MOUTH
ā€¢ Teeth mechanically
break down food into
small pieces. Tongue
mixes food with saliva
(contains amylase,
which helps break
down starch).
ā€¢ Epiglottis is a flap-like
structure at the back of
the throat that closes
over the trachea
preventing food from
entering it. It is located
in the Pharynx.

controls passage of food from esophagus into
the stomach
ā€¢ Relaxes = food enters stomach
ā€¢ Contracts = stomach contents prevented from
reentering the esophagus

THE GALLBLADDER
The gallbladder concentrates and stores bile.
Bile:
ā€¢ Secreted by the liver
ā€¢ Contains cholesterol, bile pigments and
phospholipids
ā€¢ Flows from the liver, through the hepatic ducts,
into the gallbladder
ā€¢ Exits the gallbladder via the cystic duct
ā€¢ Flows from the cystic duct into the common
bile duct, into the small intestine
ā€¢ In the small intestine, aids digestion
by breaking down fatty foods and
fat-soluble vitamins
BY ROMMEL LUIS C. ISRAEL III
41

43
PANCREATIC DUCT
ā€¢ Main duct (Wirsung) runs the entire length of
pancreas
ā€¢ Joins CBD at the ampulla of Vater
ā€¢ 2 ā€“ 4 mm in diameter, 20 secondary branches
ā€¢ Ductal pressure is 15 ā€“ 30 mm Hg (vs. 7 ā€“ 17 in
CBD) thus preventing damage to panc. duct
ā€¢ Lesser duct (Santorini) drains superior portion of
head and empties separately into 2nd portion of
duodenum

ā€“)
ā€¢ Enzymes
ā€¢ Amylase, lipases, nucleases are secreted in
active form but require ions or bile for
optimal activity
ā€¢ Proteases secreted in inactive form
BY ROMMEL LUIS C. ISRAEL III

ā€¢ Trypsinogen is activated to trypsin by
brush border enzyme enteropeptidase
ā€¢ Procarboxypeptidase and
chymotrypsinogen are activated by
trypsin
BY ROMMEL LUIS C. ISRAEL III
50
REGULATION OF BILE SECRETION
ā€¢Bile secretion is stimulated by
ā€¢ Bile salts in enterohepatic
circulation
ā€¢ Secretin from intestinal cells
exposed to HCl and fatty chyme
BY ROMMEL LUIS C. ISRAEL III
51
REGULATION OF BILE SECRETION
ā€¢ Gallbladder contraction is stimulated by
ā€¢ Cholecystokinin (CCK) from intestinal
cells exposed to proteins and fat in
chyme
ā€¢ Vagal stimulation (minor stimulus)
ā€¢ Cholecystokinin also causes the
hepatopancreatic sphincter to relax

  • 47. PANCREAS ā€¢ Endocrine function ā€¢ Pancreatic islets secrete insulin and glucagon ā€¢ Exocrine function ā€¢ Acini (clusters of secretory cells) secrete pancreatic juice ā€¢ Zymogen granules of secretory cells contain digestive enzymes BY ROMMEL LUIS C. ISRAEL III 47
  • 49. PANCREATIC JUICE ā€¢ Watery alkaline solution (pH 8) neutralizes chyme ā€¢ Electrolytes (primarily HCO3 ā€“) ā€¢ Enzymes ā€¢ Amylase, lipases, nucleases are secreted in active form but require ions or bile for optimal activity ā€¢ Proteases secreted in inactive form BY ROMMEL LUIS C. ISRAEL III 49
  • 50. PANCREATIC JUICE ā€¢ Protease activation in duodenum ā€¢ Trypsinogen is activated to trypsin by brush border enzyme enteropeptidase ā€¢ Procarboxypeptidase and chymotrypsinogen are activated by trypsin BY ROMMEL LUIS C. ISRAEL III 50
  • 51. REGULATION OF BILE SECRETION ā€¢Bile secretion is stimulated by ā€¢ Bile salts in enterohepatic circulation ā€¢ Secretin from intestinal cells exposed to HCl and fatty chyme BY ROMMEL LUIS C. ISRAEL III 51
  • 52. REGULATION OF BILE SECRETION ā€¢ Gallbladder contraction is stimulated by ā€¢ Cholecystokinin (CCK) from intestinal cells exposed to proteins and fat in chyme ā€¢ Vagal stimulation (minor stimulus) ā€¢ Cholecystokinin also causes the hepatopancreatic sphincter to relax BY ROMMEL LUIS C. ISRAEL III 52
