESOURCE:
 If the child is younger than 13, he or she may participate in family counseling only. There is no individual counseling for
    children younger than age 13.
 If the child is between 13 and 18, they can have individual counseling but the parent must participate in the first
    session. Telephonic counseling is not available to this age group.
 If the child is over 18, they can request and attend counseling on their own provided they meet other eligibility criteria.
    For all callers in crisis, regardless of age, MOS will assess for risk and provide assistance as appropriate. A suicidal caller
    would not be turned away because of their age. MOS would work with the caller to ensure their immediate safety and
    to connect them with appropriate support services. Please note, MOS should not be promoted as a suicide hotline. A

 Military Saves week is Feb. 25- March 2. Visit www.MilitarySaves.org for savings tips,

How can those who currently aren’t saving afford to save money? And how can those
saving only a little save more? Here are Military Saves’ top 10 tips for saving money
when budgets are tight.


Cut Spending Painlessly


Tip 1: To find small savings that add up to big savings over time, keep a careful record
of all (and we mean all) of your expenditures for a month. You may be surprised to
learn how much you are spending on such things as a daily latte or restaurant meals.
Tip 2: For necessary purchases — such as food and transportation and insurance—
comparison shop. Remember your Commissary and Exchange can offer you savings year-round. Utilize these
savings opportunities as you would your other military benefits.
Tip 3: Restrain spending for birthdays and holidays, especially Christmas. A few well chosen gifts are likely to be
more appreciated than a more costly pile of gifts chosen thoughtlessly in a shopping mall foray.

Reduce High-Cost Debt


Tip 4: Interest rates on credit card debts and other retail credit lines can easily run 25 percent. You can save
hundreds, perhaps thousands, of dollars a year by paying off these high-cost debts. If you are located at a military
installation you can get assistance at the Family Readiness Center for free. Personal Financial Managers and
Counselors are there to help and can be a great asset in getting a debt repayment plan in order. Another resource is
MilitaryOneSource (1-800-342-9647) they also offer free financial counseling.


In most communities, there are agencies that can help you manage your debts. The most helpful and most widely
available are non-profit Consumer Credit Counseling Services (CCCS). CCCS counselors can work with you privately to
help you develop a budget, figure out your options, and negotiate with creditors to repay your debts. Call 1-800-
388-2227 to locate the office nearest you.
Tip 5: Build an emergency fund to avoid having to take loans to pay for unexpected purchases. That fund is usually
best kept in a savings account, despite the low interest rates such accounts pay right now. But do try to keep a high
enough balance in the account to avoid monthly fees many on-base banks and credit unions participate in Military
    Saves Week and offer great savings options during the Week and throughout the year. To learn more on emergency
    savings, click here.
    Tip 6: Set up an automatic transfer each pay period or month from your checking to your savings account or through
    an allotment. Even as little as $10 or$15 a month helps. After all, that’s $120 or $180 a year.
    Tip 7: Put all your loose change in this savings account. For many people, that could add up to well over $100 a year.

    Take Free Money and Save it


    Tip 8: Low- and moderate-income workers qualify, each year, for an Earned Income Tax Credit that can put over
    $1,000, and often more than $2,000, in your pocket. IRS Publication 596 explains how to apply, or you can contact
    your local tax payer assistance center for in-person help. Then be sure to save at least half of this windfall.
    Tip 9: Participate in a local Investment Development Account (IDA) program. In return for attending financial
    education sessions and agreeing to save for a home, education, or business, you typically receive $2 for every $1 you
    save through an IDA program. So, $25 that you save each month ends up as $900 at the end of a year.
    Tip 10: Participate in the Thrift Savings Plan or Save at Work. While we encourage letting this money build up until
    retirement, it can be withdrawn, or borrowed on, to cope with serious emergencies.

112. SFAC EXPANDS ITS MISSION The Soldier and Family Assistance Center moved into a new building and took on a
   new mission during a Jan. 7 ribbon-cutting ceremony at the newly-constructed facility at Madigan Army Medical
   Center. The SFAC will now provide job search assistance, education counseling, financial readiness, and information,
   referral and social services to all wounded, ill or injured service members undergoing a Integrated Disability
   Evaluation System review - not just those assigned to the Warrior Transition Battalion.

       Point 8. Demolitions training with C4 will be conducted all day March 12 through 11:59 p.m. at Range 74. For

FALSE Fact: Military pay and allowances are protected. Paychecks will be paid on time and basic allowance for housing and other pays will continue. Retirees and survivors will also continue to receive their payments and annuities. Rumor: Troops deployed to Afghanistan will come home early because of sequestration. False. Fact: Department of Defense (DoD) is protecting funding for operations in Afghanistan. The bad news is that no one knows where the funding is coming from and cuts to training accounts could delay the preparation of replacements for service members currently deployed. Rumor: Sequestration will cause a government shutdown. False. Fact: While DoD will immediately have more than $40 billion less to fund its operations after March 1, the effects of the cuts will occur over the next several months. Information from the Services suggests that the effects will be more severe after April and especially this summer. Child care centers will operate and schools and commissaries will remain open, but services will diminish and many programs and agencies will cut their hours. The greatest effects will be seen in military readiness, as it declines over the next year, but this is not a shutdown. Check back for updates later in March regarding a possible government shutdown due to the end of the funding in the Continuing Resolution. Rumor: Contract workers will lose their jobs. Unknown. Fact: There is no one answer for the impact on contract workers. Present contracts should be honored. Future contracts may be cancelled, modified or postponed. For a specific answer, check with your contracting agency. Rumor: Wounded warrior programs are in jeopardy. False—maybe. Fact: DoD says wounded warrior programs are protected. But, support for wounded warriors and their families is provided through several different programs, including military health care, the Army Wounded Warrior Program, Marine for Life, and Navy Safe Harbor. Many of these programs are staffed by civilians who might be furloughed. More details are needed before we can determine just how total support for wounded warriors and their families will be affected. Rumor: Only non-essential DOD civilians could be furloughed for up to 22 days. False. Fact: Most of the 800,000 DOD civilians around the world could be furloughed for up to 22 days beginning April 25. The once-a-week furlough day would result in a 20 percent cut in their pay. All parts of the country and military communities overseas will be affected. Eighty percent of these workers work outside of the National Capital region. This furlough will affect all civilians equally, but DoD has identified only limited exceptions to the furloughs, including civilians in war zones, foreign workers overseas, and political appointees.
  • 7. Rumor: Family health care will probably be affected with longer wait times and less access. True. Fact: The military health system is NOT exempt and will be cut by $3 billion. DoD civilians, who will be subject to furlough, make up 40 percent of the total workforce in military hospitals and clinics. This could result in reductions in clinic hours and care. Referrals for “elective” care might be delayed or frozen. If sequestration drags on, DoD may delay payment to civilian doctors who see TRICARE patients. Rumor: TRICARE for Life is protected from sequestration. True—But. Fact: Funding for TRICARE for Life and Medicare is protected, except that Medicare payments to doctors will be cut by 2 percent under sequestration. So, Medicare-eligible TRICARE beneficiaries can continue to visit their civilian doctors and have their medical claims paid. TRICARE for Life beneficiaries who receive care in military hospitals and clinics may find it more difficult to get an appointment because of civilian furloughs. They may also find that the military pharmacy is trying to save money by no longer stocking some medications or filling prescriptions for a smaller number of days than usual. Pharmacy civilian staff will also be furloughed and so wait times at the pharmacies may climb. We encourage beneficiaries to check out TRICARE Pharmacy Home Delivery. Rumor: Community support services will cease to exist. False. Fact: Offices that service military families – Army Community Service, Fleet and Family Support Centers, Airman and Family Service Centers, Marine Corps Community Services – could have to adjust hours and services due to the civilian furloughs. They are also subject to hiring freezes. Smaller staffs will result in longer waits for families needing services such as counseling, financial advice, new parent support programs, survivor outreach, and victim advocates. Rumor: Only military children in DoD schools will be affected by sequestration. False. Fact: While Department of Defense schools are NOT exempt from civilian furloughs, DoD insists they will work to provide school children with a full year of quality education and ensure each school maintains its accreditation. It’s important to remember that military families will also be hurt by cuts to civilian programs. Federal education programs face cuts of $106 million in Impact Aid money that supports civilian schools educating military kids; $1 billion in special education programs; $140 million in student financial aid; and $1.3 billion in Title I funding that helps many schools attended by military children. Rumor: Many Child Development Centers will experience reduced hours and available slots. True. Fact: The impact on Child Development Centers (CDC) and Child and Youth Services is unclear. Some centers are staffed by Non-appropriated fund (NAF) workers who will not be affected by furloughs. Others are staffed by civilian government employees and some by a mixture of both types. Centers staffed by DoD civilians will be affected by furloughs. Decisions on cutbacks on hours or services will be made locally. Rumor: Commissaries will go away. False. Fact: Commissaries and its headquarters will be closed on Wednesdays, in addition to any days the commissaries are currently closed. Rumor: Base exchanges will have to cut hours. False. Fact: Military exchanges (AAFES, NEXCom, Marine Corps Exchange) do not receive appropriated funding (other than some support for shipping goods overseas) and so will not have to adjust hours because of sequestration.
  • 8. Rumor: PCS orders will be affected. Unknown. Fact: What will happen to Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves is unclear. Funds for dislocation allowances tied to PCS moves will be available, but transportation offices will be short-staffed because of civilian furloughs. When we asked if funds to cover the transportation of household goods and families would be affected by sequestration, we were told each Service will decide soon on the extent of PCS moves this summer. COUNSELING FOR YOUTH THROUGH MILITARY ONESOURCE:  If the child is younger than 13, he or she may participate in family counseling only. There is no individual counseling for children younger than age 13.  If the child is between 13 and 18, they can have individual counseling but the parent must participate in the first session. Telephonic counseling is not available to this age group.  If the child is over 18, they can request and attend counseling on their own provided they meet other eligibility criteria. For all callers in crisis, regardless of age, MOS will assess for risk and provide assistance as appropriate. A suicidal caller would not be turned away because of their age. And how can those saving only a little save more? Here are Military Saves’ top 10 tips for saving money when budgets are tight. Cut Spending Painlessly Tip 1: To find small savings that add up to big savings over time, keep a careful record of all (and we mean all) of your expenditures for a month. You may be surprised to learn how much you are spending on such things as a daily latte or restaurant meals. Tip 2: For necessary purchases — such as food and transportation and insurance— comparison shop. Remember your Commissary and Exchange can offer you savings year-round. Utilize these savings opportunities as you would your other military benefits. Tip 3: Restrain spending for birthdays and holidays, especially Christmas. A few well chosen gifts are likely to be more appreciated than a more costly pile of gifts chosen thoughtlessly in a shopping mall foray. Reduce High-Cost Debt Tip 4: Interest rates on credit card debts and other retail credit lines can easily run 25 percent. You can save hundreds, perhaps thousands, of dollars a year by paying off these high-cost debts. If you are located at a military installation you can get assistance at the Family Readiness Center for free. Personal Financial Managers and Counselors are there to help and can be a great asset in getting a debt repayment plan in order. Another resource is MilitaryOneSource (1-800-342-9647) they also offer free financial counseling. In most communities, there are agencies that can help you manage your debts. The most helpful and most widely available are non-profit Consumer Credit Counseling Services (CCCS). CCCS counselors can work with you privately to help you develop a budget, figure out your options, and negotiate with creditors to repay your debts. Call 1-800- 388-2227 to locate the office nearest you. Tip 5: Build an emergency fund to avoid having to take loans to pay for unexpected purchases. That fund is usually best kept in a savings account, despite the low interest rates such accounts pay right now. But do try to keep a high
  • 21. enough balance in the account to avoid monthly fees many on-base banks and credit unions participate in Military Saves Week and offer great savings options during the Week and throughout the year. To learn more on emergency savings, click here. Tip 6: Set up an automatic transfer each pay period or month from your checking to your savings account or through an allotment. Even as little as $10 or$15 a month helps. After all, that’s $120 or $180 a year. Tip 7: Put all your loose change in this savings account. For many people, that could add up to well over $100 a year. Take Free Money and Save it Tip 8: Low- and moderate-income workers qualify, each year, for an Earned Income Tax Credit that can put over $1,000, and often more than $2,000, in your pocket. IRS Publication 596 explains how to apply, or you can contact your local tax payer assistance center for in-person help. Then be sure to save at least half of this windfall. Tip 9: Participate in a local Investment Development Account (IDA) program. In return for attending financial education sessions and agreeing to save for a home, education, or business, you typically receive $2 for every $1 you save through an IDA program. So, $25 that you save each month ends up as $900 at the end of a year. Tip 10: Participate in the Thrift Savings Plan or Save at Work.
